JESSICA POST is recently married and trying to be the perfect housewife. An interior design graduate, her hobbies are centered on art, design, homes, and themed parties. When she’s not going through design websites, she’s probably reorganizing her house or obsessing over Martha Stewart’s cleaning books. On page 56 and 62, Jessica shows us around her hometown Cagayan de Oro’s latest happening spots and a wonderful sidetrip to Bukidnon. CRISTINA TANTENGCO is a journalist, TV addict, and lover of good food. Kamusta? (kamustamagazine. ph), the start-up travel magazine she founded with her friends, was nominated as Young Star Blog of the Year at the 2013 Globe Tatt Awards. On page 40, Cristina falls in love with Seoul. Recently chosen by Reader’s Digest Asia as one of the country’s most trusted people, GREGG YAN serves as the Communications Manager for WWF-Philippines, chronicling field stories and highlighting environmental solutions. Through the years, he’s had some close calls. Though he’s been kicked by wild forest elephants in Borneo, nearly skewered by a tamaraw in Mindoro, stalked by sneaky crocodiles in Malaysia and gone fin-to-fin with a tigershark in Tubbataha, his most terrifying experience was when a He Man-like ladyboy threatened to mash him into Play-Doh in Thailand. Join him and a team of dedicated scientists as they take a closer look at the grounding scars left by a Chinese and an American vessel at the Tubbataha Reefs on page 50.

PRESIDENT’S NOTE

Welcome Our New Fleet This month marks an important milestone in Philippine Airlines’ transformation into a leading global network carrier. We’re proud to welcome the newest member of our growing fleet, the Airbus A321–the first of 64 brand-new aircraft we ordered exactly a year ago in what was the largest aircraft purchase in Philippine aviation history. The arrival of two A321 jets this month triggers an extremely busy delivery schedule for PAL over the next six years. For the remainder of 2013, we’re taking delivery of 10 more aircraft, followed by 17 in 2014, 15 in 2015, 10 in 2016, two in 2017, four in 2018 and four in 2019. For now, let me acquaint you with the A321, destined to become the linchpin of the PAL fleet well into the future. This remarkable aircraft has been described as the most efficient single-aisle jetliner ever built, and for good reason. If you like the Airbus A320, the reliable workhorse of our single-aisle fleet, you’re going to love the A321. Imagine the A320, stretch it by about 23 feet to take in more seats and cargo, install powerful V2500 engines from IAE, equip with advanced avionics from Thales, plus the latest blended winglet design from Airbus, and you have a superior aircraft in the A321. Still, it’s what’s inside that sets PAL’s A321 apart from the rest. It starts with an interior design that’s unmistakably Filipino. From the carpet, seat covers, and curtains to the laminates, the front of the cabin is swathed in buoyant beige–a warm, welcoming color that makes you feel right at home. The rest of the cabin is decked out in hues of blue, evoking the seas and skies of the Philippines. Our A321 is designed to comfortably accommodate 199 passengers in three classes: Business Class, with 12 seats; Premium Economy, with 18 seats; and Economy, with 169 seats. In Business Class, the Weber 7070 seat offers a comfortable pitch of 37 inches along with an ergonomic design that provides greater knee and leg room plus articulating bottom support. Other seat amenities include 120-degree recline, six-way adjustable headrest, extendable legrest, audio system, universal power ports, and USB ports. Premium Economy, a new PAL product, has Weber 5751 “slim line” seats that feature a 34-inch pitch, four-way adjustable headrest and articulating bottom where the seat pan slides forward while the back reclines. This novel design optimizes passenger space and adds appreciably to the comfort level. Guests in Economy Class have the same seat at a pitch of 30 inches. In-flight entertainment is provided by an amenity unique to PAL–mini iPads from Apple, Inc. These are loaded with a variety of entertainment options, from movies to music, games and publications. Having iPads onboard is another feat for PAL–it makes us the first full-service airline in Asia to offer this service. If you happen to be sitting in the new A321 on one of our Asian regional flights, enjoy the ride!

Coming Soon – Abu Dhabi and Europe

I

t’s an exciting time for Philippine Airlines and travelers. Last July 12, the European Union announced that PAL would be allowed to have direct flights to Europe. This is definitely good news as Filipinos can now visit Europe with PAL on shorter flights, providing savings in travel time and airfare plus getting better service. It is also going to be a boom for our tourism by making it easier for European tourists to visit our shores. Our cover and main feature on Abu Dhabi is to announce that PAL will soon be flying to this major hub in the Middle East. Keep yourself posted, as booking early will allow you to enjoy promos for these future flights. Abu Dhabi is considered the world’s richest city and its per capita income of $48,200 even surpasses the United States, which is $46,820. Our writer, Christina Fernandes, notes that this exciting city is a “collection of opposites.” Indeed, it is. On one hand, it has tradition – Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the world’s largest mosques; while in modernity, it has the first Ferrari World Theme Park in the world. Perhaps improving on its rich neighboring Emirates, Abu Dhabi has also adopted a strict development policy centered on sustainability. The Philippines is on a hot roll. Last year, the influential Travel + Leisure magazine ranked Boracay as Number One among the “World’s Top 10 Islands”. This year, the magazine rated Palawan as No. 1 and Boracay No.2. Considering the competition, this is a valuable recognition and endorsement. Our Department of Tourism should be complemented for creating the awareness that led to these prestigious awards. On a final note, we want to share with you that we won an “Award for Excellence for the Best Feature on Asian Travel” category for our August 2012 Cebu article entitled “Of Party Animals, Wildlife, and History” in the recent Asian Publishing Convention held in Manila. It’s a fun piece written by Lori Blackburn on how you can party in Cebu City and the next morning, drive a few hours away to the town of Oslob and swim with whale sharks. Francisco Guererro and Erwin Lim captured the story’s outstanding images. It’s the 19th award that we have won for Mabuhay magazine and this winning streak is made possible by the wonderful teamwork by all our staff and contributors.

THE CRUMPLER SPRING PEEPER DUFFEL BAG ON WHEELS.

BAG NERDS SINCE ’92

INSPIRED BY A FREAK WEATHER-INDUCED NATURE DOCUMENTARY MARATHON.

SPRING PEEPER (M) - CARRY-ON LUGGAGE 40 Litres big, 2.95 Kg light.

