race Jenny Grabel was born on May 1, 2015 (5/1/15) at 5 p.m. on the dot. We had decided her name to be Grace long before she was born. While in the hospital, we received a Facebook message that said to Google the meaning of 5. We did just that, and what we found gave me chills. The meaning of 5 symbolizes “grace.”

My husband, Seth Grabel, and I had challenges conceiving. We knew that likelihood of getting pregnant was less then 5 percent and decided to seek infertility help. We tell our story of hope on page 92. It’s been a long journey to motherhood. Many tears, worried thoughts and prayers have paved the way to be able to hold Grace in my arms today. As a working mother, my days are long and exhausting and yet they go by so fast that Grace is literally growing up before my eyes. Fortunately, we have a nursery at our publishing office and I am with Grace 24/7, checking e-mails, nursing, publishing, nursing, phone calls and more nursing. This takes a lot of energy and determination, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Like life, you have to do what works best for you. Just like the women featured in this issue, they have the determination to accomplish greatness for our community. The women featured in each issue of

Las Vegas Woman magazine are shaping our neighborhoods, the same neighborhoods that Grace will be growing up in. Having Grace has ignited a sense of passion that transcends through our magazine. I am proud to say that I was born and raised in Las Vegas. It’s important that all children, including Grace, can say the same thing. We will continue to do our part and create a positive resource for our community, highlighting the local heroes among us. As always, thank you for your support through readership. Picking up Las Vegas Woman gives our local businesses a place to advertise. In turn, thank you to our advertisers for their contribution for it is with their support that we are able to publish articles that educate, entertain and inspire. Finally, I would like to thank my loving husband. In three short years, we have been become a family of three with the most precious gift in our lives, Grace. To educate, entertain & inspire,

Tammy Grabel

Letter from the

EDITOR

What a year it has been so far. Grace Grabel came into our lives, and I must admit I am a little envious of all of her adventures so far. Grace loves people and is very comfortable as a worldly citizen. The experience Grace’s parents, Tammy and Seth Grabel, had with The Fertility Center of Las Vegas is an inspiring story. I am also amazed at the incredible technological advances made by our Southern Nevada medical community, spotlighted in our Doctors of the Desert issue. The physicians are excited by the innovations and techniques they can offer their patients in Southern Nevada. As one doctor said: “It is an exciting time to be in medicine.”

It is fall, the weather is cooler, and it is a great time to play outside whether it is the Red Rock Canyon or a staycation in Goodsprings. The best news is that Southern Nevada continues to grow and prosper. I am thrilled to see the economy rebounding, hope returning and a new spirit thriving in the community. Las Vegas Woman magazine is thrilled to be a part of this wonderful place we call home.

Carol-Lyn Liddle Sarah Lowe

W

ith such great entertainment on the Las Vegas Strip, one can get caught up in the spectacle of the singing, dancing, magic and humor that can be found in shows. But, on stage are real women living real lives, following their career paths as performers and raising a family while doing some juggling. Nightly, Carol-Lyn Liddle belts out classic rock songs in “Raiding the Rock Vault” at The New Tropicana Las Vegas. As a mother, Liddle has cheered on her daughter, Veronica Rothenhausler, an MMA featherweight fighter who has recently retired from the sport. Liddle always wanted to be a singer. However, when she became a mother at age 24, she put her singing aspirations on hold to become a stay-at-home mom. After her daughter graduated from high school, she decided that she still wanted to sing. When “Raiding the Rock Vault”

was searching for a female singer to add to its lineup, Liddle was asked to sing Heart’s classic anthem “Alone” in front of Heart guitarist and Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame inductee Howard Leese as part of her audition. “I told Howard before I started that I had never sang a Heart song before, and he had the most stunned look on his face,” said Liddle. “He asked if I could hit the high notes. I did, and he was smiling from ear to ear.” She got the job and has been performing with the show ever since. Sarah Lowe was born into musical theater and continues with her career as dance captain in the Las Vegas production of “Jersey Boys,” the Broadway musical about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons at Paris Las Vegas. Lowe is also the mother of two sons. Along with being the dance captain, Lowe is the swing—meaning she covers all the other female roles when needed. “I go on when someone is sick, injured or has a vacation,” Lowe explained. “As

dance captain, I know all of the routines of the show, so I know all of the male roles as well. Being the mother of a 20-month-old toddler and an infant while working nights, Lowe said, “When you are doing what you love, you have to remind yourself of how fortunate you are. It can be stressful, but I have a great support system. My husband brings the baby, so I can nurse him during breaks in the show and I always have my pump.” Sarah Emick also performs nightly in “Jersey Boys” as several characters during the show with her featured role as Lorraine, a reporter who was also a love interest of Valli. She is also a mom to a 22-month old son. “There are benefits and drawbacks to my schedule,” Emick said. “I do get to spend my days with him. I focus on him when he is not napping. PICASSO: CREATURES AND CREATIVITY On Exhibition at Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art

Picasso origina l, never shown in public, is on exhibit through Jan. 10, 2016

A

long with a thriving local art scene, Las Vegas is the place to see famous artists and their works that transcend time and place. “Picasso: Creatures and Creativity” is on exhibit at Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art, featuring an original portrait that has never been shown in public before. The exhibition will be open to the public through Jan. 10, 2016.

18

W oman M aga zine .V egas | FALL 2015

The piece, “Profile of a Woman with Blue Hair” (Nov. 1, 1938), features Dora Maar, one of Picasso’s partners. The portrait represents the eccentric and dramatic relationship between the couple using a dark palette, distorted eyes, sharp angles and straight lines. When the exhibit closes, it will return to the Picasso family estate. Pablo Picasso is considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Living in two centuries (19th and 20th), he is credited for being part of the invention of constructed sculpture, the collage and the Cubist movement where objects are reassembled in an abstracted, three-dimensional form. He was most influential in emphasizing drawing and, while using color as an expressive element, was not known to incorporate subtleties. Picasso was a painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet and playwright who created an estimated 50,000 artworks until his death in 1973. This includes an estimated 1,885 paintings, 1,228 sculptures, 2,880 ceramics, 12,000 drawings and thousands of prints, tapestries and rugs. The exhibition will focus on the artist’s fascination with the human figure, showcasing 43 original works that have never been displayed together. Curated by Tatyana Franck, there are 40 paintings and prints, two linoleum blocks and one zinc plate. Three photographs taken by Picasso’s friend David Douglas Duncan showcase Picasso’s home (interior) in the south of France. The exhibition will showcase Picasso’s work from 1938 to 1962. “‘Picasso: Creatures & Creativity’ is a unique exhibit offering visitors the opportunity to dive into the mind and life of Picasso,” said Tarissa Tiberti, executive director of the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art. “Additionally, guests will be enveloped by the insatiable curiosity and artistic vision of one of history’s most intriguing and iconic artists.” Created during his post-World War II period, “Woman with

a Yellow Necklace” (1946) intersects the portrait of Picasso’s partner Françoise Gilot with transposed geometry. “Reclining Woman Reading, (1952)” displays his creativity using negative space. The lithographic “Two Nude Women” (1945) captures two women who were very important to Picasso during his lifetime. He would spend 10 years with Gilot, a painter whom Picasso met when he was 61 and she was 21. Photographer Maar, who was 28 when she met 54-yearold Picasso, would also be with him for a decade. Women overlapped in Picasso’s life as they did in his art, and he did a series of lithographs of both women examining their personal growth, changing appearance and how they fit into his life. Among exhibition highlights is what many consider to be one of his masterpieces, “Woman with a Chignon and a Yellow Hat” (1962).Considered a key work in Picasso’s late period,

the painting depicts his second wife, Jacqueline Roque. The head, face and nose resemble Roque, and the penetrating eyes are Picasso’s. He would create over 400 portraits of her, more than any of the other women he was involved with or his first wife. She was 26 years old and he was 70 when they met. They married two years later, after the death of his first wife. Roque was with Picasso when he died and would commit suicide in 1986. “Picasso: Creatures and Creativity” is on exhibit through Jan. 10, 2016. Located in Bellagio Resort & Casino, Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art presents exhibitions of artworks and objects from internationally acclaimed museums and private collections. BGFA is open daily 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Last admissions are sold 30 minutes prior to closing. Guests also may enjoy complimentary daily docent tours at 2 p.m. For more information, call 702.693.7871 or visit bellagio. com/attractions/gallery-of-fineart.aspx.

WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP COUNCIL Helping Young Women Succeed

T

hey come from two different worlds, but Alyssa Mayor and Megan Thompson have one distinct commonality. Both were in need of help to attend college and received the United Way Women’s Leadership Council Emerging Leadership Award for Women. Mayor was born in Quezon City, Philippines and moved to Las Vegas in the summer of 2004. There are many career options in Mayor’s horizon, and she definitely has a bright future. With a humble spirit and a love for helping people and animals, Mayor confessed that she had no idea why she received the award. “My life was given multiple surprises, first being told that I had an interview for this scholarship, then a congratulation of actually receiving it,” said Mayor.

For Mayor, the award means more than just a vehicle to attend college; she has been accepted into a sisterhood of women leaders and given an opportunity to engage with them in fun volunteer opportunities like creating tutus for the WLCsponsored Girls on the Run 5K event. 22

W oman M aga zine .V egas | FALL 2015

“This award is so important to me because I am surrounded by people who never stop changing the world for the better, and I strive to become like them,” said Mayor. Thompson competes in pageants in her spare time and has aspirations of competing as Miss USA. She created her own program to empower girls to be stronger from within, “so they can learn their own value and make good choices when it really counts,” said Thompson. Appointed to the Nevada Youth Legislature for the 2013-15 sessions, Thompson is actively engaged in the community. “This award helps financially fund my opportunity to acquire a college education so that I can use my degree and my career as the catalyst to do bigger and better things for my community and my country,” explained Thompson. Last year’s award recipients, Monica Guiza and Leslie Miranda, have transformed lives because of the support of the WLC. Miranda balances a full schedule of college at University of Nevada, Las Vegas with community service and

recently signed on as a United Way AmeriCorps VISTA member. Serving with the Community Engagement Team, she helps engage high schoolers in volunteering and making a difference through the NGAGE program. “I chose to serve as an AmeriCorps VISTA with United Way because I wanted to give back to an organization that has done so much for me,” said Miranda. For Guiza, her first year of college has been a successful one. She made it to the Dean’s Honor List for both semesters and was able to get her first job. “Paying for college can be a huge burden,” said Guiza. “Thanks to the WLC Emerging Leadership Award for Women, attending college and achieving my goals of becoming a teacher have become less stressful and more exciting.” To learn more about how to become a WLC member or the Emerging Leadership Award for Women, contact Lawrel K. CARNEVINO: A Grand Steakhouse EXECUTIVE CHEF NICOLE BRISSON GIVES IT A WOMAN’S TOUCH

C

elebrity chef Mario Batali and restaurateur Joe Bastianich opened Carnevino, a steakhouse that merges the bold with the traditional in its menu, décor and presentation for a fine dining experience. The steak Carnevino is known for combines a blend of organic and super-prime beef prepared by Executive Chef Nicole Brisson. Dry-aged, then rubbed with sea salt, black pepper and fresh rosemary, this is heaven for meat lovers. Raised on a working farm in upstate New York, Brisson began her culinary career at age 14, working in her grandfather’s restaurant in Saratoga, New York. Her father had a dream to be a farmer, and her mother grew up in the restaurant business. Brisson continued her culinary education in high school, becoming a Vocational Industrial Clubs of America leader and president as well as participating in a number of culinary competitions. Brisson graduated from Johnson & Wales University and moved to Italy after turning 21. “I moved not speaking the language and worked in a kitchen with the staff speaking almost 10 different languages including Chinese, Moroccan, Lebanese, American English and Italian. I learned visually and really got more of a culinary education,” she said. She also studied with food writers Molly O’Neill and Faith Willinger, developing a love for local produce and cured meats of both the United States and Italy. Under Chefs Steven Kalt and Paul Bartolotta, Brisson opened Wynn Las Vegas. She then served as chef di cucina at OTTO for three years before she was appointed executive chef at Carnevino. According to Brisson, there are more female executive chefs in New York and California than in Las Vegas. While she admits to some minor problems with other venues, “with this company, it doesn’t matter whether you are male or female. It depends on how you do the job and if you are a

hard worker. I feel like I am really part of the team.”

eliminated (“chopped”) after this round.

She also believes that women have a different style of managing a kitchen. “I think this comes from our nature as women—being nurturers, wanting to multitask and getting organized. I think this can create a good environment if handled correctly.”

Carnevino’s menu features beef tasting including Carne Cruda, Tagliatelle Bolognese, BBL Dry-Aged Ribeye, Dry Aged New York Carpaccio and Veal Tongue in Brodo. Carnevino also offers organic veal, Colorado lamb, Heritage Foods pork, handmade pastas, classic antipasti and side dishes inspired by the street food of Naples. A full drink menu and desserts compliment the fine dining experience along with the exquisite décor and outstanding service.

