What would the festive season be without KickstArt’s annual panto? Durban’s multi awarding winning production house presents SINBAD THE SAILOR at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from 1 December until 7 January. Written and directed by Steven Stead and designed by Greg King, this year’s panto is a riotous romp over the Seven Seas, in the company of the famous sailor, Sinbad, and his madcap crew and family! With sets and costumes that evoke the exotic mystery and magic of the Arabian Nights, and exciting music and dance, inspired by Bollywood, the colourful show is a must for the entire family! It stars Lyle Buxton as Sinbad, Bryan Hiles as Dame Donna Kebab, Darren King as Long John Slither, Belinda Henwood as Morgiana the Magnificent, and Amanda Kunene as Princess Marina. Also featuring Marion Loudon, Nhlakanipho Manqele and Mothokozisi Zulu. Performances are at 2.30pm Tues-Sun, 7pm Fri. No performances Christmas day or New Year’s Day. McIlroy and Kenny have concocted an uproarious narrative whose off-the-wall, dumb-and-dumber style melds the joyous absurdities of the world of Roald Dahl, with a hint of the lusty antics that underpin the much-loved Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. This plays at Olive Tree Church, Florida Road, Morningside. Enjoy a delicious mix of song and physical theatre, with lots interaction for the young ones. The cast also includes a line-up of talented youngsters. Performances are on 7 December at 12h00; 8 December at 12h00 and 14h30; and from 11 December to 16 December at 12h00. Tickets are R85 per person. Book via Webtickets at selected Pick ’n Pay outlets, or online at www.webtickets.co.za. For more information, email info@webtickets.co.za or call 086 111 0005. PIETERMARITZBURG

MIDLANDS

There’s much to keep you busy this summer in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. Walk through farmlands and forests, cycle across the rolling hills, and explore country lanes. This is where quaint coffee shops and morning markets come to life, and a wealth of creative studios offer everything from life-size bronze sculptures and wrought iron homeware to intricate glass beads fashioned with care.

This region, rich with lakes, dams and waterfalls, is a fly fisherman’s dream – add to that nature reserves and forests and you’re set for a variety of outdoor adventure activities. From trail running and hiking, to mountain biking, horse riding and paddling – you’ll find your chosen activity here. The Karkloof Canopy Tour offers adrenalin junkies a rush as you whizz past towering trees, cliff faces dotted with orchids, and over a pristine forest floor… and hot-air ballooning enables you to view it all from above. If you’re a water sport enthusiast, be sure to head to Midmar Dam where the vast shimmering waters are a popular venue for windsurfing, sailing, boating, canoeing and fishing. And if bass fishing is your thing, the Albert Falls Dam is rated as one of the best bass fishing spots in the country. Pick up a Midlands Meander map and explore some of the routes offering visitors easy directions to a wealth of fabulous cuisine, historic landmarks, artist studios and ‘shop till you drop’ opportunities to find that perfect gift. And talking of gifts, at this time of year there are a number of Christmas markets selling everything from hand-made

gifts and crafts, to fresh produce and décor. Every Saturday and Sunday you can browse the Christmas Gift Exhibition in Howick, or check out the Baynesfield Christmas Fair (3rd December) and the Dunrobin Christmas Market (8th December). From an activities and entertainment point of view you won’t be disappointed, check out the diary for details on the Christmas night trail, and a variety of musical events and comedy shows. Be sure to pop in to the Mandela Capture Site to view the remarkable sculpture that marks the place where former president, Nelson Mandela, was captured. Alongside the sculpture is a temporary exhibition telling the story of Nelson Mandela’s journey from comrade, leader, prisoner and negotiator, to statesman. And if you’re just passing through, be sure to stop in at the Midlands Kitchen, located just off the N3 near Nottingham Road. Here you will find a collection of 15 restaurants creating wonderfully fresh artisan food from locally sourced produce - just what you need when journeying through this wonderful region… and maybe decide to stay and explore.

