WESTVILLE & COWIES HILL

Westville was a farming area up until the early 1920’s and the charm and natural beauty of this rural area remains to this day. In 1848 Jonas Bergtheil chartered a ship and brought out a group of German farmers and their families who settled approximately 12km inland from Durban. The area was named Westville in honour of Martin West, the first Lieutenant Governor of Natal. The first schools and stores were established in 1877 and were situated near the intersection of Jan Hofmeyr and New Germany Roads. The lush, leafy suburbs of modern day Westville with it’s elegant homes set in picturesque gardens, combined with an ideal climate, makes it a much sought after residential area. Its proximity to Durban and Pinetown as well as excellent schools, business and shopping complexes and sports facilities, make Westville an ideal place to live.

MUSEUMS BERGTHEIL MUSEUM BUILDING is of great historical interest and was declared a National Monument in 1984. Besides housing household items, documents and photographs relating to the growth and development of Westville, the Museum hosts a number of fascinating temporary exhibitions throughout the year. Entry to the Museum is free and school and group talks are given by arrangement with the Museum Officer. The latest section of the Museum open to the public is a room dedicated to the Indian community of the area. Entitled ‘Eastern Promises’, it focuses on the marriage customs of both Muslim and Hindu residents. For more than 140 years the Indian community has featured in the growth and development of Westville, and this colourful display serves to underline the important role played by this sector of our society. There is a new exhibition room entitled “Who left this behind?” which relates to the history of Palmiet. Bergtheil Museum - Tel: 031-266 2954/5871 16 Queens Avenue Westville

HEALTH & BEAUTY WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE? Acupuncture is a holistic approach to health based on the concepts of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which involves the insertion of very fine needles at specific points on the body. This stimulates the body’s natural healing processes to work optimally. Acupuncture can be used in the treatment of acute or chronic conditions and can also be used as a preventative measure by improving the overall functioning of the body’s immune and organ systems.

When a couple decides to divorce, they consult separate attorneys hoping to get the best settlement deal. However, soon the legal bills and emotional distress become overwhelming. Divorce by mediation identifies issues relating to the division of assets, maintenance, and future parenting It assists in removing the painful win-lose atmosphere in adversarial divorces. Mediation involves negotiating a mutually beneficial and reasonable solution where neither partner wins at the other’s expense. Both must accept decisions derived from the negotiations. The process is less timeous and costly than acrimonious divorces to pass through the legal system. It minimizes emotional trauma, while creating a co-operative atmosphere to co-parent healthy well-adjusted children into the future once the spousal relationship has ended. Many forms of divorce negotiations lose sight of the children’s best interests. Mediation does not take the place of the attorney, but provides the couple with the opportunity to consult one attorney who will review and incorporate their mutual agreements into the formal legal divorce agreement. To learn more about divorce by mediation, please contact: CHARMAINE DE WAARD on 031 266 0985 Cell: 083 655 2129

This established landmark was beautifully revamped in 2013 which breathed new life into the building. Expansive glass shop fronts allow plenty of natural light into the building whilst deep timber pergolas shade the centre for a comfortable shopping experience. PALMIET NATURE RESERVE THE PALMIET NATURE RESERVE was opened to the public in September 1972. The reserve is managed by eThekwini Municipality’s Natural Resources Division. In 2006 it was proclaimed as a protected area under the KZN Nature Conservation Management Act. The reserve covers an area of 80 hectares in the Palmiet River valley. Open to the public 7 days a week there are numerous trails for visitors to enjoy. Entrance is free and visitors can access the reserve from either Old New Germany Road or David McLean Drive. There is a wheelchair trail, built by the Lions Club, that leads to the edge of the river and a shaded area. The reserve caters for people who enjoy bird watching, walking or indigenous flora in a safe and secure environment. Field Rangers are on duty 7 days a week and arrangements can be made for a Field Ranger to accompany visitors. Due to regular flooding there are no bridges across the Palmiet River and visitors must exercise caution when crossing. Trails can be walked in 30 minutes to 3 hours. 24

