Health & Beauty ELIJAH’S HOME is a Nursing Home that offers residents frail care, mid care and assisted living. We endeavour to provide our residents with professional nursing and care. We offer a warm and loving environment, clean rooms and facilities, and nutritious, tasty meals. We pride ourselves with the view that we are a “home’’ and not an institution. Families sometimes join their loved ones over lunch or tea Elijah’s Home, formally known as Orchard Lea, has been trading as a Nursing Home for almost thirty years. As such, a large proportion of our residents are referred to us by family, friends and doctors in the community.

FATHIMA TIMOL, SPEECH THERAPISTS AND AUDIOLOGISTS Imagine not being able to speak or hear. Any communication difficulty may encounter obstacles to communication, academic performance or employment. Speech Therapists and Audiologists are involved in the assessment and management of those with any speech, language and hearing difficulties. Communication disorders include poor clarity of speech, language delays, stuttering, swallowing disorders or a speech impairment following stroke or brain injury. These can all be improved with appropriate intervention. Children develop speech through our sense of hearing. When we struggle to hear our ability to communicate is compromised. Audiologists identify a hearing loss and offer suitable treatment. They also fit and repair hearing aids, syringing of ears, school screening and hearing conservation. If you have any concerns about speech and language development or hearing contact your local speech therapist/audiologist as soon as possible. Berea & Dbn North | 3

Health & Beauty Have you ever wished you had professional nursing help at home? NURSERVE is your answer! They are a Nursing Agency specializing in nursing care in the comfort of the patient’s own home. They have a team of Nursing Sisters who could assist you with dressing of wounds as well as catheter care. They could also be called upon for an assessment of a wound and guidance in the most appropriate dressing of such. Their Nursing Sisters are constantly updating themselves with the latest dressing techniques and come highly recommended by many of the surgeons with whom they work closely. This, however does not necessarily mean the most expensive dressing, but in reality could save you a lot of money by recommending the correct dressing instead of wastage by using the wrong dressings! Their panel of dedicated nursing staff provide full time or even part time nursing for those needing extra help at home. This could be arranged on a daily, nightly or even half day basis. Nothing seems to be too much to handle for this bunch of dedicated nurses ! And to top it all – they do all the paper work for you and claim from the medical aid for their service. What a pleasure! We recommend you give them a ring at 031 – 201 2077 or e- mail them info@nurserve.co.za Established in 1963, BILL BUCHANAN ASSOCIATION for the Aged has a long and proud tradition of caring for the elderly for more than 50 years. The Berea was named by the missionary, Capt. Allen Gardiner in 1835. It later expanded to become one of Durban’s most popular residential areas and assigned distinctive names for its various suburbs, e.g. Stamford Hill, Toll Gate, Stellawood, Morningside, Glenwood and Montpelier. In the early days residents of Durban, to avoid the heat and dust of the town centre, moved out to the suburbs. The Berea was popular as living conditions were more pleasant on the ridge, with spectacular views of Durban. The gentry of Durban built their homes on the Berea in scenic surroundings with orchards, paddocks and fields. Ridge Road and Musgrave Road were among the first to be established. Today busy shopping centres, hospitals and schools, blocks of flats, and homes on smaller stands, have to a large extent changed the character of the once rural suburb. Some of the gracious mansions from this bygone era remain, and a number have been converted to business premises.

PISCES SWIMMING ACADEMY Eddie Meth and his team of coaches faithfully strive to improve the standard of swimming for our children. Many of the top achievers in swimming received their basics from the learn-to swim teachers and are now making us proud with their achievements. Yet another young Pisces swimmer topped his age group at the recent KZN Junior Championships held at the Kings Park Olympic swimming pool. The latest achievement was by Tristan Kyd with an impressive medal haul of 3 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze in his six events. Tristan also qualified to compete at the Swimming South Africa’s Junior National Championships. His coach Brenton Meth said “Tristan has the potential to go all the way to international level”. Pisces have many other young swimmers coming thro’ the ranks.
