TESTIMONIAL

I would like to say a BIG thank you and to the entire staff of Lemontree Concepts, and especially Alvin, Steve and Mark for making my dreams become a reality. From the time we did our first consultation until the week before, you had the entire wedding from the ceremony to the reception planed out exactly the way we wanted it. The flowers were beautiful and I couldn’t have wanted a better bridal bouquet. You cater to all our needs and more – it was amazing. From both Craig and I, thank you all from the bottom of our hearts, it certainly will be the best day of our lives and the most memorable to our guests. Lots of love Cristal and Craig Bishop.

With the millions of different options out there, it’s quite easy to become overwhelmed. Countdown calendars are useful as they help you to pace yourself and tackle planning and décor details one at a time (see our handy guide on Page 06). A website such as appycouple.com is also excellent, as it provides templates for creating a wedding app and website, allowing you to send e-vites and share important information with your guests, such as hotels and flights, maps and RSVP details. You can also upload pictures, and guests can add theirs too! Despite having all these services at your disposal, coordinating a wedding isn’t a job you can take on single-handedly. You’ll need to do your research and make long lists of potential service providers and venues, conduct interviews and then make final decisions, sign contracts and still keep track of all the finer details. While friends and family might be happy to lend a hand, most brides will find the services of a professional wedding planner hugely helpful. A2Z EVENT SPECIALISTS

CO-ORDINATORS

A coordinator brings with them a wealth of knowledge what’s hot in wedding themes, who’s who in the wedding industry, where to find the ideal venue, and how to get you the best possible deals. In the end, you’ll need to weigh up how much your time is worth and whether or not you have enough know-how to plan such an intricate event. At the very least, think about hiring a coordinator to take care of the wedding day itself, leaving you free to savour the moment. While a number of venues provide in-house managers, do find out exactly what they are able to offer you. Most will only take care of specific wedding-day issues and give you a list of their preferred service providers, so hiring your own dedicated wedding coordinator is most likely still a good idea. At the outset you might think that hiring a coordinator is simply an additional expense; however, remember that in the long run they are often able to save you money.

Testimonials: 21ST BIRTHDAY PARTY DURBAN COUNTRY CLUB Olivia acted as party organiser for our son’s 21st birthday at the Durban Country Club. We were in a unique situation in that we live overseas so Olivia played a very important role in organising all aspects of the party for us. She did so with great enthusiasm and efficiency. I found it very easy to communicate with Olivia and we did so via e-mail. She was always prompt in returning mails which made it easy to share ideas. She had excellent suggestions for the party in terms of décor and seating arrangements. I so enjoyed her enthusiasm for what we wanted for the party. She took the initiative with the theme I wanted and had beautiful beaded musical instruments made for table centre pieces. With all the additional touches she added, the tables looked stunning. Olivia’s hard work prior to the party and in setting everything up efficiently made that we were able to arrive in South Africa without any concerns and enjoy our son’s 21st birthday with family and friends.

I will confidently recommend Olivia’s services as party organiser.

STATIONERY HEATHER FITCHET

WEDDING STATIONERY INCLUDES INVITATIONS, PLACE CARDS, SERVICE SHEETS, MENUS, MAPS AND MORE. YOUR STATIONERY SHOULD INCORPORATE A PERSONAL ELEMENT; AFTER ALL, IT REFLECTS WHO YOU ARE AS A COUPLE, AS WELL AS HINTING AT THE WEDDING DAY THEME. THAT SAID, DON’T OVER-CROWD THE DESIGN WITH TOO MANY DIFFERENT ELEMENTS THAT COULD LOOK MUDDLED AND CONFUSED; REMEMBER, LESS IS MORE. Invitation wording should be personal and heart-felt, using simple phrasing such as ‘join us in celebrating our wedding’. While it remains customary for invitations to come from the bride and groom’s parents, many couples opt to send the invitations themselves.

15

Pretty pastel shades are a popular choice for invitations, as are the timeless classics of white, ivory, cream and champagne. Consider lacy or floral embellishments, freehand illustrations, creative calligraphy and images of the bride and groom.

VENUES TYRONE CROSSMAN

YOUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY AFTER GETTING ENGAGED AND ESTABLISHING A WEDDING BUDGET IS TO FIND YOUR DREAM VENUE. If you manage to find a spot that’s just right, chances are all the other aspects of your wedding, from the theme to the colour scheme to the décor, should begin to take shape. Remember, however, that popular venues will be snapped up quickly, so it’s really never too early to start looking around.

Brides and grooms are spoilt for choice when it comes to appealing locations in the beautiful province of KwaZulu-Natal. There are eco-friendly destinations surrounded by lush coastal forests and pristine golden beaches, stately colonial manors set amid sugarcane plantations, country estates in the rolling hills of the Midlands.

VENUES

“ONE OF THE MOST CRITICAL POINTS ON A BRIDE’S PLANNING CHECK LIST, IS THE SELECTION OF THE PERFECT WEDDING VENUE. AND WHEN THAT’S BEEN BOOKED, IT’S THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE ESTABLISHMENT TO MAKE SURE EVERY DETAIL IS QUIETLY TAKEN CARE OF, FOR A FLAWLESS WEDDING.” THIS IS THE VIEW OF JANUS HORN, OWNER AND GENERAL MANAGER OF SICA’S GUEST HOUSE, ONE OF DURBAN’S MOST GRACIOUS WEDDING SETTINGS. SICA’S GUEST HOUSE is a charming, old world sanctuary, situated just far enough away from the city’s hustle and bustle, but with all the necessary modern conveniences for a spectacular function. This 1886 colonial style guesthouse, which is graciously nestled on three acres of Durban’s prestigious Berea, has its own quaint chapel - but for those wishing to say their vows outside, a gazebo is easily organised. The Sica’s functions team assists the bridal couple with planning every step, from designing the invitation card, to orchestrating the farewell arch. Impeccable attention to detail and the flexibility to accommodate every request, sets SICA’s aside when it comes to organising a special event. Not only does SICA’s boast a highly professional but the ambiance of this establishment is highlighted by tasteful décor and impeccable gardens. And when it comes to the wedding feast, the SICA’s chefs and catering team don their aprons to create gastronomic delights to suit every taste bud. The SICA’s function rooms are expertly transformed to meet the design dreams of the bride and each detail, every step of the way, is personally and professionally attended to - from fresh flowers expertly arranged, crisp linen, quality cutlery, class crockery, ample ice and pristine service - are all part of the package. 18

