We were thrilled to tell our guests at our special Indaba breakfast that KZN was in the throes of mounting a high-powered global rebranding marketing campaign-and that more than a dozen private sector companies, including several banks, have agreed to help us finance it. We also announced the first billion rand internationally branded 700 metre Club Med beach resort in Tinley Town, on the KZN North Coast and 10km north of the King Shaka International Airport. This has been several years in the planning and needless to say, there is much excitement about the news, especially as the first planeload of international tourists are due to fly in for a week’s holiday in 2022. In the meantime, there are plenty of activities to keep our visitors and local people occupied in the coming winter months because as you know if you want to escape the winter chills, the Zulu Kingdom offers you that. The Newcastle Air Show on 01 June, 2019 will once again see the skies ablaze with artistic performances by the South African Air Force. There will also be flying motorbikes, car and art exhibitions as well as plenty of new exhibitors. The 2019 Comrades Expo from 06-08 June at the Durban Exhibition Centre incorporates one of the sport’s grandest expos and the tradition continues again this year. The 2019 Comrades Marathon on Sunday, 09 June, will start at 05h30 and finish at 17h30. This year’s race is an “UP RUN,” starting at the City Hall in Durban and finishing at the Scottsville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg. The East Coad Radio House and Garden Show runs from 28 June - 07 July at the Durban Exhibition Centre and will showcase products like gardening magazines, plants and flowers as well as the machine and garden tool industries, home appliances and interiors. This popular event will also feature the KZN Travel and Adventure Show. The 5th Annual AfriGospel Unite Festival on 28 June in Mandeni in Zululand, is a family orientated event that accommodates all Africans with diverse cultures in a prayerful event with gospel musicians coming from all over the continent.
The Sodurba Welcoming of the Whales Street Festival is on 29 June at Ansteys Beach on the Bluff. The annual event, together with The World Cetacean Alliance (WCA) provides an opportunity for people and organisations involved with cetaceans- including whales, dolphins and porpoises- to share knowledge, set new standards and learn through collaborating with others. The Ugu Jazz Festival is being staged from 29- 30 June, with the Jazz Festival taking place at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre on Saturday, 29 June followed by a picnic at St Michael’s beach on Sunday, 30 June. Artists on the programme include Naima K, Berita, Zahara, Afro Soul, Brenda Mtambo, Umkhumbane, Unathi, Malini, Lady Zamar, Shekhinah, Mlindo and Mahotella Queens. Disney On Ice-Magical Ice Festival - 03-07 July. Once again, this popular event is sure to delight both young and old as the most magical moments from Disney unfold at the Durban ICC. The Vodacom Durban July- 6 July. More than 50 000 race-goers and followers of fashion will head for the Greyville Race Course to experience the annual entertainment, lifestyle extravaganza and society event of the year. Dundee July - 20 July. The event at the town’s horse racing track will feature more than 250 horses and riders, across various categories. The gathering will be preceded by the annual Dundee July exhibitions, which will be held outside Endumeni Municipality on 18 July. A street carnival is scheduled for noon on 19 July. Durban Film Festival - 18- 28 July. With screenings of cutting-edge cinema from around the world, and containing a special focus on both South African and African films, the festival exhibits films in a range of diverse venues in and around Durban. With the long winter months well and truly here, there’s plenty of live entertainment on the go to tempt folk to enjoy a series of fun outings! On the classical music front, the KZN PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA’S 2019 Winter Season is currently running every Thursday in the Durban City Hall until 20 June, each concert starting at 19h30. This upholds the stellar tradition of international calibre music-making, carried out through the Orchestra’s World Symphony Series (WSS), which launched in Durban 24 years ago. Conductor Lykele Temmingh launches the season on 30 May with a performance of Brahms’s thrilling D minor Piano Concerto, played by the award-winning, young Venezuelan virtuoso, Edith Peña. Temmingh brings the evening to a rousing close with Dvorák’s Symphony No 7. Yasuo Shinozaki, the acclaimed Japanese maestro, returns for the second and third concert programmes of the season. Repertoire to be enjoyed on 6 June includes: