Kaiser Permanente is a nonprofit healthcare provider as well as an insurance plan. Part of its mission includes improving the health not just of its members, but of the community as a whole. Amy Whited, manager of Public Relations and Digital Media for the organization, says, “Kaiser Permanente is invested in giving back to the community and into programs that are going to improve community health.” 70
Case in point, Kaiser is a main sponsor of the HBO Documentary Film series, “The Weight of the Nation.” The films take a look at the obesity epidemic from every angle: agriculture, economics, evolutionary biology, food marketing, racial and socioeconomic disparities, physical inactivity, American food culture and the power of industry. It was created in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Institute of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health in an effort to educate the public about the American obesity epidemic.
