WELCOME PICTURE LIFE

WELCOME TO THE FOURTH EDITION OF YOUR WEDDING PLANNER, WHICH HAS BECOME KNOWN AS THE ULTIMATE GUIDE FOR EVERY BRIDE IN KWAZULU-NATAL. THIS YEAR, WE EXTEND OUR CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE COUPLES PLANNING A WEDDING IN OUR BEAUTIFUL AND MULTICULTURAL ZULU KINGDOM. One of South Africa’s truly exceptional destinations, this province has something for everyone, from city weddings at top hotels and guest houses in Durban and Pietermaritzburg to beach weddings along our golden coastline, country-style receptions in the Midlands and Drakensberg mountains, and safari-type weddings deep in the African bush. As these pages unfold with images of spectacular locations, weddings and bridal couples, we hope that you’ll find something to spark your imagination and help you create a wedding ceremony and reception that’s tailor-made just for you! As soon as you and your partner have sealed your engagement, consider the bigger picture and start asking yourselves some important questions. You already know who your special someone is, but have you thought about the ‘what’, ‘when’, ‘where’ and ‘how’ of your big day?

Allow yourself to dream a little, thinking about what your fantasy wedding might be like. What inspires you and your partner? Big and bold or cosy and intimate? Glitzy and glamorous or simple and eco-friendly? Urban chic or flowery and romantic? Get some inspiration on themes and décor on page 11. When will you say ‘I do’? Think about the season and your wedding theme, as well as practical considerations such as taking time off work and whether your chosen date is on a long weekend or during the holidays: some venues and service providers book up well in advance and may be more expensive at those times. Where is the perfect place for your wedding celebrations? Town or country? Near or far? Indoor or al fresco? From boutique hotels and 5-star accommodation in the city to bushveld locations, sugar plantations, beach resorts and mountain manors, we’ve got the best locations

05

in the province covered in our ‘Venues’ guide, starting on page 15. How will you be getting married? Church wedding or civil ceremony? What are the legal requirements? Will you be marrying under the Marriage Act, Customary Marriages Act or Civil Union Act? South African marriages are legally valid in the vast majority of countries, making it even easier for overseas brides and grooms to get married here. Consult the section on ‘Legal Matters’ on page 58. We’ve also included a helpful budget planner on page 62. Finally, how do you work out a timeline and make sure everything runs according to plan? When should you start booking service providers and scheduling appointments? Get the lowdown in our monthly to-do list on page 6.

I would like to say a BIG thank you and to the entire staff of Lemontree Concepts, and especially Alvin and Mark for making my dreams become a reality. From the time we did our first consultation until the week before, you had the entire wedding from the ceremony to the reception planed out exactly the way we wanted it. The flowers were beautiful and I couldn’t have wanted a better bridal bouquet. You cater to all our needs and more – it was amazing. From both Craig and I, thank you all from the bottom of our hearts, it certainly will be the best day of our lives and the most memorable to our guests. Lots of love Cristal and Craig Bishop.

CO-ORDINATORS

Despite having all these services at your disposal, there’s still a lot to organise, and many brides find the services of a professional wedding planner extremely helpful. A coordinator brings with them a wealth of knowledge – what’s hot in wedding themes, who’s who in the wedding industry, where to find the ideal venue, and how to get you the best possible deals. In the end, you’ll need to weigh up how much your time is worth and whether or not you have enough know-how to plan such an intricate event. At the very least, think about hiring a coordinator to take care of the wedding day itself, leaving you free to savour the moment. While a number of venues provide in-house managers, do find out exactly what they are able to offer you. Most will only take care of specific wedding-day issues and give you a list of their preferred service providers, so hiring your own dedicated wedding coordinator is most likely still a good idea. At the outset you might think that hiring a coordinator is simply an additional expense; however, remember that in the long run they are often able to save you money. FUNCTIONS FOR AFRICA

DECOR

These days, eclectic styles are in vogue, so you don’t necessarily have to colour coordinate your bridesmaids’ dresses with the table napkins and the floral arrangement. Just about anything goes, giving you the freedom to mix and match … and have some fun! Start a Pinterest board, where you can pin images and ideas that appeal to you. Then sit down together as a couple, choose a few things that you both really like, and take it from there.

You could also look to the seasons for inspiration. While Spring suggests delicate colours, summer’s lush vegetation and abundant blooms might prompt tropical or beach themes infused with bold, dramatic hues. Favourite autumn colours include the mellow tones of amber, green and cream, not to mention Pantone’s colour of the year, Marsala, which is a rich wine-red. While coastal winters are pleasantly cool and dry, the colder weather inland could inspire a romantic highland theme with roaring log fires, candle-lit tables and soaring mountain scenery. This is also the perfect time for a bushveld wedding; either colonial elegance or ecoexperience.

One of the best décor ideas is to pick a fabulous location, where you won’t have to add too much to make the space gorgeous. A charming country hotel or themed restaurant will be easier to decorate than a plain function room or marquee. Then, you’ll need to check how much of the décor your venue is able to supply, and how much you’ll have to hire. These days, professional hiring companies supply an amazing array of stylish furnishings and themed décor.

WEDDING FAVOURS Prettily packaged wedding favours are a lovely way to thank your guests for sharing this special day with you. Edible favours are always extremely popular, and include things like liqueur-filled truffles, mini jars of local produce, such as jam, honey or olives, or cookies and cupcakes. The personal touch is key, like luggage tags inscribed with individual messages, attached to favours wrapped in hand-printed paper.

COLOUR PALETTES Monochromatic schemes always look elegant, so you could choose different tones of the same colour, or pick a colour you love, and team it with neutral shades. Different themes lend themselves to different colour schemes: a garden wedding might feature delicate florals and pastels against a lush green backdrop, while a vintage wedding could incorporate period prints and bold colours offset with silver or gold detailing, not to mention a sprinkling of 1930s era glamour. The ‘country chic’ or ‘rustic’ wedding in fresh pastel shades of blue, green or yellow is also very popular. Feature details here include apple crates, antique tablecloths and mismatched china. The seaside is another favourite, lending itself to pale blue or turquoise paired with neutrals such as sand, gold, silver or chalky pink. Alternatively, turn your reception into a celebration of colour with the latest décor trends: origami flowers, paper lanterns and pom-poms, festoon lighting and swags of streamers.