VENUES The SICA’s function rooms are expertly transformed to meet the design dreams of the bride and each detail, every step of the way, is personally and professionally attended to - from fresh flowers expertly arranged, crisp linen, quality cutlery, class crockery, ample ice and pristine service - are all part of the package. As Shakespeare said so many years ago, “If music be the food of love, play on”, which is why at the heart of every Sica’s event, is the stunning accompaniment - sound! From authentic bag pipes, velvet jazz, a classical guitarist, brass ensembles, big oompah bands or the trendiest DJ. For those weddings where guests travel from afar, there is plenty of luxurious accommodation, set in tranquil surroundings, which means no one has to drive. In fact, SICA’s is a haven for bridal couples who choose to make a whole weekend of the extravaganza. And for those sporty guests, SICA’s has an inviting swimming pool and a floodlit tennis court. Another convenience is internet connectivity in each room - there is no need to go in search of an internet café. And the parking... its secure and there is plenty of it, so guests don’t have to worry about the safety of their vehicles.

SICA’s, which is attentively run by owners, Jan, SICA and Janus Horn, is one of Durban’s most charming establishments for every special occasion. Many couples return year after year, to celebrate their wedding anniversary. So, whether it’s a silver anniversary, or gold, bring on the champagne! After each SICA’s wedding, it’s appropriate to say ‘this marriage was made in heaven’. But 19

even if there is no special event, SICA’s is the perfect place to hide away from it all for a few days and be gently pampered. VENUES

There are also exclusive game lodges in ‘big-five’ country, a variety of resorts and guesthouses in the mountain splendour of the Drakensberg, and sophisticated five-star or boutique hotels in the city. One of these special destinations could become the place where you and your partner celebrate the next chapter in your relationship together. VENUE LOGISTICS If you plan on having a church wedding, the location of your reception venue will need to be in fairly close proximity to that of the ceremony. However, if you’re content with a civil wedding, this will widen your options greatly. Today many reception venues host both the wedding ceremony and the reception; a practical option which also minimises potential transport complications. You should have a rough idea of how big your wedding is going to be before looking at venues - you don’t want to set your heart on a particular place only to discover it’s too small to accommodate all your guests! Also think about the type of reception you’re planning. You’ll need more space for a formal, sit-down dinner than a cocktailstyle affair. And don’t forget the entertainment; a band or DJ will take up lots of room, as will a dance floor! HEATHER FITCHET

VENUE

A MAGICAL SETTING in an enchanted garden PREPARE TO BE WELCOMED AND ENCHANTED, TO EXPERIENCE A WHOLE NEW WORLD OF MAGIC IMPECCABLY DELIVERED WITH GREAT STYLE. Located in the rolling hills of KwaZulu-Natal, just 20 minutes from the city of Durban you will find the lush green village of Kloof, and at its heart MAKARANGA, complete with hotel, restaurant, wedding and conference facilities. Few places in South Africa can boast a more wonderful setting for work and leisure guests, young and old, mobile and immobile, day visitors or long term stays. Rest assured you will be changed for the better for having experienced the peace and tranquillity of MAKARANGA’s 30 acres of indigenous and exotic botanical gardens, 18 ponds, meandering streams and a waterfall. Southern Africa’s largest collection of Zimbabwean stone art, as well as a selection of Italian sculptures, are tucked away in the gardens, all awaiting your discovery. The interiors provide a visual feast of original art and décor making MAKARANGA a sensory experience no matter what the weather.

Wedding ceremonies are held in the gardens, and the reception is held in the Sibeko venue. The use of MAKARANGA’s beautiful gardens with its stunning backdrops, Italian and Shona sculptures, winding pathways and water features guarantee an awesome photographic session. MAKARANGA is the ideal venue for an elegant wedding catering for up to 160 guests. 22

VENUES

Another prime consideration is your budget. Get a price estimate, including menu and bar prices and corkage fees, and the cost of waitering staff. Some venues offer discounts on accommodation as well as other services if you’re prepared to be flexible. TYPES OF VENUES What type of wedding venue best suits your plans? Traditional venues such as hotels and guest houses, which usually have set wedding packages, are an excellent option. Choose anything from an elegant boutique hotel, to an upmarket international resort or a charming country inn. Hotels are also able to provide in-house food and drink as well as accommodation for the bridal couple and the guests. However, remember that the larger hotels may host more than one wedding on the same day so there could be issues with a lack of exclusivity. Perhaps a golf or country club is just what you’re looking for. Many have beautiful buildings and grounds that are ideal for a wedding reception. Like a hotel, they’re also used to catering for large numbers of guests, particularly if you’re after buffet-style catering. For a smaller wedding party, a restaurant could offer a sure-fire recipe for success! It’s often the most cost effective venue option as you won’t pay for venue hire, only for food and beverages. You’re free to do things your way at a home wedding, and could save money by hiring the caterer of your choice and stocking your own bar. It can nevertheless end up being quite costly in the long run once you take all the extras into account, such as cutlery, crockery and linen, tables and chairs, and probably a tent or marquee, lighting, generators, portable toilets and flooring.

SAYSHA BAKER

23

VENUES

In addition, you may have to supervise the set-up of equipment, organise parking for all the guests, and clean up when it’s all over. There are also a number of non-traditional venues to be found, such as art galleries, barns, beaches, boats and hired halls. If you’d prefer something outdoors, KwaZulu-Natal has a huge variety of beautiful spots for you to pitch a tent or marquee, giving you endless flexibility regarding décor and styling. Although romantic and scenic, al fresco weddings can nevertheless be a lot of work to organise. Take into account things like the privacy of your location and competition from the elements, such as sun, heat, rain or insects. Accessibility and parking facilities should also be considered. CONSIDER THE ELEMENTS Also take the weather and the time of year into account when deciding on where to host your reception. While Durban and the coast enjoy wonderful weather all year round, with glorious, long summer days, there is also the chance of rain and humidity during the warmer months, so bear that in mind if you’re planning on celebrating al fresco. Conversely, the subtropical coastal areas experience warm and dry winters: even during the coldest months the average maximum temperature rises to 23°C during the day and rarely drops below 10°C at night. In the Drakensberg and KwaZulu-Natal Midlands the weather is much more temperate. Mild winter days are followed by cold nights and the possibility of snow between July and September. During summer the days are warm and generally sunny, although afternoon thundershowers are common. A bushveld wedding in Zululand or the Elephant Coast is usually more pleasant in the cooler months, between May and October, with January being the wettest month: the average daytime temperature in January is 28˚C, while in July it is 22˚C.

