Publisher’s Letter

The Courage To Become More Las Vegas Woman takes a stand.

U

ntil recently, Las Vegas Woman had been part of a larger corporate publishing company. In early 2012, we decided to part ways with this publishing company and stand as an independent publication. Taking this new path has now proven to be the right decision. What you hold in your hands is the largest issue in our publication’s history. It gives me great pleasure to present to you the fall issue of Las Vegas Woman. Branching out on our own, there were a few outspoken critics that questioned our capability. I’d like to think that’s what courage is all about: taking a risk, stretching ourselves and not letting the judgments of others affect our ambitions. Every now and then, there will be critics who may attempt to tear you down. I urge you to not to take the words of those critics personally, just keep moving forward towards the accomplishment of your dreams. This issue of Las Vegas Woman is part of my dream … and I am grateful that our publication team, the advertisers, readers and community are all part of this dream. I would like to send a huge thank you to our supportive advertisers. It’s with their advertising dollars that enables Las Vegas Woman to make a larger impact in our community. This allows us the resources to bring to you insightful articles that highlight individuals in our valley, events, health, families, the arts and so much more. We have a passion for giving back and have been making strides to continue to raise our involvement with local charitable organizations. Here are a few notable mentions: • • • • •

Became members of United Way’s Tocqueville Society, Women’s Leadership Council, Young Philanthropists Society and Templar group. Was accepted to sit on the Board-of-Trustees for New Vista. We are continuing the organization’s 28-year mission to empower the disabled community. At the Adam & Eve charity auction event benefiting New Vista recently, Las Vegas Woman’s table donated over $7,000 thanks to a generous donor, Christopher Dean. Las Vegas Woman sits on the Executive Leadership committee of the Go Red for Women event for the American Heart Association. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer in women and we are passionate about building this awareness and finding a solution. I personally renewed my membership with the Circle of Red, affiliated with the American Heart Association. This is a dynamic and committed group of women who have made a personal commitment of $2,500 to help find a cure for heart disease. I encourage you to join this amazing group of women.

Along with these organizations, our mommy-to-be editor, Jennifer Florendo, continually contributes to JDRF and sits on the YMCA Committee Advisory Board. In the coming months we are excited about our plans to become more involved with the March of Dimes, a passion of our Vice President, Ruth Lauber. We are thriving at Las Vegas Woman. I am humbled by the outpouring support of our community and our publication’s team members. These supporters are contributing to Las Vegas Woman’s mission to educate, entertain and inspire … in a nutshell: they are making Las Vegas a better place for all of us who live here. Embrace life, community and yourself,

Editor’s Letter

I

! y b a B Oh

n our spring issue, I announced to the world via Facebook and other social media that I was expecting my first child due in the fall. While I wait for the rag mags to throw hundreds of thousands of dollars at me for the first photos of Baby Flo and some weight-loss companies to give me a multi-million dollar contract to lose the weight within an ungodly amount of time, I put together the baby registry. Talk about overwhelming. At our first visit to our first baby store, I lasted a whopping 90 minutes ONLY to add five things to the registry. A good portion of that time was spent sitting with my feet up in various rocking chairs and thinking about this registry is such a process. Thank goodness for friends and sisters who have gone before me into the realm of motherhood and have given me great advice on what I really need. It helped to save me additional (and future) meltdowns. Yes, there have already have been a few. Here are some of the very cool things I’ve discovered that may not be on the standard registry checklist:

The Ultimate Carrier Comfortably carries newborns and babies up to 45 pounds, fits both the mom and the dad, and can be worn a number of ways. This product released in August and I can’t wait to try it out! Learn more at illebaby.com.

The Tummy Tub I love the concept of this tub: It is shaped and sized like the mother’s womb to give baby a warm and cozy bath experience. I don’t like getting out of a warm shower into cold air, why should baby? Available at Belly Bliss Spa or tummytubusa.com

Massage at Belly Bliss Spa So the niece and nephew can’t try this one out for me, but a salon dedicated to pregnant women? Yes, please. Massages, facials, waxings (Sometimes you just can’t reach anymore, ask for Tessa. She will take care of you!) are all available by talented aestheticians, therapists, and a warm and cheerful staff. desertperinatalspa.com. 5761 South Fort Apache, 2nd floor Baby Flo is due to arrive in late October, just before the holiday issue comes out. So stay tuned for updates and hopefully photos of the little one!

The Blooming Bath Not only is this an adorable piece of décor, it looks comfy for baby. This soft, cushiony bloom fits perfectly into the sink, cuddles baby and is easy on mom’s and dad’s backs. $40, bloomingbath.com Photo by Connie Palen

Cheers! o d n e r o l F r e f i Jenn As I navigate my way through mother-to-be-hood, I welcome recommendations, tips and advice from those who have gone before me. Email your comments to jennifer@lvwomanmagazine.com and we may just print your tidbits in an upcoming issue.

Super Star, Showgirl

& Mother… It was all in a days work for Bonnie Saxe who raised her children in the spotlights of Las Vegas

A

sk any woman and chances are they will agree that the phrase “working mother” is redundant; “super human” is more like it. They serve as cook, chauffeur, caregiver and fixer-of-allthings before they even head to the office each day. Now add the titles of dancer, choreographer and show producer into the mix and you get Las Vegan Bonnie Saxe. During the “glory days” of Las Vegas entertainment, Saxe graced the stage of the Tropicana Hotel in the world-famous “Les Folies Bergere” and as a “Jimmy Durante Dancer.” A breath-taking beauty by any standard, the technically trained dancer shined as brightly as any star on the Strip, soon creating a showbiz legacy destined to span several generations. From a small town in Tennessee, Bonnie became a professional dancer at the age of 12. While visiting Las Vegas in 1968, she took a chance and went to an open audition for “Les Folies Bergere.” Saxe landed the role and ended up moving to Las Vegas for good where she would meet her future husband, bandleader Dick Saxe. Bonnie Saxe worked a grueling performance schedule through the years with her little ones, Suzanne, Melinda and David, always in tow. Growing up among fancy, feathered costumes and showgirl vanities, the three would eventually carry on their

family tradition, but in different ways. “My girls are natural-born dancers,” said Bonnie Saxe. “Suzi was the first to perform on stage, beginning her career at 16 years old. Melinda was also a teenager when she started dancing in “Siegfried & Roy.” It wasn’t long before Saxe noticed Melinda possessed the talent and skill to excel in a profession traditionally dominated by men … magic. “What makes Melinda so unique is her ability to combine dancing and music,” said Saxe. “I set up a studio in our home where we would rehearse new tricks and illusions every day.” The entire family then worked together to build a show around her. Dick Saxe financed the production, younger brother David did the lights and sound, sister Suzanne danced and Bonnie produced it. “Melinda - First Lady of Magic” opened at Bourbon Street

Casino in 1986 making Bonnie Saxe Las Vegas’ first female show producer. The show was a major turning point for the Saxe family. Melinda went on to become the most famous female magician in the world as David Saxe continued down his path, producing more shows than anyone in Las Vegas with two theaters at Planet Hollywood’s Miracle Mile Shops: Saxe Theater and V Theater, where Melinda currently performs in his “V The Ultimate Variety Show.” Of course every parent is proud of their children’s accomplishments, but for Bonnie Saxe the adoration and pride she feels for her family goes much deeper. “They followed in my footsteps and now I’m starting to see the same traits in my grandkids. I love every facet of entertainment. I would do it all over again.” 5

How the United Way is making a difference in the lives of women

W

omen’s Leadership Council of United Way of Southern Nevada understands the difference one hanger can make in a woman’s life. On the first Friday of every November, the WLC hosts their annual oneday suit drive. The impact one outfit can make for a woman who is starting on a new path in her life is invaluable. She may be leaving an abusive relationship, preparing for a job interview or going to her first day of work, but having a new suit helps inspire confidence in any woman. Nowhere was the impact of donated suits more apparent than during the Women’s Leadership Council Annual Luncheon held February 7 in the Palace Ballroom at Caesars Palace. During the luncheon, Mitzi told her story about a back-to-work program and her new suit from the drive that helped her to get her back on her feet and obtain a job. “When I think about my life and all the hardships that I had to go through, and I know that there will be many more to come, I just keep telling myself … I’ve been down so long there is no place else for me to go but up,” said Mitzi. “And thankfully getting up and moving upward isn’t quite so hard anymore.” When Mitzi stood to be recognized, a member of the WLC recognized the suit Mitzi wore as one she had donated. Imagine the impact to not only know, but to see the transformation your suit makes in someone’s life in our community.

To many women who donate a suit, it is often an outfit that they no longer wear because they have retired, lost weight or have outgrown it. Whatever reason, what happens to the clothes that are dropped off at WLC’s one-day suit drive? Will this outfit make a difference for someone else? As a result of the 2011 WLC Suit Drive, more than 5,700 professional items were collected including suits, dresses, shoes, handbags and jewelry. Items collected benefitted Safe Nest, S.A.F.E. House, the Shade Tree, Goodwill of Southern Nevada Career Connections, HopeLink and Help of Southern Nevada’s Work Opportunity Readiness Center. This year WLC will also be partnering with the Women’s Development Center. All of these accredited United Way agencies have back-to-work programs for women. Because of the generous donations to the annual suit drive, the lives of women are impacted in a positive way. It gives these women the tools to build confidence as they take back control of their lives. It is … changing lives one hanger at a time! The Women’s Leadership Council, co-chaired by Cindy Brinker and Deb Mele-Blanchard, bring women philanthropists and community leaders together to inspire others to take action and create long-lasting change in the community through education, health and financial stability. Since its inception in 2007, the WLC membership has grown to over 100 members. For more information about the Women’s Leadership Council or the suit drive, please call Lawrel K. Larsen, Director of the WLC at 7902.892.2319 or Lawrell@uwsn.org. 5

Fall Arts Guide Compiled by Katherine Fernelius

Las Vegas Woman brought you a few of the art offerings around the city during the summer months and hopefully, you made it out and saw a sampling of the fine art that is making its way to Las Vegas galleries and museums. Take a look at our Fall Arts Guide and make some time to enjoy some of these exhibits as

August The Pop Up Art House (730 W. Sunset Road) pays homage to an influential past generation and genre with the show “80s Vegas: The Scene.” The show, which is open through August, will present photography from the Las Vegas punk and alternative music culture of the 1980s, as seen through the lens of a modern social network. Concentrating on color and composition, “Paint it Up,” showing at Sporadica Designs Gallery inside Emergency Arts (520 Fremont St.), will feature layered and textured paintings. With the under layers peeking through the top ones, each piece is unique, interesting and shows the depth of the canvas and artist. If you didn’t make it over to Sin City Gallery (107 E. Charleston Blvd. Suite 100) for Steve Diet Goedde’s exhibit, “NEW WORKS,” you still have time. The exhibit will showcase Goedde’s recent erotic photographic explorations that expand his traditional means of taking images. “The Garden of Forking Paths,” which runs through August 23, at the Contemporary Art Center (107 East Charleston Blvd.), brings together three recent bodies of work from the individual oeuvres of Philadelphia artists Katie Baldwin, Nichola Kinch and Katie Murken. Through twodimensional and sculptural works, each artist explores the dialogue between space as it is imagined and space as it is experienced. 26 | lvwomanmagazine.com

well. The weather is finally cooling down, so now is the time to see great art in Vegas. As more time goes on, the arts continue to grow and impress many in this fine city of ours. Don’t miss it!

The Brett Wesley Gallery (1112 S. Casino Center Blvd.) will present “A Study of Navels,” featuring work and installations from Chris Bauder. In this show, Bauder turned liquid latex house paint into shape through the process of dipping and dripping, pouring, peeling and stuffing creating plastic environments of semi-organic forms and patterns laden with sensual overtones.

Sean C. Jones opened his show Aug. 3 at Blackbird Studios (1551 South Commerce St.). In his artist’s statement, Jones said, “In our age of Google searches and hundreds of cable channels overwhelming our senses, the imagery of our past collides with the present. … These thoughts haunted my head in the twilight hours of insomnia and I soon resolved to somehow manifest them in paintings. … Hopefully, by juxtaposing the past with the near present, I can attract a new generation to these treasures before they are lost in a pile of electronic mayhem.” COLAB, a new architecture and design gallery to join the downtown arts scene, will be exhibiting its Young Guns show featuring seven designers selected by a blind jury. “It is difficult in the architectural profession for the young guys /gals to establish themselves, and it is known that most architects do not gain a name for themselves until they are white haired,” explained Amy Finch, director and founder of COLAB. “This show was a way to help promote and celebrate local young designers who are great designers and doing great work.”

From August through September 13, the Windmill Library (7060 W. Windmill Lane) will exhibit its sixth annual “Diversity in Clay” by member of the Nevada Clay Guild. The show will focus on pottery created using various clays (earthware, stoneware and porce) and kilns (electric, gas, soda kilns, pit firing and raku firing).

Opening September 7 at the Contemporary Art Center, “Unpopular Music” by Purdue University MFA graduate Aaron Nemec, explores the complex listener-performer relationship in pop music culture through a series of recent audio projects constructed as videos and objects. Fancois Dubeau will present his color work titled “The Beautiful Accident” at Sin City Gallery from September 6 through October 20. Many know Dubeau from his elegant black-and-white work. Of his new work, Dubeau says, “My color work is borne of totally different roots than my black and white work. These two bodies of work are at opposite ends of the spectrum, but nevertheless complement one another. They are my yin and yang.”

