CBD Social Action at Work! This is the 12th year that CBD‘s Social Action has prepared and served a Christmas meal for the homeless at a shelter. We had a challenging start and fielded questions like: ‘where are our bags of supplies, where did the pumpkin pies go, what happened to the pounds of butter and milk for the mashed potatoes, how come the 30 pans of stew are still mostly frozen; and how are we going to heat all that stew without use of the broken steam cooker?!”

President’s Perspective

Page 5

Even with all this initial confusion, the CBD crew of 17 volunteers still managed to pull off a very successful and speedily produced dinner for several hundred cold and hungry guests at the HomeFirst Shelter.

February Calendar

Behind the scenes was a cast of around 50 people who made the dinner possible including 27 stew makers recruited by Dorothy Dorsay; 17 cookie chefs gathered by Jane Jacobson; and 7 financial donors to help Barb Green buy the trimmings.

February Birthdays

The results? Over one hundred pounds of stew, 1,200 beautiful cookies and all the trimmings needed for a full Christmas Eve meal with enough leftover for a second meal! Planning for this meal starts months ahead of Christmas! Thank you to Judy Levin for serving as the over all coordinator for this endeavor. We feel proud that we not only served a hearty dinner, but also provided the entire meal to help give the HomeFirst Shelter staff a needed break and enhance the stock of food for their guests.

From the Rabbi By Philip Ohriner Dear Friends, It is with tremendous gratitude and anticipation that I approach a three-month sabbatical beginning May 22nd. The term "sabbatical," which is related to the word “Shabbat” or time of rest, refers to a leave from normal responsibilities. Its roots come from the Torah, in Leviticus 25, as God instructs Moses on Mount Sinai: “When you enter the land that I assign to you, the land shall observe a Sabbath of the Lord. Six years you may sow your field and six years you may prune your vineyard and gather in the yield. But in the seventh year the land shall have a Sabbath of complete rest, a Sabbath of the Lord.” A rabbinical sabbatical allows a rabbi to revitalize, study, and explore new facets of Jewish spirituality and learning. My Sabbatical will allow me to deepen my spiritual resources, gain knowledge and skills that will allow me to serve our congregation better, and create the space for rejuvenation and professional renewal. Part of my time will be spent travelling to other congregations of excellence around the country to meet with their rabbis and learn about the innovative work they and their congregations are doing that could be adapted for our community. We are blessed to live in an area at the forefront of revitalizing Jewish congregational life, so much of my work on this front will be here in the Bay Area. As a pulpit rabbi I rarely have the opportunity to spend Shabbat and Festivals in other communities. I am excited to see what is going on elsewhere in Synagogue excellence as the main professional goal of my Sabbatical. My secondary professional goal is to take the time to (finally) learn how to play the guitar. As a classically trained musician, I am well aware that the only real key to learning a new instrument is practice, practice, practice! My Sabbatical will allow me the time to devote to the muscle memory work that defines guitar playing. My hope is to come back from my Sabbatical with the ability to play and sing together and to bring that skill to the time I spend with our children, teens, and even in select prayer services. On the personal side, I am looking forward to doing a week or two of solo traveling abroad and spending a couple of weeks exploring the grandeur of our country’s national parks with my family. However, the element of Sabbatical I am looking forward to the most is spending more time with Shoshana, Ari, Eli, and Kobi. They all frequently make sacrifices so that I can be present for our beloved community and congregants. It is a privilege to be able to offer more of myself to them during this Sabbatical. Planning has already begun to ensure full coverage of my professional duties at CBD. We are blessed to have an amazing staff and lay leadership that will ensure the congregation is well cared for in my absence. As we get closer to my departure date, Bill Beyda, our president, and I will be communicating the plan to our whole community so that you know where to turn as needs arise during my time away. I consider it one of the great blessings of my life to be the Rabbi at CBD. I know this time away from our community will allow me to return with greater energy, more ideas, and deepened knowledge. L’shalom,

Rabbi Philip Ohriner

A Panel Discussion with:

Rabbi Philip Ohriner

Pastor Arvin Engelson

Shaykh Alaeddin El Bakri

What do Jewish, Christian and Muslim Scriptures teach about our obligations to serve humanity, both inside and outside of our religious community? Congregation Beth David, Saratoga Federated Church, and West Valley Muslim Association invite all to a panel discussion with Rabbi Philip Ohriner, Pastor Arvin Engelson, and Shaykh Alaeddin El Bakri.

