SANIBONANI

NDABO KHOZA CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER: TOURISM KWAZULU-NATAL

and Welcome to the Exceptional Zulu Kingdom

We are rapidly approaching the middle of the year and KwaZulu-Natal has already achieved so much in the tourism sector. We hosted another successful Tourism INDABA in May and KZN put its best foot forward once again and graciously hosted thousands of delegates who attended the exhibition. We also took this opportunity to engage with a lot of buyers and international media who attended the exhibition. We ensured they were brought up to date about our new direct international airlines routes latest tourism developments as well as those that are in the pipeline, which we believe will further boost the tourism potential of the province and propel the destination to greater heights. We are very thrilled to see that the tourism trade remains committed to ensuring that we continue to offer world class products and facilities to our visitors. Over the past year alone, we have seen a number of products investing substantially in refurbishments and upgrading their establishments. These include: • Prince’s Grant Coastal Golf Estate has replanted 100 000 indigenous trees and plants to re-establish the natural biodiversity of the area. The Estate is now recognised as a Site of Conservation Significance by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. • The Windmills Resort in the Midlands is now under new management and has been rebranded as Brahman Hills with a new spa. • The Hilton Hotel in Durban underwent a refurbishment exercise that included remodelling the Presidential Suite and restyling the rooms and corridors. • Protea Hotel Umhlanga has doubled its capacity from 120 rooms to 240. They have also added a new restaurant, a conference venue that accommodates more than 120 delegates, and refurbished the reception and foyer. • Premier Hotel Sani Pass is also undergoing a full refurbishment that is estimated to be completed by the end of this year. This will result in 34 additional rooms and will advance the hotel from a 3-star to a 4-star graded hotel. • First Group has also invested over R28 million towards the total refurbishments of the Selbourne Golf Estate, Hotel and Spa. Three iconic Tsogo Sun Durban properties have received top honours for service excellence, hospitality and prime location

from the world’s largest travel website, TripAdvisor. Garden Court Marine Parade clinched first place, followed closely by Southern Sun Elangeni and Maharani in second place, with Suncoast Towers holding the sixth spot. We have a full calendar of events to satisfy a variety of tastes. • The Tsogo Sun Sprint takes place at Scottville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday, 4 June 2016, with this year’s theme being Unbridled African Flair. • The South African Music Awards, affectionately known as the SAMA, will be coming to KZN for the first time to celebrate 22 years of the best of the best in the South African music industry. The awards will be held at the Durban ICC on 4 June 2016 and broadcast live on SABC. • The Great Gatsby National Polo event will be held at Shongweni on 5 June 2016. • Seal, who has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide and released a total of nine studio albums, will be at the Durban ICC on 14 June 2016 • The Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) will celebrate its 37th edition from 16 to 26 June 2016. • The Ugu Jazz Festival will see top SA musical talents performing on 25 June 2016 at Port Shepstone • The Vodacom Durban July on July 2 will bring fashionistas, celebrities, socialites and horse racing enthusiasts to KZN to what has become the biggest event in the social calendar of South Africa and indeed the biggest racing event in Africa. • Multi award winning musicians, Common

and Queen Latifah, will be performing at the Keep the Promise Benefit Concert on July 16 at Kingsmead Stadium as part of the International AIDS Conference. • The Elan Property Group Gold Cup will be held at the Greyville Racecourse on 30 July 2016. Those that want to experience the winter wonders of KwaZulu-Natal can head to the inland and still have exceptional events such as: • The Royal Show with craft and home industry exhibitions and stalls, as well as competitions for birds, livestock and agricultural produce runs from 27 May 5 June 2016 in Pietermaritzburg. • The Newcastle Airshow will set the skies blazing on the 4 June 2016 • The Dundee July Rural Horseracing event will be held at Dundee on 16 July 2016 Last year, we partnered with the East Coast Radio House and Garden Show to introduce a strong tourism section on the show, aimed at promoting intra Provincial travel and showcasing travel and adventure products in the province. The show, called the KZN Travel and Adventure Show, will be held on 8-10 July 2016 at the Durban Exhibition Centre. For more information visit wwww. kzntravelandadventureshow.co.za. Vodacom Durban July 2 July 2016