September 1-8, the Off the Strip New Genres Festival invites the community to take part in a dialogue with participating local, national and international artists. Established by the Contemporary Arts Center in 2009, the Off the Strip New Genres Festival showcases contemporary performance art and video. The Brett Wesley Gallery will be featuring new works by nationally recognized fashion photographer Jana Cruder. In 2010, Cruder produced a compelling body of work that explores femininity and the lasting affects of Barbie’s iconic influence on our culture and perceptions of beauty. In her new series she has brought Ken into the picture. With Ken and Barbie, she takes a humorous approach to sexuality, identity and the dichotomy of the male-female relationship in the 21st century. “Games People Play” brings Sporadica Designs Gallery back to its roots of found-object art. All pieces will have a vintage game board as their base. Playing on the notion that as a society we no longer sit around a table communicating on a personal basis to play a game, the assemblages will reflect this lack of personal communication and camaraderie. Be the artist! Social Paintbrush (7501 W. Lake Mead Blvd., #118) invites you to come and unleash the artist within! Offering multiple opportunities every month to paint under the direction of different artists, Social Paint Brush is an interactive and fun way for individuals to enjoy music, mingle and paint their own masterpieces, providing a true “social art” experience. Visit socialpaintbrush.com for more info.

September “Mr. Big,” an exhibit by Giovanni Morales, will open in September at The Brett Wesley Gallery. Morales is known for his multi-layered popart style paintings that take inspiration from collage, sign writing and old-fashioned comic strips. While working with mainstream iconography, Morales creates a visual framework that is bold, adventurous and creates a lasting impression.

October “Into the Wild,” a collection of surreal watercolors, oil paintings, hand-cut china and a site-specific installation, opens October 5 at Blackbird Studios. Las Vegas artist Su Limbert weaves elusive narratives through a recurring cast of female and animal characters. Her ethereal characters explore themes of vulnerability and empowerment and keep the magic of childhood alive through their dialogues with nature.

Internationally renowned photographer Justice Howard will exhibit her “Rude, Crude and Tattooed” imagery at Sin City Gallery, October 26-Novemver 25. Howard is rated as one of the top 20 tattoo photographers in the world, has more than 500,000 images in her portfolio and is known in more than 25 countries. Howard’s technique is vibrant and crisp, supernatural and intense, alluring and compelling. Every shot stands illuminated and shines above and beyond other known works.

Southern Nevadans urged to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association SHOW of STRENGTH - a Labor Day institution By Marcia Pledger

N

o other organization has done as much to raise awareness toward the cure of muscle disease as the Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon. That’s why Nevada companies like Eglet Wall law firm are joining in the fight. With Las Vegas serving as the host for 29 of the telethon’s 46 years, the partners of Eglet Wall are among the latest major sponsors to take part in the Labor Day weekend televised event that attracts global superstar talent. After sponsoring an array of charities for many years, the law firm decided to focus on MDA because 77 percent of every dollar raised goes to research, services and education. It also serves more than 430 families in Southern Nevada. “Myself, my partners and many of the members of the staff were raised here,” said Robert Eglet, senior partner, and the only lawyer named trial lawyer of the year twice by the Nevada Trial Lawyers Association. “It’s very important that a large percentage of the money raised here serves the needs of families in Southern Nevada.” Rachel Commeford, executive director of MDA of Southern Nevada, said $61.5 million was raised at last year’s telethon for research for the more than 40 neuromuscular diseases including ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, named for the legendary New York Yankee. Commeford said more help is needed for worldwide research, medical care, medical equipment and 240 support groups. The organization also helps send 4,000 children to a week-long annual summer camp. A sponsorship of just $30 pays for an annual flu shot for a child, while $150 pays for physical occupational respiratory or speech consultation. A $500 donation can pay for a year of repairs for medical equipment including wheelchairs. And an $800 donation takes care of summer camp for kids.

Robert Eglet

The staff of Eglet Wall Make A Muscle For MDA. “Money is critical for research and in helping families deal with the harsh realities of this disease, but we need volunteers just as much,” said Commeford, who runs the non-profit agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy. “Kids as young as 16 can volunteer at the summer camp. They tend to take away as much joy as they provide.” This year, broadcast from Los Angeles, the format for the telethon has been changed to a three-hour pre-produced entertainment special called “Show of Strength.” The show airs from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., September 2 on KNTV Channel 13. Judge David Wall, Ret., a partner at Eglet Wall, said he encourages other companies to get involved. “We had the opportunity to meet many of the families who deal with MDA on a daily basis,” he said. “Their strength and courage sets an example for all of us.”

One local organization helps women get suited up for their future

M

aking a great first impression on a job interview is one key to getting hired. Dress for Success Southern Nevada helps disadvantaged women get suited up for their job interview. The mission of Dress for Success is to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. Potential employers are assessing an applicant the minute she walks in the door. The clothes she wears while looking for a job can be the one competitive edge she may have with other applicants who have the same skill set and education. Her appearance is her virtual resume; showcasing that she understands the importance of the job she is interviewing for and tells the person who is interviewing her that she genuinely desires and deserves the position. Dress for Success provides each woman with one suit when she has a job interview. When she successfully lands the job, she returns for additional business-appropriate separates that will help build her professional wardrobe. We approached Debbie Tuss, the coordinator of Dress for Success Southern Nevada’s Going Places Network, for a makeover to help showcase a confident new look that Dress for Success candidates can experience. Tuss’ look was too young and outdated. She needed a fresh, new look that would help convey a more professional, serious attitude. We gave Tuss a more mature, polished look that exudes confidence. 30 | lvwomanmagazine.com

We tossed the jeans and T-shirt and provided Tuss with a dark, tailored suit by Evan Picone, the perfect look for a job interview. The straight, angular lines give Tuss an authoritative, formal look that positions her as a leader and authority figure. The look is empowering; it increases her confidence and credibility. The skirt hits Tuss at the knee, always a foolproof and flattering hemline. Tuss sports a pair of burgundy Etienne Aigner pumps that are trendy, yet appropriate for a business look. We brighened Tuss’s conservative suit with a single bold accessory: silver hoops by the jewelry line Lia Sophia. For Tuss’ makeup, we sought out makeup expert Lori White, owner of Lori J White Makeup Artistry, to give Tuss a workforce-worthy makeover. White opted for neutral shades from Urban Decay’s Naked Palette to bring out Tuss’ green eyes. Paradise lipstick by Rimmel and a creamy lip gloss by NXY completed her natural look. Next up it was time to tame Tuss’ hair. White used a touch of Clear Glaze by Ulta to coat Tuss’ hair and make it silky smooth. To cut out the frizz, White opted for a product called Silky Dirt in Sweet Almond. Tuss’ curly hair was straightened with a flat iron and looks silky smooth and job ready. With a little bit of guidance, Dress for Success candidates are ready to take that confident step toward their future. hose of us who are confident in our everyday style can become frazzled when it comes to packing for a trip and traveling with effortless style. I know many people who are so excited to go on vacation or that business trip and, the day before the trip, they haven’t packed yet. We come home from work; we’re leaving the next day and still need to pack. That’s stressful. So the allimportant question becomes: how can you prepare to travel with a minimum level of stress?

32 | lvwomanmagazine.com

Rubeli

I can’t promise you truly stress-free packing, but I promise packing will be easier if you have a plan. Here are five things to think about before you attempt to start your packing. I call these “The Five W’s of Travel.” 1. Who? Who is going on this trip? Is it just you or are you responsible for packing other family members? 2. Where? Where are you going and how many days will you be gone? 3. Why? Why are you going on this trip? Is it a weekend getaway? A family vacation? A business trip? 4. What? What activities will you be doing and do you need to pack special clothes? 5. Weather. Check the weather for your destination to make sure you are dressed appropriately.

Many people start to protest once I talk about staging, saying it takes too much time, but what about all the time you’ll spend rifling through your closet stressing over what to pack? Or the time and money wasted shopping for things you think you might need? Think about the stuff you’ll bring that you won’t wear—it’s now wrinkled and needs to be thrown in the laundry again or ironed … now that adds up to a lot of time. Now that you’ve staged everything, organize your outfits in a daytime and evening schedule. You’ll start to see your entire wardrobe for the trip and maybe even eliminate a few things by seeing what mixes well with what. You may even be able to leave a few pieces behind after realizing you can mix and match certain pieces together. Look for as many opportunities possible to repeat or reuse the items you’re bringing. By applying these tips and techniques, you will be able to travel confidently and enjoy your trip to the fullest. 5

One rule of packing that never changes—no matter where you’re going—is to travel with as little as possible. If you can’t lift your luggage by yourself, you’ve packed too much. Try making one carry-on or one checked bag your max. Planning what you’re going to take with you and even more importantly, what you’re not going to take, is usually where the stress begins. Before you put things in the suitcase, I suggest staging everything. Staging is your dress rehearsal prior to packing. Pull out the items you think you want to take and put them out in full view, along with the accessories, shoes and handbags. Always make a final check for missing buttons or anything that you won’t be able to fix while away.

KABUKI

Japanese Restaurant

The Far East comes to Las Vegas in a relaxed, fun atmosphere

By Debbie Hall

T

he goal of Executive Corporate Chef Masa Kurihara and Master Sake Sommelier Yuji Matsumoto of KABUKI Japanese Restaurant is to incorporate the Japanese dining culture into the culinary landscape of the United States. Opened since 1991, KABUKI Restaurant operates 13 restaurants in Arizona, and California, and two in Nevada, including Town Square and Tivoli Village. Envisioned as high energy, family friendly and value oriented, the concept is to entice and satisfy without the extra calories or loud music. The word “KABUKI” is actually a form of traditional Japanese theater that began during the Edo Period in the 17th century.

These theater groups traveled extensively to perform for villagers and commoners and not for royalty and the privileged. Predominantly made up of male actors dressed in extravagant costumes and supernatural makeup, they told stories of love, moral conflicts and historical events. Thus, the restaurant’s name means that this is a place for all with a chance to share life’s events and create memories. Master Sake Sommelier Matsumoto is one of only two certified sake sommeliers in the country and is responsible for hand selecting the sakes and creating new sake cocktails. Along with libations, a happy hour and reversed happy hour menu is featured without the guilt of “bar” food.

Salad choices include seaweed, tofu or spicy tuna. Selections of rolls are available including California, vegetable, shrimp tempura and salmon skin. Mixed tempura, sesame chicken and broiled mussel on a half shell are also offered. Happy hour (with a more extensive menu) is Monday through Friday 3 to 6 p.m. and reversed happy hour is Monday through Thursday 9 p.m. to close and Sunday 8 p.m. to close. Specialties include cornbread muffins with maple butter, pecan caramel sticky buns, cheese-filled tortellini salad with smoked salmon, traditional Caesar salad, southern fried chicken, homemade macaroni and cheese, Creole chicken, and homemade fruit cobbler. Wynn Las Vegas Encore By Debbie Hall

Pioneering an extensive vegan and vegetarian culinary program

I

n 2010 Wynn Las Vegas and Encore became the first resort on the Las Vegas Strip to offer vegan and vegetarian menus at all of its 21 restaurants. This innovation in the hospitality industry allows guests to choose healthy options when dining out. As part of its commitment to providing wholesome options, Wynn and Encore have partnered with Tal Ronnen, celebrated vegan chef and author of “The Conscious Cook,” to create innovative new vegan menus and collaborate with Wynn and Encore chefs. “We changed the menu in every outlet from the employee cafeteria to in-room dining to every restaurant,” Steve Wynn, Chairman and CEO of Wynn Resorts, said during a recent press conference. “This is not about eating celery sticks and carrots all day. … It’s about making rich, delicious, tasty food that has plant-based ingredients, not animal-based ingredients.” “I am excited to work with the esteemed Wynn and Encore chefs to introduce my vegan cuisine to Las Vegas,” Ronnen said. “I hope diners will find that eating meat- and dairy-free cuisine does not have to feel like a sacrifice, but a step-up.” The vegan menus will include salad, appetizer, soup, entrée and dessert options. One main ingredient used in many of the vegan dishes is Gardein; a plant-based protein made from soy, wheat and pea proteins, vegetables, and grains such as quinoa, amaranth, millet and kamut. Gardein is free of cholesterol, trans or saturated fat and is also animal and dairy free. Known for his extensive steakhouse menu, Executive Chef David Walzog of Lakeside Grill and SW Steakhouse has teamed with Ronnen to create vegan dishes. At SW Steakhouse, entrees include spring vegetable risotto; Gardein vegan “meatballs” with tomato sauce and creamy polenta, and sautéed Gardein chick’n with peperonata and sherry vinaigrette. and Ronnen introduced tasty vegan dishes such as agnolotti, small pockets filled with vegan ricotta, herbs and asparagus sauce. Chef Jet Tila demonstrates inventiveness with dishes such as vegan crunch roll made with string beans, cucumber, avocado and topped with Japanese rice crackers; vegan California roll made with avocado, cucumber, asparagus and brown rice wrapped in seaweed; and shiitake-nagi sushi with roasted, seasoned shiitake mushrooms and vegan eel sauce. Botero, a 2011 AAA Four Diamond Award recipient, is a combination of fine art and flavors of Chef Mark LoRusso and now offers the Chef’s vegan tasting menu consisting of five courses. At Tableau, an American bistro with a twist, Executive Chef Joseph Leibowitz offers a vegetarian menu for breakfast including “eggs” Benedict with Gardein sausage, scrambled tofu and yellow tomato ”hollandaise” sauce. The lunch menu features choices such as white bean stew with Tuscan kale or pan-roasted Gardein chick’n with tomato fondue, escarole and micro greens.