STATIONERY

PICTURE LIFE

WEDDINGS CELEBRATIONS REVOLVE AROUND THE PERSONALITY OF THE BRIDE AND GROOM, AND THIS SHOULD BE REFLECTED IN THE UNIQUE STAMP YOU PUT ON YOUR STATIONERY. INVITATION WORDING, TOO, WORKS BETTER IF ITS PERSONAL AND HEART-FELT, USING SIMPLE PHRASING SUCH AS ‘JOIN US IN CELEBRATING OUR WEDDING’. Stationery using illustrations of the couple are very popular right now, and custom-made invitations will create a lasting impression. Even if you don’t have the budget to go the whole hog, you could modify this trend by including details on your invitations such as hand lettering. Natural themes have come to the fore, and include lots of greenery, woodland and mountain motifs, as well as flora and wildlife. Colours in stationery are becoming more intense, with washed-out pastels being replaced by much bolder palettes that incorporate forest green, winered and deep blue. Metallic accents are also popular, particularly rose gold and copper. While it’s good to be quirky and creative, experts caution against using too much colour. Balance bright hues with grounded neutrals, and make sure guests are able to read the text! Modern couples might prefer to go the paperless route and issue wedding e-vites or use wedding apps and social networks to spread the word about their upcoming nuptials.

VENUES

Once you have an idea of what your budget is, and when you want to be big day to be, it’s time to start your search. Luckily, local brides and grooms are spoilt for choice when it comes to appealing locations in our beautiful province. KwaZulu-Natal boasts everything from eco-friendly resorts set in lush coastal forests, to luxurious beachfront manors, grand colonial estates in the picturesque Midlands, luxurious game lodges in ‘Big Five’ country, and sophisticated five-star or boutique hotels in the city, not to mention a variety of resorts and guesthouses in the foothills of the awe-inspiring Drakensberg range. One of these destinations could be home to your special venue, the place where you and your partner celebrate the next chapter in your lives together. VENUE LOGISTICS If only choosing a wedding venue were as easy as just finding a space that you like. It may not seem terribly romantic right now, but do remember to bear in mind the logistics of a venue, as this could save you untold hassles later on. Consider everything from the number of guests the venue will need to cater for, to the time of day and the season, as well as any accommodation your guests might require. You don’t need to know exactly what your guest count is before starting to look at venues, but you do need at least to have a rough idea before you begin – whether you’re planning a relatively intimate gathering of 50, the more standard size of 125, or a grand-scale celebration of 300plus! The best starting point on this all-important quest is the Internet, as web-based searches instead of phone calls and emails will save you lots of time. Many bridal sites have venue databases, but it’s a good idea to go by word of mouth as well. You should be able to find out most of venue details online, such as the size of their banqueting facilities and the services offered. Reading reviews on TripAdvisor might also help you to narrow down the list of possibilities.

Another prime consideration is your budget. Get a price estimate, including menu and bar prices and corkage fees, and the cost of waitering staff. Some venues offer discounts on accommodation as well as other services if you’re prepared to be flexible. TYPES OF VENUES There are all types of venues out there, but which will be most suitable for your wedding? To help decide, you first need to know the style and feel that you’re aiming for. Would you prefer a quirky, DIY-style wedding, a romantic country-themed celebration or something with a more sophisticated atmosphere? Once you know what you want – or even what you don’t want – it will enable you to rule out some venues immediately. The closer your venue is to your chosen theme, the less you’ll have to worry about the décor, which will end up being a huge money-saver. It’s also important to consider whether you want a full-service venue or not. The former should be able to supply you with most of your needs, such as tables, chairs, linen and catering, while the latter generally only offers you the space, allowing you the freedom (and the extra work that goes along with it) of hiring and coordinating all the service providers yourself.

If you plan on having a church wedding, the location of your reception venue will need to be in fairly close proximity to that of the ceremony. However, if you’re content with a civil wedding, this will widen your options greatly. Today many reception venues host both the wedding ceremony and the reception; a practical option which has the added benefit of minimising potential transport complications. Also think about the type of reception you’re planning. You’ll need more space for a formal, sit-down dinner than a cocktail-style affair. And don’t forget the entertainment; a band or DJ will take up lots of room, as will a dance floor!

Perhaps a golf or country club is just what you’re looking for. Many have beautiful buildings and grounds that are ideal for a wedding reception. Like a hotel, they’re also used to catering for large numbers of guests, particularly if you’re after buffet-style catering. For a smaller wedding party, a restaurant could offer a sure-fire recipe for success! And it’s often the most cost effective venue option as you won’t pay for venue hire, only for food and beverages. You’re free to do things your way at a home wedding, and could save money by hiring the caterer of your choice and stocking your own bar. It can nevertheless end up being quite costly in the long run once you take all the extras into account, such as cutlery, crockery and linen, tables and chairs, and probably a tent or marquee, lighting, generators, portable toilets and flooring too. In addition, you may have to supervise the set-up of equipment, organise parking for the guests, and clean up when it’s all over.

GOODERSON LEISURE

There are a number of non-traditional venues to be found, such as art galleries, barns, beaches, boats and hired halls. If you’d prefer something outdoors, KwaZulu-Natal has an immense variety of beautiful spots for you to pitch a tent or marquee, giving you endless flexibility regarding décor and styling. Although romantic and scenic, al fresco weddings can nevertheless be a lot of work to organise. Take into account things like the privacy of your location and competition from the elements, such as sun, heat, rain or insects. Accessibility and parking facilities should also be considered.

33

VENUES

Traditional venues such as hotels and guest houses, which usually have set wedding packages, might be just the thing. Choose anything from an elegant boutique hotel to an upmarket international resort or a charming country inn. Hotels are able to provide in-house food and drink as well as accommodation for the bridal couple and the guests. However, remember that the larger hotels may host more than one wedding on the same day so there could be issues with a lack of exclusivity.

GOOD TIMING When you’ve settled on your short list, and made sure the venues are available on your chosen day, it’s time to pay them a visit. A good tip here is to go and see the venue on the day you’re planning to get married and, if possible, at around the same time. This way you’ll be able to notice finer details, like the quality of the light and if there are any regular goings-on and routines that might interfere in any way with the smooth running of your special day. And, if you have one, take your wedding coordinator along too, as he or she will be able to cast an experienced eye over the set-up and offer good advice. WEATHER WATCH Also take the weather and the time of year into account when deciding on where to host your reception, finding out whether the venue is air conditioned and/or heated and, in the case of an outdoor wedding, if there’s an alternative space should it suddenly begin to rain. While Durban and the coast enjoy wonderful weather all year round, with glorious, long summer days, there is also the chance of rain and humidity during the warmer months. Conversely, the subtropical coastal areas experience warm and dry winters: even during the coldest months the average maximum temperature rises to 23°C during the day and rarely drops below 10°C at night. In the Drakensberg and KwaZulu-Natal Midlands the weather is much more temperate. Mild winter days are followed by cold nights and the possibility of snow between July and September. During summer the days are warm and generally sunny, although afternoon thundershowers are common. A bushveld wedding in Zululand or the Elephant Coast is usually more pleasant in the cooler months, between May and October, with January being the wettest month: the average daytime temperature in January is 28°C , while in July it is 22°C .

