WELCOME

TO THE CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR ENGAGEMENT, AND WELCOME TO THE SIXTH EDITION OF YOUR WEDDING PLANNER! WE ARE THRILLED TO BE A PART OF YOUR WEDDING PREPARATIONS AND TO PROVIDE YOU WITH THE RESOURCES AND ESSENTIAL ADVICE THAT WILL MAKE THE JOURNEY TO YOUR SPECIAL DAY GO AS SMOOTHLY AS POSSIBLE. YOUR WEDDING PLANNER has lots of inspiration for bridesto-be, especially those getting married in the beautiful province of KwaZulu-Natal, where magical destinations range from city hotels and beach resorts, to country estates, bushveld lodges and magnificent mountain getaways. Brides and grooms can choose from sophisticated venues and boutique hotels in Durban and Pietermaritzburg, or explore the many venues – both grand and more intimate – on the North and South coasts, as well as country-style receptions in the Midlands and Drakensberg, safari-type weddings in Zululand, and eco-lodges on the Elephant Coast. Whether your perfect venue lies in a location close to your heart or at an exciting new destination, we hope that you’ll find just the right place to host the ceremony and reception of your dreams.

As soon as you and your partner have sealed your engagement, consider the bigger picture and start asking yourselves some important questions. You already know who your special someone is, but have you thought about the ‘what’, ‘when’, ‘where’ and ‘how’ of your big day? Allow yourself to dream a little, creating an image of your fantasy wedding in your head. What excites you and your partner? Big and bold or cosy and intimate? Glitzy and glamorous or simple and eco-friendly? Urban chic or romantic and Bohemian? Get some inspiration on themes and décor on page 38. When will you say ‘I do’? Think about the season and your wedding theme, as well as practical considerations such as taking time off work and whether your chosen date is on a long weekend or during the holidays: some venues and service providers book up well in advance and may be more expensive at those times. Where is the perfect place for your wedding celebration? Town or country? Near or far? Indoor or al fresco? From boutique hotels and 5-star accommodation in the city to bushveld locations, sugar plantations, coastal

resorts and mountain manors, we’ve got the best locations in the province covered in our ‘Venues’ guide, starting on page 11. How will you be getting married? Church wedding or civil ceremony? What are the legal requirements? Will you be marrying under the Marriage Act, Customary Marriages Act or Civil Union Act? South African marriages are legally valid in the vast majority of countries, making it even easier for overseas brides and grooms to get married here. Consult the section on ‘Legal Advice’ on page 57. How do you work out a timeline and make sure everything runs according to plan? This issue kicks off with a countdown checklist on page 4 to help you book service providers and schedule appointments. This is followed by a helpful budget planner on page 8. For even more inspiration, look at our website www.yourweddingplannerguide.co.za for a digital copy of the magazine as well as lists of suppliers; or check out our Facebook page @yourweddingplannerguide for the latest information on all things wedding related. HAPPY PLANNING!

OUR COVER STORY

COVER STORY

We are delighted with our front cover photograph, taken by Little Things. This is their story about the photoshoot. Working in the wedding industry we all love the excitement of a wedding day, but occasionally we love getting together with talented service providers to plan a styled shoot, when time allows. This gives us all a chance to showcase fresh ideas that clients haven’t necessarily seen before. Without a restrictive brief each service provider is able to use their creativity to its full extent. We decided to keep the shoot theme and colour palette quite simple so that we showcase everyone’s work in the best possible way. The shoot took place at HARTFORD HOUSE in Mooi River which is just stunning during winter with soft and dreamy light. There were two parts to the shoot so our talented stylists decided to do two separate looks. Designer LAUREN JUDITH-ANNE made a dress that looked like something straight out of a fairytale. Her bridal lingerie, made in a very similar style, has such stunning detailing. Every piece fit our model, KELLY UPFOLD like a dream. We loved that Kelly looked soft and elegant but still empowered. MADIE KRUGER our Hairstylist from CUTTING EDGE decided on a classic curl downstyle for our day look; and a daring upstyle for the afternoon which included some green to match the stunning emerald green and gold cake made by ARABELLA. LEANDRI HATTINGH decided on a bold lip colour and dramatic eyeshadow to make Kelly’s eyes stand out. We kept shooting until well after sunset, because there was just so many photo opportunities that this magnificent venue has to offer.

JEWELLERY

While a brilliant white solitaire is a popular choice for many brides, today the array of unique and non-traditional engagement and wedding rings is simply dazzling! Colourful diamonds remain big news, from fancy pinks and yellows, to dramatic chocolate and black diamonds. Brides are also free to choose other precious stones, such as a rubies, emeralds or sapphires for a vintage effect.

VENA AMORIS

MAKING PEOPLE HAPPY IS OUR SPECIALITY!! Tungsten carbide is the new, most popular metal today for men’s wedding rings. The heavy weight and luxurious finish of a tungsten carbide ring speak of commitment, strength and an everlasting bond. The metal will always maintain its beautiful, scratch-resistant finish, making them the perfect choice for your loved ones wedding ring. At VA-Tungsten, we identified the need within men’s jewellery for a hard wearing, affordable ring that offers durability and sophistication. Men’s wedding rings up to now have been limited to very simple designs, and not much of a selection. Most of the men’s rings available today that are made from expensive, precious metals are all prone to scratches and abrasion, and some of these metals are almost impossible to remove in an emergency.

12 Your Wedding Planner Guide

Tungsten is one of the safest metals on the market and with its unique comfort-fit design, they are not only comfortable to wear, the comfort fit acts as a cushion which helps the ring grip onto your finger. Our hand-picked selection of rings includes black-plating, ceramic and carbon fibre inlays that are fused into the metal, giving you a unique variety of tungsten rings to choose from. Our exclusive range of tungsten rings are a fraction of the price when compared to other precious metal wedding rings, but offers the same feeling of elegance and class. They are modern, bold and above all, strong!

JEWELLERY

For 2017 and 2018, jewellery designers also predict a return to simplicity, with stand-out gems in understated settings reminiscent of a bygone era.

all the rage. And vintage jewellery isn’t just adorning the bride and her entourage, it’s also being used in place of flowers to decorate the cake!

While the halo style is still a favourite, the emphasis has moved to side details, with smaller diamonds flanking instead of encircling the centre stone.