Durban is the heart of horseracing in South Africa and centres on Greyville Racecourse, the Theatre Of Champions, where, on the first Saturday in July, the entire racing world will focus on the R4.25-million, Grade 1 Vodacom Durban July. It is Africa’s Greatest Horseracing Event attracting the best horses in Southern Africa and visitors from around the globe who worship the magnificence of the thoroughbred on a day that always produces an extravaganza of fashion, fun and exhilarating racing and has the 55 000 crowd screaming and cheering as the 18 runners battle it out over 2 200m for the continent’s ultimate racing prize. “July Day,” which has an unbroken history dating back 120 years, features an unparalleled programme of racing, fashion and live entertainment and the biggest marquee village in the country. It is where the rich and famous mingle with the everyday racegoer and the common purpose is to back the winner of the “big one.” It is the day when well over R100-million will be paid out in winning bets with an expected Pick Six pool of more than R12-million, a Quartet pool on the Vodacom Durban July of a similar amount and yes, Place payouts for the first six horses past the post in the Vodacom Durban July. The Vodacom Durban July Fashion Experience presented by the Durban Fashion Fair showcases the best creations of local designers with outfits developed around the “Leader of the Pack” theme for the day and fantastic prizes are on offer for raceday fashion winners. “July Day” at the Theatre of Champions has it all - the best racing the best fashion and the best of fun. It’s the only place to be so we’ll see you there.

1000 Hills

When Europeans arrived at the Port of Natal in 1825, the Valley of 1000 Hills was a remote and isolated area teeming with game. WS Field was one of the first Europeans to settle in 1851, and leopards were said to occasionally spend the night on the veranda of the Field homestead in what is now Kloof. Within a few years a wagon route opened up between Durban and the interior, close to what is now the Old Main Road. The establishment of the railway line linking the goldfields with the port rapidly followed the discovery of gold in the Transvaal in the 1880s, and the rail and road traffic through the 1000 Hills increased. The Valley of 1000 Hills is named after the many hills and valleys which rise up from the banks of the Umgeni River as it flows from the distant Drakensberg mountains to the Indian Ocean. The valley has been home to the Zulu people for centuries, with many continuing to practice and live their unique traditional lifestyle. Their colourful ceremonies and expressive, artistic culture give this area its vibrant atmosphere and creative energy. Explore the roots of Zulu culture by taking an organised tour deep into tribal lands. Witness ancient Zulu ceremonies, as traditional diviners ‘throw the bones’ and communicate with their spiritual ancestors at PheZulu Safari Park. PheZulu also offers traditional Zulu dancing and cultural shows, as well as game drives, local curios, wonderful views across the valley and a crocodile and snake park. On the crest of the hills overlooking the valley are leafy suburbs and village centres, which have astonishing views and a year round holiday climate of warm summers and cool winters. These villages offer all the creature comforts one would expect including spas, B&Bs, fine dining, sophisticated shopping centres, outdoor adventure and local arts and crafts unique to the area.

Clermont Kwa Dabeka

Tourism Development

Claremont Kwa Dabeka Tourism Clermont was a black middle income township during the apartheid days, surrounded by Westville, Kloof, New Germany and Inanda in the distance. The main road is called Clermont road and was named after Sir Clermont, a farmer in the area who sold his land. It was the only place in Durban where black people were able to buy property and build houses. Since the end of apartheid Clermont has become a sprawling township as people from the rural areas came to seek work opportunities in the nearby suburbs of Westville and New Germany, Pinetown and Durban. Clermont has a large Anglican, Catholic and Wesleyan community and on Sundays one can see the women of each denomination wearing their church uniforms with pride.

PIETERMARITZBURG MIDLANDS

Benign autumn weather may have raised the prospect of an unseasonally warm winter in the picturesque KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, but the chances are that Mother Nature will have the last word as the traditionally cold season approaches. No wonder that old timers in the high-lying reaches of the region are betting on a frosty winter, quite likeky to be punctuated by the odd snow fall, as they stock up on wood to keep the fires burning.

