The Vodacom Durban July, which has become the biggest horse racing event in the country, didn’t miss a beat. Patrons came to enjoy the fashion, the entertainment and the horses. This year, we also partnered with South African Express to bring travel agents, tour operators and media from Botswana, the DRC, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia and the UK, to enjoy the event. Furthermore, we partnered with South Africa Tourism to bring top influencers from Nigeria and Ghana to attend this spectacular event. Guests were also taken on the tour of KZN with pit stops in the Midlands and North Coast. Some 40% of the estimated 55 000 patrons came from outside the province. This year, the event is estimated to have created an economic spin-off of around R260 million for the city and R305 million for the province. Hotel occupancies were in the region of 95%, and areas as far away as the North Coast felt the impact of this event as they too recorded hotel occupancies of 99%. The event creates and sustains approximately 474 temporary and permanent jobs. Again this year, we continued our partnership with the Travel and Adventure Show, aimed at promoting travel directly to consumers. We were excited to see some of the tourism products and accommodation establishments exhibiting at the show, showcasing their offerings to the people of KZN. This was a fitting show, as 90% of the people of KZN, when they take a holiday, choose to travel within the Province. During Women’s Month, we will be spotlighting some of our successful Women in Tourism to inspire many other that wish to enter into this exciting sector. We will also be supporting and participating in various platforms particularly those driven by the Department of Tourism to engage and discuss critical issues for women within the tourism sector. We want to have

open dialogues with the women so we can continue to transform the sector and ensure that more women become active participants in tourism. The province will also be hosting The Loeries Creative Week for the third consecutive year, from 14-20 August, at the Durban ICC. The Loeries will be bringing over 16 000 participants from all over South Africa as well as the USA, the UK, Australia, Kenya, Russia and the Middle East, to KZN. This will also be a great opportunity for the province to showcase locations and studios that can be used by the creative industry for anything ranging from films and ads to music videos. September is Tourism Month, and this year we will be celebrating the month under the theme “Sustainable Tourism as a tool for development”. In line with the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics, we will be using Tourism Month to promote human rights, to inspire the people of KwaZulu-Natal to travel this exceptional province, to raise awareness of Sustainable Tourism amongst the travel trade and the general public, and to encourage transformation within the sector. We will also be running a series off activations across the province with various partners. The aim is to encourage the people of KwaZulu-Natal to explore and enjoy the myriad of local activities and hidden gems. We will be encouraging all our trade partners to put together specials and packages for Tourism Month that will make travel to KZN more accessible. Capture those special Tourism Month moments, post and tag us on all our social media networks and #GottaLuvKZN, you just might win yourself a special weekend away with one of your favorite celebrities. Also, be on the lookout on Facebook (KZNTourism), Instagram (@tourismkzn_ official), Twitter (@Tourism KZN), YouTube (KwaZulu-Natal Tourism Authority) and Pintrest (KZN Tourism), to see when we will be popping by your area to spread the Tourism Month vibe.

Durban favourite ANDRE THE HILARIOUS HYPNOTIST returns to the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre stage from 8 to 20 August. Andre’s ever-popular show is a mixed bag of hypnosis, funny routines, a unique brand of comedy and a very dry sense of humour. Combine all these ingredients and you have a show guaranteed to have you in stitches of laughter from beginning to end. Tickets at R120 are available at Computicket. The 21ST SOUTH AFRICAN WOMEN’S ARTS FESTIVAL runs at The Playhouse from 10 to 19 August, featuring award-winning dramas, a brand new dance work by David Gouldie and a host of other events. SUDDENLY THE STORM, Paul Slabolepszy’s latest play, premièred at the Market Theatre last year to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the Soweto Uprising of 1976. The play is set in the far East Rand, in the home of an ageing excop and his much younger wife. What begins as a smouldering dark comedy turns suddenly into a roller-coaster ride of startling revelations, of rage and recrimination, before the storm finally breaks. Directed by Boby Heaney, the play stars Paul Slabolepszy, Charmaine Weir and Renate Stuurman. Performances on 10 and 11 August in The Loft Theatre at 19h30, and on 12 August at 14h00 and 19h30. Tickets via Computicket or Shoprite Checkers are R80. There is an age restriction of 18 (strong language). HANDBAG - Don’t clutch me too tight looks at real-life tales of elderly ladies who live at TAFTA, exploring their moments of joy, loss and remembrance through the medium of dance. See it in the Drama Theatre on 10 August at 09h30, 11 August at 09h30 &19h00; and 12 August at 14h00. Schools performances at R30 per learner can be booked by calling (031) 369 9407. Public performances are R80 via Computicket. OUR STORY MAGIC, an amalgam of popular children’s stories by acclaimed author/poet/ storyteller Gcina Mhlophe, has been adapted for stage by The Playhouse Actors Studio. 18 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Aug-Sept 2017

