Major jobs and investment boost announced at launch of Irish fleet solutions company Investment of €1.3 million at E-drive Group to create up to 40 new jobs

2

A leading driver safety and fleet solutions provider in Ireland and the UK, E-drive Solutions, today announced a merger with Universal Graphics, a specialist branding company, in a move that will create up to 40 new jobs over the next two years. The newly merged companies will now be known as E-drive Group and already the company employs 62 people in its offices in Waterford, Monaghan and London. A recruitment drive has started in order to fill the additional 40 new jobs Pictured l/r: Simon Murray, Sales and Marketing which include full-time engineering positions for EDirector and Mervyn O’Callaghan, MD at the launch drive Group’s Ireland and UK operations, as well of new Irish fleet solutions company, E-drive Group. as full-time customer service, creative marketing, graphic design, and back-office support roles. Commenting on the launch of E-drive Group, Mervyn O’Callaghan, CEO said: “Combining our driver safety and vehicle technology expertise at E-drive Solutions with the award-winning expertise of the branding specialists at Universal Graphics made perfect business sense. Our individual teams were delivering and servicing the same cohort of clients so combining our services into a ‘one-stop shop’ solution offers unrivalled cost and resource efficiencies, which is exactly what our clients want.” Already, E-drive Group has invested €1.3 million in world-class specialist equipment and IT systems. It has grown its employee base by a third and heavily invested in training across its UK and Irish operations. E-drive Group is also the only Irish-based company to have attained the 3M MCS warranty partner status, which testifies to its quality of service and delivery. The company is also a patron of FITAS, the accreditation scheme for setting industry standards for the installation of electrical communications equipment into vehicles. O’Callaghan explained: “This is an exciting time for the new company. Given our core strengths and customer focus, we are in a unique position to deliver an unrivalled service to our clients through our considerable expertise and accreditation.” As part of its business plan, E-drive Group will look to double its turnover to €10 million by 2016. A rapid expansion plan is already underway in the UK and mainland Europe, with 20 additional staff recruited in the past six months to service growing demand. While the company specialises in commercial fleet management services, E-drive Group expects major growth opportunities to come from providing ‘black box’ telematics and driver safety technology to both fleets and the insurance industry – something that is currently being rolled out by the major motor insurers in the UK as a means of reducing driver premiums. Referring to the company’s growth strategy, O’Callaghan said: “The new corporate buyer realises that quality must not only be aligned with price but also compliance with corporate responsibility and increased legislation. Our investment in the latest technologies and equipment leaves us uniquely positioned as the only accredited company to effectively deliver nationwide solutions of exceptional quality across the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe. By managing the process from start to finish, we are in complete control of the quality and level of service our clients receive. “We will also be launching a number of unique solutions focused on driver safety and insurance cost reduction in the coming months that we believe will transform both fleet safety and insurance costs,” O’Callaghan concludes. E-drive Group had its first official outing showcasing its unique fleet offering at the Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham recently, promoting its range of driver safety and camera technology solutions along with its fleet branding offering. The show generated significant interest around E-drive Group’s anti-collision warning system – a technology that provides a visual and audio alert for drivers of potential dangerous situations or a potential accident. E-drive Group is co-founded by technology expert Mervyn O’Callaghan and award-winning branding and design expert Simon Murray. Together, O’Callaghan and Murray offer a combined 25 years of expert consultancy and global experience. E-drive Group’s existing clients already include some of the largest brands, fleet operators, insurance companies, motor manufacturers and technology partners. IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Port of Cork sees increase in trade traffic in 2012 End of Year Statement from Brendan Keating, Chief Executive of the Port of Cork Company The Port of Cork Company today announced end of year trade traffic results for 2012, showing a total of 9.05 million tonnes. This is an increase of 2% compared to 2011 figures and it is the first time traffic figures in the Port have surpassed 9 million tonnes since 2008. 2012 was a very challenging year across many sectors including the Irish port sector with the import of goods through Irish ports reported to have fallen by up to 11%. However, the Port of Cork container volumes has shown an increase of 6% with over 165,000 TEU handled during 2012 and imports, excluding oil, are up by 12%. Imports of animal feed stuffs increased by 58% compared to 2011 while fertiliser, cereals and other trades have shown a marginal decrease in 2012. Oil traffic remained steady despite the lower levels of domestic economic activity; however exports of refined product from Phillips 66 Whitegate Oil Refinery were strong and continue to be a significant part of the Port of Cork business. Exports are a key driver in the successful recovery of the Irish Economy and the Port of Cork is committed to continuous support in the growth of international trade for the country’s economic prospects and job creation. Remarking on the end of year trade traffic results, Mr Brendan Keating, Chief Executive of the Port of Cork said: “The Port of Cork is pleased to announce that our total trade traffic in 2012 remained strong and overall we are starting to see some stabilisation in trade levels in and out of the Port. With 98% of volume of all goods imported or exported from Ireland moved by ship, the importance of ports to our economy is of vital strategic importance. We will continue to look to the sectors that are performing strongly, such as food exports and will seek to capitalise on the demand for such goods from Europe and emerging markets.” He continued: “The Port of Cork is a key link to the continued economic success of Ireland and in particular the entire Munster region. The challenge now facing us in 2013 is to continue to develop the Port in order to meet the needs of the Country as it emerges from this current recession. We will continue to be extremely active in the emerging trends and logistic supply changes to reinforce our existing strength as the primary deepwater port in the south of Ireland and build on our progress to date”. Port officials are pro-actively engaged with tourism interests, County and City Councils and destination attractions to enhance the product on offer to the visiting cruise lines with a view to growing the business further through its dedicated cruise terminal. 57 cruise vessels visited the Port of Cork during 2012 bringing almost 100,000 passengers and crew to the region and the Port is scheduled to accommodate 64 vessels in 2013. The Port of Cork was awarded two Cruise Insight Awards for ‘Best Shore Side Welcome’ and ‘Best Tour Guides’ which were announced at the global shipping conference, Seatrade Miami in April 2012. This achievement highlighted the outstanding team effort and commitment by the Port of Cork to deliver an excellent service to the visiting cruise lines and their passengers when in Cork. The Port is delighted to be supporting The Gathering for 2013 and is actively ensuring that all visitors who transit through our facilities receive a warm welcome to Irish shores. Brittany Ferries remained steady on its weekly ferry service from Cork to Roscoff and the Port remains fully committed to establishing new routes and services from Cork. The Port of Cork’s recreational strategy continues to expand with the aim of improving the marine leisure facilities around Cork Harbour.

Sign Up or get Inked!

Mitsubishi Motors and Dublin Ink have come together to raise much needed funds for children’s charity, To Russia with Love….but with a twist! By signing up to donate as little as €4 via the Mitsubishi Motors Ireland Facebook page, supporters will have a chance to leave a personal message for the charity. All the messages will then be taken by Dublin Ink and turned into one large message of support, which in turn will feature on a new Mitsubishi Space Star. The Space Star will then tour the Country, literally driving awareness of To Russia with Love and the tireless work they do. And for those who want to do more and really make a mark of support, Dublin Ink has designed the commemorative “Hope” tattoo. And on Saturday 8th June at the Dublin Ink Studio in Temple Bar, Dublin, 150 candidates will get inked for a great cause. Commenting on the unique fundraising event, Robert Montgomery of Mitsubishi Motors Ireland said: “We really wanted to do something different in supporting To Russia with Love. The chance for people to see their message of support come to life through the new Space Star or when they look in the mirror will hopefully resonate with them. We’re also giving everyone who gets involved the chance to win the use of a new Space Star for six months. That and the chance to support a wonderful cause I’m sure will get people excited about this event. I!”

Clock ticking on Euro 5 Vehicles

The clock is ticking for heavy and light commercial vehicles owners who may be planning to replace fleet before the end of the year when Euro 5 vehicles will no longer be sold. According to one leading manufacturer – MercedesBenz commercial vehicles sales manager, Fergus Conheady – from next year, the emphasis will switch to Euro 6 models with their more environmentally friendly power units. With regard to the run-out period for existing units, Mr. Conheady said that demand for Euro 5 units is extremely strong across Europe. ‘Even the biggest truck manufacturing plant in the world does have limits on the number of units it can produce! The final order date for Euro 5 is fast approaching and customers wishing to purchase the last of these vehicles should be placing their orders in the very near future’ he said. Road upgrades to create over 1,000 jobs

Over 1,000 construction jobs will be created in the next two years as part of a major upgrade of the N11 and N7 road networks. BAM Contractors recently signed a public-private partnership contract worth €282m with the National Roads Authority on behalf of the Department of Transport. The project will see BAM design and build a new freeflow junction at Newlands Cross on the N7 and carry out several works on the N11. As part of the deal signed, they will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the road sections for 25 years. The new junction at Newlands Cross will enable motorists to drive from the south to the north of the country without hitting any traffic lights. The works on the N11 include the construction of a 16km dual carriageway linking the end of the Arklow bypass with the end of the Ashford bypass, as well as two new interchanges at the Beehive junction and at Jack White's crossroads. A service area will also be built at Ballyellin on the Gorey bypass. Construction on the projects is expected to begin very soon. The N11 works will be completed within 28 months and it is planned that the new section of the N7 will be completed within 21 months. IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

‘Two in one’ trailers for Mallinson Transport Krone’s high-cubers set to reduce miles and save fuel

Ken Mallinson & Son UK have added 30 curtainsiders to their fleet

Ken Mallinson & Sons Ltd, the UK and international distribution specialists, have added thirty high volume curtainsiders to their fleet which, says the company, enable them to virtually double utilisation, reduce load miles and save on fuel. With depots in Barnsley, the West Midlands and Fife, Mallinson’s diverse fleet of 60 vehicles and 180 trailers is mainly deployed in the construction, retail and environmental sectors. The operation is nationwide and supported by over 30,000 sq ft of strategically located ambient warehousing. The new Profi Liner curtainsiders from Krone Trailers UK will take high cube or low cube cargo: the sliding roof enables crane loading through the top and is adjustable in height to suit the load. “They run at 4.562m” says Ian Egan, Mallinson’s Business Development Manager, “Which is 23.8cm less than the standard 4.8m trailers used for the same high cube work, but still allows 3.1m side loading access. We can take concrete product in one direction for crane offload and high volume palletised goods in the

other which effectively gives us two trailers in one. Additionally, says Ian Egan, because of the trailer’s low ride height, Mallinson expect to see a reduction in aerodynamic drag of up to 5%, which in turn should see a fuel saving of 2% - 4.2% depending on the roof height. Mallinson’s general haulage service spans the European market and is therefore geared to comply with the latest compliance regulations. “Safety is a key consideration for us” continues Ian “and these trailers come with EN 12642 code XL certification. This not only ensures that the trailers are built to the highest loading and structural standards but it also means we are able to do business which is not always possible without it.” The Profi Liners also feature automatic lift axles for tyre saving and drag reduction, plus automatic safety braking to assist during vehicle coupling. “We are a forward thinking company with a European influence comments Egan.”