DID YOU KNOW?

For more info check out the website www.midlands.kzn.org.za The romaticism of a stark winter, log fires and a selection of superlative wedding venues, not to mention an outstanding hospitality culture, makes the Midlands a most attractive proposition for couples wanting to tie the knot. To this end, the Mercury-sponsored KZN Bridal Fair on 24 and 25 June in the caverous Olympia Hall at the Royal Showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg will draw plenty of interest. So too will the ever-popular Windmills Bridal Fair, the landmark destination near Nottingham Road, on 28 June. Exhibitors and visitors to the country’s largest mixed agricultural show in southern Africa, the Royal Show in Pietermaritzburg, will hope for a busy end to the 2016 show that draws to an exciting close during the first week of June.

Recent surveys indicate that more than 60% of brides hailing from the greater Durban area consider a wedding in the Pietermaritzburg and Midlands region.

Further west, mountain bikers from across the country are gearing up for the Sappi Howick Classic on 1 June. Tracking an undulating course through plantations and indigenous forests, it is described as

arguably the most spectacular route in the country. On 10 June, it’s time to quaff wine from 12 estates at the Msunduzi Hospice in the provincial capital city of Pietermaritzburg. The fund-raising events is sponsored by Pick n Pay Victoria Road in support of the organisation’s valuable work. June and July also herald the start of the aloe season, a stunning floral display best witnessed from a seat on the Paton Country Express, a train pulled by a steam locomotive leaving Creighton station.

A wide variety of marine life can be viewed on one of the three artificial reefs created by the Oceanographic Research Institute. During the 1990s, an old Portuguese prawn trawler, the Fantao, and a decommissioned floating crane were towed out to sea and sunk. In addition to this, a third reef was created when The Fame sunk in these waters in 2000. Additional scuba diving spots are the Sheffield Reef, Big Bream Reef and Lemon Fish reef. 32 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN June-July 2016

community, staff and emergency services. This year’s event coincides with the 40th celebration of June 16 and provides a platform for the youth of the world to showcase their talent and highlight global integration through sport. KwaDukuza is ready to host all our visitors and provide the surfers, from the Junior Series to the world’s best professionals, with an unforgettable experience that will encourage you to become brand ambassadors for Ballito and South Africa in general.”

The 2015 Ballito Pro field included 17 of the world’s top 34 ranked surfers and was won by Alejo Muniz whose haul of 10 000 points contributed significantly to the Brazilian’s qualification for the prestigious 2016 WSL Championship Tour (CT). This year’s expanded 112-man field provides the local WSL Africa registered surfers with invaluable experience competing against the world’s best, along with opportunities to earn prize-money and coveted rankings points while competing in their home surf.

Continuing its storied 47 year legacy as the world’s longest running professional surfing event, the Ballito Pro will be bigger and better in all aspects in 2016 as it again welcomes the support of global apparel and equipment giant Billabong, which has added its acclaimed and long running junior series to the mix this year.

Points received in the Ballito Women’s Pro count towards the annual WSL Africa titles and ensures that the country’s top female competitors qualify for preferential seeding into international events. And competitors aged 18-and-under in the Billabong Junior Series will be striving for the prestigious event titles and selection for the WSL Africa squad that is invited to the annual WSL Junior Championships.

“Billabong is once again really proud to be the presenting sponsor of the 2016 Ballito Pro,” said Billabong SA Group Marketing Manager, Chad D’Arcy. “Last year’s event was a phenomenal success and we are looking to build on what we achieved in 2015. Working with KwaDukuza was such a pleasure and we can’t wait to be back in Ballito again. We will be adding a junior surfing event as part of our annual Billabong Junior Series, which will bring another exciting element into the schedule.”