This collection of tales offers an opportunity to explore folklore stories through a theatre piece suitable for the whole family. Presented in English, isiZulu, seTswana, the production offers children the opportunity to experience the power of imagination and live theatre beyond the cell phone, TV, and – dare we say it – the fidget spinner! More importantly it shows children the value of our original and authentic cultures through tales based on our own communities. The production will stage for schools on 19 August at 10h30 and 14h30. For schools tickets are available at R30 per learner and can be booked by calling (031) 369 9407. SCORCHED plays from 16 to 19 August in the Drama Theatre. This epic yet intimate family drama by acclaimed Lebanese-Canadian playwright Wajdi Mouawad, follows twins Janine and Simon Marwan on a riveting journey to the heart of their mother’s war-torn MiddleEastern homeland in pursuit of their tangled roots and a long-lost sibling. In this land, where civil war, massacre and revenge constitute a way of life, the twins uncover shocking secrets about their mother’s history, about themselves and their origins. Directed by Jade Bowers, the production features a strong ensemble cast. Schools performances are on at 10h00 on 16, 17, 18 August. Schools performances, at R30 per learner, can be booked by calling (031) 369 9407. Public performances take place at 19h30 on 18 August, 14h30 and 19h30 on 19 August. Tickets for these performances are available via Computicket or Shoprite Checkers at R80 each. There is an age restriction of PG13. Also on SAWAF’s roster are semi-stage excerpts of Puccini’s opera, LA BOHÈME. Derived from Gauteng Opera’s production by Marcus Desando, this features soloists Khayakazi Madlala, Phenye Modiane and Siphokazi Maphumulo, with the KZN Philharmonic and the Clermont Community Choir. La Bohème stages on 10 August at 19h30 and 12 August at 15h00. Tickets from R100 – R150 at Computicket. For more information about SAWAF events on offer, visit www.playhousecompany.com. Also at the Playhouse, catch Stars of the Russian Ballet in a tribute to Rudolf Nureyev. Featuring a compendium of ballet excerpts associated with the great dancer’s career, this can be seen in the Opera Theatre on 19 August at 2pm and 6pm. Booking is through Computicket.

The annual JOMBA! CONTEMPORARY DANCE EXPERIENCE, hosted by the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Centre for Creative Arts, presents its 19th edition from 23 August to 3 September at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre. The twelve day event showcases local and internationally acclaimed talent. This year’s edition of the festival includes, apart from some of the top national dance companies, special guest companies from Holland, Germany and West Africa’s Benin. The dance festival also provides a platform for young talent to be nurtured through workshops, discussions and master classes by seasoned performers. JOMBA! also runs the Fringe programme professional performers, and a Youth Fringe for young dancers. For more information go to www.cca.ukzn.ac.za or like the JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience facebook page. CHRONICLES OF JACK, a tragi-comedy Mbasa Tsetsana, will be performed by DUT students at Durban’s Courtyard Theatre on 18 and 19 August. The production takes a wry look at the experiences of a young student from rural Eastern Cape, and his challenges to adapt to an urban city campus as part of the Fees Must Fall generation – about some of the social complexities, clashing ideologies and tussle between tradition and self-discovery. For more information call 031- 3732194 or email lebohangs@dut.ac.za. The performances start at 6pm. Tickets are R30 at the door, students R20. The KZN Philharmonic’s Early Spring Symphony Season concerts run in the Durban City Hall every Thursday from 7.30pm. For programme details, from 24 August to 14 September. WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

DURBAN

Visitors to Durban get to experience the sights and sounds of this typically African city, a city that abounds with cultural diversity and multi-cultural traditions. From its divided past to its democratic present, Durban offers a wealth of influences to entertain and enthral with traditional dancers, mystic fire-walkers and colonial heritage.