BMW named as Ireland’s most reputable company

-Automotive sector replaces Food Manufacturing sector as Ireland’s most trusted industry-

BMW has been named the most reputable organisation in Ireland. Corporate Reputations announced the results of their annual Ireland RepTrak 2013 study, at an event held recently in Dublin. This is the fourth year of the most comprehensive study of corporate reputations undertaken in Ireland, carried out by Corporate Reputations and their global partners the Reputation Institute. The study measured the reputations of 100 firms in Ireland between January and February 2013, based on more than 14,000 consumer ratings from members of the general public. In-depth reports and analysis on the reputation of every organisation included in the study are available from Corporate Reputations. See Pictured are Niamh Boyle, Managing Director, Corporate Reputations with www.corporatereputations.ie for information. Michael Nugent, Director, Sales & Marketing, BMW Ireland at BMW Group Eamon Gilmore, T.D., Tánaiste and Minister for Ireland. BMW has been named the most reputable organisation in Ireland, according to the results of the annual Ireland RepTrak™ 2013 study, announced Foreign Affairs & Trade, presented the awards to by Corporate Reputations recently. The study measured the reputations of 100 the best performing companies, saying, “Ireland’s firms in Ireland between January and February 2013, based on more than 14,000 consumer ratings from members of the general public. international reputation has improved dramatically over the past two years. Part of that is attributable to the calibre of the work being done here both by indigenous and multinational companies, including those highlighted in this study. We are getting the message out worldwide that Ireland is a place where great businesses do great business. This study, which recognises some of those companies and the importance of their innovation and responsible leadership, is very welcome.” BMW ranked first among the firms studied, with Apple (2nd), Google (3rd), Volkswagen (4th) and Toyota (5th) all following in the top five. The independent study ranked how highly organisations are held in esteem, how much they are admired and trusted, and how good the general public feels about them. It also studied how an organisation was rated across the key dimensions of reputation, which are leadership, innovation, governance, workplace, performance, citizenship and innovation. BMW was also recently named as the world’s most reputable company in the Global RepTrak™ 100 study, the world’s largest study of corporate reputations undertaken by Reputation Institute. Speaking at the event, Niamh Boyle, Managing Director, Corporate Reputations, said, “The best companies in Ireland don’t leave their reputation to chance. They ensure that reputation management is an integral part of their business strategy and they work systematically with their stakeholders and customers to ensure that reputation decision-making remains to the forefront. Because of this, these companies are seeing the business benefits that reputation can bring.” “Companies recognise the value of a strong reputation, but they are facing new challenges that a majority are not prepared to meet. Their number one challenge is the lack of a structured process for integrating reputation-based decision-making into their business planning. This is limiting their ability to drive customer loyalty, increase sales, and capture market share.” Michael Nugent, Director, Sales & Marketing, BMW Ireland at BMW Group Ireland, said, “BMW Group Ireland is delighted to be recognised by the RepTrak™ 2013 study as the company with the best corporate reputation in Ireland. This endorses the long term investment by us in the Irish market. BMW’s reputation is built upon our excellent products and services enjoyed by an estimated 100,000 drivers in Ireland. The public face of our brand is our dealer network and their team of over 350 employees. Being in first place in the RepTrak survey is a great endorsement of their efforts. BMW’s success is based on impressive financial performance, innovative products and sound sustainability and environmental credentials. All of these factors contribute to BMW’s reputation and we are very honoured to see our efforts at home and abroad reflected in this award.” Concluded Ms Boyle, “The Ireland RepTrak™ 2013 results show that having a strong reputation leads to supportive consumer behaviours, such as increased customer loyalty, increased sales, capturing market share and giving the company the benefit of the doubt in a crisis. For example, 61% of the general public are positive about buying products from the 10 most reputable companies, compared to just 20% for the 10 least reputable. Given that businesses of every size in Ireland are facing stiffer competition, no organisation can afford to ignore the value of a strong reputation.”

British PM wanted to be a trucker

British Prime Minister David Cameron says he wanted to be a lorry driver. The Eton- and Oxford-educated PM said in a recent interview that his childhood dream was to get behind the wheel of a HGV and hit the open countryside. Cameron was being interviewed by Tesco Magazine, when he was asked what he had wanted to do when he was a boy. “I have always loved the countryside and I once thought I wanted to be a lorry driver. I definitely didn’t have a burning ambition to be the Prime Minister,” he said. Driving a big truck appeals to the child in us all. Ultimately, however, he opted for a lesschallenging career!

Mercedes-Benz claims ‘World First’ for new Sprinter Van

New Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van

The new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van – which arrives here next Autumn – is the first to meet future Euro VI emissions standards in all its engine variants, according to the German manufacturer. Long regarded as the workhorse of the Mercedes-Benz light commercial vehicles fleet, the new Sprinter will arrive here enhanced by a substantial number of external and internal design changes. Outside, its most striking features include a new front end appearance set off by a new, more prominent radiator grille and angular headlights. Redesigned double-segment taillights are the most prominent rear end feature. Inside, notable improvements include new upholstery, a thicker steering wheel, redesigned gear lever and a new-generation radio system with state-of-the-art electronic entertainment features, Bluetooth and navigation system. Despite meeting strict Euro VI emissions standards, the performance of the Sprinter’s diesel engines will remain unchanged, with four and six-cylinder units producing outputs ranging from 95 to 190 bhp. As an alternative to its diesel engines, it will be available also with a Euro VI supercharged 1.8-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine as well as a natural gas powered variant for those who require it, both producing 156bhp. Power is transmitted either by the ECO-Gear 6-speed manual transmission or by 7G-TRONIC PLUS seven-speed automatic transmission with lock-up clutch – another world first for vans. It comes fitted with five new safety assistance features designed to prevent accidents from occurring. Safety wise, it has three features that are world premiered in this category of vehicle. They are Crosswind Assist to help keep the van safely on course when winds are gusting strongly; Collision Prevention Assist which sounds an alert should the vehicle come too close to other moving traffic ahead and Blind Spot Assist which alerts the driver to the presence of other vehicles when changing into an adjoining lane. New also is Lane Keeping Assist which warns the driver when changing lane unintentionally and High Beam Assist which provides optimal illumination of the road ahead. Commenting, their commercial vehicles sales manager in Ireland, Fergus Conheady said that the new Sprinter will be safer, greener, more attractive and a record breaker in its sector in terms of fuel economy with consumption of 6.3-litres per 100km. Other features include five new safety systems and an extended maintenance interval of up to 60,000km.

Crazy insurance claims revealed Drivers' poor grasp of Highway Code leading to accidents

Road users putting on make-up, changing CDs and arguing with their passengers have all contributed to traffic accidents, according to recent insurance claims. According to one of the UK's top insurance comparison websites, one driver was involved in an accident after claiming they saw an unnamed celebrity walking along the street. The "celebrity" turned out to be a normal member of the public. Despite the humorous nature of these claims, many of these accidents betray a shocking ignorance of the Highway Code and basic driving skills, which only go to force up insurance premiums for other drivers. "We never cease to be amazed by some claims," said Paul Gilbert customer services director of InsureAnts.co.uk price comparison website, "It's almost as if some people pass their driving test and immediately forget the basic rules of the road." Ten of our favourite claims included: "I was changing a CD and I didn't notice the bend in the road. I ended up sideways in a field, and walked out through the hole where the windscreen was, listening to Led Zep" "I thought I saw somebody famous walking down the pavement, and took my eye off the road, causing the crash. [Mr Not A Celebrity] saw the accident and kindly agreed to be a witness." "The other driver said he was too busy looking at the map to notice that he had gone the wrong way on a one-way street." "I was trying to swat a fly with the ice scraper and didn't see the other car." "The other driver said they had just driven off the ferry after a week in France, and forgot to drive on the left." "I saw somebody getting undressed in their front window, and crashed through their wall." "We were driving up to the traffic lights just as they turned red, and pressed the accelerator instead of the brake pedal" "I saw a police car, panicked, and drove on the pavement by mistake." "I was driving along a country road and the pollen from a nearby field made me sneeze and I ended up in a ditch." "The other driver was too busy putting on their make-up to see me coming the other way." And our absolute favourite: "I was practising what I'd do in the event of a car crash, and crashed." InsureAnts.co.uk spokesperson Paul Gilbert said: "These may sound far-fetched, but they just go to show how little grip of the Highway Code some drivers possess. "With so much going on both in and out of cars, it's no wonder some drivers are so easily distracted. It's a shame, because these poor skills end up costing other drivers more through increased insurance premiums."

The Ford Fiesta Van and Ford Ranger have been named Category Winners of the Continental Irish Van of the Year 2013 title by the Irish Motoring Writers Association (IMWA) Van Jury. All nine voting members of the IMWA Van Jury took part in the vote. In deciding on these category winners, the jury members took into account such attributes as load (Pictured l to r): Michael Moroney, Irish Motoring Writers Association (IMWA) Member and Chairman of the Irish Van of the Year jury; capacity, reliability, overall versatility, cost of ownership Donella Casey, Ford Ireland; John Morgan, Continental Tyres and drive comfort. Ireland; and Gerry Murphy, IMWA Chairman Presenting the awards to Donella Casey, Fleet, Supply and Distribution Manager of Ford Ireland; John Morgan, Continental Tyres Ireland Business Development Manager, commented: “Congratulations to Ford on scooping both category awards! In today’s tough commercial vehicle market, I am sure that the endorsement of the Irish Motoring Writers Association and these Continental Irish Van of the Year Category Awards will be a huge boost for both the Fiesta Van and Ranger.” Michael Moroney, Chairman of the IMWA van jury, said: “The Continental Irish van category awards are of particular interest to Irish van / commercial drivers and fleet managers, as they highlight the niche models best suited to the particular requirements of the Irish market”. The Commercial SUV and Car Derived Van of the Year titles are category awards under the umbrella of the Continental Irish Van of the Year. The overall Continental Irish Van of the Year award for 2013 was won by the Ford Transit Custom.

Tracs welcomes All Ireland Tyre Survey and makes recommendations

TRACS has welcomed the first ‘All Ireland Tyre Survey’. The survey has just been jointly published by the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government (DECLG), in conjunction with the Department of Environment Northern Ireland (DOE). Retailers, collectors, recyclers and Authorised Treatment Facilities for End of Life Vehicles were included in the data collection process. Information provided by TRACS was instrumental in facilitating the survey. The survey was commissioned to provide improved information on the quantity of used tyres disposed of on the island of Ireland and in particular, to identify how these used tyres are being managed by contractors. The survey will also provide regulators on both sides of the border with information to help inform policy development. This will support and provide a level playing field for businesses as well as driving environmental improvements. TRACS provided the survey with information on collected used tyres and their management during 2011. This data was based on information provided by permitted waste collectors registered with TRACS. These waste collectors account for 9 in every 10 tyres collected in the RoI. However, while TRACS welcomes the report, it also has concerns regarding the methodology of the report and the basic assumptions on the weight of waste tyres. Fiacra Quinn, TRACS, commented “We think perhaps that the basic weights of an individual waste tyre are overstated and this differs from industry information provided. This difference may lead to incorrect determinations throughout the report. Additionally we would not agree with the conclusions on data collection, reporting, and management. In reality, the data here is compiled from one source, and that is TRACS. A recommendation for a ‘centralised electronic system’ ignores the fact that such a system has already been built by TRACS and has operated successfully for over 5 years.” The report goes on to conclude: With the current framework, it could be questioned if the compliance schemes have the competencies and power to access the relevant data from waste operators enabling them to compile used tyre statistics. This is in contrast with the packaging and WEEE / batteries compliance schemes which have incentives for the waste operators to provide information to ensure payment of subsidies for packaging waste recovered or fees for service provided for WEEE / batteries. According to TRACS, this reveals a fundamental flaw in the report. TRACS is currently a free-market scheme. It is not a full Producer Responsibility Initiative (PRI) like any other schemes mentioned and, does not have any physical control over the waste. Therefore, to compare, or even contrast, it with WEEE or packaging is not valid at this time. Fiacra Quinn, director of TRACS, commented “We welcome this survey as a first in its attempt to set out a clear picture of the tyre industry on the island of Ireland. TRACS is in favour of an all Ireland approach and would strongly recommend a co-ordinated cross border approach to future development plans and policies.” A copy of the survey can be obtained from www.environ.ie

New report says ‘London 2012 effect’ could increase road safety and benefit environment

