The Hillcrest Story The town began as a small holiday village in 1895 on the farm ‘Albinia’, owned by William Gillitt. The shape and size of ’Albinia’ shows it started as a Voortrekker farm. There is reason to believe that this farm may have been called Buffelsfontein or ‘Buffalo Spring’, inspired by the wetland in the present Springside Nature Reserve. It also tells us about the wildlife present in 1835. The main wagon road to Pietermaritzburg and the interior passed over the farm. When minerals were discovered, the wagon traffic increased. The Natal Government railway line was built through the area by 1879 and D.D. Fregona opened a store, near present Oxford Village, in the 1890s. Ernest Acutt leased a portion of Gillitt’s farm Albinia to start the village. The name Hill Crest (originally two words) was suggested by Senator Frank Churchill in the 20th century. Soul Restorer Family Ministries is a bible based church, developing disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. We are a satellite school for Teamwork Bible college for the Nations and invite all Christians who are keen to increase their biblical knowledge to register. Our professional counselling offered at the church has seen many family disputes resolved. It serves as a tool for holistic well being. Our fantastic Sunday School program called Treasureland, is facilitated by dedicated skilled teachers. Our program not only teaches children biblical stories but is structured to assist in character development. Prayer is the key to breakthrough and our power hour on a Wednesday evening is not to be missed. Our two services on Sunday mornings have proved to be convenient for different family dynamics. We look forward to serve you.

And just recently land was purchased on which it will be building DCC Hillcrest church. The land is in Kassier road, just off the corner of Old Main Road. Inanda Link Centre, 58 Inanda Rd, Waterfall

Waterfall & Crestholme Development in the Upper Highway has happened at an unprecedented pace over the past 12 years with the suburbs of Kloof, Hillcrest and Gillitts being almost fully developed. As a result there is more interest in Waterfall and Crestholme which are remarkably beautiful parts of the world with magnificent views of gorges and valleys. The present inhabitants are hoping it will not be too densely developed and to this end the Ethekwini Planning Department have put a Development Plan in place that is intended to control growth by limiting the minimum size of sub-divisions. This will apply to complexes as well as freestanding properties and it will become increasingly difficult to re-zone agricultural land for housing development. It has changed from young couples starting out and earning in the lower to middle income bracket to more established families in the middle to upper income bracket. The widening of Inanda Road to a four lane highway as far as Link Road means the

The Mushroom Farm Free Range Shopping At Its Best THE MUSHROOM FARM site is located on the old working Chef Mushroom Farm. The main shed housing the majority of retail units are converted mushroom growing sheds. While the smaller shed was a composting plant in its previous life. Today, however, it is quite hard to imagine that some of the shops were once filled to the brim with smelly compost! The first shop on the site was the Chef Mushroom Farmstall which sold wholesale mushrooms to the public. Over time a nursery was added to the little farmstall. The Mushroom Shop and Nursery was then followed by Garden Decor, The Veggie Shop and Peels Honey Hillcrest and out of this small group of traders a centre “mushroomed. Today the centre is home to an array of carefully selected shops. Efforts have been made to create an environment which appeals to both local highway residents as well as meanderers from further afield who are looking for an outing on the weekends. There are not many places in the bustling highway area where you can have an award winning cup of coffee whilst having a chicken pecking at your feet.

The centre is not only home to a group of enthusiastic traders but it is also home to an ever growing animal farmyard. Valentino the Cameroonian Goat rules the farmyard from atop his pile of rocks which have been aptly named Goat Mountain. His subjects include a menagerie of ducks, chickens, guinea fowl and rabbits! There have been a number of great escapes by the rabbits and as a result, you will often come across a rabbit or two while you walk through the centre.

THE KLOOF & HIGHWAY SPCA is situated in the mist belt of Kloof overlooking Pinetown on the property known as Glenholme. The communities we serve within our jurisdiction range from Westville to Cato Ridge and all areas in between. The Kloof and Highway SPCA provides a shelter for strays, abandoned and unwanted animals. These animals have no voice to speak out against cruelty and neglect and it is our society’s aim to be the voice of the animals in need. The SPCA movement does not only deal with domestic animals, but farm animals, wildlife and any of God’s creatures. Our Inspectorate is called upon to be anywhere ‘where man and animal interact.’ Our functions include basic animal care for the underprivileged, re-homing of animals, inspection and checks on abattoirs etc, outreach work, education and awareness of animal welfare. The Kloof and Highway SPCA are not government funded and therefore rely on the generosity of our community in 52 Hillcrest/Kloof at a Glance

order to sustain our vital functions. Animal overpopulation is our greatest concern due to the cycle of unwanted animals, suffering from hunger, diseases, parasite infections and often left to die alone. Our society conducts outreach clinics to sterilize animals and educate communities. Tel: 031-764 1212/3 EMERGENCY NO: 0733359322 www.kloofspca.co.za • Follow us on facebook

The Hillcrest AIDS Centre was founded in 1990 as a ministry of the Hillcrest Methodist Church, as a response to the then Minister’s conviction that the church needed to respond to the emerging HIV pandemic. Situated in the accessible and central town of Hillcrest, the Centre serves several povertytorn communities in the Valley of 1000 Hills region – one of the epicentres of the world’s HIV pandemic with estimated HIV-infection rates of up to 40-60% of the population in some communities. Over the past 21 years the Centre has expanded its suite of projects and programmes year on year, always in response to the needs on the ground in the communities we serve. Where a need has been witnessed, a plan has been put into place to respond to that need in a way that uplifts and empowers, rather than demoralises. We employ roughly 60 staff members, the majority of whom come from the surrounding

communities, and many of whom are infected or affected by HIV/AIDS and have come through our programmes. Today, our projects focus on three main aspects: care, poverty alleviation and prevention of new infections.