Make your special day

UNFORGETTABLE

AT THE ESTUARY HOTEL AND SPA

BRIDES AND GROOMS LOOKING TO EXCHANGE THEIR WEDDINGS VOWS IN KWAZULU-NATAL ARE THE MOST FORTUNATE COUPLES IN SOUTH AFRICA, FOR NO OTHER PROVINCE OFFERS THEM A MORE DIVERSE - AND SCENICALLY IDYLLIC CHOICE OF VENUES. From the majesty of the Drakensberg mountains to the green and gold of the Indian Ocean shores - and so much in between - the happy couple is spoilt for choice. There are game reserves and lakeside settings, country manors and mountain backdrops, golden beaches and modern hotels, boutique guest houses and old world farmsteads. One KwaZulu-Natal venue offers the choice of three very different wedding venues. The Estuary Hotel and Spa, a Herbert Baker inspired CapeDutch style manor, with 44 en-suite, air conditioned bedrooms, - each with a private balcony - situated on the shores of a private estuary on the lower south coast, allows the bridal couple to choose from three exquisite locations within the precinct of its spacious estate. There is nothing as graceful and serene as a formal wedding, and this format is a favourite for most larger weddings. The bride opting for the protocol of a traditional wedding at the Estuary Hotel and Spa can expect the exchange of vows and blessings to be conducted in a service held in the hotel’s interdenominational free-standing chapel, followed by a sparkling celebratory reception in the function room. Both the chapel and the reception facilities can be adapted to ideally suit the size of the wedding party and guests, while hotel services extend to the personal supervision of toddlers and children in a games room and play area. 42

The third option is a beach or seashore wedding on the golden sands of Silver Beach. This is an increasingly popular venue, when innovation and the wedding couple’s inventive character bring spontinaity to the nuptials, allowing the natural appeal of wide open spaces to set the scene. Contrary to expectations, beach weddings can be as solemn and as intimate as the most traditional church service, when not even inshore breakers can dampen the haoppiness of the happy couple. Whether it’s an intimate affair for a small party of family and close friends, or a more expansive gathering, the dedicated wedding staff at the Estuary Hotel and Spa are trained to tailor the function and facilities to meet the bridal couple’s individual needs and preferences High on a bride and her retinue’s to-do list will be a visit to the Estuary Hotel health and beauty spa, where blissful relaxation is all part of the pre-wedding pampering process.. And, of course, the honeymoon suite is an especially luxurious haven for the loving couple. Contact 039 311 2675 or visit www.estuaryhotel.co.za for more details.

A less formal but equally elegant option is an al fresco approach. To wed on the hotel’s Terrace, looking out over the manicured lawns to the calm waters of the estuary, against the backdrop of the Indian Ocean, is a captivating scenario. Such outdoor functions at the Estuary are usually conducted in mid-afternoon when cooling breezes waft in from sea, or at sundown, when the lengthening shadows tip-toe silently over sub-tropical gardens to bring an added touch of magic to this special day.

VENUE CHECKLIST Remember to ask lots of questions, and don’t just ask the bookings manager. Depending on whom you ask you might get a different answer, so also chat to people like the catering manager and the event coordinator. Find out things like how many weddings are held there on one day, who will be in charge on the day, and whether they have any major renovations or building programmes scheduled before your wedding. Other questions you could ask include:

Extra items: Will items such as a cake stand and cake knife be available? Coordinator: Is there a manager or coordinator available to supervise the set-up of the wedding? To what extent will you be able to liaise with them? Photography: Does the venue have scenic grounds with sufficient natural light for good photographs? If not, is there an attractive spot nearby?

Accommodation: Is there adequate accommodation, either at the venue itself or nearby?

Payment: What sort of deposit is required, and what is the cancellation policy? Find out details such as overtime charges and whether there are any hidden costs before signing the contract.

Facilities: Is the venue accessible by wheelchair and suitable for disabled guests? Does it have adequate seating for the elderly and does it cater to the needs of young children? Are there sufficient bathroom facilities? Catering: Must you provide your own caterer, or does the venue come with its own kitchen and catering staff? Liquor: Does the venue have a liquor license and would you be allowed to supply the bar requirements? If so, what are corkage fees? Parking: Is there enough parking, and how close is the parking lot to the reception area? Restrictions: Are there specific venue limitations, such as a ban on candles and confetti, loud music or dancing? Entertainment: Does the venue have its own sound and PA system with adequate speakers, or will this need to be hired separately? DĂŠcor: Does the venue provide table linen, floral arrangements, menu and place cards, as well as other decorations, or must you supply your own?

The seaside playground of KwaZulu-Natal is bounded by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean to the east and the Drakensberg to the west. In between beach and ‘berg lie the Midlands, while further north there are historic battlefields and world-renowned game reserves. East meets west in the cosmopolitan city and tourist capital of Durban, the cultural melting pot of the Zulu Kingdom. Durban, or ‘eThekwini’ as it is also known, boasts colourful markets, oriental bazaars and modern shopping malls, golden beaches and water sports, as well as top-class hotels, restaurants and casinos, and attractions such as the Botanical Gardens, uShaka Marine World and Valley of 1000 Hills. Some forty minutes northwest of Durban is the town of Pietermaritzburg, beyond which are the green hills of the Midlands, where the crisp climate and crystal clear air offer a refreshing respite from the coastal humidity. Venture further inland to witness one of the great natural spectacles of the African continent, the uKhahlamba Drakensberg mountain range, which extends some 200 kilometres from north to south, rising to heights of over 3 400 metres. The tropical paradise of the South Coast, which stretches from Port Edward up to Scottburgh, and includes the holiday towns of Margate, Southbroom and Pennington, is known for its beaches and golf courses, annual Sardine Run, and Oribi Gorge nature reserve. From Durban, a sun-drenched coastline extends through the North Coast’s premier holiday resorts of Umhlanga, Ballito and Zinkwazi, and along the unspoilt Elephant Coast to Sodwana and Kosi Bay in the north. This is the site of the iSimangaliso Wetlands Park, a marine treasure trove and World Heritage Site with whales, dolphins, turtles, elephants and rhinos.