A package of measures put in place by the logistics sector for the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games could, if adopted permanently, improve safety levels for cyclists and other vulnerable users, as well as bring environmental benefits. They include: More night-time deliveries

▪ Consolidation of loads onto fewer vehicles, and; ▪ Much improved levels of communications between local authorities, operators, customers and employees Those are the findings of a major new in-depth analysis of the performance of the logistics sector during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Maintaining Momentum: Summer 2012 Logistics Legacy Report has established that the planned programme of measures for road deliveries adopted during the London Games last year generated positive outcomes that, if adopted permanently, could improve road safety for cyclists and deliver a ‘hat-trick’ of environmental benefits in London, and anywhere else that adopts them. These are: ▪ Fewer CO2 emissions ▪ Less traffic congestion ▪ Reduced fuel consumption

The Report highlights Transport for London data showing that the number of lorries over 3.5t in the morning traffic peak (08.30 hrs) during the Games fell almost 15% compared to a summer’s day in 2011. Smarter working achieved an overall reduction in the number of freight vehicles during the Games period, achieved by making more deliveries during the evening and overnight. Coordinated and innovative approaches meant fewer kerbside deliveries by day, thereby improving the safety of cyclists for whom such vehicles can be an added safety hazard. It also led to a reduction in fuel consumption of between 3% and 6% and reductions in lorry/van driver hours of up to 20%. Fewer goods vehicles on the road by day also indirectly benefitted bus services that were able to move more freely. With goods vehicles accounting for a sixth of the total distance travelled on London’s roads and over 50% of all cyclist fatalities resulting from collisions with Large Goods Vehicles (LGVs), the “Maintaining Momentum: Summer 2012 Logistics Legacy” Report published today also says that improved communications between local authorities, event managers, logistics operators and customers were a leading feature of the smooth operation of the London Games. Undertaken by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) in association with DHL and University of Westminster, the 52 page Report shows that haulage and supply companies worked hard with transport authorities to put in place measures to manage deliveries beyond the working day. It shows that these methods and behaviours brought positive benefits for all road users, including cyclists, and recommends that the levels of engagement achieved by key stakeholders to achieve these benefits should be maintained in the future. CILT President, and DHL Supply Chain CEO Europe, Graham Inglis says: “"The lessons learnt by the logistics industry and highlighted in this report, including the beneficial effects of alternative urban solutions and the collaborative effort of the whole industry, have the power to change the future of logistics across the UK.” IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

01-2950218| 087-7761726 CILT Chief Executive, Steve Agg, said: “For freight and passenger transport, the London Games proved a major success. Goods and services were retained at highly efficient levels, and people were able to move London’s streets more quickly and easily. We must now take advantage of this ‘London 2012 effect’ and put some of the lessons learned into practice on a permanent basis for the sake of all road users, especially for cyclists and pedestrians, to make the capital city a more pleasant place to live and work.” He added: “Freight delivery and logistics operations were made more efficient in London but these methods and approaches could easily be adopted by other cities in the UK, especially those undertaking similar events such as the 2014 Commonwealth Games.” The report concluded that the success of out-of-hours deliveries during the Games, coupled with the Quiet Delivery Code of Practice established during the run-up period, demonstrated that night-time deliveries can be made efficiently and without inconvenience to residents or businesses whilst achieving reduced fuel consumption, less emissions and safer operations. In order to exploit these benefits in the future, the report says that regulatory reform of London Lorry Control Scheme is needed, in order to make night deliveries easier. In return operators could be obliged to adhere to a code of conduct specifying low emission grade engines. The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), in collaboration with DHL and the University of Westminster, produced Maintaining Momentum: Summer 2012 Logistics Legacy. K C A B S ’ FULL OF THE PIPE IT

Following the success of last year's Full of the Pipe truck show at Cavan Equestrian Centre, this year's event goes ahead at the same location. Once again, the June Bank Holiday weekend will see hundreds on trucks converge on Cavan town. Event organisers Kevin Mulqueen and Colin Hegarty have been delighted with the response that they have received since last year's show and already the 2013 event is set to host more trucks than in previous years. Kevin admitted that there has been a few tweaks made to this year's Full of the Pipe and he shares these with us for this month's edition of Irish Trucker, and we are one of the sponsors of Ireland's biggest truck show.

22

“We have made a few changes to the show and I suppose each year that we host Full of the Pipe, we are learning and for this year, we will have a new judging system in place that will see more categories opened up. There will be categories for standard fleet trucks, half customised and full customised trucks, so it allows each individual truck to compete in their own category. It means that there is fairer competition,” said Kevin. “We were delighted with the response and feedback we got from last year's show. Having it indoors made a huge difference and allowed people to browse around at their ease without the worry of it raining or anything like that. “This year, we are hoping

to increase the amount of trucks that compete and we hope to have over 300 trucks, while we are also looking for more businesses and traders to get involved. This is the prime location for anyone involved in the haulage industry to present their wares and we would urge them to come in force.”

Kevin revealed that unlike last year, this year's show would cater solely for trucks and that there would be no cars on show in June. “We have decided not to have the cars on show this year as we feel that the trucks can carry the show on their own. However, we have introduced more amusements for the kids, so it is still very much

THE PLACE TO BE AGAIN

Twenty-twelve was a landmark year for Full of the Pipe as the event was hosted at Cavan Equestrian, Horse Marketing & Event Centre for the first time. It proved to be a resounding success and, unsurprisingly, the trucking extravaganza is returning to the well-appointed County Cavan venue again this June Bank Holiday weekend.

In Cavan Equestrian, Horse Marketing & Event Centre, Full of the Pipe has found its ideal home. The largest equestrian complex in the country played host to Ireland’s premier truck show for the first time last year and that event was a major success for a number of reasons, not least because of the excellent facilities at the venue but also due to its ease of accessibility – greatly enhanced by the improved M3 road network - and the simple fact that it’s an indoor venue. With weather in Ireland being what it is, staging Full of the Pipe under a roof is

26

almost mandatory. It gives the truckers and other visitors a greater degree of comfort and removes much of the unpredictability from proceedings. With the noninconsiderable threat of rain and wind eliminated, everybody can just concentrate on having a good time is a spacious and comfortable environment. Situated on the outskirts of Cavan town, easily accessible from all directions (north and south), Cavan Equestrian, Horse Marketing & Event Centre is the biggest and busiest equestrian centre in the country. It may be renowned predominantly for showjumping and other equestrian events - with proven success in organising and running international performance horse and pony sales - but it is also becoming increasingly popular as an events centre. With 12,000 square metres of indoor space available (as well as outdoor areas), the weather issues that plagued previous Full of the Pipes

were put to bed for once and for all in 2012. Six years ago, major redevelopment transformed Cavan Equestrian, Horse Marketing & Event Centre into a versatile venue for hosting all sorts of events – large scale or small scale, concerts or exhibitions, indoor or outdoor, the aforementioned 12,000 square metres capacity comprising three arenas all under one roof. The organisers of Full of the Pipe were drawn to the venue last year not least because of its vast and versatile range of facilities, including a large sand arena, two grass arenas, a restaurant, two bars, full lighting, heating and electricity as well as a PA system throughout, toilets, changing rooms and paved tarmacadam truck and car parking facilities. In the past, Cavan Equestrian, Horse Marketing & Event Centre has played host to concerts by the likes of Kenny Rogers, Christy Moore and Jedward as well

as wedding fairs, a military vehicle show, farm machinery shows, a modified car show and an ideal home show. From the word go, Cavan Equestrian, Horse Marketing & Event Centre sounded like the perfect partner for Full of the Pipe. This always seemed like a marriage made in heaven and so it proved last year as Full of the Pipe 2012 went off smoothly, without a hitch, at its new home. Everybody who attended last year’s show was impressed by the facilities and the feedback has been unanimously positive. The venue has received a solid thumps-up from the trucking fraternity and from the Full of the Pipe organisers, so this year’s event promises to be another success. A show like Full of the Pipe needs a regular date in the calendar and a place to call home. Going forward, June Bank Holiday could be that time and Cavan Equestrian, Horse Marketing & Event Centre could be that place!

... The Full of the Pipe Each year, Full of the Pipe, which is completely nonprofit-making, makes a donation towards charity. To this end, some of the money raised this year will be donated to two very worthwhile causes, both of which are focussed on helping children in Ireland – Barnardos Children’s Charity and the William Winder Rainbow Foundation. Barnardos was founded in London in the 1860s by an Irish man, Dr Thomas Barnardo, who was born in Dame Street, Dublin. In 1962, Barnardos began to work with

28

children and families in Ireland, initially in Dublin and the border counties. It remained part of the UK organisation until 1989, when an independent Irish organisation, Barnardos (Republic of Ireland), was born. Since 1989, Barnardos has grown into Ireland’s leading children’s charity, operating over 40 Barnardos Centres in local communities across the country, working with vulnerable children and their families. Barnardos also run a number of national services supporting parents and professionals with an

information resource network and counselling services dealing with childhood bereavement, adoption and a Guardian ad Litem service representing children's interests in court proceedings. In addition, Barnardos is using its extensive experience of working on the ground to lead a number of public awareness and advocacy campaigns to help reach the vision of making Ireland the best place in the world to be a child. “There are one million children in Ireland - a quarter of our population. It is

amazing that so many people can make so little noise. We idealise childhood and talk about cherishing all the children of the nation equally; but one in nine children live in consistent poverty in Ireland today. Barnardos has been shouting this for some time now and repetition doesn't soften the fact that 110,000 children are hungry, cold, and corralled in marginalised communities that are products of bad planning and under-investment.” One in three children in disadvantaged areas leave school with severe reading and writing difficulties. five children leave school before completing their Leaving Certificate. Every year Barnardos works directly with over 6,300 children and families across Ireland, who struggle with a range of issues, helping children make the most of their lives, regardless of what they're up against. Barnardos has a long tradition of service in communities across Ireland and set themselves high standards. Their work relies on the generosity of their supporters, the commitment of their staff and on the unshakable belief that Ireland really can be the best place in the world to be a child. Barnardos’ vision is an Ireland where childhood is

valued and all children and young people are cherished equally. The William Winder Rainbow Foundation was set up by William’s parents in memory of their son. With the help of friends and family, the Foundation aims to raise awareness of youth issues and difficulties that both youths and parents are going through and to offer support and information to youths, parents and schools. The founders hope to bring the Foundation to schools to talk to all students and offer a counselling service to

let them know that there is something out there to offer support and awareness at difficult times. As well as raising awareness, the Foundation wants to provide help and support to communities and to make youths aware of who to contact if they find themselves in a difficult place. The William Winder Rainbow Foundation wants to Reach out to those who need it most; to create Awareness among IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

youths, families and friends; to provide Information to youths and parents who need it most without delay; to provide the Numbers to give the help and support they need; to help family and friends to Be aware of youths that might need some support or help at a difficult time; and to encourage youths to Open up and not to Worry - that there is always someone to talk to or listen. No one should ever be embarrassed or ashamed to ask for help. By supporting these two charities, Full of the Pipe can help make our communities a better place to live for some of our most vulnerable citizens.

FUN UN FOR ALL THE FAMILY F

Full of the Pipe isn’t just for truckers. Great efforts are being made to ensure that the truck show offers plenty of fun for everyone. The average trucker spends enough time alone on the road, isolated from his family. So the organisers of Full of the Pipe are endeavouring to put on as much family entertainment as possible so that the haulier can bring the family along with him to Cavan for the day (or for the weekend). One individual who’s helping out with the on-site entertainment is Monaghan man Colin Walker, the driving force behind colinwalker.ie. At Full of the Pipe 2013, colinwalker.ie will provide a wide array of fun for both kids and adults (bigger kids!)