The resort was beautiful. The early monsoon rains, biblical. To kill time, we had two choices: the nature channel or ‘No Satellite Signal’. Mostly we opted for the former. Among its riveting programming, an obscure frog-umentary on the Canadian Spring Peeper. A species, and holiday, not easily forgotten. While Crumpler product naming may lack rhyme and reason, our design approach is anything but random. Uber luggage nerds, we consider every usage situation and detail from the ground up: exterior fabrics are chosen for extreme longevity and waterproofed on both sides; wheels and wheel housing are designed to fend off gravel and dirt; the underside of handles are neoprene cushioned, making them both soft to touch and ultra durable; and zips and handles are shaped to follow exterior contours, giving

each Spring Peeper the strength to withstand prolonged baggage-handler brutality. Inside a Spring Peeper there’s not all that much to speak of — just the right number of right-sized pockets in all the right places. Plus compression straps to keep everything right places. Plus compression straps to keep everything tidy. You’ll find a Crumpler logo in there as well, which means your duffel is covered by our famous ‘Til Death Do Us Part Guarantee. Why go to such lengths? Because we believe true luxury is the absence of problems, and that as our customer, you deserve nothing less. Bag nerds since ’92, that’s us.

A tAste of hoMe in Zoricho Every once in a while, you crave for a taste that brings you home—familiar, no-frills, and yet savory. That’s exactly what you’ll find in Zoricho, which features the heirloom recipes of their matriarch, Alita Yulo de los Santos Acuña. First-timers should try the longganisa platter, a delightful spread of savory sausages from different regions in the Philippines such as Vigan, Tuguegarao, and Lucban. For something more indulgent, Zoricho recommends their bagnet dinuguan (deep fried pork belly with pig blood stew) and bagnet kare-kare (deep-fried pork belly with vegetables in peanut sauce). Bacon lovers will also find a healthier alternative in the crispy tapa, thin strips of beef fried to crunchy perfection. It’s the perfect beer grub and also goes well with rice. a toast to PoRtuguese FlavoRs Touted as the place for authentic Portuguese cuisine, O’sonho recently launched its new creations. There’s a selection of a hearty salad, Patacom Salada Lychias (RIGHT) or marinated duck with lychees, a well-composed dish combining salty and sweet essence. A favorite among its clientele is the Bifanas De Porco, a spice-laden sausage appetizer. With each bite I took, I appreciated this well thought out recipe’s succulent taste. Another discovery I loved was the Lengua de Vaca. Drenched in its delicious sauce, the meat has a very soft texture, the perfect nibble for your gastronomic indulgence. Finally the Ciao Madrid Paella Pasta (LEFT) is a definite must try. Expect the Unexpected Opus XIII once again defies the conventional rules of watchmaking. Fifty-nine pivoting minutes hands, eleven rotating triangles for the hours, and a sliding trapdoor perform a magic show where minutes and hours appear or vanish instantly—and, of course, tell the time. But don’t expect a massive timepiece. In fact, the Opus XIII looks relatively discreet, even mysterious, its inner workings covered by a facetted dome. Opus XIII, which reinvents time, once again illustrates the creative explosion triggered between the Harry Winston team of designers and watchmakers and its partners in the Opus Series. Harry Winston believes nothing in watchmaking is beyond human ingenuity, and Opus XIII invariably proves it right. Greenbelt 5, Ayala Center, Makati City

MaBuhay, europe! After 15 years, PAL will once again have flights to Europe! The European Union has lifted the ban on Philippine Airlines to fly to the continent. PAL will fly to popular destinations such as London, Paris, Rome, Madrid, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt. Credit goes to the Philippine government’s efforts for this development in the local aviation industry.

asia’s Laggard no More Growing at a stunning 7.8 percent, the Philippine economy expanded faster than China’s in the first three months of 2013. Considered one of Asia’s best performing economies (along with Thailand and Indonesia), the Philippines has effectively cushioned itself from the effects of the global financial crisis through financial reforms, strong domestic consumption, and record-high remittance from overseas Filipinos. TRES CHIC: Harlan + Holden lives by these three words—”freedom”, “feminine”, and “modern”.

A BREATH OF FRESH FLAIR

H

arlan + Holden exhales refined, relaxed pieces into women’s wear this season—it combines comfort with minimalist design and detailing focused on ease and hassle-free visuals. Abandoning the formula of form and function, this local brand releases freedom and femininity in its wake. Focusing on how a woman feels before how a woman looks is the secret philosophy behind every piece. Trying on the items upon first look will allow the magic of its fluidity and movement to be felt, not just seen. Foregoing any judgments based on “hanger appeal”, the modern lady receives this message with ease. Worldly and experienced in the shopping process, they understand Harlan + Holden’s clean lines, luxurious fabrics, soft pastels and simple neutrals. The slouchy

silhouettes and the romanticism in the fabrics are merely to enhance an already good impression. Wearing Harlan+Holden’s roomy dresses will undoubtedly become known as a sophisticate’s advanced move in the right direction. The female jetsetter in particular, will appreciate the stylish yet effortless ease of movement of these pieces. This is precisely the understated signature of a Harlan + Holden: a Manila-made, stress-free style that is simply felt and most importantly, loosely worn. No self-styling woman of the world would appreciate this any less. Harlan+Holden is located at the Power Plant Mall in Rockwell, Makati City. n

M Aura Premier, SM Prime Holdings’ latest high-end lifestyle destination, redefines the retail and lifestyle scene in the country. Add to that the presence of Hollywood style icon Sarah Jessica Parker, the new face of the SM Store, during its opening, and you’ll see that this is poised to be the “it” place when it comes to shopping. SM Aura Premier consists of a mall and office tower designed to stand out. With its sculptural form, many images can be read into the composition: the flow of water, the turbulence of air, and the strata of the earth. Architect of record Willy Coscolluela draws inspiration from the elements of nature itself. But what sets the mall apart is its commitment to sustainable design and development and green architecture to reduce the structure’s carbon footprint. It’s enhanced with sustainable operations: pollution and waste management systems are planned for maximum efficiency; a water-treatment facility to recycle water for nonpotable use is in place; a massive green roof is designed to reduce the heat island effect in the structure; and international green standards are strictly followed to ensure the efficient use of energy and other resources. SM Aura Premier brings together the best of both international and

