Wilson’s great-great-grandfather, Robert E. Lee Wilson, founded the city of Wilson in Mississippi County and in 1885 also founded Lee Wilson & Co., which operated a farm, a railroad company, and other business interests.
Arkansas Business reported in its “40 Under 40” profile: “In late 2010, the family sold Lee Wilson & Co., and Perry Wilson has been able to refocus on building his business and corporate law practice in Little Rock, where he has managed a great deal of complex business litigation as well as multimillion-dollar transactions.” Chairman Wilson grew up in the small town named for his family. “Growing up in Wilson was great,” he said. “My Mom will tell you that I spent sunup to sundown outside while growing up. I discovered at an early age that I love the outdoors. Living in Wilson was definitely good for that.” Wilson went to a small Presbyterian school in Osceola through the 6th grade. “After that I went to Aiken Prep School in Aiken, South Carolina, for 7th and 8th grade, and then to Woodberry Forest in Orange, Virginia, for 9th grade. At that point, I had my fill of boarding school, and I went to Memphis University School in Memphis for 10th through 12th grade.” He received his B.A. degree from Southern Methodist University and his law degree from the Bowen School of Law at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. “Batesville is one of Arkansas’ hidden gems, and Lyon College is a wonderful place academically and socially,” Wilson said. “I feel confident that once a prospective student visits Lyon and learns what Lyon and the surrounding area have to offer, they’ll never want to leave. One of our biggest challenges is getting the chance to make that lasting first impression. However, President Weatherman and his staff at Lyon are making a difference in getting the word out around the country and in getting folks on campus.” Wilson believes Lyon has several strengths to build on. “Lyon College is unique in the high-quality academic program it offers with a very low stuFall 2012

dent-to-teacher ratio that allows students to really spend time with their professors and get the most out of their education. Additionally, it is my feeling that Lyon, of all of the colleges and universities in the state of Arkansas, best embraces and utilizes the natural resources that the ‘Natural State’ has to offer. Lyon’s outdoors program is a perfect example of this.” What does the new chairman hope to accomplish in the next five years? “The Board of Trustees is definitely going through a transition process,” Wilson said. “I believe that this fact, my age, and the folks my age that I interact with around Arkansas are some of the main reasons that I was asked to chair the Board. Along with increasing enrollment and increasing the profile of Lyon College throughout the U.S., one of my main goals is to assist the current Board of Trustees in assembling the next generation of trustees who will take Lyon College to the next level.” The new board chairman’s hobbies include hunting, woodworking, golf, and playing musical instruments. “I started playing the drums when I was around 12,” he said. “I got in my first band when I was 13. Since everyone comes to the drummer’s house for practice, there were always lots of other instruments lying around my room, and I decided to learn how to play all of them. I now play drums, guitar, bass, and piano. I want to learn the banjo next. No lessons on any of these; I play by ear. “My band started writing all of its own songs when we were in the 10th grade (it was classified as “alternative” when that meant something), and we were offered a real-deal record contract when we were in the 12th grade. Instead of taking the deal, we all went to different colleges. Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if we’d signed.” Asked for a final comment, Wilson said, “I just want to re-emphasize how much of an honor for me it is to chair the Board of Trustees. I look forward to watching Lyon College grow and prosper over the next five years and for many years to come.” 7