At La Cave Wine and Food Hideaway, dining is available in an intimate setting or outside on the garden-inspired patio with choices by Executive Chef William DeMarco that include gluten free, dairy free, meat free, fish and shell fish free, vegetarian, and vegan. For those who love Italian cuisine, Stratta at Wynn offers vegan selections such as vegetable caponata pizza with eggplant, zucchini, bell pepper stew, golden raisins, pine nuts and soy cheese. For more casual dining, ZooZaCrackers Deli’s menu offers choices that are dairy free, peanut free, egg free, soy free, fish free, shellfish free, tree nut free, wheat/gluten free and vegetarian including its matzo ball soup made with vegetable stock and egg substitute. Always a pioneer in the hospitality industry, vegetarian and vegan choices in all of the restaurants are more than just following a trend. Wynn eats what he says in that he has embraced the vegan lifestyle and, while not forcing the issue, is just making it a part of the Wynn Las Vegas and Encore dining experience. rape Street Café has been in business since 1997 and, 14 years later, is still thriving as the place to go to enjoy a glass of wine, dine or share in the many events involving music and art. Chef John Mckibben, owner and chef, said, “An extensive menu allows my customers to come to Grape Street Cafe a couple of time a week and have choices. One person at the table can have a four cheese pizza and another can order the filet Oscar. Our customers have favorite items on the menu so we don’t change those but offer seven to eight daily specials to keep it interesting.” One of the most requested appetizers at Grape Street Café is Baked Brie, a pastry pouch filled with creamy brie, toasted hazelnuts, caramelized onions and apricot preserves. Chef Mckibben also prepares over a dozen desserts daily including profiteroles, a puff pastry with ice cream. Grape Street Café maintains a retail license and bottles of wines are available for purchase, with an ongoing special of 50 percent off all bottles. On Monday, Grape Street Café offers 50 percent off bottles of wine for those dining in the restaurant. As for the emphasis on art, Chef Mckibben explained, “Wine and art go together and make a perfect pairing. Many of my friends are artists so it is great for them to display their art, have the customers walk around drinking some great wine and everyone having a good time.” Grape Street Café has earned a “very good to excellent” rating from Zagat for its food, Gayot ranks it among the “best examples of the California cuisine experience” and one of the “Top 10 Wine Bars in Las Vegas.” 5 7501 W. Case

Logic

By: Les Kincaid

Stocking up on fall selections from the vine Why Buy a Mixed Case of Wine? Having a mixed case in your house is like having a little nest egg for a rainy day. When you buy your mixed case, visit a retail wine outlet that you trust, or one that’s been recommended to you by friends. Such a store will have an educated staff to suggest specific wines fitting both your budget and the general categories outlined below. Two Bottles of Riesling Perfect with any kind of Asian takeout, riesling is one of the world’s most misunderstood and under-appreciated grapes. Rieslings tend to be lower in alcohol, are wonderfully aromatic and can range in style from dry to slightly sweet. Excellent rieslings from the United States and Germany range between $10 and $20. I’d head for the dry or off-dry bottles with their crisp apple and citrus flavors. Two Bottles of Unoaked Chardonnay A roasted chicken from the supermarket is great for a quick dinner. The ideal pairing for such a meal is unoaked chardonnay. Chardonnay’s buttered apple flavors bring out the best in the bird. Now that many winemakers are no longer using toasted oak barrels in favor of stainless steel aging, chardonnays are less expensive and more food friendly. Expect to pay around $15 to $20 for a good bottle. Two Bottles of Sparkling Wine It’s versatile, affordable and can turn a tuna sandwich into a festive event. Ask your wine outlet to select a Spanish and an Italian sparkling wine for you. Use one bottle as an excuse to invite friends to weekend brunch and keep the other one for a celebratory night. Try the very most popular bubbly from Barefoot to cover the bases. Neither should cost more than $15, plus there are some very good Spanish and Barefoot sparklers for under $10.

Three Bottles of Sicilian Red Wine Sicily is the best place to find Italian red wine bargains. Wines from this region are juicy, flavorful, and the ideal mate for pizza, pasta and burgers. The most common Sicilian reds include Nero d’Avola and Nerello Mascalese, two zesty grapes that produce full-flavored, fruit-forward wines with nuances of leather and flowers. Expect to pay as little as $8 and as much as $20 for a bottle, depending on the reputation of the producer. I have never spent more than $15 for a Sicilian red—and I’ve never been disappointed.

Dr SU???

Three Bottles of Beaujolais I’m not talking about the Nouveau released in November. I’m talking about real Beaujolais wine, made from the world’s most popular gamay grape and sold with some age to them. It has the same silky texture, fresh cherry-berry flavors and earth aromas as pinot noir. But at around $8 to $15 a bottle, it’s much more affordable. Often served slightly chilled, they’re perfect with grilled foods, stews and cheese dishes, which make them the ideal red transition wine as we move into fall. And You Have 12 Bottles Even if you purchase wines at the higher end of the price spectrum that I’ve recommended, your mixed case of 12 bottles will cost you around $215 plus tax. The cash you spend now will save you from a lot of aggravation and last-minute running around later when friends drop by for dinner or you’re late getting home from work and want to add wine to the meal. 5

The

MOB|BAR

By Debbie Hall

Bringing back old-school sophistication to cocktails Just down the street from the Mob Museum is the Mob Bar, downtown Las Vegas’ newest metropolitan center. The Mob Bar is one of Las Vegas’ most sophisticated lounges and is reminiscent of a supper club of the Roaring ‘20s. Along with traditional libations, specialty cocktails are created by bartenders— don’t call them mixologists—Alverrie Pinto and Vince McCarty who have a desire to take ideas and turn them into drinks. “It is all about the product, making it fun and how you present it,” McCarty said. “Also, my big thing is service. When you walk into this bar, I want to make you feel like I am your best friend and we’ve always known each other.” McCarty explained that is not because the bar pays homage to a different time but that the management “wants me to have fun and be myself. I like that and people appreciate that.” McCarty gets his inspiration from Pinto and experiments with different creations. What makes this different from other establishments is that both Pinto and McCarty know the reason why they are creating the drink. A cocktail is never made just for the sake of mixing ingredients or trying something different. “One night a couple of regulars came in and asked if I could create a sweet potato pie martini for them,” Pinto said. “I looked at them, and I was very hesitant but then the creative mind went into overdrive within minutes. I couldn’t perfect it since I didn’t have marshmallows at the bar, and I would have liked to include burnt marshmallows but I did create a sweet potato pie martini for them, which probably brings back fond memories.” As for current trends, Pinto said, “Fernet-Branca (an Italian liqueur) is really hip in the cocktail world right. Now, the exact recipe of Fernet-Branca is a secret but the producers, Fratelli Branca Distillerie, do say that it contains 27 different herbs and spices taken from four continents. It is very herbaceous. When you breathe in the aroma, you get the cooling scent.” Food is also offered with the menu created by the executive chef of sister restaurant Triple George Grill and includes items ranging in price from $5 to $10. 5

N

ot long ago you were getting in shape for swimsuit season. Then you hit a few barbecues and made time for a trip out of town, but skipped a few trips to the gym. It’s easy to think that upon returning from vacation, if the scale hasn’t moved, then you got a hall pass from the glutinous eating while vacationing. Kathy Keating, who recently returned from Laguna states, “I thought I was doing well (with) managing my weight while on holiday because I was walking so much.” After her jeans felt tight, she realized that she had, in fact, returned not only with souvenirs but also a higher body fat percentage. By replacing her high intensity cardio with casual walking, eliminating weight training and dining out frequently, Kathy had increased her body fat and decreased muscle mass. Since muscle is more dense and heavier than fat it didn’t reflect on the scale, only when she tried on her jeans. If this sounds familiar, keep reading to get yourself back on track after summer fun.

Back to Fitness 101: 1. Set goals. Goal setting keeps you focused on being proactive rather than reactive. Include short-term goals such as: I’ll only eat out twice this week as well as long-term goals such as I want to lose 20 pounds by my class reunion. 2. Planning. Individuals who create plans are likely to reach their goals. Plans can include watching nutrition documentaries such as “Food Inc.”, trying new vegetables or keeping your gym bag in the car. 3. Diet. Food journaling is the most important tool to losing weight because individuals discover their nutritional habits. Apps such as Lose It! and MyFitness Pal make it easy to keep track of calories in versus calories out. 4. Exercise. Studying only addition won’t get you the best grade in math class. You also have to study subtraction, multiplication, etc. The same goes for fitness. The body acclimates to an exercise within 10 days so incorporating new moves, such as the one below, into your workouts increases calorie burning. 5. Hiccups. It’s one thing to ditch class, another to drop out. Just as one would not quit school after receiving a poor test score, one should not surrender living healthy if a few pounds return. Rather than moving from one extreme to another, it’s best to consistently eat healthy and exercise. Then you can treat yourself occasionally and still be able to fit into your jeans.

Caring for Your Child’s Diabetes is a

family affair By Sandy Mundell

Tips from a parent of a Type 1 diabetic

E

ach year more than 15,000 children are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. As a parent, learning that your child has Type 1 diabetes can be devastating and daunting. Everything you’ve ever heard or read about this disease goes through your mind. As you listen to the doctors explain what needs to be done to manage this illness, it is easy to feel helpless, unprepared and overwhelmed. I know because I went through the same thing when my 8-year old, Christopher, was diagnosed in June 2011. Take a deep breath; you can get through this. Here are a few tips from my experience to help you get through being a parent of a child with diabetes. The best thing you can do is arm yourself with information about Type 1 diabetes. There are many books and articles on the topic making it easy to get educated. Talk about what you learn with your child so they gain an understanding of the day-to-day of the disease. There are even books written specifically for children to help them learn on their level. You may also want to explore a good support group. Allow family and friends to be there for you as you adjust to this new lifestyle for your family. Remember to educate those who frequently care for or spend time with your child. They need to know how to manage his diabetes in your absence. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is a great source of information and news. Their members are made up of parents and other relatives of diabetics, as well as diabetics themselves, including many teens and adults who have lived many years with diabetes. I joined our local chapter a few weeks after Christopher’s diagnosis and that was a huge help, as I met other parents who had been through what I was facing. Since diabetes focuses on food, specifically carbohydrates and numbers— blood glucose levels, insulin intake and counting carbohydrates—your kitchen is a good place to set up a diabetes station. I have a small section on my counter where I keep Christopher’s daily logbook, his supplies, a carb-counting book and calculator. This way I can keep track of what he’s eaten during meals, calculate it and give him his insulin dose all in one convenient place. I also keep a list of frequent meals, drinks and snacks that he enjoys and their carbohydrate amounts for quick referral. In the beginning it may all seem so discouraging, but believe me, it soon becomes second nature. Always remain positive. Your child will be looking to you for guidance and help in coping with this disease. If you treat it negatively, then your child may become bitter and resentful, which may hinder his treatment and health. In our family we’ve come to think of diabetes as just another part of our lives. We try not to make a big deal about it and neither does my son. Go Mt. Charleston: Explore, Learn and Volunteer

By Katherine Fernelius

Fun with the family is just a short drive away

G

o Mt. Charleston: Explore, Learn, Volunteer is a recently launched campaign to get Las Vegas locals more connected with the vast outdoor experience the Spring Mountains have to offer. We sat down with Suzanne Hicks of the Southern Nevada Conservancy/U.S. Forest Service to find out what this project has in store for our community and how we can get involved, take advantage, and protect this natural resource in our backyard. Las Vegas Woman: What is Mt. Charleston’s new campaign “Go Mt. Charleston: Explore, Learn, Volunteer” about? What is its message? What are the goals of the campaign and when did it start? Suzanne Hicks: The Go Mt. Charleston project was created to help the Las Vegas community better enjoy and care for the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area, more commonly known as Mt. Charleston. Our mission is to provide opportunities for people to explore and learn about this natural resource and to encourage stewardship of the area through volunteer programs. LVW: Let’s break down the campaign. There are three parts: Explore, Learn and Volunteer. Can you tell us about each part and what sorts of programs, activities and/or volunteer work are included in each part? SH: We chose these three words as the tagline to describe the three main ways people might experience the mountain. Explore: Through our website and social media we provide information for people who want to explore Mt. Charleston. Our site serves as a comprehensive resource for people to help them plan their trip and find the experience they are looking for when they visit. Learn: Through our education programs we offer a wide range of opportunities for people to learn about the Spring Mountains. We hope that through our programs, people will not only have fun and learn about the mountains, but also walk away with a greater respect for

the mountain ecosystem, leading to a desire to help take care of this public natural resource. Volunteer: Through all of our efforts we are striving to create a feeling of stewardship for the Spring Mountains among the Las Vegas community. This is a wonderful natural resource for the public and we all need to do our part to take care of it. We need volunteers for various positions including trail hosts to help hikers; visitor center hosts to help provide information to visitors, volunteers to help pick up litter and keep the mountains clean, and, in the winter, snow hosts to help people have fun and be safe while playing in the snow. There are also simple things that everyone can do to make a difference like taking your trash with you after a picnic or taking care not to disturb plant or animal life while hiking. LVW: What sorts of activities are included in this program? SH: Part of what we do is to provide programs to the public to help them explore and learn about the Spring Mountains. Our programs include guided day and night hikes, campfire programs, guided snowshoe hikes in the winter, and special programs for kids including junior ranger and science safaris. All programs are currently free to the public. We also (host) our annual Spring Cleaning event. This past May was the fifth year we’ve had the event. More than 169 volunteers picked up more than 2,230 pounds of litter. This event is made possible through the partnership and support from other various private and nonprofit organizations. LVW: How can people get involved? SH: People can see the schedule of programs on our website, gomtcharleston.com. People can also stay in touch with us through social media by liking us on Facebook, facebook.com/gomtcharleston and following us on Twitter, twitter.com/ gomtcharleston. Those interested in volunteering can check out opportunities on the website or send an inquiry to volunteer@gomtcharleston.com. lvwomanmagazine.com | 59