DID YOU KNOW?

The word ‘shisanyama’ (a Zulu phrase and, literally, means to “burn meat”), is used in many South African townships to describe a barbecue or braai where people come together to grill meat in an open fire. Traditionally the site was usually provided by a butchery owner and only people who bought meat from the butcher were allowed to use the facility. Nowdays there are many African cuisine restaurants such as uMlazi Eyadini Lounge offering this as part of their menu.

For more info check out the website www.durbanexperience.co.za Take a fascinating journey through the past as you visit museums, homes and hideouts of the regions many anti-apartheid activists by following the KwaZulu-Natal Freedom Route, which spans the cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg. Visit the KwaMuhle Museum and view Durban through the eyes of African’s who lived and worked here from 1928 to the late 1980s – learn more about labour regulations, separate housing and the subsequent protest action. Or venture into Cato Manor, an informal settlement on the outskirts of the city, and visit the Cato Manor Heritage Centre. Large black and white photographic prints vividly depict the stark realities of evictions, rebellion, riots and suppression. North of Durban in Inanda is where you’ll find Mahatma Gandhi’s Phoenix settlement – a self-reliant community that included a clinic, school, homes and a printing press for his newspaper. There is also the Ohlange Institute, the first educational institute in South Africa founded by a black person - John Dube and his wife Nokutela. It was where President Nelson Mandela chose to cast his vote in the first democratic election in South Africa in 1994. Learn from history and be inspired by the present - and how better to do this than with the ESSENCE Festival Durban, a ‘party with a purpose’. September will see the return of the festival to Durban, under the theme; Firing Africa with Inspiration. The

festival programme is diverse, informative, thought provoking and fun and is focused on cultural, economic and business development that not only connects with many people but benefits Kwazulu-Natal communities and the city’s economy at large. The festival is not only about music but has an innovative component that includes music & entertainment; tech & business showcases; property, art & crafts; lifestyle, wellness, food & travel; beauty, fashion & style. Attendees of the festival can look forward to lifeinspiring talks by; Bishop TD Jakes and Rev Al Sharpton. Business workshops by SA’s own business and inspirational leaders. The international festival brings the best of local and international talent to Durban ICC from 26 September – 1 October 2017. And in between all that history and partying, be sure to find time to enjoy Durban’s vast stretches of golden sands, warm Indian Ocean and revamped beach promenade – perfect for walking, running and cycling. Be spoilt for choice with a wide choice of restaurants and nightlife, or for something a little out of the ordinary head to one a township restaurant for a shisanyama.

PIETERMARITZBURG MIDLANDS

The days are getting longer and there is a hint of spring in the air, the forested hills and rolling countryside are soon to be tinged with green and dormant bulbs wait patiently to burst forth in a riot of colour. This is a great time of year to enjoy the eclectic and fascinating mix of arts and crafts, artisanal produce, sublime spas and world-class restaurants – or to shake off that winter sloth and get active with an adventurous pursuit.

DID YOU KNOW?

For more info check out the website www.midlands.kzn.org.za The KZN Midlands offer thrills on land, water and in the air. The forests and hills offer memorable mountain biking and 4x4 trails or abseil the 107m drop down the Howick Falls – or wizz through the trees on a canopy tour. Get wet as you go tubing or kayaking down the Dusi River or white water rafting on the magnificent Umkomaas River, said to be second only to the mighty Zambezi. For a more leisurely pursuit, try some fly fishing in what are considered some of the best trout fishing waters in South Africa.