Making your dreams a reality

Travelling inland through indigenous coastal forests and thornveld plains teeming with wildlife are the famed game reserves of Zululand, including the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Reserve, which was once the hunting ground of Zulu kings like Shaka and Dingiswayo. Zululand and the Battlefields area of northern KwaZulu-Natal was also the site of military conflicts between British, Boer and Zulu armies. DESTINATION WEDDINGS Another option is the destination wedding. With the exception of the venue’s online photo gallery and a possible ‘virtual tour’, you probably won’t be able to scope out the location and grounds yourself before you get there. While some brides might find this a bit unnerving, remember that destination weddings can produce some of the most relaxed and fun-filled celebrations, provided you ask the right questions and find out the finer details beforehand. When you contact the venue, ask whether they have a dedicated wedding planner on site who you can liaise with via email. This will make the logistics of planning your wedding much easier! Also establish exactly what services the wedding coordinator will provide, and whether there is a fee. Find out what reception and ceremony areas are available, how many guests each can accommodate, and whether they are air-conditioned. Ask the manager to email you a layout of each, including pictures. If you’d like to have a wedding on the beach, will this be possible? If travelling outside South Africa, it’s also vital that you find out what the legal obligations are for a wedding in your destination of choice, and what paperwork is required.

THE DAY THAT YOU AND YOUR PARTNER GET MARRIED SHOULD BE ONE OF THE MOST MEMORABLE OCCASIONS OF YOUR LIFE. PHOTOGRAPHY WILL CAPTURE ALL THE ELEMENTS THAT MAKE THIS DAY SO SPECIAL – THE BEAUTIFUL VENUE AND DÉCOR, YOUR LOVED ONES, THE FLOWERS, THE FOOD AND MORE – ALLOWING THEM TO LIVE ON FOREVER. YOU OWE IT TO YOURSELF, NOT TO MENTION YOUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN, TO MAKE SURE THAT THESE TREASURED MEMENTOS ARE THE BEST THEY CAN POSSIBLY BE.

64

Your special day is just that – YOUR SPECIAL DAY…..!!! Therefore it is imperative that the memories of this day are beautifully and meaningfully captured in photographs that will bring you pleasure for the rest of your lives. The photographer you choose to capture these memories for you should ideally be someone not only with a wealth of knowledge in the photographic industry, but also somebody that you can relate to on a personal level and whom you can feel comfortable and relaxed with while he is capturing your precious moments. Someone who will understand you and your special needs, and who will go the extra mile to ensure that your photographs are everything that you wish for and more. I pride myself on all of the above and look forward to helping you make your wedding day the best remembered day of your life…..!!

When it comes to choosing a photographer, remember that the top ones will be booked well in advance, so do your homework, and do it in good time! Ask recently married friends for recommendations, and start browsing through websites and online galleries to get an idea of the different photographers’ style, such as high fashion, intimate or informal, and determine what will suit your wedding vision. You might prefer traditional, posed wedding photos or more relaxed reportage-style pictures capturing natural, spontaneous moments ... or a combination of the two! Compile a short list of likely photographers, and find out if they’ll be free on your wedding day as well as whether the packages they offer are in your price range. Once you’ve done this you can meet the photographer in person to discuss the finer details and what exactly is included in the fee before signing on the dotted line. Meeting a prospective photographer is also important to get a sense of their personality. You should feel comfortable in their presence and trust that they’ll be able to do your wedding justice. PACKAGE DEALS Find out what’s included in your photographer’s standard package. Essential questions to ask your photographer include: Will you stay for a set number of hours on the day? What will you charge for overtime? Are travelling expenses included in the fee? How many pictures will you take? Will you visit the venue beforehand? Who will fill in for you if you’re sick? Do you have backup equipment? How long will we wait for our photographs?

COVER STORY SHELLEY FERREIRA ON....

Sharing Love, Sharing Life WE THOUGHT OUR READERS MIGHT WANT TO KNOW A BIT MORE ABOUT OUR GORGEOUS COVER BRIDE SHELLEY FERREIRA, SO WE ASKED HER TO SHARE A SNIPPET OF THE STORY LEADING UP TO HER SPECIAL DAY…

This is what she had to say.. Nick and I both studied at Vega School, though we never met while there. It’s actually weird how fate works out... Nick was two years ahead of me and was offered an internship at East Coast Radio. Two years down the line, he was appointed to Kagiso Media in JHB. This meant that there was a gap for his place at ECR. I was then also offered an internship at ECR, which led to me working there fulltime. Because I was new, they put me in contact with Nick via Skype so that he could teach me how things were done. This in turn led to a date at a coffee shop, where we spoke for hours on end and immediately clicked. We dated long-distance for about 5 months, before he eventually moved back to Durban. After dating for about 2 years, I went away to JHB to judge a pageant and Nick took the opportunity to ask my parents for my hand in marriage. (Little did I know!) We were going overseas for Christmas, so he planned with my family, that he was going to propose while we were there. This meant my family had to keep mum for 3 months! So, Nick bought the ring, kept it in a box, and hid it away until the time came to pack for our overseas adventure. For Christmas, he had given me an engraved padlock with our names on, and told me it was for the famous ‘love-lock’ bridge in Paris. (The Paris bridge

is a famous destination where couples go to fasten their locks onto the bridge, and throw the keys away, symbolising ever-lasting love) We visited Ireland first, and then Paris, where he secretly planned to propose. When we got to the ‘love-lock’ bridge, he made me get down to fasten the lock onto the bridge, but when I got up, he stayed down, whipped out the box with the ring and asked me to marry him. It was the most magical feeling, and in Paris! So that was the engagement part! When we arrived back in SA, we had a celebration party with all of our friends and family present. It was lovely. Within a week, we had decided on a date, and just needed to choose a venue. We chose the first venue we viewed, the Salt Rock Hotel. With its beautiful sea-views, we knew it was the place for us! I had great help with the wedding. My mother was so helpful, and truly my right hand! We had a great deal of stress trying to get everything in order, and Nick and I managed to win a bridal competition which included my dress, the photographer (he was AMAZING!) limo hire, make-up, honeymoon and so much more. It really helped us financially, and to focus on other things. The venue itself was ideal, and the lady who manages weddings at Salt Rock was great. She organised everything so perfectly, and made sure that load-shedding didn’t affect us at all! (organised a generator.) On the day itself, I couldn’t wait to be married. I was surprisingly calm and even left my wedding shoes behind and opted for my back-up pumps! (Which were very comfortable the whole night) 72

