SANIBONANI and Welcome to the Exceptional Zulu Kingdom

We have just wrapped up a very successful Africa’s Travel INDABA that drew 80 countries, with more than 7 000 delegates from all over the world, to Durban. We were thrilled to announce the new Durban to Heathrow direct flight with British Airways will commence from October 29. We also took this opportunity to engage with a lot of buyers and international media who attended the exhibition. We ensured that they were brought up to date about our latest tourism developments as well as those that are still in the pipeline, which we believe will further boost the tourism potential of the province and propel the destination to greater heights. We are very thrilled to see that the tourism trade remains committed to ensuring that we continue to offer world class products and facilities to our visitors. KwaZulu-Natal’s coastline is blessed with a warm winter season and this has resulted in throngs of visitors escaping the winter chills and descending to our shores for a bit of fun in the sun. As a result we have a full calendar of events to satisfy a variety of tastes. • The Newcastle Air show on 2 June 2018 will set the Newcastle skies ablaze with orchestrated and artistic performances by the South African Air force. Tickets are available for as little as R10 for primary school going children. • The 2018 Comrades Marathon down run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban will be slightly longer at 90,184km compared to 89,208km in 2016. This year’s theme “Asijiki – No turning back” will see thousands of runners descend on KZN from all over the world. • KZN’s Vuma 103 will celebrate Youth Day at the Moses Mabhida Stadium with a fun, family, food and music extravaganza that will see top South African Gospel icons including Khaya Mthethwa, Dr Tumi and Karabo performing and inspiring revellers. • The Ugu Jazz Festival will celebrate its 8th

This year’s theme “It is time” will definitely make this a fashion and entertainment extravaganza. • All roads lead to The Dundee July on 14-15 July 2018. This event has grown in leaps and bounds attracting an estimated 10 000 spectators and 500 participants from all over the province and beyond. • The longest running film festival in Africa, the Durban International Film Festival will celebrate 38 years under the theme “Evolution: No Filmmaker left behind” from 19 – 29 July 2018. This year, we will once again partner with the East Coast Radio House and Garden Show for the KZN Travel and Adventure show which will be held on 5 to 8 July 2018 at the Durban Exhibition Centre. NO DOUBT, THE BEST WAY TO VIEW WHALES AND DOLPHINS UP CLOSE IS FROM A BOAT. The Isle of Capri Cruises offers an exhilarating 2 hour cruise into the ocean on their boat “Bafana”, to view one of the world’s most magnificent mammals, the Humpback Whale! The trip takes you into the Indian Ocean and close to the Mozambican current to encounter them at close range. All trips have friendly and fully qualified whale tour guides on board, to share their vast knowledge of the ocean and its creatures with you. If fortunate, you may have a mesmerizing experience of a mother feeding or playing with her calf, or older calves jumping and teasing one another, seeking attention of the adults. Whales are enormous creatures, approximately 15m in length and weighing about 30 tons. They are very inquisitive and often perform spectacular ‘breaches’ – leaping out of the water, much to the delight of the passengers.

Every year, from June to November, whales can frequently be seen off the KwaZulu-Natal coast on their migratory route, from the Southern Oceans to the warmer tropical waters for mating and giving birth, and on their return, heading for the nutrient rich waters of Antarctica. By law, you are not allowed to approach within 300m from a whale, unless you are aboard a boat permitted by the Department of Marine and Coastal Management. Permit holders are all members of the South African Boat-Based Whale Watching Association and as such are required to adhere to a strict code of conduct and to undergo training. The Isle of Capri Cruises boasts one of two whale watching permits awarded in Durban.

For an unsurpassed whale watching opportunity, make your booking today! 14 - 18 Boatman Road, Wilson’s Wharf Tel: 031 305 3099 | Cell: 082 851 4787 | info@isleofcapri.co.za | www.isleofcapri.co.za

EVENTS

DON’T MISS OUT ON THESE UPCOMING EVENTS

COMRADES MARATHON Sunday, 10 June 2018 The Comrades Marathon, an ultramarathon of approximately 89 km, is run annually in the KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa between the cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg. It is the world’s largest and oldest ultramarathon race. The direction of the race alternates each year between the “up” run (87 km) starting from Durban and the “down” run (now 90.184 km) starting from Pietermaritzburg. The race was the idea of World War I veteran Vic Clapham, to commemorate the South African soldiers killed during the war. Clapham, who had endured a 2,700-kilometre route march through sweltering German East Africa, wanted the memorial to be a unique test of the physical endurance of the entrants. The constitution of the race states that one of its primary aims is to “celebrate mankind’s spirit over adversity”. Forty-eight runners entered the first race in 1921, but only thirty-four elected to start. The course at the time was tarred only for the final few kilometres into Durban. A time limit of 12 hours was set and Bill Rowan became the inaugural winner, clocking 08:59 to win by 41 minutes ahead of Harry Phillips. Of the 34 starters, only 16 completed the race.