STYLES, STONES AND SETTINGS

Add another dimension to a classic ring with a signature twist. Styles featuring coiled bands, slightly rotated prong placements, and rows of diamonds which twist around the band rather than sitting in a straight line will complement a simple setting. Position an oval-cut gem in an east-west, horizontal setting to make it truly distinctive. Gold will never go out of style, and the pink, feminine glow of rose gold has made a beautiful comeback. Mixed metals add an element of interest. Combine a white gold band with a yellow gold setting, or match prongs to the colour of the stone – rose gold for a pink gem, yellow gold for champagne-coloured diamonds. Naturalistic bridal jewellery, decorated with flower, petal, leaf or vine motifs, is a hugely popular look for necklaces and earrings as well as engagement rings and wedding bands. So too is the elaborate filigree work typical of the 1920s, when the Art Deco movement was

Engagement rings come in different styles and settings, from solitaire to multi-stone, cluster and random-set. While a modern look might call for a tension setting, a four-prong setting is a timeless classic, and a vintage ring would shine in an intricately wrought setting. The thickness and height of the band depends on the stone size and setting, and should be in proportion to your finger size. The latest innovation is the square-shaped band, which is reputed to be even more comfortable than a round band. After the ever-fashionable diamond, sapphires and rubies are the next most popular choice because they are harder than other precious stones. Semi-precious gems tend to be softer and are more prone to damage. Shapes include brilliant (round), pear (tear-shaped), princess (square), emerald (rectangular) and marquise (an elongated oval), as well as oval and heart-shaped. An emerald or marquise shaped stone looks lovely on a long-fingered bride, while the

brilliant or princess shape suits those with shorter fingers. As a general rule, white gold or platinum is a very flattering setting for diamonds or sapphires, making them look even brighter, while yellow gold settings are best for emeralds, rubies and opals. Also consider your skin tone. Brides with dark or olive complexions can wear yellow or white gold, those with fairer skin might prefer white gold, and red-heads could opt for white gold or the ever-feminine rose gold. Pure, rare and low maintenance too, platinum is the strongest and most durable of the precious metals, and provides an ultra-secure setting for a gemstone. The naturally white colour of platinum won’t tarnish or fade, and its 95 percent purity makes it the only truly hypoallergenic precious metal. When it comes to bridal jewellery, choose your gown first, then the jewellery to complement it. This might consist of a necklace with matching bracelet, or a choker and earrings. While chokers look elegant on brides with long necks, a strand of pearls or a longer chain might better suit a broader neck. Short hair or an up-do lends itself to drop earrings, and a pair of sparkling diamond studs complement any look.

VENUE LOGISTICS If only choosing a wedding venue were as easy as simply finding a space that you like. It may not seem terribly romantic right now, but do remember to bear in mind the logistics of a venue as this could save you untold hassles later on. Consider everything from the number of guests the venue will need to cater for, to the time of day and the season, as well as any accommodation your guests might require. You don’t need to know exactly what your guest count is before starting to look at venues, but you do need to at least have a rough idea before you begin – whether you’re planning a relatively intimate gathering of 50, the more standard size of 125, or a grand-scale celebration of 300plus! The best starting point on your quest is the Internet, as web-based searches instead of phone calls and emails will save you lots of time. Many bridal sites have venue databases, and you should be able to find out most of venue details online, such as the size of their banqueting

facilities and the services offered. Reading reviews on TripAdvisor might also help you to narrow down the list of possibilities. If you plan on having a church wedding, the location of your reception venue will need to be in fairly close proximity to that of the ceremony. However, if you’re content with a civil wedding, this will widen your options greatly. Today many reception venues host both the wedding ceremony and the reception; a practical option which has the added benefit of minimising potential transport complications. Also think about the type of reception you’re planning. You’ll need more space for a formal, sit-down dinner than a cocktail-style affair. And don’t forget the entertainment; a band or DJ will take up lots of room, as will a dance floor! Another prime consideration is your budget. Get a price estimate, including menu and bar prices and corkage fees, and the cost of waiters and bar staff. Some venues offer discounts on accommodation as well as other services if you’re prepared to be flexible. TYPES OF VENUES There are all types of venues out there, but which will be most suitable for your wedding? In order to decide, you first need to know the style and feel that you’re aiming for. Would you prefer a quirky, DIY-style wedding, a romantic country-themed celebration, or something with a more sophisticated atmosphere? Once you know what you want – or even what you don’t want – you should be able to rule out some venues immediately. The more fitting your venue is for your chosen theme, the less you’ll have to worry about the décor, which will end up being a huge money-saver. It’s also important to consider whether you want a full-service venue or not. The former should be able to supply most of your needs, such as tables, chairs, linen and catering, while the latter generally only offers you the space, allowing you the freedom (and the extra work that goes along with it) of hiring and coordinating all the service providers yourself.

IN A WORLD HERITAGE SITE WE HAVE CREATED A GOLFING MASTERPIECE.

VENUES

Traditional venues such as hotels and guest houses, which usually have set wedding packages, might be just the thing. Choose anything from an elegant boutique hotel to an upmarket international resort or a charming country inn. Hotels are able to provide in-house food and drink as well as accommodation for the bridal couple and the guests. However, remember that the larger hotels may host more than one wedding on the same day so there could be issues with a lack of exclusivity. Perhaps a golf or country club is just what you’re looking for. Many have beautiful buildings and grounds that are ideal for a wedding reception. Like a hotel, they’re also used to catering for large numbers of guests, particularly if you’re after buffet-style catering. For a smaller wedding party, a restaurant could offer a sure-fire recipe for success, and it’s often the most cost effective venue option too! You’re free to do things your way at a home wedding, and could save money by hiring the caterer of your choice and stocking your own bar. It can nevertheless end up being quite costly in the long run once you take all the extras into account, such as cutlery, crockery and linen, tables and chairs, and probably a tent or marquee, lighting, generators, portable toilets and flooring too. In addition, you may have to supervise the set-up of equipment, organise parking for guests, and clean up when it’s all over. There are a number of non-traditional venues to be found, such as art galleries, barns, beaches, boats and hired halls. If you’d prefer something outdoors, KwaZulu-Natal has an immense variety of beautiful spots for you to pitch a tent or marquee, giving you endless flexibility regarding décor and styling. Although romantic and scenic, al fresco weddings can nevertheless be a lot of work to organise. Take into account things like the privacy of your location and competition from the elements, such as sun, heat, rain or insects. Accessibility and parking facilities should also be considered.

