KwaZulu-Natal has had an incredible year thusfar. Connectivity to the rest of the world has been one of our greatest achievements this year. Well-timed to service the Christmas and summer demand, Durban’s King Shaka International Airport will welcome three new airlines from mid-November. Turkish Airlines announced that it will start a four-time weekly service via Johannesburg from 5 November 2015 and Ethiopian Airlines will introduce a three times weekly Addis Ababa to Durban service from December 16, 2015. Qatar Airways will offer flights four times a week between Doha and Durban from December 17. This comes hot in heels of ProFlight introducing three weekly flights into King Shaka international Airport from Lusaka. SA Express continues to connect KZN to Lusaka and Harare. Mango Airlines has also introduced a new double daily from Lensaria to King Shaka International Airport which gives us an additional 300 seat capacity coming to KZN daily. This expands our access to Gauteng, North West, Northern Cape and even Botswana. FlySaFair also launched flights between King Shaka International Airport and Cape Town as well as ORTIA and KSIA. Holidaymakers who are going to explore
the Zululand region can also take direct flights to Richards Bay. For those heading to the Midlands; there are a number of flights between ORTIA and Pietermaritzburg and the South Coast has a double daily to Margate from Johannesburg. All of this is excellent news for KwaZuluNatal (KZN) province and underlines yet again, the growing importance of Durban as a global destination. For those that have not finalized their holiday plans yet, particularly those based in Soweto, you can still pop into our kiosk and book yourself a fun filled holiday in KZN. For those driving down to KwaZulu-Natal, for their Festive Season Holiday, be on the lookout for us at all our major gateways into the province from 11 December 2015. We urge all our visitors to use registered and graded tourism accommodation establishments. Durban Art Gallery Durban Art Gallery boasts a wide selection of South African contemporary art. With over a century of history, this gallery is also home to over 3,500 artworks, including British, French and Dutch paintings. The Playhouse Company’s Test-Driving the Arts free lunch hour concert on 1 December between 1pm and 2pm features Ibutho gumboot dancers and Amagcokama Ingoma Yezintombi. They are followed by maskandi groups Amalanda Amhlophe and Imbali Zempondo on 8 December. The popular series climaxes with a twohour finale on 15 December spotlighting Amatholamnyama (Ingoma Yezinsizwa), Champions (Amapansula), King (Country music) and Fusion Musique (African vocals). Sundowners concerts on 4, 11 and 18 December offer more free entertainment outings at the Playhouse between 5pm and 7pm, offering an appealing option for patrons to kick off their weekend with music and poetry in good company. Fans can enjoy a festive season run of The Glitter Girls in the Loft from 9 to 20 December starring Lisa Bobbert, Liesl Coppin and Marion Loudon. Paul Slabolepszy makes a long overdue return to the Durban stage in For Your Ears Only. Presented by The Playhouse Company, this runs in the Drama Theatre between 9 and 23 December, featuring the veteran entertainer, along with Michael Richard, Michael Gritten, among others. Directed by Ralph Lawson, the production takes us behind the scenes of a radio studio ‘soapie’ in a comedy that crackles with hilarity and intrigue. Also directed by Lawson is A Christmas Celebration, in the Playhouse Opera Theatre between 19 and 24 December. Compered by Damon Beard of East Coast Radio, this big-stage family show features some 150 performers headed by Judith Sephuma, Bongani Tembe, Andile KaMajola and the KZNPO. Wickedly Odd – The Night Garden, billed as “a sensational dining and innovative entertainment experience, perfect for year-end corporate functions”, is currently being held in the Durban Botanic Gardens until 6 December. Written by McIlroy and Patrick Kenny, Funny Father Christmas promises to be cracker of a show that celebrates the season with comedy, song and dance. 1000 Hills
When Europeans arrived at the Port of Natal in 1825, the Valley of 1000 Hills was a remote and isolated area teeming with game. WS Field was one of the first Europeans to settle in 1851, and leopards were said to occasionally spend the night on the veranda of the Field homestead in what is now Kloof. Within a few years a wagon route opened up between Durban and the interior, close to what is now the Old Main Road. The establishment of the railway line linking the goldfields with the port rapidly followed the discovery of gold in the Transvaal in the 1880s, and the rail and road traffic through the 1000 Hills increased. The Valley of 1000 Hills is named after the many hills and valleys which rise up from the banks of the Umgeni River as it flows from the distant Drakensberg mountains to the Indian Ocean. The valley has been home to the Zulu people for centuries, with many continuing to practice and live their unique traditional lifestyle. Their colourful ceremonies and expressive, artistic culture give this area its vibrant atmosphere and creative energy. Sapphire Coast The town of Amanzimtoti (meaning ‘sweet waters’ in Zulu) is said to have been named by the great Zulu King Shaka after tasting the fresh water that flows out of the hills at this scenic spot. It is situated on the coast a short drive south of Durban. This part of the coast is a popular destination for scuba divers who come to explore Aliwal Shoal, a fossilised sand dune that lies 5km off the Umkomaas river mouth. A myriad of warm water reef fish and cold water fish converge on Aliwal Shoal to create a kaleidoscope of colour. For those who prefer to remain on terra firma, the beaches of the
Sapphire Coast provide plenty of opportunities to enjoy swimming, surfing or fishing. Nature lovers can explore the Amanzimoti Bird Sanctuary or stroll in one of the nature reserves. ELEPHANT COAST The Elephant Coast incorporates the best of both land and sea safari experiences with its world-class conservation areas that include the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa’s first proclaimed World Heritage Site, and Africa’s oldest game reserve, the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park. Kosi Bay Nature Reserve is an unspoiled nature reserve surrounding the rare and beautiful Kosi Bay lake system. The 11,000ha, 30km-long reserve is a tropical paradise of crystal clear water, marshland, swamp and coastal forests that is home to about 250 species of bird. Canoeing through the upper lakes and channels is a delight for birders.
With this variety of habitats, it is little wonder that this region offers some of South Africa’s finest birding, with over 25 different birding spots, and more than 500 species recorded. The Ndumo Game Reserve boasts the greatest variety of bird species of any protected wildlife area in Southern Africa, with bird lists including many tropical East African species – and the South African summer is the ideal time to see some rare visitors. The uMkhuze section of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park also boasts more than 420 species recorded, and is renowned for its game-viewing hides. There are a number of Birdlife SA accredited establishments offering great hospitality - often providing a packed brunch, bird lists, reference material and even local guides. These guides assist birders with their excellent observation skills and finding the ‘specials’ of a specific birding site. This not only adds value to any birding outing, but is an income-generating opportunity for community bird guides.