FOCUS ON FILM IN DURBAN recorded voice played over loudspeakers at the starting line. In the 1950s, a full twenty years after he won the race for the first time, Wally Hayward recorded his second victory and followed that up with wins in 1951, 1953 and 1954. In the 1960s, Comrades grew considerably, from 104 starters in 1960 to 703 starters in 1969. During the 1980s the Comrades began with a field of 4,207 in 1980 and topped 5,000 for the first time in 1983. During the 1990s the size of the starting fields was in the region of 12,000 to 14,000 runners. In 1995 prize money was introduced, attracting more foreign competitors. The 75th anniversary of the Comrades Marathon in 2000 was the largest ever staged, with a massive field of 23,961. An extra hour was allowed to allow runners dome recovery time for bronze medal finishers to celebrate the milestone. In 2010, on its 85th anniversary, the race gained a place in the Guinness World Records as the ultramarathon with most runners. 14,343 athletes, the largest field since the turn of the millennium, finished in the allowed 12 hours. This year’s Comrades Marathon will be slightly longer for runners than previous years.

In the 1930s, Hardy Ballington emerged as the dominant runner, recording four victories in 1933, 1934, 1936 and 1938. The winner of the 1930 race, Wally Hayward, became one of the greatest legends of the Comrades Marathon, winning a further four times in the fifties, and becoming the oldest man to complete the race in 1989. In 1932 Geraldine Watson, an unofficial entrant, became the first woman to complete both the up run and the down run.

On race day, our runners will start their epic Down Run journey at the City Hall, running down Chief Albert Luthuli Street, heading east. From there they will continue along Alan Paton Avenue and then contraflow onto the N3 national freeway. From there, they will glide off right onto the Market Road on ramp and then left onto the slip road to CB Downes Road and then follow the traditional Comrades route towards Polly Shortts and onwards to Durban.

After Ballington’s domination of the 1930s, Comrades was stopped during the war years from 1941 to 1945. In 1948 a Comrades tradition was born when race official Max Trimborn, instead of firing the customary starter’s gun, gave a loud imitation of a cock’s crow. That tradition continues to the present day with Trimborn’s

Regarding the route into Durban, athletes will follow the N3 under the Tollgate Bridge and then take the new fly-over into David Webster Street which becomes Bram Fischer Road. From there, our runners will turn left into Samora Machel Road which then becomes Masabalala Yengwa Avenue.

THUMBS UP FOR INDABA

The significance of tourism to Africa and its economy was once again cemented at this year’s Africa’s Travel Indaba with delegates from 80 countries in attendance. Overall Registrations reached the 7 000 mark, resulting in an increase of 4% from last year’s figures. “Indaba’s goal is to create a platform that allows the world to do business with Africa and business is happening. We are therefore encouraged by the number of buyers and exhibitors who have come from various parts of the world. They are our valued partners, who assist us to package and sell Africa to the world,” says South African Tourism’s Chief Executive Officer, Sisa Ntshona. There was a total of 1 747 registered buyers, an increase of 14% from last year, while there were over 1 100 registered exhibitors, an increase of 5.7% from last year. Of the exhibitors, 200 were firsts time exhibitors. 23 African countries attended the Indaba. “When we took the decision to make Indaba a pan-African event, it was a deliberate strategy on our part of boost the African economy,” says Ntshona. “The growing number of African countries at Africa’s Travel Indaba has bolstered their commitment to being here. They are seeing the benefit of the expo and being part of a show that focuses only on Africa. The show is for Africa. The media are here for Africa and places the continent on the international stage.”

It is important that Indaba creates a lasting legacy for the City of Durban and the economy of the KwaZulu-Natal Province by encouraging and supporting local procurement. Last year it was announced that the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre would be home to the Indaba for the next five years. This year’s three-day show is expected to inject a R89 million to KZN’s GDP. “This is the 21st anniversary of the Durban ICC this year - a fitting way to start our five-year journey with this award-winning venue,” says Ntshona. “The city of Durban is excited to host Africa’s Travel Indaba in 2018. Tourism remains the major economic contributor and vital in creating job opportunities,” Phillip Sithole, Deputy City Manager for Economic Development and Planning for the city of eThekwini. “Indaba is one of the events we are proud to host as it gives us the results that the city needs to boost tourism and investor participation in the city’s key infrastructure programs that aim to change the landscape of the city,” he adds. Boosting the City and province is the recent announcement of the direct flight from Heathrow to King Shaka International Airport. “This means the gateway to UK and Europe is now opened for investors and visitors. Real work has begun, together with our partners – KwaZulu-Natal Tourism, South African Tourism to ensure that this flight becomes a success,” he says.