The School of Modern Montessori is situated in Gillitts, and offers preschoolers a ‘home from home’ environment where skills for life are developed. Maria Montessori, who was an Italian doctor & psychologist founded the method. She believed that children learn by experiences gained from their environment. She encouraged parents to make the most of the first six years. Each classroom is divided into various areas – all making the most of a child’s innate love of learning. In the Practical Life section the children develop co-ordination and dexterity and become independent by carrying out activities. In the Sensorial area children experience colours, sounds, touch, taste, dimension and weight. Activities help the children develop skills for reading and writing. They learn addition, subtraction, multiplication and division by using specifically designed materials. Cultural subjects are also tackled and help the children understand more about their world and their important place in it.

CAWOOD ACADEMY A Nurturing Environment to Cultivate Extraordinary Minds. Cawood is a special needs school catering for a wide range of children, ranging from gifted to autistic. We develop each individual’s unique talents whilst remediating their developmental delays. Small classes enable the staff to spot problems and rectify them quickly. The children are accepted as “out of the box” thinkers who enjoy a hands-on approach to learning. P.E is non-competitive. Staff are experienced and knowledgeable about their particular areas of expertise. Our school pets add a unique touch to Cawood. The children are taught to handle them with respect and love. In return, it is not unusual to see a dog on a child’s lap or a cat sitting on a window sill in a classroom. CAPS is followed as a base-line. Discipline is based on “Respect”. Hillcrest Primary is a dynamic coeducational public school situated on a four hectare campus in central Hillcrest. It offers an excellent holistic education, preparing pupils to enter any high school of their choice. It is noted especially for its outstanding Remedial Unit (grades 1 – 7), being a leader in IT, accelerated

classes (grades 5, 6 and 7), a broad sporting programme (all traditional sports) and a dynamic cultural offering (music, drumming, drama, etc.). Its progressive leadership and modern facilities cater to all needs, and ensures this is a much sought-after school. It would be a pleasure to show you around our beautiful campus. Moms and Babes Workshops have been running successfully around the country since 1992. This is a play activity programme developed by an Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist for babies between the ages of 2-12 months. The programme has been created to enhance sensory-motor learning, essential to a young baby’s development. How will my baby benefit? By stimulating the senses and challenging physical abilities, babies are encouraged to perceive, understand and act on the world around them. Through this programme, babies establish a sense of self and learn how to relate to others, which affects their physical, mental and social competence throughout life. Hillcrest Edufarm Playschool and Crèche. We endeavour to serve the community by offering quality service as a pre-school and day care. We have a homely atmosphere with lots of love, numerous indoor and outdoor opportunities and plenty of in- and outside playing equipment. Classrooms and playgrounds are spacious. Here children can still be children, run, play, climb and even experience a sky chair or super tube ride. It is a centre where children can learn to observe, understand and appreciate life as presented in nature. The farm atmosphere and picturesque setting of the facility lends itself to gardening projects, interaction with birds and smaller animals and mini “trails” where under supervision children can explore the wonders of nature, thus developing the hand, heart and the head. 4 - 36 months: The Duckling class taken by Jeanette (Nanna). 3 - 4 yrs: The Bunny class with Aunty Bernice. 4 – 6 yrs (Grade R): The Pony Class with teacher Irein. Classes are given in both English and Afrikaans and therefore we are a feeder school for Gelofte in Pinetown as well as all English schools.

WATERFALL EDUCARE is one of the very few, registered daycares and preschools that have stood the test of time! Opened in 1993 by Helen Spalding, a registered nurse, we strive to provide parents with the type of childcare they are looking for and their children deserve. The staff and owners realise it is a privilege and an honour to be entrusted with the care and early education of your child. As parents ourselves, we understand and respect how hard it is with having to leave your child in someone else’s care. Our staff are all qualified, passionate and dedicated. We are registered with the Depts of Health, Social Development and also Education. Waterfall Educare is KZN’s only READ FOR AFRICA licensed preschool. This amazing literacy programme ensures children receive the correct foundations and puts them well ahead of the pack! Our children enter Grade 1 at various private and government schools throughout the Highway area, where they almost always receive glowing reports from the outset. We keep our classes small so can unfortunately only offer a limited number of spaces to new children each year. To secure your space, don’t hesitate to call Helen on 031-762 1274 / 082 490 2887.
