About POPKON is created by an Anime, K-POP and a gaming fan whose life has been inspired, motivated and encouraged to be successful in life so he can buy Anime related posters, attend K-POP concerts and buy the latest games and devices; this person is also known as myself or as Jeff Pancho.
If you want to ask what I have spent my life since the last 5-6 years, then say no word because it’s me watching Anime on my laptop connected to the TV screen, me wearing my headphones or plugging my phone to the stereo blasting some K-POP goodness and me staying up all night playing video games. These things that I have found in my life have made the person I am right now. The only thing I regretted is how I wished I have found Anime, K-POP and the gaming universe much sooner.

I need a dose of each one every day to live for another day” I have decided to make an interactive magazine based on Anime, K-POP and video games which I currently have a serious addiction at, so I could also spread this fascinating world I ventured in. I want people who do not know anything about Anime, K-POP and video games to see for them how these things exist in out multicultural country we are living. I want them to know more about the different hobbies people have spent majority of their life in. I also want fellow Anime, K-POP and gaming fans to see my dedication of the work I have produced on the hobbies we all share.

The Gaming section shows some of the best games in 2014 for the Nintendo Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS. It will also showcase some upcoming games in 2015 for both systems.

The Nintendo Wii U is Nintendo’s 8th Generation console which was released in November 2012 and the successor for the Nintendo Wii. The Nintendo Wii U console supports high definition graphics, which allows game developers to make their games in stunning quality. The Nintendo Wii U comes with a new controller called the Wii U GamePad. The Wii U Gamepad has a mini touch screen in the middle, with control buttons at the side and at he back. Some Wii U games will allow you to play just on the GamePad, without using the TV Screen.

Nintendo 3DS The Nintendo 3DS is Nintendo’s next portable game console which was released in March 2011 and was the successor for the Nintendo DS. The Nintendo 3DS has a special feature which allows players to play their games in 3D. Players can see the transition from 2D to 3D, where the game turns into a living diorama. The 3DS now also has a Circle Pad on the left side, which allows games to be played in a much better and newer experience. The 3DS has a variety of different models such as the Nintendo 3DSXL and the Nintendo 2DS.

Your favourite kart - racing game is back and better than ever. Mario Kart 8 is the sequel to the last generation console Mario Kart Wii (2008) on the Nintendo Wii. And now with the new hardware, everything has been improved. From tracks, characters and kart designs to online integration made the next game in its series as stunning as always. There are a total of 36 playable characters 16 are default, 14 are unlockable and 6 are from the DLC (downloadable content) pack. These characters are placed into 3 categories light, medium and heavy. Their attributes affect the different karts you can choose and its stats.

Selecting your vehicle has also changed drastically. You can now choose the body, the tyres and the glider to make your own vehicle. Each part will affect you final stats which include, speed, acceleration, weight, handling and traction. Each part will have positive and negative outcomes on each stat, like choosing the monster tyres will give you good weight and traction but your acceleration and or example handling will reduce.

There are a total of 32 tracks, 16 of them are new and the other 16 are from past series. These tracks lets you dive in underwater, soar through the air and race upside down through the newly addition -antigravity. When entering antigravity mode, it lets you give a small boost when bumping into other players.

The Wii U Gamepad also has some awesome features to the game. The gamepad allows the player to play off screen, which allows them to play just on the game pad. They can also view the map, the position of the players and the item they’re holding and use the gyroscope mode to steer your vehicle using motion controls.
Balloon Battle Gameplay
Balloon battle also returns as a special mode to the series. Balloon Battle gives each player 3 balloons, and requires them to take away the enemies balloons by using items to gain points. You can also steal balloons by bumping into other players using a boost item.
Online multiplayer is also added which supports up to 12 players. This time, you can now create your own tournaments. Creating a tournament lets you choose to change the difficulty, turn items on or off, which vehicles, maps and more. A unique feature to it is that you can set when it starts and if you want it to repeat it in a certain day, for example every Sunday at 3pm. A new feature called Mario Kart TV allows you to view highlights of your recent matches which allow you to focus in different characters, or watch in slow motion. My thoughts on Mario Kart 8 Mario Kart 8 is one of the best racing games out there, which targets both casual and competitive players. The stunning 1080p visuals are breathtaking to look at and with 60fps it makes the tracks feel much better to drive on. There are tonnes of vehicles, tyres and gliders to choose from to match you’re playing style. The new feature MKTV really captures the great moments of your recent matches, it also allows you to watch and learn some of the problems you faced. The Battle mode is quite a disappointing feature because of the available tracks you can choose from. The tracks are the same ones in the standard game mode which makes it hard to find enemies at. Even though the battle mode was a disappointment, the core of the game is still as enjoyable as ever.