LOCATIONS IN KWAZULU-NATAL The seaside playground of KwaZulu-Natal is bounded by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean to the east and the Drakensberg range to the west. In between beach and berg lie the Midlands, while further north there are historic battlefields and world-renowned game reserves. East meets west in the cosmopolitan city and tourist capital of Durban, the cultural melting pot of the Zulu Kingdom. Durban, or ‘eThekwini’ as it is also known, boasts colourful markets, oriental bazaars and modern shopping malls, golden beaches and water sports, as well as top-class hotels, restaurants and casinos, and attractions such as the Botanical Gardens, uShaka Marine World and Valley of 1000 Hills. Some forty minutes northwest of Durban is the town of Pietermaritzburg, beyond which are the green hills of the Midlands, where the crisp climate and crystal clear air offer a refreshing respite from the coastal humidity. Venture further inland to witness one of the great natural spectacles of the African continent, the uKhahlamba Drakensberg mountain range, which extends some 200 kilometres from north to south, rising to heights of over 3 400 metres. The tropical paradise of the South Coast, which stretches from Port Edward up to Scottburgh, and includes the holiday towns of Margate, Southbroom and Pennington, is known for its beaches and golf courses, annual Sardine Run, and Oribi Gorge nature reserve. From Durban, a sun-drenched coastline extends through the North Coast’s premier holiday resorts of Umhlanga, Ballito and Zinkwazi, and along the unspoilt Elephant Coast to Sodwana and Kosi Bay in the north. This is the site of the iSimangaliso Wetlands Park, a marine treasure trove and World Heritage Site with whales, dolphins, turtles, elephants and rhinos.

Travelling inland through indigenous coastal forests and thornveld plains teeming with wildlife are the famed game reserves of Zululand, including the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Reserve, which was once the hunting ground of Zulu kings like Shaka and Dingiswayo. Zululand and the Battlefields area of northern KwaZulu-Natal was also the site of military conflicts between British, Boer and Zulu armies. These areas encompass the towns of Ulundi, Melmoth and Eshowe, Vryheid, Utrecht, Dundee and Ladysmith, and legendary battles such as Isandlwana, Rorke’s Drift and Spioenkop. DESTINATION WEDDINGS Another option is the destination wedding. With the exception of the venue’s online photo gallery and a possible ‘virtual tour’, you probably won’t be able to scope out the location and grounds yourself before you get there. While some brides might find this a bit unnerving, remember that destination weddings can produce some of the most relaxed and fun-filled celebrations, provided you ask the right questions and find out all the finer details beforehand. When you contact the venue, ask whether they have a dedicated wedding planner on site, and if they can be contacted via email. This will make the logistics of planning your wedding much easier! Also establish exactly what services the wedding coordinator will provide, and whether there is a fee. Find out what reception and ceremony areas are available, how many guests each can accommodate, and whether they are air-conditioned. Also ask the manager to email you a layout of each, including pictures. If you’d like to have a wedding on the beach, will this be possible? If travelling outside South Africa, it’s also vital that you find out what the legal obligations are for a wedding in your destination of choice, and what paperwork is required.

And we must mention the luxury tented accommodation that provided true safari ambiance, with every comfort catered for, including a spacious dressing room, en-suite bathroom and private sundeck, a great place for us to to rejuvenate and unwind.” Contact Nicolien Pieterse: Tel: 035 562 2319 Email: reservations@falaza.co.za www.falaza.co.za 50

CHOOSING A PHOTOGRAPHER FOR YOUR WEDDING IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT DECISIONS YOU WILL MAKE IN THE COMING MONTHS. Selecting an artist that will capture and create images of the highest quality will ensure the wondrous memories and the true essence of your special day can be relived for generations to come. Your wedding promises to be one of the defining moments to cherish in your life, and this raw emotion needs to be preserved. As the roses wilt and the dress collects dust, your photographs will serve as the only reminder of what transpired on that day: the most important day of your life.

The first step in the process of selecting the right photographer is to cover all your bases by doing some research. Try browsing through some wedding magazines and online wedding directories for a few reputable photographers. The proof really is in the pudding when it comes to photography, so be sure to browse through as many portfolios as possible. Every photographer shoots with a distinct style, which reflects in the look and feel of the images they produce. It is important to decide whether a particular photographer’s work speaks to you and if you enjoy their photographic style. Wedding photographers often have set packages offering a variety of products and services, along with their photographic time. Enquire with the photographer about their Wedding Packages and be sure to explore the various options available to you. Your Wedding Album, along with your precious memories, will have to stand the test of time, so it is imperative to ensure the photographer’s albums are of the highest quality. Be sure to meet with your photographer in person prior to your special day! Your wedding photographer will spend more time with you on your wedding day than anyone else, so it is important to get to know them, deciding on whether you like their personality. This also offers the photographer the opportunity to get to know a bit more about you and your partner, a crucial part of his or her process that will inevitably affect the end product. Meeting with your photographer will allow you to review their albums and products in person, so you can determine whether they meet your requirements.

