The Hillcrest Story The town began as a small holiday village in 1895 on the farm ‘Albinia’, owned by William Gillitt. The shape and size of ’Albinia’ shows it started as a Voortrekker farm. There is reason to believe that this farm may have been called Buffelsfontein or ‘Buffalo Spring’, inspired by the wetland in the present Springside Nature Reserve. It also tells us about the wildlife present in 1835. The main wagon road to Pietermaritzburg and the interior passed over the farm. When minerals were discovered, the wagon traffic increased. The Natal Government railway line was built through the area by 1879 and D.D. Fregona opened a store, near present Oxford Village, in the 1890s. Ernest Acutt leased a portion of Gillitt’s farm Albinia to start the village. The name Hill Crest (originally two words) was suggested by Senator Frank Churchill in the 20th century. And just recently land was purchased on which it will be building DCC Hillcrest church. The land is in Kassier road, just off the corner of Old Main Road.

Durban Christian Centre, which was established in Durban 35 years ago By Dr Fred Roberts, already has campuses in Phoenix, Chatsworth, Lamontville, Berea Rd, Wentworth and the Bluff besides the flagship Jesus Dome, situated in Mayville.

Pastor John Torrens, senior pastor at the DCC Jesus Dome in Durban, said that the development of the new church was in line with the vision to reach as many people as possible with the gospel and to care for the community. Hillcrest/Kloof at a Glance 5

Hillcrest Development Hillcrest has changed, in the last few years, from a small village, into a “Village with a Vibe”. All major retailers have come up the hill, and made Hillcrest a trendy place to be, where you don’t have to leave the village for your shopping ideas, but yet still enjoy the “farming, out of town” feel, with an extremely pleasant and cool climate. The recent developments of Townhouse living, and expansions, offer the buyer a great social environment, and most importantly, great value for money when compared to areas such as Durban North and Umhlanga, yet are still being considered a prime residential area. The development of Cotswold Downs Golfing Estate which wears the crown as being listed one of South Africa’s newest and amongst the best courses designed. Magnificient homes and established grounds have shown Cotswold Downs starting to reach adulthood and certainly living up to it’s name as one of the best SA golf courses. Development is still ongoing and only a few plots of land left to purchase. This new development is becoming a landmark in Hillcrest. The development of 101 on Acutt has lifted off and new homeowners have moved in! Ongoing development in this near complete estate boasts very modern, upmarket living with a complement of palatial double story units and single storey units of grand proportions. The development of Clifton Hill Estate has seen the completion of secure living combined with healthy family lifetstyle in an environment that is proudly indigenous and has its own lifestyle centre, café and internet corner, and children’s crèche.

Most exciting too, is the completion of the most welcomed Hillcrest Private Hospital. The hospital is immaculately finished and gives one a feeling of entering a hotel as you walk through the front door! Every medical profession and field is covered by the Doctors and Specialists now in attendance and there is another wing presently under construction to develop Hillcrest’s very own Oncology Centre. Upmarket Equestrian Estates, namely Stoneford Equestrian Estate and Kirtlington Estate fulfil the urban farm lifestyle. Upmarket is putting it mildly…..unbelievable homes and surrounds!! The upgrading of Inanda Road which accommodates the necessary increase in volumes is now complete and opens up an ease of traffic to our fast developing Waterfall area. This has just enjoyed a major facelift and seen the fabulous new Watercrest Shopping Centre develop into a hub of activity and enjoyment to an ever fast growing community.

HEALTHY HAIR TIPS Wash oily hair more frequently. How often you wash your hair should be based on how much oil your scalp produces. If your scalp is oily, you may need to wash it as often as once a day. If you have chemically treated hair, your hair may be drier, so you may want to wash it less frequently. As you get older, your scalp makes less oil, so you may not need to shampoo as often. But if you see flakes in your hair, you may not be shampooing enough. This can lead to dandruff and other scalp diseases. HEALTHY TEETH TIPS

Go on a white-teeth diet If you’re quaffing red wine and black tea, or smoking cigarettes or cigars, expect the results to show up as not-so-pearly whites. Other culprits to blame for dingy teeth include colas, gravies, and dark juices. Bottom line: If it’s dark before you put it in your mouth, it will probably stain your teeth. Brush immediately after eating or drinking foods that stain teeth and use a good bleaching agent, either over-the-counter or in the dentist’s office. For convenient teeth-cleaning action, eat an apple. Chuck your toothbrush... ...or change the head of your electric toothbrush at least every two to three months. Otherwise, you’re just transferring bacteria to your mouth.