Hyrule Warriors is a hack and slash action video which is developed by Omega Force and Team Ninja. Hyrule Warriors is collaboration between Koei Tecmo’s Dynasty Warriors series and Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda series. The gameplay is from the Dynasty Warrior games, while the characters are from The Legend of Zelda games.
In Hyrule Warriors there are a total of 19 playable characters. Where 16 of them can be unlocked through the story mode and adventure mode while the other 3 are from DLCs. Each of the characters has their own attribute, skills, and weapons. Each weapon can be upgraded by combining another weapon to gain bonus effects.

Link is Hyrulian army’s strongest soldier who doesn’t just hold a sword and a shield to fight; he also uses a magic rod, gauntlet, horse and a spinner.
Zelda is the courageous and wise leader of Hyrule, who possess a sharp rapier which can cause destruction on the battlefield.
Impa is Princess Zelda’s bodyguard who protects her with her giant blade which can slash through anything.
The gameplay focuses on you fighting a horde of monsters which will continually respawn until you defeat them multiple times. Your job is to take over castles by defeating the monsters inside there while also not letting the characters die from battle. You will need to reach to the main castle where you will fight the stage boss and protect the world of Hyrule.
Lana is a magical user who uses a powerful book of sorcery which she intends to stop the evil overtaking Hyrule.

Adventure mode is a special mode where you use different characters to do special missions. This mode takes place in a grid map where if you completed that mission on the square you are able to move to other squares next to you. These missions can include things like defeating a certain amount of monsters in a given time. You can unlock more playable characters which are not from the story mode and also make your characters much stronger. My thoughts on Hyrule Warriors Hyrule warriors keeps you in the action by having tonnes of monsters across the map anywhere as you go, you are bound to meet one. With the addition of 2 player co-op mode, it will be much more enjoyable planning your strategies to which location needs help to the person next to you. Even though the 2 player mode does suffer some lag and frame rate issues, in the battle you will hardly notice it. The game also gives you a variety of characters which has different skills to one another which lets you perfectly find which character suits your playing style. If you are finding the game too easy or too hard, you can easily change the difficulty before you enter a new stage which allows the game to target all players with any experience in gaming. Hyrule warriors has a lot of replay value to go through especially how you have to collect materials dropped from the monsters to make your character stronger in strength and defence. Hyrule Warriors is definitely the game for you. If you are a fan of the Dynasty Warriors gameplay style, and the characters from the Legend of Zelda series, or if you just love killing a horde of monsters one after another.

Your ultimate Nintendo 2D fighting game, Super Smash Bros. is back and now on the Wii U and on the 3DS. The last game in the series was released on the Nintendo Wii in 2008. Since then fans around the world were eager for Nintendo to release the next game on the new consoles which uses a much better hardware. The game returns with its main game modes but has added new features to make the latest one the best in the series. The game features a total of 53 playable characters which is the biggest line up ever in the series. 35 of them return from past series, while 14 of them are newly added. For example Villager from the Animal Crossing franchise, Lucina from the Fire Emblem series, and Mega man, and 4 of the characters are Paid DLC.

8-Player GamePlay Video Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS returns the normal 4 player Smash mode and the special Smash mode were you can set your own rules for you and your friends to play on. The newly addition of 8 Player Smash mode takes the game to a much crazier level. You can play these game modes with the Wii U Gamepad, Wii Remote, Wii Remote + Nunchuk, Classic Controller Pro, Wii U Pro Controller, the Nintendo GameCube Controller and the Nintendo 3DS.

The game features a variety of different game modes for players to try. The All-star mode lets you go up against every character in a set of conditions. The Stadium mode allows you to defeat an army, destroy targets with a bomb and launch the Sandbag with your character’s skills as far as you can.

Smash Run for the Nintendo 3DS and Smash Tour for the Nintendo Wii U are the new game modes exclusive to each version. Smash Run is where you and 3 other players go into a massive dungeon and fight monsters to collect special abilities and characters to use. After the time limit all 4 players will battle it out with all of the special abilities and the characters they gain. It has a similar method in Smash Tour but instead of a dungeon it’s on a board game. Smash

Online multiplayer is also added in the game where you can fight against players around the world. There are 2 main modes in playing online multiplayer; For Fun and For Glory. In For Fun, you verse 3 other players where all of the items and stages are available. While in For Glory, items are turned off and you can only play on flat stages. For Glory mode, it has a ranking system where it determines who is the best Smash Player. Players can spectate live matches and make bets on who will win.
There are also extra things you can do in the game besides fighting. You can make your own Mii character as a playable character in the game from choosing 3 different classes, a Brawler, a Sword Fighter and a Gunner. You can customise existing characters by replacing some of their skills. You can also draw your own stages using the touch screen on the Wii U gamepad and share it online. You can take screenshots by pausing during the match and draw on the characters or add special effects and share it on Miiverse. Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U and the 3DS is the best one in its series that I have ever played. Nintendo placed all the modes which the fans love from the previous series and made them even more enjoyable to play. With tonnes of new characters, customisation and controllers to try out, there’s bound to be a set of style which would suit every player. With the game being 1080p and 60fps, it allows players to feel every action in the game. Super Smash Bros. on Wii U and the 3DS has tonnes of great content which players can enjoy themselves or with friends until the next one in the series is released.