“It’s fantastic for South African surfing, KwaDukuza, Ballito and the WSL that we are able to host the continent’s highest level QS rated event at this superb venue for the eighth year in a row,” says WSL Africa Operations Manager, Colin Fitch. “We look forward to seeing 112 of the world’s best surfers produce another spectacular display of high performance surfing in Ballito. The opportunity for our top pro juniors to rub shoulders and compete with these top

performers will help to raise the standard of surfing in South Africa. Thanks again to KwaDukuza, Billabong and Ballito.” The Ballito Pro and Ballito Women’s Pro events will run in conjunction between Monday 27 June and Sunday 3 July. They are preceded by the Surfing South Africa Trials on Sunday 26 June with the four-day Billabong Junior Series running from Wednesday to Saturday, 22 – 25 June. The Bushman or San paintings are one of the Drakensberg’s greatest cultural treasures. SOUTH COAST

The KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, with its ‘365 day’ wonderful weather, is a fabulous beach destination with seven internationally acclaimed Blue Flag Beaches. Other outdoor pursuits include golf, hiking, mountain biking, diving, whale watching and almost everything in-between. And if that’s not enough to keep the family busy, there are also a number of fun festivals and events to choose from at this time of year.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Silence of the Sharks, a campaign organised by famous producer and underwater photographer, David Pilosof, is an event protesting against the over 70 million sharks slaughtered annually for their fins. It is being filmed internationally in no less than 10 countries throughout 2016, and the South Coast is the only African destination participating in this campaign.

For more info check out the website www.tourismsouthcoast.co.za One of the greatest ‘events’ at this time of year is the annual Sardine Season. One of the world’s greatest marine migrations – also referred to as the Greatest Shoal on Earth and the Sardine Run - takes place during June and July each year. It is regarded as one of the world’s greatest oceanic spectacles, where the KwaZulu-Natal coast becomes a temporary home to millions of migrating sardines, bringing with them an entourage of dolphins, sharks, game fish, and thousands of circling seabirds, all of which join in the feeding frenzy. Along the way, these silvery fish are periodically driven into shallow waters, and onto the beach, to the huge delight of locals and visitors who travel from near and far to scoop up the sea’s bountiful offerings. Nearly 500 000 visit the South Coast during June and July each year to enjoy the Sardine Season offerings. These include over 50 events offering kids and adults alike something different, something healthy to do. MTB enthusiasts will enjoy the San Lameer MTB & Trail Run, a new event on the South Coast calendar which takes place on the 18th

of June, the PEHR Burry Stander Sardine MTB Classic which takes place over two days early in July, and the Ingeli Forest MTB event on the 23rd of July. Diving on the South Coast offers visitors from around the world the unique opportunities to dive at two of the top ten dive sites in the world – Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks. Diverse marine life enthrals and captivates divers, who enjoy following shark and aquatic species’ movements throughout the year. During the year, various campaigns celebrate the rich ocean offerings such as World Oceans Day, Paddle Out for Sharks, and Silence of the Sharks campaign (June). This sees sporting legends and global icons standing proudly as ambassadors protecting this pristine piece of paradise and its inhabitants, known as the KZN South Coast.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

ELEPHANT COAST

The Elephant Coast is considered by many as one of South Africa’s most beautiful and unspoilt areas with its diverse flora and fauna and abundant biodiversity. Vegetation varies from dense evergreen forests of towering figs trees to vast sandy plains dotted with Lala palms, and thick coastal forest atop mountainous sand dunes… but the one that stands out, and is easily recognised, is the fever tree.

DID YOU KNOW?

For more info check out the website www.elephantcoast.kzn.org.za Anyone who has seen a grove of the yellowbarked fever tree will not be surprised that the Zulu name for is Umkhanyakude, which means ‘seen from afar’, and is also the name of this district municipality. There is nothing quite like seeing an elephant or two beside a grove of fever trees, literally glowing in the late afternoon sun. Or watch white rhino graze beneath Acacia trees whilst a red billed ox-pecker ferrets out a few ticks. Such are the opportunities for game viewing in this region, and easily achieved with the variety of options available.