Phindile Makwakwa, Acting CEO of KwaZuluNatal Tourism adds to this. “This was a very successful Indaba and it kicked off on a high note with the announcement that BA was going to start direct flights from Heathrow to Durban. The UK market is keen on a collaborative relationship with Durban and that is critical and welcomed.” During this Indaba KwaZulu-Natal Tourism also positioned its marketing on the different routes offered in the province. “We also ensured that there is a strong focus on positioning SMMEs and affording them the opportunity to engage with big business,” says Makwakwa. South African Tourism’s Hidden Gems programme included 135 SMMEs from across the country. In addition, the Provinces hosted SMMEs from their areas on their stands. Another highlight of this year’s Indaba was its partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation on the Nelson Mandela 100 centenary programme, with various activations throughout the three days of the Indaba. The networking opening event celebrated the global icon with local flair with a local cast directed by renowned local director. “We invite you to the 100 places of Madiba and share your experiences with the world. Walk in the footprints of Madiba and find the better person in you,” says Ntshona. A record 62 million people visited Africa in 2017 - an 8% year on year growth. It is also symbolic that May is Africa Month and that the Indaba falls within this month.

DURBAN Durban offers visitors and locals alike a year-round playground with its warm Indian Ocean, radiant golden beaches and sub-tropical weather. A city where unique experiences abound – ride a Ricksha along the Golden Mile, cruise the harbour, visit some of Durban’s historical sites along the Inanda Heritage Route or mountain bike through the picturesque hills and valleys overlooking Inanda Dam. Or visit the Moses Mabhida stadium and travel up the iconic arch of the stadium to the viewing platform, for spectacular panoramic views over the ocean and the city… or be brave and take the leap with the World’s tallest swing, the Big Rush Big Swing! But during the winter months much focus is on the Greyville Racecourse as it plays host to Africa’s Greatest Horseracing Event on Saturday 7 July when the 122nd running of the Vodacom Durban July takes place in front of racing fans, socialites and fashionistas. The stakes for the main race are huge, but it’s the title that every owner, trainer and jockey wants to win, and with the best thoroughbreds in the country in KwaZulu-Natal for the three months of Champions’ Season, the race on the famous track at Greyville is guaranteed to be intense. Off the track the Vodacom Durban July is all about style, glitz and glamour. Race-day fashion competitions invite fashion lovers to express themselves, inspired by the race-day theme “It is Time”. An appropriate theme as the correct timing is crucial in selecting the right stallion for the perfect mare, the timing of the race and the fact that the time of the race is usually just over two minutes. Expect time pieces, in some manner or form, to be on show when the fashion programme kicks into top gear with the national Vodacom Durban July Fashion

Challenge. It is a truly unique fashion competition as it all starts with ‘timeous’ storyboard submissions, from which the ten best are invited make up their outfits for the judges. Then it is the student designers’ turn as the Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Award sees hundreds of hopefuls parading their finished outfits before the field gets cut to twenty, and then down to ten finalists. Anyone hoping to get the inside track on this seasons trends and some cutting edge ideas on how to interpret the theme should book a seat at one of the fashion Showcase events at Greyville Racecourse on 21 and 22 June. These will include the premieres of the eagerly awaited Vodacom Durban July Invited Designer Showcase, as well as all the finalists in the other pre-raceday competitions. There’s no cure for July Fever! Catch the fever at Greyville Racecourse on Saturday 7 July… it’s the one winter fever you’ll be happy to catch, especially if it can be celebrated with bubbly at one of Durban’s luxurious beach front hotels!

DID YOU KNOW? At its inception in 1897 this horse race was called the Durban Winter Handicap, which continued until 1928 when it became the Durban July Handicap. In 1963 it became known as the Rothmans July, a name that stuck for 38 years until new tobacco laws forbade them from sponsoring the race in 2000. In 2001 it was just the Durban July, and in 2002 Vodacom announced its association with ‘Africa’s Greatest Horseracing Event’ and it became the Vodacom Durban July.

Botha’s Hill, midway between the beaches of Durban and the KwaZulu-Natal provincial capital Pietermaritzburg, enjoys the most commanding views on the coastal side of the Drakensberg. At about 800m above sea level, you can see the snow-capped peaks of the berg and the ships on the Indian Ocean. MIDLANDS

As the days get shorter and a wintery chill fills the air, there’s no better place to be than the forested hills and rolling countryside of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands - where daytime adventures and activities keep you busy and crackling fireplaces keep you warm at night. This region with its soft green landscape of forests, pastures, waterfalls and dams is home to an eclectic and fascinating mix of arts and crafts, artisanal produce, sublime spas and world-class restaurants, with a wide range of adventurous, natural and historical pursuits.