During the summer months, generally from November to the end of February, a few selected lodges in the Maputaland Marine Reserve, on the northern KwaZulu-Natal coastline, offer guests the privilege of a turtle tracking experience – watch in awe as these giants of the sea emerge from the Indian Ocean to complete their breeding cycle. Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife monitors Leatherback and Loggerhead turtles in a research project that includes the GPS positioning of nests, the counting of eggs where possible, and the tagging of turtles.

Fort Nongqayi, which houses the Zululand Historical Museum, was built in 1883 by the British to house the barefoot Zulu police force (known as the Nongqayi). Their task it was to protect and enforce British administration following the Anglo-Zulu War.
One such traditional ceremony is celebrated in early December, the Celebration of the First Fruits – Umkhosi Wokweshwama. During this event, young men are invited to the Zulu King’s Palace to participate in various rituals. Here the Zulu king, other royalty, and the rest of the tribe celebrate the harvest, praise the ancestors, and discuss ways to ensure a prosperous year. The Zulu first fruit ceremony is held when the new season’s crops ripen in December or early January. The ceremony takes place at Enyokeni Royal Palace in Nongoma and the exact date is subject to the Zulu king’s discretion. The royal tasting happens in a ritualised manner, involving the use of special medicines created by the King’s herbalists and is intended to impart the blessings of the ancestors to the harvest and the farmers. During this event, young men participate in a series of rituals aimed at providing the Zulu nation with good fortune in the year ahead.

The Richards Bay area offers visitors that are more partial to the ocean a number of options, from pristine beaches to sailing and deep sea fishing. The popular swimming beaches are Alkanstrand and Newark Beach. There are a number of popular fishing beaches and a day’s deep sea fishing can be enjoyed aboard a private fishing charter. Boat owners are able to launch their boats at the Richards Bay Ski Boat Club and the Meerensee Boat Club. The small craft harbour and marina are a hive of yachting activity, and for sailing enthusiasts there is Keeler sailing every Wednesday evening and every alternate Sunday morning.