The demand for animal welfare services is growing year on year and the KLOOF AND HIGHWAY SPCA is no exception. With vast rural areas surrounding the Highway area our Society has a tremendous task to reach out to thousands of animals who have no access to veterinary services. The growing animal population and current economic crisis, places a huge amount of pressure on many animal owners, impacting on the welfare of animals within our communities. The Kloof & Highway SPCA, treats and cares for thousands of animals each year, investigates animal cruelty and neglect; promotes responsible pet ownership through its’ adoption process; holds regular sterilisation clinics in poverty stricken and rural areas and conducts education on the humane treatment of animals to promote compassion and respect for all living creatures. We do this for those animals who are most vulnerable in our society and for those who have no voice to speak for themselves. The staff

and volunteers of the Kloof and Highway SPCA would not be able to continue with this work without continued support from the community, local businesses and schools. We rely on your donations, support and generosity to provide basic animal health care which is so desperately needed by thousands of animals each year. Please show your support and make a commitment by making regular donations. We extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to every person who has contributed in any way….no matter how small….it makes a difference. WENDON ACADEMY is proudly a school that provides education to children who require Special Needs. As placements become very difficult in the Mainstream Schooling, each learner is then underrecognised resulting in a situation that undermines their progress and their full potential. These children then remain disadvantaged and socially handicapped. This hidden handicap remains constant throughout their lives. Our aim is to create a safe environment in which each child is academically extended and stimulated through a wide diversity of teachings in all areas of their school day. We have witnessed our young people arrive at Wendon emotionally beaten through feelings of inadequacy. Through Individual Development Plans, without restricting the progress of other learners in the class, encourages the power of learning, not by enforcing but by enabling. We believe that we can assist our children to look at the world in a different way and that by turning their schooling into a magical environment of self confidence and personal belief, each child becomes the best they can be. DURBAN CHRISTIAN CENTRE SCHOOL was established in 1999 by Dr. Fred and Nellie Roberts. It is not just a school with a Christian ethos, but rather one that has it’s foundations on the Word of God, and it is this that makes us unique. Every learner who enters the school, is taught that they can do all things through Christ who strengthens them, and nothing is impossible with God. Although we’re a private school, we do follow the National curriculum, and every teacher is carefully selected, and comes highly qualified. We know that because of this, we are raising a Godly generation through Spirit-filled academic excellence. We are one of the few Christian Schools that offer an integrated syllabus with the Department of Education and the Bible. We aim to establish good work habits in small classes, and our whole ethos is based on a positive, confidence-building approach. The children are rewarded for effort, achievement and good behaviour. While academics is important, we need to ensure a holistic approach is maintained within the school. We therefore offer a broad co-curricular programme consisting of sports, drama, music,

art and adventurous activities, in which the school recognises the equal importance of learning beyond the classroom. All our activities are coached and taught by professionals in their field, thereby ensuring that our standards are high, and maintain a spirit of excellence. We want every child who attends DCCS to feel special and loved, as we believe that each one of them is destined for greatness. Because of the positive reinforcement that they are given on a daily basis, they are able to declare, “I am blessed, and anointed, and filled with the power of God”. DCCS is at 39 Galway Rd, Mayville. Call 031-242 5005 for more information.

WHAT IS KUMON? The Kumon Method of learning was developed over 50 years ago in Japan by Toru Kumon, a high school Maths teacher whose son was struggling with Grade 2 Maths. Mr Kumon was convinced that he could help his son improve his Maths by introducing him to the skills one step at a time. With that in mind, Toru Kumon created a series of worksheets for his son to do after school and by Grade 6 his son was able to solve integral and differential calculus problems. He achieved this by spending only 30 minutes a day completing his father’s worksheets. Kumon is not designed to improve Maths and English skills as an end in itself; it is an educational method which uses Maths and English skills to develop the potential of each child. The aim of Kumon is to unleash each child’s potential to love learning, by improving confidence and self-esteem, and encouraging self-discipline and a good daily study habit. There is no failing in Kumon, because each child works at his or her own carefully monitored level. Toru Kumon: “Every Child An Achiever” • Confidence & Self-Esteem • Concentration • Self-Study Skills In the Kumon Programme, each worksheet is slightly more difficult than the one before it. This format encourages students to solve problems for themselves. Independence and self-discipline are encouraged by the instructors.

This eventually leads to a love of learning and encourages independent learning. Kumon’s Mission: By discovering the potential of each individual and developing his/her ability to the maximum, we aim to foster sound, capable people and thereby contribute to the global community.

The Kumon Programme allows each child to practice to become competent in the fundamental areas of Maths and English. It also instills other important qualities and long-term skills in children including: • Mental agility • Good study habits • Confidence • Commitment and self discipline • Reduction in anxiety • Practice