Sack your Snack, Pack your Pail and Call it Healthy As the new school year approaches, explore new and different lunch ideas for your growing kids

M

By Dominee Apple and Tonya Anthony

ost people feel that packing a homemade sack lunch for school is a healthier alternative for their children. This theory has many pitfalls that can turn a healthy plan into a processed-food nightmare. In reality, many sack lunches can be loaded with pre-packaged foods that contain large quantities of saturated fat, salt or sugar, such as potato chips, cookies, candy and sugary drinks. Not that these items should be completely eliminated, but definitely consumed in moderation. This is where reading the label on a lot of the commonly packed foods for lunch can greatly assist in making better choices for your child. With today’s busy lifestyles, it is difficult to avoid some of the quick and easy options that seem to always be right at your fingertips. Making a healthy sack lunch can sometimes feel like a chore, especially when it’s easier to hand over some cash for a school lunch you don’t have to prepare (as mothers ourselves, we don’t judge!). In an effort to meet budget constraints, schools can sometimes offer lunch menus that adhere to very minimal nutritional standards. If a school lunch is your preference, consider subsidizing by packing a healthy snack to ensure your child’s proper nutritional intake. Choices are key for your kids. Letting your child make a list of the foods they would like to have for their lunch helps to develop great mealplanning skills. This goes a long way in empowering them to take a more active role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Encourage them to balance flavors such as sweet and savory, as well as different textures like soft, crunchy or chewy. Kids like things they can eat with their fingers and they can recognize. Regardless, the final decision of what will constitute a healthy and well-balanced lunch will ultimately be the responsibility of the adult. A healthy lunch should provide one-third of your child’s daily nutrition requirements. The following requirements will ensure that your portions stay small and on target: • One serving of protein-rich food (meats, fish, eggs) • One serving of carbohydrate or starchy food (breads, pasta, rice) • One serving of calcium-rich food (yogurt, milk, cheese) • One serving of fruit or unsweetened dried fruit • One serving of vegetables (salad, carrots, celery) • One drink (beverages should be calorie free or low in sugar) • One serving of water CrumbSnatchers Lunchbox eBooks offers great new lunch ideas for tots, teens and everyone in between. Moms making

Six Figures A real-life testimonial

W

hen Christina Thebeau gave birth to her second child, she realized she was no longer going to be able to work outside of the home and be a full-time mom. As a certified public accountant, Thebeau was used to working long hours, which took away from her family time in the evening. She was so excited when her friend Cheryl Toste introduced her to Moms Making Six Figures because she found the flexibility she needed for both her professional and personal life. Moms Making Six Figures was founded in San Diego and now has a group of over 40 women, all who work from home. This group of moms created the marketing company Moms Making Six Figures to represent one primary organization, and they come from a variety of backgrounds including human resources, information technology and, like Thebeau, CPAs. As a newlywed in her mid-30s, Toste was anxious to start a family. She is so excited that she is expecting her first child in January. “The lack of stress, and flexibility in my schedule gave me the opportunity to focus on starting a family. And I am very fortunate that I was able to get pregnant right away,” Toste said. “I love working, and I am still able to work part time as a CPA to supplement my loss in full-time income with Moms Making Six Figures,” Thebeau said. “I am thankful that Cheryl shared the company with me, and I know that she will appreciate the flexibility when she has her baby.” Thebeau and Toste have had many friends in Las Vegas who have lost their jobs or had their hours cut with the turn in the economy, and they are thankful that they are now able to share Moms Making Six Figures with them. Through Moms Making Six Figures, Thebeau and Toste meet with interested women to talk with them about the specifics of the business. “A typical workweek can range from part-time or full-time hours, but I plan around my schedule,” Thebeau said. “There is no inventory, no party planning, no selling and no risk, but you do need to be self-motivated and have a desire to succeed,” she explained. Both Thebeau and Toste work very hard and both say they have so much fun working together. “I am so glad that I am able to work with one of my best friends,” Thebeau said. “We have no cap in our income, and we work on our terms.” “We truly are living the motto of Moms Making Six Figures,” Toste said. “We are ‘bringing women home to their lives.” 5 To learn more about Moms Making Six Figures, please visit momsmakingsixfigures.com.

S

ummer will eventually fade, like your tan, but the sun’s harsh and damaging ultraviolet rays will hold on well into fall and beyond. Not everyone likes to slather on the sunscreen, but if you’re spending any time outdoors between now and winter, you still need to protect your skin from those deep penetrating UVA and UVB rays. The good news is you can get your sun guard on by noshing on nutritional supplements and fabulous foods that can beef up your body’s own natural sun protection factor—and most of them are found right in the produce aisle of your supermarket. The National Cancer Institute estimates that up to 50 percent of Americans who reach their mid-60s will have skin cancer at least once and an overdose of the sun’s brilliance is mainly to blame. You’ve seen those leather-skinned senior sun worshippers at the pool and beach, right? Fast forward yourself 30-plus years, sun goddess, after skimping on the sunscreen without a high-enough SPF or building your bod’s own natural defenses, and

that’s you, girlfriend. While UVA rays give you that nice, golden bronze color, they also dig deeper to break down the skin’s collagen and elasticity that keep it soft and smooth. UVB rays are responsible for that salmon-pink burn, which stirs up the free radicals in your body and can lead to skin cancer. So build up your sun shield now from the inside out with this colorful array of yummy summer foods. Chances are you’re already eating some of them, but didn’t realize they also pack a powerful sun-blocking protection punch. Most anything red, orange, yellow or green contain antioxidants that fight off damaging free radicals. Tomatoes, bell peppers and carrots to name just a few. These foods are rich in lycopene and beta-carotene, which have been shown to help reduce skin’s sensitivity and irritation to sunlight, especially if you’re on medication. It also helps reduce your reaction to sunburn. Pink and orange citrus fruits are high on the SPF-building list, too. Munch on the melons! Cantaloupe is especially slurpy good and rich in vitamins A and C, beta-carotenes and

other antioxidants. Slice up the watermelons and casabas, as long as they’re in season, then look for deep orange pumpkins and colorful squash in early fall; all rich in beta-carotenes. Greens—both leafy and cruciferous—are packed with antioxidants and cancer-fighting agents. Veggies like dark, leafy spinach and kale help protect the skin, but herbs like rosemary, oregano and dill can deliver superhero defenses. In fact, oregano has 42 times more antioxidant activity than apples, 12 times more than oranges and four times more than blueberries! And crunchy greens like broccoli, cabbage and bok choy are known naturals at preventing many types of cancer, including skin and other organs. Summertime is tea time. And green and black tea lovers have a great advantage when it comes to sun exposure. Studies have shown that the polyphenol antioxidants in both leafy-born beverages inhibit cellular damage set off by time in the sun. It also boosts your immune system during time in the sun. Brew it fresh yourself, then pour it over ice and cool off knowing you’re a step ahead in the SPF game. And there’s nothing fishy about the benefit of omega-3 fatty acids—found in shellfish and other fatty fish like salmon—they fight off skin inflammation and thwarting cell damage from too much time in the sun. Omega-3s are also known to protect against non-melanoma types of skin can-

cers, which are less deadly but more common. If you’re not a fish eater, you can always add fish oil supplements to your vitamin regimen. They even make them in the “burp-free” capsule, if you’re really squeamish. Definitely the most sinful eat of the SPF list: dark chocolate. The flavonoids found in this decadent power booster are known to improve the skin’s ability to protect against some types of damage like sunburn. Flavonoids have solar crimefighting compounds also found in fruits and vegetables. But don’t go crazy on the chocolate bars; six full servings a day might help protect that exposed skin in your bikini, but only if you can still fit in it. Another great powerful UV blocker is grape seed extract. Its antioxidant benefit is 50 times greater than vitamin E and 20 times more than vitamin C. It also brags of antiinflammatory and anti-mutagenic properties, which can mess up your cells from overdosing on the sun. This skin-loving extract has been shown to rebuild the collagen and elastin in your skin from premature aging caused by sun exposure. So keep eating your SPF superfoods and supplements right on through the summer, and you’ll welcome the chance to be outdoors on a super sunny day because you’ve loaded up your beautiful body on powerful, natural UV protection. 5 lvwomanmagazine.com | 67

Sexy Mind for a

Sexy Body By Elle Swan

How to Elevate Your Sex Appeal

B

eing sexy is a mindset that can actually get better with age. The biggest mistake a woman can make is believing that sex appeal expires as the clock ticks. Nothing can be further from the truth. It’s a misconception to think that showing more skin will get you more attention from the opposite sex. For example, think of a half-dressed woman is in the same room with another who is fully clothed. Possessing an elevated mindset makes the second woman appear sexier and more attractive because of how she carries herself. Her allure and mystic exudes from what she is not physically revealing. How can I be so certain? Aside from the fact that I lecture and teach the art of inner beauty to thousands of women around the world each year, I personally spent my 20s with an unsexy, obese figure. Today at age 42, I am in the best shape of my life mentally, physically and sexually. I transformed my mind, body and spirit in the same manner that I coach my clients to elevate theirs—from the inside out. Many women focus on only half of the equation. It is immaterial how much nipping, snipping and tucking is performed on the

body. If the heart, mind and soul are neglected, a woman will never truly feel sexy or confident at any age. There is no biological reason why a woman should give up on herself based on a calendar. Changing the face of plastic surgery By Lisa Ferguson

D

r. Orna Fisher discovered her life’s calling in the midst of an untraditional tattooing session. As a medical student fulfilling a plastic surgery rotation at the University of Southern California, she was given the task with guiding an ink-filled tattoo needle over the reconstructed breast of a cancer patient to create a new, aesthetically pleasing nipple for the woman. “It was amazing to me. Just finishing that phase (of reconstruction) made the biggest difference (to the patient, who was) amazed as well,” Fisher recalled. “A lot of times it’s just finishing that last phase that makes somebody realize the (cancer) process is over. She was very emotional seeing that.” Fisher was so moved that she changed her specialty from ear, nose and throat (ENT or otolaryngology) to plastic surgery. After undergoing years of state-of-the art training, last year she opened The Fisher Center for Aesthetic & Reconstructive Sur-

gery, located at 5380 S. Rainbow Blvd., Suite 210, Las Vegas. According to the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners, Fisher is one of only six female plastic surgeons in Southern Nevada (this includes 2 women currently in residency). A board-certified general surgeon, she finished her residency at the University of Nevada School of Medicine before completing a plastic surgery fellowship at Oregon Health & Science University. “I really diversified my education by doing every phase of it at a different institution. I thought it was really important to see what other places were doing,” she said. Fisher’s love of medicine began during childhood. “My mom was a scientist and I was always with her in the lab, and I got a lot of exposure to the sciences.” She became particularly interested in biology and anatomy. “When I was little, doctors used to make house calls, so I thought that was really cool.”

“When somebody tells you that they’ve waited 20 years to be able to save up for enough money to have this surgery, that they’ve never done a single thing for themselves and you’ve helped make their dream come true, that is amazing.”

lvwomanmagazine.com | 73

In her early days as a medical student, Fisher began “scrubbing in” on cases alongside a physician/mentor who was an ear, nose and throat specialist. Fisher was so confident that ENT would become her specialty that she had already conducted medical research and presented information at a national industry meeting. Then came that fateful plastic surgery rotation at USC. “There was definitely some overlap between plastic surgery and ENT in terms of the anatomy. So when I got that rotation it was perfect, I thought.” “Actually, what ended up happening was within three weeks I completely changed my mind (about the direction of her career path),” she explained. “I equate it to falling in love versus falling out of love. You can’t control it—it’s just something that happens.” Fisher went on to complete plastic surgery rotations at several medical institutions, including Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles where she said she learned about “the diversity of people you can affect as a plastic surgeon.” “You can affect kids from the time they’re babies, all the way to elderly people,” she said. “You can work on any body part, and you can just do aesthetic things where you’re improving somebody’s appearance. Or, you can completely reconstruct something to take abnormal and try to restore it to normal.” Plastic surgery, she contends, “is a continuum. You have things that are, purely reconstructive surgery, for example where somebody is (involved) in a trauma, or somebody has a birth defect. And then you have the superultra cosmetic, where you’re taking really attractive people who are absolutely within the range of normal and they just want to be super-normal.” While Fisher does service reconstructive surgery patients at her practice, most of her business consists of aesthetic cases. The “mommy makeover” procedure she offers has proven popular with women whose child bearing days are behind them. “I always say you’re never too old for a mommy makeover,” quips Fisher, herself the mother 74 | lvwomanmagazine.com

of a young child. The doctor says the procedure is among her favorite to perform. The makeover usually entails a combination of surgeries to the breasts (possibly in the form of a lift, augmentation or reduction) and abdomen, including what’s commonly called a tummy tuck. Also, quite a bit of liposuction may be involved in the process. Mommy makeover patients—and their reasons for requesting the procedure—run the gamut, Fisher explained. “Sometimes it’s the day they know they’re done having kids,” she says. “If they’re older, in their 40s or 50s, sometimes they will say, ‘OK, I have basically financed my last kid and I’m ready to do something for me now.’” While “Mommy Makeover” results are often favorable, Fisher counsels patients to set realistic expectation levels for their body’s appearance after the surgery. “There’s a saying that you have to rob Peter to pay Paul because you can’t get something for nothing.” With cosmetic surgery procedures, she says, “You’re trading in sagging skin and a poor shape for scars. “For most people the tradeoff is well worth it because they hate their shape, the amount of sagging skin they have, the extra fat in certain places that they can’t get rid of their stretch marks. I have to try to shape the tissues and try to give them the best scar that I possibly can.”