Weber’s Der Freischütz Overture: Elgar’s Cello Concerto, performed by the noted new-generation soloist, Alexander Ramm; with Sibelius’s stirring Symphony No 1 rounding off the programme. Maestro Shinozaki’s programme on 13 June opens grandly with Mozart’s Idomeneo Overture, followed by the Austrian composer’s fleet-footed A Major Piano Concerto K 488, played by Sodi Braide. Always a red letter event on the KZN cultural calendar, this year’s DURBAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (DIFF) marks its 40th anniversary. DIFF programmers have been hard at work to honour this milestone with a memorable mix of iconic filmmaking. Organized by the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Centre for Creative Arts, DIFF will be held from 18 to 28 July in venues around the city. It takes the record of being one of the oldest and largest festivals in Africa, presenting over 150 films, while also offering workshops, industry seminars, discussion forums and outreach activities that include screenings in townships areas, where cinemas are non-existent. DURBAN With its warm Indian Ocean, radiant golden beaches and sub-tropical weather Durban offers locals and visitors a year-round playground. It’s a city where unique experiences abound – ride a Ricksha along the Golden Mile, cruise the harbour, visit some of Durban’s historical sites along the Inanda Heritage Route or mountain bike through the picturesque hills and valleys overlooking Inanda Dam. Or visit the Moses Mabhida stadium where you can take a leap off the arch with the World’s tallest swing, the Big Rush Big Swing! But during the winter months much focus is on the Greyville Racecourse as it plays host to Africa’s Greatest Horseracing Event on Saturday 6 July when the 122nd running of the Vodacom Durban July takes place in front of racing fans, socialites and fashionistas. The stakes for the main race are huge, but it’s the title that every owner, trainer and jockey wants to win, and with the best thoroughbreds in the country in KwaZulu-Natal for the three months of Champions’ Season, the race on the famous track at Greyville is guaranteed to be intense. Added to that is the off the track style, glitz and glamour where race-day fashion competitions will have fashion lovers inspired by the race-day theme, “Stars of Africa’ and will no doubt express themselves accordingly! And after all the excitement of racing and fashion there’s nothing better than heading to the beach to enjoy Durban’s wonderfully warm and balmy winter weather. Beach goers here have loads of choice, from Umhloti Beach to the north with its gorgeous sandy beach and a large natural rock pool ideal for little ones to swim in, and at low tide explore the creatures and critters living in the rock pools. There is also a great possibility of seeing dolphins playing in the surf, and during the winter months whale watching too. Always popular with visitors is the Umhlanga Rocks beach with its golden sands, iconic red-and-white lighthouse and famous, and much photographed, ‘whalebone pier’. Then there’s the lesser known Ansteys

Beneath the uShaka Moyo pier is a filtration system of sixty 6m-deep wells through which sea water flows before being pumped into uShaka Marine World’s aquatic tanks daily to keep all the creatures and critters alive and healthy. The wastewater (and a few baby fish) is then returned to the sea via the canal system in a cleaner state than when it first arrived – this explains the presence of rays and other fish in the canal system. Beach off the Bluff with its shallow waves, rock and tidal pools for the kiddies and if you’re a surfer, the famous surf break near Cave Rock. And down south in Isipingo you’ll find Tiger Rocks beach, a quiet, far-flung beach with fabulous views, numerous rocky tidal pools and many great fishing spots. But it’s the central beaches that most visitors flock to - those with families will appreciate uShaka Beach, with its long stretches of golden sand, and welcoming warm water that’s perfect for kayaking, SUP boarding and kitesurfing and is a great surf spot for beginners. The views back across the ocean towards the city from the Moyo uShaka Pier make for fabulous sunset photos whilst sipping on sundowners. Another Durban favourite, especially with the ‘hip’ crowd, is Durban’s North Beach. Enjoy afternoon strolls on the long piers, grab a quick munchie or ice-cream at one of the adjoining food joints, let the kids frolic and play in the paddling pools and surrounding entertainment venues. The paved promenade is popular with walkers, joggers, cyclists and skaters – early mornings are always a hit with both photographers and exercise fanatics. So, whether you’re planning on swimming, surfing or just lazing in the sun you’ll always find the perfect beach.