The number of orphans continues to escalate as AIDs continues to spread through South African communities. It is a Government registered children’s home, the children are admitted from various child welfare organisations with a court order from the Children’s Court. It is a non-profit institution of a public and permanent nature. 23 self-contained three-bedroomed cottages with fitted kitchens, bathrooms and lounges have been built on the property. cooking cleaning, helping with homework and giving the comfort and affection all children need in order to thrive. This system has worked well. This low Mother to child ratio means that the children get quality parenting in a healthy family environment. This was the motivation for the management to move the children from a dormitorystyle orphanage into a more intimate family environment. We believe education is the key to a child’s future. With this is mind we try to cater for the needs of children at all age levels. In 2001, we opened a nursery school for our youngest children, where they are taught to interact in a disciplined environment. Our pre-school children attend the Ekujabuleni Pre-Primary School based on the Community Projects. This provides them with stimulation and prepares them for their move to “big” school. Our older children attend the local primary school in the community. Tel: +27 (0)31 100 0111 Ext 7

Waterfall & Crestholme Development in the Upper Highway has happened at an unprecedented pace over the past 12 years with the suburbs of Kloof, Hillcrest and Gillitts being almost fully developed.

The widening of Inanda Road to a four lane highway as far as Link Road means the commercial heart of Waterfall is destined to grow to keep up with increasing demand.

As a result there is more interest in Waterfall and Crestholme which are remarkably beautiful parts of the world with magnificent views of gorges and valleys.

A new shopping centre is currently being built. This replaces the old Waterfall Shopping Centre.

The present inhabitants are hoping it will not be too densely developed and to this end the Ethekwini Planning Department have put a Development Plan in place that is intended to control growth by limiting the minimum size of sub-divisions. This will apply to complexes as well as freestanding properties and it will become increasingly difficult to re-zone agricultural land for housing development. It has changed from young couples starting out and earning in the lower to middle income bracket to more established families in the middle to upper income bracket.

This trend has a spin off for the economy of the area with local entrepreneurs reaping the rewards. The Mushroom Farm Free Range Shopping At Its Best THE MUSHROOM FARM site is located on the old working Chef Mushroom Farm. The main shed housing the majority of retail units are converted mushroom growing sheds. While the smaller shed was a composting plant in its previous life. Today, however, it is quite hard to imagine that Country Chic’s beautifully decorated rooms were once filled to the brim with smelly compost and that the Peel’s Honey Shop housed the staff toilets and change rooms. The first shop on the site was the Chef Mushroom Farmstall which sold wholesale mushrooms to the public. Over time a nursery was added to the little farmstall. The Mushroom Shop and Nursery was then followed by Garden Decor and The Veggie Shop and out of this small group of traders a centre “mushroomed”. Today the centre is home to an array of carefully selected shops. There are not many places in the bustling highway area where you can have an award winning cup of coffee whilst picking up fencing poles and fertiliser, getting advice on alternative eco-friendly energy solutions at SAFE GAS or doing retail therapy at Mrs Pinkerton’s, SENQU, Baby Best or Shambala but at The Mushroom Farm you can do all of this all the while having a chicken pecking at your feet.

Efforts have been made to create an environment which appeals to both local highway residents as well as meanderers from further afield who are looking for an outing on the weekends. The centre is not only home to a group of enthusiastic traders but it is also home to an ever growing animal farmyard. The goats rule the farmyard from atop a pile of rocks which have been aptly named Goat Mountain. The

goats’ subjects include a menagerie of ducks, chickens, guinea fowl and rabbits! There have been a number of great escapes by the rabbits and as a result, you will often come across a rabbit or two while you walk through The Rose Villa nursery. In line with the farm life, horse boxes and riders are also a common sight, as equestrians and animal lovers alike pop in and out of the centre to pick up feed, tack or to consult the vet!

