MESSAGE FROM THE MEC FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT TOURISM & ENVIROMENTAL AFFAIRS IN KWAZULU–NATAL We’re excited that you’ve chosen the Zulu Kingdom as a destination of choice!! Our professionally registered tourist guides will make your stay an Exceptional Experience! On behalf of the people of KwaZulu Natal and the tourism sector within the province, I would like to thank you for having chosen KwaZulu-Natal as your preferred holiday destination. I would also like to encourage those who are planning their holidays to include KwaZulu-Natal as a must-see destination. Our province stands ready and willing to welcome you all to the Zulu Kingdom. A visit to KwaZulu-Natal allows you to experience our rich history, culture, wildlife and of course, breathtaking scenery. Our professionally registered Tourist Guides are at hand to ensure that you get real value for money and make your visit a truly rewarding and memorable experience. Our country has a number of professional Tourist Guides and the KZN province has professionally registered Tourist Guides operating either as national, provincial or site guides.

These guides specialize in various categories such as nature, cultural and adventure guiding. Tourist guides are easily recognisable by their unique name badges and identification cards which are always prominently displayed. These identification cards carry the tourist guides’ personal details and the various categories under which the guides operate. Our tourist guides adhere to a strict code of conduct and ethics. A database of registered tourist guides is available within the Department for verification purposes. By choosing a registered tourist guide, you can be assured of a unique tourism experience in the Zulu Kingdom. It must be noted that legislation in South Africa prohibits the use of unregistered tourist guides, and the Tourism Act 03 of 2014 gives you the right to ask.

INVITATION TO EXPRESS INTEREST ON TOURIST GUIDES TRAINING NEEDS IN KZN The Department is calling for an expression of interest from the tourist guide with training needs in order to bridge the knowledge gap as well as enhance capacity within the sector as part of broader professionalization. This is done in line with the Tourism Act no. 3 of 2014 which stipulates that all tourist guides must register with the National Department of Tourism by contacting the Provincial Registrar of that particular province in which they live in order to be recognized as a legal guide. Therefore tourist guides must first complete the required training and assessment with accredited institutions before they can proceed to register with the Department. The Department has discovered that there are a number of tourist guides that are guiding illegally in the province due to lack of qualification, hence the call for all candidates who are already in tourist guiding field who are unqualified and in need of one or more of the following:• To be trained for a qualification in tourist guiding • Up-skilled in different aspects to enhance their guiding knowledge • Recognition of Prior Learning and assessed in their respective fields Interested candidates must express their interest by completing an application form that is obtainable from the following sources:- www.kznedtea.gov.za, 217 Burger Street and all Municipal Tourism Offices. NB: It must be noted that preference will be given to qualified and unqualified candidates who are already in the tourist guiding sector. Furthermore the trainings will commence in the next financial year 2017/2018. Fully completed applications must be e-mailed to info.tourismreg@kznedtea.gov.za, faxed (086 275 8378), hand delivered or posted to: The Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, 217 Burger Street, Calder House Building, Pietermaritzburg 3201 for the attention of the Provincial Registrar. Enquiries can be directed to Mr Celumusa Thabethe on 033 264 9322/21/18 celumusa.thabethe@kznedtea.gov.za or Mr Sthembiso Zungu on sthembiso.zungu@kznedtea.gov.za 033 264 9316 Closing date: 30 November 2016

SANIBONANI and Welcome to the Exceptional Zulu Kingdom

We have just wrapped up one of the most exciting months on the tourism calendar, Tourism Month, which culminated with us celebrating the month in the South Coast on World Tourism Day. Tourism KwaZulu-Natal pulled out all the stops to ensure that Tourism Month was celebrated throughout the province as we promoted and encouraged our fellow citizens from KZN to take time out to explore the wonders of their province. We forged a partnership with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife (EKZNWL) to promote the Mahhala Friday campaign, where each week 100 cars were given free access to various EKZNWL parks around the province. This idea originated from the UNWTO 2016 theme, “Tourism for All - Promoting Universal Accessibility”. As TKZN, we also sought to utilise Tourism Month to ensure that tourism activities within our province promote human rights, especially where they pertains to those with special needs who visit us such as children, the elderly, the physically challenged , ethnic minorities and indigenous people. We invited quadriplegic tennis star, Lucas Sithole, using one of our very own Lilizela award winning tour operators who specialises in offering tours for the physically challenged, to shine the light on some of the exceptional work that some of our trade partners have done to ensure that KZN indeed strives to deliver on the principle of “Tourism for All”. Furthermore, we took this opportunity to promote our township tourism offerings aggressively through a partnership campaign “Shisanyama Sundays” with Gagasi FM, highlighting the rich history that visitors can explore whilst travelling in KZN. On 22 September, we also hosted the provincial Lilizela Awards, where we

