The Victoria Street Market (031 306 4021), Durban’s original Indian market, is situated in Berta Mkhize Street and opens daily to sell everything from brass ornaments, curios and clothing to fish, spices and music.

The Amphitheatre Craft Market (031 301 3200) is open every Sunday 09:00-16:00 on Durban Beachfront, with the focus on curios and textiles. Located behind Greyville Racecourse, First Avenue, the Greyville Car Boot & Second Hand Clothing Market (083 300 2999) takes place on a Sunday between 05:00 and 15:00. ENTERTAINMENT The Playhouse (031 369 9555/9456) situated at 231 Anton Lembede (Smith) Street in the CBD is an important performing arts venue housing three theatres: the Opera, Loft and Drama.

Run on the last Friday of the month from 17:30-22:00, the Rivertown Night Market located at 8 Morrison Street has some of the best slow-cooked food and creative dessert traders in Durban, not to mention craft products that are strictly made in South Africa, live music and a kids’ area. The African Art Centre (031 312 3804) at 94 Florida Rd nurtures and promotes the work of original artists and craftspeople, and showcases a variety of high quality fine art and Zulu beadwork. Every purchase made from the African Art Centre provides income and employment for more than 600 artists and crafters currently supported by the Centre.

Until 14 Jan Buzzart17, which includes Durban’s biggest local Christmas fair, has the theme of ‘SEA Change’, with sea-related submissions part of the curated exhibit.

ATTRACTIONS The beaches along KwaZulu-Natal’s golden coastline are a huge drawcard for tourists, with nine full Blue Flag beaches in Durban’s eThekwini municipality including uShaka and Westbrook (both for two years in a row), and those at Amanzimtoti, Brighton, Umgababa, Umdloti Main & Tidal, and Umhlanga Main, with pilot Blue Flag status.

The Ekuphakameni Shembe Settlement is the first settlement of Isaiah Shembe’s religious community of Ibandla LamaNazaretha, and houses the original temple built in 1918 by Shembe volunteers. Thousands of believers gather here every January for the annual pilgrimage to the holy mountain of Nhlangakazi, and again in July for a festival of dance and praise.

The Hindu Temple bears witness to former residents of Clermont – Indian farmers who sold their produce at local markets here and further afield.
