SANIBONANI and Welcome to the Exceptional Zulu Kingdom

The 2018 festive season is finally here and we are thrilled to welcome the thousands of holidaymakers that will be heading to KZN for their well-deserved summer holiday with friends and family. The festive season for us is always a highlight of all the work that we have done throughout the year in promoting the province as the must visit destination. Our visitors will fill our accommodation establishments and I would like to urge everyone to only use registered and graded accommodation. That way, you will be assured of quality accommodation. We have numerous world-class accommodation and some of our hotels and resorts have just been rewarded with national honours in the country’s annual Lilizela Tourism Awards. This year, we are also expecting a lot more international visitors from the United Kingdom with the recently launched direct route from London’s Heathrow airport - as well as from our other key markets such as Germany, France and the United States of America – to Durban’s King Shaka International Airport. We also conducted a number of marketing initiatives in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, in countries like Botswana, Namibia and Mozambique and we are confident that we will see a number of holidaymakers from those countries as well. Despite the tough economic times we are facing as a country, we are confident that we will have a good festive season. This will be bolstered by the current favourable exchange rate which will definitely make us a value-for-money destination for international tourists. I am confident that the people of KZN will make all our visitors feel at home. After all, we are famous for being a welcoming province!

We encourage those travelling by road to explore the province’s tourism routes along the way and enjoy some of our local sights and make a day of it. We also encourage you to also use this season to take day trips and visit some of our famous landmarks such as the Mandela Capture Site in Howick and our World Heritage sites St. Lucia and the Drakensberg mountains, among the many attractions we have on offer. Our beaches are our most popular attractions this season and they cost nothing to visit. They are situated along 600km of coastline and you, our valued visitor are truly spoilt for choice between the city of Durban and the balmy north and south coast beaches. We currently have nine internationally-recognised Blue Flag beaches, seven of them in the South Coast and two in Durban. A Blue Flag beach is a symbol of quality and an assurance to visitors that a venue meets a standard of excellence in safety, amenities, cleanliness, environmental information and managements. Our aim in the coming year is to increase the number of our beaches enjoying this status. To navigate in the province with ease, do download our KZN Travel Guide App to assist you with directions, accommodation establishments, restaurants and major events that we will be hosting across the province. I trust that you will have a fun filled and memorable holiday with us. Stay in touch with us on all our social media platforms and share your memorable moments with us in the Zulu Kingdom I wish you and your loved ones a great Festive Season and a prosperous New Year.

An Elephant In My Kitchen by Francoise Malby Anthony

A blonde, chic Parisienne, Françoise never expected to find herself living on a South African game reserve. But when she fell in love with renowned conservationist Lawrence Anthony her life took an unexpected turn. Lawrence died in 2012 and Françoise was left to face the tough reality of running Thula Thula without him, even though she knew very little about conservation. She was short on money, poachers were threatening their rhinos, and one of their elephants was charging Land Rovers on game drives and terrifying guests. There was no time to mourn when Thula Thula’s human and animal family were depending on her. How Françoise survived and Thula Thula thrived is beautifully described in this charming, funny and poignant book. Their elephant herd, rescued by Lawrence, shared Françoise’s grief at his passing but over time forged a new relationship with her. One day a baby, Tom, became separated from the herd and found his way into Françoise’s kitchen. Another day there was a desperate race against time to save a baby who had a snare wrapped around his face and couldn’t open his mouth to suckle.

This bestselling book is available in all bookstores in SA. For other countries availability, please check the website: www.AnElephantInMyKitchen.com IF YOU LOVED LAWRENCE’S THE ELEPHANT WHISPERER, OR JUST WANT TO SPEND TIME WITH SOME VERY SPECIAL ANIMALS, THEN YOU WON’T WANT TO MISS THIS SPARKLING BOOK. NO DOUBT, THE BEST WAY TO VIEW WHALES AND DOLPHINS UP CLOSE IS FROM A BOAT THE ISLE OF CAPRI CRUISES offers an exhilarating 2 hour cruise into the ocean on their boat “Bafana”, to view one of the world’s most magnificent mammals, the Humpback Whale! The trip takes you into the Indian Ocean and close to the Mozambican current to encounter them at close range. All trips have friendly and fully qualified whale tour guides on board, to share their vast knowledge of the ocean and its creatures with you. Every year, from June to November, whales can frequently be seen off the KwaZulu-Natal coast on their migratory route, from the Southern Oceans to the warmer tropical waters for mating and giving birth, and on their return, heading for the nutrient rich waters of Antarctica. By law, you are not allowed to approach within 300m from a whale, unless you are aboard a boat permitted by the Department of Marine and Coastal Management. Permit holders are all members of the South African Boat-Based Whale Watching Association and as such are required to adhere to a strict code of conduct and to undergo training. The Isle of Capri Cruises boasts one of two whale watching permits awarded in Durban.