Watch Trailer Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire is a role-playing video game from the Pokémon series which is developed by Game Freak for the Nintendo 3DS. The 2 versions are a remake of the 2002 Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire on the Game Boy Advance. The story is mostly similar to the past version where you meet Team Magma and Team Aqua who wants to use the legendary Pokémon’s for their own purpose. Team Magma wants to use Groudon to dry up the land while Team Aqua wants Kyogre to flood the lands. It is up to you to stop both from requiring the legendary Pokémon’s. The gameplay is similar to past Pokémon games where you battle other trainers with the Pokémon’s you caught on a turn-based battle.

Watch Trailer Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is a 2D side-scrolling platform game developed by Retro Studios and Published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Wii U. The story is about Donkey Kong and his 3 friends try to defeat the Snowmads who awakened the Ice Dragon which made everything frozen. Donkey Kong and his gang were blown away from their island and now must defeat and avoid hazards in other islands before they can reach their way back home where they must defeat the leader of the Snowmads, Lord Fredrik. Players are able to control Donkey Kong and the rest of his gang. Diddy Kong who has a barrel jetpack on his back who can fly across huge gaps. Dixie Kong who can spin her ponytail which can hover to the sky, and reach to higher ground. Finally, Cranky Kong who has his cane which allows you to bounce into hazardous surface such as the spiky thorns.

Watch Trailer Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is an action puzzle game developed by Nintendo EAD Tokyo Group No.2 for the Nintendo Wii U. The gameplay for this game is very similar to the Captain Toad minigame from Super Mario 3D World. Players will control Captain Toad to go through monsters and puzzles to be solved to enable you to reach the gold star at the end of each level. Players are required to change the camera in this 3D land for them find the correct route. Gamepad features are also added, for example using the gyroscope to go into a first-person view to shoot canons, or to touch platforms for it to move.

Watch Trailer Bayonetta 2 is a hack and slash video game developed by Platinum Games and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Wii U. In the game you play as the woman named Bayonetta (real name Cereza) who is an Umbra Witch who uses both melee and gunfire attacks. You see her fight angels and demons to save her friend Jeanne who was taken to the realm of inferno. The game focuses on players pressing multiple buttons to perfect the combo moves they make. Players are required to react quickly to dodge the enemy attacks for time to be slowed down enabling you to avoid lethal damage.

BUY HERE Amiibo are toy gaming figurines made by Nintendo which have a similar aspect to the Skylanders and the Disney Infinity series. The differences between them are that the Amiibo only work on the Wii U and on the 3D, and that these figurines work on multiple games not just one. The Amiibo uses Nintendo characters like Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser and Yoshi. The first wave was released in November 2014 and since then more than 10.5million have been sold across the world. As there has been huge demand for them, Nintendo is surely to release more characters and games compatible with them. In Mario Kart 8, players can scan their Amiibos to unlock special racing costumes for their Mii characters to use in racing. The costumes you unlock depend on what Amiibo’s you use therefore you scan a Sonic Amiibo you will unlock the Sonic costume. At present there are a total of 19 compatible Amiibos for the game, so check the Amiibo site to see which Amiibos are compatible. For Hyrule Warriors, players who have a Link Amiibo can scan it in the game to unlock a new weapon. For example the Spinner which was from the Zelda: Twilight Princess. Players can also scan any Amiibos 5 times a day in the game to unlock a mystery gift, which can include high rated weapons, rupees and materials to craft. Amiibo compatibility for Super Smash Bros. works by players training the Amiibo they scan in by battling against them. Players can customise their Amiibos by adding special attributes (having more attack, defence or speed), changing some of their skill sets and levelling them up (level 50 is the max level). This allows players to show who the best Smash trainer is by scanning their friend’s Amiibos to see who will come out on top.

Watch Trailer Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer is a spin-off of the Animal Crossing series which is developed by Nintendo EAD Group No.2 for the Nintendo 3DS. In this spin-off players will be required to design the interior and exterior of the Animal’s houses and local facilities, for example the school by following their demands. There will be tonnes of different items for you to use just like the variety in the mains series.

Watch Trailer Super Mario Maker is a level-editor 2D platformer game developed by Nintendo EAD Group No.4 for the Nintendo Wii U. Super Mario Maker allows players to create their own level designs based on the games: Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros. U. All of those 4 series have different art styles, enemies and block designs so that players can choose which series they want to create their own levels in. Players can also make any monsters or blocks they place at any size. Players can also share their own levels online and play other levels created by other players too.