Umhlanga Umhlanga was initially inhabited by the San people as there was a generous supply of fresh water flowing through the adjacent forests into the Umhlanga lagoon. In later years, it was inhabited by the Zulu people who lived off the abundance of fish in the sea and wild game in the area. In 1869, the first beach cottage in Umhlanga, the Oyster Lodge, was built. Approximately 80 years later in 1947, it was replaced by Umhlanga’s most prominent hotel, the Oyster Box. Umhlanga Rocks became a village in 1931 and the famous red and white lighthouse was constructed in 1954. There are large numbers of marine, wildlife and bird species in Umhlanga, found in the local nature reserves, lagoon, sea and forests. There are guided walks for visitors and tourists. The O’Connor Promenade ends where the Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve Trail begins. Enjoy Umhlanga’s natural Heritage with a well-marked path that winds through pretty coastal forest on boardwalks that cross the Ohlange River on its way to the lagoon. The remains of a Stone Age seashell midden can also be found to the north of the lagoon. The adjacent Hawaan Forest Reserve is inland of Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve. Entry is restricted, so phone ahead to book a guided walk. Contact: 031 566 4018. Hazelmere Dam and Resort, a few kilometres inland from Verulam, is a favourite watersport destination. Trail running Every December, Easter and July, trail runners flock to Umhlanga to attack the area’s trails, which include challenging river crossings, hills, bush, beach and off-road tracks that weave through sugarcane fields. The best surf spots are at Umhlanga Main Beach, Umdloti and Westbrook and conditions are best in winter (between April and August), especially in the early morning when the land breeze blows. DRAKENSBERG There’s a chilliness in the winter air and the beautiful balmy long swimming pool days of summer have been put to rest. But never fear, it may not be the season for icy drinks, but it sure offers a reason to go in search of a few special coffee shops to keep you warm with a hot drink, or possibly a glass of red wine around the crackling fire. Perhaps an enjoyable hike with no interrupting thunderstorms or a chance to view wildlife with no thick green bush in the way to get that all important photograph? Winter offers us plentiful opportunities to get out and explore, so don’t sit in front of your TV, get onto the N3 Gateway Route and explore what this playground has to offer. The chilly winter months in this region are delightful with crisp mountain air, early morning frost and the possibility of snow. The Drakensberg offers some of the best fly fishing opportunities in South Africa, so try your hand at fly fishing in some the excellent trout waters, which include well stocked dams and lakes as well as pristine stretches of river - the Underberg-Himeville Trout Fishing Club holding rights to more than 160km of river plus 60 dams with a surface area exceeding 400 hectares. Whether you’re a serious and skilled fly-fisherman or have only recently embraced this most challenging and personally satisfying angling pursuit, this region has a stretch of water that is sure to delight. If in the Southern Drakensberg, be sure to traverse the highest pass-road in South Africa along the upper Mkomazana River up Sani Pass to the border with Lesotho – some 2874 metres above sea-level. This route started out as a rough trail for Basuto traders who loaded their hardy ponies with wool and mohair to trade for blankets, clothes and maize meal down the pass in South Africa. Thankfully we can now enjoy it the easy way, by self-drive 4x4 or by taking a tour from the Sani Pass Hotel. A great way to enjoy the expansive views and the chance of finding yourself in a winter wonderland – just remember to bundle up in your winter woollies, and don’t forget your passport!
DID YOU KNOW? There are now more than 2 000 Eland roaming the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park conservation area – the highest concentration in South Africa and for sheer size, the Eland is a winner by far, weighing in at approximately a ton and with the ability to jump a 2-metre fence from a standing start.