We also offer: • Hourly Harbour Cruises from 10am - 4pm (conditions apply) • Sea Cruises at 12.30pm and 2.30pm • Educational School Trips • Boat Rides • Party Cruises • Fishing

Enjoy this special natural paradise, take advantage of the warm Indian Ocean that’s perfect for water sports, enjoy the world-class shopping, fine dining restaurants, unique arts and culture and enjoy the magnificent beach promenade and be charmed

by the warmth and sunshine smiles. Add to this the fact that Durban is a shopper’s paradise with several upmarket shopping centres offering brand name shops as well as quirky boutiques. Or browse around the Shongweni Farmers Market Christmas Extravaganza (15-17 December) to get the local vibe, ferret out a handmade treasure and stock up on Christmas gifts. Pop into the Victoria Street Market, with its numerous stalls selling everything from brassware, woven baskets, wooden articles to meat, fish, fruit and vegetables. No visit to Durban is complete without trying a legendary ‘bunny chow’ and Shisanyama - the Bunny Chow is a very simple affair consisting of a hollowed-out quarter or half loaf of bread filled with any available curry including beef, mutton, chicken or beans, and is eaten with your fingers and the Shisanyama, which means braaing the meat is a popular experience in the local shebeens and township experience. Not forgetting to enjoy the line-up of the most exciting events from Umhlanga to Umlazi. Some of the highlights being: Gagazi FM Beach Festival, Inanda Dam Music Festival, Durban Jazz Festival, Fact Durban Rocks and so much more – check out the Diary pages for details.

DID YOU KNOW? The Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve is home to a unique mangrove ecosystem which is a haven for thousands of fiddler crabs, with their single large claw, as well as many bird species – look out for the Mangrove Kingfisher, Curlew and Water Dikkop and listen out for the Natal Nightjar which may sometimes be heard. You can also expect to encounter mudskippers - fish that use their pectoral fins to either skim over the water or to propel themselves across the mud. With its raised boardwalk and distinctive habitat, all nature lovers should pay this reserve a visit.

The Outer West area of the city of Durban extends from Kloof inland and includes the beautiful Valley of 1000 Hills, up the winding and picturesque Botha’s Hill. Botha’s Hill, midway between the beaches of Durban and the KwaZulu-Natal provincial capital Pietermaritzburg, enjoys the most commanding views on the coastal side of the Drakensberg. At about 800m above sea level, you can see the snow-capped peaks of the berg and the ships on the Indian Ocean. Overlooking the world-famous Valley of 1000 Hills with its living Zulu museum and many other cultural and natural attractions, Botha’s Hill is on the route of the Comrades Marathon and Dusi Canoe Race. Named after Carolina Botha who opened the first inn there in 1849 to cater to wagoners, Botha’s Hill has maintained this spirit of hospitality. Comfortable B&B guesthouses in Botha’s Hill also offer self-catering facilities, and there is a well-equipped backpackers’ lodge for the more adventurous. Shongweni Dam, Game Reserve and Polo Grounds are nearby, as are Inanda and Nagle Dams as well as Tala Game Reserve. A word of caution - if you want to stay in Botha’s Hill during the Comrades or Dusi races, book well ahead!

DID YOU KNOW? Rainbow- and Brown trout were introduced into South African waters by the British in the late nineteenth century. As they are a cold-water species, they can only survive in the cooler waters of the KZN Midlands and Drakensberg region – and both are a highly sought-after catch for fly-fishermen, with size being of much importance!

ZULULAND Feel the hot African sun, experience the vibrant Zulu culture, gaze upon the cobalt blue Indian Ocean and walk through indigenous forests. This is Zululand, fondly known as the ‘place of the people of heaven’ and the ‘heartland of the Zulu nation’. It is an area pulsates with the sounds of traditional villages, a place where you will enjoy the wide welcoming smiles extended to you by the local people, a place of unforgettable wildlife adventures and traditional Zulu culture and heartfelt hospitality. Start your Zululand adventure by following the Zululand Heritage Route, known as Route 66, for greater insight into the history of the region. Pop into the Butterfly and the Cave – now known as Discovery Park, in the grounds of Fort Nongqayi Museum Village in Eshowe. Not only will the kids have fun, but the adults can enjoy lunch and a coffee before all learning about everything natural history to wars between kingdoms to battles against the tsetse fly. Along this route one can experience Zulu culture and hospitality first hand at Shakaland or Simunye Zulu Village – be greeted with traditional dance, learn the culture and sip on Zulu beer… and then pop into a roadside market for fresh fruit and locally made curios. The Mtonjaneni Zulu Historical Museum has an exceptional display of artifacts from the Anglo Zulu War and from here a guided tour of King Dingane’s Spring can be undertaken. Mtonjaneni Lodge hosts its annual Christmas Market on the 1st December. But if you miss the market, don’t worry as there is a fabulous craft chop onsite. Delve further into Zulu history and culture as you travel along this