TIMING AND WEATHER When you’ve settled on your short list, and made sure the venues are available on your chosen day, it’s time to pay them a visit. A good tip here is to go and see the venue on the same day of the week that you’re planning to get married and, if possible, at around the same time. This way you’ll be able to notice the little details, like the quality of the light and if there are any regular goings-on and routines that might interfere in any way with the smooth running of your special day. If you have a wedding co-ordinator, take them along too as they will be able to cast an experienced eye over the set-up and offer good advice. Also take the weather and the time of year into account when deciding on where to host your reception. Find out whether the venue is air conditioned and/or heated and, in the case of an outdoor wedding, if there’s an alternative space should it suddenly begin to rain. While Durban and the coast enjoy wonderful weather all year round, with glorious, long summer days, there is also the chance of rain and humidity during the warmer months. Conversely, the subtropical coastal areas experience warm and dry winters: even during the coldest months the average maximum temperature rises to 23°C during the day and rarely drops below 10°C at night. In the Drakensberg and KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, the weather is much more temperate. Mild winter days are followed by cold nights and the possibility of snow between July and September. During summer the days are warm and generally sunny, although afternoon thundershowers are common. A bushveld wedding in Zululand or the Elephant Coast is usually more pleasant in the cooler months between May and October, with January being the wettest month as well as having an average daytime temperature of 28ºC compared with the average July temperature of 22ºC.

VENUES CONT... You should also be aware of the potentially negative aspects of a destination wedding. With the exception of the venue’s online photo gallery and a ‘virtual tour’, you probably won’t be able to scope out the location and grounds yourself before you get there. While some brides might find this a bit unnerving, remember that destination weddings can produce some of the most relaxed and fun-filled celebrations. This will make the logistics of planning your wedding much easier! Also establish exactly what services the wedding coordinator will provide, and whether there is a fee. Find out what reception and ceremony areas are available, how many guests each can accommodate, and whether they are air-conditioned. Also ask the manager to email you a layout of each, including pictures. If you’d like to have a wedding on the beach, will this be possible? Predicted trends for wedding photography in 2017 and 2018 include a resurgence of film photography, which is the perfect choice for décor as well as portraits. Ideally, it’s good to have a mixture or both digital and film for maximum versatility. Aerial photography is another exciting development in the industry. Powerful cameras fitted to remotely controlled drone helicopters are able to provide a birdseye view of your special day – from the vows to the reception and the send-off. There’s also been a return to the more staged/styled approach to photographs as opposed to the casual reportage-style so popular over the past decade, with the focus on creating formal group photos that look like they could have come from the pages of a fashion magazine! Stylised photographs, where lighting, composition, pose and emotion are carefully staged by the photographer to create a ‘candid moment’ have also come to the fore. While the idea of stage-managing an authentic moment might seem counter-intuitive, many brides and grooms do need just a bit of guidance when it comes to posing naturally and expressing their true selves. The rise of social media and the likes of Instagram and Snapchat is seeing the wedding photo breaking new barriers! And while some brides might ask guests to check their selfie sticks at the door, others are embracing the trend, creating hashtags as well as using creative geofilters for their big day, or even providing special selfie stations and charging points for smartphones! CHOOSING A PHOTOGRAPHER When it comes to choosing a photographer, remember that the top ones will be booked well in advance, so do your homework, and do it in good time. Ask recently married friends for recommendations, and start browsing through websites and online galleries to get an idea of the different photographic styles, such as high fashion, intimate or informal, and determine what will suit your wedding vision. You might prefer fairly formal wedding photos, or something more natural and spontaneous ... or perhaps a combination of the two!

Compile a shortlist of likely professionals, and find out if they’ll be free on your wedding day as well as whether the packages they offer are in your price range. Once you’ve done this you can meet the photographer in person to discuss the finer details before signing on the dotted line. Meeting a prospective photographer is also important if you want to get a sense of their personality. You should feel comfortable in their presence and trust that they’ll be able to do your wedding justice. Essential questions to ask your photographer include: • Will you stay for a set number of hours on the day? • What will you charge for overtime? • Are travelling expenses included in the fee? • How many pictures will you take? • Will you visit the venue beforehand? • Who will fill in for you if you’re sick? • Do you have backup equipment? • How long will we wait for our photographs? Determine what your photographer’s standard package comprises. A budget option might cover the ceremony and formal group shots with a less experienced photographer, while a more comprehensive package could include pre-wedding shots and coverage of the ceremony and reception with two photographers, as well as an album and some retouching.

STUART DODS I have had a pretty diverse life so far. I have been a salesman for 15yrs both locally and abroad, a professional drummer with “Famous Curtain Trick”, an uncle to a beautiful niece and nephew. I guess I have always had a camera in hand as far back as school days. But although I had a love of visual things never thought the way I saw the world and captured it, was something that other people would take pleasure in with me. Well, I guess that all changed for me after shooting with film on holidays and getting friends to do portfolios with me in London. After 5 years in London and my return to South Africa I made the move to a digital camera. This opened up a whole new world to me and I was hooked more than ever before. I have never been an analytical person so have never really delved deep into at what stage I made photography a career but what I do know is I have to be happy when I take photos. It’s a passion that steals my creative energy but feeds my soul at the same time and my soul needs to be willing to reciprocate. Otherwise it’s an arrangement that doesn’t work. Then I met the love of my life and long story short…..I picked up my camera believed in myself and turned a passion into a career. I value my blessing everyday. A wedding is a once off important occasion and so is my approach to it + 27 (0) 31 572 4428 / +27 (0) 83 789 5283 stuart@stuartdods.com

HOT SHOTS A knowledgeable photographer will understand how best to capture those special moments that become classic wedding shots. These might include the bride and groom exchanging rings, dancing cheek-to-cheek and cutting the cake, the toasts and speeches, the hugs, kisses and laughter of family and friends – images which will remain long after the bridal bouquet has been thrown and the wedding gown packed away. Decide from the outset whether you’d like lots of posed, formal photographs, or if you’d rather simply relax and enjoy this magical day, while your photographer works in the background to record events as they unfold. You might like to provide your photographer with a checklist of scenes to be captured, such as the bride getting ready, as well as the groom and his best man, not to mention those key shots with family members (not forgetting the furry friends), and small touches like the dress, hair and jewellery. At the reception, there might be particular décor items you want captured – especially if you’ve made them yourself – such as wedding favours, stationery, signage and floral arrangements. There’s also the band or entertainment, food and drink, and special architectural or landscape backdrops. Bridal portrait sessions before the wedding have become popular, as have engagement shoots. This gives you time to become better acquainted with your photographer and get used to how they operate. In addition to producing some great photos, these sessions will help you feel more relaxed during the big-day photo shoots, resulting in more natural looking wedding photographs. Some brides are even having the portrait photos taken just before the ceremony to ensure they look their very best. When it comes to the editing of your photographs, pay attention to things like colour tones and post processing. For example, an image may be edited to add grain, decrease sharpness and contrast, and desaturate certain colours or even eliminate them completely. Consider that while trends in photographic editing may come and go, you want to be left with wedding photographs that are classic and timeless. Sticking to a more natural film-like processing means that the style of your photographs won’t look dated in years to come.