Brisson also competed on the very popular Food Network’s “Chopped” in 2012. Her first basket included a pig’s head, fava beans, strawberries and Roquefort blue cheese, which she had to transform into an appetizer. She created a pig cheek salad with frisée, wine vinegar and olive oil. For the entrée, Brisson had to use pig organs, fiddlehead ferns, morel mushrooms and bourbon cream liqueur. She created a Norcino ragu with penne pasta, red onion and olive oil but was

FALL WINES FOR THE SEASON Fall is here with cooler temperatures and it is the perfect time to enjoy the great weather of Southern Nevada. Whether sitting on a patio deck enjoying a glass of wine or hosting a party for friends, these selections will enhance the season. Here are a few of my favorites for every budget.

e e L y n n e K ! s r e Che

J Vineyards Brut Rose This stunning sparkler will transition nicely from summer into fall with its gorgeous salmon color, lively bubbles and heady aromas of strawberries and rose petals. The palate offers a creamy texture with balanced acidity and a light, crisp finish. This is extremely foodfriendly and lovely as an aperitif.

William Hill North Coast Chardonnay This full-bodied chardonnay is the perfect wine for fall. Rich flavors of baked apple, brown spice, honeyed pear and toasted oak are reminiscent of a crisp autumn day in an apple orchard. Pair with roasted chicken, poached salmon with creamy dill sauce or pasta carbonara.

Columbia Winery Merlot I like to call this a “Cab Lover’s” Merlot! The wine is full-bodied with concentrated flavors of blackberry, morello cherries and a hint of cocoa powder with a plush mouth feel with firm tannins and a long, balanced finish. Enjoy with beef tenderloin, sausage pizza with zesty tomato sauce or roast turkey with stuffing.

Carnivor Cabernet Sauvignon As temperatures cool, there is nothing like a robust red to warm the soul. Carnivor Cab may be big and bold, but it’s incredibly smooth with flavors of dark berry fruit, chocolate-covered cherries and hints of roasted coffee beans. This plush and velvety wine will definitely stick to your ribs! Try with barbecued pulled pork sandwiches, grilled mushroom burgers or classic pot roast.

Ghost Pines Red Blend This intoxicating red blend offers aromas and flavors of blueberry jam, ripe plum and subtle notes of black pepper. The palate is dense and well-balanced with a long, silky finish. Ghost Pines red blend is always a crowd-pleaser, and it pairs well with a wide variety of foods including prime rib, pasta Bolognese or rack of lamb.

Allegrini Palazzo della Torre Made from 30 percent dried grapes in the Amarone method, this delicious red blend provides extra concentration and complexity with rich flavors of cherry, mocha, spice and toasted oak. Silky smooth on the palate with incredible structure and depth, pair with grilled steak, braised short ribs or hearty pasta. Salute!

THE NAPA RIVER INN AT THE HISTORIC NAPA MILL BY ANNIE SLIMAN

A LUXURIOUS HOTEL FOR THE QUINTESSENTIAL NAPA EXPERIENCE

O

ver the past year, I’ve had the great pleasure of visiting and writing about the beautiful Napa Valley as part of the series All Things are Good about Napa. Together, we’ve learned a little about many exceptional winemakers, grape growers, wineries and vineyard owners who live and work in the Napa Valley. I’ve also talked about some of the many outstanding people in the hospitality and entertainment industries. As we begin our second year, I’d like to introduce you to my very favorite place to stay, the Napa River Inn at the Historic Napa Mill. It’s become our Napa home away from home for many reasons. This lovely boutique hotel is charming, comfortable and convenient. It’s

34

located on the Napa River right in the downtown Riverfront District, so it’s a great place to begin and end the day exploring the valley. After eight stays, I’ve gotten to know it very well. Perhaps the most important factor in its excellence is that it’s locally owned and operated. I’ve learned that almost guarantees superior attention to detail and personal service. The Napa River Inn boasts an impressive history. Captain Albert Hall built the mill in 1884. He was a shipper and merchant who also used the mill for storing wines and stocking supplies for local vineyards. Today’s inn was actually erected inside the mill in the 1990s, with interior design inspiration from Sandra Blake, whose firm has a long resume of

important hotel and resort projects. Harry Price, the current owner and a major stakeholder in downtown Napa’s revitalization, is careful to preserve the inn’s legacy as he adds every luxurious amenity a modern traveler could desire. The room accommodations are simply first class. The linens, including plush terry robes, are soft and luxurious. I have to admit I’m a bit of a clean freak, and the housekeeping staff at the inn is absolutely up to my very high standards. The 66 unique guest rooms are spread among three diverse buildings, the Embarcadero, the Historic and the Plaza. Many are situated on the riverfront with views and balconies. All rooms include a personalized

California breakfast from Sweetie Pies Bakery delivered to your room each morning. Guests also enjoy a superb wine tasting every evening. There’s in-room gourmet coffee and tea, with water and cream in the mini-fridge. Complimentary newspapers are delivered every weekday, and for the electronically connected, free high-speed Wi-Fi, flat-screen televisions and two direct telephone lines keep everyone happy. One of the things I enjoy most is the lovely Napa Valley Spa bath products, which I think are the best I’ve encountered in any hotel. The spa itself is also first class, with a friendly and talented staff that makes the weariest traveler feel pampered and refreshed. The inn provides complimentary downtown transportation, and its concierge service is beyond knowledgeable and helpful. Best of all for animal lovers, the Napa River Inn is pet-friendly. With its premier location, the Napa River Inn is in easy walking distance of many boutiques, art galleries and restaurants, including over 20 wine-tasting rooms. It’s nestled between the

Napa General Store and local restaurants and bistros with an abundance of options for both dining and shopping. We make it a point to kick off our first day with lunch and wine tastings at Napa General. Other nearby highlights include Amelia’s Boutique, Sweets (a vintage sweet shop) and Angele Restaurant for country French fare. For Asian, American and Mediterranean choices, try Celadon. If you’re looking for nightlife, Silo’s in the mill features live music. Nearby also are City Winery and the Oxbow Market. Our group ate at Todd Humphries in the Oxbow Market on our last visit. All eight of us raved about the fantastic food and great experience. I mentioned the great concierge service at the Napa River Inn. Special thanks go to Laurie Gordon for her fantastic recommendations for tastings, dining and all-around places to visit. Clark County

WORKS HARD TO KEEP LAS VEGAS

‘Marriage Capital of the World’

L

as Vegas was (and still is) THE place for starry-eyed couples and celebrities Lynn Goya, Clark County Clerk to tie the knot, either in an intimate ceremony or a destination wedding with family and friends traveling to Southern Nevada. The locals loved getting married in Las Vegas as well with beautiful country clubs, the magnificence of the houses of worship and outdoor venues such as Mt. Charleston and Red Rock Canyon. People would travel from around the world to come to Las Vegas for their nuptials. It was part of the allure and glamour of the city, bringing in billions of dollars in revenue. Then something happened. It was very subtle and not even a blip on anyone’s radar. After a peak of 128,000 marriages performed in Clark County in 2004, the numbers started to drop. While the city still holds the highest nuptial numbers of any U.S. county, there has been a 37 percent drop since 2004, and newly elected Clark County Clerk Lynn Goya wants to reverse the trend and market the wedding industry. “Clark County issues about 80,000 marriage licenses a year. Of those licenses, about 82 percent are issued to tourists, with 75 percent of those for national and 25 percent for international couples. This is a very big business for the county, bringing in about $2 billion dollars

a year,” Goya explained. There are about 100 wedding chapels, but weddings and receptions also include other businesses including venues, photographers, videographers, limos, bridal dresses and tuxedos, caterers, DJs, florists and bakers. According to TheKnot.com, about 70 people come to Nevada for each wedding party. Along with the wedding and reception, guests pay for accommodations, food, beverages, shows, attractions and tours. “Even with the decline in marriages in the past 60 years, our wedding industry was booming for 50 of those years,” Goya said. She emphasizes that Las Vegas is still the best destination for weddings with its amenities and the fact that the city’s main industry is hospitality.

This is a very big business for the county, bringing in about $2 billion dollars a year “When I was running for office, I spoke with wedding vendors who were very concerned about the wedding market,” she said. After uncovering the numbers, Goya reached out to the Las Vegas Visitors and Convention Authority, Commission of Tourism, other agencies and vendors to work with them. “One can pick from a variety of weddings, including very elegant and traditional ceremonies to themed weddings. We are affordable as well, and we can still offer so much for everyone. With the recent Supreme Court ruling, we are also a great destination for samesex couples.”

The Clark County Commission also approved an increase in the marriage license fee from $60 to $77. The additional money will be used to promote weddings in Las Vegas to bring back business. The Clark County Clerk is the chief wedding officiant for the county, managing the marriage bureau and issuing all of the licenses for wedding officiants. The County Clerk’s Office also maintains official documents including County Commission and other county board meeting minutes, agendas, commission voting records and county contracts. A longtime resident of Clark County, Goya has a journalistic, public relations and nonprofit background, degrees in English and economics and has covered Las Vegas extensively for local, regional and national publications including USA Today, Audubon, Luxury Las Vegas and Nevada Magazine. She has been quoted as a Las Vegas expert in Bankrate.com, CBS Newswatch, CBS News, Travel Magazine and Dog Fancy. Goya encourages participation and can be reached at Lynn.Goya@clarkcounty.nv.gov. ennifer was a beautiful bride as she walked down the aisle to her groom Christopher at Siena Golf Club. It was the day they had been dreaming about, and because of Wish Upon A Wedding, memories of the wedding and reception will always be cherished by the couple, family and friends. Christopher had served in the United States Air Force for 22 years; his last position was combat rescue. Five years ago, while serving in Afghanistan, his helicopter was shot down, and he was one of two survivors of seven passengers. He incurred a number of injuries, and his left leg was amputated. Along with physical problems, Christopher also suffers from PTSD. Meeting a little over a year ago on Match. com, it was the last day of Jennifer’s membership on the site when Christopher emailed her. They met for lunch, and according to Jennifer, they have been together ever since their first date. After the couple’s engagement, they were selected by Wish Upon A Wedding. “It was such a blessing. Everyone was so wonderful and they gave us the most beautiful wedding and reception. Adam Fraiser (Wish Upon a Wedding representative) and Bri, our wedding coordinator, are amazing. 58

y Akitas adore each other. However, they don’t always like other dogs. So, I am constantly on the prowl for an empty dog run. I prefer small dog runs because it’s easier to catch my massive pups if they refuse to obey the “come” command when it’s time to go home. Plus, you can park next to small dog runs, and I’m lazy.

AKITAS, DOG PARKS

AND MY EARLY MORNING ADVENTURE BY RIKKI CHEESE, NEWS ANCHOR FOR KTNV, CHANNEL 13

Small dog owners tend to be early risers, so I knew I was pushing it when I took Akira and Apollo to the small dog run at Police Memorial Park at 4 a.m. I had just gotten them inside when an elderly man drove up in a Lincoln Continental from the 1970s and stepped outside with two small dogs. Busted. Bad dog park etiquette on my part. I yelled out, “You can have the run. Just stay there and let me get my dogs back into my car.” The guy didn’t say a word as I walked the fur babies out of the run. We were literally an arm’s length away from my car when one of his dogs broke his leash and charged toward us. Bam! Apollo and Akira pulled me off my feet. My chest hit the grass, which, fortunately, had just been watered. Next thing I know, the small dog is running rings around us, and I’m booby-surfing with a dog on each leash. All I could think was, “Where are the people with camera phones? This crazy scene could go viral!” I laughed as I surfed, writing my own headline: “News anchor’s Akitas have her going in circles.” It seemed to go on forever, but fortunately, another man with a black Lab drove up next to my car and asked if I needed some help. “Yes! Grab one!” He grabbed Akira, helped me get back on my feet, and we were able to get the dogs into the car. The elderly man never said a word. He didn’t ask if I was OK. He just walked his dogs into the run and sat down. When I shared my story with 62

W oman M aga zine .V egas | FALL 2015

friends, most of whom have dogs, they were outraged. I just laughed. “Look at it from his perspective,” I said. “It’s 4 a.m. and a woman with quarter horses with fur and fangs is at your favorite park. Would you approach me? I don’t think so.” City of Las Vegas marshals have told me they spend a great deal of time breaking up dog park fights between owners, not canines. The posted rules address size and protocols per run, but they don’t address owner behavior. Many owners assume that all dogs will get along and their dogs are safe in the park.

My favorite phrase shouted at me is, “My dog is friendly!” However, some dogs simply aren’t dog park material; they do better in more structured environments. Dog parks are meant to allow canines to socialize, but they also must be supervised. We’ve all seen the owners who are so into their phones that they miss the signals that the play is about to go south. Southern Nevada has some of the best dog parks in the country, partly because so many of our parks are relatively new, and dog parks have become standard. We all have a responsibility to share them safely. Even at 4 a.m.