Watch Trailer Splatoon is a third-person shooter game developed by Nintendo EAD Group No.2 for the Nintendo Wii U. Splatoon is centred on players being “Inklings” who shoot ink from their weapon which can be used to deal damage on opponents and let them transform into a squid form. Turning into a squid allows you to swim under the ink you placed on the ground and go up walls. Splatoon has a single-player campaign mode and an online multiplayer mode. In the single-player campaign mode, players must rescue the great Zapfish from the evil Octarians through numerous stages. The online multiplayer mode is a 4-on-4 battle where it is split into 2 categories: regular and ranked mode. In regular mode you play the game “Turf Wars” where the team who inks most of the map with their own colour wins. In rank mode you play the game “Splat Zones” where there is a special designated location where players must cover with their ink colour and protect it from the opponent team taking it. Players can also customise their gear by attaching different special abilities to suit their playing style.

Mario Party 10 is the fourteenth game in the franchise which is developed by Nd Cube for the Nintendo Wii U. Mario party 10 will have 3 game modes: Mario party, Bowser Party and Amiibo Party. The Mario Party mode is similar to the new style in Mario Party 9. As all 4 players travel across the map on some sort of vehicle to gain as many stars as they can through playing minigames and special spaces on the board all the way to the finish line. Bowser party is a 5 player mode, where one person gets to be Bowser and uses the Wii U gamepad in battling the other 4 players. The other 4 players are given a number of hearts which they need to make it through to the end of the board. Amiibo Party is where all 4 players scan their own Amiibo to play on a smaller scale board game. The gameplay is similar to the old Mario Party where you must get the most stars by getting coins to buy them.

Watch Trailer Xenoblade Chronicles X is an action role-playing game developed by Monolith Soft for the Nintendo Wii U. The game takes place in the year 2054 in Planet Mira, where all the remaining humanity has landed on after two alien races engage in battle which causes huge damage to planet earth. But this new life is still not safe for humanity where one of the alien races is still trying to destroy them once again. The game is centred in players exploring this new planet filled with small and huge monsters. Players can explore this vast land by foot or by these large humanoid robots called “Skells”. Players can ride on these Skells to fly around, transform into a vehicle and fight monsters with it. The game has a real-time action-based battle system where players use their character’s skills to attack these monsters. Players won’t be alone in their journey, as they are grouped with 3 other NPCs (Non-Playable Character) which players can also customise in.

Watch Trailer Yoshi’s Woolly World is a 2D side-scrolling platformer game developed by Good-Feel for the Nintendo Wii U. The story takes place in a world where it is filled with Yarn Yoshis and the environment is made out of yarn knits. Suddenly the evil wizard Kamek turns nearly all of the Yoshis into bindles of yarn, and scatters them across the world. However, there are 2 Yoshis who did not get caught and go into an adventure to find all of their friends and defeat the evil wizard Kamek. In order to do that, players must clear all of the levels which have their fellow friends inside each of them. Players will play as Yoshi who can defeat monsters by jumping on their heads or by eating them. Eating the monsters allows Yoshi to produce Yarn Balls which can be used to hit far enemies and create platforms for the players to get across on. The game will also be available in 2 players, allowing places where playing as a single player won’t be able to reached.

The section will also show the top stories in the KPOP world in 2014 which have heavily impacted the K-POP fans.
What is K-POP? K-POP is a music genre from South Korea which stands for Korean pop music. Even though K-POP is a genre, it still covers the main genres you find in music like dance-pop, ballad, electronic, R&B and rock. Most K-POP artists are formed in a group rather than as solo singers like the artists in the west. The positive aspect about this is that the singers will have fewer lines in the song, which allows them to save up more energy when performing live on stage. However, groups can have members leaving due to personal reasons like getting married or following a different path. This can affect the reconstruction of the group’s old songs and the profits they gain.
K-POP has been continually impacted not just in South Korea but also around the globe. Majority of these international K-POP fans do not speak or understand the Korean Language, but are still able to connect to the music. Most K-POP songs contain some English words in the chorus, which makes it much more enjoyable to sing along to especially for international fans. With the huge popularity that it has gained across the globe, most K-POP artists study’s the basic words of different languages so they can connect with their fans in their world tour concerts.

1 E 2N South Korean girl group 2ne1 released their highly anticipated second full-length album ‘Crush’ in February 2014.
Their latest album ‘Crush’ was a major hit in South Korea. Their title song “Come Back Home” was #1 for two weeks in Gaon and #1 for the entire month of March. The album also ranked No.61 on the U.S Billboard 200, making it the Highest Charting, and the Best Selling K-POP Album in the U.S.
2ne1 is a South Korean girl group who was formed by YG Entertainment in 2009. The group’s name derives from the phrases “21st century” and “New Evolution”, this describes how their music is new and unique. The group consists of members Minzy, CL, Dara and Bom (from left to right). Their debut single “Fire” was released on May 6, 2009. In that same year the group has won the ‘Best New Female Artists’, ‘Song Of The Year’, and ‘Best Music Video’ in Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA). Since then, the group has followed many successful songs such as, “I don’t Care”, “I Am the Best”, and their latest single “Come Back Home” is the main sin“Come Back Home”. gle in the album Crush. 2ne1 has won various awards in 2014, with their title track “Come Back Home”. They won the ‘Video of the Year’ in the YouTube Music Award and the ‘Best Electronica Song’ in the Melon Music Awards.
The music video is set in a future city, which had the concept of people preferring the virtual world over the real one. The music video cost more than half a million dollars to produce with the use of extensive computer graphics. The music video has also gained more than 37 million views on YouTube.