There are a number of self-drive routes through the Midlands, but to fully appreciate the richness of this region, at least one night is a must – choose a central spot and meander the numerous country roads at your disposal to enjoy a taste of the attractions on offer. This region is famous for its hospitality and there are a number of options ranging from luxurious boutique style country lodges to family style self-catering chalets each offering a personal touch and sense of place. Explore markets offering farm fresh veggies, piquant pickles and delicious home-made bread… or pop into one of the quaint country eateries for lightas-a-feather quiches, rich oxtail stews and decadent desserts. Visit a local craft brewery, enjoy a wine tasting at a local vineyard or pop into one of the local coffee shops for freshly ground artisan coffee. Combine luxury living with health and wellness and take some well-deserved time out at one of the regions spas - offering everything from an hour or two of massage to a full day of holistic healing

treatments. Prefer to opt for adventurous activities and fun family experiences? Check out the 100m drop of the Howick Falls – add a little geography lesson as you discuss the waterfalls of the world as depicted on sign board, or explore the Howick Museum for insight into the development of the village and its old farm implements. Or get creative at the Zulu-Lulu Art Bar where kids of all ages will enjoy painting their own pottery, or have fun candle dipping and creating sand art. Do some cheese tasting at Swissland Cheese – Mom and Dad will enjoy the cheese and the kids will have fun feeding the goats, or for the sweet tooth, try chocolate dipping. Go hiking at Giant’s Castle, fly fishing at Kamberg Nature Reserve or if it’s an adrenaline-charged adventure you want, then opt for a Canopy Tour (suitable for all ages) or go tubing or kayaking down the Dusi or white water rafting on the magnificent Umkomaas River, said to be second only to the mighty Zambezi.

DID YOU KNOW? Vineyards and wine production is not restricted to the Western Cape! KZN has some of its very own vineyards - from Abingdon Wine Estate, whose vines were first planted in 2004 and yielded their first vintage, a Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz, in 2007. To Highgate Wine Estate which produced the Lions River Chardonnay, the first certified Chardonnay in KwaZuluNatal. Slightly further afield on the slopes of the Drakensberg you’ll find Cathedral Peak Wine Estate.

UKHAHLAMBA

DRAKENSBERG The Drakensberg region – most of which makes up the uKhahlamba Drakensberg World Heritage Site – was once the home of the San people and is rich in rock art, natural beauty and interesting culture and heritage. It is a region rich in tourist experiences, ranging from those associated with ecotourism, heritage and culture, to arts, adventure and sport. Nature-lovers, hikers and day wanderers will revel in its beauty and admire the awesome views, while the adventurers and mountaineers will want to set their footprint on the mountain and conquer its challenges.

The chilly winter months in this region are delightful with crisp mountain air, early morning frost and the possibility of snow. The Drakensberg offers some of the best fly fishing opportunities in South Africa, so try your hand at fly fishing in some the excellent trout waters, which include well stocked dams and lakes as well as pristine stretches of river - the UnderbergHimeville Trout Fishing Club holding rights to more than 160km of river plus 60 dams with a surface area exceeding 400 hectares. Whether you’re a serious and skilled fly-fishermen, or have only recently embraced this most challenging and personally satisfying angling pursuit, this region has a stretch of water that is sure to delight. A trip up Sani Pass, the highest pass-road in South Africa, to the border with Lesotho offers wonderful views and the chance of finding yourself in a winter wonderland – just remember to take your winter woollies, and passport! The Bushman or San paintings are one of the Drakensberg’s greatest cultural treasures. Some 20

000 individual rock paintings have been recorded at 500 different cave and overhang sites between Royal Natal National Park in the north and Bushman’s Nek in the south. Subjects of the paintings range from animals (mainly eland) and humans, to ox-wagons and even mounted men with rifles. Most caves in the Giant’s Castle area contain San art but the highlight undoubtedly is the Main Caves’ Museum, where audio-visual and standing displays depict the ‘life’ of the San. The renowned Giant’s Castle Lammergeyer Hide and vulture restaurant is accessible by 4x4 only and advance booking is required. Alternatively, there is a vulture restaurant located near the Drakensberg Sun Resort, and one near Cathedral Peak. The Drakensberg region offers many opportunities for you to stretch your legs and enjoy one of the many hiking routes on both lower and upper slopes - look out for eland, the enormous bearded vulture, and the spectacular mountain aloes that flower during the winter months.