TALKING TO YOUNG CHILDREN ABOUT SEX AND INTIMACY AFTER MENOPAUSE BY DR. TIGER DEVORE

W

elcome to the forum for issues about women’s sexuality, provided by Las Vegas Woman magazine. I will serve as the moderator and expert for topics you ask about, as well as some discussion of ideas I want to bring to your attention. I want to thank the readers for sending in questions. My first question: “When do I talk about sex with my 7-year-old son and my 2-year-old daughter?”

The Clark County School District tried to address this issue by modernizing the sex education curriculum, using the SIECUS (Sex Information and Education Council of the United States) guidelines. Those guidelines turned out to have all kinds of material in them that many parents in the community found objectionable. My position is that guidelines are meant to be considered and adopted according to what works for the population in question. The SIECUS guidelines cover it all, on a basis of age appropriateness. Different people will find different levels of the SIECUS information to be useful or not, depending on their own sensibilities. If you look at SIECUS.org, you will find many useful resources to suggest various topics appropriate to young children. There are words to teach kids about sex in a way that takes the titillation and mystery out of sex, and normalizes all the challenges all of us face as we grow up with questions about our own bodies. At the same time, the guidelines can give parents a way to talk to their children about inappropriate touching from others and the dangers of engaging in sex before they are ready for it; sex is an adult choice with adult

consequences. If young people are going to engage in sex, I would hope they have the information to make good choices about what behaviors they engage in, knowing all the risks and how to minimize those risks in advance. My next question: “I am post menopause and am experiencing indifference to sex; how do I regain my youthful drive without drugs?” I am happy this question is being asked. If vaginal dryness is an issue, lubricants can make all the difference. If desire is the issue, and it often is after menopause, I cannot recommend strongly enough the value of physical exercise. Testosterone is the hormone that regulates sexual desire in both men and women. Physical exercise brings about a testosterone spike in human beings just about an hour after exercise. If you make exercise a regular habit (at least three times a week), your natural levels will rise and you will find yourself more interested in sex. Thanks for your questions. Please send in your questions about any aspect of sex and relationships, and I will get to them as they come in. If you want your question answered privately and not to be a part of this column, let me know that when you send it in. Being your

BEST ECO-SELF BY SHERRY SWENSK

L

iving your best self every day should include having the planet’s best interests somewhere in your daily routine. It can be as simple as diligently recycling plastic water bottles and newspapers. You can raise your consumer eco-consciousness and shop for earth-friendly products before hitting the “buy now” button.

making a bookshelf out of a broken ladder? Or a bird feeder from a chipped tea cup and saucer? Visit diyncrafts.com for more ideas.

Take a quick survey of your routine around the house. How much stuff do you just throw away that—with a little effort—could be recycled or repurposed? I’m a hard-core recycler, but I admit I’m the worst at being clever with useful clutter or even broken items that seem too promising to toss. But I have found some websites to inspire ideas.

When it comes to shopping for new products, there are many ways to support an Earth-friendly marketplace.

You may already be a Pinterest fanatic, which is a treasure trove of ideas on how to do just about everything with anything. Other resources like DIY (diyinspired. com/tag/repurposing-ideas) have a landfill full of ideas on how to reuse your unwanted household stuff. If you are the slightest bit crafty or can handle a glue gun; then you can upcycle with the best of them. And it doesn’t have to take a lot of time and talent. Did you ever think of

In fact, you many never throw anything away again! I know that sounds dangerous, so before you decide to dive into being a repurposing diva, make sure you

have time and space to save items. When it comes to shopping for new products, there are many ways to support an Earth-friendly marketplace. Shopping habits matter, and environmental experts say the more consumers ask for eco-conscious materials and manufacturing in the products they buy, the sooner the variety and availability of those products will become mainstream and easier on the waste stream. Merchandise and goods that are made with preconsumer and/or post-consumer waste have varying degrees of eco-benefits.

Pre-consumer waste saves scraps and trimmings from production materials that get repurposed into a different product instead of being thrown away. Post-consumer waste is a product that’s been used and then diverted from the landfill to be recycled into something else, like office printer paper or detergent bottles. Look for brands and labels that offer to take back their used clothing, shoes or cosmetic containers to be recycled into new products, sometimes offering a freebie product in exchange for your eco-effort. The clothing company Patagonia (patagonia.com/us/wornwear) asks for their active outdoor wear back when you’re done having fun with it, so it can be reworn or recycled into new cool gear. If you’re ready to toss out your yoga mat, down dog! Even those can be reused and recycled through a cool program by the Boulder Mat Company (theboldermatcompany. com). Yoga charities around the country are in need of mats for their school, elderly and underprivileged exercise programs. Talk about good karma! And finally, a company that is really good at reducing the amount of

You may alre ady be a Pintere st fanati c, which is a treasur e trove of id eas on how to d o just ab out everythin g with anything waste that goes into our landfills with their unique and fun products is reuseit.com. They have ecoendless ways to reuse and reduce everything for the whole family. They even donate 1 percent of their sales to environmental groups. So living your best eco-self is easier than you think. Even small changes to your habits at home and how you shop can improve your planet-friendly image of yourself.

BOURASSA

CREATING A SUCCESSFUL PRACTICE WHILE PUTTING THE CLIENT FIRST

M

ark J. Bourassa Esq. is the founding member of The Bourassa Law Group, LLC. The firm has attorneys admitted in Nevada, California, Arizona, Colorado, Missouri and Florida with offices in Las Vegas and Denver.

The practice focuses on litigation and trial work in civil matters. Clients are represented in state and federal courts in consumer claims against abusive debt collectors, construction defect claims against negligent builders and personal injury matters.

Why did you decide to go into the field of law? My career choice was guided by several years in the workforce between finishing college and starting law school. Many attorneys go straight from high school to an undergraduate degree to law school and then into practice. I didn’t follow that path. I spent four years between college and law school dealing with many of the experiences my clients struggle with today: holding down a job, paying

the bills, trying to make some headway in life. My real-world experience of working in a number of areas, such as construction, sales and the food and beverage industry, gave me perspective about what folks go through on a day-by-day basis and helped me recognize the things that really matter in my life.

Why did you pick the areas you practice in?

There are so many different practice areas: corporate law, insurance law, real estate law, maritime law, constitutional law and the list goes on. Ultimately, my decision to attend law school was based on my desire to help people; I wanted to be someone’s hero, to help folks that are getting ground up by the system get the results that they deserve. After graduating from Pepperdine Law School and putting in years of work to make partner in an insurance defense law firm, I decided that I needed to change my career direction back toward helping people, not insurance companies. In 2007, I left my partnership and started The

Bourassa Law Group.

How do you help your clients?

My firm focuses on helping people. Part of that is the recognition that most people can’t afford to pay the traditional hourly rates law firms charge. Accordingly, we have structured our practice around areas of law that we see a strong need for but that also permit us to offer services with little or no money out of pocket from our clients. For example, we have a strong practice in personal injury law, including car accidents and other injuries. We take all of these cases on a contingency fee, meaning that we are paid in a portion of our clients’ recovery. If we do not resolve the case and recover funds, we don’t get paid and the client owes us nothing. We also have a robust practice in what is known as fee shifting cases. In those cases, if we prevail in the case, the opposing side has to pay our attorney fees. Accordingly, we are also able to

take these cases without ever charging our client a dime. Some of the case types that qualify for fee shifting include employment discrimination, wage and hourly pay claims, civil rights claims and claims against collection agencies for abusive collection tactics. In those types of cases, the applicable laws state if we win, even if we only win $1, we get our full attorney fees from the bad guys.

Who are your inspirations?

My biggest inspirations are my sons, ages 2 and 4 years old. The blessings of children include an opportunity to relive your own childhood by watching them grow up. I am trying to raise my boys to be compassionate, thoughtful and hardworking. They challenge me, but there’s no better reward than time with my family. BASKETBALL TEAM DEMONSTRATES TEAMWORK & STRENGTH WOMEN’S ATHLETICS CONTINUE TO GROW IN POPULARITY

T

he University of Nevada, Las Vegas has always had a strong women’s basketball program, and Head Coach Kathy Olivier for the UNLV Lady Rebels basketball team is excited about the current season. “We have nine players returning, and I know it will be a strong team this year. It will be a big year for women’s athletics. The UNLV Lady Rebels are one of the focus points of athletics at the university. It is important we represent well, give 100 percent and work hard on and off the court, in the classroom and in the community.” This can be considered a definitive year for women’s sports. First, in an NBA Summer League game played on the campus of UNLV, Becky Hammon was the first female NBA Summer League coach as she led the Spurs against the Knicks and won the championship. There was also the triumph of the Women’s World Cup in soccer. “I really enjoy working with this team,” Olivier said. “They are a fun group, they work extremely hard, and the players are very focused.” The teams practiced and did some workouts over the summer months. “This team is a huge positive for the program, and I think we have some good leaders this year. We have two seniors, one junior and several sophomore students who have played on the court and are a standout in leadership. They show enthusiasm and passion for the game.” According to Olivier, it is important for women to play sports. Skills

are acquired that can help foster success in a career and other areas of life. Playing sports can teach women how to be responsible and strong. Women who play sports can become great role models and demonstrate how to fight through adversity. There is diversity on a team, and it is important for women to learn how to work with different people from different cultures. “It is such a positive experience to play college sports because what you learn can be applied to real life,” Olivier explained. Olivier was grateful for the opportunity to work with her team over the summer months. “This year, we had such a positive experience with our camp. Campers are from the community. We are mentoring young girls, and our team took a lot of pride representing the UNLV Lady Rebels. Grandparents or parents brought their granddaughters and daughters to camp, and to work with them is so rewarding,” she said. Sports are also one way to achieve and maintain good health. “You need to be healthy to be successful in business, be a good friend and great family member.” In fact, Olivier passed on her athletic traits to her daughter whom she coached on the University of California, Los Angeles squad. Earlier this year, UNLV placed a program-best eight members of the women’s basketball team on the 2015 Spring Academic All-

Reasons to begin a healthier lifestyle

BY TANIA MOLINA, CHC SYMMETRY IN MOTION PILATES & WELLNESS

T

here are many reasons to begin a healthier lifestyle, and my reason is my family. I wrote this article from the Florida Keys, spending time with the ones I love. I can think of many reasons incorporating quality movement and eating nutritious, wellbalanced meals. I believe the best motivation for sticking to a healthy lifestyle is feeling better as well as maintaining good health throughout our lives.

Here are some excellent reasons to start a healthier lifestyle today: 1. It works as an antidepressant. I am not suggesting stopping any prescribed medication, including antidepressants, without speaking to a physician, but many who exercise show improvement in their symptoms without the medication. 2. It reduces PMS symptoms. What woman doesn’t want that? With exercise, there are fewer symptoms of moodiness, anger

today

and overall better feelings. 3. It reduces stress and anxiety. Working out is the No. 1 fastest way to clear cortisol, the stress hormone, out of your system and calm a frantic mind. Ice cream or other comfort foods won’t make much of a dent in stress levels (not that we have anything against a scoop of Chunky Monkey for those who can tolerate dairy). 4. It boosts creativity. Try a quick stroll around the block.

Walking improves both convergent and divergent thinking, the two types associated with enhanced creativity. These are just some of the reasons that come to my mind. Once you get into the habit of a healthy routine, you will be able to see and experience the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. as Vegas Minimally Invasive Surgery and Women’s Pelvic Health Center, a part of WellHealth Medical Group, is now offering the MonaLisa Touch laser technology. This new technology has been shown to reverse the deterioration of the vaginal walls associated with a loss of estrogen. Estrogen loss can be due to aging, hormonal treatments for breast cancer and other conditions. Millions of women suffer silently with symptoms such as vaginal dryness, increased vaginal pH levels, itching, irritation and even pain during intercourse. With treatment from the MonaLisa Touch method, women can regain their quality of life and sexuality. The treatment method is one of the most advanced techniques currently available for vaginal photorejuventation. The laser technology, developed in Italy, delivers short CO2 ablative laser pulses to the vaginal wall, decreasing the symptoms seen with vaginal atrophy. Several patients at the Las Vegas Minimally Invasive Surgery-Women’s Pelvic Health Center have started the MonaLisa Touch treatment and are already reporting relief from their symptoms. Dr. K. Warren Volker, the lead doctor performing this newest treatment option, explained, “The revolutionary treatment presents a new path for women who are experiencing vaginal atrophy. Mother Nature hasn’t gotten the memo that women are living longer lives and aren’t ready to give up on their sexuality. outpatient treatments over 45 to 60 days, patients receiving the treatment will notice the cessation of their symptoms and a noticeable improvement in their day-to-day life. Dr. Melissa Gutierrez is the assistant medical director of Las Vegas Minimally Invasive Surgery-Women’s Pelvic Health Center as well as its fellowship program. “I believe we became the third place in the United States offering this technology. Estrogen loss can be due to aging, hormonal treatments for breast cancer and other conditions.