Although the red billed ox-pecker will eat insects, its preferred food is blood! They feed primarily on ticks, but will also feed on other parasites such as blood sucking flies, fleas and lice or directly by pecking on the mammal’s wounds - a benefit to the animal is that this cleans the wound. Unfortunately ox-peckers are often killed by pesticides used by farmers. 42 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN June-July 2016

The magnificent Raphia palm forests found along the channels of the Kosi Bay lake system in north-eastern part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park are home to a colony of rare Palmnut vultures. Any opportunity to kayak the waters of the Kosi channels is an experience to be cherished… hear the iconic call of the Africa fish eagle, the swish of paddles through the still waters, or the splash of a pied kingfisher as he dives into the water to catch his lunch. The road

to Kosi Bay mouth, accessible by 4X4 only, offers expansive views of the lake system and the traditional fish traps still used today by the Tsonga people. Snorkelling in the clear and relatively calm waters of the aptly named ‘aquarium’ yields a variety of tropical species like Devil Fire fish, Honey Comb moray eels and wonderfully colourful reef species. The sea and pristine beaches provide the ideal location for more adventures, offering scuba diving, snorkelling and angling, whilst whale watching and fishing provide some offshore possibilities. A boat-based whale watching experience is something that memories are made of, but be sure to use a legal operator who abides by the whale watching regulations.

ZULULAND

The Zululand region lies north of the Thukela River and extends up to Richards Bay along the North Coast and inland into the rural heart of KwaZulu-Natal. These subtropical northern parts offer visitors an area of breathtaking hills and valleys that beat with the sounds of traditional tribal villages. It is an area dotted with game reserves offering wildlife experiences as well as hiking, nature trails, lush indigenous forests and the warm Indian Ocean.

DID YOU KNOW?

For more info check out the website www.zululand.kzn.org.za A great way to experience a taste of what this region has to offer is to follow Route 66, one of the oldest trade routes through Zululand between Gingindlovu and Phongolo. Settlers in Port Natal (now Durban) would set off in ox-wagons on well-worn tracks into the heart of the Zulu Kingdom to hunt and trade, stopping first for permission to do so from the Zulu king. Today’s visitors can include a visit to the Amatigulu Nature Reserve, which offers great ‘beach and bush’ activities, or the Umlalazi Nature Reserve in the little town of Mtunzini where the Mlalazi River makes its way lazily into the Indian Ocean through a zigzagging lagoon with mangrove swamps and coastal forest.

The Phongola Game Reserve was proclaimed a conservation area in 1894 by the then President, Paul Kruger. The area, however, only developed after the construction of the Pongolapoort Dam (Jozini Dam) in 1970. -The dam is the southernmost point in Africa where the ferocious Tiger Fish can be found. 44 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN June-July 2016

Along the route is the historic town of Eshowe – visit the Fort Nongqayi Museum Village which houses a series of museums covering a wide range of local historical interest from early iron age settlements, missionary history and local wars to traditional Zulu art and culture. Also in Eshowe is the Dlinza Forest Aerial Boardwalk, which, at 125-metres long and

at an elevation of 10 metres, allows visitors to walk right under the canopy of the indigenous scarp forest. Early morning is the best time to visit when the forest echoes with the calls of Trumpeter Hornbills, Purplecrested Turacos and Narina Trogons, just a few of the 65 forest bird species in Dlinza. Just off the main route is the KwaBulawayo Cultural Centre. It was here that King Shaka established his military headquarters and here that he was betrayed by Mzilikaze kaMashabane. It is said that in its prime, KwaBulawayo boasted 30 000 bee-hive huts, making it the biggest city in Africa at that time. Further along the route is the Emakhosini Cultural Heritage Park, in the legendary Valley of the Kings, Nongoma, the royal city of Zululand and home of King Goodwill Zwelethini and his royal palaces.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