SCHOOL OF MODERN MONTESSORI The school is situated in Gillitts, and offers preschoolers a ‘home from home’ environment where skills for life are developed. Maria Montessori, who was an Italian doctor & psychologist founded the method. She believed that children learn by experiences gained from their environment. She encouraged parents to make the most of the first six years. Each classroom is divided into various areas – all making the most of a child’s innate love of learning. In the Practical Life section the children develop co-ordination and dexterity and become independent by carrying out activities. In the Sensorial area children experience colours, sounds, touch, taste, dimension and weight. Activities help the children develop skills for reading and writing. They learn addition, subtraction, multiplication and division by using specifically designed materials. Cultural subjects are also tackled and help the children understand more about their world and their important place in it. Prospective parents are encouraged to have a consultation with the Principal, Yvonne Evans, at which point the child’s individual needs, the

CAWOOD ACADEMY A Nurturing Environment to Cultivate Extraordinary Minds. Cawood is a special needs school catering for a wide range of children, ranging from gifted to autistic. We develop each individual’s unique talents whilst remediating their developmental delays. Small classes enable the staff to spot problems and rectify them quickly. The children are accepted as “out of the box” thinkers who enjoy a hands-on approach to learning. P.E is non-competitive. Staff are experienced and knowledgeable about their particular areas of expertise. Our school pets add a unique touch to Cawood. The children are taught to handle them with respect and love. In return, it is not unusual to see a dog on a child’s lap or a cat sitting 0n a window sill in a classroom. CAPS is followed as a base-line. Discipline is based on “Respect”. Within boundaries we have flexibility. Cawood Academy is a “home-awayfrom-home”! Hillcrest/Kloof at a Glance 59

Website: www.rosewaywaldorf.co.za THE ROSEWAY WALDORF SCHOOL Founded in 1985 is committed to education as an art for fostering individual freedom and responsibility in each learner. In this way, Roseway develops a truly creative education that supports a journey of life-long learning. Our curriculum is designed to meet the developmental needs of the young person,

and gives the child experiences that build their cognitive, associative and imaginative skills. This ensures that lessons are both relevant and satisfying. The learner develops independent and creative thinking skills which prepares them for the world and the need to work with flexibility and diversity. The broad scope of the curriculum that brings this about is a unique aspect of Waldorf Education. Assessment is continuous and multifaceted. Areas included in assessment are creativity, movement skills, sport, social orientation, academic achievements, critical analysis and initiative. Our school begins with our Baby-group taking infants from 3 months into a warm and loving home-style day-care. “Little Rosebuds”, our play-group, is where play and imagination are used to develop the 3-4 year old. The Kindergarten (4-6 year old) fosters growth through social activities and uses art, craft and outdoor games to prepare the child for the Primary school. The High school up to and including matric, maintains a balanced programme of art, cultural and academic subjects. Extra-mural activities include a variety of sport and cultural activities. Set atop the beautiful Alverstone conservancy in the rolling hills of KZN, the school’s environment complements the educational work at the heart of Roseway which includes an organic marketfarm. Concerned for the development of social consciousness and ecology, Roseway works in a non-denominational Christian spirit to prepare all the learners to find their true identities.

This is a play activity programme developed by an Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist for babies between the ages of 2-12 months. The programme has been created to enhance sensorymotor learning, essential to a young baby’s development. How will my baby benefit? By stimulating the senses and challenging physical abilities, babies are encouraged to perceive, understand and act on the world around them. PURSUING POTENTIAL WITH KUMON At Kumon, our approach to learning is different. We develop children through the acquisition of independent learning skills, rather than teaching in the conventional sense. We equip your child to learn for themselves so that they do not become dependent on –or limited by - the skills and knowledge of others, we encourage a love for learning and self-confidence in tackling new challenges. Our outlook goes far beyond school life. We are thinking of the young adult your child will become. Through the Maths and English programmes, we will nurture your child’s independent study skills, so that they can apply this confident approach to everything they do – be it in school, work or life. To reap these rewards, a long term commitment from their family is essential.

We will guide your child to study at a level where they can concentrate and be motivated, allowing us to develop their ability and desire to learn independently, as a result, your child will realise there are no limits to what they can do. “It is our job as educators not to stuff knowledge into children as if they were merely empty boxes, but to encourage each child to want to learn, to enjoy learning and be capable of studying whatever he or she may need to or wish to in the future.” Toru Kumon (founder of the Kumon Method) www.kumon.co.za | 0800 002 775

At Kumon, your child’s work is individualised according to their needs and ability. When they attend the study centre, they are supported and guided towards not only the right answers, but also the right study techniques. The way in which students approach their work has a profound effect on their performance and their results.