This percentage can be even higher in specific subcategories of women, such as those who have a history of breast cancer. In one study of breast cancer survivors, vaginal dryness was a symptom in 23.4 percent of the premenopausal patients. That number skyrockets to 61.5 percent in postmenopausal patients. The treatment has also provided a new option for breast cancer survivors suffering from vaginal atrophy and low estrogen levels. Because MonaLisa Touch is a non-hormonal option, cancer survivors will not develop cancerous cells. The treatment supplies a solution to messy, expensive creams and, in some cases, hormone replacement therapy.

this technique to our fellowship doctors, and it is a very unique program.”

“Unfortunately, estrogen replacement therapy is expensive, and even though health insurance may cover a little of the cost, it can still cost hundreds of dollars a month,” Dr. Gutierrez said. “With this technology, once it is performed, there is no longer the cost of estrogen replacement for years.” Another benefit is that there are not the side effects and risks associated with replacement therapy.

Las Vegas Minimally Invasive Surgery and Women’s Pelvic Health Center will be one of only four training facilities in the United States to teach physicians how to use the laser technology.

“I want to assure anyone considering this procedure that it is so quick, easy and pain-free. It takes about five minutes. I have never had a patient complain of pain,” Dr. Gutierrez stated.

According to medical research, as many as 50 percent of postmenopausal women in the United States suffer from vaginal atrophy; an estimated 16 million women are affected.

OFFERING SCIENCE-BASED TREATMENT FOR ALCOHOL ADDICTION

O

pened in August 2014, Start Fresh Recovery United, a management services organization (MSO), manages the operations of the Las Vegas Start Fresh Recovery clinic. Start Fresh Recovery focuses exclusively on alcohol addiction offering a comprehensive, science-based program treating alcohol addiction as a chronic medical condition to be managed. Bonnie Barnett is the CEO and a principle of Start Fresh Recovery United, LLC. “We offer a unique approach to recovery. Ours is a yearlong, outpatient program using a non-addictive medication that stops or significantly reduces the cravings for alcohol,” she explained. “Along with the medication, our patients work one-on-one with a private, personal recovery coach, all of whom are certified drug and alcohol counselors.” Raised in a small town in California, Barnett started in health care as a young working mother and had the opportunity to work in the business department of a hospital. She ultimately worked her way to a position as a hospital administrator. Barnett became involved with Start Fresh Recovery because her son’s father was an alcoholic, which was partly why the marriage ended. Sadly, he would die due to alcoholism. “My son first became aware of Start Fresh Recovery through a friend of his who also owns an MSO that supports Start Fresh clinics.” At the time, Barnett was working as a health care

consultant, and her son urged her to investigate Start Fresh Recovery clinics, which were expanding. She was offered the opportunity to open a clinic in Las Vegas with her partner. While it is not a franchise, all of the Start Fresh Recovery clinics are connected by its program which includes prescribing the FDA-approved medication naltrexone. Barnett explained that there is a particular patient profile of those who will likely be most successful in the Start Fresh program. “This program is not for everyone,” Barnett stated. “Because treatment is outpatient and conducted in the context of our patients’ day-to-day lives, it is designed primarily for high-functioning adults who recognize their alcohol consumption is a threat to their health and an impairment to functioning at their full potential.” A future activity for Start Fresh Recovery United is to open a clinic in Reno, as well as to implement a medical tourism program. Southern Nevada has become a medical treatment destination in recent years, and Barnett sees this as a perfect opportunity. “We will encourage patients to come to Las Vegas for treatment because ‘what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas,’” she said. “People living in states without Start Fresh clinics who have the means to slip away for a short stay in Las Vegas can confidentially have the naltrexone implant procedure done while here and return

home to continue their recovery. We then coordinate with their local recovery resources to continue their care following the Start Fresh Recovery program model.” “It can be difficult for people to discern if they actually have a problem. It can creep up over time, and one day a person realizes they can no longer control their drinking. It is a progressive disease, so the sooner a person realizes they need help the better.” Barnett wants everyone to understand there is no shame in seeking treatment; it is a disease like many others that can be treated, controlled and managed. “I am very interested in providing education about alcohol addiction and its effects,” Barnett stated. “I love being a part of the work we do and helping people. I believe I have found my calling.” Start Fresh Recovery is located at 501 S. Rancho Drive, Suite H50. For more information, call 702.919.0000 or visit startfreshrecovery.com. Belsky

DR. MARJORIE

By Debbie Hall

ENHANCING LIVES WITH COMPASSION AND CARE

C

hronic pain and its management can be all-encompassing and require the care of a board-certified physician with a specialty in Interventional Pain Management such as Marjorie Belsky, M.D. Having practiced for 16 years and now with her own practice, Integrated Pain Specialists, she has enhanced the lives of countless patients through her comprehensive and compassionate care. Dr. Belsky always wanted to become a doctor because of “a love of science and a desire to help and heal people.” Dr. Belsky studied anesthesiology specifically because she “found the combination of various physiologies engaging. It was apparent to me that anesthesiologists save people’s lives and improve the quality of those lives. It is not just putting people to sleep. All elements of medicine are combined in anesthesiology.” She then developed an interest in interventional pain management, which is a subspecialty of anesthesiology, after her residency because she had an interest in relieving people from chronic pain.

“Chronic pain really impacts every aspect of patients’ lives, including work and personal relationships,” Dr. Belsky explained. She recently saw the movie “Cake” starring Jennifer Aniston as a woman who survives a car accident but is in chronic pain. Dr. Belsky was able to relate the story to many of the people she encounters in her practice. In the movie, when a woman in Aniston’s chronic pain support group commits suicide, she befriends the woman’s husband and son. “The movie depicts some of the difficulties for people living in chronic pain,” Dr. Belsky said. Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Science degree from Emory University, Atlanta, a master’s degree interdisciplinary in biological and physical sciences from Touro College School of Health Sciences, New York, and a medical degree from the Technion–Israel Institute of Technology, Rappaport Faculty of Medicine in Haifa, Israel. Dr. Belsky’s postgraduate training included her preliminary medical residency at the Jersey Shore Medical Center in New Jersey followed by an anesthesiology residency at the University of California, Irvine, Medical Center in

Orange, California. She then continued with her fellowship in interventional pain management at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center. She became board-certified in both anesthesiology and interventional pain management. Moving to Las Vegas in 2005, she opened Integrated Pain Specialists. Married with three young sons, her husband, Dr. Mario Tarquino, specializes in anesthesiology and pain management as well. He is board-certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology and has been in the medical field for over 16 years, as well as part of the pain practice. “I became educated in the management of a practice with the experience I acquired while living in Los Angeles working in private practice. I knew when I opened Integrated Pain Specialists that I had the experience and knowledge to provide the highest quality pain management services to those who need help in Southern Nevada,” Dr. Belsky said. There are eight staff members including her husband and herself. Dr. Belsky treats a wide range of patients including young, middleaged and older individuals. While the most complaints are back and neck pain, Integrated Pain Specialists treats a variety of symptoms. When patients come to her, they have usually tried some medications and other treatments, either independently or under the supervision of another doctor. The main focus of the practice is in interventional pain, which encompasses different types of injections to help with presenting complaints. Additionally, Dr. Belsky and her staff may refer a patient to other specialists to optimize their care and provide the least invasive but most effective treatment possible.

76

She is very focused on her practice and patients and ensures that each patient receives compassionate care. Treatments are performed at a certified and licensed surgical center with the most advanced technology available to relieve patients’ pain. Dr. Belsky’s goal is to relieve 50 to 75 percent of a patient’s pain at a minimum, improving overall function and helping the patient return to as many normal activities as possible. Setting a good example for her patients, she is very physically active. “I run, I bike and I swim on the Las Vegas Masters swim team. I am fortunate to compete with the team several times a year,” she said. In two of the short course meters competitions with the swim team, her relay finished in the top 10 nationally for their age group. “Swimming sets a good example for my patients. It is an excellent way to relax the body, promote healing and relieve pain.” She is also an artist who received an art scholarship while obtaining her undergraduate degree. Dr. Belsky shows and sells paintings in Las Vegas and last year showcased her art at the City of the World Gallery. Dr. Belsky will hold another show in September at the gallery. She also had two pieces on display at the Southern Nevada Museum of Fine Art as part of the Anne Frank exhibit. “I am diverse and trained in all mediums, but I concentrate in watercolor. I used to paint in oils, but when my children got older, I switched to watercolors because it is safer around children and is a beautiful and often overlooked medium,” she said. Dr. Belsky loves living in Las Vegas and raising her family in Southern Nevada, and it shows as she gives back to her community. “I am on the school board of Solomon Schechter

Day School. I do charitable work through my synagogue. An example is when I recently took my sons to clean gravestones at the Jewish cemetery. It was a somber experience but a good reminder of how we should appreciate one another.” She also participated in the Ramah Israel Bike Ride this year to support special needs camp programs. “They focus on children, teens and young adults with disabilities and special needs. Although it does not affect me personally, I feel it is an excellent opportunity to help these very deserving children attend summer camp.” Over 80 people participate, riding over 250 miles in five days across Israel to raise funds for this cause. Part of the route included the Syrian and Lebanese border including the Valley of Tears along the Syrian border. Dr. Belsky is a warm and compassionate person who cares about her patients, expressing herself through her family, charity work, sports and art. She exemplifies the finest qualities of one of the Doctors of the Desert and is proud to call Las Vegas home. Dr. Marjorie E. Belsky, MD Integrated Pain Specialists 9333 W. Dr. Edward

Zimmerman E

veryone has their own definition of beauty and health. Dr. Edward Zimmerman of Las Vegas Laser and Lipo makes it clear that it all begins with building a culture of taking care of people as well as staying current with the newest methods and equipment. Las Vegas Laser and Lipo stays on the cutting edge and is again introducing new techniques and technologies. An innovative procedure that tightens and plumps up the external and internal vaginal tissue without surgery, ThermiVa uses a slender, curved probe to deliver comfortable monopolar radio frequency energy. Feeling like a warm massage, ThermiVa not only tightens and rejuvenates the internal vagina without surgery but can also shrink redundant outer tissue for less revealing swimsuit wear and more comfortable intimate moments. It also strengthens the ligaments surrounding the bladder and urethra, which can help female stress incontinence that can happen when a woman coughs, sneezes or bends over. A similar device by Alma Lasers called the FemiLift, which uses a fractional carbon dioxide laser, has also been used by Dr. Z (as he is known) with great success. “We have helped many women, and it has been great for our practice,” Dr. Z said. “It is easy, painless, non-surgical and also helps with increased lubrication, heightened vaginal sensations and improved orgasms. It can be performed at the same time as labiaplasty (surgical reduction of extra tissue under local anesthetic) when needed.” Another new innovation is using platelet-rich plasma (PRP), not only for sports injuries but also with cosmetic procedures. PRP is isolated from a small sample of the patient’s own blood, collected prior to the procedure. The blood sample is spun in a special centrifuge, isolating the yellow plasma, which contains the healing factors that help the tissue rejuvenate and grow new blood vessels in the area. PRP is used for the Vampire Facial, Vampire Facelift and Vampire Breast Lift. Dr. Z is certified by the developer of these procedures. PRP is also being used by Dr. Z with fillers, facelifts and laser resurfacing.