DID YOU KNOW? Sani Pass started out as a rough trail for Basuto traders who loaded their hardy ponies with wool and mohair to trade for blankets, clothes and maize meal down the pass in South Africa. The first vehicle to make it up Sani was a Willys jeep driven by Godfrey Edmonds and Brian Gray in 1948, but it wasn’t until 1956 that it was opened to vehicular traffic by David Alexander’s Mokhotlong Mountain Transport.

SOUTH COAST The KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, with its ‘365 day’ wonderful weather, is a fabulous beach destination with seven internationally acclaimed Blue Flag Beaches. Other outdoor pursuits include golf, hiking, mountain biking, diving, whale watching and almost everything in-between. And if that’s not enough to keep the family busy, there are also a number of fun festivals and events to choose from at this time of year. One of the greatest ‘events’ at this time of year is the annual Sardine Season. One of the world’s greatest marine migrations – also referred to as the ‘Greatest Shoal on Earth’ and the ‘Sardine Run’ - takes place during the winter months each year. It is a phenomenon that has visitors to the region waiting in anticipation - will the millions of sardines that migrate up the coast be driven into shallow waters, and onto the beach this year? They are accompanied by dolphins, other large fish and the thousands of sea birds which all feed on them. Whether in the capable, experienced hands of an air- or sea- borne tour operator, or simply armed with the Sardine Hotline number (082 284 9495) plus a pair of binoculars and plastic tub, the annual winter Sardine Run is a unique experience that guarantees memories for a lifetime. The South Coast plays host to nearly 500,000 visitors during June and July each year – besides the balmy winter weather, visitors get to enjoy the Sardine Season offerings which includes numerous fun activities for kids and adults alike. Another highlight

in the region is the Ugu Jazz and Cultural Festival on the 30th of June which, now in its 8th year is sure to deliver with its star-studded is line-up of SA jazz legends and upcoming artists. MTB enthusiasts will enjoy the first three of the five South Coast Fever MTB Series 2018 races during July – these being the Sardine MTB Race at Port Edward on the 8th, the Scottburgh MTB Weekend on the 21st and 22nd and the Ingeli Forest MTB on the 30th. For those looking for more leisurely pursuits, there are a number of scenic forest and coastal trails of varying distances and grading fit for the whole family. Other outdoor activities include hiking, kayaking – both sea and lagoon, and of course golf. Adrenalin junkies should head to the Oribi Gorge where you can experience the world’s highest gorge swing and Africa’s longest zip-line… or if you’re looking for ‘fast & furious’, the Dezzi Raceway has a number of events to satisfy motoring enthusiasts.

DID YOU KNOW? During the winter months Humpback, Bryde’s, Minke and Killer whales can be watched from the shore or from one of the viewing platforms in Ramsgate, Southbroom, Umtentweni, Margate and Pennington. Alternatively book an ocean safari to see these magnificent creatures up close in their natural environment.

WITH THE ALOES ALREADY BLOOMING, THE SARDINE SEASON IS ABOUT TO REVEAL ITS SECRETS TO THOSE WHO CAST THEIR BETS WISELY. Traditionally, Sardine Season with its many festive events, reaches its pinnacle when little silvery fish make their way to the shores of the KZN South Coast. Secret methods and sources, scientific and otherwise, are used to predict their eagerly awaited arrival. If you’re lucky, you become part of the exhilarating frenzy that may surprise you whilst doing whale watching through your binoculars or fishing with your children from the rocks or spotting adrenalinefuelled fishermen going out on their skiboats to bring back their catch. Side by side visitors and locals weigh up the signs to see which skiboats to follow to which beach (there are only 39 to choose from) or decide to follow insiders on social media and other platforms in the hope they too can get in on the action. The ones who know the best, though, are the pelagic predators, who cannot wait to tuck in. With them, news spreads faster than Twitter, so follow the usual suspects: Cape Gannets, sharks, dolphins, game fish such as mackerel and tuna and whales. Give your kids an experience that will stay with them for a lifetime by following the sardines as they swim up the coast and stopping at the beaches where the sardines have come in by themselves or where they have been pulled in by fishing nets. Either way, young and old alike can put recycled plastic to good use and haul out their own treasures from the shallow waters or pick up sardines that have spilled through the fishing nets. For those with quieter pursuits, bucketloads of sardines are sold on the beaches and it’s just as rewarding when walking away with so much silver. Of course, the Sardine Run, is a natural phenomenon, and as with nature’s other mysteries, can be unpredictable, however, the general rule is that they can make an appearance any time during the warm winter season, from May to August. With winter school holidays smack bang in the middle of this period, it makes sense to go all in and book a family holiday at the KZN South Coast. While waiting, make sure the whole family is having fun by visiting some very exciting events put on especially for the Sardine Season.