A knowledgeable photographer will understand how best to capture those special moments that become classic wedding shots. These might include the bride and groom exchanging rings, dancing cheek-to-cheek and cutting the cake, the toasts and speeches, the hugs, kisses and laughter of family and friends – images which will remain long after the bridal bouquet has been thrown and the wedding gown packed away. Provide your photographer with a checklist of scenes to be captured, such as the bride with her parents prior to the wedding, as well as key family members to include in the shots, and any particular items of décor that you would like photographed. Decide from the outset whether you’d like lots of posed, formal photographs, or if you’d rather simply relax and enjoy this magical day while your photographer works in the background to record events as they unfold. You might like to set up a bridal portrait session before the wedding or even an engagement shoot, which is very popular these days. This will give you time to become better acquainted with your photographer and get used to how they operate. In addition to producing some great photos, it will allow you to feel more relaxed during the big-day photo shoot, resulting in more natural looking wedding photographs. Some brides are even having the portrait photos taken just before the ceremony to ensure they look their very best! HEATHER FITCHET

CAPTURING THE MOMENT

PHOTOGRAPHY

UNIQ IMAGES PHOTOGRAPHY Joanna Pawelczyk My love and passion for photography was born out of my love for art, which led me to study Fine Art at UCT, finishing my degree in 2011. My subject of choice has always been people. It’s only natural that this passion would extend to my photography as well. I love being part of such a special moment of so many peoples’ lives, I love capturing the details, the laughs, the tears, the things that makes a wedding day the best day of your life. I like to be the fly on the wall as much as I can so as to allow the natural and unforced beauty of the wedding day to speak through the photos, while at the same time incorporating a feeling of fun, light-heartedness and spontaneity. My creativity and good eye mixed with my meticulous, perfectionist personality means that I not only deliver a good product but also excellent customer service and professionalism. VIDEOGRAPHY UNIQ IMAGES

TO FIND A VIDEOGRAPHER WHO’S JUST RIGHT FOR YOU, HAVE A LOOK AT EXAMPLES OF THEIR PREVIOUS WORK. YOUR EMOTIONAL RESPONSE TO THE VARIOUS WEDDING VIDEOS SHOULD GIVE YOU A GOOD IDEA OF WHOSE WORK YOU LIKE BEST. TAKE NOTE OF THINGS LIKE THE COLOUR, THE MOOD AND THE LIGHTING, AS THESE ELEMENTS WILL BE IMPORTANT WHEN COMMUNICATING WITH YOUR VIDEOGRAPHER ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT HIM OR HER TO FOCUS ON DURING YOUR BIG DAY. There have been huge advances in wedding videography in the past few years, with cameras using HD (high definition) technology able to achieve amazing results, and cutting-edge computer software and commercial production equipment advancing the industry even further. Remember though, if you intend on sharing the video electronically it helps to ask for it to be saved in three different formats – HD for your TV, medium for uploading to the Internet, and small for sending as an e-mailing attachment or watching via a smartphone or tablet. Videographers may also offer a wedding trailer, lasting between three and five minutes, which you’re able to upload to YouTube, Twitter or Facebook and share far and wide with friends and family. A novel prewedding idea is to make a video of the engagement proposal as well.

FLOWERS DAVID WEEKS

THE CURRENT ‘ROMANTIC LUXE’ TREND MEANS THAT FLOWERS ARE MORE IMPORTANT TO YOUR WEDDING DÉCOR THAN EVER BEFORE. CHARACTERISED BY SOFT AND FEMININE PASTELS, CREAMS AND WHITES, THE LOOK IS ALL ABOUT ABUNDANCE AND MASSES OF BLOOMS WHICH TAKE THE FORM OF EXTRAVAGANT FLORAL BACKDROPS, LUXURIANT CENTREPIECES HANGING FROM THE CEILING, AND OVER-SIZED ARRANGEMENTS. While international bridal fashions focus on varieties such as orchids, peonies, hyacinths and hydrangeas, why not bring in some local colour too? On-trend options could include the delicate shades of the amaryllis, sweet-scented freesias, calla or arum lilies in shades of pink, yellow or white, or the soft pink of a statuesque king protea. If you prefer bolder colours, then choose the bright blooms of the gerbera, which come in orange, yellow, pink and red, or the intense purple of an agapanthus. BOUQUETS AND BUTTONHOLES The design of your bridal bouquet should complement your wedding gown and theme. Contemporary colour schemes may be monochromatic or display shaded tones of the same colour. The cascade style is back in vogue, with bunches of roses, tulips and ranunculas, or a luscious combination of avalanche roses, brunia, echeveria, peonies, astrantia and hydrangeas in an elegant and timeless white and green palette. In keeping with the popular Bohemian look, brides are also choosing to wear flower crowns as an alternative to the traditional headpiece. While the bouquet will set the theme for attendants’ flowers, these days your bridesmaids are free to personalise their blooms. Flower girls could wear flowers in their hair or hold a foliage wand or a simple bunch of flowers. ARTFUL ARRANGEMENTS Greenery is everywhere at the reception, with fragrant garlands made from varieties of ivy or ferns combined with lemon leaf and herbs like mint and rosemary being used as table runners and chair swags or to string across archways, wind around pillars or hang from the ceilings. Table centrepieces could consist of simple bunches of meadow flowers, extravagant arrangements on candelabra stands, or a single dramatic bloom in a vintage vase. Use colourful bottles and jam jars, silver jugs and china teapots instead of traditional vases to achieve the popular rustic look. 78

CAKES & CATERING UNIQ IMAGES

THE WEDDING CAKE HAS LONG PLAYED A SYMBOLIC ROLE IN WESTERN CULTURE. IN THE ROMAN EMPIRE, THE ‘CAKE’ WAS A LOAF OF BREAD THAT THE GROOM BROKE OVER THE BRIDE’S HEAD TO SIGNIFY HIS DOMINANCE OVER HER. TODAY, IT’S ALL ABOUT MUTUAL LOVE AND RESPECT. THE ACTION OF THE BRIDE AND GROOM CUTTING THE CAKE REPRESENTS THEIR FIRST JOINT TASK IN MARRIED LIFE, WHILE THE GESTURE OF FEEDING CAKE TO ONE ANOTHER DENOTES COMMITMENT AND DEVOTION.