The Old Prison is also home to a ‘Time Capsule’ which was created to commemorate 150 years of Indian indenture in Pietermaritzburg, and the Gandhi Exhibition is on display in the new ‘state of the art’ museum. 26 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Aug-Sept 2017

Take some time to explore the region’s rich heritage. Take a walk through the Pietermaritzburg’s historical centre and enjoy the architecture and history of the town. One of the highlights of the town is the City Hall, built in 1893. Journey along the Freedom Route, initiated in 2007 to promote freedom related struggles – start at the Old Prison, which dates back to Voortrekker times. It has more than 150 years of history from colonialism and apartheid, to the liberation struggle and the dawn of South Africa’s democracy – and now home to Project Gateway, a community development initiative. The site was commissioned in

1862, with the Monument Block being the first structure built on the site. Other buildings, which were constructed later, include the gallows, ‘whites only’ section and hospital. The suffering of many people from the late 1860s through to the late 1980s is depicted in The Old Prison buildings – the National Monument building and the isolation cells are a ‘must see’ to give an idea of the torture and horror of imprisonment. Many well-known freedom fighters were held in this prison during the struggles in South Africa, including Nelson Mandela and Gandhi. Other Freedom Route sites include the Pietermaritzburg Station, the Gandhi Statue and the Nelson Mandela Capture Site, amongst others.

ZULULAND

The Zululand region lies north of the Thukela River and extends to the subtropical northern parts of KwaZulu-Natal. It is an area of breathtaking hills and valleys dotted with traditional tribal villages and quaint towns - a place where the rolling waves of the warm Indian Ocean crash onto golden beaches adjoined by lush coastal forests. It’s where Zulu hospitality abounds and you can unexpectedly be invited to share a meal or drink... or be the invited guest at a wedding or special ceremony.

DID YOU KNOW?

Male fiddler crabs have an enlarged claw, which is used both for displaying to attract females, and in combat with other males – usually over the courtship of a female or territory disputes. The movement of the smaller claw from the ground to its mouth during feeding explains its common name as it looks as if it were playing the larger claw like a fiddle. 28 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Aug-Sept 2017

For more info check out the website www.zululand.kzn.org.za One celebrated event in the Zulu calendar is the Zulu King’s Reed Dance, the uMkhosi woMhlanga, a traditional ceremony of maidens held annually during the first weekend of September. Maidens from all over the province and from as far afield as the Kingdom of Swaziland flock to the eNyokeni Royal Palace to participate in the traditional dance of the maidens. The girls converge in groups from the Zululand regions to the King’s Palace the day before the ceremony. The main attraction of the ceremony is the presentation of reeds to the King. Each maiden carries a reed from the river and presents it to the King in a spectacular procession at the palace. Zululand offers opportunities for an authentic insight into the contemporary cultural lifestyle of the average rural Zulu person, to experience village life as happens – a vibrant living culture. For a glimpse into the history of the region, pop into the Zululand Historical Museum located within Fort Nongqavi in Eshowe, the oldest town of European settlement in Zululand. The museum depicts the history of Zululand from the early Iron Age and

focuses on the fascinating cross-cultural influences of the past 200 years. The Vukani Zulu Cultural Museum houses some of the best Zulu arts and crafts work collected over the years, with several of the artists receiving international recognition for their work. The Vukani Association was formed more than 30 years ago in an attempt to revive the then-dying art of basketry. Through Vukani, men and women have pooled their inherited knowledge of grasses, palm leaves, natural dyes, beadwork, woodcarving and ceramics to produce a range of contemporary items with a traditional theme which has created a new market for the crafters of Zululand. The coastal village of Mtunzini, which means ‘Place in the Shade’ in Zulu, is home to the Umlalazi Nature Reserve through which run a number of hiking trails leading to unspoilt beaches, mangrove and coastal forests, as well as the Mlalazi River and lagoon.

BATTLEFIELDS

The Battlefields is a region of much significance in the history and heritage of KwaZuluNatal, and boasts the largest concentration of significant battles and war related sites in South Africa. It is where Zulus, Voortrekkers and British clashed in some of the bloodiest battles in the history of South Africa, shaping the towns and villages of this region. The wars were fought over land and sovereignty, and played out over almost 100 years.

DID YOU KNOW?