PRP strategically and painlessly injected in the vaginal region is known as the O Shot. It is designed to help with increased sensation and intimacy. “It also helps with stress incontinence, so it is a winwin-win,” Dr. Z. said. “There is no down time, you can go home and start testing out the results immediately.” Men (and couples) are also enjoying the benefits of the new technologies and techniques. The Man Shot is when Zimmerman painlessly injects PRP into the penis to improve erections. Dr. Z explained, “Girth can also be improved with various fillers (off-label, but very successful). The entire procedure takes minutes, and there is no down time. Micro-needling utilizes a recently registered FDA device that

oscillates back and forth, comfortably moving a disposable tip with 9 to 12 sterile needles into the epidermis and dermis. This causes micro punctures and stimulates healing and rejuvenation. It is used to smooth and blend texture and color of faces, necks, backs of hands and décolletage. Las Vegas Laser and Lipo is even starting to micro-needle men’s scalps with PRP and other growth factors. While there are no guarantees about regrowth of hair, the early results are promising. Another new technology at LVLL is the MLS low-level laser. It is part of an a la carte menu of services offered to patients who are going into surgery or who have had a recent musculoskeletal injury. There is no pain or down time with this multi-visit, 15- to 20-minute, dual wavelength laser treatment. Interestingly, this technology was initially used to benefit multimillion-dollar thoroughbred racehorses. Without the use of pain medication and its possible side effects, these procedures are taking down pain and swelling with no repercussions. “We have been using this laser to shorten healing time and discomfort after cosmetic surgeries. We have also successfully helped patients with knee, lower back, shoulder and elbow issues,” Dr. Z said. “I’ve used this procedure on my own arthritic fingers to relieve stiffness and achiness from years of liposculpting. This MLS laser is exciting and effective.” One of the most cutting-edge procedures at Las Vegas Laser and Lipo has been studied and implemented for two years. It uses another FDA registered device as part of the practice of medicine. It appears that fat not only stores up calories, toxins and hormones but also is the home of rejuvenative cells that help heal the body. They are abundant in fat tissue (more than in bone marrow or blood). Adipose-derived regenerative cells (ADRCs), cytokines, growth factors and platelets that are isolated from a patient, are injected into joints, utilized with laser treatments or dripped back into that patient during that same session. They have

helped patients with fibromyalgia, bowel issues, tennis elbow, ankle and rotator cuff issues. Treatments are often combined at LVLL with PRP and a referral to a personal trainer or physical therapy. “This is a wonderful time to be in medicine because we can really start to help patients use their own bodies as manufacturing plants for healing. We can isolate, concentrate and inject healing cells and tissue factors where they will do the most good. It is helping people help themselves,” Dr. Z said. All of these procedures are done in the state-licensed, nationally accredited Las Vegas Laser and Lipo office and surgical facility under local or light conscious sedation. General anesthesia is not required, and while there is recovery time, it is generally not as lengthy as in previous years. Procedures are also becoming less invasive. Dr. Z teaches nationally and internationally with passion and vigor. He is an examiner for the American Board of Laser Surgery, a member of the Board of Trustees for the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and a clinical faculty member of Touro University School of Osteopathic Medicine. Along with a caring staff, Dr. Z is excited about the future of medicine, offering it with dedication and safety at Las Vegas Laser and Lipo. FALL 2015 | W oman M aga zine .V egas

Dr.Jennifer D

Cha

r. Jennifer Cha offers expertise in dental implants and periodontics, specifically in full mouth reconstruction. Along with her husband, Dr. Leon Chen, also an accomplished periodontist, they opened the first Dental Implant Institute of Las Vegas in 2003. The Dental Implant Institute offers advanced dental care through revolutionary procedures, such as the 5 in 1 Technique, Hydraulic Sinus Lift and Vertical Translation Technique, all procedures developed by the Dental Implant Institute.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a titanium screw that is placed in the jawbone. Its purpose is to replace the missing root of a tooth. There are several types of dental implants that vary in shape, architecture and the techniques used to place them.

Placing a single dental implant should take no more than 30 minutes, and integration takes about three to four months. During this time, you should have a temporary tooth in place. Following the three to four month period, you should have a permanent crown.

What is the 5 in 1 technique?

The 5 in 1 technique includes extraction of the tooth, bone grafting, sinus lift, implant placement and temporary crown all in the same visit. This cuts treatment time in half, involves only one set of surgical procedures and, in most cases, requires only three visits to our office. Traditional implant placement techniques can take several years to complete, and in many cases, patients or doctors just give up or refer another dentist. Ordinary implant techniques involve painful and lengthy procedures that have long periods of downtime, often leaving patients with only a temporary removable denture or a temporary crown during this entire process. For years, we worked diligently to help design dental implants and procedures that met the patients’ needs while eliminating unnecessary trauma and maintaining the ability to complete all procedures within three to six months from the initial visit date. During the three- to six-month period, our patients all have fixed temporary crowns for aesthetics and function.

What is the Vertical Translation Technique?

The Vertical Translation Technique, or VTT, is an effective way for treating gum recession without having to transplant tissue from a donor site. VTT treats the underlying issue of gum recession by addressing the source of the problem: bone recession. The procedure is quick, done by simply making a flap on the existing gum tissue, cleaning up the site, adding bone and then stretching the flap over the site. VTT can help eliminate sensitivities to cold and even out the gum, providing a more natural look. You can find a great animated video showing the procedure on YouTube.

What if I am not a candidate for dental implants?

Everyone is a candidate for dental implants even if you’ve been told your case is hopeless. Before you let anyone convince you otherwise, I’d highly recommend you find an implant specialist, one who has the expertise and specializes in dental implants with bone reconstruction.

Eva Dr. Liang E

va Liang, M.D., creates better vision using advanced technology.

For Dr. Liang, improving eyesight for Southern Nevadans drives her work at Center For Sight, a leading eye care practice with multiple offices in the area. “Witnessing the transformation in someone’s life and seeing the enjoyment and confidence people get from being able to improve their vision is extremely satisfying,” said Dr. Liang. Dr. Liang serves Las Vegas as a board-certified ophthalmologist and refractive surgeon. Center for Sight, her ophthalmic practice, specializes in advanced laser refractive cataract surgery, LASIK, i-Stent glaucoma surgery and, most recently, corneal inlay procedures for the correction of presbyopia. Center For Sights exists to bring the best technological advancements in eye care to Southern Nevada. A new treatment recently approved by the FDA allows Dr. Liang to offer an exciting and effective surgical option for patients with presbyopia. Presbyopia develops when the natural lens of the eye begins to lose its flexibility, causing patients to need reading glasses in order to accomplish near tasks like reading a newspaper or using a mobile device. “People between the ages of 45 and 60 will benefit most from this new inlay technology, called KAMRA. Before the KAMRA inlay, the ophthalmic community did not have a great surgical solution for these patients,” said Dr. Liang. In the span of her 15-year medical career, Dr. Liang has surgically preserved and enhanced the gift of sight for over 20,000 patients. As patients with presbyopia are often not ideal candidates for LASIK or cataract procedures, the KAMRA corneal inlay is an excellent option. Smaller and thinner than a contact lens, the inlay is a mini-ring with an opening in the center. By using this pinhole effect, the inlay focuses light coming into the eye. This restores near vision while maintaining distance vision. “We’re able to make a real difference in our patients’ lives,” said Dr. Liang. “I’m always pleased when patients tell me how thrilled they are with their entire experience

here, including their interaction with every member of the staff.” “We want all of our patients to come away with that wonderful feeling of improvement in their lives. We treasure the gift of sight, and it is our mission to make our patients’ world 20/Happy,” said Dr. Liang. Dr. Liang earned her medical degree from the University of Nevada School of Medicine. Her postgraduate training included an internship at the University of Hawaii Integrated Transitional Program in Honolulu, followed by an ophthalmology residency at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. Dr. Liang is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the American College of Surgeons. Outside of medicine, Dr. Liang enjoys hiking and traveling. She is married to health care executive and entrepreneur Anthony Ausband and is a proud mother to their three young boys.

ompleting 25 years of the art of medicine, Michael S. Mall, M.D., reflected upon the evolution of his practice, the accomplishment of his goals—both professional and personal—the patients’ lives he has touched over those years, and the direction he is taking for the future. The art of medicine continues to be eroded with large corporations buying up practices, promoting cookie-cutter, onesize-fits-all delivery of depersonalized medical care and shifting the focus of medicine to the bottom line in terms of dollars.

“Originally, my practice grew from nothing when I arrived in Las Vegas to the point of seeing 40 to 45 patients a day by word-of-mouth referrals, emergency room referrals and hospital on-call follow-up patients. After 17 years of a frantic pace and losing the feeling of connection to my patients while practicing standard delivery of medical care, I made one of the best decisions in my career. I changed my practice to a Medical Concierge membershiponly model for the delivery of highly personalized health care,” Dr. Mall said. Going into Medical Concierge reignited Dr. Mall’s passion for medicine and allowed him to focus on the whole person. He can optimize his patients’ health with a proactive focus on prevention of disease as well as implementing wellness programs. Dr. Mall limits his practice to a maximum of 600 members as opposed to 3,000 to 5,000 patients in a traditional standard medical practice. His concierge patients benefit greatly with 30-minute same- or

next-day office appointments and 24/7 access to Dr. Mall’s personal cell number as well as the cell numbers of his medical assistants. Patients enjoy a full suite of laboratory screenings with a full-time inhouse phlebotomist, so they will never have to leave his office. In addition, he offers a myriad of personalized programs such as age management, nutritional programs, hormone replacement programs for both men and women, weight loss programs and smoking cessation programs. He also offers treatment for both acute and chronic medical conditions. The Affordable Care Act has fueled an increase in patients seeking a more personal, higher quality of health care, as the current system has been flooded with patients who have received care from overworked doctors who spend less and less time with each patient. Patients want a doctor who really cares about them and their health. Dr. Mall’s Medical Concierge practice has delivered personalized quality care to satisfied patients, optimizing their health in ways that are unimaginable with a traditional medical model of care. In addition, he is a role model for his patients, as he has personally lost over 60 pounds and now maintains his body fat percentage below 10 percent by practicing what he preaches about diet and exercise. The natural progression of being healthy and feeling good is to look as good as you feel. As more and more of his Medical Concierge patients made lifestyle changes with hormone replacement, weight loss, exercise and smoking cessation, they requested cosmetic services to complement how they were now feeling about themselves. Dr. Mall learned about injectable fillers, Botox and non-invasive laser treatments to provide services desired by his patients. As he had more time to devote to the cosmetic wellbeing of his patients because of the Medical Concierge model, he co-founded New Image Advanced Laser Skin Center and became its medical director. New Image became a full-service laser skin center with three laser trained medical aestheticians, providing skin resurfacing, skin tightening, skin photo facials with IPL, body contouring treatments that shrink fat and simultaneously tighten skin, and virtually painless hair removal with the latest technology. Patients can look years younger with laser treatments, injectable fillers for lips, cheeks and nasolabial folds, Botox treatments for wrinkles or a combination of all. Surgery stretches skin to a thinner, more unnatural look, but laser actually produces more collagen to replace what is lost through aging,

providing a more natural, younger-looking skin. Initially a woman’s arena, men now comprise the fastest-growing segment of Dr. Mall’s cosmetic practice with laser treatments and dermal injectables. “My greatest sense of accomplishment comes from merging Medical Concierge care with New Image’s cosmetic care under one roof. This allows me seamless delivery of personalized health care complemented with personalized cosmetic skin care to treat the entire spectrum of the needs of my patients. Improving how one looks on the outside positively affects how one

feels on the inside. I am very fortunate to be able to provide that care as well as optimize internal health.” FALL 2015 | W oman M aga zine .V egas

Ed Dr. Malik I

n 1988, Dr. Edward Malik established Eyes & Optics with an eclectic rock vibe, making eyewear fun and sexy. Moving to Downtown Summerlin, the new location won fourth place in the nation in a competition with other eyewear centers as one of the top places for design, originality and product selection. Eyes & Optics is privately owned and managed by Dr. Malik for that personal touch. The shop features the work of the top indie designers in the world, many exclusively at Eyes & Optics. He also has a lab on-site so that glasses can be made in the store. According to Dr. Malik, he generally sees the woman in the family first. “She will come in, and maybe bring the children. In a sense, she is auditioning me, our service and our products. If I pass, since she is the ultimate decision maker, I know I will help her family and friends.” He admits that he might not see the husband of the family on a regular basis since men are more likely to put off getting eye exams and new glasses.

Dr. Malik has also been playing in a rock band, The Melancholics, for over 20 years as a drummer. “We found a new singer, and it’s the band we always wanted. We are one of the most original bands in Las Vegas. We are professional musicians, we chart well, but sometimes we just don’t have the time we want to devote to our music.” As for Eyes & Optics, “We really have a worldclass optometry operation actually owned by the doctor. We have been creating something different since we started the store— rock ‘n’ roll and eyeglasses go together.”

Understanding the mindset of men, Dr. Malik is making it easy for them to get the care and sight correction they need with the Executive Care plan. “They can come in between football games or after work.” This program is also geared toward busy executives including lawyers and even doctors. “I will get them in and give them a concierge eye exam in 30 minutes or less. I use all electronic equipment with no medication or drops, no touching of the eye, no probes and no blurry vision when they leave. “No one has attempted this before. I have also reached out to the concierge doctors to work with them for specialized eye care for their patients,” Dr. Malik explained. He also wanted a brick-and-mortar store. Dr. Malik understands people will buy glasses online—there are apps that will check a person’s eyes, and he believes this is a teen market. However, the center is for adults who need in-depth eye care and want to make a statement with their glasses. Dr. Malik also works with those who need specialized contact lenses. For those who need to carry oxygen, Dr. Malik designed glasses, Oxyview, where the oxygen tubes are attached to the glasses in the back.