celebrated the Best of the Best in our sector in KZN. We are happy to say that, in 2016, there was a significant increase in the number of entrants across seven categories, ranging from accommodation, to visitor experience, tour operator, tour guide, Eteya Awards and Universal Accessibility, an increase of almost 20% from 2015. We congratulate all the 38 provincial winners who will go on to represent KwaZulu-Natal at the national Lilizela Awards. R & B and Hip Hop music lovers can look forward to a sensational performance by Anatii, featuring multi-platinum and Grammy-nominated American R & B superstar Omarion at The Wavehouse on 2 October 2016. On 16 October 2016, KZN will host the oldest road classic cycle race in South Africa, the Tsogo Sun Amashova Durban Classic where cycling enthusiasts can choose between the 35km, the 65km and the 106km road race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. As we head towards the festive season, we are happy to say that the tourism sector has seen some great improvements globally, nationally, and also in KZN. Tourism in the continent is predicted to grow by 3.7%. Our August 2016 Economic Impact Update indicates that in South Africa the sector is expected to grow by 3.1%, exceeding global

NDABO KHOZA CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER: TOURISM KWAZULU-NATAL

tourism economic growth, which is predicted to be 2.3%. We can safely say that we are expecting a profitable festive season, and trust that our trade partners are ready to welcome our visitors with the warmth and hospitality for which the province of KZN is renowned. We urge you to continue to follow us on all our social networks, Facebook (KZNTourism), Instagram(@tourismkzn_official), Twitter(@Tourism KZN), YouTube (KwaZulu-Natal Tourism Authority) and Pintrest (KZN Tourism), to stay updated on all our upcoming events. 1000 Hills

Enquiries: 031 777 1874 Website: http://1000hillstourism.com/

When Europeans arrived at the Port of Natal in 1825, the Valley of 1000 Hills was a remote and isolated area teeming with game. WS Field was one of the first Europeans to settle in 1851, and leopards were said to occasionally spend the night on the veranda of the Field homestead in what is now Kloof. Within a few years a wagon route opened up between Durban and the interior, close to what is now the Old Main Road. The establishment of the railway line linking the goldfields with the port rapidly followed the discovery of gold in the Transvaal in the 1880s, and the rail and road traffic through the 1000 Hills increased. The Valley of 1000 Hills is named after the many hills and valleys which rise up from the banks of the Umgeni River as it flows from the distant Drakensberg mountains to the Indian Ocean. The valley has been home to the Zulu people for centuries, with many continuing to practice and live their unique traditional lifestyle. Their colourful ceremonies and expressive, artistic culture give this area its vibrant atmosphere and creative energy. Explore the roots of Zulu culture by taking an organised tour deep into tribal lands. Witness ancient Zulu ceremonies, as traditional diviners ‘throw the bones’ and communicate with their spiritual ancestors at PheZulu Safari Park. PheZulu also offers traditional Zulu dancing and cultural shows, as well as game drives, local curios, wonderful views across the valley and a crocodile and snake park. On the crest of the hills overlooking the valley are leafy suburbs and village centres, which have astonishing views and a year round holiday climate of warm summers and cool winters. These villages offer all the creature comforts one would expect including spas, B&Bs, fine dining, sophisticated shopping centres, outdoor adventure and local arts and crafts unique to the area.

Clermont Kwa Dabeka

Tourism Development

Claremont Kwa Dabeka Tourism Clermont was a black middle income township during the apartheid days, surrounded by Westville, Kloof, New Germany and Inanda in the distance. The main road is called Clermont road and was named after Sir Clermont, a farmer in the area who sold his land. It was the only place in Durban where black people were able to buy property and build houses. Since the end of apartheid Clermont has become a sprawling township as people from the rural areas came to seek work opportunities in the nearby suburbs of Westville and New Germany, Pinetown and Durban. Clermont has a large Anglican, Catholic and Wesleyan community and on Sundays one can see the women of each denomination wearing their church uniforms with pride.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

PIETERMARITZBURG MIDLANDS A most welcome spurt of rain over the recent past is transforming the rolling hills of the KZN Midlands into an explosion of new growth and restoring its reputation as one of the country’s most picturesque regions.

DID YOU KNOW?