She works similarly with women who seek breast augmentations. In Las Vegas, Fisher says, the size of breast implants requested by many patients is typically larger than in other parts of the country. Despite the fact that breast augmentation surgery has become commonplace, “You really have to educate (patients) about the risks involved,” she explained. “It is a real surgery with a real surgeon performing the operation. There is a risk in everything—bleeding, scarring, and potential emergencies. It’s a big deal.” The same goes for patients who consult with Fisher after losing a large amount of weight (either through diet and exercise or via bariatric surgery) in hopes of removing the resulting excess skin. “For people who’ve lost a hundred or more pounds … that skin takes a major hit and it stretches beyond repair. It has, a lot of times, no capacity to come back at all,” she says. “Even in the best of hands, getting the contour that you would for somebody to be on the cover of a magazine or in a beauty pageant is not going to happen. It is going to improve, and sometimes it improves dramatically, but just managing those expectations and making sure that you’re on the same page as the person coming in to see you (as a patient), sometimes it’s really hard.” While it is “impossible to achieve somebody’s ideal image of perfection,” she said, “if their expectations are realistic to where they understand it’s about reaching a certain goal for them within their own body and their own skin and under their own circumstances, those people can have dramatic results.” Meanwhile, Fisher also keeps abreast of the latest advances in “non-invasive, non-surgical modalities of facial rejuvenation,” such as Botox for wrinkles, soft tissue fillers and special skincare options. “People are demanding more of that,” she said. “They don’t want as much down time from work or from taking care of their families” as is typically required to recover from traditional surgical procedures. Interestingly enough, some patients have pointed to Fisher’s own full lips as the type of plump pout they wish to possess. “It’s amazing to me because when I was growing up, (plump) lips were not in,” she said. “I got made fun of for these lips, and now I have people asking me, ‘Have you done this to your lips? I want yours.’” No matter what type of procedure she performs, “My ultimate goal is to help (patients) make their own personal goal happen,” Fisher said. “When somebody tells you that they’ve waited 20 years to be able to save up for enough money to have this surgery, that they’ve never done a single thing for themselves and you’ve helped make their dream come true, that is amazing.” 5

Dr. Said T. Daneshmand Helping to fulfill dreams … one family at a time

D

r. Said T. Daneshmand is one of the two doctors operating The Fertility Center of Las Vegas, known around the world as one of the most successful fertility centers, and has spent more than a decade helping his patients also become parents because of his own family. He and his wife have three daughters ranging in age from 6 to 11 years and he understands the blessings that these daughters have brought to not only he and his wife, but also the rest of his family, especially grandparents. That feeling is what motivates him. “And all the joy that children bring to the parents and to the entire family; that is also a source of inspiration for me because that is what I want for my patients. I want them to experience the same thing I am experiencing and that I’ve been blessed with,” he said.

“I have a patient now whose husband has to work (during their appointments) and her mother is going to come in with her, which is wonderful because she is longing for a grandchild and my patient is longing for a child. And when she gets pregnant, there are going to be many, many people who are going to be very happy.” Dr. Daneshmand’s calling to become a fertility specialist came in college while on routine rotation in the obstetrics department. He met a fertility specialist who left a mark not only on the heart of her patients, but also Dr. Daneshmand. “The interactions she had with her patients and the joy and happiness she brought to those couples when they found out they were having children was just, to me, the most incredible connection you can have with a patient.” Dr. Daneshmand explained how she held her patients’ hands as they went through the process and he recalled how she inspired him with the impact he can have on a patient’s dream of having a family. “I felt like that was the most incredible calling for me. As a medical student, I wanted to become a fertility specialist (because of her).” Valedictorian of his medical school class, Dr. Daneshmand chose to complete his residency at University of California, Los Angeles because he believed “that institution was going to give me the best training to become a fertility specialist in the future.” The Fertility Center of Las Vegas prides itself not only on its cutting-edge and award-winning research and treatments, but also on their bedside manner. “This is a very human field and the way we treat patients and the amount of time we spend with patients is critical. We want to spend as much time with patients that we need,” Dr. Daneshmand said. Dr. Daneshmand prides himself in being available for his patients through phone calls and emails. On a normal day, Dr. Daneshmand arrives at the office between 6:30 to 7 a.m. and doesn’t typically leave until 7 p.m., but it is the energy of giving a patient positive news that inspires him every day. It would seem that someone who works long hours and spends so much time with patients wouldn’t need say that he wants to work harder, but that is just what happens when he helps a patient reach their goal of becoming pregnant and having a family. It’s that feeling of success and accomplishment that motivates him to work harder to advance the field of infertility. One patient of his experienced four miscarriages before becoming pregnant with twins. Dr. Daneshmand describes his relationship with this patient as “a journey. It’s not something that happens overnight. It takes months and months to prepare a patient.” Their journey doesn’t end with a successful pregnancy and birth of a baby. The Fertility Center of Las Vegas celebrates with an annual birthday party held each fall. “These are people mostly families who’ve had pregnancies through our center. We want to continue our ties with our patients mostly because we consider them family. We are doing research and advancing the field of infertility, but we are also taking care of patients in a way that is very nurturing and in a way that patients should be treated with great care and compassion.”

His family understands that the amount of time daddy spends at work is significant. Every year, he brings his daughters to The Fertility Center’s annual birthday party so they can experience what he does for themselves. “They see the all of the kids and the line of parents waiting to give me and Dr. Shapiro a hug, then they realize what I do every day. They realize that when daddy is at work on a Saturday and doesn’t come home until the afternoon that gives them an understanding of what I do every day at work. They’ve come to understand it may be a bit too well, Dr. Daneshmand explained. “For a while, my little one thought that the only way a couple could get pregnant was to see someone like daddy. And of course we had the birds and bees talk as she got older.” The father of three sets aside specific time to spend with each child, doing the things that the child enjoys. Whether it is a piano store or a pet store, it’s about just spending quality time with that child, stressing that the time is valuable. “Yes, I do work long hours but I also set aside specific time to spend just with my family. That time is sacred and that time is special. I don’t let anything interrupt that. If a friend of mine calls me, I let it go to voicemail because that is the time I want to spend with my kids. I want to be completely attentive to them, and I don’t want them to ever grow up thinking that daddy wasn’t attentive to us or didn’t spend quality time with them.” The doctor in role of father shares advice, “Care for your children, love them but also part of that care and love is being attentive to their needs. We have to listen to our children and sit down and spend quality time with them.” For more information on gestational surrogacy and other fertility treatments, please contact The Fertility Center of Las Vegas. 8851 W. The of Dental Implants

All Bright Coming Disk 7-22-12

Bonnie Huler had an accident as a young child and lost several of her upper front baby teeth. Unfortunately, the accident also prevented her second set from coming in as well. She went without replacements of any kind until she was about 13 when she got her first partial. “I was thrilled just to have something that looked like teeth,” says Bonnie. “Since then I’ve replaced that partial several times. It seems they last about ten to twelve years before they eventually break or no longer fit. I was at that point again when I found Dr. Mohtashami of All Bright Dental. “His approach was completely different; it involved an implant secured permanent denture (All-OnFour), for my upper arch, and a single implant with a combination of porcelain crowns and veneers for my lower arch. He explained his treatment plan in great detail, backed it up with beautiful photos of similar cases he had done and said he could give me this gorgeous smile in just a few visits! I was all in. “As you can see my smile makeover has turned out beautiful. I get complements nearly every day. I love it. I’ve been telling all my friends how wonderful this office is. The team is sweet and kind, the office is very comfortable, and Dr. Mohtashami is the best. He’s kind, gentle and very talented. I’ll never go anywhere else again.”

Saeid Mohtashami, DDS Hometown: Orange County, Ca Occupation: Cosmetic & Implant Dentist

All Bright Dental 7510 W. Sahara Ave. Las Vegas, NV 89117 702.220.6666 allbrightsmile.com

Southern California native, Dr. Saeid Mohtashami traveled east to Las Vegas with a simple mission—to put “a smile on people’s faces.” Now a Vegas resident for over 10 years, the patients of All Bright Dental are now dazzling the city streets with pearly white grins. The cosmetics dentist came upon his calling when doing volunteer work at a hospital’s internal dental department. Providing oral health care to medically compromised children inspired enthusiasm for dentistry and its comprehensive benefits. In Orange County, Calif., Dr. Mohtashami received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at the University of California, Irvine and completed his Doctor of Dental Surgery at the School of Dentistry at the University of Southern California. He received further specialty training at the renowned Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, where he learned the art and science of cosmetic, reconstructive and neuromuscular dentistry. “A good healthy body comes from a good healthy mouth,” Dr. Mohtashami advised. The cosmetics dentist considers healthy gums to be the foundation to good oral health and helps patients make the connection between dental care and their overall health. He explained that internal medical problems can sometimes be directly derived from dental issues. According to Dr. Mohtashami, approximately 150 million Americans are missing an average of 10 to 15 teeth. Possible causes include anxiety or dental phobias preventing patients from visiting their dentist or a lack of access to proper dental care over several years. He shares that many patients tend to ignore what they don’t see or when they don’t feel any pain, thus leaving potential dental problems untreated. Now, with 15 years of experience and thousands of tooth restorations, the dentist has found his niche. Specializing in implant dentistry, Dr. Mohtashami has placed hundreds of dental implants at All Bright Dental. He personally performs the entire procedure from start to finish for each of his patients. His extensive cosmetic and restoration training has become a tremendous asset when placing dental implants. He is able to assess how the implant will effectively fit into a patient’s overall smile. It is with great pride that the dentist uses only actual client photos on his website and promotional materials for his dental practice. According to Dr. Mohtashami, one of the most important medical advances greatly aiding his practice has been the development of IV sedation. IV sedation gently and temporarily puts patients to sleep to allow his team to perform implants and other major dental surgeries. Patients awake in comfort with the procedure finished and have little, if any, memory of the treatment; a winwin for the client and the dentist. When at home, Dr. Mohtashami puts a smile on the faces of his three daughters, ages 4 months and 7 and 10 years old, both as a dad and their coach in soccer. The dentist also enjoys reading and traveling in his free time.

r. Mark Doubrava calls Milwaukee his hometown, but has been living in Las Vegas since he was 10 years old. While attending the sixth grade, he knew he wanted to become a physician and follow in his father’s footsteps. Before receiving his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Dr. Doubrava attended Carleton College in Minnesota. He completed a one-year internship at Baylor College of Medicine in Texas, followed by a four-year ophthalmology residency at Louisiana State University Eye Center and a one-year fellowship in cornea and refractive surgery in New Orleans. Dr. Doubrava said, “During medical school, I realized the importance of our sense of vision and became interested in the diagnosis and treatment of eyesight disorders.” The doctor is drawn to the microsurgical aspect of ophthalmology and working with the delicate tissue of the eye. In 1997, he and his wife moved back to Las Vegas where he founded his solo practice, Eye Care for Nevada. According to Dr. Doubrava, ophthalmology is a very important aspect of health care for all ages, whether it is a basic pair of eyeglasses to help children or adults correct their vision or performing complex corneal transplant surgery to restore vision to a blind eye. At his clinic, Dr. Doubrava treats eye disorders such as cataracts, glaucoma, diabetes and macular degeneration. He educates his patients about their eye condition and what they can do to protect and preserve their vision as they get older. His advice includes to never smoke (or quit if you do), wear eye protection while working with tools or chemicals and wear sunglasses while outdoors. Commenting on advances in the field of ophthalmology, Dr. Doubrava said that new high technology intraocular lens implants used in cataract surgery can help patients to see both close and far distances with much less dependency on eyeglasses. He stated, “Performing cataract surgery and the laser eye surgery, Lasik, are both very rewarding because of the dramatic improvement of vision and the positive impact on patients’ lives.” Dr. Doubrava has a strong interest in improving the higher education system and was recently elected to the board of regents of the Nevada System of Higher Education. The system governs the public universities and colleges of Nevada including the University of Nevada in Las Vegas and Reno, Nevada State College, Desert Research Institute, College of Southern Nevada, Truckee Meadows, Western Nevada and Great Basin College.

wo unfortunate incidents during his youth would lead Dr. Ryan Mitchell into a successful career in cosmetic plastic surgery. At age 7, he suffered a broken jaw after falling off of his bicycle. Although his jaw was wired shut for six weeks, his oral surgeon’s care and compassion left an impact on the young patient. Later, at age 10, Dr. Mitchell was attacked by a Doberman pinscher and required numerous stitches for three separate facial wounds. Despite these adverse experiences, his treating doctors had a positive influence on the youth and left a lasting impression. Those incidents, accompanied by his caring disposition and artistic quality, made choosing medicine and plastic surgery a natural choice for Dr. Mitchell. Board certified in facial plastic surgery, Dr. Mitchell received a Bachelor of Science at Michigan State University. He earned an osteopathic medical degree from Des Moines University, then completed his general surgery internship and otholaryngology and facial plastic surgery residency at Pontiac Ostepathic Hospital. There, Dr. Mitchell trained extensively in facial plastic and Spine Inst of NV Dr Perry, Take cosmetic surgery and breast and body sculpting. The cosmetic surgeon moved to Las Vegas in 2003 and has devoted his practice to helping patients achieve an appearance that is both youthful and natural. He explains that it is a gratifying experience for an artist to sculpt tissue, “I am an artist and the human body is the ultimate challenge as a media.” He seeks to make patients happier about how they define themselves. “I improve people’s self confidence by changing how they look on the outside, which makes them feel better about themselves on the inside.” These surgeries can range from correcting prominent ears on a child to proportioning a nose with a patient’s face. Dr. Mitchell advises his patients “let the buyer beware.” He warns that many surgeons in the field of cosmetic medicine promise surgery-like results without the surgery. He counsels patients to research cosmetic procedures and to have reasonable expectations about the results by asking their doctor for photos of previous patient outcomes. Speaking on the latest in cosmetic plastic surgery, Dr. Mitchell says, “Evolving techniques emerge as a natural desire to advance upon the teachings of our predecessors.” In aesthetic surgical procedures, the aim is for patient safety and consistent, long-lasting results. As a result, many procedures are becoming less invasive such as endoscopic techniques that use small incisions for faster and less painful recoveries. In 2003, Dr. Mitchell was the first cosmetic surgeon to introduce the “no-scar” trans-umbilical breast augmentation to the state of Nevada. In a suitable patient, he says, the procedure is a better choice over other breast augmentation incision placements. Another advance is a dermal filler called Artefill, currently the only FDA-approved permanent filler available in the United States.

