NELSON MANDELA MUSEUM - QUNU MTHATHA - BHUNGA

QUOTE: “I learned that courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear” The Nelson Mandela Museum officially opened on 11 February 2000, to coincide with the tenth anniversary of his release from prison in 1990. Nelson Mandela insisted that the museum was not to be a static collection and tribute to him, but a living memorial to his values and vision. It was to inspire and enrich all who visit it and serve as a catalyst for development and share the heritage resources linked to him. The Nelson Mandela Museum is more than a place; it is an experience that allows visitors to follow the footprints of the man affectionately known as ‘Madiba’, who’s long walk to freedom began in the foothills that rise from the banks of the Mbashe River in Mvezo. We offer a variety of tour options that include Bhunga Building in the town of Mthatha, which is set to re-open on 11 Feb 2016.

Truly a little piece of heaven.

We also have a fully licenced Pub and Restaurant as well as Conference facilities.

Visitors will once again be able to view Nelson Mandela’s gifts that he received from around the world. From the site of the museum in Qunu, visitors are able to follow in Madibas footprints around Qunu Village; from the school where he was named Nelson on his first day of attendance, to the family cemetary where his mother and father are buried and his original home etc. The new grave site where Nelson Mandela is buried is not yet open to the public, however visitors are allowed to view it from a distance. Tours to other sites of historical significance such as Mvezo and Mqhekezweni are arranged. Our tours are customised to suite visitor needs.

Open Daily: Mon - Sun from 9am - 4pm except Workers Day. We accept after-hour bookings if made in advance.

No entrance fee - donations encouraged.