ALL THROUGH STUART’S DIVERSE LIFE HE HAS ALWAYS HAD A LOVE OF VISUAL THINGS AND AS HE SAYS ‘HAD A CAMERA IN HAND’. He dabbled in photographic portfolios whilst in London, but it was on his return to South Africa and his introduction to a digital camera that ‘opened up a whole new world’ to him and he was hooked more than ever before. The defining moment however was when he ‘meet the love of his life’... it turned what has started as a passion that fed his soul to a career capturing the special memories of other couples. Says Stuart ‘I value my blessing everyday... a wedding is a once off important occasion and so is my approach to it’

Ask your photographer about their turnaround times in terms of editing and post-production. How long will they take to show you a preview? How long will it take before you can see all of the images? Ask them whether you have a say in the selection of images that will eventually go into your wedding album, and see if they have a proofing system that will allow you to review and modify your album prior to print. At the end of the day, your satisfaction is priority one! Once you have considered all of these aspects and decided on your preferred photographer, ensure that you secure your wedding date with them as soon as possible. Some photographers are booked more than a year in advance; so locking the date in promptly is vital. Consult your photographer with regards to the time schedule of your wedding day. The best time for creative photography is about an hour before sunset, so by structuring your day carefully, you will allow your photographer to shoot in the best possible light. It is also important to give your photographer the creative freedom that they need to take the best possible images on your day. You chose your photographer because you love their work, so trust them to work their magic! EDITORIAL COURTESY MATT MASSON

PHOTOGRAPHY

DRIES ERASMUS Dries started as a photographer at the age of 19 at Potchefstroom University when joining the student newspaper Die Wapad, and quickly climbed the ranks becoming the chief photographer and having the opportunity to shoot everything from sports to formal events. Fresh out of University he joined the SANDF as a private and a few months later joined the permanent force becoming the first official photographer of the SA Military Health Service. Once again he had the opportunity to shoot a variety of subjects and substitute his very small salary with wedding and events photography. Dries then decided to leave the corporate communication field and went on to study Information Technology, putting his camera ‘down’ for a few years... what he didn’t realise is that the passion that had started in his youth would not let up and in 2011 picked up the camera once again. This time his photographic business, CLASSIK PORTRAITS, took off and the passion that had got him started had him quickly getting back into the swing of things capturing everything from sports events to weddings. The Fairy Tale Romance of Leslie & Niki MATT MASSON PHOTOGRAPHY

PHOTOGRAPHY MATT MASSON HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF CAPTURING THE SPECIAL MOMENTS OF LESLIE AND NIKI’S WEDDING ON THE 25 JANUARY 2014. THEY SAID THEIR VOWS AT OUR LADY OF FATIMA CATHOLIC CHURCH IN DURBAN NORTH AND HELD THEIR RECEPTION INSIDE THE USHAKA MARINE WORLD AQUARIUM. Having heard about the tall, dark and handsome Les, Nix was adamant not to fall for his charms (being certain that any man who had such a fuss made about him had to have an ego to match).

Over the next few months, group emails turned into emails between just Les and Nix (being the only two who truly understood the other’s humour which included parody fanaticism for Justin Bieber). A friendship grew, where good and bad days at work were ended with runs along the beach front, just the two of them, sharing the ups and downs of the day. Friendship

On the morning of Christmas Eve, Nix was on the brink of wiping out any thought of a romantic relationship with Les when she received a call. He was eager to see her to give her a Christmas gift (which turned out to be a VERY large Justin Bieber poster). Nix’s heart sunk as she explained that she was fully booked doing Christmas duty at the St. Thomas Home for Children and then gift wrapping for Reach for a Dream Foundation. Les then offered to join her and duly helped out by playing with the kids and holding the sellotape for wrapping. Yes this may sound a bit Mills and Booney but it’s the truth)… and on Christmas Day it became official (when Nix inadvertently and without thinking stole a kiss). In February 2012 Les designed an engagement ring and had it custom made by Diamond Source in Johannesburg. Les’ dad collected the ring and brought it to Durban in early March. Airport Security was delighted when his dad presented the ring, refusing to allow it through the x-ray machine – who doesn’t enjoy a good love story? 64

PHOTOGRAPHY On 13 March 2013 Les visited Nix’s parents and asked for permission to marry her. He received an exuberant and resounding yes. After over 2 years of dating, on 15 March 2013, Les planned the ultimate weekend away. Les convinced Nix to take the afternoon off and whisked her off to the Umhlanga beach for a romantic picnic, then back to the house where Les had laid a variety of outfits for Nix for the perfect weekend away. With a quick packing of bags, Les whisked Nix off to Salt Rock (Northern KZN) to a boutique hotel. Upon arrival Les realised that he had left his dress pants and shirt at the house (his outfit for the proposal!). So a quick trip to Ballito meant Les had a new outfit for the proposal. All the while Nix had no clue what was to follow. After a romantic champagne dinner (where Les originally planned to propose), they returned to the room. Moments after Nix removed her shoes (highly appropriate as Nix is a bit of a hippy when it comes to wearing shoes); Les got down on one knee and proposed… READ MORE OF LES & NIX’S STORY Contact Matt Masson Photography: Cell: 083 287 1278 Email: info@mattmasson.co.za www.mattmasson.co.za 65

WEDDING VIDEOGRAPHY HAS PROGRESSED IN LEAPS AND BOUNDS IN THE PAST DECADE, FROM SMALL, MOBILE DIGITAL CAMERAS CAPABLE OF FILMING IN LOW LIGHT SITUATIONS AND OFFERING DRAMATICALLY IMPROVED IMAGE QUALITY, TO INNOVATIVE NARRATIVE FORMATS, CREATIVE EFFECTS AND SLICK POST-PRODUCTION CAPABILITIES. More recently, high-definition (HD) video technology, Blu-ray discs, DSLR cameras, cutting-edge computer software and commercial production equipment such as Steadicam units have advanced the industry even further. You could opt for the cinematic approach, where the video of your day is captured and edited for dramatic effect and mood, just like a movie. Or you may prefer a storytelling video that relies on sound bites, usually from the bride and groom, recorded before, during or after the wedding. Other styles encompass Documentary, Short Form (edited to less than 60 minutes) and Traditional (two to three hours, only slightly edited). Videographers may also offer a wedding trailer, lasting between three and five minutes, which you’re able to upload to YouTube, Twitter or Facebook and share far and wide with friends and family. A novel pre-wedding idea is to make a video of the engagement proposal as well!