For more info check out the website www.battlefields.kzn.org.za Today people travel from around the world to revisit the areas where these momentous events in our history took place. One of these began around midday on the 22nd January 1879 - on a day when the moon eclipsed the sun, the ‘day of the dead moon’. The British soldiers were no doubt weary, and hot - their red uniforms designed for the cooler climes of the northern hemisphere. This was to be the Zulu Nation’s greatest victory. Of the 1 412 British soldiers, only 55 survived. The Zulu army are thought to have suffered the loss of around 1 000 men.

The sculpture of 50 bronze shields, guarded by a life-sized leopard by KZN sculptor Peter Hall, commemorates the Zulus who fell in the Battle of Rorke’s Drift – the pile of shields represents how the dead men were covered with shields by their fellow warriors.

In the late afternoon of that very same day, the second battle of that historic day commenced. Fresh from their victory, a group of around 4 000 Zulu soldiers advanced on the mission station and trading post at Rorke’s Drift. Alerted by two surviving soldiers from Isandlwana, the small garrison of about 150 soldiers set about fortifying their position. The defence began at about 4:30 pm, where wave after wave of Zulu warriors stormed the garrison. The British lost only 16 men. After the battle, 351 Zulu bodies were counted. At both Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift one

gets to remember the lost from both sides – made even more poignant by the narration of a local Zulu guide. Visit the memorial to the Zulus who lost their lives at Isandlwana Hill, where the impressive brass structure resembles that of a traditional Zulu warrior’s necklace, and at Rorke’s Drift, the tree planted alongside is that of the Buffalo thorn – a tree with historic and cultural significance. A branch of the tree, with the Zulu name umLahlabantu meaning “that which buries the Chief”, is used to retrieve the spirit of a deceased person from where he died and is used to carry it to the burial place. In addition to tragic tales and battlefields, there are a number of activities to keep visitors to the region happy, from horse riding and hiking, to a round of golf and plenty of other activities.

NORTH COAST The North Coast was once part of the great Zulu empire built by King Shaka, and the region’s multi-cultural heritage makes for many memorable experiences. Visit one of the historic sites in the region, such as the Luthuli Museum or the burial place of King Shaka at Kwa-Dukuza. Enjoy the warm hospitality of the people of the region as they proudly show you their heritage. The diverse culture, fabulous cuisine and first class facilities make it easy to fall in love with this enchanting destination.

DID YOU KNOW?

While Chief Albert Luthuli, the then banned leader of the ANC, was under house arrest in his home in Groutville, he was visited by New York Senator Robert Kennedy, who arrived by helicopter. It is said the two spoke about the problems facing the US and the future of black South Africans, but due to the ban there is no detailed account of exactly what was said. 32 www www -- WHAT, WHAT, WHERE WHERE & & WHEN WHEN Aug-Sept Aug-Sept 2017 2017

For more info check out the website www.dolphincoast.kzn.org.za This region is infused with the presence of the Zulu King, and the pioneering spirit of the early European and Indian settlers – a kaleidoscope of culture, nature and adventure. This is also the start of the King Shaka Cultural Heritage Route, in honour of the heritage that King Shaka left behind. Shaka’s Rock, named after a rocky outcrop believed to have been used by Shaka as a lookout, is a small residential village with a wonderfully graceful stretch of sandy beach that is home to an inviting tidal pool bordered by rocky cliffs. Some believe that the rock was actually used by Shaka to test the courage of his men, by encouraging them to jump to their death. Salt Rock originates from King Shaka’s days when his handmaidens used to collect dried salt off the rocks at low tide. Be sure to visit the King Shaka Gravesite and Memorial in the town of KwaDukuza – this is where you’ll find the Indaba Tree, where King Shaka held council, as well as the Assassination Tree, where it is said that he was assassinated in 1828 by his brothers Mhlangana and Dingaan. These trees are almost 200 years old! KwaDukuza also boasts

to be the home of the first African to win the Nobel Peace Prize, Chief Albert John Mvumbi Luthuli – his home, now the Luthuli Museum, has been declared a National Monument. Set in his former home, the museum features numerous photographic records, many significant belongings and a life-sized bust of the man himself. A short drive takes you to Chief Luthuli’s Grave as well as the church in which Chief Albert Luthuli’s body lay in state. In addition to history and heritage, this region abounds with fabulous beaches, the warm Indian Ocean and a wide variety of outdoor activities. These range from horse riding and hiking, surfing and fishing, to mountain biking and micro-lighting. Golfers will appreciate the North Coast’s excellent golf courses.