Mohs surgery is an outpatient procedure used to treat this form of cancer, providing patients the highest cure rate for many skin cancer types including basal and squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma and other rare or aggressive skin cancers. Mohs surgery is unique because it allows the Mohs surgeon to precisely remove skin cancers without removing large amounts of normal skin. The surgeons at SDLC are two of only a few fellowship-trained Mohs surgery certified providers in Southern Nevada. The doctors are skilled in all forms of invasive and cosmetic dermatologic surgery procedures. Abnormal moles, cysts, lipomas and other growths that are either dangerous or symptomatic can be removed surgically in an outpatient setting without the need for general anesthesia. Other growths, such as moles on the face, scars or other unsightly spots, can be removed solely for cosmetic improvement of the skin. A wide variety of cosmetic procedures involving microneedling and lasers are offered, which can be used to treat tattoos, wrinkles, brown spots, facial redness, blood vessels, hair removal and acne scars. SDLC utilizes six laser treatment devices, which have been proven to be effective methods to permanently remove unwanted pigmented lesions, sometimes in as few as one or two treatments. The newest of their lasers, the PicoSure provides the fastest and easiest non-surgical, non invasive laser skin treatments available. With cutting-edge pico-second laser pulse technology, more effective treatments are performed in fewer sessions while reducing the risk of scarring. When it comes to acne scarring, the doctors have years of specialized training with leading experts in acne scarring therapy for patients of all skin tones and types. Acne scarring therapy is a specialized field that is constantly adding new treatments, and treatment plans are tailored to the specific patient to significantly improve the appearance of the skin.

What happens when a patient walks into your reception area? They notice the comfortable, quiet reception area, designed to be more like a living room than a waiting room. Cookies are baked several times a day and offered along with coffee and tea.

What should I expect at my first consultation?

We start building our relationships when we listen to your concerns. This visit takes about 90 minutes, and I spend about 45 minutes with you. Investing that much time and detail here saves you time and allows you to make sure that we are the best possible fit for you and your needs. We will discuss what we see, present options and explain the next steps. Patients can see exactly what is going on in their mouth and make an informed choice on how they want to proceed. The timeframe for the ideal treatment can be adjusted to fit the patient’s schedule and budget. We believe that offering this consultation is the best way to educate people about what is available to help them get a healthy smile that will last.

What is it like in the examination room?

During your initial visit, you will receive an executive physical of your mouth, teeth, jaw joints (TMJ) and masticatory muscles. One of the many uses for the 42-inch television in each exam room is that, as a camera takes photos of your mouth, you can see exactly what I see with my magnifying glasses.

What are some of the services you offer? We are a full-service dental practice that includes full mouth reconstruction, dental implants, TMJ disorder, including treatment for migraines, headaches caused from bite problems, veneers and laser gum therapy.

different types of technology include digital X-rays, intra-oral cameras, computerized bite analysis and lasers for soft and hard tissue applications. We offer smile design, smile makeover, dental facelifts, instant orthodontics, porcelain veneers, crowns inlays and onlays, tooth bonding, tooth-colored fillings, porcelain fillings, teeth whitening and gum contouring. I have worked with my master dental ceramist for almost 20 years, and he is available for custom shading and discussing the process with you.

What is your philosophy on dental health? I advocate good internal health, as well as a beautiful smile. The best analogy to explain this concept is that of a home. You can beautify your home, but if the foundation is cracked and shifting, there will be problems and the home can eventually collapse. It’s the same with teeth. While much can be done to create a beautiful smile, it is essential that any functional problems with the teeth, mouth and gums are addressed and treated. A smile makeover is just cosmetic, while a full mouth reconstruction combines both aesthetics and function. However, the decision is totally up to the patient, and I strive to make certain each person is empowered with choices.

Cynthia Dr. Payne D

r. Cynthia Payne is a board certified optometrist specializing in the treatment and management of ocular disease and the owner of Trendsetter Eyewear. She enjoys working with people to improve their vision, assess the health of their eyes and treat eye disease. She also provides pre- and post-operative care for patients at LASIK of Nevada in Las Vegas and Reno. Motivated by the freedom optometry provides, from the ability to practice anywhere, choosing to be self-employed or work for another doctor full time- or part-time, to working in research and teaching; Dr. Payne chose the field of optometry. Dr. Payne has been practicing in private optometry since 1997 and opened Trendsetter Eyewear in 2011.

Dr. Payne attended the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, where she earned her Doctorate of Optometry. A graduate of Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee, she received a Bachelor of Science with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry. She also completed one year

of graduate study at the University of Tennessee, Memphis in neuroscience and worked for an additional two years as a research assistant in cancer pharmacology at the University of Tennessee, Memphis.

What are some of the current technical advances in the field? Optometry is somewhat unique in that there is both an optical component and a health care component. For example, in the optical field, some of the newest options are digitally designed eyeglass lenses (computer designed for optimized vision, i.e. sharper vision in all parts of the lens and better night vision) and more options of contact lenses that are healthier to wear (more oxygen transmission, stay cleaner, better for dryness). In the health care field, one of the newest concerns is protecting against the damage from blue light emitted by LED sources such as TV, computer screens and smartphones. There are new lenses and coatings specifically to block blue light from entering the eye and damaging the retina. Also, optometry is utilizing Epigenetics as a method to help decrease our risk for macular degeneration or other autoimmune mediated diseases that impact the health of our eyes.

How can someone protect their eyes and eyesight?

One of the healthiest choices a person can make for their eyes is ultraviolet protection. Ultraviolet increases the incidence of cataracts, macular degeneration, pterygium and skin cancer. Choosing sunglasses or eyeglasses with UV protection helps decrease the risk of these diseases of the eye (and wrinkles). All the things that are good for the rest of the body also apply to the eyes; like not smoking (smoking increases the risks of macular degeneration, cataract, glaucoma, diabetes, dry-eye syndrome, thyroid disease); maintaining a balanced nutrition (antioxidants, omega-3, lutein and zeaxanthin for the macula); and routine exercise. Genetic wellness testing can help someone eat foods that work with their DNA to optimize their health.

Aanshu Dr. Shah D

r. Aanshu Shah, radiologist, is the Director of Women’s Imaging at Steinberg Diagnostic Medical Imaging Centers. Dr. Shah considers this an exciting time in medicine, where game-changing advancements in technology are improving her ability to impact patients’ lives. She credits her parents for her desire to succeed and has been with Steinberg Diagnostic Medical Imaging Centers for 15 years. Her education includes her undergraduate degree at Michigan State University, medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School, residency training at the University of Pittsburgh and fellowship training in Women’s Imaging at Magee Women’s Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Why did you go into the medical profession?

I have always had a tremendous desire to help people and to make a difference in their lives. When I was in the sixth grade, I decided that becoming a doctor would give me the greatest opportunity to do this. Many of my patients return year after year, and I enjoy the close relationships that I build with them.

Why did you choose to specialize in radiology? Radiology fascinates me—the complexity of it goes way beyond just a simple X-ray or ultrasound. The technology is powerful and amazing. It allows us to look inside a human being and see what’s happening. I get to work with physicians in every field of medicine, from oncology to orthopedics, and being able to speak the unique language of their specialty and help them to know what kind of treatment plan is best for their patient is vital. We have a tremendous responsibility to deliver accurate information about what we see in a patient’s medical images. I embrace and love that about what I do.

What are the new technologies and advancements for diagnosing women?

Perhaps the single most important advancement in medical imaging to benefit women is happening right now. Tomosynthesis, or 3D mammography, will revolutionize how we read mammograms. We will find more cancers, have fewer callbacks and cause less stress and anxiety to patients. What’s more, the GE

SenoClaire technology we are using delivers no more radiation to the patient than the standard digital mammogram. Other 3D technology in the marketplace increases a patient’s exposure to ionizing radiation by at least two times. I have been so fortunate to witness these tremendous changes, and I am so excited and proud to help bring this new life-saving technology to women in Las Vegas.

What charities do you and Steinberg Diagnostic support?

Steinberg Diagnostic believes in being a good neighbor and community partner and supports many charities in town. Personally, I am involved with the National Charity League with my daughter and the Young Men’s Service League with my son. Through this work, we can expose our kids to the wonderful and important work of many community organizations throughout Las Vegas. It is great to be connected to the community Specialties: and to teach Diagnostic Radiology: Specialist in my children the value Steinberg Diagnostic of giving Medical Imaging Centers back.

Fertility CENTER of Las Vegas

The

Pathway to Parenthood

T

he birth of a child is a precious gift. While some couples do not experience difficulty conceiving, there are many who desperately want a child but are unable to have one without medical assistance. The Fertility Center of Las Vegas and Drs. Shapiro and Daneshmand are known worldwide for their superior safety and success rates and offer exceptional care.

Then she met Seth. “When I first met Tammy, she let me know, and I thought we would never have a baby,” Seth said. But Tammy had heard about The Fertility Center of Las Vegas and Dr. Shapiro’s exemplary success rates. They found hope in Dr. Shapiro, and together, Tammy and Seth decided they were willing to try any medical procedure possible to have a child. Due to Tammy’s age (36), the couple decided to start treatment immediately.

Tammy Grabel, publisher of Las Vegas Woman magazine, and her husband, magician and entertainer Seth Grabel, recently welcomed their daughter, Grace Grabel, with the assistance of Drs. Shapiro and Daneshmand and The Fertility Center of Las Vegas.

Dr. Shapiro really wanted to help Tammy and Seth achieve the family they so greatly desired. The couple had to begin three months in advance to get prepared. “Seth was an amazing partner. He was not only emotionally supportive but also helped me with the initial injections. We found out there was a blockage in one of my tubes, so a medical procedure was performed so that we could continue with the treatments,” Tammy said.

Tammy had always wanted a child. But in her late 20s, she was diagnosed with Premature Ovarian Failure (premature menopause), which is a loss of normal function of ovaries before age 40. She was told that the chances of her conceiving naturally were less than 5 percent. After intense therapy, Tammy eventually came to a place of acceptance that she would not have a child. 92

“It was an interesting experience I never thought I would be a part of,” Seth said. “I really thought we would never have a baby, but we got a miracle.” As a busy entertainer with a full schedule, it could be quite

difficult for Seth at times. “I had to give her an injection every night at 7 p.m., so that meant I had to meet with her at 6:30 p.m., no matter what we were doing, every single day for weeks, which meant we really had to coordinate. I had to stick a needle in my love which was very hard. But it was worth it.” According to Tammy, “There was one moment Seth gave me the shot—we were weeks into it—and I looked back at him and could see his frustration. But he kept it together, and it was only for that moment. I must say, looking back on it, my hormones before becoming pregnant were not as extreme as they are after giving birth. But still, it took a toll on me. There were days I was tired, but we were really committed to doing it and staying on track. I had to take so many pills a day and do an injection once a day. There are creams involved, and everything is on a regimented schedule. I had to get a pill calendar and an ovulation form, which I kept throughout treatment.” Then there was the big moment. Due to her body frame and the high probability of twins, only one embryo was implanted. “Dr. Shapiro

does the right thing medically and morally. We did ask for two, but he said it was too risky. He did not want to put me or the baby at risk.” Seth was there by Tammy’s side when the embryo was implanted. “There was an ultrasound screen, and when it was implanted, Seth and I got to witness the exact moment our baby was ready to grow inside of me.” “It was nerve-racking when I first came home after the appointment. I got the hiccups and freaked out. I was worried I had juggled the baby somehow,” Tammy said. “After everything we went through, we were both very excited but honestly pretty scared as well. You don’t really know if it is going to work after all of this time and effort.” Five days later, it was confirmed that Tammy was pregnant, and they cried with joy. Even though the pregnancy test came back positive, Tammy was still on a regimen, keeping track with a strict schedule to make certain her baby had the support needed to maintain the pregnancy. Because it is such a challenging experience, Seth understood Tammy’s moods and physical experiences. “Communication is the key,” Tammy said. “You have to communicate, and Seth was very supportive, even when it was difficult for him. He really stepped in and kept up the optimism.” This procedure can test a relationship, but if communication is there, it can bring you closer together. The joy Tammy and Seth are experiencing with Grace is hard to put into words, and they love every minute of being parents. “If you feel like it is hopeless, there are always options,” Tammy said. “It is nothing to be ashamed of, and if you are having trouble conceiving, get checked out because there are so many factors. Many couples have trouble conceiving, so don’t wait.”

The process of In vitro fertilization typically begins by stimulating the woman’s ovaries with fertility medications so that multiple follicles will develop. The eggs in these follicles are then matured, retrieved and fertilized with sperm in the laboratory. Next, the fertilized eggs (embryos) are grown in carefully controlled laboratory conditions until they are ready to be transferred to the woman’s uterus. Any remaining embryos can be frozen for future use.