Among these are Suiteblanco, Stefanel, BB Dakota, J Lindberg, and Farah Vintage for fashion, as well as Paul Boulagerie, NBA Café, and Todd English Food Hall for dining. Likewise, the mall will showcase the first of next-generation SM Stores, Supermarket, Kultura, Watsons, Our Home, Toy Kingdom, as well as the latest collections of Forever 21 and Uniqlo. Movie buffs will also love the mall’s two digital cinemas: two director’s club cinemas, which can be rented out for block screenings and private film showings, and the first-ever IMAX Theater in Taguig City. Other attractions include The Sky Park, with its al fresco dining amid landscaped garden and water features; the Samsung Hall, an events place with unique dome design set against a lush garden; and the Chapel of San Pedro Calungsod. For its customer’s convenience, SM Aura Premier has 1,771 parking slots, including those for bicycles, persons with disabilities, and fuel-efficient vehicles. There are also bicycle paths and landscaped recreational areas around the vicinity, ensuring that the community will continue to breathe fresh air while enjoying an exciting lifestyle. n

bu Dhabi often seems like a collection of opposites. It’s ancient Arabia meets modern metropolis; contemplative Bedouin tradition blended with an unquenchable ambition for the future; high rises and land reclamation projects pushing their way across vast deserts and natural islands. As a result, a visit to the UAE’s capital can be a surprisingly versatile, if slightly schizophrenic experience. The city is home to the UAE’s government offices, and its ruler is also the country’s president. Owning almost 10 percent of the world’s oil and gas reserves, it has been named one of the world’s richest cities. Thus, its urban planners have poured their resources into constructing ambitious architectural ventures, as well as building a world-class center for sports, culture, and arts. 26 I Mabuhay Magazine I August 2013

Tourism experiences are no less paradoxical than anything else about Abu Dhabi and visitors have a choice of hitting high-end boutiques versus kayaking through mangroves, racing around the Formula One track at breakneck speed, or wandering across sand dunes on camel back, visiting historical forts or relaxing on one of the numerous beaches. Shopping is one of the emirate’s favorite pastimes and Abu Dhabi’s collection of malls does not disappoint. Marina Mall is the city’s biggest and glitziest and home to an ice rink, a bowling alley, and musical fountains. PAL ShineS Anew The Philippines’ flag carrier rises up to the challenge with its spic-and-span, brandnew fleet, B.C. LEE writes.

n board a long-haul flight that will have you crossing several time zones? Sleep it off snuggled in plush, comfy, and spacious seats. Traveling with restless youngsters? No sweat, for there are even more in-flight entertainment options available, from the latest blockbuster films to popular games and music. Couldn’t hide the geek within? Well, let it all out with the latest in-flight connectivity technology. All this and more are what await first-time Philippine Airlines passengers and frequent flyers. Beginning August 2013 until 2019, the country’s national airline is rolling out its $9.5 billion fleet modernization program featuring a 64-aircraft order, the largest aircraft deal in the history of Philippine aviation. The all-Airbus express delivery shines with its 34 units of the A321 classic, 10 units of the A321 new engine option, and 20 units 32 I Mabuhay Magazine I August 2013

of the A330-300 High Gross Weight model. Currently PAL has in its roster 46 aircraft, which has an average age of 9.95 years. Although the much-awaited modernization is creating lots of buzz, this isn’t the first time it has happened. According to its officials, PAL has periodically undertaken fleet modernization programs in recent years. From 2006 to 2008, PAL acquired 15 new generation aircraft — the Airbus A320 family of 11 A320s and four A319s — for its singleaisle fleet modernization program. Meanwhile, its long-range fleet was also being spruced up when from 2009 to 2013, it acquired six Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. The modernization program of all its fleet was also planned for 1996 to 1998, when 36 Airbus aircraft (28 units) and Boeing (8 units) was set to be delivered for a four-year period beginning

OFF TO GREATER HEIGHTS: The fleet modernization efforts are strategic for Philippine Airlines’ route expansion in new destinations like the Middle East and Australia (TOP); A330-300 Economy Class high-density seating (LEFT); A330-300 Premium Economy Class high-density seating (RIGHT).

1996. The Asian financial crisis in mid-1997, however, resulted in a downward trend in air travel, which adversely affected the program. Says PAL officials, “Twenty-four aircraft had already been delivered but most were returned and rest of the order cancelled. By 1999, when PAL entered receivership, only 13 of the original aircraft deliveries were part of the fleet.” With the new PAL management, however, the re-fleeting program is seen to further strengthen the flag carrier, as well as help boost the country’s economy. PAL chairman Lucio C. Tan and president Ramon S. Ang were quoted as saying that current and long-term orders “will play a key role in revitalizing PAL and growing trade and tourism in the country” and that current management can “help support that growth by having a strong airline,” which translates to more revenue to the economy. “Most of the (100) new airplanes will replace the old airplanes, while others will be reserved for expansion,” says Ang. The great thing about new fleet is that the aircraft are practically maintenance-free for the first five years. The new fleet means fuel

34 I Mabuhay Magazine I August 2013

and maintenance costs will be reduced to about 40% from the current 60% of PAL’s sales revenues amounting to $2 billion. A 25% growth in revenues for the current fiscal year ending in March 2014 is also expected. Ang assures everyone that the arrival of the new aircraft promises a major turnaround for PAL. With the new fleet, PAL sees resumption of flights to the Middle East and Europe, as well as to more United States destinations, particularly in the Midwest and the East Coast. The good news is that the European Union has lifted the ban on PAL to fly to Europe, which further drives home the point that PAL is a safe airline. Thus, PAL is now preparing for its much-awaited return to popular European cities — London, Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Rome, and Madrid — after 15 years of absence from European skies. As soon as the Philippine government gets to meet the one other remaining barrier — to restore the country to a Category 1 rating with the US Federal Aviation Administration — then PAL can fully spread its wings and soar once more. n

RUINS REINVENTED: Today, the former Factory 751 area has been reinvented as a fashion and design hub. Indeed, 751 D-Park is a fixture of such events as China Fashion Week.

HIGH ART RISES FROM BEIJING’S INDUSTRIAL ASHES OZ MENDOZA takes us around Beijing’s emerging melting pot of all things art, Dashanzi. 751 D-Park and 798 Art Zone. Here, postapocalyptic grunge meets hipster contemporary in a fascinating fusion of artistic reinvention, engineered solution, and good old-fashioned Chinese pragmatism. There is definitely something compelling about the weather-beaten brick walls, the wrought-iron walkways, and the complex tangle of cantilevered pipes that inhabit the otherwise clipped and manicured grounds of 751 D-Park. At close to sundown, the space becomes hauntingly silent, the stillness almost demanding to be broken by the sounds of clanking machines, factory whistles, and hissing exhaust fumes. Yet all is quiet, and the complex turns out to be a fine setting for a leisurely stroll or bicycle tour.

How to Get There The easiest way is to take a cab. Tell the taxi driver that you want to go to 798. If that doesn’t work, then ask to be taken to Dashanzi.

hen asked to think about “art and fashion,” what normally comes to mind? “Art” is likely to spark a memory of a famous painting or sculpture, or some timeless piece of graphic art such as Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss. “Fashion” might bring up images of sleek runway shows or poised women in Prada strutting down New York’s Fifth Avenue. Less likely to come to mind are visions of corroding machinery, rusty metal pipes, and towering smokestacks. Yet such views abound in the streets and alleyways of Beijing’s most vibrant art and fashion district, Dashanzi—home to the refurbished factory spaces of

PHOTO Courtesy of Philip Larson of Wikimedia commons (TOP);

OLD AND NEW: Just 30 minutes away from Dashanzi is the Forbidden City, where you can spot equally grand but more traditional structures from China’s past.