32

alike. Colin is renowned as a local entertainer / magician and has brought his shows nationwide to great acclaim over the years. Appropriately, his motto is ‘Fun for all the family’ and this fits in perfectly with the spirit that Full of the Pipe is trying to engender, with its emphasis not just on trucker but also on truckers’ families. Some of Colin’s best-known attractions are zorb balling, magic shows, horrible histories, Take Me Out, Choo Choo trains, bungee trampolines, Ireland’s highest inflatable climbing wall, water slides and bouncy castles, Giro anti-gravity chairs, boxing kangaroos, sumo wrestling, gladiator duels, mobile discos, karaoke, face-

painting and balloon modelling. For further information on any of these, take a look at his website – you might be interested in using his services in the future. Colin does everything from children’s birthday parties to large corporate events and no job is ever considered too large or too small. He caters regularly for private parties and corporate events / festivals / promotions etc., with recent high-profile clients including Taste of Monaghan Festival; Virginia Pumpkin Festival; Plaza Hotel, Dundalk; Creevy Pier Hotel, Donegal; Cavan County Council; Taste of Dungannon; Formula Fun, Balbriggan; Monaghan County Council; SuperValu;

and Taste of Wicklow Festival. This will be his second year providing entertainment at Full of the Pipe. “I’ll be bringing one of Ireland’s biggest kids attractions – the four-bed bungee trampoline (complete with bungee cords and harnesses, bungee trampolines are a huge attraction and talking point at festivals and corporate events throughout Ireland),” he reveals. “We’ll also have the giant slide and inflatables, kids ride-on Choo Choo train (which has 14 carriages and can accommodate up to 14 people), the anti-gravity chair (pioneered by NASA to introduce trainee astronauts to the concept of zero gravity, this experience will entertain

and test the nerves of all age groups), face-painting and balloons. “There will be some other side attractions as well. I’m currently discussing these with a few other lads but they have yet to be confirmed.” Based in Monaghan town, Colin has been well known as an entertainer for many years but only opted to set up his own business four years ago. He is delighted to be working with Kevin Mulqueen and Colin Hegarty again this year and points out that these two guys have made a great impression on him with their inherent sense of decency: “I was there last year as well, when it was in Cavan Equestrian Centre for the first time, and it was a very good experience. Kevin and Colin are very professional and well-organised but they are also good lads. They’re easy to talk to and you couldn’t meet two nicer lads. “I think they’ve found the ideal venue for a truck show as well. With the event being

held indoors, you won’t get in trouble with the weather, which would have to be a m a j o r concern here in Ireland at any time of the year, even in June. It’s an ideal venue and I’m looking forward to heading over again this year.” Unfortunately, Colin doesn’t have his own HGV(!) so he’ll have to bring his raw materials over to Cavan from Monaghan town in a few runs, which is hardly ideal but all in a day’s work in this line of business! “I’d say it’ll take me four runs to get over but sure we’ll just have to allow for that. I’ll probably start bringing the equipment over on the Thursday or the Friday. I think

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

I also have Take Me Out down in Carlow that weekend, so I’ll try to get as much as possible over as early as possible. “I’m really looking forward to it and hopefully they’ll get a good crowd in. To be honest, there probably weren’t as many kids and families there last year as we’d ideally have liked but hopefully the numbers will be up this time. I think that is one of the things they are trying to push, to

make it a weekend for everybody … ” With a seasoned entertainer like Colin on hand, it certainly promises to be an entertaining and enjoyable weekend for all concerned! This year’s Full of the Pipe promises to be the biggest and best yet with an abundance of attractions to keep even the most discerning visitor occupied.

S R O S N O 2013 MAIN SPONSORS P S

Money makes the world go around

We take a look at some of Full of the Pipe’s main sponsors for 2013.

Organising an event of the sheer scale of Full of the Pipe represents an absolutely huge undertaking. Something like this is not simply going to ‘fall into place’. Enormous amounts of man hours are required to make sure that the weekend ticks over smoothly. The logistics of getting everything right are frightening; there is just so much to do. The organisers have to form a clear picture in their heads of what they want; then they have to make these images become a reality. But vision, hard work and time are not enough to get the ball rolling. There is

36

one other key ingredient, without which Full of the Pipe would be a dead duck: finance. Funds have to be brought in from somewhere to keep the machine oiled and one important source of funding for Full of the Pipe is sponsorship. To this end, the nation’s premier annual truck show is fortunate to be able to depend on a team of official event sponsors, whose support and input is vital in giving the hauliers of Ireland a show they can be proud of.

Kevin Mulqueen and Colin Hegarty prepare to bring Full of the Pipe to the Cavan Equestrian Centre for the second successive year, Moran Signs has once more come on board to provide some welcome sponsorship. Main sponsor of the trucking extravaganza in its first two years, Moran Signs in

Castlepollard, County Westmeath has been synonymous with Full of the Pipe since Day One. There from the start, Damien Moran knows all about the importance of this show to the trucking fraternity at large, who get an opportunity to let their hair down and mingle with their peers over the course of a fun-filled and

One of these sponsors is Moran Signs, which has enjoyed a longstanding relationship with Full of the Pipe since its inception four years ago. As

enjoyable weekend, whilst also making valuable contacts and being introduced to some interesting new ideas and products. Damien hails from a trucking background himself, with his father Jimmy and brothers Declan and James owning and running Eagle Motors Truck Repairs in Mullingar, selling and repairing all types of trucks, trailers and commercial vehicles. Moran Signs will have their mobile exhibition unit on-site over the weekend of June Bank Holiday and will be able to provide all sorts of truck graphics on-site as well as number plate systems and tshirt printing. “We are really looking forward to the show as it is growing every year. It’s great to see the truckers of Ireland getting something back and to be able to show off there top-class lorries,” says Damien. As for his own company: “Truck graphics is getting bigger and bigger,” Damien notes. “That aspect of the business has really taken off in the last couple of years and it’s a very important part of our overall business now.” To what extent has

Damien’s visibility at the Full of the Pipe show each year played a part in this increased interest in the product? “It’s hard to know for sure how much of a positive effect it’s having but it certainly isn’t doing us any harm. There’s just a big demand there at the minute for truck graphics.” Using the latest state-of-theart equipment and drawing on years of experience and professionalism, Moran Signs carries out a top class job, every time. Over June Bank Holiday weekend, Damien will be at Cavan Equestrian Centre, demonstrating his services and hopefully generating some more business for Moran Signs: “As I said, I’ll be bringing the mobile exhibition unit with me and I’ll there on-site over the two days fitting graphics onto trucks and also doing up teeshirts etc.,” he notes. And it would be an exercise in understatement to point out that Damien is looking forward to the show. He’s been counting down the weeks since it was confirmed that Full of the Pipe was definitely going ahead once more in 2013: “I can’t wait for this year’s show,” he confirms. “It’s going to be a great weekend. Last

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

y e a r ’s show in Cavan was great and this year’s is sure to be another success. It’s definitely something to look forward to.” Renowned nationwide as the sign-writing specialist, Moran Signs designs graphics and signs which are tailor-made for your business, using state-of-the-art technology to produce highquality, durable and economic signage, which is guaranteed to get your business noticed. From vehicle graphics for trucks and vans to pitch signs, safety signs, stickers, labels and t-shirts, Moran Signs can cater for every eventuality.

The t-shirt printing service will be available to visitors at this year’s Full of the Pipe, who can choose a t-shirt and have their own unique, oneoff garment produced in a matter of minutes. But vehicle graphics is the real draw for truckers. When you’re looking to get your business noticed, vehicle graphics and wraps are a great way to stand out from the crowd. Especially in the current economic climate where spare cash is at a minimum and most operators cannot afford to invest in new trucks; simply having your existing unit brightened up or

39

Sponsors GOOD designed_Layout 1 16/05/2013 16:24 Page 5

transformed by the addition of some professional, eyecatching graphics is a fine alternative. Unlike billboards or other advertising, vehicle wraps are mobile advertising, giving you exposure to many

different markets as you drive along, going about your daily business. Whether you’re interested in having work done on one van or an entire fleet of trucks / vans, Moran Signs can come up

with a solution that makes sense. Deploying cutting-edge techniques and precise manufacturing standards, you can be sure that all vehicle graphics offered are designed and applied to exact specifications, resulting in exceptional durability and beauty. On a weekend when vehicle graphics will be very much to the fore, with some of the most spectacular trucks in Ireland all gathered under one roof, Moran Signs will be on hand to offer some expert advice and guidance. Speak nicely to Damien and he’ll do you a good deal too!

Bits ‘N’ Bobs Truck Accessories in Monaghan town is another important official sponsor of Full of the Pipe. Barry McMahon set up this business in conjunction with his wife Paula in 2002. Bits ‘N’ Bobs specialises in a wide

40

range of interior and exterior truck accessories to suit all makes and models of lorries and is sole Irish agent for Kelsa. Barry is a big fan of Full of the Pipe and he rates it as the best event of its kind taking place anywhere in Ireland right now, pointing out that the move to an indoor venue last year was a stroke of genius from organisers Kevin and Colin. While it’s all fine and well moving to a covered venue, the organisers have also found a spacious and ideally-located one, with excellent facilities. Hosting Full of the Pipe on the Bank Holiday weekend also makes perfect sense. “It was a very good show last year,” says Barry. “It’s easily one of the best truck shows in Ireland. In fact, I’d go so far as to say it is the best of them all. It’s in-door, so the weather doesn’t matter and the whole thing is run off very well. “It’s very well organised by the two lads and they’re two great lads, I have to say – you couldn’t meet nicer.” Barry believes this year’s

A message from Greg Thompson, Head of Corporate and Fleet Management at eFlow Making motorways work better for over 600,000 registered customers

Established in 2008, eFlow is Ireland’s leading toll solutions provider, having introduced the first electronic barrier free toll on the island of Ireland on Dublin’s M50. Almost 600,000 motorists are now registered with eFlow. As a registered customer, motorists benefit from automatic toll payment on all toll roads in Ireland, reduced journey times and cheaper toll rates as tag-registered customers on Dublin’s M50. By year end 2012 eFlow celebrated in excess of

27,000 business accounts from across the island of Ireland. Today, one in three vehicles using the tolled section of Dublin’s M50 is part of a fleet. eFlow put much of this increase in registrations down to our dedicated fleet management service which was introduced to manage the growing number of fleet customers. Our business accounts are made up of an extremely diverse range of companies both in terms of size and type. The larger fleet customers include freight operators, haulers, exporters, rental car firms and taxi companies right around Ireland. Each business customer - who own and operate these large fleets of vehicles - are assigned a dedicated eFlow fleet manager who handles all

transactions under one single account, making tolling as simple as it can be for the business and for the vehicle driver. Businesses also benefit from significant cost savings as an eFlow– registered fleet customer. eFlow’s own research indicates that business customers with 20 vehicles or more are achieving savings of over €5,000* per year, under the toll providers pricing structure. This represents a major cost

saving for businesses with significant fleets travelling throughout Ireland. eFlow in the community While eFlow remains focused on its business objectives, it is the work and support that eFlow undertakes in local communities that define who we are as a company. eFlow has initiated a sponsorship programme which focuses on supporting projects and initiatives which provide tangible benefits to youth projects in local communities. We seek to encourage active citizenship and community development at grass root’s level in Ireland eFlow is a sponsor of ‘Full of the Pipe’, which takes place in Cavan this year. Events like ‘Full of the Pipe’ give us the opportunity to meet our customers and to talk to them in a social environment. It helps us to understand our fleet customers and their needs and thereby allows us to continually improve our customer service offering. eFlow’s sponsorship and

support of activities are designed to make a difference in the communities in which we operate. The same drive and innovation that helps us to bring best in class service to our customers inspires us to create a best in class company and to share this success with the communities that we are part of.