rowing up in Russia, Dr. Jeannie Khavkin studied music since the age of 5 with the intention of becoming a concert pianist. She always felt a dual attraction to the arts and sciences, but realized she would find greater fulfillment in a career with the potential to make a difference in people’s lives. Both her mother and grandmother had been physicians. As a child, Dr. Khavkin witnessed the immense gratitude her mother, a neonatal critical care specialist, received from the parents of her young patients. Her mother’s career inspired Dr. Khavkin to follow in her footsteps and become a doctor. After medical school, Dr. Khavkin completed her residency in otolaryngology—head and neck surgery at the prestigious Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary. She trained under the leading experts in the field of facial plastic surgery, which motivated her to advance in her specialty and complete fellowship training in rhinoplasty, facial rejuvenation and complex facial reconstructive surgery at the University of Toronto. Dr. Khavkin said, “I really enjoy a unique blend of form and function offered by the field of facial plastic surgery. It resonates with my artistic side and a desire to help people achieve functional and aesthetic results that will improve the quality of their lives.” Her practice, Khavkin Facial Plastic Surgery, opened in 2010. She focuses exclusively on the face, head and neck, specializing in surgical and nonsurgical functional and aesthetic procedures such as rhinoplasty, facial and eyelid rejuvenation surgery, Botox and injectable fillers as well as reconstructive facial surgery. As a facial plastic surgeon, she believes in the importance of taking care of one’s skin as well as maintaining good nutrition. “As the old adage goes, an ounce of prevention is worth the pound of cure and sunscreen is the best anti-aging ingredient,” advised Dr. Khavkin. She shared that nonsurgical and minimally invasive facial rejuvenation procedures are becoming more popular in the field of facial plastic surgery. Procedures that use patient’s own fat for restoring facial contour and volume as well as growth factors derived from the patient’s own blood appeal to many as a more natural way to look more youthful. According to Dr. Khavkin, Nevada residents have a significantly higher rate of skin cancer than the national average and so she frequently performs facial reconstruction on patients after the removal of skin cancer. The facial plastic surgeon promotes skin health in the community by attending health fairs and writing for local health magazines. Dr. Khavkin serves as vice president of the board and donates her services to benefit Smiles for Survivors, a nonprofit foundation that provides preventative and restorative dental care for breast cancer patients. This year’s annual fundraising event to raise awareness of the impact of cancer on oral health will be held Oct. 27. Outside of work, Dr. Khavkin enjoys traveling, reading, cooking, but most of all spending time with her family including her husband, Yevgeniy Khavkin, who is a neurosurgeon in Las Vegas specializing in minimally invasive treatments of spine disorders, their young son and their frequently misbehaving dog.

n Europe, Dr. Rim Marcinkus was a cardiac surgeon, as are his father and brother. After a while, Terri Janison he aspired to take a different path with more creativity. The field of plastic surgery greatly appealed to him and he became one of the first plastic surgeons in his country, Lithuania. Dr. Marcinkus received his Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Science (the highest degree of in Europe) in Surgery and doctoral degree in scientific research at Vilnius University in Lithuania. He then completed his residency and fellowships in plastic and reconstructive surgery in Las Vegas, Michigan and Los Angeles for U.S. licensing. He regularly attends conferences for several different associations to stay abreast of current changes and education in the field. “I enjoy making people feel beautiful from the inside out,” said the plastic surgeon, “If it bothers you, fix it.” He advised that patients should not be afraid to consult with an educated surgeon about plastic surgery. Additionally, he said, “Las Vegas, in my opinion, is looking for a new innovative and educated surgeon to bring, not only general plastic surgery, but a European approach for a natural look.” The plastic surgeon has specializes in breast enhancement procedures, body sculpting, Eurolift midfacelift, which is a mid-facelift under local anesthesia with little or no downtime, and hair transplantation. He also has a special interest in nonsurgical techniques for facial and body rejuvenation. He stated, “Many nonsurgical treatments from the newest technology are performed with lasers, and are remarkably going hand-in-hand with what I can do surgically.” Using such procedures for nonsurgical plastic surgery leaves the patient with excellent results and minimal maintenance. At Desert Plastic Surgery Center, Dr. Marcinkus boasts his practice as the “Home of the Eurolift.” Other specialized procedures include FDA-approved silicone “gummy bear” implants, saline implants, ultrasonic liposuction and full-body lifts after weight loss surgery. He also offers nonsurgical skin tightening, dermal fillers and Botox. Inpatient procedures are performed at his in-office surgical suite, allowing the surgeon to attend to his patients’ needs throughout their treatment. His passion for the field carries on beyond the office. Dr. Marcinkus has authored multiple articles in experimental and clinical surgery journals in addition to two medical manuscripts. He also holds one registered patent and is a member of the American Medical Association, American College of Surgeons and numerous other Annie Aniello European medical societies. Outside of the office, Dr. Marcinkus likes to spend time with his family. Both of his children are aspiring to be doctors; his daughter is entering into premedical school and his son, who is beginning college, would also like to be a plastic surgeon. He frequently travels to Europe to visit family and attend events that honor the hospital where his father was chief of staff. He likes contributing to any charity helping children.

father of three, Dr. Said Daneshmand proclaims “It lights a fire inside of me to help my patients achieve the same joy of having their family.” Dr. Daneshmand, whose brother is also a doctor, grew up with a strong sense of family. Today, his work at The Fertility Center of Las Vegas is vital to helping couples have children of their own. It all started at the University of California, Los Angeles where Dr. Daneshmand researched the effect of female age on ovarian reserve and assisted in the development of a blood test to determine the quality of eggs in the ovaries. In 1999, Dr. Daneshmand was recruited by Dr. Bruce Shapiro to join The Fertility Center. His research and fellowship training at UCLA Medical Center were integral in establishing the first egg freezing program in Las Vegas. The collaboration helped develop in vitro fertilization protocols to vastly improve pregnancy rates including post thaw extended culture, one of the most successful IVF regimens currently available. Dr. Daneshmand finds gratification in “being part of the process of the journey of making a family.” He truly enjoys being an active participant in the process and advises patients to be conscious of what they put in and how they treat their bodies. The doctors also help needy families in the community with donations of clothing, money and books raised at their annual Fun Faire, a celebration of their past and present patients. At home, Dr. Daneshmand’s daughters inspire his involvement in East Valley Family Services and Safe Kids. He is also an avid swimmer, competitive tennis player, guitarist and a Lakers fan.

s a child, Dr. Orna Fisher was fascinated by her family doctor’s ability to make people feel better during house calls. Although she considered becoming a scientist like her mother, her love of health, science and nature led to a medical career. “I was not one of those kids who considered mind-blowing careers like an astronaut, president, fireman or race car driver. I simply knew that I would be a doctor,” she said. During her freshman year in college, she excelled in a gross anatomy class and became a teaching assistant for the course, typically a graduate-level position and a title she maintained throughout her college career. In hindsight, Dr. Fisher believes the experience contributed to her decision to become a surgeon. At the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, Dr. Fisher was exposed to plastic surgery and ultimately developed an interest in breast reconstruction, pediatric plastic surgery and burn surgery. She completed a six-year residency in general surgery at the University Of Nevada School Of Medicine followed by two years of subspecialty training in plastic surgery at the Oregon Health and Science University. In 2011, Dr. Fisher opened The Fisher Center and sees a variety of patients for surgeries from major reconstructive challenges to cosmetic makeovers. “For some patients the goal may be to improve confidence, and for others it may be to achieve a sense of normalcy. Either way, it’s an improvement in the quality of life,” Dr. Fisher said. For facial rejuvenations, Dr. Fisher performs surgery on the eyes or nose to make the face appear brighter and more youthful or injects dermal fillers such as Botox, Restylane or Juvéderm to fill wrinkles and smooth skin. She also offers breast and tummy procedures that reposition the body parts called “mommy makeovers” including liposuction, tummy tuck, breast augmentation, breast lift or breast reduction. Her ultimate goal is to help make women feel confident with their body, especially after childbirth. Dr. Fisher explained, “Plastic surgery is real surgery. Understanding what you are getting into with respect to the possible complications and recovery time is key along with a realistic understanding of what is achievable and what (plastic surgery can’t fix).” She suggested that patients who have an interest but are not yet prepared for facial rejuvenation should try something temporary and non-invasive. Above all, Dr. Fisher advised that good skin care and good nutrition are the foundation for beauty at all ages. The clinic carries a line of skin care products containing vitamin C and retinol and advises patients to apply and reapply sunscreen daily. According to the surgeon, face transplantation is an advancement that is revolutionizing the area of plastic surgery. Additionally, research in stem cell technology has great potential for cosmetic and reconstructive applications, already changing the way some of her procedures are performed. Outside of work, Dr. Fisher is a wife and mother who loves to spend time with her family and enjoys gardening, cooking, exercising, traveling and learning.

r. Judith Ford was initially discouraged from entering the medical field by her father, an anesthesiologist at Mercy Harvard Hospital. While studying biology at Boston College, she realized becoming a doctor was the “perfect marriage of a biology degree and people skills.” Dr. Ford completed medical school at the University of Connecticut, followed by her internal medicine residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Board certified in internal adult medicine, the doctor enjoys the continuity of care and getting to know her patients’ medical histories. Her interest is in preventative medicine and, most recently, the newest method of testing cholesterol levels by particle size. Her advice: Be the first patient in the morning or after lunch to guarantee a timely appointment and be prepared with questions and medications. Bringing a friend to the appointment may help remind patients to make necessary inquiries. Dr. Ford, mother to two daughters, 5 and 7, recently ran her first half-marathon.

r. Doug Sanchez was born in Germany but raised in Southern Oregon, and Southern California. Growing up in Oregon he developed his love for the outdoors. After high school, Dr. Sanchez followed his family’s tradition and once worked as a heavy equipment mechanic for the United States Marine Corps and then as a railroad machinist. After years working in machinery, he changed tracks to pursue a more fulfilling career. While working during the day, he attended dental school at night before enrolling full time at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Dr. Sanchez began his dual major in biology and business at colleges in California and Utah before acceptance into UNLV for his Doctor of Dental Medicine. He currently pursues post-graduate studies on dental implants, cosmetic dentistry and orthodontics through nationwide continuing education. He broadens his repertoire to “be able to give the patient what they want without the limitations of a narrow focus.” After dental school, Dr. Sanchez worked as an associate with a dentist in Kingman, Ariz. who mentored him and fueled his interest in dental implants. He went on to become a managing dentist for a large dental corporation. He later decided to exit the corporate world and enter private practice. He stated, “I felt that having my own practice would give me the flexibility needed to never miss a second of my daughter’s life.” In 2009, Dr. Sanchez opened Infinity Dental in Las Vegas. His work in dentistry helps patients overcome disabilities for lasting, life-altering results: “We can take a patient who was previously unable to function normally and help them to chew and enjoy meals the way the rest of the world does. We take for granted how lucky we are to be able to go to a dinner or party and not have to worry about our teeth coming out. This has a major social impact on patients.” The philosophy of his practice is “the possibilities are endless” because treatments to get patients on the right track when it comes to their dental health are viable with today’s technology. He stated that recent advances have made it feasible for implants to be integrated into the body, thus improving the overall quality of life for his patients. Additionally, Infinity Dental will soon begin using laser procedures capable of minimizing recovery time. As a UNLV alum, Dr. Sanchez finds it rewarding to give back to the community. The dentist teaches weekly at the School of Dental Medicine and enjoys being a mentor to new dentists. Infinity Dental volunteers annually with Give Kids a Smile, hosted at UNLV. Dr. Sanchez’s admiration for the troops motivates his work with Iraq Star Foundation, an organization aiding wounded veterans. He also helps ensure military officers are service-ready and then normalized upon their return. Additionally, the practice volunteers services for Celebrate Recovery, a program sponsored by the Central Christian Church. After a long day at work, Dr. Sanchez can always count on his 9-year-old daughter Emily to put a smile on his face. He cherishes the time spent together with his family going to the lake, wakeboarding, snowboarding, riding choppers and taking annual trips to Laughlin River Run.