In 1957, these grounds were part of a massive industrial area known as Joint Factory 718, a center for wireless joint equipment production. It had initially been designated as a follow-up to 156 “joint factory” projects that the then-Soviet Union and the People’s Republic of China had established. But the Soviets backed out of the 157th project and suggested East Germany as a new building partner. And so Joint Factory 718 was planned and engineered by the Chinese, the East Germans, and one remaining Russian consultant, who proved untiringly critical of the Germans’ way of doing things. The Russian, along with many of the Chinese, frothed over the Germans’ insistence on highquality but costly construction standards. But the Germans’ standards prevailed, and the factory that arose exemplified Teutonic aesthetics, in particular a functionalist mode of design reminiscent of the Bauhaus School. Counted among the best industrial plants in China, Joint Factory 718’s luster would fade over time. The first blow arrived in 1964, when the massive complex

got subdivided into a multitude of smaller plants, including factories 751 and 798. By the early 1990s, most of the factories had been shuttered, leaving abandoned husks of old buildings in dire need of new tenants. Gradually, avant-garde artists began moving in and occupying the abandoned spaces, many of them within the zone of the former Factory 798. Widespread awareness of the 798 art community skyrocketed with the 2002 opening of Beijing Tokyo Art Projects and its inaugural exhibition, “Beijing Afloat.” The success of 798 got carried over to other parts of Dashanzi district, particularly Factory 751, which had been a coal gas plant for 40 years before it was abandoned in 2003. But many remnants of the past linger in plain sight. You can still see the factory’s old train station, where a massive locomotive sits on permanent display. The railway actually remains in use for coal and oil transportation. A walk through 751 zone will also take you past hulking boilers, overarching gas lines, piles of rusted tubing, and clusters of derelict machinery.

Tips on Getting Around 1. Always carry the name of your destination written down in Chinese characters. Bring a good map with you as well. Better yet, bring a smartphone or tablet equipped with GPS and the Google Maps app. 2. Beijing requires taxi passengers to pay a fuel surcharge fee on top of the flag-down charge and meter fare. 3. Ask the taxi driver for a receipt at the end of your ride. The receipt will include info about the taxi, which may prove useful in case you need to find it again. If you receive a handwritten receipt, that means you probably rode in a black cab. 4. Taking a black cab (an unofficial, unregistered taxi) is not necessarily a bad idea. Beijing’s taxi drivers are notoriously picky about passengers, especially during the rush hour. 5. Avoid taking motorized rickshaws as much as possible. You are likely to get ripped off, and the rickshaw rate isn’t cheaper compared to the taxi meter fee. If you’re out after midnight, you may end up with little choice but to take a rickshaw. 6. It’s not uncommon in Beijing for two strangers to share a taxi. If you end up sharing a taxi with another passenger, know that you need not pay more than 60% of the fare on the meter if you have the same destination. 7. At certain areas, such as Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, taxis are not allowed to stop to pick up passengers. If you’re in one of those areas, walk a block or two and then you can hail a cab. Better yet, just take the subway.

STEAM PUNK: High style and industrial detritus at the 751 zone combine to inspire a sense of surprise and delight.

It’s a lot of fun simply exploring Dashanzi on your two feet. Every few steps will lead you to an interesting sight, whether it be a ghostly remnant of its industrial past, or a startling display of provocative urban aesthetics—especially in the summer months, when artists paint portraits of famous people up and down the street. If do you want to know of specific establishments to check out within the district, here are a few suggestions: 798 Space is an art gallery known for its signature high, cylindrical ceilings that permit natural light to permeate a large part of the exhibition space. One ironic, retro touch: old Communist Party sayings have been preserved upon the walls, including a slogan proclaiming, “We wish that Chairman Mao live forever!” Timezone 8, a bookstore, happens to be one of the district’s original historic landmarks. Founder Robert Bernell, an art collector and scholar, was the first foreigner to set up a business in the 798 zone. Timezone 8 is a cozy nook in which to sip a

38 I Mabuhay Magazine I August 2013

cappuccino and browse deep stacks of books on art, design, architecture, and photography. Its expanded operations now include a Timezone 8 restaurant, Timezone 8 bar, and Timezone 8 sushi bar. At Cafe is another historic establishment, owned and designed by Huang Rui, a pioneer of Chinese avant-garde art. Huang Rui was one of the first artists to open a studio in Dashanzi, and was a key participant in efforts to keep the zone from being demolished in the mid-2000s. At Cafe is the place to go for premium Italian coffee. There is much more to see and discover at Dashanzi. Surely no other place so successfully combines industrial junk, cutting-edge fashion, Bauhaus aesthetics, urban street style, and elements of traditional Chinese culture. Whether you’re a lover of contemporary art, or simply curious about how creativity revitalized an industrial wasteland, you’ll find a visit to 798 Art Zone and 751 D-Park a refreshing experience. n

IT’S A SMALL wORLD AFTER ALL: If you want to experience the best of Seoul in one go, then Lotte World is your best bet. In addition to the theme park, it also houses a hotel, a department store, a duty-free shop, a folk museum, and the largest ice rink in South Korea.

FALLING IN LOVE WITH SEOUL

N

amsan may be the most famous of Seoul’s romantic destinations, but there are many more charming hideaways scattered throughout the vibrant capital of South Korea. You don’t have to be a honeymooner to see its charms either. No matter who you’re traveling with, you’ll find yourself falling in love with Seoul.

“GETTING TO KNOw YOu” It all starts here. For Seoul at a glance, head to the historical gu (district) of Jongno. Here, you can visit four great palaces preserved from ages past: Gyeongbokgung, Changgyeonggung, Changdeokgung, and Gyeonghuigung. Gyeongbokgung is the largest of the four, and contains the Gyeonghoeru Royal Pavilion and the National Folk Museum. From there, you can also walk to the King Sejong Statue at Gwanghwamun Plaza or the Bukchon Hanok Village, a residential area of

preserved hanok, or traditional Korean houses. Traditional arts come alive in the cultural neighborhood of Insadong, where you can shop for inlaid lacquer ware, celadon pottery, and hanbok (traditional costume). The National Souvenir Shop is a good one-stop shop, but you’ll find more unique items at the smaller artisanal stores. Near Insadong is Star Café Miss Lee, a coffee shop for the sentimental. The main décor here is a large “tree” whose leaves are small pieces of paper containing messages from diners. Try their sweet pumpkin latte and share a patbingsu with your special someone—or have it all to yourself. Either way, it’s good. HoW to Get tHere:

Gyeongbokgung: Take the subway to Gyeongbokgung Station (Line 3). From there, you can walk to Insadong or take the subway to Anguk Station (Line 3, Exit 6). Star Café Miss Lee is located above a GS25 convenience store near Insadong’s tourist

Holding Hands witH History Get a closer look at the Korean culture with a day at Yongsan-gu’s museums. Here, you can find the National Museum of Korea, a sprawling complex that contains national treasures like a delicate golden crown from the ancient Silla Dynasty, a 10-story stone pagoda, and a bronze incense burner depicting the mythical animals of Korea. Free English tours are scheduled at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., but you can also rent English audio guides whenever you want. History buffs will get chills at the War Memorial of Korea, a free-of-charge museum commemorating Korea’s military history. Looking for calmer diversions? Try ice-skating or ride the carousel, a setting in the Korean romantic drama Stairway to Heaven. The Lotte Department Store also shares a subway station with Lotte World. The busy, high-end district parodied in PSY’s viral music video is a costly place to stay, but a day trip will suit most travelers just fine. The Dream Forest in Beon-dong is the fourth largest park in Seoul, and is home to a stream with seven waterfalls, a moonreflecting pond, and a water playground for kids. The Dream Forest Observatory, one of its main attractions, gives a panoramic view of Seoul and the surrounding mountains. Grab a coffee from its café and just sit there, watching the city lights. The observatory is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m.–10 p.m. FEELING SEOUL’S ‘CENTER’ In Korean, the name Jung-gu literally translates to “central district.” Here, you’ll find a mix of high-rise office buildings and historical spots like Sungnyemun (also known as Namdaemun), one of eight massive, pagoda-style gates preserved from the Joseon Dynasty. Walking distance from Seoul Plaza and the new and futuristic City Hall is Cheonggyecheon. Cheonggyecheon was once a clogged-up creek that was paved over and turned into a highway, but was restored in the mid-2000s and turned into a public park

cutting through the middle of Seoul’s central business district. Many couples and families take strolls here, and buskers occasionally perform along the stream’s banks. Jung-gu has many tourist attractions, the most popular of which is the bustling shopping district of Myeongdong. Here, cosmetic stores compete for your attention, with salesladies offering freebies to anyone who enters their shop. After shopping, fuel up at hole-inthe-wall grills or noodle-and-dumpling house Myeongdong Kyoja, and take a 15-minute walk to the cable cars going up to Namsan and its viewing deck, N Seoul Tower. Still got energy? Myeongdong’s street vendors are open until midnight. How to Get tHere:

Bakeries like Paris Baguette, located near the check-in areas, sell decorated pastries that make great gifts for loved ones back home. Is it possible to feel homesick for a place where you don’t actually live? atmosphere more conducive to spontaneous conversation. I like to attend exhibit openings and gallery events. The visitors are often ready to mingle, and art gives you something you can talk about. If you’re nervous, try speaking first to the artist or the curator—they have to be welcoming at their own event! However, I advise against asking artists to explain their work; rather, ask about the process of creation or talk about how it makes you feel. Another thing that often works for me is approaching a smoker. It’s my theory that smokers are more open to talk to strangers because they’re used to asking for a light and occasionally cadging a cigarette. I don’t smoke myself, but in a place where everyone is unfamiliar, I often look for that person who’s off to one side, having a smoke, to strike a chat with. Whatever you try, the key is to just go out there and do it. You’re a foreigner, so it’s okay if you embarrass yourself—it’s expected. At least you showed interest in getting to know some locals, and that’s a very positive thing. Travel shouldn’t only be about seeing foreign places—it should be about getting to know the people who live there, and helping to make the world a little smaller and a great deal friendlier. n

ne day in Bangkok, I was riding the Skytrain and noticed something a bit unusual. The young woman sitting next to me was clutching a bag that looked like Sally the rag doll, a character in the film The Nightmare Before Christmas. I couldn’t help but remark upon it. That led to a friendly conversation, in which I learned that she was Chinese-Cambodian and was visiting Bangkok to do a whole lot of shopping. It made an otherwise dull metro ride a lot more pleasant. Conversations like those are nectar to the solo traveler. I enjoy traveling on my own because it offers so much flexibility. But the downside is that I don’t have anyone around to talk to. Sadly, the art of impromptu conversation is dying. It was bad enough when people were shutting themselves away with headphones. But before you plug in your ear buds, put yourself out there and connect with someone. Being a traveler gives you the perfect conversation opener. As long as the person speaks English, you can quickly get a conversation flowing. People love to share their expertise on local matters. And it piques their interest to hear that you’re a foreigner. His works are displayed in the ultra luxe resorts of Amanpulo and Shangri-La Boracay, a testament to his artistry and skill. Just wander your eyes around his gallery and you’ll spy one-of-a-kind pieces that marry function and style. Notice how different elements from the earth never depart his style. Most notably, you’ll see how his trademark twigs figure in his works. Bigyan is an accountant by profession, so it’s his analytical eye that lets him create beautiful pieces that are always consistent in style and quality. When you’re done shopping for some of his pieces, you can also try your hand in pottery. It’s definitely a refined way to get your hands dirty. The short classes won’t guarantee that you’ll be a master potter, but at least you’ll realize how much craftsmanship goes into each of his pieces.