For more info check out the website www.midlands.kzn.org.za Showcasing the area’s natural splendour, the Open Midlands Gardens initiative has every justification for claiming affinity with the popular social media term of OMG! In its third year, OMG presents 30 extraordinary gardens stretching from the Dargle to Warburg, with more than 30% making their debut, throughout the weekends in October and November. One of the OMG highlights is the Fair Fell Flowers event on Saturday, 29 October, at Yellowwood Cafe that includes the Midlands Rose Society’s annual rose show, a line-up of garden experts, and a plant sale.

A well-entrenched hospitality ethic is setting the scene for a veritible explosion of culinary experiences in the Midlands. Guaranteed to satisfy the most picky of palates, the offerings range from top table dining to wholesome community homecooking, liberally infused with influences from across the world and flavoured with fresh organic ingredients. 32 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Oct-Nov 2016

Cyclists of all shapes and sizes are set for the annual Tsogo Sun Amashova Durban Classic that, this year, celebrates its 30th anniversary on 16 October. Roughly tracking the Comrades Marathon route from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, more than 10 000 riders will come under starter’s orders for the three races over 106 km, 65 km and 35 km. Appealing to super fit athletes who thrive on variety, is the popular Midlands Ultra triathlon that is contested on the weekend of 28 and 29 November at Midmar Dam.

An array of stand-up comedians takes to the podium on Wednesday, 1 October, at the Golden Horse Casino in Pietermaritzburg. The same venue is also playing host to another iconic event, the hugely popular Eastern Extravaganza, on 5 November. For something more cerebral, the Gandhi Peace Walk and Cultural Celebration takes place in the city on 2 October with more than a 1 000 participants expected. To accentuate the Midlands’ popularity as a wedding destination, the Windmills Bridal Fair near Mooi River on 28 November will appeal to the full spectrum of roleplayers and stakeholders of this industry. Speaking of the region’s intrinsic attractions, a host of Saturday markets, notably the Farmer’s Market at the KZN Botanical Gardens in Pietermaritzburg, and the Karkloof Farmer’s Market just outside Howick, are worthy of an early-morning visit, come rain or shine.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

ZULULAND

The Zululand region lies north of the Thukela River and extends to the subtropical northern parts of KwaZulu-Natal. It is an area of breathtaking hills and valleys that pulsate with the sounds of traditional tribal villages, a place where you can unexpectedly be invited to share a meal or drink from the calabash as the sorghum beer is passed around. Once the prized hunting grounds of Zulu kings, this region now abounds with game reserves and nature trails, offering opportunities for hiking and bird watching.

DID YOU KNOW?

For more info check out the website www.zululand.kzn.org.za Set within the bustling harbour city of Richards Bay is the Richards Bay Game Reserve, which boasts a huge community of aquatic birds as well as hippo and crocodiles. The lagoon, which offers spectacular wetland scenery, is an important nursery ground for marine fish such as grunter, salmon and perch and is home to a number of bird species including flamingo, cormorant and a number of other waders – and if you’re lucky you may get a sighting of the rare pink-backed pelican. Once you’re done with wildlife, take a dip in the warm Indian Ocean at the Blue Flag Alkantstrand Beach, and complete your day with a romantic dinner at the Waterfront.

With a traditional Zulu wedding, it’s only when the pre-wedding negotiations and ‘Lobola’ formalities have been taken care of that wedding finally takes place. And it would not be unusual for the bride to change more than three times on her wedding day – this allows her to show off to her in-laws just how beautiful she is in different colours. 34 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Oct-Nov 2016

The warm Indian Ocean’s mangrove swamps and life-giving lagoons give way to rolling green hills and indigenous forests, and the chance of spectacular bird watching. Located between Mtunzini, Eshowe and Empangeni is the Ongoye Forest Reserve, regarded as one of the ‘gems’ along the Zululand Birding Route for its impressive 605 bird species,

particularly the rare Woodward’s barbet or green barbet. In addition to the birdlife, there are ancient cycads, epiphytic ferns, orchids, and other rare plants, samango monkeys, bushbabies, the elusive blue duiker as well as the Zululand dwarf chameleon. Lake Jozini is the southernmost point in Africa and only place in South Africa where tiger fishing is readily available. The ferocious fighting Tiger Fish is a major angling game fish with a series of eight large, protruding, sharply pointed teeth. The Lake, which is surrounded by the Pongola Game Reserve and Phongola Nature Reserve, provides spectacular game viewing along the water’s edge, and is a haven for cormorants, herons, ducks, storks and many more waterbirds.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

BATTLEFIELDS

The KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields boasts the largest concentration of significant battles and war related sites in South Africa – with 82 battlefields, museums, old fortifications and places of remembrance. But if it’s more than history you’re looking for, the Battlefields region does not disappoint – there are a number of activities to keep the adventure junkie happy, from white-water rafting down the mighty Thukela, to some serious mountain biking and 4x4 trails.