DID YOU KNOW? The first flock of sheep to arrive at the Nottingham Road settlement was in 1866, when hardy adventurers arrived at the end of a thousand-plus kilometre overland journey from the Cape Colony! This addition to the menu greatly pleased the local San people, who were adept at stock theft and had managed to outwit the English Army. This resulted in the lethal 1869 Reprisal, launched from Fort Nottingham, that finally turned the ‘frontier war’ in the settlers’ favour… this was just nail in the San’s collective coffin.

ZULULAND Feel the hot African sun, experience the vibrant Zulu culture, gaze upon the cobalt blue Indian Ocean and walk through indigenous forests. This is Zululand, fondly known as the ‘place of the people of heaven’ and the ‘heartland of the Zulu nation’. It is an area pulsates with the sounds of traditional villages, a place where you will enjoy the wide welcoming smiles extended to you by the local people, a place of unforgettable wildlife adventures, traditional Zulu culture and heartfelt hospitality. Start your Zululand adventure in the pretty village of Mtunzini, home to the rare Palmnut vulture, the Raffia Palm Monument and the Umlalazi Nature Reserve. Activities include boating, canoeing and fishing on the lagoon, bird watching, as well as walking through the pristine coastal forest and mangrove swamps. Take the easy walk through the mangrove swamp near the main parking area, and besides great examples of black and white mangrove, you get to walk past Dunn’s Pool – a man-made ‘bathing area’ dug out of the banks of the Mlalazi River, safe from crocodiles and hippos. John Dunn was a legendary hunter, trader and the white chief of Zululand. Follow the Zululand Heritage Route, known as Route 66, for greater insight into the history of the region. The Fort Nongqayi Museum Village in Eshowe covers a wide range of local interests, from natural history to missionary history, and from wars between kingdoms to battles against the tsetse fly. Along the route one can experience Zulu culture and hospitality first hand at Shakaland

or Simunye Zulu Village – be greeted with traditional dance, learn the culture and sip on Zulu beer… and then pop into a roadside market for fresh fruit and locally made curios. The Mtonjaneni Zulu Historical Museum has an exceptional display of artifacts from the Anglo Zulu War, and from here a guided tour of King Dingane’s Spring can be undertaken. Delve further into Zulu history and culture as you travel along this route through Ulundi and Nongoma towards the game reserve rich area of Pongola. If you choose to stay coastal, then be sure to include the Richards Bay area for its pristine beaches, sailing, kayaking and deep sea fishing. The popular swimming beaches are Alkanstrand and Newark Beach. There are a number of popular fishing beaches and a day’s deep sea fishing can be enjoyed aboard a private fishing charter – be sure to include a sunset harbour cruise to your itinerary followed by cocktails on the Tuzi Gazi Waterfront.

DID YOU KNOW? While on a hunting trip to Zululand, John Dunn met Cetshwayo (who was to become king), and because of his British connections was asked to become his advisor. He accepted and was made chief of the fertile coastal area stretching from the Thukela River to the Mhlatuze River in the north, where he increasingly adopted the culture and customs of the Zulu, having 48 Zulu wives and 117 children! He is buried on his farm Emoyeni outside Mtunzini.

MUST DO... ZULULAND Thula Thula - this private game reserve, with its stylish décor and superb cuisine offers a very unique and different experience. It is home to a wide variety of game like elephant, buffalo, rhino, leopard, giraffe and birds. Thula Thula has centuries of cultural and wildlife heritage, and was once the private hunting grounds of King Shaka, founder of the Zulu Empire. The first historic meeting between Shaka and his father, which set the stage for the creation of the Zulu nation, took place at Thula Thula, which means peace and tranquillity. A trip to Thula Thula gets visitors up close with the elephant herd immortalised in Lawrence Anthony’s bestselling books, but that is not all…from French Cuisine to cutting edge conversation, this is a destination with so much to give! The Thula Thula Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre is an exciting joint venture, created in partnership with Thula Thula Game Reserve, Fundimvelo Community Conservation Trust and international animal welfare organisation FOUR PAWS, for the purpose of rescue, care and protection of wildlife, conservation education and community involvement. Previously called the Thula Thula Rhino Orphanage, dramatic events which took place on the 21st of February this year caused the project to enter under its former management. The facility has now reopened under the auspices of the Thula Thula game reserve management and administration to take in all injured and orphaned wildlife to treat & care for them and rehabilitate them back into the wild.