The Drakensberg region offers many opportunities for you to stretch your legs and enjoy one of the many hiking routes on both lower and upper slopes - look out for eland, the enormous bearded vulture, and the spectacular mountain aloes that flower during the winter months. Keen for something a little more active? Then haul out the running shoes as there are several great trail running activities to get you out and about. Trail Running is huge at the moment and what a great place to get your running shoes dusty than in the picturesque Central Drakensberg. Cathkin Trails offer 30km’s of trails, join the trail at either The Nest, Drakensberg Brewery, Valley Bakery, Mountain Splendour or Ardmore Guesthouse - don’t forget to pay your running fee first. Or take the 5-day Giants Cup Trail from Sani Pass to Bushmans Nek, an easy 12km per day walk, with accommodation in the overnight hiking huts. Always remember, although accidents are rare it’s always advisable to complete the Mountain Rescue Register, no matter where you’re hiking. Part of each entry fee goes towards the invaluable emergency search and rescue service provided by volunteers of the Mountain Club of South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal Section.

SOUTH COAST The KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, with its ‘365 day’ wonderful weather, is a fabulous beach destination with seven internationally acclaimed Blue Flag Beaches. Other outdoor pursuits include golf, hiking, mountain biking, diving, whale watching and almost everything in-between. And if that’s not enough to keep the family busy, there are also several fun festivals and events to choose from at this time of year. Approximately 30 minutes’ drive from Durban, Scottburgh will welcome you to the KZN South Coast with its family fun beaches, Scottburgh Beach, Rocky Bay and Pennington Beach. The whole family will love the sheer variety of activities from learning to surf, fishing, diving and shark cage diving at Aliwal Shoal, tidal swimming pools and finding fascinating creatures in the rock pools or pretty shells on the beach. With some 200km of pristine, undeveloped coastline in a protected area, the iSimangaliso Wetland Park boasts almost 9% of South Africa’s beaches. And many of these offer sheltered spots to swim, snorkel or even scuba dive. Being in the far north-east of KwaZulu Natal, some areas are remote and not as easily accessible (which is why they are still spectacularly pristine) but there are some fantastic beaches that can be reached by anybody in a regular car.
Tucked against forested coastal dunes and parallel to iSimangaliso’s pristine coastline, Lake Sibaya is the largest freshwater lake in South Africa. It has a surface area of approximately 77 km2 an average depth of 13m and is 40m at is deepest. In years of poor rainfall Lake Sibaya is often the only permanent water in the area where flocks of up to 20 000 waterfowl can congregate.
St Lucia Estuary is a little resort town slap bang against the Indian Ocean with several public beach parking areas enabling free access to all. This is a favourite destination for fishermen (shore and deep sea), families and sun lovers. It is also the base for marine adventures like whale watching or turtle tours in season (generally November to March) with licensed operators. Visiting whales migrate through the waters off the iSimangaliso Wetland Park between the months of mid-May to mid-December annually. They choose the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, to calf and breed, moving as far as Mozambique and Madagascar before making the journey back to the Antarctic. An ideal way to observe these creatures of the deep is on a boatbased whale watching charter.

There are numerous licensed scuba operators to lead everyone from beginners to seasoned divers on an exploration of this marine wonderland. Snorkelling, whale watching, ocean boat adventures and turtle tours in season are also offered at Sodwana. And as a cool, vibey holiday base, Sodwana can’t be beaten – best enjoyed out of the peak holiday season to experience the laid-back chill and avoid crowds.
Inside the Eastern Shores section, one finds Mission Rocks with its famous intertidal zone, best revealed at spring low tide, when a short walk south leads to the hidden half-moon bays at Perriers Rocks, or north to the ancient Bats Cave and beyond. Mission Rocks is a great fishing spot but also provides endless rockpool fun for families with children. Further north is the hugely popular camping / self-catering resort of Cape Vidal. The latter also has a sheltered bay offering great snorkelling, and it is easy to see why this destination is regularly rated as one of South Africa’s favourite beach destinations. Surfers, paddlers and fisherman frequent this as it is also one of the Park’s registered boat launching sites. A bad day at Cape Vidal still beats a good day at most other beaches!