Here are just some of the best Sardine Season events to enjoy: • The South Coast Lions Show – 29 June - 1 July, Port Shepstone Country Club • The Annual Sardine Run 3-Day Golf Tournament – 14 – 16 June, Scottburgh Golf Club, Selborne Park Golf Estate, Umkomaas Golf Club • Melville Sanctuary of Love Acoustic Music & Folk Festival – 16 June, Melville Sanctuary of Love • TO Strand Golf Tour – 24 – 30 June, TO Strand, Port Edward • SupaDrift – 29 – 30 June, Dezzi South Coast Raceway • Maidens Ceremony – 30 June, KwaNyuswa • Ugu Jazz & Arts Festival – 30 June, Ugu Sport & Leisure Centre, Gamalakhe • Margate Mardi Gras – 27 June; 4, 11 July • Mercury Ski Boat Festival – 4 – 7 July, Shelly Beach Ski Boat Club • Umtamvuna Sardine Festival – 6 – 8 July, Mattison Square, Port Edward • 1st Annual Umdoni Classic – 6 – 8 July, Umdoni Park Golf Club • Dezzi Invitational Challenge – 7-8 July, Dezzi South Coast Raceway • Scottburgh Classic Car Show – 8 July, Scottburgh High School • Gamefish Junior Nationals – 16 – 20 July, Shelly Beach Ski Boat Club • KZN Drag Racing – 21 July, Dezzi South Coast Raceway • Ramsgate Book & Art Festival – 2 – 5 August, Ramsgate • Margate Kennel Club Open Show – Agility & Dog Jumping – 24 June, 15 July Borough Sports Ground, Port Shepstone And, remember, if your best efforts don’t reveal the sardines’ secrets to you this time around, there’s always next year, as you improve your predictions. In the meantime, enjoy the all-round excitement of the Sardine Season and its many treasures that awaits your discovery! WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

ELEPHANT COAST The Elephant Coast is situated in the north-eastern part of KwaZulu-Natal and is considered by many as one of South Africa’s most beautiful and unspoilt areas with its diverse flora and fauna and abundant biodiversity. With this region extending from the Lubombo Mountains in the west to the warm Indian Ocean in the east, and from Mozambique in the north to the Umfolozi River in the south, it offers visitors every changing views of a wide variety of biodiversity and landscapes. Vegetation varies from dense evergreen forests of towering figs trees to vast sandy plains dotted with Lala palms, and thick coastal forest atop mountainous sand dunes… but the one that stands out, and is easily recognised, is the fever tree. Anyone who has seen the yellow-barked fever tree will not be surprised to learn that its Zulu name, Umkhanyakude, means ‘seen from afar’, and is also the name of this district municipality. This region is home to world class conservation areas like the renowned iSimangaliso Wetland Park, the Mkuze Game Reserve and the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park, as well as a number of privately owned game reserves. For some luxury will be staying at one of the high-end lodges located within the coastal forest or in one of the private game reserves – but for others it’s the privilege of being able to run or cycle through wild areas, off the tar and gravel and onto game paths and untouched plains! iSimangaliso has long recognised the deep connection that people have with nature and the yearning to interact at a closer level. This was the motivation behind two of the classic Eco-Series events that the Park has developed in recent years – the iSimangaliso MTB and the iSimangaliso Trail Challenge. Both events have been designed to bring participants into close contact with and offer a taste of some of the ecosystems in the World Heritage Site.

If ever there was a reason to take up trail running or mountain biking, this is it! The iSimangaliso Trail Challenge, taking place from 29 June – 1 July, from St Lucia’s Sugarloaf Campsite where the race village is set within earshot of hippos at the Lake St Lucia Estuary mouth. Right from the outset, the event is about spectators and family involvement with a 6km ‘Full Moon’ leg-stretcher beach run starting the weekend off on Friday 29 June, open to all (we’ll help you mind the hippos!). The next two days are far more hardcore, testing the mettle of runners with the Saturday route discovering the southernmost section of iSimangaliso towards Maphelane. Think pristine beaches, the Jolly Rubino shipwreck, dense coastal forest and miles of silent commune with nature. Sunday’s route is quite different as runners track over the soaring vegetated dunes of the Park’s Eastern Shores section overlooking sea and lake – under the watchful eye of armed rangers as the area is populated with elephant, buffalo, leopard and much more. Prefer mountain biking? Get your entries in now for the limited edition iSimangaliso MTB Adventure Tour in September, as numbers are limited to 100 participants!