His works are much sought after that every year, his fans travel all the way to his place in Quezon to avail of his 50-percent-off birthday promo. This year, it will be held on August 10, so better mark your calendar. Try to be there early to avoid the crowds, as some buyers already do their early Christmas shopping. To complete your experience, have a fill of the gourmet lunch that features a spread of Quezon’s local dishes—all cooked by Bigyan himself. Start off with the Pako salad, a refreshing medley of wild fern, tomatoes, onions, and salted duck egg. Follow it with the kulawo, or smoked banana blossoms stewed in vinegar and coconut milk. More familiar flavors are represented in the grilled spareribs, fish with mango salsa, and shrimp with curry. In between bites, you’ll be cooled off by fresh coconut juice. ooks like a scene from The Matrix, I muse while fighting the notorious Tubbataha Reef current, which is trying its best to peel our fish counting team off a coral-covered wall into open water—where hungry hammerheads lie waiting. Around us, forming a dense cloud of colored confetti above jagged heads of staghorn coral—is a massive, pulsating shoal of Anthias and damselfish. Easily ten-thousand-strong, the colored mass seemingly swims and feeds as one—just like the swarms of squid-like sentinels in The Matrix. The fish are obviously having no trouble with the current. coral, pulverized to grit. I’ve been trying to envision how the scars can heal, but I’m totally stumped. Transformed into graveyards of broken coral and bare rock, the grounding sites hosted only surgeonfish— drab-hued reef residents, easily eclipsed by the reef ’s shinier stars. We wait and fight on as the current gets stronger. THE CRADLE OF LIFE Bursting through the vastness of the Sulu Sea, 160 kilometers southeast of Puerto Princesa in Palawan, are the twin atolls of Tubbataha, spectacular worlds brimming with wealth both beneath and beyond the blue. Formed from the eruption of undersea volcanoes over 15 million years ago, Tubbataha for the Philippines is what the Serengeti is for Africa—an unmatched cradle of life. encompasses both atolls plus nearby Jessie Beazley reef. “Tubbataha earned its moniker from visiting Samal tribesmen—who called it ‘long reef’ after the exposed coral formations revealed daily by the tide,” explains WWF Tubbataha Project Manager Marivel Dygico. “It is accessible via a 12-hour live-aboard cruise from Puerto Princesa City, though strong waves confine recreational diving to the months of April, May, and June.” It is a fish-lover’s wet dream, as over 600 species of fish—ranging from the fingernail-sized pygmy seahorse to the occasional truck-sized whale shark— patrol coral-coated slopes and dramatic drop-offs. Each dive reveals a treasure trove of finned jewels, distinguished by the way they swim. Adorned in gold and amber, butterflyfish strut like beauty queens. Trailing sweetlips follow us with schoolboy curiosity. Ghostly silver batfish swim with creepiness, while grey reef sharks exude pure awesomeness. “The area also hosts 360 species of coral, 14 species of shark, 12 species of whale and dolphin, endangered green sea and hawksbill turtles plus over a hundred seabird species,” adds Dygico. All this biodiversity translates to unrivalled productivity. Whereas a typical square kilometer of healthy coral reef annually yields up to 40 metric tons of seafood yearly, Tubbataha generates over 200. Though fishing within the park is not allowed, the larval dispersal effects continually seed the far reaches of the Sulu Sea with fish and invertebrate spawn. Above the blue yonder peek two tiny land masses spaced eight kilometers apart. North Atoll spans 12,435 sqm and hosts over 200 trees, many shorn and pitted by ravenous red-footed boobies. sea. South Atoll is much smaller, at 3,140 sqm. A meterhigh concrete wall, cracked and pitted by the elements, forms a protective ring against erosion, while a solarpowered lighthouse erected in 1980 by the Philippine Coast Guard stands sentinel over all. Sadly, both atolls bore back-to-back bruises from ship groundings this year. LITTLE DOCTORS Back in South Atoll, drab squads of surgeonfish whiz by as Seconds secures the last transect. Suddenly, the striped fish start to, well … shimmer. Dumbfounded, I soon remember what Tubbataha Park Superintendent Angelique Songco told us before our dive. “When the tide shifts, hot water from the lagoon mixes with cold water from the depths. The effect makes the water glimmer.” Painted in a whole new light by this eerie phenomenon, I realize that these surgeonfish are far more than drab reef denizens. Perpetually pecking and grazing, forever ignored because of their dull colors, these unassuming fish are the secret to Tubbataha’s recovery. After visiting the grounding site of the USS Guardian the day before, Dr. Licuanan explained his theory of reef regeneration. “The key to it all might be surgeonfish. Their constant grazing keeps algae from taking over the freshly exposed rock. It is because of them that coral larvae will be allowed to resettle on the grounding scars.” Named for the scalpel-like extensions by their tails, these valuable reef denizens are—like real-life surgeons— experts at bringing things to life. The fish count done, we begin our ascent, leaving Tubbataha in the hopeful hands of these little doctors. And though lackluster in color, they to me shone brighter than any of the reef ’s other jewels. n www.philippineairlines.com I 53

FOLKTALE

The Legend of The diwaTa MounTains encanto fell in love with her and abducted her. She disappeared one day and was never heard from again. Poor Prince Bantugan was desperate. He did not know where to look for her as there was no trace of the beautiful Doncella. Since he was the favorite young man of the gods from the town of Anggugurang, being the strongest, bravest, and as generous as he was handsome, the god Bikol chose him to be one of his celestial messengers. Bantugan then disappeared and went to live in the Palace of the Gods in heaven. The Bicolanos believe that when they see a shooting star, it is Bantugan giving a sign that he wants to see them. To perpetuate his memory, several places have been named after him: one is the summit of a mountain between Adiagnao, Lagonoy, and Polomoan de Caramoan of the province of Camarines Sur. Another is in Mount Buhi towards Sagnay. n

ADVENTURE

ROAR OF THE RIVER: River rafting in CDO is so popular that the city is nicknamed the White Water Rafting Capital of the Philippines.

Cagayan de OrO’s Wild river ride Get into outdoors adventure mode with ANNA GOLEZ as she tries out some white-water rafting fun.

I

f you want to get wet and wild, look no further than The City of Golden Friendship. Cagayan de Oro’s white-water rafting and river trekking are much talked about for a good reason— you won’t find more thrilling adventures in the Philippines. The mountains and rivers of CDO will dare you to jump into rapids and slide down rock formations, testing your courage and your will to get a little mud on your shorts. White-water rafting is considered an extreme sport, but beginners need not worry for the Cagayan de Oro River has plenty of rapids that will send your adrenaline pumping without giving you heart attack. A 40-minute ride from the city proper takes you to the jump-off point in Barangay Mambuaya. Let Bugsay River Rafting (www.facebook.com/ CDOBugsay) course you through the river with their expertly trained and friendly guides. One boat can accommodate six rafters plus two

guides, who’ll give you a brief orientation on safety and the different forms of paddling before you set off to conquer the rapids. With the basic course, you’ll pass through 40 rapids that will take 2 hours or a little longer if you stop for lunch. The ride is a mixture of calm, scenic paddling, passing by towering cliff formations on one side and rolling hills and forests on the other. You might even spot a local or two fishing by the banks with their makeshift poles. But brace yourself because just around the corner might be another set of wild rapids. The guides will shout out which form of paddling the group needs to do and count to get those oars in unison and…stop! You can haul up your oars once more and let the current carry you down. Halfway through the course, the guides will steer you to land for

a lunch of fresh seafood and grilled pork and chicken under the shade of cashew trees. Don’t expect a long table with fine linen cloth, though. Your boat will take another function as your table! The guides will flip it over, cover it with banana leaves and just plop savory shrimp, fish, meat and juicy pineapple slices. Take your puso (steamed rice wrapped in coconut leaves) in one hand, pluck off a piece of that grilled chicken, dip it in soy sauce with chili and that’s how you do lunch along the Cagayan de Oro River. When you’re done drying off, head to Mapawa Nature Park (www.mapawa.com), a 25,000-hectare forest 30 minutes away from the city and managed by the family of

the late vice president Emmanuel Pelaez. There are 185 tree species in the property, some of which are considered heritage trees, such as a centuries-old White Lauan and a Dao tree estimated to be almost 300 years old. Also, be sure to bring your binoculars as 55 bird species have been spotted in the area. The park has plenty of adventure to offer by rappelling down alongside a 20-meter or so high waterfall, skimming down a natural rockslide into a waterhole, and, of course, a zipline over the thick treetops. From the mountaintop, you can also glimpse the vast pineapple plantations of neighboring Bukidnon. n