STATIONERY ERIX PIX

Wedding stationery has never been more creative. Today’s brides can choose from a multitude of artistic styles, from elegant calligraphy with hand-painted details to watercolours and sketches, dreamy botanicals, laser-cut cards, and so much more. Themes from nature remain favourites, and include lots of greenery, woodland and mountain motifs, as well as flora and wildlife. Wedding stationery with lettering embossed in the on-trend metallics of copper and rose gold are a winning formula. Mix ‘n match is another popular trend in the 2017/18 wedding season. Combine florals with stripes, metallics with rustic elements, delicate watercolours with precision laser-cut details, and calligraphy with organic embellishments. Colours are becoming richer, with pale pastels giving way to bolder palettes that incorporate forest green, peach, gold, and royal blue. While it’s good to be quirky and creative, experts caution against using too much colour. Balance bright hues with grounded neutrals, and make sure guests are able to read the text! CHOOSING STATIONERY Stationery needs to be chosen with the theme and style of the wedding in mind, be it romantic, rustic, modern or traditional. Once you have an idea of the type of celebration you’re having, start looking at examples of stationery in bridal magazines and on stationery websites. In addition to setting the tone for what’s to come, the wedding invitation should relay basic information such as location, date, time of day, and RSPV details. Wording tends to be less formal than in days gone by, with many couples deciding that something personal and heart-felt works best. Modern couples might prefer to go the paperless route and issue wedding e-vites or use wedding apps and social networks to spread the word about their upcoming nuptials. However, remember that not all your relatives may be up-to-date with the latest technology, so you’ll probably need to send out traditional invites as well. 76 Your Wedding Planner Guide

CO-ORDINATORS

Traditionally, the mother of the bride and chief bridesmaid are the first port of call when assistance is required. However, modern weddings tend to be quite complex affairs, in addition to which many of these erstwhile wedding helpers are very busy themselves, and may not have as much time as they’d like to take on a host of new tasks. Luckily for contemporary brides, there are many different ways in which to lighten the load! There’s no shortage of handy hints to help you get more organised, from compiling all your correspondence, notes, photos and other inspiration in a three-ring binder, to setting up a special email address just for your wedding. Countdown calendars are useful here as they help you to pace yourself and tackle planning and décor details one at a time (see our handy guide on Page 4). Downloading a wedding app is another great way to make things a little less tricky and a lot more fun. Current top-rated wedding planning apps (which are also free to download) include ‘WeddingHappy’, ‘Our Wedding Planner’, ‘iWedPlanner’, ‘LadyMarry Wedding App’ and ‘Joy’, as well as the local ‘Appy ever After’. There are also those that help you organise specific details, like ‘Table Plan’, ‘Wedding Decoration Ideas’ and ‘Honeyfund Wedding Registry’. Despite having all these tools at their disposal, many brides find that nothing beats the services of a professional wedding planner. A coordinator brings with them a wealth of knowledge – what’s hot in wedding themes, who’s who in the wedding industry, where to find the ideal venue, and how to get you the best possible deals. In the end, you’ll need to weigh up how much your time is worth and whether or not you have enough know-how to plan such an intricate event. At the very least, think about hiring a coordinator to take care of the wedding day itself, leaving you free to savour every special moment. While a number of venues provide in-house managers, do find out exactly what they are able to offer you. Most will only take care of specific weddingday issues and give you a list of their preferred service providers, so hiring your own dedicated wedding coordinator is most likely still a good idea. At the outset you might think that hiring a coordinator is simply an additional expense; however, remember that in the long run they may well be able to save you money.

The best wedding décor takes a beautiful colour palette, adds a winning theme – which these days can be literally anything: enchanted forest, vintage tea party or sophisticated glitz and glamour – and combines these broad brush strokes with personal details which express the unique personalities of the bride and groom.

DECOR / HIRE

Distinctive elements that reflect the two of you and your relationship could include a particular trip that you took together, a favourite animal, or any item that has a special meaning. Think about weaving a few of these elements into your décor theme, as well as aspects such as the menu, the stationery, or even your groom’s boutonniere! Branding is an understated yet elegant way to put an individual stamp on your wedding, and might consist of custom-designed monograms or duograms on the tableware and stationery. In 2017 and going into 2018, the idea of mixing two very different looks – urban and vintage – is gaining traction. The idea here is to juxtapose the delicacy and softness of the vintage theme (florals and hand-painted details, textures like lace and velvet, antique glassware and crockery, embossed stationery) with the clean lines of urban industrialism, including geometric and graphic shapes and patterns, illustrated in angular table plans, tableware and vases. This could manifest in a warehouse setting of high ceilings, bare walls and floors, done up with rich swathes of draped fabrics, dainty crockery, gleaming candelabra and romantic blooms. Alternatively, choose a garden setting or country venue and decorate with sleek, minimalist furniture, bright colours, modern table settings and lots of metallic details. COLOUR SCHEMES While the ever-classy metallic shades of as copper, pewter and rose gold are very much in evidence for the remainder of 2017 as well as 2018, pastel shades are set to give way to bolder and more intense colours. This will see décor themes enlivened with brightly-hued table linens and drapery, as well as vividly-coloured flowers and even menu items. The warm glow of rose gold or copper is particularly suited to spring and summer celebrations. The combination of blush and gold is romantic, with shades of pale pink – which can be highlighted with a bolder pink for contrast – teamed with glamorous elements of rose gold. While metallics are very fashionable, be careful not to overdo them! For example, instead of using as a base colour, rather introduce as an accent to enhance your colour palette.

82 Your Wedding Planner Guide

DECOR / HIRE

The ever-popular blush goes beautifully with the fresh shade of mint or with ‘Greenery’, Pantone’s colour of the year. Spring and summer weddings look smart and chic in combinations of pastel yellow and grey, as well as Niagra blue, which is one of the ‘new neutrals’ and Pantone’s colour for spring 2017. Autumn colour pairings include purple and lime, and turquoise and chocolate brown. Coral is also extremely on-trend, and can be combined with mint, teal, turquoise or aqua. For something a little different, consider shades of purple with black accents at a winter wedding. Scottish brides and grooms could go with a tartan-hued palette in red, forest green, grey and black. The 2018 forecast released by the Pantone Colour Institute highlights the following eight palettes. Resourceful pairs complementary blues and oranges for a visually appealing mix of warm and cool tones, while Verdure comprises the botanicals of delicate celery green, eggshell blue and berry-infused purples, and Playful’s vivid colours mix bright lime, blue, green and yellow.