Those with a 4x4 and a yen for the wilder side should definitely explore the coastline at Mabibi, Black Rock, Lala Nek, Bhanga Nek or Kosi Bay. Kosi Bay, the Park’s northernmost destination, is a place in where one can sheltered beaches, its natural ‘aquarium’ – perfect for snorkelling, both beach and estuary fishing – perfect for fly-fishing, and boat cruises up the Kosi lake system. The soft sandy roads ensure that getting to these spots is half the fun, and the pristine sandy beaches, with hardly another soul around, make the trip absolutely worth it. This stretch is without compare for a truly off-thebeaten-track experience! ZULULAND This is winter in Zululand… where the warm embrace of Africa’s sun takes the mild chill out of the morning air. It’s a place where you can experience vibrant Zulu culture, walk through lush indigenous forests and view Africa’s magnificent wildlife up close. Whether you’re taking a refreshing dip in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean or hiking the nature trails that abound, you’re always welcomed with wide smiles by the local people and the memory of your experiences linger long after you have departed. Set within the bustling harbour city of Richards Bay is the Richards Bay Game Reserve, which boasts a huge community of aquatic birds as well as hippo and crocodiles. The lagoon, which offers spectacular wetland scenery is an important nursery ground for marine fish such as grunter, salmon and perch and is home to a number of bird species including flamingo, cormorant and a number of other waders – and if you’re lucky you may get a sighting of the rare pink-backed pelican. Once you’re done with wildlife, take a dip in the warm Indian Ocean at Alkantstrand Beach, enjoy the gentle waves off Pelican Island and complete your day with dinner at the Waterfront. For more bird watching head to the Ongoye Forest Reserve, located between Mtunzini, Eshore and Empangeni – it is regarded as one of the ‘gems’ along the Zululand Birding Route for its impressive 605 bird species, particularly the rare Woodward’s barbet or green barbet, which is reputedly only found in the Ongoye Forest! In addition to the birdlife, there are ancient cycads, epiphytic ferns, orchids, and other rare plants; samango monkeys, bush babies, the elusive blue duiker as well as the Zululand dwarf chameleon. A great way to experience a taste of what this region has to offer is to follow Route 66 – look out for the swathes of flowering aloes that dot the hillsides during the winter months. It is one of the oldest trade routes through Zululand between Gingindlovu and Phongolo Settlers in Port Natal (now Durban) would set off in ox-wagons on well-worn tracks into the

Central to Zulu culture is Nongoma, the royal City of Zululand, where among the attractions are tours of the royal palaces and experiencing Zulu dancing and the traditional way of life. Visitors are enchanted by the atmosphere of the town, the rural simplicity of the people and the informal trading that plays such an important part in their lives. Along the route is the historic town of Eshowe, home to the Fort Nongqayi Museum Village and the Dlinza Forest Aerial Boardwalk, which, at 125-metres long and at an elevation of 10 metres, allows visitors to walk right under the canopy of the indigenous scarp forest. Early morning is the best time to visit when the forest echoes with the calls of Trumpeter Hornbills, Purple-crested Turacos and Narina Trogons, just a few of the 65 forest bird species in Dlinza. Just off the main route is the KwaBulawayo Cultural Centre. It was here that King Shaka established his military headquarters and here that he was betrayed by Mzilikaze kaMashabane. Further along the route is Emakhosini Cultural Heritage Park, in the legendary Valley of the Kings, Nongoma, the royal city of Zululand and home of King Goodwill Zwelethini and his royal palaces, and the town of Phongola as well as the Phongola Game Reserve.