And, last but certainly not least, the main sponsor of this year’s Full of the Pipe is once more Boreman Ltd., an innovative company specialising in the design, manufacture and distribution of Auto-Electric lighting. Boreman Limited was founded in October, 1997 as a supplier of spare parts for the Irish truck and trailer market. During 2001, Boreman

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Limited first noticed a niche in the Auto-Electric lighting market for a young enthusiastic company willing to expand industry design boundaries. In late 2002, Boreman Limited sold off the majority of its business interests, concentrating exclusively on Auto-Electric lighting. Boreman Limited launched its first Auto-Electric product range of spot lamps with complete “E” Homologation at Auto Mechanika in Frankfurt later that year. Since then, the Boreman Limited name has become synonymous with quality. They currently offer nine products ranges consisting of over 90 products into more than 20 export markets. All product designs and tooling are 100% owned by Boreman Limited. Boreman Limited is currently the only Irish company using its own designs and tooling to manufacturer fully “E” Homologated Auto-Electric lighting for the truck and

trailer industry. Lighting solutions are provided to cater for all the main manufacturers, including Scania, Volvo, Iveco, MAN, DAF and Renault. “Boreman Ltd. are proud to continue our support of the Irish trucking business and once again be the main sponsor for Full of the Pipe,” says Daragh Boylan.

“We congratulate Kevin and Colin on a fantastic show. The trucking industry has suffered more than most over the past five years so it is a credit to you all that this show can have such overwhelming support. We at Boreman Ltd. are determined to do our bit by offering you top-quality products at affordable prices; remember that when you buy Boreman you are supporting Irish business and Irish jobs. “Have a great show and good luck to all the entries in the various categories! THE HUNT FOR PRIZES

Why do truckers exhibit their vehicles at truck shows? How much preparation and expense goes in to getting the truck looking its best? What does it mean to bring home a coveted cup or trophy? Exactly how seriously are these competitions taken? We decided to get some insight from a man who knows better than most, a man who goes to Full of the Pipe every year and whose instantly-recognisable, prizewinning Topline Scania is well known on the truck show circuit. While Full of the Pipe is first and foremost a weekend of fun and socialising, a truck show would not be a truck show without some kind of competitive edge. Truckers who bring their vehicles to compete for the various prizes on offer are not merely doing so on a whim. Anyone who enters a competition does so in the hope – no matter how slim it

is – that perhaps they might scoop the silverware at the end of the event. This is simply human nature. Making up the numbers is not an option. Irish Trucker caught up with a man who frequents as many shows as possible and who regularly comes away with the laurels at most of them, including Full of the Pipe: Dublin-based Martin Hunt of Island Transport. Martin’s truck is a real showstopper. An owneroperator with just the one vehicle, he takes immense pride in his stunning Topline Scania and takes it to as many shows as possible, frequently driving out the gates with the top prize shimmering beside him in the cab! “I won the top prize at Full of the Pipe before and the truck has also been fairly successful at other shows,” he notes. So, what is a truck show like Full of the Pipe all about? Why does he give up his time

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

to attend these events? “It’s about a weekend away really and you get to meet the guys and talk to them. On a day-today basis, we’re all busy and we might only see each other through the windscreen as we pass each other on the road. But at Full of the Pipe you get to meet all the lads and have the craic with them.” However, Martin admits that the main reason why he goes is to put his beloved truck in the spotlight for a couple of days: “I go to show off the truck, no doubt about it,” he concedes. “It’s a Topline Scania rigid and there are only one or two others in the country. This is my dream truck, the one I always wanted to drive, and I like to bring it to shows and show it off. “Of course, I’ll have a few beers and relax the same as everybody else but I put a lot of time and money into getting the truck right for the show and that’s what I’m

there for at the end of the day. “I take a lot of pride in this truck and this is an opportunity to let other people have a look at it. It cost me a lot of money to purchase the truck in the first place and you spend a lot more every year maintaining it and customising it and getting it right not just for the show but for day-to-day use. “I bought it brand new in 2008 and have put a lot of extras into it and everything in the truck is top spec. Recently I’ve had it resprayed and added new lights and got a new back door. You add to it all the time to keep it looking its best and to keep your own interest in it.” Operating as Island Transport, Martin drives the truck himself, under contract to Crown Paints in Dublin. To an extent, every day is almost like a dream come true for the self-made trucker who always wanted to get behind the wheel of this exact truck. That

he has made a living out of something he’s so passionate about speaks volumes for his industry and determination. “I’ve been doing this for the past 13 years,” he says. “This is my second new truck. I suppose you could say I worked my way up to it. I got a new Volvo in 2003 and it served me well but I always had my eye on a Topline Scania and this is the one I always wanted. I used to see the Dutch flower trucks coming into Dublin and I always wanted one for myself. The one I bought is exactly the same as those and I take great pride in it, which is why I travel to these shows to show it off. “It’s also important to support the shows because there aren’t too many of them. Kevin Mulqueen and Colin Hegarty, who organise the show, are good fellas and they put an awful lot of time into it. I couldn’t speak highly enough of the two lads. They don’t get anything at all out of it, so it’s nice to go up and support them. “This is only the fourth year of Full of the Pipe and it’s already the longest-running show in Ireland. Compare

that to Holland or England, where many truck shows have been running for 20 or 30 years. So, clearly we need to support the show before it too disappears. “It would be nice if it was established as a regular date in the calendar every year because people will support it and get their trucks looking right for the weekend. Sometimes there can be an element of messers coming to these shows and spoiling if for everybody else, so hopefully that won’t happen.” Martin is looking forward to June Bank Holiday weekend and has his fingers crossed that his trusty Topline will come into contention for a prize. “It’s a bit of craic but it’s also nice to win and for people to recognise that truckers are spending a fortune on the presentation and upkeep of their vehicles. “I’m a competitive person by nature and I like winning. But, if someone else’s truck does better than mine then I have to accept that they also put a lot of work in and then try to do even better the next time. Fellas put a lot of money into this and they go to all the shows and there’s no such

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

thing as an undeserving winner. “I’ve worked very hard for this and I put a lot of pride into the truck. So do the other guys. You see them every day out on the roads and it’s nice to sit down and relax with them and have the craic. “It’s nice to see the other trucks as well. Cavan is close to the border and they bring some smashing trucks in from the North. It would be

nice to see the main dealers there too; they’re not showing much interest in supporting the show compared to what you’d see at a show in Belfast or England. “Full of the Pipe was big last year and hopefully it will be bigger and better this year … and even bigger again in 2014,” the affable Dubliner concludes.

SOME REMOTE VIEWING

An exciting new attraction at this year’s Full of the Pipe Show is a novel display from RC Trucks Ireland, who will be exhibiting some of their eye-catching models and inviting members of the public to have a go at operating them. Irish Trucker contacted group founder Kevin McGovern to get the lowdown on what exactly RC Trucks Ireland will be bringing to Cavan Equestrian Centre over June Bank Holiday weekend. There are toys and then there are not-toys! Toys for big boys (i.e. men) are a serious business and woe betide any unauthorised individual who interferes or tampers with them (or dares to call them a toy!). Radiocontrolled trucks fall into this category. A new craze sweeping across the nation, we will get to see what all the

fuss is about when RC Trucks Ireland members exhibit some of their finest models at Full of the Pipe 2013. “It will be a good display,” says Kevin McGovern, who was the driving force behind the genesis of RC Trucks Ireland. “We will have something for everyone in Ireland to come and see and we will be inviting some audience interaction – maybe we’ll get them to load a pallet or something using the remotecontrolled truck. For a truck show, this is certainly something new and novel and different, and I’m confident that visitors to Full of the Pipe will be very interested in it.” It may be a new fad in Ireland, but chances are that interest in these remotecontrolled trucks will

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

take off here just as it has done across the continent. “It’s only starting off here now, really, but this is very big in countries like Germany and the UK,” Kevin notes. “It’s unique and I expect people to be taken aback when they see these trucks and what they can do. “RC Trucks Ireland

is a one-in-14-scale remote control truck group and, to be honest, we’re only really in the process of getting the group off the ground at the moment so we’re hoping to get a bit of exposure from our presence at Full of the Pipe.” How did RC Trucks Ireland come about? “Basically, I bought one of these trucks myself and at first I

thought I was possibly the only one in Ireland who had one. However, I soon got in contact with a few others who had them and we had a few meetings and then set up the group. We’re just taking it from there. We have regular meetings and just come together and show the trucks off.” According to my old friend Wikipedia, radio controlled (or R/C) trucks are self-powered trucks that can be controlled from a distance using a specialised transmitter. The term R/C has been used to mean both remote controlled and / or radio controlled, which today will normally refer to vehicles controlled by a radio-frequency link.

are removable for realistically depicting a low carrying load. Realistic chassis and suspension further add to the imposing form of this unique model. LEDs accurately recreate the trucks front and rear lights and 3-Speed Transmission allows gear shifting to be controlled during driving for added realism. Metal leaf spring suspension is included and the cabin tilts forward just like the full-sized truck. Pretty amazing stuff and it would be worth going to Full of the Pipe this year just to check out a few of these! History will be made at Full of the Pipe 2013 as the club’s new roadway will be seen in public for the first time.

of venue we’re displaying the trucks at,” Kevin continues. “In Cavan for the Full of the Pipe, I think we’ll have an area of approximately 40ft x 30ft. There will be buildings and forklift trucks and we’re hoping the exhibition will look the part. We’re only getting started, really, though, and this is our first public appearance, so fingers crossed it will be a success.” Where are these miniature, radio-controlled trucks sourced? “They can be purchased online. There are a number of model shops stocking them and you can also buy them on Ebay. At the moment, as this is only a new thing to Ireland, online is the way to go.”

they are an expensive hobby and a basic truck is going to cost between €600 and €800. “Tamiya and Wedico are the two main manufacturers and you can get all makes of model trucks – Scania, DAF, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz and MAN. These can be fullycustomised to suit the customer’s needs, with light bars etc. and you can then get various trailers for them.” Sounds like the kind of hobby that should appeal to most truckers: “I work in transport myself, in warehousing for a transport company, and most of the other lads in RC Trucks Ireland would be truck drivers or have a keen interest in

The attention to detail on these trucks is astonishing. I decided to take a look online and quickly discovered a veritable plethora of 1/14 trucks and trailers (pole trailers, tippers, tankers, lowloaders, fridges etc. etc.) for sale. One that particularly caught my eye was a Tamiya Scania R620 6x4 Highline, available to purchase at €474.99. Must admit, I was tempted. This massive tractor truck features 3-axle and is approximately 458mm long. Beautifully reproduced cabin tilts forward separately from the fenders, just like the actual truck. The accurately modelled fenders themselves

“We’ve bought a roadway (lay-out) to run the trucks on and we will be bringing this to the show,” Kevin confirms. “This is going to be its first public appearance. We’ve only purchased it and it’s going to be used by the club at our regular meets. We bought this roadway in from a company in England and we only received it there last week. It allows people to see the trucks in a whole different light and we’re looking forward to unveiling that at the show in June.” Clearly, this will be a lot more pleasing that just looking at the trucks sitting on the ground. “It can also be adjusted to suit whatever size

And how many of the vehicles will be on display at Full of the Pipe? “We’re hoping to have a minimum of ten trucks and if other guys turn up on the day it will add to it. The more the better but, as things are, we hope to have eight to ten trucks guaranteed. It’s a new thing here in Ireland and it should bring in a crowd and hopefully people will enjoy it. “Anything that a real truck can do, these trucks can do. To that end, we’ll be doing something to get the crowd involved. Maybe everyone will be able to have a go for a small fee of €1 or €2. But I would have to stress that these trucks are not toys –

lorries.” Kevin confirms. “It’s not a private group. It’s a public group and everyone is welcome to come along to our meetings. It’s not just for owners; the public are invited to come along and have a look. “We’re hoping to meet up regularly once a month and that the truck show this weekend will get more people interested in our trucks and that more and more people will join or get involved. Hopefully, we’ll get a positive reaction.” Full of the Pipe is the ideal venue for RC Trucks Ireland to put themselves in the public window.