DID YOU KNOW? The lakes and wetlands of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site are synonymous with one of the oldest predators on Earth – the Nile crocodile. Over 1000 crocodiles inhabit iSimangaliso’s water bodies, making it one of the most important protected areas for the conservation of these reptiles in the country. In South Africa, Nile crocodile populations are threatened by habitat removal, illegal killings, destruction of nesting sites and human disturbance. In addition to this is appears that toxic compounds released into the environment may be having an impact on crocodile populations in this region.

ZULULAND Located along the coast of the Zululand region is the picturesque village of Mtunzini, the harbour town, Richards Bay, where, beyond the bays of the harbour, the rolling waves of the warm Indian Ocean crash onto golden beaches adjoined by lush coastal forests. Move inland and you’ll find breath-taking scenery, traditional tribal villages and warm-hearted people… this is of course the rural heart of Zululand. It is an area dotted with game reserves offering wildlife experiences, hiking, nature trails and traditional Zulu experiences. The Zulu people are very hospitable and you may well be invited to share a meal or even end up as an honoured guest at weddings or ‘coming of age’ ceremony. A great way to experience a taste of what this region has to offer is to follow Route 66, one of the oldest trade routes through Zululand between Gingindlovu and Phongolo. Settlers in Port Natal (now Durban) would set off in ox-wagons on well-worn tracks into the heart of the Zulu Kingdom to hunt and trade, stopping first for permission to do so from the Zulu king. Today’s visitors can include a visit to the Amatigulu Nature Reserve, which offers great ‘beach and bush’ activities, or the Umlalazi Nature Reserve in the little town of Mtunzini, where the Mlalazi River makes its way lazily into the Indian Ocean through a zigzagging lagoon with mangrove swamps and coastal forest. Along the route is the historic town of Eshowe, home to the Fort Nongqayi Museum Village and the Dlinza Forest Aerial Boardwalk, which, at 125-metres long

and at an elevation of 10 metres, allows visitors to walk right under the canopy and where the calls of Trumpeter Hornbills and Purple-crested Turacos ring out over the indigenous scarp forest. Just off the main route is the KwaBulawayo Cultural Centre. It was here that King Shaka established his military headquarters and here that he was betrayed by Mzilikaze kaMashabane. Further along the route is the Emakhosini Cultural Heritage Park, in the Valley of the Kings where seven Zulu kings are buried and Nongoma, the royal city of Zululand and home of King Goodwill Zwelethini and his royal palaces - beyond this is the Phongola Game Reserve. The Phongola River runs through this game reserve as it makes its way into the Phongolapoort Dam (also known as Lake Jozini), which is home to the ferocious tiger fish. Game viewing opportunities abound as visitors have the opportunity of watching game from a boat or game viewing vehicle – the adventurous can even experience rhino tracking on foot, or have the opportunity of watching elephants frolicking along the edges of the dam.

DID YOU KNOW? In Zulu, vultures are called Inqe, which means ‘the one that purifies the land’. They do nature’s dirty work by cleaning up the remains of dead animals thereby preventing the spread of disease. As their presence often reveals the location of a dead animal, poachers actively target them by poisoning a carcass – in addition to this vulture heads are used in traditional medicine as they are erroneously believed to be effective in providing clairvoyant powers. This has resulted in vultures becoming endangered.

BATTLEFIELDS The KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields Route boasts the largest concentration of significant battles and war related sites in South Africa – with 82 battlefields, museums, old fortifications and places of remembrance bearing testimony to the wars that swept across South Africa between 1879 and 1902. But the region’s history starts long before this, with the legendary King Shaka and the Zulu nation creating upheaval among local tribes.

The Voortrekkers had crossed the Drakensberg to settle on the land, and the British colonists had settled at what was known as ‘Port Natal’, now Durban. What followed was an era of war, as the Zulus, Voortrekkers and British clashed in some of the bloodiest battles in the history of South Africa, shaping the towns and villages of this region. The wars were fought over land and sovereignty, and played out over almost 100 years. Today people travel from around the world to revisit the areas where these momentous events in our history took place. Most visit the ‘famous’ sites of Isandlwana, Rorke’s Drift and the Blood River/Ncome battlefield, reliving the battles through stories told by experienced and passionate Battlefield guides. They might also go to the site of the tragic Battle of Spionkop, where no one was the victor and many lives were lost, or the Siege of Ladysmith where a town was almost brought to its knees through severe shortages of food and other supplies. There are also many lesser known, and just as tragic tales should one dig a little deeper into this fascinating era in history.

