THE HISTORY OF ST MARY’S PRIVATE CATHOLIC MISSION HOSPITAL St. Mary’s Hospital was built in 1927 but was initially established by a group of Trappist monks in 1882. Several of the monks were healers and it soon became clear that medical care was needed in the community. The monks appealed to women in their home parishes for assistance and five women responded. These 5 women formed the foundation of the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood which is the order of nuns that still owns the Hospital today. During the Spanish Influenza epidemic of 1918, it became apparent that the three mud huts that were used as a hospital were woefully inadequate and fundraising plans were implemented to build a modern hospital. As word of the hospital spread and the numbers of patients increased and so
grew the need for skilled nursing staff. From this need for skilled nursing staff the St Mary’s Nursing School opened its doors in 1933. Today the Hospital is owned by an inter-vivos Trust – St Mary’s Catholic Mission Hospital Trust. The Hospital is a registered Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) 043-932 and Section 18A exempt organisation. POOL AND GARDEN CENTRE moved into Sandy Centre in 1990 and have served the Highway area and even further afield ever since. Under the same owners and management team since 1st April 1992 (now in our 24th year) Pool and Garden Centre started out tucked away in the corner of Sandy Centre on the ground floor accommodating both our retail and wholesale divisions. In 1998 with major alterations to the centre we were moved to a smaller shop below the stairs (where the bottle store now stands) and we moved our wholesale division across the road to Cowie`s Park. In October 2013 with the latest renovations to the centre we were once again moved. To our current location on the upper level (above the Spar). For clients who need to load goods there is a loading zone on the upper level accessible next to the Spur and Locksmiths. RECREATION NEW GERMANY NATURE RESERVE Set high in the scenic hills and valleys of New Germany and bordering on both Westville and Pinetown lies this well preserved wilderness mosaic of forests, bushclumps and grasslands. The reserve is well known among nature lovers for its masses of wild flowers during spring, its high bird population and a wonderfully diverse tree composition. The 110ha reserve was officially opened to the public in August 1986 and is managed on the basis of intensive research. A Ranger and a number of guards live in the Reserve and the area is patrolled regularly to prevent poaching.

It forms a vital link in the chain of naturally managed areas along the stretch of the Umbilo River from Pinetown to Durban Bay. The valley boasts one of the national monuments to be found in Pinetown, namely The Umbilo Waterworks; these were destroyed in the floods of 1905.
LET’S WALK! Two major self-guided trails may be walked in the reserve. They have been carefully set out with both young and old in mind. Following the contour lines which means no climbing is involved. For school parties and those who prefer to walk with a guide, walks may be arranged by calling the numbers provided.
There are a number of walking trails to be followed that are graded according to their steepness.
IMBALI TRAIL Imbali in Zulu means “flower”. This trail has earned its name because of the masses of spring wild flowers.
DORMOUSE TRAIL which is an extremely steep trail which leads above the Umbilo Falls.
AVIARY A leisurely walk through the aviary which houses at least 60 species of indigenous birds is one of the main attractions of the Reserve.

The WATERFALL TRAIL which is an easy walking trail and follows the Umbilo River with a viewing balcony overlooking the Umbilo Falls. DUIKER TRAIL is also easy. BUSHBUCK TRAIL is a mildsteep walk.
Dassies abound in the many rocky areas and you may get a glimpse of a bushbuck or Blue Duiker. The Interpretive Centre and large pit braai area are available for hire and must be booked in advance but those wanting to have a picnic are free to use the amenities.
The demand for animal welfare services is growing year on year and the KLOOF AND HIGHWAY SPCA is no exception. With vast rural areas surrounding the Highway area our Society has a tremendous task to reach out to thousands of animals who have no access to veterinary services. The growing animal population and current economic crisis, places a huge amount of pressure on many animal owners, impacting on the welfare of animals within our communities. THE KLOOF & HIGHWAY SPCA, treats and cares for thousands of animals each year, investigates animal cruelty and neglect; promotes responsible pet ownership through its’ adoption process; holds regular sterilisation clinics in poverty stricken and rural areas and conducts education on the humane treatment of animals to promote compassion and respect for all living creatures. We do this for those animals who are most
vulnerable in our society and for those who have no voice to speak for themselves. The staff and volunteers of the Kloof and Highway SPCA would not be able to continue with this work without continued support from the community, local businesses and schools. QUEENSBURGH In 1924 four residential townships in the area, Malvern, Escombe, Northdene and Mosely, combined to form the town of Malvern. During the year of Queen Elizabeth’s coronation, Malvern received municipality status and changed its name to Queensburgh. Another area of Queensburgh is Northdene with its delightful North Park Nature Reserve. This is a small yet beautiful protected area of coastal lowland forest right next to the Umhlatuzana River. Delightful paths have been carefully laid and one can wander past established ponds that are a haven for water birds, and spot the odd bushbuck, grey duiker or mongoose. 26

It has been in exitence since 27/11/1963. The M.C.H. is a haven for 120 childern between the ages of 3 and 18 of diffrent cultures, creed and language. Malvern Children’s Home falls under the auspices of the Christian Social Services [KwaZulu-Natal]. The C.S.S. is registered with the department of social development as a N.P.O.with its own registration number; and also with the SARS in terms of section 18A of the tax act. The M.C.H.has its own constitution and management structure. The M.C.H. prides itself in good management and has a proven record of sound financial accountability.

St Benedict School is an independent, Catholic School situated in Pinetown. The school accepts learners from Grade RR (age 4), right through to Grade 12 where the learners write the IEB examinations. The school currently has about 450 learners and provides small classes, a loving, caring environment and an all-round education. St Benedict School lives up to its patron’s ideal that everyone is special in the eyes of God and deserves to be respected, loved and cared for. St Benedict School was opened in 1956 by the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood, based at Mariannhill. The school started in an old woodand-iron house and began with just 32 pupils. From these humble beginnings, the school has grown to become a flourishing educational institution. With the dramatic growth of the school over the years the Board of Governors established an additional High School wing in 2008 in order to accommodate the increased numbers of learners seeking enrolment at the school. A swimming pool was also built in 2009 to consolidate the sporting facilities at the school. The Grade R facility was re-introduced at the school in 2011 and 2015 has seen the opening of two Grade RR classes. The school provides a quality Independent School education and challenges its learners to become the future Christian leaders of South Africa, able to think and reason independently and to work together in our rainbow nation.