CAKES & CATERING

STEPHEN RAILTON

The traditional wedding cake is a large, multi-layered or tiered affair made from a heavy fruit mix and decorated with icing, often over a layer of marzipan, or fondant. These days, however, anything goes! Consider a nourishing carrot cake, a swirled vanilla and chocolate surprise, a delicious coffee-flavoured creation for a morning wedding or a rich red velvet concoction for a more sophisticated affair. Flavours can also be dependent on the season; for example, a light lemon cake in summer and a rich mocha, praline or fruit cake in winter. The textured look is very on-trend, and includes cakes patterned with lace, pleats and ruffles, feather or flower details, layers of sponge in rainbow hues, heart-shaped cakes, chocolate cakes filled with cream and topped with berries, and cakes that shine with sprinklings of glitter. Unusual cake flavours in 2015 might include honey and lavender, apple and caramel, blueberry and hot chocolate! LIQUID REFRESHMENTS Guests are traditionally given a drink or arrival, such as a glass of rum punch, champagne or a Pimms cocktail. There should be both alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages available. At the table, it is standard to provide white and red wine (usually a 50-50 split, although this depends on the season and time of day), as well as still and sparkling water, and a bottle of champagne or sparkling wine for toasts. Prosecco or pink champagne is a favourite, and champagne cocktails infused with fruit purées are another popular trend, as are craft beers, sangria and even different drink stations. While an open bar will take up approximately 15 percent of the total wedding budget, this figure could drop to as little as 5 percent if you’re limiting drinks to beer, wine and a signature cocktail, or supplying alcohol and other beverages yourself. If opting for a cash bar, it’s still a good idea to put a set amount towards wine and beer, and include a complimentary welcome drink. Two bartenders and three servers are recommended for every 120 guests.

MUSIC

STEPHEN RAILTON

MUSIC IS ONE OF THE MOST EFFECTIVE DEVICES TO ENHANCE THE AMBIANCE OF YOUR WEDDING, FROM THE INSPIRING SOUNDS OF THE CEREMONY TO THE ROMANCE OF THE FIRST DANCE AND THE LIVELY ENERGY OF A BAND OR DJ. For the ceremony, consider the sounds of an uplifting soloist or the grace and elegance of a string quartet. While traditional choices include Wagner’s ‘Bridal Chorus’ (often called ‘Here Comes the Bride’) and Mendelssohn’s ‘Wedding March’, you could also opt for a more modern piece, such as Pachelbel’s ‘Canon in D’. An emerging trend is to have contemporary tunes rearranged for the harp or other instrument, allowing couples to choose music they love that still sounds appropriate for the occasion

82

MUSIC

LOVE STORY - Couples are advised to put together a wedding CD mix with the songs that best capture their relationship. Perhaps think of it as the soundtrack to the story of your romance which also functions as a wonderful keepsake of your special day. THE FIRST DANCE - The first dance is a magical moment for newly-weds. This is your special time in the spotlight, so choose a song that represents what you mean to one another. CHOOSING YOUR MUSICIANS OR DJ - The musicians or DJ you choose will depend on where you’re getting married. A pianist wouldn’t be appropriate for a beach wedding, while a rock band would be out of place in a small and intimate venue. If opting for a DJ instead of a musician, find a professional who is technically proficient, has an excellent knowledge of music and a good selection of different types of genres.

Planning ahead is an excellent idea if you want to beat wedding day stress. This goes for the hair-cut, colour and style as much as it does for a weightloss plan and beauty treatments. Follow a sensible diet and exercise routine and, if necessary, consult a beautician to ensure you have the correct creams, serums and other treatments for your skin type. Closer to the wedding day, a spa visit for that essential manicure, pedicure, body massage and facial will leave you radiant as well as feeling relaxed and stress-free. GET THE LOOK While staying-power is important, bridal make-up should be all about enhancing your natural look rather than covering anything up. Go for a soft and natural colour palette instead of something too bold and bright. A good make-up artist will be able to create a more polished version of your existing look, as well as knowing what looks good in photographs. If you’ve decided to do your own make-up, there are a few tricks of the trade you should learn. Apply products in natural light if possible, and remember to blend your foundation and blusher well, as the camera will show up any lines. Sweep some bronzing powder across your chest and neck so your face doesn’t look a different colour to the rest of your body. Don’t use foundation too near your gown’s neckline as it could end up staining the dress. Opt for waterproof mascara and navy blue or charcoal eyeliner. Choose a bright lip colour, and carry it with you on the day – along with a handy powder compact and mirror – in case you need a touch-up.

Experiment with different looks, and have a trial run (or two) with your chosen hairdresser. Two to three weeks before the wedding have your hair trimmed to eliminate any split ends, and touch up your colour or highlights if necessary.

Wear straight hair down and complete an ultra-sleek look with a pretty floral crown or jewelled circlet. Alternatively, sport a centre parting and wear either a low bun at the nape of your neck or a French twist, embellishing it with a detailed headband and veil. Long hair with large sculpted waves or tousled curls secured by a simple clip goes beautifully with a strapless dress. Top stylists advise playing up natural curls, which will benefit from frizz-minimising styling products and a few strategically placed clips or pins. Thick hair can be worn up or down: flaunt your luxuriant locks by twisting them into a semi up-do, or wear a simple French or fishtail plait.

89

HAIR & BEAUTY

The timeless chignon is the preferred up-do for a particularly glamorous and sophisticated theme. Wear a more modern version of this style by adding an asymmetrical element or leaving layers of hair loose in the front to frame the face. At the other end of the scale, keep hair short, sassy and very contemporary with a sleek bob or a pixie crop, both of which are great with a birdcage veil, single clip or flower.