BATTLEFIELDS

The Battlefields region of KwaZulu-Natal bears testimony to the wars that swept across South Africa between 1879 and 1902, but its history starts long before this with the legendary King Shaka and the Zulu nation creating upheaval among local tribes. The Voortrekkers had crossed the Drakensberg to settle on the land, and the British colonists had settled at what was known as ‘Port Natal’, now Durban. What followed was an era of war, as the Zulus, Voortrekkers and British clashed in some of the bloodiest battles in the history of South Africa, shaping the towns and villages of this region.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Zulu monument at Isandlwana, designed by Pietermaritzburg sculptor, Gert Swart, commemorates the Zulus who perished in the battle and consists of a circular concrete platform symbolising the kraal of Zulu rural communities. Four bronze headrests and a bronze necklace echo the Zulu badge of honour, given by the King for acts of special valour. 46 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN June-July 2016

For more info check out the website www.battlefields.kzn.org.za The wars were fought over land and sovereignty, and played out over almost 100 years. Today people travel from around the world to revisit the areas where these momentous events in our history took place. The Voortrekker-Zulu conflict, known as the Battle of Blood River/Ncome, took place on 16 December 1838, so named because the river ran red with the blood of approximately 3,000 casualties. Visitors can view a replica laager, with 64 life-size ox-wagons cast in bronze, on the site of the Blood River/Ncome battlefield. Across the river is the Ncome Museum and a memorial to the Zulu warriors who died in the battle. The might of the Zulu rose again under King Cetshwayo during the Anglo-Zulu War. The battle of Isandlwana in January 1879 was a bloody affair, with 1,357 of the 1,700 British soldiers dead. Survivors fled across what is now known as Fugitives’ Drift, with some making it to the nearby military post of Rorke’s Drift. The British soldiers barricaded themselves and against all odds warded

off a 4 000-strong Zulu onslaught with suffering just 17 casualties. The battlefield of Isandlwana, which is possibly the most visited battlefield in South Africa, remains an eerie place dotted with crosses and its famous memorial cairns, erected to the British troops as well as a Zulu monument commemorating the Zulu’s that perished in the battle. But if it’s more than legends that you’re looking for, the Battlefields region does not disappoint – there are a number of activities to keep the adventure junkie happy, from white-water rafting down the mighty Thukela, to some serious mountain biking and 4x4 trails.

JUNE-JULY EVENTS

25 June 2016 BILTONG FESTIVAL Battlefields Sports Resort Contact: Dave O’Halloran 034 218 1641

UMZINYATHI IS A HISTORICALLY RICH REGION, RENOWNED FOR ITS NATURAL BEAUTY. THE DISTRICT IS SITUATED IN NORTHWEST KWAZULU-NATAL, BORDERED BY THE MIDLANDS IN THE WEST, THE DRAKENSBERG IN THE NORTH, AND ZULULAND TO THE EAST. The Umzinyathi region bears memories of the wars that swept across South Africa between 1879 and 1902, but its history starts long before this. The legendary King Shaka and the Zulu nation created upheaval among local tribes, the Voortrekkers crossed the mountains to settle on the land, while the British colonists had settled at what was known as ‘Port Natal’, now Durban. What followed was an era of war, as the Zulus, Voortrekkers and British clashed in some of the bloodiest battles in the history of South Africa, shaping the towns and villages of this region. The wars were fought over land and sovereignty, and played out over almost 100 years. Battle of Blood River/Ncome: 16 December 1838 The most significant battle of the Voortrekker-Zulu conflict took place 48 kms east of Dundee at what became known as

‘Blood River/Ncome’. After Voortrekker leader Piet Retief and his party were killed at King Dingane’s capital of Mgungundlovu, Andries Pretorius led a commando consisting of 464 men to a strategic site on the banks of the Ncome (‘Praiseworthy’) River. The Voortrekkers established a defensive position with their 64 wagons (known as a laager) and awaited the Zulu attack, which took place on Sunday, 16 December 1838. Between 12 000 and 15 000 warriors attacked, and in the ensuing battle approximately 3 000 are estimated to have been killed. So many died in the river that it ran red with blood. The Voortrekkers were convinced that their victory was as a result of Divine intervention, leading to the anniversary of the Battle being commemorated in later years as a public holiday. It is now remembered as the Day of Reconciliation.