route through Ulundi and Nongoma towards the game reserve rich area of Pongola. Head back to the coast via the Hluhluwe-uMfolozi Game Reserve and then reward yourself with some time on the coast. Be sure to include the Richards Bay area for its pristine beaches - the popular swimming beaches are Alkanstrand and Newark Beach, sailing, kayaking and deep-sea fishing can be enjoyed aboard a private fishing charter – be sure to include a sunset harbour cruise to your itinerary followed by cocktails on the Tuzi Gazi Waterfront. Festivities in the uMhlathuze Beach Festival on the 16th December and see the New Year in with the Last Dance Music Festival on the 31st. Next pop to the pretty village of Mtunzini, home to the rare Palmnut vulture, the Raffia Palm Monument and the Umlalazi Nature Reserve. Activities include boating, canoeing and fishing on the lagoon, bird watching as well as walking through the pristine coastal forest and mangrove swamps. Great for some R&R before the busyness of 2019 sets in.

DID YOU KNOW? Mtonjaneni means ‘place of little fountain’ and refers to Dingaan’s Spring located in the Mtonjaneni heights. During Dingaan’s reign between 1828 and 1840 he had warriors stationed at the spring to protect it, and as part of the daily chores maidens from his village were ordered to fetch water for the King’s household. Dingaan would only drink from this spring as he was afraid of being poisoned by water from nearby rivers.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

BATTLEFIELDS With its picturesque landscapes of rolling plains, rocky hills and undulating valleys it’s hard to imagine the battles that were fought and the hardships endured. This region, with more recorded battlefields than anywhere else in Africa, is the place to discover another facet of the battles fought between Zulu, Brit and Boer. This is where Shaka, Winston Churchill, Mahatma Gandhi and General Louis Botha once walked, and where the death of the Prince Imperial of France saw the end of the last Napoleon. For those with specific interest in the battles that took place in the region, there are a number of significant battles to remember at this time of year. The Battle of Blood River which culminated on the 16th of December 1838, was a battle between the Zulus and the Boers - so named because the waters of the Ncome River flowed red with the blood of slain Zulus. The Battle of Isandlwana, the first major encounter in the Anglo-Zulu War between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom, which took place on the 22nd of January 1879 (this is being commemorated with a re-enactment at the battle site), and the Battle of Rorke’s Drift, which took place later that same day and into the evening. The world-famous 118-day Siege of Ladysmith by Boer forces (2 November 1899 to 28 February 1900), the Battle of Colenso which took place on the 15th of December 1899, the Battle of Spioenkop on the 24th of January 1900, as well as the Battle of the Thukela Heights (12 to 28 February 1900), which was, until WW2, the biggest battle fought by the British in Africa. The Spioenkop Battlefield has been described as one of the best-preserved battlefields in the world and boasts having three future world figures present during the battle - Louis Botha,

who became South Africa’s first Prime Minister and helped to draft the constitution of the League of Nations (later the United Nations), Winston Churchill and a young Indian stretcher bearer named Mohandas Gandhi – later the Mahatma. For those pressed for time, a visit to the Talana Museum in Dundee gives an overview of the battles of the region. And at this time of the year the museum grounds are open into the evening for visitors to enjoy the magnificent display of Christmas lights in the grounds – bring a picnic and enjoy an evening with a difference at the museum. The one-day hiking trail through the Vryheid Hill Nature Reserve not only gives you the opportunity of looking out for a number of endemic bird species, including the blue cane, ground woodpecker and olive bushshrike, but passes several gun points dating back to the Anglo-Boer War. Another town with nature literally on its doorstep is Utrecht. KZN’s ‘town within a game park’ is quite unique as it lies within the confines of the Balele Game Park. It is not unusual to see duiker or the occasional impala frequenting the gardens that line the streets.