WEDDING FAVOURS An attractively packaged wedding favour is both a key element in the reception décor and a charming way to thank your guests for sharing this special day with you. From edible gifts such as truffles, cookies and liqueurs to potted succulents and scented potpourris, this is a great method of introducing a personal touch. The trend these days is for practical rather than purely ornamental favours. Food related choices include speciality teas and coffees, homemade jams, oils and vinegars, spices and herbs. Scented candles, soaps, lip balms, flip-flops or a tote bag will also hit the spot. Alternatively, make a donation to a favourite charity in your guest’s name, and place a card at the table explaining why this particular cause is significant to you.

Discretion emphasises more subtle hues, but there’s nothing wishywashy about the quiet strength of shades such as Elderberry and Hawthorne Rose; and neutral metallics shine in Intricacy, with dramatic touches of Holly Berry Red and Sulfur Yellow. Far-fetched embraces the earthy warmth of Cornsilk Yellow mixed with rose-infused tones, while the powerful Intensity palette balances strong colours with black and gold, and the shimmering glow of TECH-nique incorporates forwardlooking shades of pink, purple and turquoise against a backdrop of Frosted Almond and Brilliant White.

BRIDALWEAR

Wedding attire in 2017 and 2018 takes in looks from all areas of the design spectrum. This includes voluminous ball gowns with romantic ruffles, pleats and bows as well as ethereal ensembles with flutter sleeves and flowing silhouettes made from fabrics like tulle and organza. Off-the-shoulder outfits are popular, and so too are daring dresses with plunging V necklines and thigh-high slit skirts, not to mention seethough garments incorporating ultra-fine netting and tulle, and sheer lace gowns with skin-toned lining. Bridal fashion inevitably incorporates a retro element, and the decade that’s turning heads right now is the 1970s. Think flares, fringes and leather jackets! Catwalks are also seeing curve-enhancing mermaid gowns, two-piece crop tops, jaunty jumpsuits, detachable skirts, capes and long trains. Organic accents are appearing in bold floral prints, colourful embroidery and floral appliques. Embellished bodices and ever-feminine lace details also remain a favourite. Popular looks for bridesmaids include mismatched, two-piece outfits, florals and textured fabrics, and even some casual options like pantsuits. Black and white is the surprise contemporary colour trend for 2018, with monochrome ensembles sporting embellishments like black bows, belts, ribbons and jewellery, as well as oversized ebony flowers. Gowns in shades of blush and metallics are still hot, with gold and silver beading adding some tasteful sparkle. CHOOSING A BRIDAL GOWN Have an idea of what you’re looking for before setting out on your bridal gown quest! Then determine how much you have to spend so as not to waste time trying on dresses that are out of your price range. Things to bear in mind include the season and time of day you’re getting married, the ceremony and reception venues, and styles that flatter your figure.

BRIDALWEAR

Begin the search early, especially if you’re not buying off the peg, as getting a gown custom-made by a designer can take around six to eight months, and even alterations to a ready-made dress can take a month or two. When you begin visiting bridal stores, keep an open mind and listen to the consultant’s advice. Although an outfit may have no ‘hanger appeal’, it could look very different when you try it on. You might like one that draws attention to your best feature (for example, your shoulders, arms or waist) while de-emphasising those aspects that you find less desirable. Don’t leave shopping to a busy weekend. Rather take a morning off work to take advantage of a quieter store and more of the salesperson’s time. It’s preferable not to bring too many people with you as all the opinions may well end up being too distracting and confusing. It’s also wise to be realistic. Buy the dress that fits you comfortably now, not something that will only be right once you shed that last five kilograms you’ve been aiming to lose for the past two years! Think you’ve found the one? Those in the know suggest taking photographs of the dresses you try on; not just from the front, but from a variety of angles to get the total effect. Also look at how the fabric appears in photographs: some fabrics, while appearing gorgeous to the naked eye, may look a lot different in your wedding album. MOTHERS OF THE BRIDE AND GROOM Weddings are special occasions, not just for the bride and groom, but for their mothers and grandmothers too! According to custom, the mother of the bride is the first to choose a dress, with the mother of the groom expected to follow her lead with a dress of similar length, colour and style. While formal or evening weddings generally call for the sophistication of a floor-length dress, current fashions are seeing shorter silhouettes, with a chic one-piece ideal for semi-formal as well as informal weddings. The look is versatile, and can be dressed up with gorgeous jewellery, heels, an elegant cover-up or beaded bag. On-trend dress details include beautifully jewelled and embroidered necklines, as well as illusion necklines which are wonderfully flattering and able to give just the right amount of cover. Versatile, comfortable and stylish, the jacket dress is another firm favourite as while the coordinating jacket provides coverage it can also be removed to reveal the beautiful dress underneath. A two-piece or mock two-piece can be fitted to accommodate varied proportions, and is excellent for concealing the tummy area and shaping the waist. Colours should complement those of the bridal attendants. While there are colour charts available online to help you identify suitable shades based on the colours being worn by the bridesmaids, there really are some colours which seem to go with everything! If in doubt, shades like mocha, bronze, taupe, champagne, putty, silver and charcoal, or even navy blue, tend to be sure-fire winners.

It isn’t only the bride who deserves to look amazing on her wedding day. Thankfully, in 2017 there are a lot more options when it comes to menswear for the groom and groomsmen, who can choose anything from the traditional tuxedo to mismatched suits, ties and waistcoats, textured fabrics, bold colours and patterns. Suits may either be hired or tailor-made. Basic black, charcoal and grey are safe options. At a formal or semi-formal evening wedding, the groom could wear a classic dinner suit or tuxedo, with a single or double-breasted jacket, and accessories such as a formal dress shirt and necktie with vest or cummerbund. White tie, which is also known as evening dress or top hat and tails, is the most formal type of clothing, and usually comprises a black dress coat, white bow tie, white waistcoat and wing collar shirt. Modern grooms might like to ditch the conventional look and explore their creative side! In keeping with nautical styling trends, a navy blue suit with white shirt and touches of red in the accessories is very fashionable.

Neutral tones of tan, brown and beige are another favourite, with these earthy hues being ideal for outdoor weddings. Shades of burgundy and plum are popular too. Pull these eclectic ensembles together with uniformity in the pocket squares, buttonholes or ties.