DID YOU KNOW?

For more info check out the website www.battlefields.kzn.org.za The month of October is a high point on the calendar for history buffs as it highlights the start of the Anglo Boer War which was fought between the British Empire and the Afrikaans-speaking Boer settlers from October 1899 to May 1902. This is where famous men once walked – Winston Churchill, former soldier and newspaper correspondent, Mahatma Gandhi, who was a stretcher bearer, and General Louis Botha, famous for his military strategies – each playing a part in the history of the KwaZuluNatal Battlefields.

Ladysmith was catapulted into world fame when the Boer Forces laid siege to the town on the 2nd of November 1899. For the next 118 days, Ladysmith made headlines worldwide until its relief on the 28th of February 1900. Despite the devastation caused by the constant bombardment, the town endured. 36 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Oct-Nov 2016

A good place to start your Battlefields experience is at the Ladysmith Siege Museum, considered one of the best Anglo Boer War museums in the country. This building with its original flagstone floors and cast iron pillars was built in 1884 as a market house, and served as a ration post for civilians during the siege. The museum has a comprehensive display of memorabilia, relics and interpretive panels relating to the Siege of Ladysmith and the Anglo Boer War.

The Battlefields region offers great bush and wildlife experiences too… the Nambiti Conservancy Game Reserve, near Ladysmith, is an expansive area with an incredible biodiversity, including cheetah, giraffe, zebra and the Big Five. The quant town of Utrecht is located in the foothills of the Balele Mountains. Not only is it a town within a game park, it is a town steeped in history with beautiful historic buildings and an old military cemetery. The Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift battlefields areas, whilst poignant reminders of the futility of war, are great for hiking, mountain biking and horse trails – for your safety and enjoyment, be sure to book a local guide.

UMZINYATHI

Rich in history, culture & striking beauty

UMZINYATHI IS A HISTORICALLY RICH REGION, RENOWNED FOR ITS NATURAL BEAUTY. THE DISTRICT IS SITUATED IN NORTHWEST KWAZULU-NATAL, BORDERED BY THE MIDLANDS IN THE WEST, THE DRAKENSBERG IN THE NORTH, AND ZULULAND TO THE EAST. The Umzinyathi region bears memories of the wars that swept across South Africa between 1879 and 1902, but its history starts long before this. The legendary King Shaka and the Zulu nation created upheaval among local tribes, the Voortrekkers crossed the mountains to settle on the land, while the British colonists had settled at what was known as ‘Port Natal’, now Durban. What followed was an era of war, as the Zulus, Voortrekkers and British clashed in some of the bloodiest battles in the history of South Africa, shaping the towns and villages of this region. The wars were fought over land and sovereignty, and played out over almost 100 years. Battle of Blood River/Ncome: 16 December 1838 The most significant battle of the Voortrekker-Zulu conflict took place 48 kms east of Dundee at what became known as

‘Blood River/Ncome’. After Voortrekker leader Piet Retief and his party were killed at King Dingane’s capital of Mgungundlovu, Andries Pretorius led a commando consisting of 464 men to a strategic site on the banks of the Ncome (‘Praiseworthy’) River. The Voortrekkers established a defensive position with their 64 wagons (known as a laager) and awaited the Zulu attack, which took place on Sunday, 16 December 1838. Between 12 000 and 15 000 warriors attacked, and in the ensuing battle approximately 3 000 are estimated to have been killed. So many died in the river that it ran red with blood. The Voortrekkers were convinced that their victory was as a result of Divine intervention, leading to the anniversary of the Battle being commemorated in later years as a public holiday. It is now remembered as the Day of Reconciliation.

NORTH COAST The North Coast offers luxury, beauty, sport and history – an unspoilt natural environment with lush tropical coastline, and warm waters. It is a place to indulge the senses - either in good restaurants offering fine dining, or partying in nightclubs. Tee off on the excellent golf courses, or for the sheer thrill of it - take to the air for a bird’seye view of this magnificent coastline.

DID YOU KNOW?

