THE EARLY DAYS The Berea was named by the missionary, Capt. Allen Gardiner in 1835. It later expanded to become one of Durban’s most popular residential areas and assigned distinctive names for its various suburbs, e.g. Stamford Hill, Toll Gate, Stellawood, Morningside, Glenwood and Montpelier. In the early days residents of Durban, to avoid the heat and dust of the town centre, moved out to the suburbs. The Berea was popular as living conditions were more pleasant on the ridge, with spectacular views of Durban.

The gentry of Durban built their homes on the Berea in scenic surroundings with orchards, paddocks and fields. Ridge Road and Musgrave Road were among the first to be established. Today busy shopping centres, hospitals and schools, blocks of flats, and homes on smaller stands, have to a large extent changed the character of the once rural suburb. Some of the gracious mansions from this bygone era remain, and a number have been converted to business premises.

CLIMATE The Berea enjoys a pleasant subtropical climate all year round. The warm Indian Ocean moderates the winters, with the average maximum temperature being 23˚C. Summers can be hot and humid, but easterly sea breezes help to cool the air. The average maximum temperature in summer is around 28˚C. Rain can fall throughout the year, with most falling in the summer months. FATHIMA TIMOL, SPEECH THERAPISTS AND AUDIOLOGISTS Imagine not being able to speak or hear. Any communication difficulty may encounter obstacles to communication, academic performance or employment. Speech Therapists and Audiologists are involved in the assessment and management of those with any speech, language and hearing difficulties. Communication disorders include poor clarity of speech, language delays, stuttering, swallowing disorders or a speech impairment following stroke or brain injury. These can all be improved with appropriate intervention. Children develop speech through our sense of hearing. When we struggle to hear our ability to communicate is compromised. Audiologists identify a hearing loss and offer suitable treatment. They also fit and repair hearing aids, syringing of ears, school screening and hearing conservation. If you have any concerns about speech and language development or hearing contact your local speech therapist/audiologist as soon as possible.

She refers to her dedicated and knowledgeable staff as her family, as they have shared in the growth of the business with her, over many years. All of them have a common goal – service, service service!

Some of her customers will remember the time when Nellie originally operated from a flat across the road from the Glenwood Village Mall. Since moving over to the Mall they have increased their client base over and over again, thanks to the wonderful customers that have supported them and have become friends over the years.

Barbara ensures her prices are competitive and knows the products they are selling. She enjoys coming to work every day, and is blessed with a wide spectrum of customers, many of whom are now friends after all these years. She has watched clients from their school days through to being new parents themselves.

Nellie knew the need for a Haberdashery shop in the area of Glenwood, and was thrilled when Maxprop offered her a shop in the mall. They have a wonderful selection of yarns from the mills of Saprobes outside of East London, and from as far as Turkey, Bulgaria, and Indonesia.

Barbara would like to give her thanks for their support in helping her to make VILLAGE HARDWARE a well known landmark. Being old fashioned, Barbara does not trade on Sundays or Public Holidays as this is ‘family time’. However, during business hours Barbara and her staff endeavor to offer friendly and knowledgeable help, and are always willing to go the extra mile. ONE STITCH @ A TIME Nellie Botha, owner and Manager, is assisted by Heather Price.

LOLLYPOPZ is a successful child care facility that was established in 2001. It was taken over in 2006 by Mrs. Candice-Lee Dennis, who adopts a very “hands on” approach with every aspect of running the school. This year Lollypopz celebrated their 15th Birthday with a school picnic for the children who all decorated their own birthday cupcakes; played party games; had their faces painted and enjoyed the fun of bubble machines to celebrate this very special milestone. Lollypopz launched their Reception Unit in 2010. In January 2013 a BRIDGING GRADE R class was introduced to ensure that all children move on to start their formal schooling career (Grade 1) at the correct age. They follow a fantastic school curriculum, ensuring that the children who graduate from Lollypopz are well prepared for Primary School. All age groups are kept separate 34
