The gentry of Durban built their homes on the Berea in scenic surroundings with orchards, paddocks and fields. Ridge Road and Musgrave Road were among the first to be established.

Today busy shopping centres, hospitals and schools, blocks of flats, and homes on smaller stands, have to a large extent changed the character of the once rural suburb. Some of the gracious mansions from this bygone era remain, and a number have been converted to business premises.

CLIMATE

THE EARLY DAYS The Berea was named by the missionary, Capt. Allen Gardiner in 1835. It later expanded to become one of Durban’s most popular residential areas and assigned distinctive names for its various suburbs, e.g. Stamford Hill, Toll Gate, Stellawood, Morningside, Glenwood and Montpelier. In the early days residents of Durban, to avoid the heat and dust of the town centre, moved out to the suburbs. The Berea was popular as living conditions were more pleasant on the ridge, with spectacular views of Durban.

The Berea enjoys a pleasant subtropical climate all year round. The warm Indian Ocean moderates the winters, with the average maximum temperature being 23˚C. Summers can be hot and humid, but easterly sea breezes help to cool the air. The average maximum temperature in summer is around 28˚C. Rain can fall throughout the year, with most falling in the summer months. FRONT COVER PHOTOGRAPHS: Durban Botanic Gardens, Glenwood Village Centre, Gordon Road Girls’ School, St Cyprian’s Church

FATHIMA TIMOL, SPEECH THERAPISTS AND AUDIOLOGISTS Imagine not being able to speak or hear. Any communication difficulty may encounter obstacles to communication, academic performance or employment. Speech Therapists and Audiologists are involved in the assessment and management of those with any speech, language and hearing difficulties. Communication disorders include poor clarity of speech, language delays, stuttering, swallowing disorders or a speech impairment following stroke or brain injury. These can all be improved with appropriate intervention. Children develop speech through our sense of hearing. When we struggle to hear our ability to communicate is compromised. Audiologists identify a hearing loss and offer suitable treatment. They also fit and repair hearing aids, syringing of ears, school screening and hearing conservation.

THREE MONKEYS COFFEE BAR For those 40 something and above Durbanites mentioning the name The Three Monkeys Coffee Bar brings back warm fuzzy memories of dressing up in your best to go to town and starting your shopping trip with coffee and a delicious treat all to the wonderful aroma of coffee beans at The Three Monkeys then situated at the African Life Arcade.

Road Glenwood. With fine Sandwiches, hot dogs in the original Three Monkeys tradition and delicious milkshakes on offer together with a fine medium brew house coffee sees Bob enjoying his new trip down memory lane.

Bob Humphries started his coffee bar in 1968 and it endured right into the 90’s with a few additions and regenerations to the menu and a change of venue to the Pine Arcade. Not only was it a coffee bar but uniquely in those days it was one of the only places that you could actually buy coffee beans to take home. With its warm and quaint atmosphere, friendly service and great food it is no secret as to why this coffee bar endured. After many years in the industry Bob eventually moved on to other ventures but the lure of the great coffee shop concept has finally drawn him back to his original passion and at long last The Three Monkeys has re-emerged to offer its customers the same wonderful originality, service and atmosphere at The Glenwood Village Centre situated in Moore Berea at a Glance

GREYVILLE RACECOURSE Say the suburb name ‘Greyville’ to the average Durbanite, and you will discover it is virtually synonymous with the Durban July and Durban’s first and longest running sports venue - the Greyville Racecourse. In 1996, history was made when it became the first track in the country to successfully install floodlights, enabling the course to accommodate night racing at all its midweek meetings.

DURBAN BOTANIC GARDENS Currently the oldest surviving botanical gardens on the African continent and the City’s oldest public institution. Initial development began in 1849 as a botanic station for the trial of agricultural crops. From 1851 the Durban Botanic Gardens began to be developed as a botanical garden run by a curator. Today the Durban Botanic Gardens has progressed to being part of a global network of botanic gardens with focus on core areas of biodiversity, education, heritage, research and horticultural excellence. A Trust was formed in 1995 which undertakes various fund raising projects such as the Music at the Concert Lake series which was started in 1995, a range of public lectures by plant and environmental experts and a programme to showcase youth in music and drama. The building of Visitors Complex is the single largest project undertaken by the Trust and comprises offices, an information centre and two function rooms used for corporate and social functions and educational lectures.