Fort Pearson and the Ultimatum Tree, both of which are national monuments, lie within the Harold Johnson Nature Reserve. The Fort was built in 1878 on a bluff overlooking the pont-crossing on the Tugela River. Both of these monuments played a significant role in the Anglo- Zulu war of 1879 and a few war graves can also be seen on site.

For more info check out the website www.dolphincoast.kzn.org.za The Dolphin Coast shoreline offers a perfect combination of golden beaches and sheltered coves for the definitive beach pleasure – sun, surf, fishing, horseback beach rides or snorkelling. Explore the pristine estuaries and coastal forest of the Amatigulu Nature Reserve – go canoeing on the Amatigulu Estuary and Nyoni River. Or spend the day on Zinkwazi Beach, an unspoiled holiday haven just 80km north of Durban. Zinkwazi (Zulu for ‘fish eagle’) is home to a nature conservancy with a rare combination of indigenous forest, teeming with birdlife, and edged with undulating golden beaches. The shoreline encompasses a beautiful lagoon, where one can go fishing, boating, or birdwatching.

in their vast numbers over the wetlands. An opportunistic Bat Hawk or Sooty Falcon may even be spotted swooping in for a quick bite during the evening display! As dusk falls, the swallows suddenly drop into the reed-beds and disappear for the night. Adventurous activities abound, from quad biking through the sugar cane fields to taking a flip along the magnificent coastline by microlight. For kids, and the curious-minded, there are the crocodile and animal farms. This playground is infused with the presence of the Zulu King and the pioneering spirit of the early European and Indian settlers – a kaleidoscope of culture, nature and adventure… so enjoy all that the Dolphin Coast has to offer.

One natural highlight in the region at this time of year is the arrival of the European Barn Swallows in November. It is an incredible sight to witness up to 3 million of these tiny migratory birds from the special viewing site in Mount Moreland as they gather together in the skies above the reedbeds about half an hour before sunset, flying www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Oct-Nov 2016 39

DRAKENSBERG

The Drakensberg is an awe-inspiring range of mountains forming the natural border between Lesotho and KwaZulu-Natal. Named ‘Ukhahlamba’ by the Zulu people, this 243 000 hectare mountainous region, well deserves its international status as a World Heritage Site, and offers massive cliffs towering over riverine bush, lush evergreen forests and cascading waterfalls and mountain streams as well as hiking trails that cater for hikers of varying fitness levels.

DID YOU KNOW?

For more info check out the website www.drakensberg.kzn.org.za Experience the spectacular Sani Pass mountain road, once a rough mule trail and now the well-known entry point into Lesotho from the Drakensberg, and offers spectacular scenery, breathtaking drop-offs and icy waterfalls en-route to the mountains of Northern Lesotho. This is a highlight for 4x4 enthusiasts, with the reward being amazing views and the opportunity of enjoying a pint at the highest pub in Africa (2 874 metres above sea-level). Also, look out for the shy little ice rats which live in holes in the ground around the pub!

Cathedral Peak is the only Berg area where you can drive to the top of the Little Berg, bringing you much closer to the escarpment. Access to the Little Berg is via Mike’s Pass, a 10.5 km long 4x4 track. The pass ends at the Arendsig gate which is the starting point of routes to the renowned Ndedema Gorge, Organ Pipes Pass and the escarpment.

Talking of heights, take to the air to experience nature’s wonderland from a different viewpoint – a scenic flight over the escarpment. Experience the awesome thrill and peaceful serenity of hot air ballooning from a site in the region of the Kamberg Valley and within sight of Giant’s Castle. Flights by helicopter or microlight are provided by Cathedral Peak Hotel and The Champagne Sport Resort. Look out for the majestic bearded vulture soaring above the mountains – known locally as the Lammergeier (lamb catcher). Or visit one

of the vulture restaurants, where animal carcasses provide a poison free, reliable food source for the vultures. The most renowned vulture restaurant is in the Giant’s Castle Game Reserve, and another is located near the Drakensberg Sun Hotel and the newest addition is at Cathedral Peak near the Didima Camp. Other specials to look out for include the Cape vulture, wattled crane, bald ibis and orange-breasted rock-jumper. The more energetic will enjoy one or perhaps several of the many hiking routes on the lower slopes - from short ambles through indigenous fern forests, to more strenuous, full day hikes traversing rivers and hillsides, and even to full-on adventuring. Watch out for the 290 species of birds, 48 species of mammals, or the rare varieties of plant-life.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

SOUTH COAST

The KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, with its golden beaches, warm Indian Ocean, subtropical forests and rolling hills, offers much excitement for the adventurous traveller - with outdoor pursuits ranging from mountain biking and gorge swings to shark diving and motor racing. But rest assured there is plenty to keep the less adventurous busy… such as a round of golf at one of the 11 top golf courses, seasonal whale watching and of course beach activities.