Only 2 hours from Durban and 45 minutes from Richards Bay. Experience the best Safari and finest cuisine at the oldest Private Game Reserve in Zululand.

BATTLEFIELDS With its picturesque landscapes of rolling plains, rocky hills and undulating valleys it’s hard to imagine the battles that were fought and the hardships endured. This region, with more recorded battlefields than anywhere else in Africa, is the place to discover another facet of the battles fought between Zulu, Brit and Boer. This is where Shaka, Winston Churchill, Mahatma Gandhi and General Louis Botha once walked, and where the death of the Prince Imperial of France saw the end of the last Napoleon. For those with specific interest in the battles that took place in the region, there are a number of significant battles to remember at this time of year. The Battle of Blood River, which culminated on the 16th of December 1838, was a battle between the Zulus and the Boers - so named because the waters of the Ncome River flowed red with the blood of slain Zulus. The Battle of Isandlwana was the first major encounter in the Anglo-Zulu War between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom, and took place on the 22nd of January 1879 (this is being commemorated with a re-enactment at the battle site), and the Battle of Rorke’s Drift, which took place later that same day and into the evening. Others were the worldfamous 118-day Siege of Ladysmith by Boer forces (2 November 1899 to 28 February 1900), the Battle of Colenso which took place on the 15th of December 1899, the Battle of Spioenkop on the 24th of January 1900, as well as the Battle of the Thukela Heights (12 to 28 February 1900), which was, until WW2, the biggest battle fought by the British in Africa. The Spioenkop Battlefield has been described as one of the best-preserved battlefields in the world and boasts having three future world figures present during

the battle - Louis Botha, who became South Africa’s first Prime Minister and helped to draft the constitution of the League of Nations (later the United Nations), Winston Churchill, and a young Indian stretcher bearer named Mohandas Gandhi – later the Mahatma. For those pressed for time, a visit to the Talana Museum in Dundee gives an overview of the battles of the region. And at this time of the year the museum grounds are open into the evening for visitors to enjoy the magnificent display of Christmas lights in the grounds – bring a picnic and enjoy an evening with a difference at the museum. The one-day hiking trail through the Vryheid Hill Nature Reserve not only gives you the opportunity of looking out for a number of endemic bird species, including the blue cane, ground woodpecker and olive bushshrike, but passes several gun points dating back to the Anglo-Boer War. Another town with nature literally on its doorstep is Utrecht. KZN’s ‘town within a game park’ is unique as it lies within the confines of the Balele Game Park. It is not unusual to see duiker or the occasional impala frequenting the gardens that line the streets.

DID YOU KNOW? The Ncome River (Blood River) has its source in the hills near Utrecht and is a tributary of the Buffalo River which flows into the uThukela River. The Ncome River Vlei is one of the biggest inland wetlands in South Africa and is a wintering place for a variety migratory water birds.