One of the top tips is to choose a beautiful venue. A charming country hotel or themed restaurant will be easier to decorate than a plain function room or marquee. Then, you’ll need to check how much of the décor your venue is able to supply, and how much you’ll have to hire. These days, professional hiring companies supply an amazing array of stylish furnishings and themed décor. THEMES AND COLOUR SCHEMES Different themes lend themselves to different colour schemes: a garden wedding might feature delicate florals and pastels against a lush green backdrop, while a vintage wedding could incorporate period prints and bold colours offset with silver or gold detailing, not to mention a sprinkling of 1930s era glamour. The ‘country chic’ or ‘rustic’ wedding in fresh shades of blue, green or yellow is also very popular at present. Feature details here include apple crates, antique tablecloths and mismatched china. The seaside is another favourite, lending itself to pale blue or turquoise paired with neutrals such as sand, gold, silver or chalky pink. Alternatively, make your reception into a celebration of colour with the latest décor trends: origami flowers, paper lanterns and pom-poms, festoon lighting and swags of streamers. You could also look to the season for inspiration. Spring suggests fresh pastels, while summer’s lush vegetation and abundant blooms might prompt tropical or beach themes infused with bold, dramatic hues. Favourite autumn colours include the mellow tones of amber, russet, green and cream. While coastal winters are pleasantly cool and dry, the colder weather inland could inspire a romantic highland theme with roaring log fires, candle-lit tables and soaring mountain scenery. This is also the perfect time for a bushveld wedding; perhaps colonial elegance

ADDING A SPLASH OF COLOUR AND DECORATIVE DETAIL TO THE WEDDING DAY DÉCOR NOT TO MENTION THE BRIDE’S GORGEOUS GOWN - FLOWERS ARE A HUGELY IMPORTANT ASPECT OF THE OVERALL THEME AND COLOUR SCHEME. Make your choices memorable for all the right reasons, selecting blooms that you love to provide the perfect finishing touches to this very special day. Take into account a flower’s colour, perfume, foliage, texture and durability, consulting a good florist for advice on seasonal selections and tricks of the trade.

Some popular varieties include lilies, irises, orchids and roses, or local choices such as Proteas and gerberas. Hot pinks or brightly hued corals look great at a summer wedding, while yellow and pastels suit springtime. Texture can be created through succulents, grasses and berries.

BOUQUETS AND BUTTONHOLES Your bridal bouquet needs to be designed to complement your wedding gown and theme. Contemporary colour schemes may be monochromatic or display shaded tones of the same colour. The cascade style is back in vogue, with bunches of roses, tulips and ranunculas, or a luscious combination of avalanche roses, brunia, echeveria, peonies, astrantia and hydrangeas in an elegant and timeless white and green palette. The pink hues of our local King Protea are also striking. Soften the effect by including other flowers like roses and fynbos. While the bouquet will set the theme for attendants’ flowers, these days your bridesmaids are free to personalise their blooms. Flower girls could wear flowers in their hair or hold a foliage wand or a simple bunch of flowers. Instead of the ubiquitous floral buttonhole, grooms might choose to add unusual elements such as ferns, moss and herbs, or opt for unconventional materials such as paper, felt or fabric flowers with crystals and beads. ARTFUL ARRANGEMENTS At the wedding ceremony there could be archways garlanded with flowers or gently trailing ferns, mass arrangements set on pedestals, particularly surrounding the altar, and posies fastened to individual chairs or pew ends. Citrus garlands comprising limes, lemons or oranges on the stem are a contemporary choice. Centrepieces could consist of simple bunches of meadow flowers, extravagant arrangements on candelabra stands, or a single dramatic bloom in a vintage vase. Current trends emphasise the rustic and unusual, such as colourful bottles and jam jars, silver jugs and china teapots, or even a covered terrarium centrepiece made from a bell jar or glass vase.

“LET US DANCE IN THE SUN, WEARING WILD FLOWERS IN YOUR HAIR” Your floral choices reflect the heart and soul of your marriage and your life together as a couple. We can make those dreams and aspirations come true and leave you with memories of a perfect day. The menu you choose should feature a wide range of different tastes, satisfying your personal preferences as well as providing guests with food that they’re comfortable with. Look for menus that work well with the time of year; for example, light, fresh dishes in spring and summer and heartier, more robust meals in autumn and winter. FOODIE FAVOURITES Flavours of the Mediterranean are still tops when it comes to catering, in keeping with the focus on ethnic cuisine. However, traditional favourites such as Italian and Greek food are being given a run for their money by Middle Eastern tastes from regions like Morocco, Turkey and Israel. Spicy food is another ‘hot’ choice in 2014, with Korean, Japanese and Latin American inspired menus proving very popular. Another idea is to put a menu together that reflects the different backgrounds of the bride and groom, or particular dishes that are of special significance to them. In addition to having a wedding cake, many couples are now opting for a dessert station as well. This could showcase anything from a milkshake or gelato bar to custom-made crepes or a decadent chocolate fondue. Plated sweets could comprise mini cheese platters, cherry pies, cheese cakes or almond tarts, and desserts with exciting flavour combinations, such as apricot and basil or salted caramel.

TIERS OF JOY The wedding cake has long played a symbolic role in Western culture. In the Roman Empire, the ‘cake’ was a loaf of bread that the groom broke over the bride’s head to signify his dominance over her. Today, it’s all about mutual love and respect. The action of the bride and groom cutting the cake represents their first joint task in married life, while the gesture of feeding cake to one another denotes commitment and devotion. LIQUID REFRESHMENTS Guests are traditionally given a drink or arrival, such as a glass of rum punch, champagne or a Pimms cocktail. There should be both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages available. At the table, it is standard to provide white and red wine (usually a 50-50 split, although this depends on the season and time of day), as well as still and sparkling water, and a bottle of champagne or sparkling wine for toasts. The trend this year is for guests to toast the happy couple with Prosecco or pink champagne! While an open bar will take up approximately 15 percent of the total wedding budget, this figure could drop to as little as 5 percent if you’re limiting drinks to beer, wine and a signature cocktail, or supplying alcohol and other beverages yourself. If opting for a cash bar, it’s still a good idea to put a set amount towards wine and beer, and include a complimentary welcome drink. Two bartenders and three servers are recommended for every 120 guests.