2PM released their fourth studio album in September 2014. It has been over a year since they released their last album “Grown” in May 2013.
2PM is a 6 member Korean boy group who was formed by JYP Entertainment in September 2008, with their debut single “10 Points Out of 10 Points”. The group consists of Taecyeon, Junho, Jun.K, Nickhun, Wooyoung and Chansung (left to right). 2PM had a seventh member Jay Park, who left the group in 2009 due to controversy regarding his hatred of Korea. EXO-K and EXO-M releases their third EP (Extended Play) album on May 2014. Their album was supposed to release in April, but due to the Sewol Ferry Accident where all of the singer’s releases got delayed.
EXO is a 12 member South Korean boy group formed by S.M. Entertainment on April 2012 with their debut single “History”. The group consist of Kris, Chanyeol, Sehun, D.O., Lay, Luhan, Kai, Suho, Chen, Xiumin, Baekhyun and Tao (left to right). The group is separated into 2 sub-groups, EXO-K and EXO-M with 6 members in each group. Both sub groups sing and release the same songs and albums, but EXO-K sings in Korean and promotes in South Korea while EXO-M sings in Mandarin and promotes in China. However in 2013, they released the album XOXO where all 12 members were put together and performed together in both Korea and China. Since their debut, the group has released hit songs such as “MAMA”, “Wolf”, “Growl” and their latest single “Overdose”.
The album has 5 songs, which are a mix of R&B, hip hop, and pop genres. The album became the most selling album in South Korean in 2014, with EXO-K selling 385 000 copies, while EXO-M selling 270 000 copies, which are a combined total of 655 000 copies sold. Super Junior released their seventh Korean studio album “Mamacita” in September 2014. It’s been over 2 years since they released their last album, but they are back with the return of Leeteuk and Heechul after their mandatory military service, while member Yesung leaves for 2 years.
Super Junior is a 13 member boy group formed by S.M. Entertainment in November 2005, with their debut single “Twins (Knock Out)”. South Korean girl group Sistar, released their third mini album ‘Touch N Move’ in July 2014, as their summer comeback.
Sistar is a 4 member South Korean girl group which was formed in 2010 under Starship Entertainment. The group consists of Hyolyn, Dasom, Bora and Soyou (Left to Right). The group’s debut song called “Push Push” was released on June 1. In that same year they won the Best Newcomer award in the Golden Disk Awards and in the Seoul Music Awards. Since then the group has released many successful songs such as, “So Cool”, “Alone”, “Loving U”, “Give It to Me” and their latest single “Touch My Body”.
Their ‘Touch N Move’ albums have ranked on top of the charts across different music sites. They were #1 on 9 various music charts 2 hours after it was released, it include Melon, Mnet, Genie, Daum, Naver and many more.
TOUCH MY BODY ‘“Touch My Body” is Sistar’s title track in their album ‘Touch N Move’. It is produced by Rado and Choi Kyu Sung, which described the song as a “hip hop dance song with an easy melody anyone can sing along to with a memorable saxophone melody”.

Akdong Musician is a duo K-POP group formed by YG Entertainment. The group consists of Lee Chanhyuk and Lee Suhyun who are siblings. The group debuted with the single “200%” from their debut album “Play” in April 2014.

It was also reported that member Prince Mak was not in the music video since he injured himself before filming. The song has a slow tempo but uses their powerful rapping and singing skills which sounded very powerful.

MAMAMOO is 4 member K-POP girl group formed by WA Entertainment. The group consists of Solar, Moonbyul, Wheein and Hwasa. Mamamoo debuted with the single “Mr. Ambiguous” from their album “Hello” in June 2014. The music video featured popular celebrities like CNBLUE’s Jonghyun, Baek Ji Young, Wheesung, Jung Joon Young, Bumkey and Rhymer who acted as trainers and showed the group techniques to improve their music videos.