MAKE-UP TRENDS If you haven’t already heard, contouring is the latest technique taking over the beauty world that promises to create a more chiseled appearance. It works by mixing contour creams or two different shades of foundation together to highlight areas like the forehead and the nose. It also gives the illusion of perfect cheekbones and a more angular face. #MUMOB TIP Bright eyes are everything to keep you looking fresh during the day. When it comes to a mid-day facial tidy always tend to the under-eye area last by gently dabbing a few spots of concealer (a few shades lighter than your foundation) with your fingertip to blend. THEN DETERMINE HOW MUCH YOU HAVE TO SPEND SO AS NOT TO WASTE TIME TRYING ON DRESSES THAT ARE OUT OF YOUR PRICE RANGE. THINGS TO BEAR IN MIND INCLUDE THE SEASON AND TIME OF DAY YOU’RE GETTING MARRIED, THE CEREMONY AND RECEPTION VENUES, AND STYLES THAT FLATTER YOUR FIGURE. BEGIN THE SEARCH EARLY, ESPECIALLY IF YOU’RE NOT BUYING OFF THE PEG, AS GETTING A GOWN CUSTOM-MADE BY A DESIGNER CAN TAKE AROUND SIX TO EIGHT MONTHS, AND EVEN ALTERATIONS TO A READY-MADE DRESS CAN TAKE A MONTH OR TWO.

BRIDAL WEAR

Fashionable wedding gown styles range from the soft, flowing and whimsical creations favoured by rustic-chic brides, to the glamorous ball gowns favoured by brides with an eye for luxury and romance. Lightweight fabrics, cut-outs and illusion necklines still feature prominently, as do off-the-shoulder gowns and lacy embellishments. Champagne and pastel shades are popular, with blush as well as powder blue and silver featuring on wedding runways. BRIDAL GOWN GUIDE When you begin visiting bridal stores, keep an open mind and listen to the consultant’s advice. Although an outfit may have no ‘hanger appeal’, it could look very different when you try it on. You might like one that draws attention to your best feature (for example, your shoulders, arms or waist) while de-emphasising those aspects that you find less desirable. And don’t simply pick out something that your girlfriends will love – keep your fiancé in mind too. Chances are he doesn’t care a bit about the latest fashions, and would rather see you in a dress that shows you off to your best advantage.

BEYOND MEASURE

Don’t leave shopping to a busy weekend. Rather take a morning off work to take advantage of a quieter store and more of the salesperson’s time. It’s preferable not to bring too many people with you as all the opinions may well end up being too distracting and confusing. It’s also wise to be realistic. Buy the dress that fits you comfortably now, not something that will only be right once you shed that last five kilograms you’ve been aiming to lose since last Spring! Think you’ve found the one? Those in the know suggest taking photographs of the dresses you try on; not just from the front, but from a variety of angles to get the total effect. Also look at how the fabric appears in photos, as some fabrics, while appearing gorgeous to the naked eye, may look a lot different in pictures.

At a formal or semi-formal evening wedding, the groom could wear a classic dinner suit or tuxedo, with a single or double-breasted jacket, and accessories such as a formal dress shirt and necktie with vest or cummerbund. White tie, which is also known as evening dress or top hat and tails, is the most formal type of clothing, and usually comprises a black dress coat, white bow tie, white waistcoat and wing collar shirt. Modern grooms might like to ditch the conventional look and explore their creative side! A navy blue suit with white shirt and touches of red in the accessories is very fashionable, in keeping with 2015’s nautical styling trends. Neutral tones of tan, brown and beige are another favourite, with these earthy hues being ideal for outdoor weddings. Mismatched wedding suits are the latest word in groomswear. The look could entail suits for the entourage in different styles and colours, or variations of the same shade. Pull this eclectic ensemble together with uniformity in the pocket squares, buttonholes or ties.

JEWELLERY

GLAMOUR, ROMANCE AND LUXURY ARE CLEAR TRENDS IN 2015, WITH PRINCESS-STYLE NECKLACES, BRACELETS, BROOCHES, EARRINGS AND HEADPIECES IN WHITE, YELLOW AND ROSE GOLD AS WELL AS SILVER COMPLETING THE PICTURE. IN ADDITION TO THE TRADITIONAL BRILLIANT WHITE DIAMOND, BRIDES ARE OPTING FOR STONES IN FANCY PINK, RED AND PURPLE, AS WELL AS NATURAL SHADES OF GREEN AND BLUE INSPIRED BY ORGANIC ELEMENTS. Select a style of ring to complement your personality and interests. Romantic brides could choose a pink-toned heart-shaped diamond set in rose or white gold, while active brides might prefer a practical, flush-mount setting that will protect the gem and prevent snagging. An exotic rose-cut diamond set in yellow gold could be perfect for a Bohemian bride. Trendy brides can add some bling to their look with a fancy yellow diamond surrounded by a multitude of smaller sparklers and set in a diamond-covered band. A platinum band with a lustrous bezel-set stone is a minimalist, modern classic. Engagement rings come in different styles and settings, from solitaire to multistone, cluster and random-set. While a modern look might call for a tension setting, a four-prong setting is a timeless classic, and a vintage ring would shine in a filigreed setting. The thickness and height of the band depends on the stone size and setting, and should be in proportion to your finger size. An emerald or marquise shaped stone would look good on a long-fingered bride, while brilliant or princess would suit those with shorter fingers. After the ever-fashionable diamond, sapphires and rubies are the next most popular stone because they are harder than other precious gems. Semiprecious jewels tend to be softer and are more prone to damage. As a general rule, white gold or platinum is a very flattering setting for diamonds or sapphires, making them look even brighter, while yellow gold settings are best for emeralds, rubies and opals. Pure, rare and low maintenance too, platinum is a favourite metal for contemporary wedding rings, and it’s not hard to see why. The strongest and most durable of the precious metals, platinum provides an ultra-secure setting for a gemstone and never loses metal. The naturally white colour of platinum won’t tarnish or fade, and its 95 percent purity makes it the only truly hypoallergenic precious metal. When it comes to bridal jewellery, choose your gown first, then the jewellery to complement it. This might consist of a necklace with matching bracelet, or a choker and earrings. 100

Experience the privacy and luxury of individually designed and decorated lodges situated on the lake side, surrounded by game, bird life and the picturesque mountains. Luxury crisp fabrics, hand-embroideries, cotton linen, hand-painted lithographs and marble finishes are just a few of the details that complement the beauty and the tranquillity of the area. Special ‘extras’ for the honeymoon couple include a chilled bottle of bubbly and a box of irresistible chocolates on arrival... to set the mood for your stay. whilst the sun sets over the lake. Making memories that will forever be etched on your mind. For the more adventurous the options are endless, from fly-fishing on the lake to a quad-bike ride in Lesotho, a game viewing on horseback or even a hike up to the Bushman paintings. To ensure you have the honeymoon of your dreams, be sure to provide SANI VALLEY LODGE with as much information as possible when you make a booking, as each honeymoon package is tailored to each individual couple. Remember that some credit cards, as well as medical aid schemes, offer airline miles which you can put towards your honeymoon. And when booking a destination do let them know that you’re going to be travelling as newly-weds. There are lots of resorts offering budget deals, upgrades and other extras to honeymoon couples. In addition, most places have seasonal rates, so you’ll be able to get a much better deal out of their peak season. PARADISE FOUND Take a well-deserved break at a romantic retreat where love is in the air and you can really relax and unwind. These days, many couples give themselves a day or two to recover from the wedding celebrations before setting out on their honeymoon. And once you’re there, even if you’ve made a list of things to see and do, remember to set aside some time to do nothing at all.