reakdowns and worse, crashes are something that all motorists strive to avoid, but unfortunately they are an every day part of life. The stress of these can be very hard on people, but when you have a professional, reliable service like Tierney Recovery looking after your vehicle, then they can make the burden that much easier to deal with. Specialising in the recovery of cars and light commercials, this Cavan based firm relies very much on a work ethic. Dessie's wife Martina looks after

the administration side of the business and he admits that the business would be nowhere without her assistance. “Martina basically looks after everything on the administration side of the business and she just couldn't be done without. We have two employed full time and two lads part time and they are all very good at what they do, which makes my job that bit easier," said Dessie. Dessie may think that it is a 'small operation' but his large customer base suggests otherwise, the majority of

which come from the public sector and the MD admits that there location is key to the success they have sustained over the years. “We are on the N3 which means we are ideally placed to cope with breakdowns on the motorway. Our work would be divided between the public sector and the private sector. We would carry out a lot of work for insurance companies and to be fair that is where most of our work comes from. “We are fortunate to have a very loyal customer base, many of who have IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

been with us from the start. We have worked hard to build the business up over the years." Dessie started the business in 1981, but those days he concentrated solely of service and repairs as well as sales of new and used cars which they continued up until the midnineties. Through customer inquiry, he begun recovery work in the mid-eighties, while still operating the garage, but by the early 90's, he was concentrating solely on the recovery work. "By that time, I had enough recovery work to keep me going, so I decided to do that on its own. We have five vehicles on the road and they can recover anything up to a light commercial. It is essential to keep the vehicles well maintained as Health and Safety is paramount these days. That is why we would

check our vehicles on a daily basis, while they would be services on a regular basis. In this line of business, no corners can be cut and no chances can be taken. To this end, Tierney Recovery is fully certified and does everything in compliance with existing legislation and recommendations. Dessie confirms. “You have to be clearly visible when you're out on the road and you have to keep all the equipment fresh, clean and in prime working order. Image is everything so we look after our fleet. A full 24-hour service is provided, seven days of the week, 365 days per year. A professional, prompt and

affordable service is provided at all times and Tierney Recovery is renowned for getting the job done on time every time. As the company's stellar reputation spreads, they are benefiting from more and more business through word of mouth. Simply put, this business is now established as one of the premier recovery / breakdown operators in Ulster. A comprehensive service is provided under one roof and the availability of a fully-qualified crew of mechanical repair technicians using the latest state-of-the-art equipment means customers can be back on the road in double-quick time. “We're available 24 hours a day to

recover anything from a moped to a light commercial. We are contracted to carry anything up to 3 and a half tonnes. We can recover a vehicle from literally anywhere - the roadside, out of a bog or wherever it might be stranded. Our equipment is very versatile and for that reason the work can be quite varied." Dessie is pleased to report that he is reasonably busy at the moment. In general things have slowed down a bit. Things have picked up in the last six months or so, which is encouraging. From '06 up to '09, it was booming. Things have been a lot quieter since, but we're still kept ticking over. This work can be seasonable, but in all honesty even though many might think that the winter is busier, I think the summer can be busier at times as people are driving a lot faster. As for the future, Dessie concludes: “We'll try to keep our overheads down, keep the money coming in and offer as much help as possible to the people who need our service. We have no major plans to expand for the time being, but we are pleased with the direction that the business is heading.”

O’Toole Transport excel in domestic chilled pallet network service Part of the impressive fleet

Co. Galway-based O’Toole Transport is reaping the rewards of a decision taken three years ago to establish a full chilled pallet network in Ireland.

A

lready recognised as a market leader in the international refrigerated transport sector, the family-owned business – which is a National & International award winner – decided in 2010 that a change of focus was needed in order to sustain the remarkable growth it has experienced since it commenced trading in 1996.

60

The firm operates 80 highspecification refrigerated trailers

Three years on, O’Toole Transport’s domestic chilled pallet network service now accounts for 70 per cent of its business. At the same time, the company has continued to export quality Irish seafood to Europe, and has maintained its existing customerbase on the Continent. “From 2010 onwards, we changed

strategy,” managing director Laurence O’Toole explains. “We’ve maintained the same levels of export, whilst putting more of an emphasis on the domestic market. We still export 20-25 loads of seafood groupage to the Continent every week, but this part of our business has been outgrown by our chilled pallet network here in Ireland. “We set out our strategy in 2010 to become a chilled domestic distributor, because that’s where we saw the greatest potential for growth, and thankfully that has paid off for us. It has been challenging, but rewarding at the same time. We now have four depots which allows us to provide a next-day delivery service throughout the country and have plans to open a fifth depot in Cork in the not too distant future.” O’Toole Transport currently oversees 3,000 weekly pallet movements within Ireland, with vehicles trunking between the four depots in Moycullen (which has remained the company’s headquarters), Limerick, Waterford and Dublin. O’Toole Transport can collect IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

full loads or single pallets for overnight distribution to all parts of the country. Last year saw the company moving into a distribution facility in Dublin Port. The facility is a key component in its pallet network service and has allowed it to meet growing business demand in the Dublin area. “Our operations are still run from Moycullen, but Dublin has become our main cross-dock hub,” Laurence continues. “It has six loading bays and has been a huge addition to the company. Mary, Finance Director, manages the Dublin depot along with Mike Burke and Joe Navin. Our depots in Moycullen and Limerick are also chilled cross-dock facilities. Our trucks deliver pallets in the morning and collect them in the evening before bringing them back to the distribution centre for next-day delivery nationwide. “We service all the major retailers, including Musgraves, Dunnes Stores, Tesco, Lidl, Aldi and Londis. We have customers of all sizes. The indigenous manufacturer who gives us one pallet a day will get the same service as the multinational who’s giving us 200 pallets a day. Quality, reliability and a top-class service is always assured.” Customers know exactly where their goods are at all times thanks to O’Toole Transport’s GPS fleet tracking system. “We’ve invested heavily in IT and in our tracking system,” Laurence notes. O’Toole Transport is one of Ireland’s fastest growing transport companies. The firm received its first National Haulier of the Year award in 2004. By the time it picked up its second award in 2007, the fleet had almost doubled in size to 28. And in the six years since then, the figure has almost doubled again to 50 with 80 high-specification IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

refrigerated trailers. In addition, the opening of the new depots has seen its staff numbers grow to 80. In August of last year, O’Toole Transport became the first Irish logistics company to be awarded BRC

Three generations - Larry O’Toole with his son Laurence, and his three sons, Ryan (13), Henry (2) and Roman (1)

(British Retail Consortium) Storage & Distribution Accreditation for food products stored and distributed from its distribution centre. Certification bodies use the BRC Global Standards across the world to enable suppliers to achieve globally recognised standards for food products and to ensure the best practice is established and maintained. To achieve certification, O’Toole Transport was audited and scored by independent assessors on the standard of storage and distribution of ambient, chilled and frozen food products, and associated food packaging, product inspection, quality control inspection as well as the chilling, freezing, tempering and defrosting of food products. “It has become a big selling point for us,” Laurence proudly states. “We put a big effort into securing the BRC accreditation. involved a three-day audit by an external company. It was a rigorous affair, but was well worth it in the end. This accreditation further endorses our increasing reputation as one of the major players in the food supplychain industry. We are constantly auditing and improving our storage and distribution services and the award is a formal recognition of this.” O’Toole Transport was established 17 years ago when Laurence’s father Larry bought a Scania rigid. The company’s immaculately turned-out fleet is a mixture of Scania and Volvo, while its livery is metallic blue and white. Laurence is joined in the business by his sisters Mary, who is Finance Director and, Ellen, who is Human Resources Manager, and his parents Larry and Angela. Richard McNamara was appointed General Manager in 2012, Victor Farrell – who the O’Toole’s took on as their first driver in 1997 – is operations Manager, while

Joe Flynn is Imports Coordinator. O’Toole Transport’s headquarters are based in Moycullen, which is situated 8km west of Galway city on the western seaboard. Located on the four-acre site are a purpose-built garage, cold storage unit, office, spacious yard and distribution base for UK and continental markets. Through its networking with its transport partners on the Continent, the company provides a cost-effective

solution to onward delivery throughout Europe. O’Toole Transport constantly strives to give the highest possible customer service through its use of strict quality procedures. Laurence concludes by paying tribute to the company’s staff: “There is tremendous experience in our team, we have an extremely loyal team of drivers, who have played a huge part in our success, and I’d like to thank them for that.”

Waste collection permits centralised, streamlined and simplified Members of the NWCPO team (from left): Liz Carbury, Fidelma Naughton, Emma Molloy, Leo Duffy, Helen Rosney, Sinead McEvoy, Natasha Troy. The genesis of the National Waste Collection Permit Office in Tullamore, County Offaly last February has simplified the process of applying for and processing waste collection permits. Regardless of the collector’s location, all permits are now processed and managed from one central hub and – with the system conveniently accessible and amendable through online portals - life is a whole lot simpler for everybody concerned! 64

A

s of February, 2012, all new waste collection permits are being processed and issued from a new national office in Tullamore, County Offaly: the National Waste Collection Permit Office (NWCPO). The office is also reviewing all existing permits. The new centrally-operated service is also fully operational online, all of which makes life much easier for hauliers involved in the transportation of waste, who can focus more of their attention on doing what they do best. The new service was initiated with a minimum of fuss by team members from neighbouring County Councils in Offaly and Westmeath, who got the ball rolling when they went to Dublin to present their submission to the County and City Managers’ Association (CCMA) in late 2011. The Local Government Efficiency Review Group had recommended that waste collection permits should be issued nationwide from a single point and expressions of interest were invited by the environment sub-committee of the CCMA from existing nominated authorities. Offaly / Westmeath County Councils made their presentation in October, 2011 and were notified that they had been selected in December, 2011. The successful presentation was based on using online services and ICT to improve efficiencies and service quality. Services would be offered on a shared basis, with Offaly County Council looking after admin and Westmeath County Council providing

the IT expertise. A project team was established to ensure that all targets were met, legalities were sorted out and other local authorities were advised to nominate Offaly County Council to look after all waste collection permits. The National Waste Collection Permit Office in Tullamore has been processing all new waste collection permits for Ireland since February 1st, 2012. The transition was seamless. Files (electronic data and hard copies) held in the offices of the nine nominated authorities were transferred to the NWCPO without any problems and permit holders already providing a waste collection service experienced no interference / delays. They were simply informed that their file was now held at the NWCPO. All additions, deletions, changes and reviews would henceforth proceed through the national office and an online portal was introduced, further streamlining the process and enabling waste permit holders to make amendments themselves. The genesis of one national office has generated obvious efficiencies, particularly in the area of IT. As the nominated authority for the midlands, Offaly and Westmeath County Councils had already worked together, specialising in administration and IT respectively. Now, their combined expertise and foresight has conceived a centralised national waste collection permit process that is completely operational online, from initial

registration through to the public inspection of collectors’ permits. The online facility incorporates public, waste collectors’ and local authority portals which allow all three parties to access the information relevant to them. On the ground floor, waste enforcement teams remain active in both local authorities, checking on waste collections and collectors and ensuring that everything is being done properly. The team at the NWCPO works in conjunction with both the CCMA and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to enforce and maintain the very highest standards of health, safety and compliance. Efficiencies were also possible in terms of appointing the seven team members at the NWCPO, who were redeployed to the national office, while the fact that collectors can now conduct their own business online has reduced the administrative manpower needed in this area. All individuals, companies and partnerships intending to carry out waste collection activities for reward anywhere in Ireland must apply to the NWCPO for a waste collection permit. To ensure that applications are processed efficiently, applicants should ensure that all forms are filled out correctly and all the required documentation is included. Collectors are advised to engage in a preapplication consultation prior to lodging an application.