HOT K-POP News in 2014
Dating & Marriage It was a crazy year for reporters in South Korea especially the famous new report sites such as “Dispatch” and “SportSeoul”. These sites provide pictures of celebrities going out which forces the company to confirm their relationship status.
The year started with Girls Generation’s Yoona and famous actor and host Lee Seung Gi who were first spotted together in the Han River area where they had their date there. A few days after Yoona’s relationship was confirmed, the next one was fellow member Sooyoung and actor Jung Kyung Ho who were both seen together in Sooyoung’s house at a Christmas Eve party she held.
Fast forward to April where another Girls Generation member was found to be dating, Tiffany with 2PM’s Nichkhun. When the news came out, apparently they had been dating for 4 months. Of course why not stop there, when we have Girls Generation’s Taeyeon with EXO’s Baekhyun. Dispatch says that the couple were seen on several dates, and helped each other in their hard times throughout the year. Girl Group f(x) member Sulli stopped promoting with her group the latest song “Red Light” after only 2 weeks due to her tiredness both mentally and physically which ignited rumours. However, in August SM confirmed that Sulli is dating idol group Dynamic Duo’s Choiza who is said to be supporting her during the pain she is suffering. With all these idols dating, Super Junior’s Sungmin confirmed the rumours himself that he is getting married to musical actress Kim Sa Eun. They first met in the musical “The Three Musketeers” which they both performed. I hope that these new couples will continue their relationships happily in 2015 and beyond.

Tragic Incidents 2014 wasn’t just filled with happiness from the songs the idols produced; it was also filled with a lot of sadness across the nation and around the world.
In April, a tragic accident occurred in South Korea when the Sewol Ferry carrying 476 people to Jeju Island who were mostly Students on a school field trip from Danwon High School, sunk in transit. A total of 304 lives were lost, and the whole nation grieved on. The incident led idols to postpone their song releases. Celebrities and entertainment companies have also donated a large sum of money to the families who have been affected in this tragic accident.
Another tragic event occurred in September, where the 5 member girl group Ladies’ Code had a serious car accident which led member’s EunB and RiSe to pass away. The group was returning back to their company after recording the KBS “Open Concert” when their manager who was speeding in a 100km/h zone during heavy rain, which caused the van to crash. It was also found that member EunB was not wearing a seatbelt in the back seat. With the group only debuting 1 year and 6 months, the girls still had their lives ahead of them.
Scandals & Lawsuits 2014 was also a tough year for some of our idols who were involved in some of the scandals in 2014.
In July, it was reported that girl group 2ne1’s Park Bom was found in a drug scandal where she ‘smuggled’ drugs from the United States to South Korea, 5 years ago (2010). But later, YG Entertainment’s CEO Yang Hyun Suk released an official statement about the issue, where Park Bom had experienced an extreme trauma and depression when she was still living in the United States. It was revealed that she had taken medication prescribed to her, but that medication was banned in South Korea. After providing medical records for the investigation, the issue was solved without any hassle.
In the following month, it was revealed that Kim Hyun Joong had assaulted his girlfriend many times in the past. After Kim Hyun Joong officially confirmed that it was true, his girlfriend just wanted a sincere apology from him instead of filing a case. In September it was reported that 4 member girl group GLAM member Dahee and model Lee Ji-Yeon has blackmailed famous actor Lee Byung-hun. After filing a case and holding numerous trials, it was announced that both girls are sentenced to one year in prison. On that same day, the company has ended GLAM’s contract which disbanded the group.

The Lawsuits continue in November, where all 6 members in boy group B.A.P. filed a lawsuit on their Agency TS Entertainment to nullify their contract. It was revealed that the boys have only been paid $16,000 USD, during the 3 years that they have been active as a group.
Time to Move on Being in a group for so long can cause conflict. Where one member wants to do something else with their lives or the timing of the comeback doesn’t suit them. In 2014, both of these cases have affected some of our favourite groups which hassled them to say their farewells.
It started off in January where girl group Kara’s members Nicole and Jiyoung have both reported that they will leave the group once their contract expires. Nicole was said to be focusing on her solo debut in another company, while Jiyoung will be studying abroad.
Another shocking member to leave the group is Girls Generation’s Jessica. Jessica has announced to her fellow fans that she will be focusing on her own fashion business called “BLANC & ECLARE”. Boygroup EXO was next to reveal some sad news to fans as it was revealed that group member Kris and Luhan will depart from the group. Both members announced that they will be focusing on their solo career in China with things such as acting, modelling and singing. As the year was about to end, it was announced that Lee Joon and Thunder from the boy group Mblaq will not be renewing their contracts. J.Tune Camp gave an official statement that Lee Joon will be focusing in his acting career, while Thunder will be studying on music to help in his future career. With all these artists who have started at a very young age practicing in singing, ing, and learning different languages it was expected for them to try something ent with their lives. I wish all of these members who have left and to the remaining bers in the group to be safe and have fun in their journey hoping the fans support both

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge was a phenomenal trend in summer 2014. The challenge required you to donate towards research on the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis disease, or to film yourself dumping a bucket of ice water on your head. It went viral on social media where even famous celebrities took part in it. And yes, it even spread here in the K-POP world. Members from groups such as EXO, Girls Generation, Bigbang, Secret, Wonder Girls, Super Junior, 2PM, Shinee, After School, Infinite and more took part in it.