If you feel like it is hopeless, there are always options In vitro fertilization is a very versatile procedure. The eggs may come from the intended parent or an egg donor. The sperm can come from an intended parent or a sperm donor. The embryos may be transferred to the uterus of an intended parent or a gestational carrier who carries the pregnancy for the intended parent(s). IVF can be attempted using either fresh or frozen embryos. IVF has successfully been used to provide children to heterosexual couples, same-sex couples, single women and single men. The Fertility Center of Las Vegas doctors

and staff understand the importance of personalized care. Fertility treatments are started with extensive diagnostic testing to ensure that each patient is properly assessed and correctly diagnosed. Once personal fertility challenges are determined, there is a consultation to review the appropriate fertility treatments. Together with your doctor, you will select the course of treatment that is best for you. The Fertility Center of Las Vegas is one of the leading fertility centers in the world. Since 1988, it has helped create thousands of families by providing the most advanced fertility treatments available today. Together, Dr. Shapiro and Dr. Daneshmand have pioneered groundbreaking research, which has improved upon the success and safety of IVF treatment and garnered them domestic and international recognition from both patients and physicians. Their expertise has made them some of the most sought after physicians in their field, and they are often called upon by their colleagues to treat complex patients or those with previously unsuccessful cycles. The Fertility Center of Las Vegas client list consists of parents from all walks of life, including celebrities, executives, physicians and dignitaries from across the globe. With more than 30 years providing assisted reproductive technology treatment, hopeful parents can be assured they will receive the highest quality care at The Fertility Center of Las Vegas. MOLD

ELIMINATORS: CONQUERING MOLD IN A DESERT CLIMATE BY NAZANIN HAKIM

L

iving in Las Vegas, there are many weather changes residents don’t have to contend with on a regular basis including major earthquakes, blizzards, tornadoes, or hurricanes. But water intrusions as well as flash floods are a part of this environment and one of the biggest issues is the growth of mold across the Valley. Mold is a fungi that every human being is allergic to and it has been linked to diseases and serious allergic reactions. Mold is actually 100,000 species of microscopic fungi that only requires oxygen, water, organic source and a nutrient source in order to grow. This fungi multiplies itself in just a few days once it starts growing. “When a water intrusion occurs, people don’t always notice it. Places to look in your home are your basement, garage by your hot water heater or a closet that backs up to a bathroom, people don’t check them every day for any problems,” said Craig Herrmann, owner of Mold Eliminators, Mirage Building Maintenance and Construction by Mirage. He is a IICRC Master Certified Flood/Fire & Mold Tech and has been in the business of mold and water damage for over 20 years.

with it. “One thing to do is get an apartment on the top floor since gravity travels down and those below tend to get the damage more,” said Herrmann. However, it is still wise to have any residence checked, whether a single family house or multifamily complex.

There are easy ways to eliminate mold in some situations. When it comes to the bathroom, the fungi can be best removed by simple tile and grout cleaning remover since it is on a tile or a granite surface. The bigger problem is when the fungi are on sheet rock, carpet and wood floors. The most efficient way to spot the outgrowth around the house is simply by identifying the smell of decay and checking all areas of the house frequently, especially after flash floods occur.

Though flash floods are one of the main causes for mold growth, other incidences occur making this a year-round problem. “Las Vegas water supply is heavy on minerals, alkaline and copper pipes that don’t mix. Water flows through copper pipes to our homes which

Despite mold affecting all human beings, it especially targets specific groups. Babies, pregnant women, those who have gone through chemotherapy, the elderly and those with respiratory problems are especially vulnerable. All of these groups have immune systems which have a weakened defense against mold. There are other groups who are targeted more by the fungi as well. Those who live in apartment complexes and multifamily condominiums have a slimmer chance to eliminate mold growth if it has already started before the resident has moved in. Apartment complexes and management companies usually paint over the mold, so it is important to identify the problem as soon as the resident comes in contact

The

of Annual Comprehensive Eye Exams BY DR. CYNTHIA PAYNE

they grow, their vision can change and their prescription will need to be changed as well to help them see and optimally perform.

Annual comprehensive eye exams are also critical for children. Vision must be corrected at an early age for proper vision development and learning. It is estimated that 80 percent of learning is visual for children. As

A comprehensive eye exam assesses vision, binocularity (how well the eyes work together), peripheral vision (side vision), color vision, determines if there is a need for vision correction (eyeglasses or contact lenses) and evaluates the current health of the structures of the eye. While the following list of diseases is by no means comprehensive, it gives some examples of some of the more common diseases diagnosed. Starting at the front, the doctor will look at the eyelids and eyelashes to see if they are clear of bacteria, if the oil glands are secreting properly, and if the lids are positioning properly against the eyeballs and doing a complete blink. The doctor is also looking for any lumps or ulcerations that may need to be investigated further. On the front of the eyeball, the clarity and curvature of the cornea

fter being in practice for 18 years, I sometimes forget that the public still needs to be continually educated on the need to have their eyes checked every year. I have been reminded of this recently. The patient was in for an exam because he failed his vision screening at work. He had not been having annual eye exams and was diagnosed with advanced glaucoma. Treatment of glaucoma is to try and stop the progression of vision loss but nothing will restore the damage that has already been done. This patient lost his job because he could no longer meet the minimum visual requirements necessary for the job. ulten Dye, like many women today, fulfills many roles. She is a successful businesswoman, designer, mother, partner, poet and now innovator of a new business model. Dye continues to transform and reinvent herself. Born and raised in Turkey, Dye was first influenced by the colors, shapes and scents of the Grand Bazaar, fashion houses and boutiques of Istanbul. But she chose a different career path as a nurse living in Turkey. In 1986, she moved with her boyfriend to the Philippines, embracing a culture that was totally different from her past experiences. A year later, they moved to Shreveport, Louisiana, and then to Las Vegas in 1995.

She continued her career in nursing and was promoted to charge nurse. Since Dye was a young mother of two children, she worked three days a week as a nurse and started making jewelry for additional income for her family. Dye loved her career in nursing and wasn’t looking to change her life. “What really captured me were the colors of the stones and the use of precision in creating and designing,” she said. While never doing anything creative before, Dye had cultivated her artistic sense, learning the character and nuance of a wide variety of precious and semi-precious stones. “People wanted to buy my pieces. Within six months (2001), I left nursing and devoted myself to the design of jewelry.” Dye’s first business model was selling her pieces to businesses including Costco at a road show and MGM properties. As she cruised on luxury lines such as Crystal, Regent and Seven Seas, Dye would sell her jewelry. While not celebrity-driven, she also sold pieces to Celine Dion and Rachel Ray. In 2013, Dye decided to open a brickand-mortar store. “Along with my own designs, I wanted to create a make-

your-own jewelry experience. I wanted to include the other arts because I had a lot of friends who were artists.” Her first store included a tea room, art hanging on the wall for sale, books, sculptures and an area filled with beads people could dig through to create their special pieces. Dye would soon find out that most artists are not business people and she decided to step back to create a new business model. While she now has a smaller version of her retail shop located at Grand Bazaar Shops, it is the new model of her business Dye is now most excited about. “I am offering make-your-own-jewelry parties created as an artistic experience where every participant, with our help, creates their own one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry. I have the stones organized, most of the components are set up, and it is more structured. This can be done at a person’s home or in my studio set up for parties.” She is calling it Infinite Connections, which incorporates the jewelry parties as well as selling her designs and pieces to wholesalers and retailers. “I named it that because I believe that we are all connected as human beings and that we are all one. I believe there is one God, one universe, one world. Artistic expression should be from all of us, and this connects us.” Dye has also published several books of poetry. While it was an expression of her experiences, Dye did not plan on being an author. However, after traveling to 20 countries, she realized her poetry could connect the world. According to Dye, jewelry carries an uplifting note in lives, like flowers, poetry and song. “Stones that may take billions of years to create are transformed through our eyes and hands into a beautiful piece of art for a woman’s body. I take what Mother Nature generously created and shape it to complement her most beautiful creation of all: Woman.”

acqueline Beato, in her current position as the senior vice president finance and treasurer at Caesars Entertainment, directly manages an operating expense budget of $120 million and oversees treasury, investor relations and risk management for the corporation that encompasses 52 properties and 60,000 employees worldwide.

Even though her undergraduate degree is in engineering, Beato interviewed with a Wall Street firm for an internship and was accepted. She would discover that her math and modeling skills from engineering would be very valuable to her and would excel in finance. She worked on Wall Street but discovered it was not a good fit for her and decided to attend business school.

As an advocacy for diversity, she moderates a Caesars’ Lean In Circle, an internal peer development program for women that utilizes a 360-degree mentoring circle. Beato founded and serves as chair for Via, a Hispanic affinity business resource group at Caesars that helps drive professional development, community partnerships and positive business outcomes. She is involved in various organizations, such as the Human Rights Campaign, and is outspoken about workforce engagement and equality issues around gender and LGBT rights. Believing in giving back, Beato mentors students in the hospitality program at University of Nevada, Las Vegas. For all of her accomplishments, Beato is in her early 30s.

“I really wanted to work somewhere that I could feel that I was valued as an individual, not just for my professional attributes but as a whole a person. I wanted to work somewhere I could have fun and enjoy myself,” she explained. While attending a career conference, Harrah’s Entertainment (now Caesars Entertainment) had a booth with squishy dice. “After talking with some of the representatives, Beato was blown away when, later, during the interview process, everyone seemed to know her and asked how she was doing.”

Proud of her Hispanic heritage and speaking Spanish fluently, she was inspired by her parents to pursue her goals. “My parents divorced when I was very young, but they both still put the children first. My mother was a single working mom and started her own business. By example, she showed me that women can accomplish the same goals men can. My dad advanced in corporate America by leveraging the fact that he was Hispanic and was able to lead a large sales division for Latin America sales,” she explained. Beato is also grateful to her bosses for their mentorship. “I have been very fortunate in my career to have a strong boss as a mentor starting with my first job. Understanding the value of this, I have always made certain the person I am going to work for will be there to help develop and mentor.”

She would encourage other women to consider entering the field of finance and business because there is so much untapped potential for women to excel in this area. “This is an area that has not traditionally been very diverse, as indicated by studies from past years. There can be very quick gains for women who decide to go into areas that are male-dominated. “Women add a different perspective that makes everybody’s performance that much better—they offer a different way of thinking and much-needed innovation in the field.” Beato sits on the board for Caesars Foundation and Foundation for an Independent Tomorrow, a Nevada nonprofit organization providing vocational training, job preparation, education and employment services to move Nevadans into self-sufficient employment and financial stability. Married with a family of dogs, Beato enjoys salsa dancing and traveling. With all that she has accomplished and is looking forward to, Jacqueline Beato is truly a Fearless Female.

as Vegas is called “The Entertainment Capital of the World,” and Toni Lee is part of that legacy. She is the director of production for On Stage Enterprises, which owns all of the “Legends in Concert” shows nationally including the residency show at the Flamingo Las Vegas. A Las Vegas resident since 1994, Lee has always been a performer and started dancing at the age of 3. “I always wanted to be in show business as a dancer, singer and actress.” As director of production, she oversees all of the shows including lighting, staging, costumes, selection of songs, choreography and other aspects of the production.

Overcoming cancer and inspiring others

She is also a patient of Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada, overcoming cancer and using new technology for her continued good health. Lee was originally diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007 after finding a lump during self-examination at home. “My mother flew here, and along with my best friend and my husband, we were together when I called the doctor. He didn’t want to tell me over the phone, but I told him that I needed to know, and he told me the diagnosis. I was shocked. I thought this would never happen to me. My immediate feeling was that I was going to die, and ‘What am I going to do?’” she explained. Lee and her husband just adopted a new puppy, and she was afraid she would not see the dog grow up. After a sleepless night and getting ready to see the doctor after her diagnosis, Lee decided that she was going to fight for her health and ultimately her life by staying strong and positive. “This is what I have been doing since then.” However, she does admit that the fear never really goes away either. To combat the cancer, she had six rounds of chemotherapy, followed by a

lumpectomy and 36 rounds of radiation treatment. In 2008, she tested positive for the BRCA gene—meaning she inherited mutated genes that make her more likely to develop breast cancer. “I never thought I would have this gene because my mother and grandparents have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart disease,” she explained. “I was working on not being diagnosed with those medical problems and never imagined in a million years I would have the gene because no one else in my family had it.” Ironically, after Lee’s positive test, her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and was also tested for the BRCA gene with a positive result. In October 2008, Lee had a total hysterectomy, and she is currently contemplating a double mastectomy. “This is probably the best thing for me to do. There are days when I am ready to go forward, call the doctor and set a date. Then I back out. It has to be the right time, and I don’t know if it will ever be the right time, but I just can’t do it,” she said. Giving back, Lee raises money for the R.E.D. Rose program, which offers screening and diagnostic mammograms for qualified uninsured or underinsured patients age 49 or younger. Lee volunteers for the Susan G. Komen foundation including public speaking. She is a pacesetter for the American Cancer Society, which means Lee collects over $2,500 in donations a year for research. She sees her breast surgeon, Dr. Josette E. Spotts, and her oncologist, Dr. Mary Ann Allison, regularly to stay on top of the possibility of any cancer returning with mammograms and examinations. She encourages all women to get tested for early detection and be proactive with health. With her spirit, Toni Lee demonstrates that she is a Fearless Female.