UKHAHLAMBA

DRAKENSBERG The awe inspiring Drakensberg Mountains, just by virtue of topography, are an adventurer’s paradise and offer a wealth of outdoor activities to satisfy all fitness levels and age groups. This 243 000 hectare mountainous region, known the uKhahlambaDrakensberg Park, well deserves its international status as a World Heritage Site. It entices its visitors with massive cliffs towering over riverine bush, lush evergreen forests and cascading waterfalls and mountain streams as well as hiking paths that invite exploration.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Drakensberg is one of 20 UNESCO World Heritage Sites to have achieved this status on two accounts – its wealth of rock art (cultural) and exceptional natural beauty and diversity of habitat (natural) – and is one of the world’s most important examples of an erosional mountain range.

34 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Aug-Sept 2017

For more info check out the website www.drakensberg.kzn.org.za On 30 November 2000, the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park was added to the World Heritage Site list, and is described by UNESCO as having “exceptional natural beauty in its soaring basaltic buttresses, incisive dramatic cutbacks, and golden sandstone ramparts...” The Park is an important haven for many threatened and endemic species, and for its wealth of rock paintings made by the San people over a period of 4000 years. The Bushman or San paintings are one of the Drakensberg’s greatest cultural treasures and over 30 000 have been recorded at 500 different cave and overhang sites between Royal National Park in the north and Bushman’s Nek in the south. When Europeans first encountered this rock art in southern Africa some 350 years ago, they considered the drawings primitive and crude, just ‘Bushman paintings’, twodimensional accounts of hunting and fighting and daily life. Today, however, we know that, for the San, rock paintings weren’t just representations of life, they were a record of the past. Subjects of the Bushman and San paintings range from animals (mainly eland) and humans, to ox-wagons and mounted men with rifles. When shamans painted an eland, they didn’t just pay respect to a sacred animal, they also harnessed its essence.

For history of a different kind, visit one (or all) of the Trappist Missions located in the Southern Drakensberg founded by Abbot Francis Pfanner in the late 1880s. Centocow near Creighton is the largest, and is named after the famous Polish Shrine of our Lady of Czestochowa, later simplified to Centocow. It is also home to an art gallery featuring the works of Gerard Bhengu, an internationally renowned artist, as well as a museum of local culture and the missionary work in the area. Emmaus, in Umzimkulu, was Abbot Francis Pfanner’s last home and reflects his commitment to the faith – climb the Stations of the Cross, a steep set of stairs which he built, to the silver statue of the crucified Christ. Finally, there is Reichenau Mission near Underberg – well known for its impressive murals and stained glass windows. The Sisonke Stimela (stimela is Zulu for ‘steam train’), operates at various times of the year, taking passengers on a historic journey past Trappist missions, local communities and aloe-clad hillsides.

SOUTH COAST

Sub-tropical forests, blue lagoons, golden beaches, rocky coves, the warm Indian Ocean and sunny weather – this is what makes the South Coast such a popular holiday destination. The beaches offer something for everyone, golden sands, tidal pools and beaches for swimming, sunbathing, surfing and fishing. Other outdoor pursuits range from golf to mountain biking, to hiking to diving, whale watching and zip lining – this is one destination where visitors are spoilt for choice.

DID YOU KNOW?

For more info check out the website www.tourismsouthcoast.co.za The South Coast is host to many cultural landmarks and well known historical myths which add another dimension to regular towns and landmarks. Fifty kilometres south of Durban lies Umkomaas, on the banks of the Mkomazi River. The Zulu name is Umkomazi, which was given by King Shaka himself in 1928. During a hunting sojourn, he saw a number of female whales and calves basking in the shallows a short distance out to sea from the river mouth. The name Umkomazi, literally translated means ‘The watering place of the whales’.