While traditional choices include Wagner’s ‘Bridal Chorus’ (often called ‘Here Comes the Bride’) and Mendelssohn’s ‘Wedding March’, you could also opt for a more modern piece, such as Pachelbel’s ‘Canon in D’. An emerging trend is to request contemporary tunes rearranged for the harp or other instrument, allowing couples to choose music they love that still sounds appropriate for the occasion.

From the uplifting ceremony right through to the celebrations that follow, music leaves you with sweet memories to cherish. For this reason, don’t consign the planning of your wedding music and entertainment to the bottom of your to-do list.

81

MUSIC

CHOOSING YOUR MUSICIANS OR DJ Before deciding on the type of music you’d like at your ceremony and reception, have a look at how much room is available at the respective venues. Does the church have enough space for a string quartet or just a pianist or harpist? Is the reception hall sufficient for a big band or only a DJ? Also check whether there are specific rules about the type of music that’s allowed. Begin your search through referrals; ask friends or family members, and obtain recommendations from venue managers. Get references from your prospective musicians, who should be happy to provide you with endorsements from former clients. Once you’ve narrowed the list down, listen to a demo CD or DVD, or visit their website and play a video or audio clip of their music. Tips for the best wedding music on a tight budget include: * Hiring a talented amateur band instead of the professionals * Not holding your wedding during peak season or on a Saturday * Hiring musicians to play for a limited period only, opting for prerecorded classical or contemporary sounds for the rest of the reception If opting for a DJ instead of a musician, find a professional who is technically proficient, has an excellent knowledge of music and a good selection of different types of genres. Find out what their specialty is and if they are familiar with your favourite style of music. It also helps if you strike up a good rapport with your prospective DJ, and find them easy to get along with. Before signing the contract, make sure your DJ has a contingency plan in the event of equipment failure or ill-health.

A dental appointment - maybe not something everyone considers when preparing for their special day, but a visit that could change not only your wedding day, but also your love to smile for the rest of your life. Dr Thinus van Niekerk heads THE COSMETIC AND DENTAL EMPORIUM in Ballito and soon also the new branch in Umhlanga Ridge. He primarily focuses on reconstructive dentistry with highly aesthetic outcomes and makes use of various disciplines such as orthodontics, implantology and immediate ceramic restorations. In his words they strive to achieve one objective alone and that is “to see patients adopt a Love to Smile”. He explains that a smile is at the forefront of every social interaction and plays a significant role in cultivating a positive projected self-image. 85

As a soon-to-be-married man he understands the stress caused by preparing for this special occasion and thus urges couples to have this discussion with their dentists long before their vows are written. Some cases are complex, explains Dr van Niekerk, but most cases involve a good cleaning and a couple’s teethwhitening session. Other popular treatments include the 6-month smile make-over, the immediate smile make-over and the Optiphi Skin Rejuvenation facials and peels. All of these minor treatments will accentuate your unique facial features and help you look your best for your wedding day. HAIR & BEAUTY

Top-to-toe bridal beauty begins months before the wedding with a comprehensive health and fitness routine, which should include a sensible diet and exercise plan as well as the correct creams and treatments for your skin type. Closer to the wedding day, a beauty spa visit for that essential manicure, pedicure, body massage and facial will leave you radiant as well as feeling relaxed and stress-free. Your wedding hairstyle has a huge impact on your overall bridal look. The best hairdos are those which suit the bride’s hair type as well as her face shape. No matter what style you may have set your sights on, it’s advisable not to fight what nature gave you - straight hair is unlikely to hold a very curly look for the duration of the ceremony and reception, and February humidity will soon undo the work of a straightening iron on curly hair. GET GORGEOUS While staying-power is important, bridal make-up should be all about enhancing your natural look rather than covering anything up. A good make-up artist will be able to create a more polished version of your existing look. However, if you do want to try out something a bit adventurous, then experiment with a new style well ahead of time, taking photographs of the finished product to see whether you like the end result. If you’ve decided to do your own make-up, there are a few tricks of the trade you should learn. Apply products in natural light if possible, and remember to blend your foundation and blusher well, as the camera will show up any lines. Sweep some bronzing powder across your chest and neck so your face doesn’t look a different colour to the rest of your body. Don’t use foundation too near your gown’s neckline as it could end up staining the dress. Opt for DIONNE SWART

waterproof mascara and navy blue or charcoal eyeliner.

HAIR & BEAUTY

Choose a bright lip colour, and carry it with you on the day - along with a handy powder compact and mirror - in case you need a touch-up. LOOKS FOR LOCKS Stylish and smart, the classic up-do creates a timeless look and works well if you’re wearing a veil. The elegant chignon is the preferred choice for a particularly glamorous and sophisticated theme. At the other end of the scale, keep it short, snappy and very contemporary with a sleek bob or a pixie crop, both of which are great with a single clip, flower or Alice band. Long, straight hair is good for an ultra-sleek do. Wear it down and complete the look with a pretty garland or crown. Alternatively, sport a centre parting and wear either a low bun at the nape of your neck or a French twist, embellishing it with a detailed headband and veil. Straight-haired brides who have their hearts set on curls should keep them big and loose. Long hair with large sculpted waves or tousled curls secured with a simple clip goes beautifully with a strapless dress. Top stylists advise playing up natural curls, which will benefit from frizz-minimising styling products and a few strategically placed clips or pins. Thick hair can be worn up or down: flaunt your luxuriant locks by twisting them into a semi up-do, or wear a simple French plait. Braids look lovely with a lacy wedding dress, and particularly suit casual, Bohemian brides.

TRANSPORT SEAN BAKER

YOUR CHOICE IN WEDDING DAY WHEELS MIGHT BE A GLAMOROUS STRETCH LIMO, A SLEEK AND SOPHISTICATED ROLLS ROYCE OR A SNAPPY RED SPORTS CAR. Alternatively, get creative and pick a ride that truly reflects your unique style, such as a hippie-era kombi or a motorbike! If you don’t have too far to travel between the ceremony and reception, then go for a more unusual form of transport; perhaps a horse and carriage, tandem bicycle or even a tractor! An eco-friendly theme might call for a hybrid car or scooter, or even a gentle stroll if the venues are really close. No matter which mode of wedding transport you decide on, bear in mind that it will probably also be used as a backdrop in some of the wedding photographs. Ensure its colour complements that of the bridal party and bouquets, and don’t forget about decorative items, such as ribbon. Hire transport well in advance, and have vehicles checked beforehand to ensure a smooth and stress-free drive on the day. Remember to include bridesmaids, groomsmen and the bride’s parents when calculating how many vehicles you’ll need.