ROUTE 66 - Zululand Heritage Route
A journey along Route 66 is filled with unexpected discoveries. Stop at a tavern for refreshment and get knocked out by boxing legend Tap Tap Makhatini, walk in the forest and find fascinating creatures - great and small - and take time to hear the extraordinary history of the region: the Zulu kings who lived here, the Norwegian missionaries who brought Christianity to Zululand and how the British tried to change the old order of Zululand. Zululand Heritage Route 66 – follows the road between Gingindlovu and Pongola via Eshowe, Melmoth, Ulundi and Nongoma. This is one of the oldest trade routes through Zululand. Settlers resident at Port Natal (Durban) in the early 19th Century would set off in ox wagons on well-worn tracks and cross into Zululand at a drift very close to the present N2 bridge over the Thukela River. The tracks followed the coast for a while before turning inland towards the heart of the Zulu Kingdom as settlers required the permission of the Zulu King before they could hunt and trade in his territory. The R66, begins at Dokodweni Toll Plaza close to the pristine Siyaya Coastal Park in Mtunzini, and ends less than 250kms further north at the busy town of Pongola but in that short distance, visitors have traveled through the picturesque towns of Eshowe, Melmoth and Ulundi, a world from another time. The Zululand Heritage Route passes through territory that has given rise to events which have captured the world’s imagination. The rise of Shaka and the battles of the Anglo-Zulu War have inspired novels, television epics and movies and today the scale and uniqueness of the annual Royal Reed Dance held each year in Nongoma draws considerable international attention. The Amur Falcons travel 14 560km in their migration from South Africa to their breeding grounds in Mongolia. Their route takes them through Mozambique, Tanzania and then Somalia before heading out over the Indian Ocean to Myanmar (Burma) and then on to Mongolia.
For those with a specific interest in the battles that took place in the region, there are ceremonies in commemoration of a number them in the Dundee region. The Battle of Blood River that ended on 16 December 1838, and is being commemorated at the Blood River Museum and Ncome Museum. The Battle of Isandlwana, the first major encounter in the Anglo-Zulu War between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom, which took place on 22 January 1879, is being commemorated with a ‘full moon tour’ that enables visitors to experience the battlefield scene in the moonlight. The Talana Museum in Dundee offers visitors great insight into the history and culture of the region, and at this time of the year the museum grounds are open into the evening for visitors to enjoy the magnificent display of Christmas lights in the grounds. Bring a picnic and enjoy an evening with a difference at the museum.
and incredible scenery, the Reserve offers a one-day hiking trail that passes several gun points dating back to the Anglo-Boer War. Another town with nature literally on its doorstep is Utrecht. KZN’s ‘town within a game park’ is quite unique as it lies within the confines of the Balele Game Park. It is not unusual to see duiker or the occasional impala frequenting the gardens that line the streets. A birding highlight during the summer months is the arrival of the Amur Falcons, small birds of prey not much bigger than a pigeon, that arrive in their thousands to roost for the night. Between November and April every year, more than 20,000 birds take up residence in a line of pine trees that runs for about 400m along the street just a twominute drive from the CBD. the Newcastle roost is the largest in Africa and is an event not to be missed.

Rorke’s Drift Rorke’s Drift, located 45 kilometres southeast of Dundee, is the site of one of the most famous battles of the Anglo-Zulu War. It is a tranquil village nestled at the foot of a rocky outcrop, a few kilometres from the Mzinyathi River. At the entrance to the village is a traditional Zulu umuzi (village), with beehive huts encircling an Nguni cattle kraal. (main photo pictured above). The umuzi offers visitors the chance to truly experience traditional Zulu lifestyle; be captivated by the pure energy of Zulu dancers, milk an Nguni cow, taste home-brewed Zulu beer and sleep the night in a beehive hut. Further into the village is the Rorke’s Drift Battlefield and Museum, which has attracted much acclaim for its displays of the Anglo-Zulu War.