Saturday, February 25th 1:15 – 2:45pm at CBD Space is limited. RSVP http://trialogue.eventbrite.com Learn about the unifying teachings from our sacred texts which can guide all Jews, Christians and Muslims to cooperate and collaborate in service to the poor, suffering and marginalized. Kosher and halal refreshments will be provided following the panel discussion.

Rabbi Philip Ohriner received an M.A. in Hebrew Arts and Letters and rabbinic ordination with a concentration in Talmud and Rabbinics. He also received training in clinical pastoral skills and worked as a chaplain at Bellevue Hospital in New York. Rabbi Ohriner served as the Legacy Heritage Rabbinic Fellow at Congregation Beth Israel in Flint, Michigan, before joining Congregation Beth David.

Pastor Arvin Engelson received his masters degree at GordonConwell Theological Seminary and a doctorate at Princeton. He deeply values dialog with all for whom faith is difficult. He also enjoys helping people experience both subtle and substantive forms of transformation when they at an impasse, captive to issues, in need of healing, or seeking truth and grace to live in reality.

Shaykh Alaeddin El Bakri began his study of Islam in North Africa and continued his education in the Islamic sciences in Jordan, learning from predominant scholars in the Muslim world. He has served the Muslim community in the United States in numerous capacities. President’s perspective By Bill Beyda

As I enter the beginning of my term as President of Congregation Beth David this February, I am both excited and challenged by what lies ahead. My excitement is hard to contain. Every time I walk into the building, I can’t help but smile. I spent half of December bringing our out-of-town visiting relatives into CBD to show off our beautiful building. We have it all: a growing and caring congregation, a beautiful building, vibrant programming, excellent educational offerings, varied prayer services with many options, and fantastic clergy. Whether it’s expanding existing programs like ḥavurot (friend groups), the richness of our affinity groups like Hazak, or the new activities for women like Ladies Who Lunch and Dames Who Dine, we are striving for more connectedness between our members at every opportunity. Our beautiful building showcases everything we do, and makes things possible we only dreamed of in the past. It can never be said enough times, how grateful our community is to my predecessor Dan Skilken, who envisioned the project, got all of us excited about it, and drove it to completion through sheer willpower and brute force. Not even Dan could predict he would be here 100 hours a week in the last six months of the building project. I think it’s safe to say that while we have had numerous fantastic presidents in the past, nobody spent more time at Beth David in a six-month period than Dan did. He did this purely out of his love for the Congregation and his vision of what CBD could be. It’s truly remarkable, what he started and finished. Of course none of it would have been possible without the generous donations that so many of you made. But without Dan, I think it’s safe to say we never would have started such an endeavor, as I don’t know who else could have made it happen. Following in his footsteps is no easy task, but I will do my best for all of you to make CBD the place you want it to be. First, we need to finish financing our building. Under Dan’s leadership, a process was started to collect input from the Congregation on various alternatives. I hope you either attended the informational meeting on January 22nd or will attend the second one on January 30th at 7:30pm. The committee will take your input in these meetings and hopefully formulate solutions that can be voted on at the April 2nd Congregational meeting at 10:00am. I am confident that together we will find an appropriate solution that will put these concerns behind us and place us on firm financial footing for the future. Second, we need to address the recent news that Rabbi Alexander has chosen not to renew her contract. The programming expertise she brought to our Congregation, her welcoming of new members, her joyous smile, and her warm heart will be deeply missed on our staff when her term ends this August. Fortunately, she remains a member of our Congregation and I can’t wait to see what she accomplishes in her new role as a vibrant and active volunteer next fall! The good news is we have almost 8 months to plan for her departure so we have some time to think through the various alternatives. Third, Rabbi Ohriner has reached the point in his term with us where his three month sabbatical is coming up late this spring. Please read more about that in his article in this newsletter. I can assure you that the Board of Directors will work with him to ensure we have proper coverage for all tasks during his absence to minimize any disruptions. Thank you in advance for your confidence in me and the slate of Directors you have elected. I promise we will diligently work to address the needs of the congregation and manage its funds. We will strive to do so in the most open and transparent way possible. Please remember, all of our board meetings are open for you to attend, are announced in the emails you receive and are on the calendar on our website. Hope to see you there!