BATTLEFIELDS Conjuring up images of brave warriors and valiant soldiers each giving their all for hope and glory - these are the KwaZulu-Natal’s battlefields, steeped in legends and echoing with the sounds of hard-fought military engagements. This region boasts the largest concentration of significant battles and war related sites in South Africa – with 82 battlefields, museums, old fortifications and places of remembrance. These bloodsoaked conflicts that bear testimony to the wars that swept across South Africa between 1879 and 1902, have left a legacy of fascinating Battlefield sites, historic towns, national monuments and museums that draw both local and international visitors looking to experience another facet of the Zulu Kingdom’s past. This era of war, where the Zulus, Voortrekkers and British clashed in some of the bloodiest battles in the history of South Africa, was over land and sovereignty, and played out over almost 100 years. Today people travel from around the world to revisit the areas where these momentous events in our history took place. Most visit the ‘famous’ sites of Isandlwana, Rorke’s Drift and the Blood River/Ncome battlefield, reliving the battles through stories told by experienced and passionate Battlefield guides. They might also go to the site of the tragic Battle of Spionkop, where no one was the victor and where many lives were lost, or the Siege of Ladysmith where a town was almost brought to its knees through severe shortages of food and other supplies. There are also many lesser known, and just as tragic tales should one dig a little deeper into this fascinating era in history. The choice of sites to visit is great, but one way to get the most out of your Battlefields visit is to select a particular war or campaign and visit the battle sites associated with this… do some pre-trip reading and hire the services of a specialist guide – this will bring each battle to life and give both sides of the story. In addition to tragic tales and battlefields, there are several activities to keep visitors to the region happy, from horse riding and hiking, to a round of golf on one of the 9- and 18-hole courses. There are quite a few conservation and wilderness areas worth visiting such as the lesser known Tugela Game Reserve, the Utrecht Balele Community Game Park and Ingudlane Game Lodge – they

Or head to the Nambiti Conservancy, a expansive Big 5 reserve with a number of lodges offering luxury accommodation and game viewing experiences. Adventure junkies will enjoy white-water rafting down the mighty Thukela, some serious mountain biking, and 4x4 trails. Other more relaxed pursuits include a round of golf on one of the 9 and 18-hole courses, the cool trout waters near Newcastle will delight any avid fly fisherman, or just indulge and soak away the stress in the soothing mineral waters of the hot springs at the Lilani Hot Springs community project in Greytown. Don’t miss the chance of ‘ticking’ one of the nearly 400 species of bird that have been identified along the Amajuba Birding Meander. A whole range of species normally associated with grassveld, bushveld and mountain habitats are found in the Meander which is well known for its water birds. Some special species include ground woodpecker, blue korhaan, Botha’s and Rudd’s lark, all three cranes, buffstreaked chat, mountain chat, bush blackcap, yellow-breasted pipit, palecrowned cisticola, the black egret, all five of the harriers, both sparrow-hawks, and most of the kestrels.

NORTH COAST The Zulu Kingdom’s North Coast, also known as the Dolphin Coast, stretches from Zimbali to the mighty Thukela River. It’s World Oceans Day on June 8 and how better to appreciate the wonders of the ocean than by diving into its depths. A wide variety of marine life can be viewed on one of the three artificial reefs created by the Oceanographic Research Institute by towing an old Portuguese prawn trawler, a decommissioned floating crane and a cargo ship out to sea and sunk. Additional scuba diving spots are the Sheffield Reef, Big Bream Reef and Lemon Fish reef – show your appreciation of our oceans by being mindful of the destruction plastic is causing in the ocean.

Some of the beaches to enjoy include Shaka’s Rock, Salt Rock and Zinkwazi. Salt Rock, named after a rocky outcrop and believed to have been used by Shaka the great Zulu chief as a lookout, is a small residential village with a wonderfully graceful stretch of sandy beach that is home to an inviting tidal pool bordered by rocky cliffs. The main beach, also known as Catfish Beach, is accessible along the beach from Ballito by following a rugged walking trail through a hole in the cliff - probably a good idea to attempt this at low tide. Salt Rock, whose name is said to originate from King Shaka’s days when his handmaidens used to collect dried salt off the rocks at low tide, is situated just north of Shaka’s Rock and Ballito and is popular for its main swimming beach and tidal pool. Zinkwazi Beach, just 80km north of Durban, is an unspoiled holiday haven. Zinkwazi (Zulu for ‘fish eagle’) is home to a nature conservancy with a rare combination of indigenous forest, teeming with birdlife, and undulating golden beaches. The shoreline encompasses a beautiful lagoon, where one can go fishing, boating, or birdwatching.