NORTH COAST Come and celebrate summer on the Zulu Kingdom’s Dolphin Coast! This region is popular for its sunny beaches, warm waters and fun-filled holidays. This shoreline offers a perfect combination of golden beaches and sheltered coves for perfect beach fun… sun, surf, fishing, horseback beach rides or snorkelling – and is a playground for the bottlenose dolphins which can be seen frolicking in the waters close to shore all year round. Holiday time on the North Coast is all about the fun of being outdoors and enjoying the sunshine. And no holiday is complete without enjoying the warm waters of the Indian Ocean – from the exhilarating surf breaks, to paddling in the shallows with the kids, exploring the rocky shores, or relaxing on golden beaches. Ballito, the region’s largest town, has a number of excellent swimming beaches as well as a scenic boardwalk. Not only can you enjoy fabulous walks and great views, but the more energetic can hike all the way to Salt Rock for even more spectacular views. This hike takes you through a tunnel which is best attempted at low tide. Popular swimming beaches are Willard Beach and Clarke Bay. Salmon Bay is popular with the surfing crowd, whilst the Ballito Tidal Pool remains a firm favourite for families with kids. Shaka’s Rock is a small residential village with a wonderful stretch of sandy beach and an inviting tidal pool bordered by rocky cliffs. Salt Rock offers great snorkelling and spearfishing. All the way along this coastline are fabulous beaches, some quiet and peaceful with the tranquil sounds of nature and the crashing of the ocean, others lively with children’s play areas, water sports and sometimes entertainment. Suffice it to say, visitors

to the region are spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches! Beyond the beach, keen golfers will appreciate the sweeping fairways of Umhlali’s golf course at the Umhlali Country Club, the beautiful setting of Prince’s Grant, and the internationally designed golf course at Zimbali. Adventurous activities abound within a few minutes of the seafront, along with crocodile and animal farms for the curious-minded. River quad biking trails, horse riding, coastal microlight trips, beach and off-shore angling are just some of the memorable holiday encounters available. Still need to do some Christmas shopping? Check out the weekly Sugar Rush Saturday Market, the Litchi Orchard Farmers’ Market (9th December) or the annual Chantilly Christmas Market (2nd December) in the country village of Darnall for beautifully handcrafted gifts, art and crafts, as well as delicious food and live entertainment. Alternatively, shop till you drop at one of the up-market Ballito shopping malls. Holiday festivities in Ballito include the Beer Brandy & Braai Festival and the Litchi Orchard Rum Fest (both on the 16th December), as well as its popular New Year’s Eve Party.

DID YOU KNOW? The litchi trees at the popular Litchi Orchard are around 100 years old! This tropical tree, Litchi chinensis, is native to China and have been known to South Africa since around 1875. This deliciously juicy and sweet fruit is synonymous with summer holiday as it generally fruits from early December to mid-January.

UKHAHLAMBA

DRAKENSBERG

Summer is a glorious time in the KwaZulu-Natal Drakensberg, with the mountains resplendent in their shades of green. This mountain range, named ‘Ukhahlamba’ by the Zulu people and ‘The Dragon Mountain’ by the Dutch Voortrekkers, forms an enormous barrier separating KwaZulu-Natal from the Kingdom of Lesotho. It is a treasure trove of biological diversity and with its massive cliffs towering over riverine bush, lush yellowwood forests and cascading waterfalls, well deserves its international status as a World Heritage Site. Enjoy one of the many hiking routes on both lower and upper slopes - there are a large number of marked trails, from short ambles through indigenous fern forests, to more strenuous full day hikes traversing rivers and hillsides, to full-on adventuring. Be aware that thunderstorms are common during the summer months, and although accidents are rare, be sure to complete the Mountain Rescue Register prior to setting off, even for a day walk. Part of each entry fee goes towards the invaluable emergency search and rescue service provided by volunteers of the Mountain Club of South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal Section. For flower lovers, the Sani Pass Wild Flower Walk taking place in January is ideal, but be sure to have your passport handy for entrance into Lesotho. There are a number of permanent, mapped trails for mountain biking enthusiasts to enjoy, and paddlers will appreciate the recent rains and the faster flowing rivers – the Drak Challenge 2018 in Underberg (in January) is a popular event. Serious athletes can enter the technically challenging FAST Drak Challenge, a 65km event on the Umzimkhulu River in Underberg. The Central and Northern Drakensberg tourism nodule, is likened to a wheel with a number of separate valleys emanating from its hub. Each has its own magnificence, beauty and unique attributes, from the