MANY LESSONS LEARNT ON THE BATTLEFIELDS OF KWAZULU-NATAL- By Ken Gillings Visiting the Battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal has become a ‘must do’ for many overseas visitors to South Africa as well as South African citizens. KwaZulu-Natal was the scene of dozens of fierce clashes between different communities over the past 195 years, from the reign of the Mthethwa chief Dingiswayo kaJobe and the Ndwandwe chief Zwide kaLanga, through that of the warrior king Shaka kaMpande to the 1906 Poll Tax (‘Bhambatha’) Rebellion. In the next few editions of WWW we will publish some of the most significant aspects of these periods of military turmoil? Taking several of them in turn, we are able to extract some interesting adaptations in strategy. The Shaka era of the 1820s Shaka was the illegitimate son of inkosi Senzangakhona kaJama of the abakwaZulu. At that stage, the Zulus were allies of the Mthethwa ruled by Dingiswayo kaJobe and on reaching maturity, Zulus were required to undergo military service in the Mthethwa army. On the death of Senzangakhona, his successor Sigujana kaSenzangakhona was immediately assassinated on the orders of Shaka who then followed his father. Dingiswayo was eventually killed by his arch enemy Zwide of the Ndwandwe, leaving the Mthethwa leaderless and confused. Shaka stepped into the gap and commenced welding the scattered tribal communities into a united nation. Shaka expanded the innovative tactics of Dingiswayo and introduced several changes. These included the short-shafted but broad bladed stabbing spear known as the ‘Iklwa’ (due to the sound it made when being withdrawn from its opponent’s stomach!), the isiHlangu (war shield) and the ‘i’mpondo zankhomo’ (‘the horns of the beast’) an attack formation
which in effect comprised four formations: the isifuba (chest), the izimpondo (left and right horn), and the loins (reserves) who would normally be made to sit with their backs to the action until required to join in the attack. The chest usually consisted of the older warriors, who would initially engage the opponent. The two horns (comprising younger warriors) would then surround the opponent and using their isiHlangu the warriors would hook the left edge of the shield over the opponent’s and wrench away to the left. This usually resulted in the opponent’s shield being pulled across his body, exposing his left side and throwing him off balance. The iklwa was then used to finish him off. Shaka successfully utilised these tactics as commander-in-chief of the abakwaZulu against the Ndwandwe army at Gqokli Hill near present day Ulundi in April 1818 and they are considered to be amongst the most innovative in non-conventional military operations. He has written extensively on this subject and has carried out a great deal of research in the field, including the battlefields of Libya and Egypt. GPS co-ordinates will enable those wishing to undertake a journey of exploration. The book is also a useful training manual for prospective battlefield guides. Above all, however, the author shares his knowledge gleaned from over 50 years of researching the Anglo-Zulu War. He has blended first-hand accounts passed on from participants on both sides to subsequent generations with official or newly-researched information that has become available in recent years. THE ROAD TO ULUNDI REVISITED (978-1-928211-28-0) Zulu War Sketches of an Artist on the March: John North Crealock In Victorian times, it was to an officer’s advantage to be good at sketching. Lt-Col John North Crealock was a veteran of the Indian Mutiny and a skilled painter in watercolors. Crealock’s paintings were given to the Regimental Museum, where they are now housed. In 1964, a selection of the water colours was copied by the University of Natal Press and published in a book entitled The Road to Ulundi. South African historian Ken Gillings spent three years identifying and photographing the sites depicted in the book and was impressed by their accuracy. The trustees of the Museum of the Mercian Regiment (of which the Sherwood Foresters was an antecedent regiment) have kindly given the publishers the go-ahead to republish the sketches, with the accompanying photographs and explanatory notes prepared by Gillings.

Shaka’s Rock, named after a rocky outcrop believed to have been used by Shaka, the great Zulu chief, as a lookout, is a small residential village with a wonderful stretch of sandy beach and an inviting tidal pool bordered by rocky cliffs. The main beach, also known as Catfish Beach, is accessible from Ballito by following a rugged walking trail through the rock archway. Salt Rock is popular for its main swimming beach and tidal pool. The beach also provides some
good fishing spots and there are beautiful reefs off-shore which will give divers hours of enjoyment. Other popular beaches in the region include Zinkwazi Beach, Sheffield Beach, Thompson’s Bay Beach and Blythedale Beach. This 243 000 hectare mountainous region, containing the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, forms an enormous barrier separating KwaZulu-Natal from the Kingdom of Lesotho. This awe inspiring mountain range, with its massive cliffs towering over riverine bush, lush yellowwood forests and cascading waterfalls, well deserves its international status as a World Heritage Site.