Just an hour’s boat ride away from the mainland is the country’s second smallest province, where seven volcanoes lie. Camiguin has great swimming and snorkeling spots, like the White Island sandbar and Mantiuge Island. You can also take a refreshing dip in the Santo Niño Cold Spring or if you dare, relax at the Ardent Hot Spring whose waters are heated by an active volcano.

ukidnon, which means “mountain dweller,” is a beautiful place to visit. A landlocked plateau in north central Mindanao near the city of Cagayan de Oro, much of the province is untouched highland forests, which form an important feature of its indigenous culture. The province is also a great place to find new adventure, or just get away from it all. Traveling to the province from Cagayan de Oro, you’ll pass mountain views and rich greenery. Stop by Manolo Fortich where you can enjoy a relaxing game of golf and sink your teeth in what some say is the best steak in Mindanao, at the pineapple haven, Del Monte Country Club. Afterwards, take a drive 62 I Mabuhay Magazine I August 2013

through their fields of pineapples to view one of the largest pineapple plantations in the Philippines. Next, go to Dahilayan, a place dotted with beautiful pine trees. The weather can get pretty cold and foggy, so bring a sweater or raincoat to keep warm. Here you’ll find yourself in a lush environment of trees and flowers. First stop: the Dahilayan Gardens and Resort. From atop their hills is Zip Zone, the longest dual zipline in Asia, plus the drop-zone, obstacle course, and other thrill rides to get your adrenaline soaring. Continue up the road and you’ll find Saddle Ridge Camp, which has off-road tours around the site and horseback riding. Their steaks are recommended. Lastly and further up, you’ll see Forest Park, a

T

he Philippines’ largest city in terms of land area has fully embraced the legacy of its ethnic diversity while paying respects to the traditional rituals of its ancestors. One of these is a thanksgiving celebration to the spirits who watch over the indigenous domain and over a bountiful harvest. It’s called Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival, and is Mindanao’s biggest and most pulsating celebration. Rejoicing for goodness and harmony in life, locals treat visitors to a month-long run of activities that pay homage to the abundant vegetation of Davao during harvest season. The dazzling spectacle during the street-dancing competition and the floral float parade make this festival one of the most beautiful in the country. It is also the most highly participated by contingents (competing groups)

“The dazzling specTacle during The sTreeT-dancing compeTiTion and The floral floaT parade make This fesTival one of The mosT beauTiful in The counTry.” from neighboring cities and provinces of Mindanao. Most Filipino festivals include a beauty pageant—and the Hiyas ng Kadayawan celebrates each native group’s representative: young women endowed with character, grace, and intelligence. Celebrated every month of August, the actual festival starts on the third week when major roads are closed to give way to street-food stalls, bazaars, and night concerts and musical performances. With a wealth of culture rich in indigenous ceremonies, ethnic attire, musical instruments, cuisine, and authentic rituals, the Kadayawan draws thousands of visitors each year. It’s best to book your plane ticket and hotel room in advance, since many people will surely visit Davao during this season. Visit the City Tourism Office to inquire about

First-time visitors might need to get used to the unusual scent of durian fruit in the air, as it is sold everywhere. The locals are inherently warm, accommodating, and extra helpful. Kadayawan is a celebration of Davao’s multicolored mix of indigenous communities and migrant settlers whose identities make up the rich cultural heritage of this city. Indeed, its natural attractions, variety of fruits, flowers, and friendly locals make it a premier tourist destination. And for many, a peaceful home to live in. n

So Where’s the Party? Matina Town Square in Gen. McArthur Highway (south of the University of Mindanao) has everything from local bands playing in Kanto Bar or Taboan to night bazaars. Damosa in Mamay Road (on the other side of Davao River) also has the same atmosphere with different diners. Sa’less Diner and Moozika are grungy bars for music lovers. Here, new local bands showcase their music to a laidback audience. Upscale Eagle’s Bar in Marco Polo Hotel and Blue Room in Apo View Hotel are great for cooling down with drinks and house music. Bricklane Square is a compound of restaurants. Try the popular Business Class Restaurant. Torres Street is a food street from end to end, with a variety of choices. A SURREAL STACK: Take a closer look at the spines and you might spot a title or two that you have read. Stilkey’s installations are certainly stories upon stories.

New Life for Old Books A 24-foot-high stack of books was L.A.-based artist Mike Stilkey’s choice of canvas for his piece “Discarded Romance,” now a permanent installation at the Bonifacio High Street branch of Fully Booked. Stilkey did not have any formal training and tried his hand at drawing and painting upon observing his friends dabble in street art. He experimented with old book covers as a medium, and, later on, great piles of books, painting on their spines. He admits to choosing these old, forgotten books for the greater nostalgic narratives they tell. With a unique canvas and along Stilkey’s whimsical choice of subjects—tea-drinking horses, bears in top hats, colorful cats—“Discarded Romance” is one piece that certainly breathes new life into these once unwanted books and will appeal to anyone’s imagination. www.mikestilkey.com

PAL And teAm KAbAng to Promote AnimAL weLfAre By Pinky Mag-iba Balagtas

K

abang, a two-year-old “aspin” (“asong Pinoy” or Philippine dog) from Zamboanga, could easily be your average dog. With a light brown coat specked with blacks and whites, she is playful and fiercely loyal to her owner, Rudy Bunggal. It was probably this sense of loyalty and devotion that prompted her to throw herself in harm’s way—in front of an oncoming tricycle—in order to save her master’s daughter and niece, one fateful day in December 2011. For her brave and selfless act, which speaks of the very best qualities of man’s best friend, she has been hailed a hero. Unfortunately, the accident also left her disfigured—without a snout and an upper jaw. But through the kindness and initiative of those who were touched by her extraordinary story, Kabang now has a shot at a normal and healthy life. It was Karen Kengott, a nurse from the United States, who first organized a fundraising, dubbed “Care for Kabang”, after seeing Kabang’s story on the Internet in February 2012. The campaign snowballed with the help of the Animal Welfare Coalition (AWC), an alliance of animal welfare advocates and nongovernment organizations. AWC allied with others who wanted to support Kabang and formed Team Kabang, a group dedicated to providing care for the heroine dog. With the help of Facebook and other social networking sites, Team Kabang met their goal of raising enough funds to make it possible for Kabang to receive the surgery she needed. The campaign touched a lot of people’s hearts and the outpouring of support made her an instant star, attracting coverage from both local and international media outlets. But there was one last hurdle: How to transport Kabang, who required special care, to the University of California Veterinary Teaching Hospital 80 I Mabuhay Magazine I August 2013