For more info check out the website www.battlefields.kzn.org.za 34 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Dec-Jan 2019

DID YOU KNOW? The Ncome River (Blood River) has its source in the hills near Utrecht and is a tributary of the Buffalo River which flows into the uThukela River. The Ncome River Vlei is one of the biggest inland wetlands in South Africa and is a wintering place for a variety migratory water birds.

NORTH COAST Come and celebrate summer on Zulu Kingdom’s Dolphin Coast! This region is popular for its sunny beaches, warm waters and fun-filled holidays. This shoreline offers a perfect combination of golden beaches and sheltered coves for perfect beach fun… sun, surf, fishing, horseback beach rides or snorkelling – and is a playground for the bottlenose dolphins which can be seen frolicking in the waters close to shore all year round. Holiday time on the North Coast is all about the fun of being outdoors and enjoying the sunshine. And no holiday is complete without enjoying the warm waters of the Indian Ocean – from the exhilarating surf breaks to paddling in the shallows with the kids, exploring the rocky shores or relaxing on golden beaches. Ballito, the region’s largest town, has several excellent swimming beaches as well as a scenic boardwalk. Not only can you enjoy fabulous walks and great views, but the more energetic can hike all the way to Salt Rock, which is popular for its main swimming beach and tidal pool and offers great snorkelling and spearfishing, for even more spectacular views. This hike takes you through a tunnel which is best attempted at low tide. Popular swimming beaches are Willard Beach and Clarke Bay and the Ballito Tidal Pool remains a firm favourite for families with kids. All the way along this coastline are fabulous beaches, some quiet and peaceful with the tranquil sounds of nature and the crashing of the ocean, others lively with children’s play areas, water sports and sometimes entertainment. Suffice it to say, visitors to the region are spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches!

Beyond the beach, keen golfers will appreciate the sweeping fairways of Umhlali’s golf course at the Umhlali Country Club, the beautiful setting of Prince’s Grant and the internationally designed golf course at Zimbali. Adventurous activities abound within a few minutes of the seafront, along with crocodile and animal farms for the curious-minded. River quad biking trails, horse riding, coastal microlight trips, beach and offshore angling are just some of the memorable holiday encounters available. Still need to do some Christmas shopping? Check out the weekly Sugar Rush Saturday Market, the Litchi Orchard Farmers’ Market (8th December), the Ballito Christmas Market (16-23 December) in the country village of Umhlali and the Blythedale Coastal Christmas Market (19-23 December) – you’ll find beautifully handcrafted gifts, art and crafts, as well as delicious food and entertainment at them all. Alternatively, shop till you drop at one of the upmarket Ballito shopping malls. Holiday festivities include the Dolphin Coast Summer Festival (20-21 December) and the Litchi Festival (14 December to 2 January), as well as its popular Ballito New Year’s Eve Party.

DID YOU KNOW? Coral and zoanthids will glow under UV light! Under torch and UV light the incredible world of both coral and critter come alive - look out for octopus, colourful sea slugs, crabs’ moray ells and much more on a walk along the rocky shores of Ballito Shaka’s Rock at night. For safety it is recommended that this walk either be done in a group, or as a guided tour with Tidal Tao – the benefit of a guide is the knowledge and expert eyes.

UKHAHLAMBA

DRAKENSBERG

courtesy Cathkin Booking and Management Services,

Summer is a glorious time in the KwaZulu-Natal Drakensberg with the mountains resplendent in their shades of green. This mountain range named ‘Ukhahlamba’ by the Zulu people and ‘The Dragon Mountain’ by the Dutch Voortrekkers, forms an enormous barrier separating KwaZulu-Natal from the Kingdom of Lesotho. It is a treasure trove of biological diversity and with its massive cliffs towering over riverine bush, lush yellowwood forests and cascading waterfalls. It well deserves its international status as a World Heritage Site. Enjoy one of the many hiking routes on both lower and upper slopes - there are a large number of marked trails, from short ambles through indigenous fern forests to more strenuous full day hikes traversing rivers and hillsides to fullon adventuring. Be aware that thunderstorms are common during the summer months and although accidents are rare, be sure to complete the Mountain Rescue Register prior to setting off, even for a day walk. Part of each entry fee goes towards the invaluable emergency search and rescue service provided by volunteers of the Mountain Club of South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal Section. For flower lovers, the Sani Pass Wild Flower Walk taking place in January is ideal, but be sure to have your passport handy for entrance into Lesotho. There are a number of permanent, mapped trails for mountain biking enthusiasts to enjoy, and paddlers will appreciate the recent rains and the faster flowing rivers – the Drak Challenge 2018 in Underberg (in January) is a popular event. Serious athletes can enter the technically challenging FAST Drak Challenge, a 65km event on the Umzimkhulu River in Underberg. The Central and Northern Drakensberg region has much to offer visitors, with each of its valleys having unique and beautiful attributes - from