Since the waste collection permit system was amalgamated into the National Waste Collection Permit Office, the waste collection permit register is now held by the NWCPO and can be accessed via www.nwcpo.ie. The Waste Facility Permit and Certificate of Registration registers continue to be hosted by the EPA and are available at www.epa.ie. An application form for a waste collection permit can be downloaded from the NWCPO website or by contacting the office by telephone: 057 9357428. For a multi-regional permit, the fee payable is €1,000 per region (up to a maximum charge of €5,000 for all ten waste regions). Each permit is reviewed after five years, a fee of half the original fee applying for this review. All reviews are now carried out at the NWCPO. The National Waste Collection Permit Office has already been a huge success since its inception. Long term, its presence is set to be of enormous benefit to everybody involved in the waste collection sector.

A new era

Work is carried out on a Scania truck

A new dawn has arrived in the technology of tachographs. Digital tachographs are devices fitted to buses and trucks. They record the amount of time drivers spend driving and resting, as well as capturing data about the vehicle. Digital tachographs are now mandatory in the EU. 68

U

nder EU and national law, the cab of trucks and buses must be fitted with recording devices known as tachographs. Their function is to record the driving times, breaks and rest periods of individual drivers. Vehicle speed, distance travelled and other related metrics are also logged. Data is stored in mass memory inside the unit and on driver-specific smart cards. In Ireland, the Road Safety Authority is the legal body responsible for issuing these cards. The records must be available for inspection by enforcement officers to ensure that the laws governing driver hours and rest times are fully complied with. Failure to comply with these requirements could result in prosecution by the RSA. Although most commercial vehicles must carry a tachograph, there are some classes of vehicle that are exempt. One of the leading companies for tachograph calibration is Corr Brothers Ltd. This well-known business has been operating for over 30 years now and can be conveniently found at 101 Ballyard Road, Milford, County Armagh - about two and a half miles from Armagh, on the Keady Road. The location is ideal for customers from a wide catchment area either side of the border, most notably counties Armagh and Monaghan, where haulage is particularly strong and plays a key role in the vibrancy of the local economy. Corr Brothers was established in 1976 by brothers Brendan and Gerard Corr. The business initially focused on Heavy Vehicle Mechanizing and has since went through several changes to arrive at its current state. The business has now moved in a new era under the Management of Gerard's sons Mick and Chris keeping the business name and core values going. Widely recognised as a thoroughly-professional commercial vehicle engineer as well as a leading

pre-test centre, the reputable family-owned business specialises in tachograph calibrations and repairs as well as brake testing, service, maintenance, bodywork, spares, general repairs, while a 24hr breakdown service covers the whole of Ireland and the U.K. Through a policy of offering only the highest quality level of service possible, the Milford-based commercial vehicle centre has deservedly forged an exceptional reputation amongst the local trucking fraternity. Company director Chris Corr gave us an insight into the latest technology regarding the tachograph industry, which he revealed is hugely beneficial to hauliers. The S.E 5000 Exakt tachograph has received Type Approval and following last year's One Minute Rule savings, is again the first in the market place to offer a product with new features which help drivers organise and manage their driving time more efficiently. The new Stoneridge tachograph will be available through 46 authorised Stoneridge workshops throughout the country. “The new features will provide drivers with real time information on their current situation, including countdowns on drive and rest times, as well as giving useful warnings when nearing the driving limits (including 9 hours daily driving time, maximum daily drive time and weekly and biweekly drive time),” said Chris. “We know that over 75% of Drivers' Hours offences detected by enforcement authorities are down to miscalculations on drive or break/rest times and so this latest tachograph was designed to help drivers manage these easily and keep within the Drivers' Hours legislation.” Maximising driver and vehicle utilisation allows drivers to easily handle deviations from preplanned schedules and, coming as standard in the new model there is no extra cost for these features.

A 24-hour breakdown service has been added to the company’s portfolio IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

It is important for fleets to minimise costs so it has also developed a free online training tool to help fleets and drivers find out about it and get started with digital tachographs. The useful instruction videos and tutorials mean that as soon as a fleet switches to the SE5000 Exakt Duo, they'll be able to reap the benefits of the pioneering new technology built in to the first 'One Minute Rule' tachograph. “The SE5000 Exakt Duo is also 2nd source of motion ready in line with the new 1266/2009 legislation due to come in later in the year, and will continue to offer the One Minute Rule time savings which have seen fleets benefiting from an average of 45 minutes extra driving time per driver per day. “Since we started fitting the last year, we have installed over 500 and that shows the interest in them. They are very popular with our customers, many of who would be coming from down south.” Another area of the business that has seen expansion is the parts department where they stock a wide range of mirrors and lights exclusively for mirrors and lights. Corr brothers have recently launched their online parts store. Whilst not yet offering all parts in their range this is new and expanding aspect of the business: http://www.truckpartsni.co.uk “We have converted an old shed into the parts department and we stock lights and mirrors for all Scania and Volvo models. “ Chris admits that the ability to be able to diversify into different areas has been a massive boost for the company, especially during the current economic climate. “Being able to supply so many services has certainly helped us. When one area is a bit quiet, usually another is fairly busy. We

are happy with the direction that the company is heading and as for the future we will just have to see what that holds. In line with recent changes to Operator Licensing and in keeping with GVC Regulations (NI) 1990 No 224*, Corr Brothers are pleased to offer our customers routine vehicle inspection services. These inspections can be scheduled to suit your requirements. Our standard inspection encompasses over 100 separate inspection items including everything from Tyre Thread to Inside cab, Ground level and Under Vehicle, Brake performance, Tachograph and Lights. Growing in recessionary times

Roskell Logistics are headquartered in Newcastle, Co. Dublin

Roskell Logistics was established during the recessionary times of the ‘80s by MD Lin Keegan, with one truck and one route. By dint of hard work and determination, the company has grown steadily over the past 25 years to become an industry leader in the field of Transportation and Logistics.

T

hat steady growth - up to and including these ‘recessionary times’ - has continued and reflects the ability of the company to respond to the changing needs of their too has Roskell Logistics. A clear example of this is that a division of the company provides an ‘order pick and pack’ service for customers. In this regard, they have some 270 employees dedicated to this, including appropriate management and supervisory staff. This division of the company grew in direct response to customer requirements. If there is a ‘secret’ to Roskell Logistics’ success, it is that the customer can depend on the company

72

to provide the service they have committed to - on time, every time. One can never talk about success or growth in a time of recession without referring to cost. Like any other organisation - including Roskell’s customers - they constantly have to review each cost item in their business. The challenge facing their financial manager is to ensure that every euro is spent wisely without taking short cuts that provide short term savings. This is best exemplified in the area of parts replacement, with the use only of parts supplied by the manufacturer. Budgeting and financial control may not be the ‘sexy’ part of the operation but it ensures that the company has the

essential life blood of cash to run the business successfully. The company’s customer base is concentrated in five of the ‘blue chip’ public companies in the Newspaper and Food Products businesses. Their relationship with these customers, established in the formative years of the company, is based on providing consistent reliability in delivering their products over the 32 counties of Ireland. Each customer is similar in that the product must be delivered on time. There is no room for error so this means a 24-hour monitoring of vehicles and a rapid response in the event of any threat to delivery. With an average of 100 vehicle journeys per day, this is a

roskell designed_kevin burke designed 16/05/2013 17:39 Page 2

challenge to the management team that has been built over the years. Roskell Logistics’ control centre, based in Newcastle, County Dublin, constantly monitors vehicle locations. Constantly manned, on rotation, by one of their management team, an established ‘rapid response’ procedure ensures that, irrespective of the event, an immediate response is initiated to ensure that the customer gets the product on time. A unique feature of this company is that they are by far the leader in the collection of Newspaper print from the various Print Plants located throughout Ireland with the subsequent delivery of these papers to various ‘satellite hubs’ for packing and subsequent distribution. This service covers all the major titles available in Ireland. The fleet of 70 vehicles ranges from articulated trucks to vans and an additional complement of 70 trailers. As a substantial portion of business is in the distribution of food stuffs, many of these vehicles are refrigerated with the appropriate equipment to maintain required temperatures. The company has chosen not to limit itself to a particular truck supplier but over the years has identified particular suppliers and vehicles within their range that best suit their needs. At a time when vehicle costs and depreciation are going in opposite directions on the graph, the decision has been made to keep ‘new vehicle’ procurement at a minimum. The size and sophistication of the maintenance department reflects this decision with a planned full part replacement schedule in operation. The company is proud to maintain its consistent base of suppliers for fuel, tyres, parts, insurance and supporting services. The maintenance department has a fully-equipped garage with a Manager and four mechanics, whose responsibility is to keep the fleet capable of fulfilling the commitments they give to customers. Complementary to this, they have a supply parts section charged with the responsibility of procuring the designated parts on a ‘just on time’ basis. With the statutory requirements for vehicle testing regulations and planned maintenance this is a busy department representing significant expenditures. An example of this is Roskell’s in-house ‘vehicle recovery IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

future are in place, not the least being succession planning for the future. This is reflected in the quality and diverse skills and experience in the management team. As Lin concludes: “In these days and times, survival for many companies may be the only target on the horizon, but for Roskell Logistics we see the future as a continuing challenge and opportunity to build our business. “Our customers, by their very nature, do the same and we will continue to provide them with a service that will be second to none. As their business builds, so will ours.”

H

&H Motors is renowned as the premier purveyor of Renault cars and commercial vehicles not just in Waterford city and county but throughout the south-east region. The long-established dealership is located in a prime facility off the Butlerstown Roundabout, offering customers an unrivalled service from modern, purpose-built premises. H&H provides a complete range of passenger cars and commercial vehicles as well as a wide selection of used vehicles. As well as sales, full maintenance and mechanical repairs services are provided as well as keen finance packages. Commercial vehicles have never been an afterthought at H&H. To the contrary, a major emphasis has been placed on providing solutions to discerning business and fleet customers, with specialist services tailored specifically towards them, including a state-of-the-art van workshop. Recently incorporated into the Renault Pro+ network, H&H is now is a stronger position than ever to look after commercial vehicle users. The Pro+ agency is highly sought-after and merely

acquiring this represents a clear endorsement of the unrivalled services provided at the Cork Road dealership. Renault Pro+ is a franchise dedicated entirely to business customers, from sole traders to local fleet and semi-state companies. Effectively a onestop shop for all van needs, it offers fleet expertise through dedicated and highly-trained staff, comprehensive sales service, aftersales service and finance solutions. Worldwide, the Renault Pro+ family is growing fast, now with 400 sites. Pro+ specialised dealers offer a full range of cars, vans, electric vehicles, converted vehicles and finance solutions, geared to the business customer’s needs. Renault Pro+ also offers very specific vehicles such as box bodies, tippers, ambulances, refrigerated vehicles, chassis cabs and crew cabs. To coincide with its joining of the Pro+ network, H&H held an extended launch of the Renault Pro+ programme, which commercial sales manager Fred Deevy says was a major success: “We held a successful Pro+ launch, which ran for three weeks up until April 6th,” he notes. “We had signs up and bunting and a number of display vehicles on show. The launch generated plenty of interest and thankfully we managed to secure a number of new contracts.” The Renault Pro+ programme ensures that business and fleet customers can find everything they need on one site. The tenets of Pro+ are: a sales and aftersales team dedicated to business customers; a large display of commercial vehicles including conversions; no booking needed - on the spot commercial vehicle test drives;