famous Amphitheatre, featuring the world’s second highest waterfall in the north, to Giant’s Castle, famous for the Bushman rock art depicted in Main Cave to the south. Sandwiched between these two, Cathedral Peak has spectacular scenery and the Cathkin/Champagne Valley, with its abundance of accommodation options and variety of activities, is also a hiker’s dream. Adventures range from adrenalin pumping ‘escapades’ such as white water rafting, mountain biking and canoeing, to horse riding and golf, or just ‘chilling’ at the winery. Music lovers will enjoy ‘Christmas in the Berg’ which takes place annually on the campus of the Drakensberg Boys Choir School in the Champagne Castle area over a weekend in December. There is also a wonderful Christmas market with plenty local crafts and goodies for sale. The four-day Smoking Dragon’s New Year Festival, with its variety of acts over different stages is sure to be a hit. The Central Drakensberg Information and Booking Centre, reputed to be one of the best nationally, remains the main information ‘dispenser’ ensuring that visitors to the region are equipped with all the necessary knowledge to ensure theirs is an unforgettable holiday.

DID YOU KNOW? The Drakensberg is one of 20 UNESCO World Heritage Sites to have achieved this status on two accounts – its wealth of rock art (cultural) and exceptional natural beauty and diversity of habitat (natural) – and is one of the world’s most important examples of an erosional mountain range.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

SOUTH COAST Welcome to holiday heaven! The South Coast, with its balmy climate, wide golden beaches and wonderfully warm sea, offers visitors much more than just a memorable beach holiday. This coastline, with its selection of golden beaches, lagoons and rocky coves, lined with grassy slopes and coastal bush, is perfect for relaxing and rejuvenating and for blissful family fun. Summer time is beach time, and visitors can be assured of a great beach experience at one of the South Coast’s seven internationally recognised Blue Flag Beaches – namely Lucien Beach, Marina Beach, Ramsgate Beach, Southport Beach, Trafalgar Beach, Umzumbe and Hibberdene Beach. Marina Beach is delightful with a lovely, long sandy beach as well as a tidal pool, and the hidden bays and coves provide further opportunities for exploring with the kids. Trafalgar Beach, with its wide grassy verges, subtropical vegetation and wonderful long beach, is a quiet piece of paradise. In addition to a great stretch of beach, Ramsgate Beach offers a warm lagoon with pedal boats, making this a firm favourite with families. Enjoy the summer beach vibe with the ‘South Coast Summer Tour’ offering action packed beach festivals and fun for the family to enjoy. But don’t forget to grab that hat and slap on loads of sunscreen! And talking about fun, Tennis South Africa launches Beach Tennis on the KZN South Coast this summer. Come and enjoy an introduction to beach tennis with workshops by national Tennis Pros as well as a variety of tennis matches – for great family fun look out for the Dads and Lads vs Moms and Princesses. Other beach sporting activities during the ‘South Coast Summer Tour’ include Beach Volleyball, Touch Rugby, Beach Golf, Beach Cricket and Beach Badminton (check out the diary section for dates).

Had enough ‘beach’ for the day? Venture slightly inland and you’re greeted by rolling hills, sub-tropical forests and banana plantations, as well numerous nature reserves, hiking trails and some excellent golf courses. Fitness fanatics will find trail running and mountain biking events, as well as a number of established trails that will have you enjoying the South Coast’s unique blend of fauna and flora. And adventure junkies will be thrilled by the gorge swing, zip-line, abseiling and white-water rafting available in the Oribi Gorge. Being blessed with wonderful subtropical weather means an abundance of subtropical fruits and vegetables. Dress your Christmas table with locally grown nuts, the freshest of fruit, and finish off that family celebration with the strong aroma of freshly ground coffee – locally grown, harvested and processed at the Beaver Creek Coffee Estate. There are a number of shops and farm-stalls offering the abundant produce and artistic wares of the South Coast – great for last minute Christmas shopping. And don’t forget ‘the reason for the season’ by joining the Carols by Candlelight on Port Edward Beach on the 9th of December and the Christmas Celebration on Margate Beach on the 22nd of December.

