WHAT THE STUDENTS SAY… Here’s what Lyon College students have to say about the new Edwards Commons: NORAH GNADE, SENIOR “It’s been a long time since students could all sit comfortably and enjoy eating in an actual cafeteria. All the windows are great and make the cafeteria feel really bright and open. I love that we have a terrace once again to sit out and enjoy the nice weather. I’m just grateful the seniors were able to enjoy the new building before graduating! It’s been difficult not having Eds as a common gathering place. I’m looking forward to hanging out in the new bistro like I did at the old Lyon Den.”

October 2010. The building had been a centerpiece of the Lyon College community since the late 1970s, with the dining hall portion completed in 1983. Edwards Commons was named for the late John W. and Lucille Welman Edwards of Batesville. Mr. Edwards was a former trustee and a banker who had given the largest gift for the dining hall project and the largest gift to the College ever made by a Batesville resident. “I believe the Board of Trustee’s decision to keep the Edwards name on the campus center is very fitting,” President Weatherman said. “John Edwards and his family were very strong supporters of the College, and I am pleased their name will still be featured on this prominent building on campus.” The project cost just under $10 million. Funding for the new student center came from insurance proceeds from the fire and from donations. The remodeled building that was used as a temporary dining facility, The Temp, will once again house the Scottish heritage program and a fine arts studio. A portion of the building may be used for special events and as a meeting space. Fall 2012

HANNAH ELLIS, SENIOR “I am so excited about the new and improved Eds! The building is beautiful and a great addition to campus. The new programming rooms were very much needed, and I could not be more excited about having a Lyon Den again. (That was probably what I missed the most.) Kappa Sigma’s game room is fantastic as well. I am thrilled that I get to enjoy a year of this new building before I graduate. I was worried, after Eds burned down, that I would never get the luxury of having a cafe again.” JONATHAN DANNATT, JUNIOR “The new building is awesome! The cafeteria provides the space for comfortable seating, and although the line may be a little bit slower, it is definitely worth the wait, because the quality of food has increased dramatically. The game room is great for both reading and homework, as well as hanging with friends and relaxing after a long day of classes. I am excited for the bistro to open for late night snacks. The new Eds is a great addition to this campus. The time we had to spend in the ‘gymeteria’ and the Temp has finally paid off!” MOLLY YOUNG, JUNIOR “I really love the design, especially the windows, and I’m really excited for the opening of the bistro. I’m . . . concerned about the garbage disposal system. Otherwise, I think the new Eds has all the space our growing campus needs, and I can’t wait to see what opportunities will open up with its completion.” See floor plans of Edwards Commons on Pages 16-19. 3