Go for a soft and flattering colour palette instead of something too bold and bright. While bold brows and smoky eyes are fashionable right

DARRYN SYKES

now, don’t overdo the rest of your make-up: a light foundation or tinted moisturiser, some concealer where necessary, a dusting of powder to cut the shine, near-nude lips and blush to give your cheeks that rosy glow should complete the look. A good make-up artist will be able to create a more polished version of your natural style, as well as being able to advise you on what looks good in photographs. Along with the bridal world’s current love affair with rose gold, shades of pink are being seen in bridal make-up too. Pastel pink, also known as ‘millennial pink’ is a popular and extremely romantic eye-shadow shade. The brown colour palette is also contemporary, with matte brown eyeshadow and liner enhancing the eyes without being too obvious. Eyelash extensions are an ongoing trend which can even see you through the honeymoon if they’re done correctly! When it comes to lips, matte finish liquid lipsticks are recommended, with top shades being pinks and corals which can be chosen to complement your skin tone. Prepare lips by using a sugar scrub to remove any dead skin, followed by lipstick or lip stain. Glosses which have a metallic sheen or sparkle are not recommended. If you’ve decided to do your own make-up, there are a few tricks of the trade you could learn. Apply products in natural light if possible, and remember to blend your foundation and blusher well, as the camera will show up any lines.

VANILLA PHOTOGRAPHY

A thin layer of lip gloss in a similar shade can add another dimension.

Sweep some bronzing powder across your chest and neck so your face doesn’t look a different colour to the rest of your body. Don’t use foundation too near your gown’s neckline as it could end up staining the dress. Opt for waterproof mascara and navy blue or charcoal eyeliner. STYLISH HAIR AND ACCESSORIES To find a hairstyle that looks gorgeous, suits your face and hair type, and complements your wedding dress and headpiece too, start by looking through print and online bridal magazines! Experiment with different looks, and have a trial run (or two) with your chosen hairdresser. Two to three weeks before the wedding have your hair trimmed to eliminate any split ends, and touch up your colour or highlights if necessary. The timeless chignon is the preferred up-do for glamour and sophistication, and can be enhanced by teasing the hair first or adding some waves. Prima ballerina style buns are both pretty and elegant, and look good with floral crowns or jewelled circlets. Wear a more modern version of this style by adding an asymmetrical element or leaving layers of hair loose in the front to frame your face. Alternatively, sport a centre parting and wear either a low bun at the nape of your neck or a French twist, embellishing it with a detailed headband and veil. Fussy styles are on their way out. Choose instead to wear your hair fairly loose and unsculpted, with beach waves and relaxed fish tail plaits which make full use of the hair’s natural texture. A loose ponytail or side braid adorned with flowers would be a pretty touch for a beach or rustic country wedding. At the other end of the scale, keep hair short, sassy and very contemporary with a sleek bob or a pixie crop, accessorised with a jewelled barrette. Your Wedding Planner Guide 101

SUGAR COATED CAKES

Edible Works of Art After completing my degree in Fashion Design, baking and cake decorating seemed like a great idea while on a gap year. A hobby soon turned into a thriving business idea, and Sugar Coated Cakes was started during 2010. Since then, I have won numerous awards, been featured in international wedding and cake decorating magazines, a TV insert on Mela and on Our Perfect Wedding, and also won Best Wedding Cake on Show at the Good Food and Wine Show 2014, which was judged by Mauro Castano from Cake Boss. Each wedding cake is a unique masterpiece, where all my favourite things come together- fashion, cake and art, so a bit of my heart and soul goes into every cake that leaves my kitchen. Inspiration for a custom designed wedding cake usually comes from a combination of details, including the wedding stationery, bridal gown and wedding decor. I specialize in bespoke wedding and celebration cakes, candy buffets and guest favours, so allow me to create show-stopping, edible work of art for your next event. CO-ORDINATORS

With in-house catering, the typical choices are either a buffet or a plated meal. Using an independent caterer tends to give you greater flexibility. Food stations have become more popular as they allow guests to sample an assortment of party food and make the dining experience more interactive and hands-on. Consider Italian, Greek and Middle Eastern delicacies, as well as spicy Korean and Mexican cuisine. Pairing food with beverages is also a nice touch. Think oysters and champagne, chicken sliders with beer, tacos and margaritas, smoked salmon and vodka, or prawn cocktails with juniper-infused gin. Or what about serving a multi-course meal, with each course having its own specially selected wine, and finishing off with a glass of dessert wine? A trend that looks set to stay is the move towards locally-sourced, organic produce. This includes not just the food (cheeses, preserves, meats, fish and vegetables) but the drinks too, from craft beers to gin and wine. Family-style food is also very big news right now. Whatever you decide on, try to ensure that the menu features a wide range of different tastes, satisfying your personal preferences as well as providing guests with something they will be able to enjoy. Look for menus that work well with the time of year; for example, light, fresh dishes in spring and summer, and heartier, more robust meals in autumn and winter.

LIQUID REFRESHMENTS There should be both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages available at the wedding reception. Guests are traditionally given a drink or arrival, and at the table it is standard to provide white and red wine, as well as still and sparkling water, and a bottle of champagne or sparkling wine for toasts. Prosecco or pink champagne is a favourite, as are champagne cocktails infused with fruit purées or liqueurs such as Aperol or crème de cassis. Classic cocktails (or mocktails) have staged a welcome return, and make the perfect welcome drink at an evening wedding in place of the ubiquitous mimosa or punch. Instead of a signature cocktail for the couple, choose his and hers favourites, like a gin fizz for the bride and a negroni for the groom. While an open bar will take up approximately 15 percent of the total wedding budget, this figure could drop to as little as 5 percent if you’re limiting drinks to beer and wine, or supplying alcohol and other beverages yourself. If opting for a cash bar, it’s still a good idea to put a set amount towards wine and beer, and include a complimentary welcome drink. Two bartenders and three servers are recommended for every 120 guests.

