The MACURH 2014 Conference Staff and the University of Kansas can’t wait to welcome you to Lawrence, where we will piece together the bigger picture!

Hey MACURH! We hope as you are getting delegations formed and meetings are being held, you are starting to think about spirit and philanthropy at MACURH 2014 at KU! We cannot wait to welcome you atop Mt. Oread, join in together to Ride the Pony, and enjoy introducing ourselves to one another through Roll Call! In this newsletter, you will find information regarding spirit and philanthropy at the conference, including something new to MACURH this year, Silent Cheer Zones! Just a reminder that registration and program submissions are currently open and forms for both are located online at tinyurl.com/MACURH2014atKU.

Spirit Information One of the best parts of attending a MACURH conference is the spirit the MACURH region brings. And MACURH 2014 at KU will be no different! The information below will layout the requirements behind spirit at the conference.

Roll Call The roll call for MACURH 2014 will show off the uniqueness and individuality of each school. By showcasing one or all of the four pillars of the conference theme— teamwork, diversity, tradition, and passion—delegations will show the conference how these pillars play a role in their own school. For example, the University of Kansas might show off one of our great traditions of the Rock Chalk chant, or we might show Mt. Oread on which our campus was founded. Each delegation will either submit a video or perform a chant, neither lasting more than one minute. Puzzle Points will be awarded based on creativity and the audience’s favorite. 5 puzzle points will be given for submitting a roll call, and then an extra 50 puzzle points for winning roll call. Roll call videos or an email stating your school will be doing a live roll call must be submitted via email to spiritphilan.macurh2014atku@gmail.com by 10/15.

Banner MACURH delegations will submit electronic banners to be displayed throughout the conference at the Kansas Union in an effort to promote sustainability. Banners should show how each institution is unique and relates to one or all of the four pillars of the conference theme. Banners will also be judged based on creativity and originality. Each school will receive 5 puzzle points for submitting a banner and 50 puzzle points will be awarded to the winning banner. Banner must be emailed to spiritphilan.macurh2014atku@gmail.com by 10/15 in the format of a .jpeg or .pdf.

Display Displays should also show off how one or more of the pillars of the conference theme that are represented by each institution. They will be displayed at the Kansas Union. Displays will be judged based on originality, creativity, and how well it incorporates the conference theme. The dimensions of the displays should be within two cubic feet and should be less than five pounds. 5 puzzle points will be given to each school who submits a display and 50 puzzle points given to the winning display's school. Displays will be turned in during check-‐in at the Holiday Inn.

Silent Cheer Zones In order to encourage excitement and passion for MACURH at all times, this year we are going to do away with “No Cheering Zones”. Instead, we are going to have “Silent Cheering Zones” where delegates are encouraged to cheer silently using hand motions! We will be providing examples that everyone can use, but delegates can also feel free to make up their own. Delegations seen doing silent cheers have a possibility of getting puzzle points!

Puzzle Points At MACURH 2014, spirit and enthusiasm shown by delegations will be rewarded with “Puzzle Points”. Delegations can receive Puzzle Points by submitting and presenting programs, earning a top 10 program, participating in philanthropy events, submitting a top banner or display, and showing enthusiasm for MACURH or for their own school. Institutions can be rewarded for showing passion for MACURH during the conference as well as on social media before the conference. Puzzle Points will be updated regularly throughout the conference here.

Philanthropy Passive Philanthropy Delegates will continue the MACURH tradition of donating pop tabs to the Ronald McDonald House. The Ronald McDonald House provides shelter for thousands of families each year that must travel to receive medical treatment for a hospitalized child. Each school will collect pop tabs during the year. Institutions can choose to either bring the pop-‐tabs to the conference to be turned in at check-‐in or they can take the pop-‐tabs to their local Ronald McDonald House to be weighed. Institutions who opt for the latter must turn in the official receipt to the conference staff during check-‐in, email the receipt or a picture of it to spiritphilan.macurh2014atku@gmail.com. Every school that turns in pop tabs will earn 5 puzzle points, and the top small and large schools with the most tabs will receive 50 puzzle points! An additional 10 puzzle points will be awarded to each school who turns in their pop tabs at their local Ronald McDonald House. A large school is an institution where there are more than 1,000 students living on campus, whereas, a small school has less than 1,000 on campus residents. For more information, please visit the Ronald McDonald House Charities website!

Active Philanthropy

Since the theme of the conference revolves around the idea of many small parts of a puzzle coming together as a whole, the University of Kansas bid team has chosen to work with a program from our own school, the Little Steps ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) Early Intervention Program. Little Steps provides individualized, high quality learning opportunities for children with developmental disabilities such as Autism and Down Syndrome. The goal of the Little Steps program is for their students to acquire the skills necessary for inclusion in public schools, independent living, and development of meaningful social relationships. Delegates who participate will be creating puzzles to donate to the program. KU will provide blank puzzles in which the delegates will color. These puzzles will help the children in developing their cognitive and motor skills. For more information, please visit the Little Steps ABA Early Intervention Program website! 4