BRIDAL WEAR JOANELLE MEYER

A FABULOUS WEDDING GOWN IS THE CENTREPIECE OF A FAIRY-TALE WEDDING. EVERY BRIDE WANTS HER WEDDING DRESS TO BE A SHOWSTOPPER. HOWEVER, BEFORE YOU BEGIN LOOKING FOR THE DRESS OF YOUR DREAMS, DO A LITTLE RESEARCH VIA WEDDING MAGAZINES AS WELL AS INTERNET SITES TO BRUSH UP ON CURRENT TRENDS AND BUZZWORDS IN THE BRIDAL FASHION INDUSTRY.

91

BRIDAL WEAR

BRIDAL GOWN GUIDE One of the first rules in finding the dress is to take your time. Have fun trying on different types of dresses, remembering to sample a choice of styles to find out what works best for you. While bridal boutiques stock a huge variety of off-the-peg gowns to suit any figure and budget, many brides feel it’s important to have a oneof-a-kind, custom-made wedding dress. However, if you choose to follow this route, then don’t procrastinate for too long as designer dresses can take up to eight months to be delivered! When visiting a bridal shop, be aware that although an outfit may have no ‘hanger appeal’, it could look very different when you try it on. You might like one that draws attention to your best feature (for example, your shoulders, arms or waist) while de-emphasising those aspects that you find less desirable. And don’t simply pick out a dress that your girlfriends will love keep your fiancé in mind too. Chances are he doesn’t care a bit about the latest fashions, and would rather see you in something that shows you off to your best advantage. Think you’ve found the one? Try moving about in it: walk, dance, sit down and breathe deeply. You’ll be wearing the dress all day, so comfort is a key consideration. Those in the know suggest taking photographs of the dresses you try on; not just from the front, but from a variety of angles to get the total effect. Also look at how the fabric appears in photos, as some fabrics - while appearing gorgeous to the naked eye - may look a lot different in pictures. CATWALK CUES One of the signature features of bridal fashion in 2014 is the neckline, which sparkles with unique detailing in crystals, beads and lacy embroidery. When it comes to colour palettes, muted shades of pink such as blush, nude and peach are contemporary choices which are also extremely flattering. Current looks also focus on interesting and unusual headgear, from large floral fascinators to hats, bows, nets and more. Another emerging trend is the ‘trash-the-dress’ backlash, with brides opting for more conventional wedding portraiture.

THE GROOM

HEATHER FITCHET

GOOD GROOMING Grooms can choose between hiring a suit and having their wedding day clothing tailor-made. While basic black is a safe choice, other colours such as grey and navy blue are also gaining popularity. At a formal or semi-formal evening wedding, the groom could wear a classic dinner suit or tuxedo, with a single or double-breasted jacket, and accessories such as a formal dress shirt and necktie with vest or cummerbund. White tie, which is also known as evening dress or top hat and tails, is the most formal type of clothing, and usually comprises a black dress coat, white bow tie, white waistcoat and wing collar shirt. Modern grooms might like to ditch the traditional look and explore their creative side! For a less-formal beach wedding, choose a lightcoloured linen suit, and instead of a floral boutonnière, opt for a handstitched lapel badge. Bow ties are currently scoring points over the conventional tie or cravat, and colourful suspenders can add a quirky, personal element. Retro looks are also in fashion: consider two-toned brogues, an Edwardian frock coat or a 70s inspired velvet jacket.

NEW TRENDS HEATHER FITCHET

COLOUR PALETTES

like bangles, this modern look is the latest word in wedding fashion. Alternatively, brides could start with one band and add more at subsequent wedding anniversaries!

Blue - especially navy and royal blue - is a signature colour for 2014. Complement it with muted hues of lime green, pink or buttercup yellow, adding neutral tints of grey as a backdrop. Combinations of ivory, blush and champagne are romantic yet sophisticated, as are soft washes of green, peach and pink, or even blush with pale robin egg blue. Grey continues to be popular, and blends stylishly with most colours, including mint green, lavender and plum. Neutral tones of brown and taupe also work well when paired with colours such as cool khaki or powder blue. Add a glamorous accent to neutrals or pastels with a hint of sparkle. A brighter palette could include coral and shades of blue-green, or aqua alongside yellow and pink.

FEISTY FLORALS Flowers are not restricted to traditional bridal arrangements and bouquets this year, but adorn every aspect of wedding fashion. From masses of real blooms, floral ceremony arches and intricate reception installations to floral motifs used in the décor, the dress, cakes, invitations and more. Oversized bouquets are big news, especially for those romantically inclined or 1940s inspired themes, while Bohemian brides could wear garlands of flowers in their hair. EARTHY CHARM

NO PHONE ZONES

Weddings go back to nature, with receptions taking place in rustic settings such as an old barn or canvas tent, where unusual items or props might include hay bales and tractors and table settings sport mismatched crockery and jam jars filled with simple flower arrangements. The garden is another popular setting for nuptial celebrations, with a backdrop of luxuriant greenery and flowerbedecked glass lanterns hanging from trees.

Tired of the barrage of wedding videos and pictures on Facebook and Twitter taken by mobile phone wielding guests - not to mention the spectacle of guests glued to their smart phones throughout the day - some couples are choosing to celebrate their wedding free of social media. You could include a note to this effect on the programme or in your invitations, requesting that photos not be taken during the ceremony or other intimate moments, or even ask guests to leave their phones at the door!