CATERING CUES The chief factors to bear in mind when looking for a caterer are: quality of food, level of service, and ability to deliver on the finer details. You need to find someone who listens to you and understands what you consider to be most important. At the same time, you want someone with the experience to build on your ideas to create a winning wedding day formula! Start looking for a caterer at least nine months prior to your wedding. Ask whether your venue has a list of preferred suppliers, and find out who’s available on your chosen date. Look at their portfolio and find out whether they have adequate facilities and are backed by a professional team. Ask where they source their produce and if they are able to meet specific menu requirements, such as Halaal, Kosher or vegan. Let your caterer know your budget up front so they’re able to work out a package to suit your needs. Check whether things like VAT, tableware and linen are included in the price, and when the deposit and final payment is required. Organising a tasting is also a good idea as this lets you sample the food and assess presentation first-hand. THE WEDDING CAKE The traditional wedding cake is a large, multi-layered or tiered affair made from a heavy fruit mix and decorated with icing (often over a layer of marzipan) or fondant. In addition to the classic fruit cake, timeless flavours like vanilla and chocolate are in vogue once more, as are multitiered marble cakes, and ‘naked’ cakes dusted with icing sugar and topped with berries. While popular for a number of years, the likes of mini-cakes, tarts, macaroons and brownies have left centre-stage, and the spotlight has once more come to rest on one focal wedding cake. The emphasis has also shifted to the cake icing and décor, with elements such as rose gold foil, edible pearls, rhinestones and hand-sculpted sugar flowers. Vintage jewellery is another interesting decorative element. Bright and bold floral motifs are very contemporary, with organic floral designs comprising climbing vines and flowers. For a less formal take on the wedding cake, try a blend of two styles with an almost-naked cake, lightly iced in buttercream and adorned with seasonal fruits or flowers. The textured look is also very on-trend, and includes cakes patterned with lace, pleats and ruffles, as well as feather or flower details. 104 Your Wedding Planner Guide

MUSIC

The idea here is for your guests to put on a pair of wireless headphones and dance to music broadcast via a radio transmitter rather than a speaker system. Be mindful of selecting the right accompaniment to each stage of the wedding; from the inspiring compositions of the ceremony, to the background melodies or live music of the reception, the emotion of the first dance, and the entertainment of a dance party thereafter. A new trend is to opt for a live band during dinner, followed by a party with lively dancing and a DJ, accompanied by club-style lighting and props. For background music at the reception, it’s a good idea to put together a wedding mix with the songs that best capture your relationship. The compilation could include the music that has been the most important to you in the course of your relationship, as well as lyrics which best articulate what you mean to one-another. Perhaps think of it as the soundtrack to the story of your romance. During the reception, it’s customary to have a live band or DJ to entertain your guests. This will depend on where you’re getting married. A pianist wouldn’t be appropriate for a beach wedding, while a rock band would be out of place in a small and intimate venue. Bear in mind that it’s best to select music that appeals to a broad range of tastes. Some wedding bands are able to play contemporary songs in a retro style, thus appealing to young and old. Another option is to select music to fit your theme. The sounds of the jazz era would be great for a Gatsby-style wedding, while songs sung in a particular language, such as Italian or French, would be appropriate for a destination-based theme. Spotify’s list of top 50 wedding songs for 2017 includes the likes of John Legend’s ‘All of Me’, Bruno Mars’ ‘Marry You’ and Ed Sheeran’s ‘Thinking out Loud’. When it comes to the first dance, why not something along the lines of ‘At Last’ by Etta James, ‘It Had to be You’ by Harry Connick Jr, ‘Marry Me’ by Train, or even the evergreen Elvis tune, ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’. The current popularity of ballroom dancing is also reflected in wedding music, so a band that plays tango, waltz or foxtrot arrangements might also be just the ticket for your first dance!

TRANSPORT ZURI PHOTOGRAPHY

For transport to – and from – the wedding, choose a great getaway vehicle that’s stylish as well as fun. And remember that wedding day transport isn’t just for the bridal party; charter a shuttle or hire a party bus and invite your guests along for the ride!

Helicopter flights and charters around the Drakensberg Mountains

Exciting options for the bride and groom include a vintage Bentley or Rolls-Royce Phantom, stretch limo, horse-drawn carriage, Vespa or tandem bike. A classic 4x4 like a Range Rover or Jeep would be perfect for an out-of-Africa scenario, while a sporty Ford Mustang, a snappy Mini Cooper, or even a VW Beetle might better suit a more modern or quirky theme. For a lake or seaside celebration, you could make a grand entrance by speedboat or yacht, or go for a more casual option like a canoe or rowing boat. Other unique choices include golf carts and helicopters, or even something fun and informal like a flatbed truck or bakkie decorated with ribbons and fairy lights! The top tip for fool-proof wedding day transport is to map out every detail of your schedule well in advance. Think about where your hair and make-up are being done, the venue for pre and postceremony photo shoots, and the distance to the reception site, estimating how much time you’ll need for each event. Factor a little leeway into your timeline to make room for any possible speed bumps or detours (both literal and metaphorical!) along the way. Book transport several months beforehand, and have vehicles checked to ensure a smooth and stress-free drive on the day. Remember to include bridesmaids, groomsmen and the bride’s parents when calculating how many vehicles you’ll need.

HONEYMOONS

Prior to departure, be sure to put your mobile phone on international roaming (limiting this to text messages is more affordable), pack an overseas adaptor, and don’t forget the chargers for your phone and camera. Put nametags on all items of luggage, and don’t leave home without your e-ticket and itinerary. Make photocopies of all cards and travel documents, vaccination certificates, prescriptions, medical aid cards and medical or trip insurance documents. In addition, leave contact numbers and copies of your itinerary, wills and life insurance documents with a friend or relative. Alternatively, you could store copies of documents on your smartphone, or access copies via Google Docs from anywhere in the world. Even if you’ve booked an all-inclusive vacation, covering accommodation, all meals, drinks, activities and transfers, take more money with you than you think you’ll need. There’s nothing worse than wanting to book a special tour or spa treatment only to discover your credit card has r eached its limit or you’ve run out of cash. It’s better not to book an early departure if you’re leaving the morning after the wedding. If there’s absolutely no alternative, then try to pack your suitcase a few days before you leave. Once you’ve made sure that you have essentials such as passports, currency, cameras, phones and medication safely stowed away, don’t stress too much about forgetting one or two items … most destinations will be able to provide you with basics such as toothbrushes and suntan lotion! Consider what you love as a couple (such as nature, food, art and culture, sports or adventure), what your getaway goals are (relaxing, indulging, exploring, or a little bit of each), your favourite type of setting (rural or urban, beach or mountain, tropical or alpine), and the best time of year to visit your dream destination. Remember that while travelling off-season can save you money, it may not be worth it if you have to put up with unpredictable weather. South Africa is a popular and affordable destination for overseas couples as well, with many international travel and tourism agents offering romantic honeymoon packages to our magnificent wilderness areas. This might include a safari expedition in the Kruger National Park, an urban adventure in the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town, or a winelands experience around Franschhoek and Stellenbosch. An all-inclusive holiday is a great idea. If you’ve already paid for everything upfront you’ll be able to relax without having to worry about the price of everything. Just be sure to check what’s included; for example, local beverages might be part of the deal, but not imported drinks such as wine. Unless you’ve specifically asked for cash donations as an alternative to items on the wedding registry, don’t count on receiving monetary contributions towards your honeymoon. If you do, let those amounts rather pay for an extra excursion or dinner in a five-star restaurant. TRAVEL ADVICE Those in the know suggest using a travel agent. Having someone else to take care of all the booking arrangements will give you less to worry about in the days leading up to the wedding. In addition, if anything does end up going wrong, you’ll have someone to call. If you’re travelling outside the country, check that your passport is up-to-date and organise visas, if required, and travel insurance. Many countries now require passports to be valid for six months from the date of entry. If you’re traveling to an exotic destination, it’s best to find out from your doctor whether vaccinations will be required. Sort out your foreign exchange needs, such as credit cards, prepaid travel cards and cash.