One way to get the most out of your Battlefields visit is to select a particular war or campaign and visit the battle sites associated with this… do some pre-trip reading and hire the services of a specialist guide – this will bring each battle to life and give both sides of the story. In addition to tragic tales and battlefields, there are a number of activities to keep visitors to the region happy, from horse riding and hiking, to a round of golf on one of the 9- and 18-hole courses. There are a number of conservation and wilderness areas worth visiting, from the lesser known Tugela Game Reserve, the Utrecht Balele Community Game Park and Isibindi Eco Reserve to the Nambiti Conservancy, a Big 5 reserve with a number of lodges offering luxury accommodation and game viewing experiences. Adventure junkies will enjoy white-water rafting down the mighty Thukela, some serious mountain biking, and 4x4 trails.

DID YOU KNOW? The bronze sculpture, created by Gert Swart, in honour of the fallen Zulu warriors at Isandlwana is in the shape of an ‘isiqu’. The ‘isiqu’ is a ‘necklace of valour’ that brave deserving Zulu warriors were permitted to wear – the stylised sculpture differs slightly from traditional ones in that it includes ornate beads and lions claws that were reserved for royalty and high ranking officials.

Amajuba Amajuba is one of the 11 districts of KwaZulu-Natal province. The seat of Amajuba is Newcastle. The majority of its 468,040 people speak Zulu (2001 Census). The district code is DC25. The Amajuba District is marketed as a battlefields tourism destination. Amajuba is an isiZulu name meaning “a place of doves”. The impis of King Shaka named the area Amajuba in 1825. It is associated with peace and it is a world-renowned name. The area is also the site of a battle in which the Boers defeated the British in 1881. Umzinyathi Umzinyathi is a historically rich region, renowned for its natural beauty. The district is situated in northwest Kwazulu-Natal, bordered by the Midlands in the west, the Drakensberg in the north, and Zululand to the east. The Umzinyathi region bears memories of the wars that swept across South Africa between 1879 and 1902, but its history starts long before this. The legendary King Shaka and the Zulu nation created upheaval among local tribes, the Voortrekkers crossed the mountains to settle on the land, while the British colonists had settled at what was known as ‘Port Natal’, now Durban. What followed was an era of war, as the Zulus, Voortrekkers and British clashed in some of the bloodiest battles in the history of South Africa, shaping the towns and villages of this region. WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

NORTH COAST KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast is an unspoilt natural environment with a lush sub-tropical coastline and warm waters of the Indian Ocean, stretching from Zimbali to the mighty Thukela River. Its rocky coastline invites exploration and the rolling hills of sugar cane are the perfect foil for a mountain bike excursion. Its friendly residents and diverse culture, fabulous cuisine and first class facilities make it easy to fall in love with this enchanting destination. The balmy winter temperatures, which seem to defy winter’s grip, make the town of Ballito the perfect host for the Ballito Pro surfing championship, the World’s longest continuously running professional surfing event, which this year celebrates its Golden Jubilee – it began in 1969 as the Durban 500 (and in 1971 was renamed Gunston 500). The Ballito Pro and Ballito Women’s Pro, both sponsored by Billabong, feature some of the world’s best surfers and runs from 22 June to 1 July on Willard Beach. Alongside the surfing, visitors will be spoiled for choice with non-stop activities providing even more entertainment throughout the Ballito festival site. There will be something for everyone with extreme sports events, a retail area, live stage entertainment and beach soccer. South Africa’s hottest musical acts appealing to all tastes – rock, pop, hip hop, kwaito, electro and dance – will be performing live on Salt Rock Beach over the last weekend. Beach and extreme sports, culinary contests as well as quality retail and food stalls will captivate visitors to this coastal holiday highlight. World surfing champion Shaun Tomson (1977) will be attending the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the event he won

an unprecedented six consecutive times from 1973 to 1978. Beyond the actual Beach Festival, there are many other beaches that provide good bathing and fishing spots, and there are beautiful reefs off-shore which will give divers hours of enjoyment. Explore the rocky shores and tidal pools to discover underwater life that is often only seen by those donning wetsuits and scuba gear. Adventure activities abound within a few minutes of the seafront, along with crocodile and animal farms for the curious-minded. Tee off for a round of golf at one of the scenic golf courses this region has to offer, often with a backdrop of beautiful bays, green sugar cane and indigenous forests. This is the place to indulge your senses… see a bottlenose dolphin for the first time, taste the spicy foodstuffs of the large Indian community that has made this region home, touch the fine detail of hand crafted art, smell the subtle fragrance of lemon grass as you relax at a spa and hear the sounds of sea gulls as you stroll along the beach.

DID YOU KNOW? It’s World Oceans Day on June 8 and has been celebrated unofficially since its original proposal in 1992 at the UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Spend some time looking out dolphins frolicking in the ocean or whales as they migrate to warmer waters to breed – show your appreciation of our oceans by being mindful of the destruction plastic is causing in the ocean.