couple of trips to the emergency room as a kid sealed Dr. Thomas Parisi’s fate forever. As a child, Dr. Parisi played sports and had to visit the hospital on several occasions. He remembered the hospital staff as being cool, calm and collected, creating an atmosphere which he admired. Dr. Parisi completed 16 years of schooling and training to become a part of the medical field. He received his Bachelor of Science in Biology at Widener University, earned his Master of Science in Microbiology from Thomas Jefferson University and a post-graduate degree from St. Christopher’s College of Medicine in Cambridge, England. He attended the University of Saint Eustatius School of Medicine in the Netherlands for his doctorate in medicine. He completed a three-year residency at the University of Nevada, Reno followed by a fellowship with the American College of Physicians, which required an additional three years. The physician became board certified in 2005 and has been practicing at Las Vegas Vein since being opened in 2007. Additionally, he is a practicing physician at the Desert Springs Hospital Wound Care Center. Las Vegas Vein is dedicated to the treatment of leg disease, limb rehabilitation and vein care. Patients suffering from restless legs, swelling, unexplained pain and tenderness are healed using techniques that incorporate proper wound healing. The clinic offers inpatient and outpatient wound care, wound consultations, hyperbaric and undersea medicine. One advice he offers is to wear compression. “It will slow down the progression of chronic venous insufficiency, which leads to leg pain, swelling and cramping.” After 16 years of medical schooling, Dr. Parisi is one of the most experienced Venefit Procedure Specialists in Las Vegas. He really enjoys seeing the results of his work. “It is very rewarding to see one’s patients getting stronger, healthier and happier.” Not only is he a physician but Dr. Parisi is also a Venefit Procedure Instructor. In this capacity, he has been able to use a smaller three-centimeter probe in place of the typical seven-centimeter probe. The shorter probe allows him to treat veins he would not have been able to work on before. The physician is also a member of the American College of Phlebology, Society of Vascular Medicine, Society of Vascular Ultrasound, Society of Limb Salvage and Functional Reconstruction and the American College of Physicians. Hanging in his office are paintings created by Dr. Parisi or his father. Along with artistic painting, the physician is a fan of ice hockey and ice skating. However, “It is the time with my family that I cherish the most,” Dr. Parisi stated.

he secret to younger looking skin is stimulating the production of our own fibroblasts to produce more collagen in the skin. How is that done, you ask? Certainly not with surgery as that only stretches our old, thin, sun damaged skin even thinner, providing a smooth but odd appearance to the skin. With the right combination of resurfacing and skin tightening lasers in the right hands, the skin actually becomes biologically younger, smoother and more elastic. Working with laser companies and other laser physicians, Dr. Mall has contributed to the development of protocols to maximize energy delivery and optimize the results of laser treatments without sacrificing patient safety. The three targeted area, superficial, middle, and deep layers of the skin, need specific wavelength lasers to best treat each layer. Combining lasers from two trusted and renowned laser companies, Cutera and Alma, allows for optimal results for each patient. Sun damaged brown spots, wrinkles, fine lines and cellulite are no problem for Dr. Mall and his state of the art lasers. Being a results-driven laser center, New Image Advanced Laser Skin Center is dedicated to not only providing superior results but also to the comfort of patients undergoing treatment. A combination of strong topical anesthetics and some mildly sedating medication minimize any discomfort from the procedure. Most laser treatments result in little to no down time or aftercare, aside from mandatory use of sunscreen. Dr. Mall at New Image has delivered nonsurgical laser skin rejuvenation with excellent results for the last six years, now with the next generation of treatments with platelet rich plasma. Dr. Mall discloses that PRP use in cosmetics is producing phenomenal results, especially when used in various resurfacing regiments including PRP injections in combination with micro needling. Dr. Mall and his excellently trained staff provide complimentary comprehensive consultations that are custom tailored to each patient’s needs, wants and budget. Although Dr. Mall spends much of his time working, he does find time to exercise and take in the latest movie to relax.

or Dr. Al Simoncelli, a bad car accident led to good fortune. While attending college as a design engineer student, he was involved in a rear-end collision. Suffering a rear impact at 65 miles per hour, his fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae were left fractured. Although doctors said he would experience pain indefinitely, a co-worker would be the one to heal him. Dr. Simoncelli admits his co-worker’s suggestion to visit a chiropractor was a novel idea to him in 1979. She offered him a chiropractic book explaining how bodily mechanics are associated with the nervous system. Dr. Simoncelli found a passionate doctor who was able to alleviate back pain and even headaches prior to the accident shortly after his chiropractic treatments. His experience led to a revelation, prompting the design student to switch gears. He attended a premed program at Bloomfield College and graduated Mt from Cleveland Chiropractic College in 1988. West In 1991, Dr. Simoncelli founded Mountain West Chiropractic in Las Vegas during aChiro booming economy. His rehabilitation facility treats patients for a broad range of ailments, including scoliosis and personal and sports injuries. “You can put all the oil you want into a bent hinge, but it will not improve the hinge until you unbend it,” says Dr. Simoncelli. He feels improving bad postures is the key to a healthy back. The chiropractor truly enjoys the challenge of adjusting postures and enhancing patient health, citing that reported improvements in sleep patterns or mobility are signs that the body is beginning to heal. Following a unique structure-based approach for chiropractic treatments, Dr. Simoncelli believes that “improved function always follows improved form.” The practice focuses on improving and correcting abnormal postures to reduce any onset problems and to achieve greater, long-term results. Utilizing the “mix fix set” protocol that emphasizes chiropractic exercises and neuromuscular reeducation to first, increase flexibility of the spine; second, make corrections; and third, strengthen areas around the corrections. Since scoliosis in young children can often be left undetected; Dr. Simoncelli suggests a simple home test to check for possible indications. While the child is leaning forward and touching their toes, check their back and rib cage for any abnormalities such as a twisted torso. In 2011, Dr. Simoncelli was awarded Standard Treating Doctor Status by the prestigious Clear Scoliosis Institute for his cutting edge approach to reducing scoliosis without the use of braces or surgery. A family man, he and his wife Sheryl have two boys, 14 and 19, and one girl, 12. Dr. Simoncelli is also an avid cyclist and dirt bike rider. He also enjoys reading current literature and research on nutrition, fitness and public health issues.

urf ’s up, dude! Dr. Darren Soong, originally from Honolulu, always wanted to be one with the ocean. But a career in marine biology didn’t appeal to him when he realized he might be living in a Volkswagen van as part of his work environment. Although he admits that marine biologists are better surfers than doctors, he found that becoming a surgeon was much more rewarding. Dr. Soong was among the first class to graduate with a kinesiology degree in sports medicine from the University of California, Los Angeles. During a rotation in medical school at the University of Hawaii, he discovered his niche in performing surgery. He moved to Las Vegas in 1990 to complete his surgical residency at University SpineMedical Center. Formerly a trauma surgeon at UMC, Dr. Soong has Inst in bariatric surgery for weight loss at Desert specialized Springsof Hospital over the past six years. He takes pride in changing NV patients’ lives for the better. According to Dr. Soong, the results are particularly satisfying when – overweight patients no longer need diabetes previously or cholesterol Dr medication. Aside from advantageous medicalPerry benefits and added longevity, Dr. Soong is pleased to see patients regain energy to participate in physical activities such as Zumba, Pilates, swimming and running. Weight loss surgery needs serious consideration before it is performed, counsels Dr. Soong. He stresses that such procedures act as a tool to assist in losing weight by helping patients experience less hunger, eat smaller quantities and still feel satisfied after a meal. The doctor promotes a healthy lifestyle to ensure surgery is successful, including proper food choices and increased exercise and physical activity. To encourage healthy living, Desert Springs Hospital sponsors a team of patients in the annual Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series. There are various types of weight loss surgeries. Over the years, procedures have improved with small to microscopic incisions and shorter recovery times, opening the door for more people to undergo weight loss surgery. Dominant for some time, gastric bypass was eventually replaced by the safer, less invasive laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, commonly known as lap band. According to Dr. Soong, the most popular surgery today is laparoscopic, or vertical sleeve gastrectomy. Approximately 85 percent of his patients have requested the procedure, which bridges the gap between gastric bypass surgery and the Lap-Band. It is no doubt that a doctor from Hawaii would love surfing the big waves. In fact, the love of sports runs in his family. Both he and his wife rode dirt bikes and Motocross before having their twin daughters. Now, the couple competes in tennis tournaments and continues to surf and paddleboard. Their 9-year-olds play volleyball, soccer and will soon join mom and dad on surfboards.

ecoming a doctor runs in the family for Dr. Vasana Cheanvechai. Both of her parents are physicians who motivated her to choose a medical career. Dr. Cheanvechai realized how her parents’ strong bonds with their patients can become rewarding and wanted to achieve the same in her career choice. Before medical school, Dr. Cheanvechai studied history and European cultural studies as an undergraduate at Princeton University. She considered various fields including investment banking, journalism and theater. Her exploration eventually led her back to the field of medicine. After attending medical school at Northwestern University, she completed a general surgery residency at the University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital. This was followed by an additional year of research in vascular surgery and a two-year fellowship in vascular and endovascular surgery at the University of Maryland, where she also obtained her master’s degree in public health. To her patients, Dr. Cheanvechai is known simply as “Dr. C.” The vascular surgeon admits, “I enjoy making a difference in someone’s life—making them feel better, helping them to lead healthier lives.” At her practice, she is a solo practitioner who focuses on blood circulation in the arteries and veins. She wants patients to be aware of preventative measures that can be taken toward their circulation health. For example, Dr. Cheanvechai states “Quitting smoking is one of the best things one can do for their vascular health.” Smoking habits along with diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol are among the worst risk factors for artherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. As for venous disease, she advises wearing compression stockings for those who spend a significant amount of time on their feet to help treat symptoms and bulging varicose veins. The latest technological advancements in the area of endovascular treatments for venous disease have vastly improved treatment techniques and recovery time, according to Dr. Cheanvechai. Patients with symptomatic venous insufficiency experience painful varicose veins, venous ulcers (open sores) and tired, swollen legs. In the past, patients would undergo open surgical vein stripping under anesthesia, which included a hospital stay and left patients with much discomfort. Today, endovenous laser therapy or radiofrequency ablation can be performed within 15 minutes in the office, often allowing patients to return to their usual daily activities that same day. After the quick and painless treatment, protruding veins will likely disappear with no further treatment and compression stockings will no longer be required to relieve symptoms. When she isn’t treating patients, Dr. Cheanvechai enjoys spending time with her family and friends.

r. Regan Holdridge’s medical philosophy centers on the power of patient education. When meeting with her patients, the doctor takes care to identify and explain all standard of care and clinical research study treatment options in order to empower patients to make the best decisions to fit their individual medical needs. “Being an oncologist allows me to have a complete patient-physician relationship and to be involved in their care on every level, including helping them to cope with their diagnoses, and navigating through the highs and lows and managing the physical components of their diseases. As their physician, I am with them every step of the way,” Dr. Holdridge said. For almost four years, the medical oncologist has been practicing at the Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada, treating patients with hematology or oncology concerns. She is one of the few physicians in Southern Nevada who are board certified in both hematology and medical oncology. Her primary focus is to provide comprehensive, thorough and evidence-based health care for her patients, with a particular interest in the areas of breast, lung and colon cancer and lymphoma and survivor care. Dr. Holdridge earned her post-baccalaureate degree and began premedical training at Columbia University in New York City. Later after studying at the College of Medicine at the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vt., she earned her Doctor of Medicine, board certification in hematology and oncology and board certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine. It was there that Dr. Holdridge received the coveted David M. Tormey Award for her perseverance in the pursuit of medical education. The Fletcher Allen Health Care serves as Vermont’s academic and university medical center in alliance with the College of Medicine and the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at the University of Vermont. Here, Dr. Holdridge completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine, a three-year clinical fellowship of hematology and oncology and served as chief fellow of hematology and oncology. During this time, she also took on the role of clinical instructor for the department of medicine, where she was a member of a hematology and oncology fellow education and a cancer committee. An involved member of the medical community, Dr. Holdridge has held a number of positions. She is an associate member for both the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology, served as chief oncologist for Southern Hills Hospital Division and was elected chairman of St. Rose San Martin Cancer Committee. She currently serves as adjunct assistant professor of Internal Medicine for the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Touro University Nevada in Henderson, Nev. Born in California, Dr. Holdridge was raised in a northern Vermont town where the dairy cows outnumbered the 2,000 residents. Since moving to Las Vegas, she has discovered a real love for the desert and the southwest. Dr. Holdridge is married and has two daughters. Her hobbies include photography, hiking, traveling to the beach and baking with her daughters.