DID YOU KNOW?

For more info check out the website www.tourismsouthcoast.co.za The South Coast beaches offer something for everyone, golden sands, tidal pools and beaches for swimming, surfing and sunbathing. With seven of these beaches having achieved 2016/2017 Blue Flag status, it’s exciting to note that Marina Beach will host the launching of the new national Tourism Blue Flag Project. This project will see young people trained in various aspects so as to make your Blue Flag beach experiences even better. Current Blue Flag beaches are Umzumbe Beach near Pumula, Lucien Beach near Margate, Marina Beach as well as the Pennington, Ramsgate, Southport and Trafalgar beaches.

The coast at Port Edward is known for its shipwrecks and in 1878, The Ivy ran aground on the beach. It has been said that when the locals realised its cargo included hundreds of cases of wine, beer and spirits, they went on the biggest binge of their lives! 44 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Oct-Nov 2016

Mountain biking enthusiasts will be delighted to compete once again in the popular Lake Eland Quattro Classic. This event will see scores of riders setting off to test their skills in what surely must be a cyclist’s paradise with single track and gravel roads through open mountain sections and beautiful valleys as well as game-viewing opportunities. Another popular MTB event is the Rocky Bay Resorts ‘Bitter-Sweet’ MTB challenge offering spectacular ocean views and challenging bush tracks. November sees the Dezzi South

Coast Raceway in Oslo Beach hosting a KZN Drags event, with an ‘old school vs. new school’ race that will have motoring enthusiasts and ‘petrol heads’ yearning for more. There are number of nature reserves in the region, each offering a unique blend of flora and fauna - from bird watching in thick coastal and riverine forests, to the spectacular kloofs and crags of the Oribi Gorge. Or, go diving at the Aliwal Shoal, a popular spot for wreck diving. It is the resting place for the submerged wrecks of the ‘Nebo’ and ‘The Produce’. The Nebo, which struck the Aliwal Shoal in 1884 and went down with its cargo of railway material, lies in about 30 metres of water and is still fairly intact, attracting plenty of reef and game fish.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

ELEPHANT COAST

Located within the Elephant Coast region is the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa’s first proclaimed World Heritage Site, which, together with Mozambique, has been protecting Africa’s first transfrontier marine conservation area since 2009. It is a beautiful and unspoilt area blessed with dense evergreen forests, lush ferns and wild orchids, wild date and lala palms, swamp forests, mountainous sand dunes, thick coastal forest and pristine beaches.

DID YOU KNOW?

Lake Sibaya is the largest fresh water lake in South Africa with a surface area of 77 km? an average depth of 13m and is at is deepest 40m. In years of poor rainfall Lake Sibaya is often the only permanent water in the area where flocks of up to 20 000 waterfowl can congregate.

For more info check out the website www.elephantcoast.kzn.org.za Few areas in Africa have the incredible diversity found in this narrow strip of land, approximately 200 kilometers long, just 70 kilometers wide, and home to an incredible 21 different ecosystems. With this variety in habitats, it is little wonder that this region offers some of South Africa’s finest birding and game viewing. Visitors to the uMkhuze section of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park might be lucky and catch a glimpse of the newest additions – three male lions which have been acquired to add new blood to the existing pride, and will be released from their boma during October. This is part of the plan to bring lions back after an absence of 44 years, with the first introductions taking place over the last few years. One cannot visit the region without visiting the little town of St Lucia, home to hippo and crocodile tours as well as seasonal whale watching – between the months of May and December. Another memorable experience is to watch a giant sea turtle heave herself onto the beach (the same beach she hatched from), to lay her eggs. During the summer

months, generally from November to the end of February, a few selected lodges offer guests the privilege of a turtle tracking experience – watch in awe as these giants of the sea emerge from the Indian Ocean to complete their breeding cycle. Experiencing Sodwana Bay’s scuba diving will leave you with no doubts as to why it is considered South Africa’s diving mecca. There is much to explore on Sodwana Bay’s reefs, which are mostly located at around 18m, sometimes less. Amongst the hard corals, caves, pinnacles and blowholes, divers will come across an abundance of sea creatures and life forms. Along with this exquisite reef diving, visitors can enjoy exploring the nearby coastal forests, go bird watching and surfing as well as trips to Mabibi or Lake Sibaya.
