TO EAT OR NOT TO EAT (May 2013)

Nature is indeed fascinating. Going against its instinct of preying on smaller fish, this whitetip reef shark swims beside a yellow pilot fish. Photographer Jun Lao shares that some small fish species, like this yellow pilot fish, benefit from a symbiotic relationship with whitetip reef sharks as it uses them for warding off bigger predators. During this dive in Gato Island, Cebu, Lao also witnessed how the shark luckily escaped a fishing line. There are over 100 million sharks killed yearly for their fins. www.paparazsea.com