in the United States. Michael Foley, owner and president of Global Animal Transport, a Los Angeles-based company specializing in the safe and secure translocation of animals, approached Philippine Airlines through its PAL Foundation. The flag carrier immediately agreed to help, waiving all expenses for transporting Kabang and her two escort veterinarians, Dr. Anton Mari Lim and Dr. Edgardo Unson. The PAL Foundation made sure all special arrangements needed to transport Kabang were in place. They also assisted in preparing all documentary requirements for transporting her. Finally, on October 8, 2012, Kabang flew to Los Angeles onboard PR102. The surgery was a success and Kabang was released from UC Davis’ care on June 3, 2013. The US$27,000 total cost of the treatments and surgery was paid for by donations from 47 different countries. While in California, Kabang also received recognitions from the U. S. Senate, the California State Assembly, City of Woodland, and the American Red Cross. After seven months of treatment, Kabang was finally ready to come home. Accompanied by her veterinarian, Dr. Mari Lim, Kabang arrived in Manila last June 8, to a hero’s welcome. She was flown back to Zamboanga the following day to finally reunite with her family. Today, Kabang is strong and healthy, and no longer requires special medication. She can eat anything, including her favorite pan de sal. Team Kabang, AWC, and PAL, who share the credit for Kabang’s recovery, look forward to continue supporting her in her capacity as an “Ambassador of Dogwill”. Through Kabang, and her extraordinary journey, they hope to inspire others, both here and abroad, to join the cause and promote animal welfare and responsible pet ownership. n

ASIA’S FIRST AIRLINE

Philippine Airlines—Asia’s first airline—is the flag carrier of the Republic of the Philippines and the pioneer airline of the country, with a 72-year history steeped in tradition and modernity. PAL first took to the skies on March 15, 1941, with a small twin-engine Beech Model 18 airplane flying 212 kilometers from Makati, near Manila, to Baguio in the northern Philippines, carrying a full load of five passengers. Upon the outbreak of World War II on December 8, 1941, PAL’s two Beech 18s were pressed into military service, flying missions to evacuate American pilots to Australia. Both were destroyed in battle. Post-war operations resumed on February 14, 1946. On July 31, 1946, a PAL-chartered DC-4 took off from Makati carrying American servicemen home to Oakland, California. The 41-hour journey across the Pacific, with stops in Guam, Wake, Kwajalein and Honolulu, made PAL the first Asian airline to cross the vast ocean. On May 3, 1947, PAL opened a route to Rome and Madrid, later extended to London, becoming the first Southeast Asian airline to fly to Europe. Over the next three decades, its international route network ranged from Asia to Australia, the Middle East, Europe and North America, establishing PAL as one of the world’s leading carriers of that era. PAL keeps in step with advancements in aircraft technology, regularly acquiring the latest aircraft to maintain a young, modern fleet. From DC-3s that served as its workhorse in the 1940s and 1950s, Vicker Viscount turbo-props and Fokker F-27s were added to the fleet in the 1960s. In 1966, BAC 1-11 aircraft introduced pure-jet service in the domestic sector and in 1974, the McDonnell Douglas DC-10— PAL’s first wide-body aircraft—went into service on the trans-Pacific route. It was succeeded as PAL’s flagship in 1979 by the Boeing

747-200, which featured “Skybeds” paired with First Class seats on its upper deck—a first in the industry. Upgrades to the long-range fleet included the Boeing 747-400 in 1993, the Airbus 340-300 in 1997 and the Boeing 777-300ER in 2009. On April 20, 2012, PAL welcomed a strategic investor into the company—San Miguel Corporation, the Philippines’ largest conglomerate, significantly boosting the flag carrier’s immediate and long-term prospects. Recharged, PAL embarked on a bold growth strategy anchored on fleet modernization, network expansion and service innovations. On August 28, 2012, it placed a firm order for 54 new-generation Airbus aircraft comprising 44 short-range A321-200 and 10 long-range A330-300 High Gross Weight jets—the largest single aircraft purchase in Philippine aviation history. The following month, ten more A300-300 HGW aircraft were added to the order. Deliveries commenced in August 2013 and continue until 2019. Complementing the new equipment, PAL has unveiled a brisk network expansion for 2013, covering 11 new destinations across Asia, Australia and the Middle East, plus one domestic point. These are Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Guangzhou, China; Darwin, Brisbane and Perth in Australia; Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates; Doha, Qatar; Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam in Saudi Arabia; and Basco, Batanes in the Philippines. PAL is also planning a return to Europe before the end of 2013, with London, Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Rome and Madrid as probable destinations. In its eighth decade, with a new investor on board and a bold vision to chart its path, Philippine Airlines can look back at a proud legacy of service to the nation and beyond to a future where it will soar once more as a major global network carrier. n

In 19th-century France, Jean Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine's daughter, Cosette. The fateful decision changes their lives forever. A big-screen adaptation of the acclaimed West End musical.

Mud is an adventure about two boys, Ellis and his friend Neckbone, who find a man named Mud hiding out on an island in the Mississippi.

This fantastical adventure imagines the unusual origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz.

PARIS SHINES AT

AZURE

THE

P

aris Hilton is radiant. Her sparkle sets hearts on fire and her shine is true and spectacular, most especially when she is by the shore. It is at the beach where she finds her balance, her sanctuary, her release – whether taking a dip in the cool waters, lounging on powdery white sand, sipping afternoon cocktails, bronzing her lovely skin, or grooving to the beats at the beachside bar. Century Properties brings all that Paris loves about the world’s best beaches to the Azure: the country’s first and only masterplanned urban residential community with a man-made beach and the exciting Paris Beach Club. Paris sure knows how to light it up – and now so can you! For a home in paradise right in the heart of the city, look no further than the Azure. Because as Paris knows, there’s nothing else like it in the world.

azure.com.ph THE AZURE is located on SLEX (West Service Road) between the Bicutan and Sucat Exits, directly adjacent to SM Bicutan – about a 15 minute drive to Alabang in the south, and 10 minutes to Makati in the north via the expanded skyway.

Azure Urban Resort Residences is being developed by Century Limitless Corporation, a member of the Century Properties Group. The design of the beach club by Paris Hilton does not in any way change the name of the project. In no way is Azure or Century related to Hilton Hotels Worldwide.