BE SMART. BE SAFE. BE SEEN. Fact: Nevada is one of the five most dangerous states for pedestrians. Recent painful events in Las Vegas have reminded us of this repeatedly. Through your emails and calls, you’ve told us you are concerned and are tired of pedestrians, especially our children, dying and being injured on our roadways. Action News wants to change that. IF YOU ARE DRIVING: Pay attention! Respect pedestrians. Slow down near crosswalks. Pedestrians do have the right of way in crosswalks and at intersections. IF YOU ARE A PEDESTRIAN: Pay attention! Look both ways before crossing. Always stay focused on the traffic while you are in the intersection. Don’t assume all cars will stop for you. Wear bright clothing. Don’t wear dark clothing at night. For the rules of the road regarding pedestrians and driving, go to KTNV.COM.

ealth is a very important subject, both individually and to our community as a whole. Without good health, our lives are affected in every aspect. As we spotlight the medical community, our Fearless Females are making a difference. One Fearless Female is a Doctor of Chiropractic who has changed careers to treat children with an innovative, new program. Another Fearless Female is a dental hygienist who founded a nonprofit organization to serve at-risk children in the Clark County School District. Inspiration is one word to describe our Fearless Female who battled a debilitating medical condition and preserved despite drastic physical changes. Las Vegas Woman magazine honors these women for their achievements. Stories by Debbie Hall Photos by Connie Palen

Terri Chandler Helping to put a bright and healthy smile on each child’s face Females Fearless

L

ongtime Las Vegas resident Terri Chandler, RDH, knows the value of a smile and wants to take care of dental hygiene for every child, regardless of his or her circumstance. She’s the founder and executive director of Future Smiles, a nonprofit foundation that provides public health dental hygienists with portable dental equipment to serve at-risk children in the Clark County School District. Chandler began her career in dentistry at the age of 19 and said that to this day still enjoys clinical care, patient contact and being an advocate for health. In 1999 she graduated from dental hygiene school and began her career in private practice. Chandler was then offered a position with the Nevada State Health Division’s Oral Health Program as the Statewide Oral Health Coalition Coordinator and later the Statewide Sealant Coordinator. “For the eight years that I served with the NSHD-OHP, I found that both roles gave me a unique knowledge base into public health and program management. Through those years, I learned of the oral health crisis in Nevada, where 7 in 10 children experience tooth decay by the third grade. Oral disease is five times more common than asthma and in an at-risk population, access to an oral health professional is a challenge due to costs and travel,” Chandler said. “In 2011 the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reported that only 31 percent of Nevada Medicaid enrolled children received preventive dental services, emphasizing that many at-risk children are simply shut out of the system and suffer needlessly in silence.” In 2009, Chandler was offered the opportunity to set up a dental hygiene-based oral health program at the Cunningham Schoolbased Health Center spearheaded by Communities In Schools. Chandler made the decision to resign from private practice and devote 100 percent of her time to creating Future Smiles. “Some of our sites are internal to the school, like a classroom, and only serve the immediate school population. However three of our sites are in separate structures and are open to the community to serve any needy child. Because of this broad range availability, we have served children from more than 105 schools in Clark County. We have a team of 10 public health dental hygienists who hold a specialty license for Public Health Dental Hygiene Endorsement by the Nevada State Board of Dental Examiners.” Chandler has been fortunate to have many mentors but her inspiration is her Hispanic grandmother, Cruz Fernandez. “(She) never attended high school, but she was the kindest and most profoundly wise person I have ever known. We called her Nana and she taught me to have a deep level of compassion for others by always helping with the gifts that the good Lord has given you. … Nana used to say, ‘Children come into this world like a blank sheet of paper, they only know who they are by the words that you put onto that paper, so choose your words wisely.’ That saying remains with me to this day since children are our future and it is up to each of us to make their lives better. … Nana passed away a few years ago and I still miss her deeply.” As for Chandler’s philosophy, “I once gave a presentation where I used the analogy, ‘Knowledge is like chocolate, it is meant to be savored and shared.’ How true that is. As a professional, we all need to work together to impact the lives of those we serve, to fully enjoy the opportunity to serve others, to understand and appreciate what we have learned, and more importantly, to share our knowledge with our colleagues making each of us a better professional.” It is her devotion and dedication that makes her a Fearless Female. 5 lvwomanmagazine.com | 107

Dr.Susan DeVito Changing children’s lives with innovative ideas Females Fearless

D

r. Susan DeVito, executive director of Brain Balance of Henderson, has always had a love of serving families and changing lives, which led to her first career choice of Doctor of Chiropractic with emphasis on pediatrics. During her private practice in New York from 1988-2003, she cared for children with learning challenges. After selling her practice and moving to Nevada in 2004, she became a motivational speaker, business and life coach. “I had the pleasure of traveling internationally; educating and inspiring other health care providers to empower their patients toward true wellness and understanding of how the nervous system works,” she said. While contemplating another career change in 2010, her friend Dr. Anthony Pusateri recommended she read “Disconnected Kids” by Dr. Robert Melillo. “I was halfway through the book when I knew this was my next calling,” DeVito explained. “With my awareness that ADHD is now the largest childhood epidemic in the world, I knew I had to do something about it right here in Southern Nevada. “Dr. Robert Melillo, the creator of our program, is where I receive my most current inspiration. The manner in which he went about putting the pieces of this puzzle together and was determined to solve the learning challenges of children and families amazes me,” she said. “As a mentor, I have always taken young people under my wing to provide them a window into the field in which I work. At present I have a high school and college student volunteering at Brain Balance since they are both interested in children with developmental disorders and are contemplating careers within a similar field.” According to Dr. DeVito, Brain Balance (with 54 locations nationwide) will be the No. 1 leading resource for children with developmental disorders in the near future. She believes the program has the potential to reverse the current trend of increasing number of children diagnosed with a spectrum disorder like ADD, ADHD, autism, Asperger’s syndrome, dyslexia and Tourette’s syndrome. The program is based on neuroplasticity and epigenetics and it is drug free. Dr. DeVito is also inspired by Robin Sharma, Tony Robbins and Zig Ziglar “for their keen ability to help people focus their mind and take action as well as put life and things in perspective. Mother Theresa inspires me with heart and soul and being a citizen of the world. “Although I am not personally associated with any one charity, I do support many. Recently I attended a Boys and Girls Club event, The Jewish Federations of Las Vegas Women’s Philanthropy as well as a private fundraiser for a child. I look forward to doing more of this in the future. I’m anxious to get involved with the Dave Rice Foundation and the Lili Claire Foundation.” As for any woman wanting to enter the field, Dr. DeVito has one answer. “Go for it if your desire comes from wanting to change the world one child at a time.” Wonderful advice from a Fearless Female who truly desires to help children of Southern Nevada. 5 On the second Tuesday of each month from 6-7 p.m., Dr. DeVito offers free parent lectures about the program. Educators may tour the Henderson center during open houses held from 2:30-4:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month. For more information, call 702.778.9500 or go to brainbalancehenderson.com.

Marteen Moore Physical challenges will never stop her creativity Females Fearless

M

arteen Moore, owner of Marteen Moore Interior Design, grew up surrounded by French culture, art and athletics. Born and raised in Southern California, her French maternal grandmother helped to raise the family of seven and every summer Moore would vacation with her grandmother in France; developing a love for architecture and design. As a child, she was always active, learning to swim before age 3 and participating in dance, gymnastics, snow skiing, water skiing, hiking, and tennis. “In college I would run from three to 10 miles a day,” she said. “I started doing triathlons and marathons, and a series of smaller races. The biggest race I ever participated in was a half Ironman including a one-mile swim, 64-mile bike ride and 10-mile run. I lifted weights, did Pilates and yoga.” Moore envisioned her destiny as an artist and attended Stephens College in Missouri. After graduation, her father (founder and owner of the Fisher Space Pen) moved his business to Boulder City, Nev. and Moore followed to work with him on different projects while continuing her art career. Eventually, Moore returned to school to study design and open her own design firm in 1988. She also got married and started a family. “I specialize in large custom homes from the ground up; working with the client and architect to make sure each room is optimized to the client’s needs and desires.” She has worked with celebrities including Robert DeNiro while he was shooting the movie “Casino” and the MTV reality show, “Real World Las Vegas.” Everything changed for Moore in 2000 when she began to experience loss of control over her legs. Her doctors began testing for a diagnosis but were unable to find the cause. On September 11, 2001, she woke up unable to move. After more testing, the diagnosis was a tumor on her thoracic vertebrae and emergency surgery was performed. Although benign, it took Moore about one year to recover with 90 percent use of her legs returning. While she could work, lift weights, swim and walk fast; she had to quit running and biking. In 2006, the tumor returned. After three more operations, Moore returned home to spend time with her dying father and young children. “I grew sicker and sicker and now was on IV antibiotics. My spine started to fall off the metal I had from my lower back to the middle of my chest. I found an excellent surgeon in Santa Monica, Calif. who said he could save my life but probably not my legs. I had no choice. My children were still young and I was a single mother, so I went for it,” she said. “I had to have three more surgeries, and was able to walk until the last one. I was then paralyzed from my chest down with metal from my neck to my tailbone.” While she was in rehabilitation, Reggie Bennett, the director of the nonprofit organization R.A.G.E (Rebuilding All Goals Efficiently), and a female mentor, who uses a wheelchair, reached out to Moore and helped her to learn to live independently, continue working and maintain a workout regimen. “They helped me to understand that a spinal cord injury is not a death sentence. They helped me modify my house and learn to drive so I could be independent. I joined their team by volunteering on the board of directors, mentoring and giving support to newly spinal cord injured patients. When possible, I help with fundraising. It is a wonderful organization that does a lot of good in this community.” Moore’s advice for everyone is, “Follow your heart and dreams. Don’t let anything get you down and always believe in yourself and your vision.” Moore lives this philosophy everyday as a Fearless Female. 5 lvwomanmagazine.com | 109

Alex Morgan

This preteen demonstrates a giving spirit Story by Debbie Hall

orn in Fuling, Peoples Republic of China in the Sichuan Province (where pandas are known to habitate), Alex Morgan began her life in an orphanage. At 11 months old, she was adopted by her two American mothers, Dr. Charlotte Morgan and Julie Liebo, and first lived in Minnesota. In 2004, the family moved to Las Vegas. “I don’t remember anything about China, but I know why I love pandas,” Alex Morgan said. “My family is very special to me. I have two moms and an older sister. I have one cat, three dogs and two fish. I couldn’t live without them.” Even though she just celebrated her 12th birthday, Alex Morgan has been an active member of the community for much of her life. Since 2008, she has collected soda pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House Charities while raising awareness on how the tabs help ill children. Alex Morgan has spent time during the holidays at a skilled nursing facility, handing out holiday gifts, assisting with serving meals, and helping with Santa photos of residents and their families. She also started a fresh smoothie program at an assisted living facility. Alex Morgan has worked

for the past four years with a local food pantry where she collected hygiene items such as toothpaste, soap and combs. At her young age, Alex Morgan realized that if people did not have enough food, they would also not have money to buy other things as well. Alex Morgan has definite ideas about wanting fairness in the world. She aspires to be a movie director and create movies that are reality based and, as she said, “with a twist!” Alex Morgan is currently working with a professional director and creator of an anti-bullying video where she would appear on camera. Mayor Goodman has expressed interest in distributing this video in the school district. She has written a book called, “A Star’s Wish,” about what stars in the sky would wish. Alex Morgan is also a member of the National Junior Honor Society and was selected by her teachers for two awards: top select choir member and top student of her grade. But Alex Morgan is still a kid and looks up to her big sister Ande. “She truly helps me in life. When I fall, she picks me up. She is shy and I am outgoing. She taught me to be outgoing even if she would al-

ways be shy. Even though she teaches me everything I know, she also taught me to not be shy like her, but to be communicative. I want to inspire others just like she inspired me.” Alex Morgan makes time to have fun and enjoy her age. “My favorite things to do are swim, play Connect Four, go on the computer, draw on my white board, play with my dogs, ride my bike, go to the park and a whole lot of other things. It is so fun, especially when I have someone to share the awesome moments.” “It’s not hard to help the world,” she said. “Give back to the world because so many people take. Everyone can fix that. If it is only helping someone hold the door, then that is one step closer. My saying is, ‘To be inspired, inspire someone else.’ Help your neighbor and they will help you back. “I also believe that somewhere inside of everyone there is something about them that is awesome. I did a Facebook event and asked all my friends to invite their friends and we all told someone they were awesome at the same time one Sunday which I called Awesome Day.” How awesome is it for Las Vegas that Alex Morgan is Future Fearless Female. 5 lvwomanmagazine.com | 110

Mars vs. Venus Overcoming selfishness for abundant relationships By Rev. Thabiti

A

t first, most of us experience the magical power of attraction in our biggest relationships. There is an initial thrill, emotional gravity and adventure of starting again with a brand new person who is nothing like the previous mistake. New relationships often begin with such promise and potential that in many cases seems outright indestructible. Then, as Life would have it, perceptions start changing as more and more truth (hidden beneath the make-up or façade) keeps coming to the surface. As this happens, we begin to see shortcomings and imperfections in the other person. As a result of noticing flaws in our once blossoming romance, if the relationship does not work out, it is common belief that the other person now has to be made wrong in some way or perceived to be defective. The main reason why relationships don’t work out (aside from betrayal, violence or sexual abuse) is because someone in the relationship decided to make it more about themselves. This type of selfishness simply means that “what matters to me is more important than what matters to you.” It means that someone is not behaving the way we expect or want him or her to—instead of allowing or accepting them for being who they are in reality. If we continue approaching relationships on the basis of what we think we will get from the other person and, if what we want does not happen, then we will continue to end up unhappy in relationships. When the average person is unhappy in a relationship, it has to be the other person’s fault, right? A better approach towards getting into relationships would be to ask “how may I serve you?’ instead of “what’s in it for me?” By understanding that everyone is doing the best they can, given their situation, background experience, education, beliefs or lack of understanding makes it easier for us to stop making others wrong. Beneath our surface level differences, we are all the same, meaning that if you were the other person (walking in their shoes), you would be exactly the same way they are. We all must grow to accept Life for all that it is and all that it is not. There is but one I am expressing itself through everybody. From I am male to I am female, from I am black to I am white and from I am Democrat to I am Republican—it is still the same I am. We must allow the truth to be itself, knowing that it is the evolutionary impulse of the ever-expanding good. The fundamental purpose of the truth is to unshackle us from erroneous beliefs that obstruct our ability to enjoy the gift of life today. We often say that we want the truth and then get disappointed or angry every time the truth isn’t what we want it to be. The truth does not exist to conform to us—we must conform to the truth. When we learn to love what we get, then we will always get what we love. If a relationship fails, remember the higher or Spiritual truth behind everything that says “I will either give you who you want or someone better.”
