HEALTH & BEAUTY FATHIMA TIMOL, SPEECH THERAPISTS AND AUDIOLOGISTS Imagine not being able to speak or hear. Any communication difficulty may encounter obstacles to communication, academic performance or employment. Speech Therapists and Audiologists are involved in the assessment and management of those with any speech, language and hearing difficulties. Communication disorders include poor clarity of speech, language delays, stuttering, swallowing disorders or a speech impairment following stroke or brain injury. These can all be improved with appropriate intervention. Children develop speech through our sense of hearing. When we struggle to hear our ability to communicate is compromised. Audiologists identify a hearing loss and offer suitable treatment. They also fit and repair hearing aids, syringing of ears, school screening and hearing conservation. If you have any concerns about speech and language development or hearing contact your local speech therapist/audiologist as soon as possible. HOW CAN AN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST HELP A CHILD? Occupational Therapists specialise in identifying strengths and weaknesses in a child’s motor and sensory systems. These systems form the foundation of a child’s behaviour and ability to learn and develop through play and schooling. Common concerns that benefit from occupational therapy intervention strategies are: • Gross motor and fine motor delays; • Visual perceptual and visual-motor difficulties (poor writing, drawing, colouring); • Sensory processing issues (poor body awareness, balance and coordination); • Poor academic skills; • Lacking attention and self-regulation; • Lack of independence in daily tasks. OT’s target and improve these skills, as well as enhance strengths to help a child cope with difficulties. Berea & Dbn North | 3

HEALTH & BEAUTY Have you ever wished you had professional nursing help at home? NURSERVE is your answer! They are a Nursing Agency specializing in nursing care in the comfort of the patient’s own home. They have a team of Nursing Sisters who could assist you with dressing of wounds as well as catheter care. They could also be called upon for an assessment of a wound and guidance in the most appropriate dressing of such. Their Nursing Sisters are constantly updating themselves with the latest dressing techniques and come highly recommended by many of the surgeons with whom they work closely. This, however does not necessarily mean the most expensive dressing, but in reality could save you a lot of money by recommending the correct dressing instead of wastage by using the wrong dressings!

BEREA

GLENWOOD / BEREA The Berea was named by the missionary, Capt. Allen Gardiner in 1835. It later expanded to become one of Durban’s most popular residential areas and assigned distinctive names for its various suburbs, e.g. Stamford Hill, Toll Gate, Stellawood, Morningside, Glenwood and Montpelier. In the early days residents of Durban, to avoid the heat and dust of the town centre, moved out to the suburbs. The Berea was popular as living conditions were more pleasant on the ridge, with spectacular views of Durban. The gentry of Durban built their homes on the Berea in scenic surroundings with orchards, paddocks and fields. Ridge Road and Musgrave Road were among the first to be established. Today busy shopping centres, hospitals and schools, blocks of flats, and homes on smaller stands, have to a large extent changed the character of the once rural suburb. Some of the gracious mansions from this bygone era remain, and a number have been converted to business premises.

EDUCATION ASSUMPTION PRE-SCHOOL provide care for children aged 18 months to six years. Our motto “we can always make plan” encourages children to think for themselves, thus preparing them for life. We believe in active learning and have created a stimulating, nurturing environment in which learning through play and active participation is key.