What is Anime? Anime is an animation production, originated in Japan and is made by Japanese developers. Anime can be an episode series, a film, a game or it can be any form you see in television entertainment. Anime has a very unique art style compared to the animations which can be found in the west. Every artist and each studio has their own way of expressing their work to the public, but most of the time the characters they use are very similar to the human body in reality. Anime has your common genres like action, mystery, romance, comedy, drama and horror. But it also includes genres which are made from Japanese words. These genres are mostly used in the Japanese culture, where it groups up the animations much more so the viewers can easily find what they are looking for. Below are some of the Japanese genres and Japanese words that are commonly used in the Anime community.

Every year around the world, multiple Anime conventions are held where anime fans can cosplay their favourite characters and do fun activities together. Anime is now including English subtitles and dubs much quicker than before. Anime has also spread towards the gaming community, where popular Animes gets adapted into video games.

Raku Ichijou is your average high school student who happens to be the head of a Yakuza (Mafia) Family. My thoughts on Nisekoi Nisekoi has that typical love story where it has the childhood promise, being fake lovers and the misunderstandings between the characters. However, these cliché parts in the Anime are still very enjoyable to watch. We got Chitoge and Onodera, who are the opposite of each other’s personality somehow got tangled into Raku’s life. Throughout the Anime we get to see Chitoge try her best to get along with Raku, to conceal their true relationship. We have Onodera slowly find her confidence to confess her true feelings to Raku. My only disappointment in Nisekoi is how the addition of new characters, removes the depth in the Anime, and placed more cliché comedy elements. In conclusion, Nisekoi is your cliché romance show from the story and to the characters, which I found quite enjoyable to watch.
Chitoge Kirisaki is a very smart person, who can also speak fluently in both English and Japanese. She is very athletic and aggressive but can also be sweet and friendly. Kosaki Onodera Kana Hanazawa Onodera Kosaki is a kind, innocent, and slightly timid person, when it comes to Raku Ichijou, who she secretly likes. She thinks many possibilities carefully before she tries to act, like confessing to Raku.

My thoughts on Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works performs exceptionally well in certain areas, but for the others, not so much. In terms of the visual, FSN is one the best art styles I have ever seen in an Anime. The visual of the characters, the settings and the special effects during the fight scenes are just pleasing to the eye. It made me keep praising the developers every time I watch a new episode; it feels like something I would pay to watch in the cinemas. The story and the characters can be quite confusing throughout the show. The story is like the ’hunger games’, where a bunch of contestants fight it out to win the prize, but where it doesn’t perform well is through the characters. Some of the characters, who are the participants of this war only appear in certain episodes. This makes it hard to connect with the characters’ when something tragic happens. Another unappealing thing is that FSN is seen through the dialogue. While every fight scene in the Anime is amazing, the dialogue parts can be very boring especially how the characters uses complicated vocabulary, which I can understand since the servants are a representation of famous historical people. In the end Fate/ Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Work’s visual is enough for you to continue watching, even if the story and the characters aren’t that up to scratch.

The Anime No Game No Life was adapted from the light novel (short novel) which is written by Yuu Kamiya. The light novel debuted in April 2012, and since then both the sales and popularity have continually increased. In April 2014, it was reported that all 6 volumes have sold 1.1 million copies in Japan, making it in the top 10 most selling light novel series in 2014.

No Game No Life – from the title itself, already I knew I was going to fall in love with it. As a gamer, living in a world which everything is decided in games is a dream come true. The games they included could be as hard as chess or as easy as Tic Tack Toe but can determine Stephanie the way your race lives. With the addition of the 2 NEET gamers alike, Sora and Shiro make you feel on the edge of your seat from all of their strategic planning. It can be predictable of Yoko Hikasa who will win the game, but it’s ‘how they win’ really makes the show interesting. The art style is another reason to die for. The use of vibrant, bright colours makes you feel the ‘fantasy’ in this strange world. The Anime has a couple of references of games out there, like Phoenix Wright’s “Objection”, and the Yu GI OH card game. If I have to say a negative thing in the Anime, it would be the ‘Ecchi’ scenes in it. They can be a distraction to the main plot towards some people rather than a pleasing view. Rather than that, No Game No Life is one of the best Animes in 2014, and I highly recommend it.