Sani Pass is one of the most spectacular mountain passes in South Africa, meandering up to the top of the Drakensberg escarpment in twists and turns into Lesotho. It is the highest pass-road in South Africa and was once a rough trail carting essential supplies on donkeys and mules, and was only opened to traffic in 1955. Summer is a glorious time in the Drakensberg with the mountains resplendent in their shades of green. Enjoy one of the many hiking routes on both lower and upper slopes - there are a large number of marked trails, from short ambles through indigenous fern forests to more strenuous full day hikes traversing rivers and hillsides to full-on adventuring. Be aware that thunderstorms are common during the summer months and although accidents are rare, be sure to complete the Mountain Rescue Register prior to setting off, even for a day walk. Part of each entry fee goes towards the invaluable emergency search and rescue service provided by volunteers of the Mountain Club of South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal Section. For flower lovers, the Sani Pass Wild Flower Walk taking place in January is ideal, but be sure to have your passport handy for entrance into Lesotho. Adventure activities include white water rafting, mountain biking and canoeing. Serious athletes can enter the technically challenging FAST Drak Challenge, a 65km event on the Umzimkhulu River in Underberg. The Drakensberg Canopy Tour
located in the central berg is a fun family adventure that has you whizzing between the treetops, and enjoying a bird’s eye view of the Blue Grotto waterfall below. Keen to get a different perspective and see things from a vulture’s point of view? Try a hot air balloon, helicopter or microlight flight, perhaps with a glass of bubbly and a picnic – check with your hotel for the closest operator. Less challenging activities include horse riding and golf, or just relax, breathe in the fresh mountain air and appreciate the splendour of the Drakensberg Mountains. Music lovers will appreciate ‘Christmas in the Berg’ which takes place annually on the campus of the Drakensberg Boys Choir School over the first weekend in December. There is also a wonderful Christmas market with plenty local crafts and goodies for sale.

The last wild Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus which are the only endemic crocodiles in South Africa) recorded on the lower South Coast was a notorious crocodile which had been terrorizing bathers on the Uvongo beach and which was finally shot in 1864 at the base of the Uvongo waterfall. 46 | www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Dec-Jan 2016
Marina Beach is delightful with a lovely, long sandy beach as well as a tidal pool. A string of hidden bays and coves both north and south of it provide further opportunities for exploring with the kids. Trafalgar Beach, with its wide grassy verges, subtropical vegetation and wonderful long beach, is a quiet piece of paradise. In addition to a great stretch of beach, Ramsgate Beach offers a warm lagoon with pedal boats, making this a firm favourite with families. Enjoy the summer beach vibe with the ‘South Coast Summer Tour’ that offers visitors action packed beach festivals for the family to enjoy. But don’t forget to grab that hat and slap on loads of sunscreen! Had enough ‘beach’ for the day? Venture inland and explore one of the many nature reserves in the area, such as the Uvongo River Reserve – a small reserve that boasts birding rarities such as the buff-spotted flufftail, purple banded sunbird and the grey waxbill. Or check out the selection of snakes and crocodiles at the Riverbend Crocodile Farm. A highlight during the summer months (January – March) is the crocodile hatching, but be sure to check with them for details on the hatching demonstrations. Stroll through the butterfly dome, visit the animal farm,
or have a yummy waffle or pancake after an informative and fun banana tour at Mac Bananas. Outdoor activities include hiking or mountain biking in the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve, and birding in the dense riverine forest and coastal bush – 400 bird species have been counted along this coastline. Go for a round of golf at one of the nine 18- hole golf courses, two of which are rated amongst the top 12 in the country, or a spot of scuba diving at Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks – renowned as two of the top ten shark dive sites in the world. And even with these amazing accolades, the South Coast offers one of the very best family swimming and surfing destinations in SA – warm waters, blue skies and of course, highly trained surf / life guards on duty in case the tide gets a little strong in some places and plenty of safety offered all round.