ECO WEDDINGS Regard for the environment is a trend that can be applied to all elements of your wedding celebration, from the invitations to the dress and even the cake. Many couples already recycle their paper, plastic, glass and tin, shop for organic, locally-produced food and conserve energy and water wherever possible, so the next step is to extend these earth-conscious values to wedding planning! Part of going green involves downsizing, simplifying and sourcing local products wherever possible so that your wedding doesn’t weigh heavily on the environment or create a big carbon footprint. For example, you could use a succulent like Echeveria for the table décor and then re-pot it afterwards. Or put little plants inside condensed milk tins and give them to your guests as favours. The concept of shunning excess and over-consumption should also ring true for couples who have a limited wedding budget or simply want to set money aside for another goal, such as purchasing a home.

WHIMSY AND ROMANCE Vintage weddings, along with their casual and quirky cousin the Bohemian wedding, are still going strong. While the Gatsby theme might be a tad last-year, there are many other ways to give your big day a vintage feel. For a start, you don’t have to pick one particular historical era; choose whatever appeals to your sense of style, from long wedding veils and lacy dresses to antique vases and vintage frames. The glamour and glitz of Hollywood in the 30s and 40s is yet another inspiring era: think gilt-edged glassware and crockery, crystal candelabra and sassy swing bands. SIMPLY STACKABLE Borrowing from a trend which has swept contemporary jewellery design, stackable wedding bands encompass an eclectic mix of metals and stones. With three or four rings worn next to one another 98

JEWELLERY STUART DODS

GRACIOUS AND ELEGANT, THE VINTAGE LOOK IS ONE OF THE HOTTEST CONTEMPORARY TRENDS IN WEDDING RINGS AND JEWELLERY. IT’S ALL IN THE DETAIL, WITH TINY MICRO-SET DIAMONDS, DELICATE ENGRAVING AND SUBTLE MILLEGRAIN BEADING.

There’s nothing understated about bridal jewellery this season, think big and bold with multi-coloured stones set in yellow gold, or sparkling crystals with silver or platinum metals. Fabulous floral motifs are also popular in necklaces and earrings. SET IN STONE

Gemstones come in alluring shapes such as the stepped, squarecut ‘Asscher’ with its cropped corners, and the circular old European cut favoured in the 1800s which was a forerunner of the modern round brilliant cut.

Engagement rings come in different styles and settings, from solitaire to multi-stone, cluster and random-set. While a modern look might call for a tension setting, a four-prong setting is a timeless classic, and a vintage ring would shine in a filigreed setting. The thickness and height of the band depends on the stone size and setting, and should be in proportion to your finger size. An emerald or marquise shaped stone would look good on a long-fingered bride, while brilliant or princess would suit those with shorter fingers.

Select a style of ring to complement your personality and interests. Romantic brides could choose a pink-toned heart-shaped diamond set in rose or white gold, while active brides might prefer a practical, flush-mount setting that will protect the gem and prevent snagging. An exotic rose-cut diamond set in yellow gold could be perfect for a bohemian bride. Trendy brides can add some bling to their look with a fancy yellow diamond surrounded by a multitude of smaller sparklers and set in a diamond-covered band. A platinum band with a lustrous bezel-set stone is a minimalist, modern classic.

After the ever-fashionable diamond, sapphires and rubies are the next most popular stone because they are harder than other precious gems. Semi-precious jewels tend to be softer and are more prone to damage. Shapes include brilliant (round), pear (tear-shaped), princess (square), emerald (rectangular) and marquise (an elongated oval), as well as oval and heart-shaped.

It’s better not to book an early departure if you’re leaving the morning after the wedding; after all, you don’t want to spend the first day of your honeymoon travelling on planes, trains or boats while you’re feeling a little off-colour. However, if there’s absolutely no alternative, then try to pack your suitcase a few days before the wedding. And after making sure you have essentials such as passports, currency, cameras, phones and medication safely stowed away, don’t stress too much about leaving things behind ... most destinations will be able to provide you with toothbrushes and suntan lotion!

According to the South African Marriage Act, the legal part of the ceremony must take place indoors in the presence of at least two witnesses, and the entrance to the venue must be open.

Most religions, including Judaism, Islam and Hinduism, see marriage as a sacred duty and an important facet of spiritual life. The convention of the ‘white wedding’, which is common to both Christians and Jews, has been adopted by many Zulu and Xhosa couples, who may hold a Western wedding service in addition to traditional rituals which honour the ancestors. Customary Zulu marriage proposals are accompanied by ‘lobola’ or ‘bride price’, which refers to payment made by the groom’s family to the bride’s family. While this was once made in the form of cattle, today cash is usually considered acceptable. The wedding reception takes place over several days and involves the wider community in a celebration of feasting, dancing and singing.

PROTOCOL THE GUEST LIST and are quite friendly with most of your co-workers, it’s advisable to invite everyone in the office. However, if your workplace is large then it might be preferable to invite nobody at all, or just one or two of your closest friends.

Before compiling a guest list, work out how many people you’re able to invite to your wedding. This will be determined by factors such as your budget and the size of your wedding venue. While inviting your closest friends and relatives to your special day may appear a fairly easy task at the outset, it can become an etiquette minefield,

Deciding which relatives to invite can be tricky when you have a large family and don’t see much of the more far-flung branches of the family tree! It’s nonetheless hard to exclude specific individuals or groups from your guest list. While basic etiquette dictates that you include siblings, parents and grandparents, does this extend to stepparents and step-siblings, uncles, aunts and first cousins as well?

particularly in the case of smaller weddings. Start by writing down the must-haves, such as immediate family members, close relatives and attendants. Thereafter, the bride and groom could each jot down the names of their friends, keeping their respective lists roughly the same length, followed by a list of their mutual friends. Give your parents some input, especially if they are making a financial contribution to the wedding, as they may want to include other family members as well as colleagues and friends. If you are paying for the wedding yourself and are strapped for cash, it’s quite acceptable to ask your parents to pay for any additional guests they want to invite. When it comes to work colleagues, if you work for a small company

You’re least likely to hurt someone’s feelings by omitting a whole category of relatives. Perhaps explain that because the venue is small you’re not able to invite cousins from either the groom’s or bride’s side of the family. You could also specify that only adults are being invited, stating ‘Regrettably, no children’ on the wedding invitation. Unmarried friends are generally not a ‘plus-one’ unless they are engaged to or living with someone. Another option is to keep a back-up ‘B’ list of people to invite if any of those on the ‘A’ list decline!