Sword Art Online Season 2 takes place one year after the SAO incident. Since then, the players who were still alive after the game was completed continue to attend school and get back to society. We see Kirito (Kazuto Kirigaya) gets requested to investigate a new VRMMO game called Gun Gale Online (GGO). Apparently there is a bizarre incident where a player with a jet black gun was able to kill someone in the game and die in real life. Kirito accepted the request, and finds himself in a completely new world to Sword Art Online, where everything is about killing each other with guns…… or is it? The Sword Art Online Series has first started on light novels (Short Novels) in 2009, which is written by Reki Kawahara, since then the series have been receiving excellent sales. The light novels have sold over 16 million copies worldwide, making it one of the most popular light novels to get so much attention outside of Japan. A game has also been released about its series called ‘Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment’ for the PS VITA last year, and have sold over 400 000 units worldwide.
My thoughts on Sword Art Online II The second season of Sword Art Online had me intrigued with the world of GGO; from the swords in SAO, and the magic in ALO, to the world of guns. In GGO, they are able to capture the same experience you get from those games, but a lot better. With the addition of Death Gun, they are able to show the feeling of dying in real life from Kirito and Sinon. Death gun also makes you keep thinking who is the person behind that mask and how is he able to kill players in real life. Sadly the Anime didn’t capture me in terms of the characters and the story development. The story was mainly focused in one tournament, where we got less shooting and killing actions, and more of Sinon and Kirito’s development from their past. I felt no sympathy to either one of them. They had the themes in the correct place, but along the way it somehow lost its connection with the audience. If only they had more interesting strategic actions, it would have made it up for the weak character development. In the end, the second season has many flaws in terms of the characters, but it still keeps you watching, in finding out about who is this Death Gun, and how did he do it all.

This romance comedy Anime starts when a high school girl Sakura confesses her crush to Nozaki. Nozaki thought she was a fan and wanted an autograph of him. Sakura then realised that Nozaki is a famous Shoujo (Romance/Comedy) Manga (Comic) Artist. She then helps him with his work every day so she can try to persuade him to like her. The Anime Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-Kun was adapted from the manga (by the same name) which released in August 2011, and it is written by Izumi Tsubaki. Since then the manga has a total of 6 volumes and have sold nearly 1 million copies in Japan. The series was also placed number 3, on the top 15 manga recommended by bookstores in 2013. It was also ranked number 11 in the top 20 manga for female readers in 2014.

My thoughts on Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-Kun Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-Kun is a fun loving show, filled with comedy and romance. The Anime can give the audience an insight into how mangas (comics) are created. From getting ideas such as the storylines and the characters, to how they draw each character in the book. The Anime is also filled with various types of characters that feel like the writer combined different personalities from rom-com Animes into one show. It has characters like a beautiful female student which has a large fan base among other female students, a tomboyish girl who has an angelic voice and a playboy guy who is actually quite shy. These characters are what make the show so enjoyable and unique from other Animes.
Ari Ozawa Sakura is a petite girl whose confessions to Nozaki turned her into one of his assistants even though it’s not what she wanted, she is still happy to be with him. Mikoshiba
Nobuhiko Okamoto In terms of the storyline it doesn’t quite develop as much towards the end of the show. The 2 Mikoshiba is one of Nozaki’s assistants main protagonists still don’t have that ‘romantic’ relationship, but we do see their friendship improving. In conclusion Gekkan shoujo Nozaki-Kun is really targeted to people who love who is in charge of drawing special effects, accessories and flowers. Mikoshiba acts rom-com series but have a very slow development in the romance section. I had quite a lot of and looks like a playboy but is actually laughs from it, and I’m hoping to get to know more about these amusing characters. quite shy.

These “ghouls” have the same characteristics as humans but can only eat humans. One day, college student named Kaneki meets a girl named Rize who has the same interest as him. The manga was first released in September 2011 and ended in September 2014 and has a total of 14 volumes. My thoughts on Tokyo Ghoul Tokyo Ghoul captures a society of 2 different creatures, ghouls and humans, living in the same land and breathing in the same air. It also showed them the theme of ‘change’ and ‘belonging’ through the male protagonist, Kaneki. He was a human, but turned him into a half ghoul where he belongs in both with the ghouls and the humans. The fight scenes between ghouls and their kind and between the CCG group is also very intense to watch. There is ghoul special powers and the CCG’s weapons going all out on each other. The large amount of characters in the Anime can be enjoyable to watch, but the lack of back story and development, can make them seem very “unimportant”. Another thing I dislike in the Anime is the overuse of censorship during and after the fight scenes. I understand that they have to censor it because of laws about age ratings, but it can affect your enjoyment of the Anime. Tokyo Ghoul is an amazing show to watch where we are able to connect with both worlds and continually ask ourselves “which side should we stand for?”

My thoughts on Amagi Brilliant Park Amagi Brilliant Park gives us an idea of what happens behind the scenes in amusement parks when we visit it with friends and family. We are able to see what plans they have to bring more people in, and where the workers get their strengths from. With a large variety of characters, for example fairies, cute bears, talking dolphins, screw drivers and a wrestler, will bring tonnes of smiling faces to all of us. Having that “amusement park” theme happening through the characters, we can also see it in the visual aspect of the Anime. The art style is colourful and bright, from the different design of the attractions, to the evening fireworks. Amagi Brilliant Park really shows the ‘magical’ feeling we get from places like Disneyland onto our TV screen. It will have you laughing, hoping for them to succeed and cheering for their achievements.
Isuzu is the vice manager once Seiya accepted the request. She rarely shows any emotions and which her voice always sounds in monotone. She is mostly cold and blunt towards others.
