This township originated in 1845 when the British occupied Natal in force and established a number of native locations for the Zulus. It is a fine venue for anyone interested in experiencing township life, and offers shebeens, domestic lifestyles, nyanga’s shops, artwork and jazz. The township is what South Africa is, it is the pulse, the heart beat of the country, the country that was built on the backs of the people.

WHAT’S ON…UMLAZI ATTRACTIONS Places of interest in Umlazi include How Long Park, which was founded in 1976 by Michael Fana Mlangeni, who maintained and improved it with his own funds until he was employed by the Municipality as caretaker in 1998.

Umlazi is the third-biggest township in South Africa and has its own unique number plate – NUZ. It is also rich in historical, cultural and political heritage. It is where a new African urban culture is developing. Umlazi is famously known for its urban vibey lifestyle. From the fashion, to the entertainment, urban shopping malls, first-class sport facilities and eateries such as Eyadini, Max’s Lifestyle, Nuz Vegas, Sdis Tavern, and more.

Another site of importance is the home of lawyer and struggle stalwart Griffiths Mxenge and his wife Victoria, both of whom were killed by Apartheid forces during the 1980s.

Umlazi boasts a beautiful park – How Long Park (now a host venue to a number of musical shows). Enjoy 360° views of Umlazi from Inwabi mountain summit, which stands at approximately 360 metres above sea level.

THE Clermont KwaDabeka Tourism Development’s aim is to give tourists a township experience and teach them about the history of Clermont and KwaDabeka - which goes back to 1848 when German settlers were brought to Natal by Jones Bergtheil, who bought a farm called Kranskloof.

WHAT’S ON…CLERMONT ENTERTAINMENT

ATTRACTIONS Serving as a sanctuary for political activists during the apartheid era, the Catholic Church was built in 1938 after the Lutherans had invited the Roman Catholics to start a Mission in Clermont. Founded in 1858, the Lutheran Mission Station of Christiananburg is one of the oldest places of worship in Clermont.

Clermont is a hub for arts and culture, and is home to the Grammy award winning isicathamiya group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, as well as other successful artists such as the Clermont Choir, Msawawa, and many more. Contact 031 711 2326 for further information.

Every year, some 3 million people gather on pilgrimage at St John’s Apostolic Church – also known as KwaMasango. Clermont is also the birthplace of the Shembe religion, being the site of Isiah Shembe’s residence and temple before he moved to the Inanda Area.

With good food, good music and an A-list clientele, the Comfort Zone (061 156 6068) is a popular and upmarket jazz lounge which maintains a smart dress code.

The Hindu Temple bears witness to former residents of Clermont – Indian farmers who sold their produce at local markets here and further afield.

Offering a true township experience, Tate’s Kasi Grill (82 833 1810) is a butchery where friends can enjoy some delicious shisanyama (grilled meat) while dancing to the sounds of popular local DJs and artists.