guaranteed quotes within 48 hours; commercial vehicle maintenance and repair for vehicles up to five tonnes (all makes welcome); and extended working hours for business users. “Our ability to offer converted vehicles through Renault is a big part of it. We have a good display of converted vehicles here in the yard,” Fred continues. “This includes box bodies, tippers, fridges etc. We work in conjunction with the main commercial builders in the country to deliver these conversions and we can come up with a solution to suit any user – basically anything that can go on a chassis. “One of the converters we deal with – Cahill Truck Bodies in Graignamanagh – has also been approved as a Renault Pro+ centre, although we do work from a comprehensive list

of converters. “We can give an immediate quote and there is a very quick turnaround from the moment the conversion is agreed. Finance can also be approved within a matter of hours, through Renault’s own RCI Financial Services, which is excellent.” Between full-time and part-time workers, H&H Motors employs a team of 18 at its state-of-the-art facility, which incorporates showroom, workshop, offices and forecourt. Ken Rochford is Sales Manager and Barry Teehan is Business Manager (Finance Products). “Nothing is left to chance and we go out of the way to make sure all our guests are comfortable,” says Fred. “There’s WiFi in the waiting area and lots of space for customers to drive in and out and to park their vehicles. “There’s also a great rapport between everybody here and it’s a great place to

be. That good atmosphere leads to a more pleasant experience for customers.” In terms of commercial vehicles, Fred is confident that Renault is leading the way: “Renault commercials have always been No.1 in Europe but they are now taking Ireland by storm. The Master van, for example, is in a league of its own and with a five-year unlimited-mileage warranty across the range, Renault vans really are ideal for fleet operators or couriers.” Add in the long service intervals, economy, reliability and availability of finance at keen rates and buying – or leasing – a Renault commercial vehicle has never made better sense! Looking to the future, Fred – who has been part of the H&H Motors team since November, 2005 - is optimistic: “I think the future is bright going forward for both Renault and H&H Motors,” he

concludes. “We definitely see that the business owners who have pulled through the economic downturn, and who have cut costs and rationalized, are now buying commercial vehicles again and they can get even better service and lower rates from us now that Renault Pro+ has arrived.”

relevant insurances and licences etc.” The company proprietor is pleased to report that things are very much on the up, with the prevailing economic climate meaning that there’s plenty of demand to have vehicles transported from A to B. “There was a bit of a dip three years ago but thankfully we’ve been very busy these past two years. I was half expecting things to slow down a bit after Christmas but, if anything, we have been even busier so far this year, so I can’t complain. “There’s huge demand for secondhand cars these days and we can bring them to any garage anywhere in Ireland, full loads or part loads.” No job is considered too big or too small. Eleven vehicles can fit onto one transporter and any number of cars or vans can be picked up and delivered. “It’s all about trying to fill a full load. You won’t get this in one order so normally you will have to combine deliveries. You could be calling into auctions or private collections and picking up one or two vehicles at a time. So, even when you have a full load, chances are that will be eleven different deliveries.” Careful planning and knowledge of the terrain are vital. But Gordon Johnston knows exactly what he’s doing. “I handle the logistics of the business and Seamus Boyle

everything’s running smoothly. Things can change while you’re on the road – a pick-up could be added or one could

be cancelled – so you have to have your wits about you.

“You have to be able to think on your

feet too. Say, for example, you go to

an auction to pick up a car and it turns

out that vehicle hasn’t been paid for yet... There’s not a lot of time to play with and you can’t afford to miss the ferry, so you have to be as efficient

and economical as possible.” Like everyone else in the transport sector, Gordon has been affected by the soaring price of fuel. “The cost of diesel has impacted on my profit margins but I’ve had to put my rates

up to account for this. The haulier can’t absorb these increases and, in fairness, most customers understand that running costs have gone up.” Looking to the future, the proprietor of Johnston Car Transport is quietly optimistic: “I’ve taken on two new vehicles this year and two new drivers, so that will keep us ticking over. Business is going well and I can’t complain.”

McNamee Tyres:  For all your vehicle requirements

McNamee Tyres has become a one-stop shop for motorists

Your tyres, being the only part of your vehicle to touch the road, are critical to ensuring safe motoring. Tyre maintenance and timely replacements will actually save you money and help avoid accidents. 84

H

owever, there is a growing trend among motorists that second hand tyres are cost efficient and almost as good as new ones. How wrong can a person be? McNamee Tyre Services Managing Director JJ McNamee speaks to Irish Trucker about the growing concern of part worn tyre sales and he also talks about his own business. JJ has 20 years' experience in the tyre industry and in 2006 he decided to establish his own business and it is a decision that he has never regretted. “I was involved in the tyre trade for about 20 years so when I decided to go out on my own, I had built up a good network of contacts over the years and this was a great help when we started off,” said JJ. In their 7000 square foot premises, situated in Unit 19, Lough Sheever Corporate Park in Mullingar, Co Westmeath, McNamee Tyre Services offers the customer so much more than just tyres as servicing, exhausts and batteries are also catered for. “There are five car bays to the front, a truck bay to the rear, as well as 30 car parking spaces outside the building. We can ensure your car is running at optimum efficiency and safety with the best tyres, parts and service available. “We stock all the major brands of tyres available and in total we would have in the region of 15 brands to choose from, which gives the customer plenty of choice. Tyres are a very important piece of equipment on a car. “A lot of people seem to think that they are getting a good deal by buying second hand tyres, but they are not. They will only last a quarter of the length that a new tyre will last, which means that they are buying four times as many tyres then they should be.” McNamee Tyres give their customers the safety of mind that when buying a tyre, they know that they are getting a good product at a competitive rate. “We offer the most competitive prices across our vast array of tyres. We don't compromise on quality or safety with any of our tyres and expect only the best from the brands we stock.” Since April 1st, 2010, McNamee Tyres carry the 'E' mark on all their tyres, which is essential for any car to pass the NCT test. Of course the success of any business would not be achievable without a reliable and efficient work force and to this end, JJ is delighted with the staff that fly the flag for the company on a daily basis. “The skill and experience of our staff is a priority. Our aim is to bring top quality service and the keenest prices to our customers. We stock a large range of tyres at our centre however we can order any tyre to suit a customer's particular needs. cared for the way you would expect. There are six employed here, all of who are highly trained in their area of expertise. My wife Fiona looks after the accounts and all the paperwork.” There are three full time mechanics at McNamee Tyres who look after the servicing requirements needed. Amongst the services provided are the pick up and drop off of the customers' vehicles as well as a comprehensive service that includes full safety check- brakes, lights and tyres as well as NCT corrections. They would also cater for timing belts, clutches, 4 Wheel laser alignment, headlight focusing and any other area that may need attention. “We can collect your car from your place of work and drop it back when it is finished ensuring that you are not having to worry about not being able to get to work. We also offer a full 24 hour per day, 7 days per week breakdown service offering you peace of mind while out on the road. Call

087 6944677 at any time for our 24/7 breakdown service. McNamee Tyre Services also stock the very best brands of car and van batteries and offer a very fast fit to ensure that customers are up and running again in little time. Why should you replace your exhaust? If your exhaust system is damaged, it should be replaced because toxins burned off within it may cause the following: Rust to build up on the exhaust system over time; Increased fuel consumption and running costs. “If you exhaust is

C

arryduff 24-Hour Recovery is a perfect example of a company that doesn’t need to be big to attract blue-chip customers. Servisair, McCreath Taylor and McCulla Refrigerated Transport are among those who avail of the company’s services on a regular basis. As one of Northern Ireland’s leading vehicle recovery specialists, Carryduff caters for a wide range of customers who have had the misfortune of breaking down or being involved in accident. Carryduff 24-Hour Recovery’s distinctive red fleet of recovery trucks have been a familiar sight on the

roads of Northern Ireland for the best part of two decades now. And while it has remained relatively small, the company has come a long way since its establishment by Robin Dorman in 1994. Explaining his background, Robin says: “I worked as a mechanic for McCulla Transport in Lisburn for 14 years before I left them in 1992. I then went out on my own as a mechanic for two years before buying my first recovery vehicle, which was a Mercedes 814 tilt and slide. Since then, I’ve built up the fleet to 10 trucks and have expanded to provide a nationwide service. I would also do work in the UK and on the Continent if

the needs arises.” The Carryduff fleet now includes three 11-tonne Mercedes tilt and slides, one 26-tonne Scania 113 tilt and slide accident unit equipped with a 17-tonne meter crane, one Volvo FH16 heavy underlift, one Scania 143 tractor unit with low loader and one Scania 142 tractor unit. In addition, Robin owns three Scania 141s, which are all 1970s models, that he has restored to their former glory. He recently travelled to Rome to pick up a fourth Scania, which he is also in the process of refurbishing. “It’s something I do in my spare time. I like putting my background as a mechanic to good use. I’m very proud

of my vintage Scanias. I’ve entered them into a number of shows, including the Peterborough Truck Show in England. It’s a nice distraction from work,” he explains. Carryduff 24-Hour Recovery prides itself on offering exceptionally high standards of customer service. Committed to excellence at all times, the company understands the need to meet the demand of the modern road transport industry where reliability, customer care, quality and value-for-money are the standard requirements. Robin and fellow operative Alistair Boal are thorough and highly-skilled HGV drivers who hold all the relevant certificates. Carryduff’s heavy recovery vehicles boast the latest state-of-the-art equipment which ensures a safe and reliable recovery. The Co. Down-based company can recover everything from a motorcycle to a car to a large truck, and also specialises in forklift transportation.

Vehicle recovery is a demanding and often times exhausting business to be in, but Robin can count on the support of fellow recovery specialists in the greater Belfast area when the going gets tough. “It’s the sort of business that never allows you to relax. You’re waiting for the phone to ring all the time. You could get called out late at night to the scene of a serious accident, which can be hard. When I’m called to deal with an accident where a number of vehicles are involved, I usually get help from Alan Agnew of Agnew Recovery in Ballyclare. “I’ve also linked up from time to time with Joe Watson of Watson Recovery in Portadown and Derek Spears of DS Recovery in Dundonald. We’re all one big happy family!” Carryduff 24-Hour Recovery’s reputation as one of the North’s foremost recovery specialists is reflected in its impressive client list which includes Servisair at Dublin and Belfast City Airport, McCreath Taylor in Lisburn, Wright’s Bodyshop in Carryduff, Belfast Land Rover Centre, McCulla Refrigerated Transport, Bridge Commercials in Dromore, Truck Rentals in Carryduff, Carryduff Auction Group and Downey’s of Newtownards. The company buys its parts from Transport Supplies in Belfast. Servisair is a leading global provider of aviation ground services, which avails of Carryduff Recovery’s lifting equipment for the movement of device and specialised units. McCreath Taylor specialises in the supply and hire of a wide range of municipal equipment to the waste management industry. Another good customer of Robin’s is his former employer McCulla

Transport, which offers temperature controlled haulage and refrigerated storage across Ireland, the UK and Europe. “I still enjoy an excellent working relationship with McCulla Transport, who have a fleet of over 100 trucks,” Robin continues. “We have a great contract with Servisair as well but, at the end of the day, I treat all my customers the same regardless of how big or small they are. I value and appreciate all the business that comes my way. I run a small operation which attracts business mainly through word of mouth. Keeping a low profile has never done us any harm.” Recently, Robin has developed a new storage area and a state-ofthe-art workshop on his premises at Carryduff, which is located just a few miles south of Belfast. As a result, he can now provide secure storage for recovered vehicles.