Bill Beyda, CBD Board President 5

Frog, Toad, What? By Carol Cassell

Tikkun Olam Action Day (T.O.A.D.), is coming April 30th for the whole congregation. It’s a combination of Mitzvah Day and Earth Day! Some of the events planned are:

·

Making blessing (supply) bags for the unhoused (homeless). These would have individually packaged items such as trail mix, hand-sanitizer, tissues, wet wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste and more. We will all have the opportunity in advance to contribute these items. We plan to make more than 100.

· · · · ·

A speaker from Mazon, and a penny drive supporting Mazon.

·

Make a first aid kit for yourself. A $5 donation is requested. Bonnie Hirsch, a nurse, will curate what goes in the kit. Kids can decorate the cloth bag holding the supplies.

·

“Build” for Second Harvest - Bring boxes and cans of food to build a sculpture in the mercaz of all the contributions.

·

Knitzvah yarn project for kids. Children will make a yarn gift for a child in a shelter and take one home for themselves.

·

The chance to learn about and sign up for “Peninsula Food Runners”.

Make yourself a sandwich, and make one for another to be delivered to those who are hungry. Decorate a flower pot and plant a plant for a CBD homebound senior. This includes a promise to deliver it. A guided discussion on “greening” our shul and our homes. Beautifying our synagogue home by doing a CBD parking lot clean up. Fill a bag, and a small sum will be donated to Mazon.

If you have any other suggestions for Tikkun Olam Action Day (T.O.A.D.) and would like to lead an activity please contact Carol Cassell or Iris Bendahan at cbd.socialaction@beth-david.org

Other upcoming social action events: February 11th at 1:00pm - After Kiddush Mitzvah Hour The After Kiddush Mitzvah Hours are a messy success! So many people of all ages participate, I can’t keep track of them. One afternoon 60 complete bag lunches were made for the homeless and on another afternoon over 100 cheese sandwiches were made, filling two full shopping bags. (Judy Holtzman sure knows how to set up an assembly line!) The food was driven to the Julian Street Inn by Patty Hughes. A big thank you to all the participants. February 12th at 9:30am - Mah Jongg Tournament Proceeds from this tournament help support the rotating shelter which CBD provides in the summer (see page 12). Seema Cicerone will be cooking for the luncheon at the tournament on Saturday night , February 11th at 6:30pm. If you would like to help, email me, Carol Cassell ,at carol.cassell99@gmail.com

February 25th at 1:15pm - Trialogue Panel Discussion: Serving Humanity and Its Challenges All are welcome to attend the Trialogue Panel Discussion with Rabbi Philip Ohriner, Pastor Arvin Engelson, and Shaykh Alaeddin El Bakri on the various perspectives of the Abrahamic religions on caring for the marginalized, poor, and those in need. The next day CBD will meet with West Valley Muslim Association and Saratoga Federated Church, to continue our dialogue together while we prepare a meal for one of the area shelters (see page 9).

In addition, we are helping our community each month with a different item collection: February - diapers and formula, the top items needed by single mothers. March - new socks May - gently used winter clothes Drop these donations in the deposit slots in the cabinets to your right as you come in the glass entry doors at CBD. Some have mistaken these slots for trash bins, they are not! Please fill them with good things, not bad things. As you can see, we are really active in our Social Action effort. All it needs is you. Come give of yourself at upcoming events, contribute to collections and please join our committee. The next meeting is on Sunday, Feb 19th at 10:00am. 8