Consider looking for eco-tourism destinations which promote responsible travel that safeguards the environment while improving the wellbeing of indigenous populations. You’ll find a comprehensive list of resources, from participating organisations to top eco-destinations on the website of the International Ecotourism Society: http://www.ecotourism.org. South Africa is a popular and affordable destination for overseas couples as well, with many international travel and tourism agents offering romantic honeymoon packages to our magnificent wilderness areas. This might include a safari expedition in the Kruger National Park, or an urban adventure in the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town. An all-inclusive holiday is a great idea. If you’ve already paid for everything upfront you’ll be able to relax without having to worry about the price of everything. Just be sure to check what’s included; for example, local beverages might be part of the deal, but not imported drinks such as wine. Unless you’ve specifically asked for cash donations as an alternative to items on the wedding registry, don’t count on receiving monetary contributions towards your honeymoon. If you do, let those amounts rather pay for an extra excursion or dinner in a five-star restaurant. TRAVEL TIPS

Favourite international honeymoon destinations include the Seychelles, Mauritius, the Caribbean and Europe. There are also stunning locations closer to home, such as a mountain retreat in the Drakensberg, a beach holiday at Kosi Bay or a bush break at one of KwaZulu-Natal’s world-class game reserves.

Those in the know suggest using a travel agent. The service won’t cost you any extra, and having someone else to take care of all the booking arrangements will give you less to worry about leading up to the big day. In addition, if anything does end up going wrong, you’ll have someone to call.

103

HONEYMOONS

Your budget is another important factor. Does it allow for a multidestination European tour, a weekend at a wine farm, or somewhere in between? If strapped for cash or time, why not take a ‘mini-moon’ and save up for a real honeymoon later on? Another option is the ‘twini-moon’, which sees newlyweds enjoying the best of both worlds by including two different holiday hotspots.

In addition, leave contact numbers and copies of your itinerary, wills and life insurance documents with a friend or relative. Alternatively, you could use Google Docs to upload copies of your important travel documents, making them accessible from anywhere in the world. Even if you’ve booked an all-inclusive vacation, covering accommodation, all meals, drinks, activities and transfers, take more money with you than you think you’ll need. There’s nothing worse than wanting to book a special tour or spa treatment only to discover your credit card has reached its limit or you’ve run out of cash. It’s better not to book an early departure if you’re leaving the morning after the wedding; after all, you don’t want to spend the first day of your honeymoon travelling on planes, trains or boats while you’re feeling a little off-colour. However, if there’s absolutely no alternative, then try to pack your suitcase a few days before the wedding. Once you’ve made sure that you have essentials such as passports, currency, cameras, phones and medication safely stowed away, don’t stress too much about leaving things behind … most destinations will be able to provide you with basics such as toothbrushes and suntan lotion!

IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS

In South Africa there are three laws under which couples may choose to be married. These include the Marriage Act (Act 25 of 1961), the Customary Marriages Act (Act 120 of 1998), and the Civil Union Act (Act 17 of 2006). The Customary Marriages Act provides for the civil registration of marriages solemnised according to tribal custom. Same-sex marriages are permitted under the Civil Union Act, with partners given the choice of having their union called a ‘civil partnership’ or a ‘marriage partnership’ and enjoying the same legal and material benefits and responsibilities as couples married under the Marriage Act.

To get married in South Africa you will need a valid ID book or an affidavit attesting to your identity if the original document has been lost or stolen and you’re in the process of applying for a new one. If either partner is a minor, they will also need the written consent of their parents, legal guardians or the Commissioner of Child Welfare. If you’ve been married before, then a final decree of divorce is necessary, and if you’re a widow or widower, the death certificate of your spouse must be produced.

THE ANTE-NUPTIAL CONTRACT Couples should visit an attorney to find out about the different marriage contract options. A Notary Public is an attorney who is specially qualified to execute notarial contracts such as these and can advise couples regarding the contract that best suits their situation. Other important documents such as wills and insurance policies also need to be dealt with. It’s essential that you have an ante-nuptial contract (ANC) drawn up before the wedding to clarify the legal and financial aspects of your union. In Community of Property: This system applies if you do not enter into a specific ANC before marriage. All assets and liabilities, whether acquired before or after marriage, are shared equally. It can be problematic if one partner gets into debt, as the other will be held equally responsible for the amount owed. Furthermore, neither partner is allowed to sell an asset without the other partner’s written consent. Out of Community of Property: If the ANC is ‘Without Accrual’, each partner retains separate ownership of all assets and debts brought into and acquired during the marriage. This can be unfair as non-monetary contributions, such as looking after the home, are not acknowledged. Contracts ‘With Accrual’ take into account both monetary and nonmonetary contributions made during the marriage, while protecting each partner from the liabilities of the other. Assets acquired before marriage are excluded.

THE CEREMONY Marriage ceremonies vary between different religions and cultures, although most have common elements such as the offering of rings, flowers or some other symbolic item, and the exchange of vows in front of a religious or community leader. According to the South African Marriage Act, the signing of the register must take place indoors in the presence of at least two witnesses, and the entrance to the venue must be open. Most religions, including Judaism, Islam and Hinduism, see marriage as a sacred duty and an important facet of spiritual life. The convention of the ‘white wedding’, which is common to both Christians and Jews, has been adopted by many Zulu and Xhosa couples, who may hold a Western wedding service in addition to traditional rituals which honour the ancestors. Customary Zulu marriage proposal are accompanied by ‘lobola’ or ‘bride price’, which refers to payment made by the groom’s family to the bride’s family. While this was once made in the form of cattle, today cash is usually considered acceptable. The wedding reception takes place over several days and involves the wider community in a celebration of feasting, dancing and singing. Civil ceremonies allow the couple increased flexibility regarding the type and location of their ceremony, as well as with their vows. This may be the perfect choice for a bride and groom from differing religious backgrounds or for a couple with no religious affiliations.