the famous Amphitheatre, featuring the world’s second highest waterfall in the north, to Giant’s Castle famous for the Bushman rock art depicted in Main Cave to the south. Sandwiched between these two, Cathedral Peak has spectacular scenery and the Cathkin/Champagne Valley, which has an abundance of accommodation options, offers variety of adventurous activities. Adventures range from adrenalin pumping ‘escapades’ such as whitewater rafting, mountain biking and canoeing, to hiking, horse riding and golf or just ‘chilling’ at the winery. Music lovers will enjoy ‘Christmas in the Berg’ which takes place annually on the campus of the Drakensberg Boys Choir School in the Champagne Castle area over a weekend in December. There is also a wonderful Christmas market with plenty local crafts and goodies for sale. The four-day Smoking Dragon’s New Year Festival, with its variety of acts over different stages is sure to be a hit. The Central Drakensberg Information & Booking Centre, reputed to be one of the best nationally, remains the main information ‘dispenser’ ensuring that visitors to the region are equipped with all the necessary knowledge to ensure theirs is an unforgettable holiday.

DID YOU KNOW? The Sani Pass mountain road was once a rough mule trail descending the Eastern Highlands of Basutoland into Natal. This steep zigzagging horse trail was the primary trade route between Mokhotlong and South Africa – so treacherous was the route that it could be identified from afar by the vultures and Lammergeiers that circled waiting for ailing mules that were pushed over the edge.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

ELEPHANT COAST Stretching from Lake St Lucia in the south to Kosi Bay in the north and extending inland across to the Lubombo Mountains in the west, KwaZulu-Natal’s Elephant Coast is an exceptional area, fast growing in popularity. This region, with its incredible variety of habitats and eco-systems, delivers an unforgettable blend of adventure, unspoilt scenery and unique experiences The iSimangaliso Wetland Park, with its 332 000ha of marine and terrestrial interlinking eco-systems, is of huge importance, and was declared South Africa’s first World Heritage Site in 1999. This veritable playground of beach, bush, ocean and forests offers a bit of magic for all who head east this summer holiday. It goes without saying that the Park’s 220km of golden beaches lapped by the warm Indian Ocean are a universal drawcard. A highlight on any of these beaches at this time of year is seeing a Loggerhead or Leatherback turtle come ashore to lay her eggs. Witness the extreme effort and determination as they haul their bulk across the shore to lay their eggs in carefully prepared nests, often on the exact beach that they themselves hatched from. During the summer months, generally from November to end February, a few selected lodges in the Maputaland Marine Reserve offer guests the privilege of a turtle tracking experience in the company a resident turtle expert to help monitor the turtles’ behaviour and nesting numbers. Or book a walk with a licensed community guide – contact details are on the iSimangaliso website. Other activities include game viewing, birding, paddling, snorkelling, hiking and diving. Offshore, iSimangaliso offers one of the richest warm water coral reef systems at Sodwana Bay. You need

not even be a scuba diver to enjoy the variety as shallow, safe snorkelling trips are also available, even for beginners. Popular for all ages are the boat cruises on the Lake St Lucia Estuary to see resident hippos and crocodiles and the boat-based marine tours which offer the opportunity to see dolphins and a variety of pelagic birds. iSimangaliso boasts excellent game and bird viewing on the Eastern and Western Shores as well as uMkhuze section, which hosts the ‘Big Five’, cheetah, wild dog and hyena along with numerous other terrestrial animals. Bird watching is at its best during the summer months as many migrant species escaping the winter of the northern hemisphere can be seen in this region – up to 420 bird species have been identified in the uMkhuze region. To enhance your birding experience, be sure to ask for a local, Birdlife South Africa accredited guide. Birding is also excellent in Kosi Bay, the Park’s northernmost destination – a special of the region is the Palmnut vulture which feeds on the fruit of the Kosi Palms. Other species to look out for along the estuarine lake system are curluw sandpiper, bar-tailed godwit and if you’re lucky a Mongolian plover. This is a spectacular region with sheltered beaches, the traditional fish kraals, a natural ‘aquarium’ ideal for snorkelling, as well as fishing and boat cruises.

DID YOU KNOW? Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife’s Sea-turtle project, which has been running since 1963, is now the longest running Leatherback and Loggerhead turtle monitoring project in the world. Permits for beach driving are valid from 15 October to 15 March for turtle research, which includes the GPS positioning of nests, the counting of eggs where possible, and the tagging of turtles.