If you’re choosing an exotic location, make sure it’s not too remote … unless of course you have loads of time on your hands and don’t mind long-haul flights. After you’ve factored all the travelling time into the equation, not to mention the associated jet lag, it might well be better to choose some place closer to home. Your budget is another important issue. Does it allow for a multidestination European tour, a weekend at a wine farm, or somewhere in between? If strapped for cash or time, why not take a ‘mini-moon’ and save up for a real honeymoon later on? When booking a destination do let them know that you’re going to be travelling as newly-weds. There are lots of resorts offering budget deals, upgrades and other extras to honeymoon couples. HONEYMOON LOCATIONS Top trending honeymoon destinations for 2017, according to Harper’s Bazaar, include Morocco, Uruguay, Bermuda, Greece, Mexico and Provence (France), as well as India’s lake city of Udaipur, which is known as the ‘Venice of the East’, not to mention the closer-to-home options of Botswana and Mauritius (which came in together at number 2 in the rankings). There are also stunning locations here in KwaZulu-Natal, such as a mountain retreat in the Drakensberg, a beach holiday at Kosi Bay or a bush break at one of the Elephant Coast’s world-class game reserves. Consider looking for eco-tourism destinations which promote responsible travel that safeguards the environment while improving the wellbeing of indigenous populations. You’ll find a comprehensive list of resources, from participating organisations to top eco-destinations, on the website of the International Ecotourism Society: www.ecotourism.org.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED To get married in South Africa you will need a valid ID book, passport, or an affidavit attesting to your identity if the original document has been lost or stolen and you’re in the process of applying for a new one. If either partner is a minor, they will also need the written consent of their parents, legal guardians or the Commissioner of Child Welfare. If you’ve been married before, then a final decree of divorce is necessary, and if you’re a widow or widower, the death certificate of your spouse must be produced. You will also need clear copies of your two witnesses’ IDs or passports. Overseas brides and grooms wishing to marry in South Africa should be aware of a few simple legalities, with information about the various acts available on the website of the Department of Home Affairs: www.homeaffairs.gov.za. Foreigners will need copies of their passports, three colour passport photos each, and letter of non-impediment from their embassy. They also need to fill in a ‘Declaration for the Purpose of Marriage’ (Form BI-31) in the presence of the marriage officer, and produce copies of divorce decrees or death certificates where necessary. While your marriage officer will automatically issue you with an original abridged marriage certificate after the ceremony, some countries require an unabridged certificate to register the marriage once you return home. When the marriage officer registers your marriage with the Department of Home Affairs, they will apply for your unabridged marriage certificate, which can take anything from two to eight weeks to obtain. THE MARRIAGE CEREMONY According to the South African Marriage Act, the ceremony must take place indoors in a church or other building used for religious services, a public office (like a magistrate’s court) or a private dwelling. Further, it should take place in the presence of at least two witnesses, and the entrance to the venue must be open. Only marriage officers, such as a minister of religion, magistrate, special justice of the peace, and commissioner of oaths, are allowed to conduct a marriage ceremony.

Ceremonies today can be either secular or religious, and while the latter vary substantially between different cultures, most have common elements such as the offering of rings, flowers or some other symbolic item, and the exchange of vows in front of a religious or community leader. Most religions, including Judaism, Islam and Hinduism, see marriage as a sacred duty and an important facet of spiritual life. The convention of the ‘white wedding’, which is common to both Christians and Jews, has been adopted by many Zulu and Xhosa couples, who may hold a Western wedding service in addition to traditional rituals which honour the ancestors. Customary Zulu marriage proposal are accompanied by ‘lobola’ or ‘bride price’, which refers to payment made by the groom’s family to the bride’s family. In times gone by, lobola took the form of cattle. Today cash is usually considered acceptable. The wedding reception takes place over several days and involves the wider community in a celebration of feasting, dancing and singing. Civil ceremonies allow the couple increased flexibility regarding the type and location of their ceremony, as well as considerable freedom with their vows. This may be the perfect choice for a bride and groom who come from differing religious backgrounds or for a couple with no religious affiliations. MARRIAGE ACTS AND CONTRACTS In South Africa there are three laws under which couples may choose to be married. These include the Marriage Act (Act 25 of 1961), the Customary Marriages Act (Act 120 of 1998), and the Civil Union Act (Act 17 of 2006). The Customary Marriages Act provides for the civil registration of marriages solemnised according to tribal custom. Samesex marriages are permitted under the Civil Union Act, with partners given the choice of having their union called a ‘civil partnership’ or a ‘marriage partnership’ and enjoying the same legal and material benefits and responsibilities as couples married under the Marriage Act. Visit an attorney at least three months before the wedding to find out about the different marriage contract options. A Notary Public is an attorney who is specially qualified to execute notarial contracts and can advise couples regarding the contract that best suits their situation. Documents such as wills and insurance policies also need to be dealt with. Have an ante-nuptial contract (ANC) drawn up before the wedding to clarify the legal and financial aspects of your union. In Community of Property: This system applies if you do not enter into a specific ANC before marriage. All assets and liabilities, whether acquired before or after marriage, are shared equally. It can be problematic if one partner gets into debt, as the other will be held equally responsible for the amount owed. Furthermore, neither partner is allowed to sell an asset without the other partner’s written consent. Out of Community of Property: If the ANC is ‘Without Accrual’, each partner retains separate ownership of all assets and debts brought into and acquired during the marriage. This can be unfair as non-monetary contributions, such as looking after the home, are not acknowledged. Contracts ‘With Accrual’ take into account both monetary and nonmonetary contributions made during the marriage, while protecting each partner from the liabilities of the other. Assets acquired before marriage are excluded.