DID YOU KNOW? Protea Banks, one of the top 10 dive sites in South Africa, lies approximately 8km off Shelly Beach and measures some 6km x 800 metres. It offers a blend of caves, ridges, pinnacles and amphitheatres at depths from 27 to 40 metres. In addition to a variety of rays, gamefish and numerous species of colourful tropical reef fish, diving here is popular for shark sightings – these include Tiger, Guitar, Bull, Copper, Maco, Oceanic Reef and Hammerhead Sharks, and Ragged Tooths from June to November.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

ELEPHANT COAST Stretching from Lake St Lucia in the south to Kosi Bay in the north, and extending inland across to the Lubombo Mountains in the west, KwaZulu-Natal’s Elephant Coast is an exceptional area, fast growing in popularity. This region, with its incredible variety of habitats and ecosystems, delivers an unforgettable blend of adventure, unspoilt scenery and unique experiences. It offers visitors opportunities for game viewing, birding, paddling, snorkelling, hiking and diving as well as the chance to watch turtles lumber up the beach to lay their eggs, or see dolphins offshore.

DID YOU KNOW? The highest vegetated dune is found at Maphelane, the southern-most jewel in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. Hike through the dense coastal forest that covers this 183m dune for breathtaking views of the ocean, uMfolosi river mouth and St Lucia in the north.

The iSimangaliso Wetland Park, with its 332 000ha of marine and terrestrial interlinking ecosystems, is of huge importance, and was declared South Africa’s first World Heritage Site in 1999. This veritable playground of beach, bush, ocean and forests offers a bit of magic for all who head east this summer holiday. It goes without saying that the Park’s 220km of golden beaches lapped by the warm Indian Ocean are a universal drawcard. The busy hubs of St Lucia, Sodwana Bay and Kosi Bay are traditionally the most frequented coastal areas. Accommodation resorts like Maphelane in the south, Cape Vidal on the Eastern Shores, Thonga Beach Lodge and Mabibi campsite and Rocktail Beach Camp offer a measure of relief from the pressure of more freely accessible areas. At the hugely popular Jabula Beach in St Lucia, additional picnic tables will be welcomed by beachgoers. Offshore, iSimangaliso offers one of the richest warm water coral reef systems at Sodwana Bay. You need not even be a scuba diver to enjoy the variety as shallow, safe snorkelling trips are also available, even for beginners. Popular activities for all ages include boat cruises on the Lake St Lucia Estuary, boatbased marine tours (dolphin watching), turtle tours (November – March), horse riding (St Lucia and False Bay), snorkelling, scuba diving (from 10 years old, at Sodwana Bay), bicycling, guided kayak tours and fishing. The popular Charter’s Creek day visitor area

reopens in December with new ablutions and improved facilities. iSimangaliso boasts excellent game and bird viewing on the Eastern and Western Shores as well as uMkhuze section, which host the ‘Big Five’ along with numerous other terrestrial animals, and 530 bird species as well – many migrant species escaping the winter of the northern hemisphere may be seen during the summer months. To enhance your birding experience, be sure to ask for a local, Birdlife South Africa accredited guide. The newly upgraded hides, entrance gates and day visitor facilities in the uMkhuze section have made visiting this oldest portion of the World Heritage Site even more of a pleasure, with additional disabled access and ablution sites improving the offerings of this ‘Big Five’ destination. With the addition of more cheetah and lions in the next few weeks, chances are even better of spotting these magnificent predators along with wild dog, hyena, elephant and leopard. In the centre of the Park, False Bay is starting to re-emerge as a destination as the Lake St Lucia water returns after a long drought, and thanks to the ongoing rehabilitation of the estuarine system by the iSimangaliso Authority. Camping is available on grassy lawns at the lake’s edge. An intensive treelabelling exercise has added great value to the self-guided walks in this section. Trail running and birding are excellent. Kosi Bay, the Park’s northernmost destination, is truly a place out of a time.