The southern extremity of the infamous Aliwal Shoal was marked by the Port Shepstone Lighthouse, erected during1906 – it was later transferred to its present position on the banks of the Mzimkulu River. It has been declared a national monument. It is still in working order and has a range of 26 sea miles. 36 www www -- WHAT, WHAT, WHERE WHERE & & WHEN WHEN Aug-Sept Aug-Sept 2017 2017

Now days Umkomaas is better known as the gateway to the Aliwal Shoal, which is situated 5 kilometres offshore. In 1849, a 3-mast vessel called the ‘Aliwal’ almost collided with the shoal, giving the shoal its now famous name. The Aliwal Shoal is a popular dive site with depths varying from 6 to 27 metres and an abundance of soft corals, sponges, and hiding place, which have combined to attract over 1,200 species of fish, as well as turtles, rays, sharks and whales. The Aliwal Shoal is also the final resting-place of two unfortunate ships, which

were once ripped apart by the upper reaches of the reef. These were The Produce in 1974, and the Nebo in 1884 - they have formed an established reef, home to many species of fish, including 20 ‘tame’ Brindle Bass. In addition to beach and ocean activities, this region is blessed with a diversity of habitats, including coastal forest, wetland, grassland and woodland so it’s not surprising that this is a birding hot-spot. Nature lovers will enjoy the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve, which conserves plants found nowhere else in the world, or go birding - 400 bird species have been counted along this coastline. To make the most of your birding trip, be sure to use a local Birdlife SA accredited guide. Or head to the Oribi Gorge for some epic mountain biking, and for an extra adrenalin rush add a gorge swing or abseiling experience!

ELEPHANT COAST

Explore the Elephant Coast’s dense evergreen forests of towering fig trees, marvel at the lush ferns and wild orchids, the wild date and lala palms dotting the landscape, and the swamp forests with tangled masses of greenery. Hike up mountainous sand dunes, through thick coastal forest, onto pristine beaches and the warm Indian Ocean. This area incorporates the best of both land and sea safari experiences with its world-class conservation areas that include the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, and the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park.

DID YOU KNOW?

Kosi bay is the cultural capital of the Tembe-Tonga people who migrated to the area in the middle of the 17th century and established a great kingdom stretching from the Pongola River in the west to the Indian Ocean in the east, and from Delagoa (Maputo) Bay in the north to the Sodwana Bay area in the south. Their history and culture are unique and this sets them apart from the surrounding Zulu, Swazi and Shangaan tribes.

For more info check out the website www.elephantcoast.kzn.org.za The 332 000ha iSimangaliso Wetland Park was inscribed as South Africa’s first World Heritage Site in December 1999. It is not only a marine World Heritage Site, but also forms part of Africa’s first transfrontier Marine Protected Area together with Mozambique. Amongst other attributes, this marine area provides protection for five of the world’s seven sea turtle species, of which two (the loggerhead and endangered leatherback turtle) nest on its shores, 1 200 species of fish, 100 species of warm water coral, whales, whale sharks, sharks and dolphins, and the world’s oldest fish – the coelacanth. The underwater reefs are home to a variety of brightly coloured fish and a spectacular coral diversity. In addition to marine activities, the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, now a ‘Big Five’ reserve, offers wonderful game viewing, bird watching, canoeing and even mountain biking opportunities. The variety of animals found in the park includes elephants, black and white rhino, and buffalo, as well as large numbers of Nile crocodiles and hippo. The town of St Lucia is surrounded by the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. With its lakes, lagoons, freshwater swamps and grasslands,

the iSimangaliso Wetland Park supports more species of animal than many of the better known parks and deltas in Southern Africa… and it’s not unusual to find hippos strolling through town! Within the Kosi Bay Nature Reserve, which surrounds the rare and beautiful Kosi Bay lake system, is a tropical paradise of crystal clear water, marshland, swamp and coastal forests that is home to about 250 species of bird. The uMkhuze section of the iSimangaliso Wetland boasts more than 420 recorded bird species and is renowned for its game-viewing hides, pans and the guided ‘fig forest walk’. The Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park, is also home to many species of antelope as well as rhino, large populations of elephant, buffalo and giraffe and predators such as the lion, cheetah and the elusive leopard.