The Gardens, with help from the Trust, continues to offer a diverse range of curriculum-based handson learning programmes for schools designed to encourage learning about the value of plants and the importance of biodiversity education programmes. MITCHELL PARK Mitchell Park and Zoo offers spacious shady lawns, landscaped gardens and a playground with jungle gyms, swings and slides. Durbanites enjoy this Park with its spectacular, colorful flower beds, which are redesigned and replanted every season. In 1928, the Maharajah of Mysore presented the City Council with Nellie, an Indian elephant, who resided in the Mini Zoo and thrilled visitors with tricks which included blowing on a mouth organ and cracking coconuts with her feet. Today the Mini Zoo delights with aviaries of exotic birds, ducks, raccoons, wallabies, peacocks, small buck, monkeys, tortoises and even crocodiles. If you’re lucky you may even spot the elusive bush babies. The park is named after Sir Charles Bullen Hugh 18

Since then the farm has been transformed into a zoo, hosting a variety of animals and species that once roamed freely in this natural wonderland of the Kwazulu-Natal province. There is even a walkthrough aviary that will allow you to get close and personal with many of the beautiful bird varieties on display. Of course, a zoo is not a zoo if it does not cater for children. A sand-filled playground has been constructed to allow small children to play on jungle gyms, swings, slides and other fun equipment, whilst the parents may sit down and relax amongst nestled trees and flowerbeds while enjoying a meal at the tea garden. There are carefully tended lawns that are perfect for family picnics, and even skottle gas braais are allowed. THE DURBAN & COAST SPCA has been ‘speaking for animals’ for over 100 years. From humble beginnings in 1897, we have grown to a large and successful organisation operating from spotless, modern premises in Springfield Park. The day-to-day running of the organisation is undertaken by a highly qualified and dedicated team of veterinarians, inspectors, kennel staff, and admin staff. We receive no state funding and are reliant on the community we serve for operating costs. Each year hundreds of children find themselves living on the streets of South Africa. They are driven from home by poverty and abuse only to become trapped on the streets in a life of drugs, sexual exploitation, begging and crime. Founded by the late Graham Cochrane, in 2002, I Care is a non-profit Christian organisation, which is community based and engages directly with children on the street. To date we have rehabilitated more than 500 street children, and our biggest success stories are those of the children that we work with. Our drop in centre is in Greyville, and it is here that the boys come off the streets daily and we see to all their basic needs, feed them two hots meals a day, supply them with hot showers and laundry facilities, as well as have structured programmes that run throughout the day. Shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War (1939), it was decided to move the church to Umbilo Road in Congella. The foundation stone was laid (by Bishop Vernon Inman) of a fine new building, in the form of a Byzantine Cross, which incorporated the magnificent stained glass windows formerly adorning the Smith St church.

This Anglican Church, named in honour of Africa’s first Bishop and Martyr, St. Cyprian, traces its history back to the early days when Durban was a harbour town of fewer than 6 000 inhabitants, and a group of worshippers met on Sundays in the billiard room of the Trafalgar Hotel. The first church building, erected in 1870 in Pine Terrace was replaced in 1877 by a stone structure in Smith St, costing 4 000 pounds sterling. Daily celebration of the Holy Eucharist began in Sept, 1899, at the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War, during which Durban was crowded with refugees.

This year marks our 3rd Matric class. Classes are small between 10 and 13 children on average. The Department of Education mainstream CAPS curriculum is followed. Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy and Psychological assistance are on hand in the Therapy Block, although this is not part of the school fee. HOLY FAMILY COLLEGE - Gr 000 – Matric | ADMISSIONS NOW OPEN Situated on a hill in the beautiful suburb of Glenmore, with panoramic views from Durban Harbour through to Moses Mabhida Stadium; is a Catholic school, with roots that reach back 140 years. A school with a staff of passionate teachers dedicated to building, developing and growing confident young leaders from Gr 000 to Matric, who will go out and change the world. Quid Retribuam is our motto and means “What shall I render?” This is the essence of what we instil in our pupils. We believe we are growing confident leaders, and an essential part of this is teaching them to give back to each other and to society. We prepare our young people to embrace the world. This combined with a strong foundation of Catholicism, prepares them for any situation they encounter. This is a school with a long and proud tradition. The Sisters of the Holy Family Congregation came to Durban from Bordeaux, France in 1875, at the request of Bishop Jolivet, who asked them to establish a “school for young ladies”. The school began its life on the site of the present Durdoc Centre in Smith Street, in 1875. It then moved to a site on St. Andrews Street a few years later, before finally moving to its present site in Convent Close, off Rick Turner Rd, Glenmore, in 1962.

The College has been through many changes over the years, from being an all-girl Convent school (Convent High), to a co-educational school; and from a school that was run by the Holy Family Sisters to one now being run by the Catholic community. Holy Family College was one of the first schools in Durban to open its doors to learners from all ethnic groups; because of this we now authentically reflect the demographics and population structure of our city and country. As a result we have become a united and happy ‘Holy Family”. We pride ourselves in producing well-rounded young people, with a keen understanding of the world at large. Our students are not just prepared academically, but also spiritually, emotionally and physically. As a Catholic school, we believe in grounding our students in our Catholic ethos and providing them with the tools to embrace their own individuality. Our teachers are passionate about ensuring that each child learns and grows at his/her own pace.