H2U Right to you How H2U Health Centers Are Helping Southern Nevadans Get Quality, Personalized Care

B

uilding a healthy community requires access to affordable health care. To support employers in providing quality health care options to their employees and their available dependents, the Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce has introduced Health To You (H2U) Health Centers as a valuable new benefit for members. It’s an easy, affordable and accessible way

for employers to save money on health care expenses and make it easier for employees to stay healthy, happy and productive. At H2U Health Centers, patients receive personalized attention and quality care, spend less time in waiting rooms and save money. Qualified medical practitioners provide care for participants with common illnesses such as allergies, ear infections, strep

throat, minor infections and rashes. Additional services include lab work, flu diagnoses, wellness exams, preventive care, blood pressure checks and chronic condition management—all completed on-site.

For eligi ble employe es and th eir eligible d ependen ts, these ser vices wil l be offered at an affordab le inclus ive per-visit rate.

The H2U Health Center is also stocked with pre-packaged, commonly prescribed generic medications that will be dispensed as needed at no additional charge. If a medication is not available at the H2U Health Center, the practitioners can write a prescription to be filled at the pharmacy of the patient’s choice (some restrictions apply). For eligible employees and their eligible dependents, these services will be offered at an affordable inclusive per-visit rate. All prescribed generic prescriptions, as well as lab work conducted at the center, are built in to the rate, taking the guesswork out of the visit and creating a multifunctional, streamlined and customizable way for employers and employees to take advantage of quality health care. For added convenience, Metro Chamber members also have access through H2U Health Center’s telemedicine program to speak with a U.S.-based, board-certified physician via telephone or video conference 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The centers, conveniently located at Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center, Mountain View Hospital and Southern Hills Hospital & Medical Center, also keep early

and late hours to accommodate different work schedules. In light of the changes to health care and insurance pricing over the last few years, many employers have had to make the difficult decision of choosing higher deductibles with thousands of dollars coming out of pocket for the employee. This benefit is especially attractive to employers with high-deductible or self-funded health plans, or uninsured family members of employees. For a low per employee, per month rate, employees can use this benefit to minimize their out-of-pocket costs, avoiding unpredictable costs subject to the high deductible gap they would normally have to pay for even routine visits. Even better, this benefit is accessible for employers of all sizes. Through flexibility, all-inclusive rates and services and easily accessible locations throughout the Valley, H2U Health Centers are helping to promote healthy habits and a healthy community here in Southern Nevada. For more information on H2U Health Centers and other valuable Metro Chamber membership benefits, as well as to access the brand-new ROI Calculator, visit LVChamber.com.

HELPING YOUR PRACTICE GET TO THE NEXT LEVEL

W

hen researching advertising, many small- to mid-size legal and medical practices are intimidated by the “big business” approach of many agencies. These practices often do not have their own advertising department or a huge marketing budget to spend on retaining a large firm. But there are other choices in the marketplace that can help smaller practices get to the next level in the public relations game. Boutique marketing firms, such as Lippman Media, can offer an alternative to high-priced advertising agencies while providing full-service marketing and public relations support with a personal touch. Developing an advertising campaign seems simple; put some ads in a magazine, or do a couple of commercials or billboards. But marketing your practice should be looked at in the same way as marketing any other household product—building brand consistency and loyalty are the keys to success. According to Glenda Monkarsh, CEO of Lippman Media, “Our firm specializes in developing a comprehensive plan to target your key demographic and focus on the methods that will get the most positive exposure, and bring the highest return on your investment. That is what builds consistency and familiarity.”

to assist with web search optimization, and provides result reporting on lead tracking and other strategies as part of the marketing package.

... building brand consistency and loyalty are the keys to success. Some of the best methods for growing a practice are the personal ones—meet and greets, community events and face-to-face networking. Lippman Media provides support for these as well as represents practices at health fairs, coordinating seminars for patient education, referral programs, door-to-door marketing and event hosting. The personal involvement of the Lippman Media team is what makes them unique.

The team at Lippman Media includes: Glenda Monkarsh, CEO, with 12 years of experience in the marketing field from sales to management. Chloe Prestwich has six years of experience in digital media and SEO strategies. Jennifer Bailey offers a background in journalism and law, as well as 18 years of program management experience. Lippman Media has offices in Las Vegas and Northern California. The Lippman Media team coordinates with a host of other experts in web design, graphic design and online marketing to work with the clients and identify the best solutions to address their specific needs, on their budget. Growing a legal or medical practice without help can be a challenge, and retaining marketing services can be expensive and frustrating. But with support from the expert team at Lippman Media it can be done personally and at the right price. If you are interested in contacting Lippman Media, visit lippmanmedia.com for more information.

Using a boutique firm such as Lippman Media can save money for any practice that wants to advertise. Marketing firms can negotiate lower rates for space in publications, billboards, bus shelters, radio and television air time, passing the savings on to you. Lippman Media looks at what is available in the client’s price range and develops the most effective approach possible. “For example, we found low-cost advertising on the side of prescription bags through a local pharmacy chain for one of our clients. We negotiated with the chain and were able to bring the cost down while providing broad brand exposure,” explained Monkarsh. A growing area that many practices would benefit from is social media, such as Instagram, Facebook or Twitter. generation and most innovative Miata since the first was put on the market in 1990. The lightweight sports car has reached the pinnacle of sleek and speed and has exceeded expectations of Mazda lovers everywhere. Mazda is putting emphasis on the fact that the MX-5 is wider, lower and lighter than the previous two generations of Miatas. The fourthgeneration model weighs around 150 pounds less than the most recent Miata, which puts it closer to the weight of its original and lightest form that was built in the early ’90s. The MX-5 achieves a 25 percent increase in fuel economy in comparison to the 2015 Mazda’s EPA-estimated fuel economy, making it the most efficient roadster of its time. Its tightly sculpted exterior and athletic, sporty look give the car the edge that it needs to complement a woman while promoting class and sophistication. The best part is that this sleek, speedy vehicle gives you everything you need and more

Not only is it lighter and faster than it has been in years, but it is also the safest it has ever been. With rear-wheel drive and near-perfect weight distribution, the push-to-start vehicle is the most modern, secure Miata of its class. Blind spot monitoring and rear crosstraffic alert make a zippy joy ride both pleasurable and protected. Leather seats, a spacious interior, automatic climate control, Bluetooth and hands-free phone and audio settings, and the BOSE surround sound audio system make each ride a pure pleasure. What Want in a Car

T

he auto industry, a traditionally maledominated culture, can often make women feel intimidated, misled and pressured. However, for the first time in history, a Frost & Sullivan report finds that the number of women with driving licenses in the U.S. outnumbers that of men, not just in one of the young age groups, but consistently across all age groups greater than 25. Henderson Hyundai Superstore knows what women care about and caters specifically to them. With 80 percent of car buying decisions now influenced by women, females have more power in the choice of the family vehicle. Approximately 70 percent of U.S. females are dissatisfied with the process of purchasing a car, and about 50 percent are dissatisfied with the car they currently drive. Among millennials, those ages 18 to 34, females are also buying more cars than the number of males altogether. Research also indicates that women prefer small to midsize cars and pay less for their automobiles, as they have a tendency to be more practical than men. As far as the attributes of a car, women are said to favor active safety features over passive ones. Women want to be kept safe in the event of an accident. Meanwhile, men say strong performance and good handling give them the ability to avoid accidents altogether. Most importantly, women want cars to last. They

T

he two legs that form the perfect foundation for building a successful and/or lasting relationship, be it personal or business, are mutual trust and mutual respect. When both parties come together in agreement to base their relationship on mutual trust and respect, it makes a beginning for love, peace and harmony that will last.

Mutual TRUST & RESPECT BY REV. THABITI

If you think about it, love does not really matter as much if it isn’t based on trust and respect. For example, one might say, “It’s not that I don’t love you, because I love you deeply, but if I cannot trust you, then we cannot do this relationship.” Another example one might say is, “How can I believe that you love me when you have no respect for me?” The way to ruin or destroy even the best relationships is when one or both become selfish or reaching a point during the relationship where at least one of them concludes “What matters to me is much more important than what matters to you.” Through mutual trust and mutual respect we can co-create a solid foundation that also makes it easier to apply honest and clear communication for preventing

misunderstandings in the future. Misunderstandings can also ruin some the best relationships, be it family, romantic or business. Chances are we all have past relationships that ended over misunderstanding or the kind of selfishness that said “I matter more than you.” Through mutual trust and mutual respect we naturally make the concerns of others just as equally important as our own. The Laws of Life itself ultimately make us accountable for what we do. We are not responsible if our partner upholds their end or not in the relationship. They will be held accountable even if it means that they end up losing you. Because Life is an innocent mirror reflecting our attitude, perception and belief; anyone with a bad attitude is guaranteed to be miserable. The world is about to become a better place because of all the love you give and for all of good you do today. Reverend Thabiti is a syndicated newspaper columnist and is best known as the world’s most accurate personal forecast expert. For more information, visit ThePower.org.

FallingFOR FALL Y

ou can tell when it’s fall in Las Vegas. The daytime temperature begins to cool down, you don’t need the air conditioner on at night, and best of all, there are so many fun ways to enjoy the months before the chaos of the holidays! From food to fun activities, I love the fall!

I have a confession...Although I try to eat healthy; fall is the time I indulge. I can sum it up in two words: pumpkin everything! I like it all: pumpkin soup, pumpkin pie, pumpkin added to a salad and, of course, a pumpkin latte (nonfat of course, let’s not go crazy here). There are a lot of

healthy recipes you can enjoy that feature vitamin-packed pumpkins but my rule is, don’t stress if it’s a bit calorie heavy. Nine months of the year you can go pumpkin free so enjoy it now—it’s the flavor of the season! The weather in Las Vegas in the fall is simply amazing. Now is the time to go for long walks outdoors, explore Mt. Charleston and take advantage of Red Rock cooling down. I love to take my dogs out to Tule Springs. It’s about taking advantage of those hidden treasure of Las Vegas. When you get home and it starts to get a little chilly at night, why not have a hot chocolate out on

the porch sitting under a fleece blanket while reading a great book. For me that means the timeless Agatha Christie.

Fall also is a great time of year to get creative with the kids. Work on a homemade Halloween costume, bake and decorate with pumpkins (here comes that pumpkin again!), create projects using fall leaves (hello Pinterest!), sit arounda fire pit and tell ghost stories. The bottom line—the next three months are the perfect time to enjoy the weather, your family and a couple pumpkin martinis. Yep, they really do exist!

BY DEBBIE HALL

Walk us through a typical day in your shoes. Andrew Tierney: I usually get up with my wife Heather around 6:30 a.m. and do some cardio workout—we love training together. I make a few business calls and set up my thoughts for any meetings we might have planned for that afternoon. I usually head into the showroom with the other guys for a few hours before we sound check every day at 5:45 p.m. I get ready and perform to an amazing audience and I’m usually back home by about 10 p.m. to wind down.

Have you ever purchased any As Seen on TV items? Mike Tierney: Yes I got the Total Pillow for traveling, it’s a round neck pillow, shaped like a donut, you can mold it into whatever shape is most comfortable and it actually works great on a plane.

If you could destroy a grade-school photo of yourself, what year would it be and why? Toby Allen: I would destroy all of them. I had a massive head and an even larger head of hair which my mum insisted on cutting herself. It was a whole lot of brown wavy mop sitting up there. Coupled with my large front two teeth, I was quite a sight!

4

While grocery shopping, what is your stick-in-the-cartwhen-no-one-is-looking item?

5

If we were to look through your device, what is on your hit list or playlist or favorite app?

Phil Burton: I’m a total sucker for the little displays of chocolate they put at the counter at Whole Foods. They always have something exotic that I just have to try. The fact that the chocolates are usually only bite-sized also means the guilt factor isn’t too heavy.

Toby Allen: One app that you’ll find being used a lot on my phone lately is Hue Disco. I have some of the Philips Hue lights that changes color. Hue Disco does exactly what it suggests and turns the lights into party time mode. My kids love their little discos in their room dancing like crazy as the lights do the same.

Do you ever play “tourist” in Vegas? If so, what is your favorite thing to do? Mike Tierney: I always love taking people up to Mt Charleston for lunch, it’s a very un-Vegas place to go and people are always surprised that it’s so close to the Strip. It’s a nice place to beat the heat in summer and see some snow in the winter time.

What do you do to unwind and relax? Andrew Tierney: To unwind and relax, I love either watching TV or playing the piano and noodling around with song ideas. I also relax just chatting with my wife Heather about things. She is my rock and has all the common sense I seemed to have missed out on so she comes in very handy!!

Does anyone ever mistake you for someone else? Phil Burton: All the time. I have audience members come up and tell me of my resemblance to a different person every night; a young Tommy Lee Jones to Dan Aykroyd. The most common ones are Mark or Donnie Wahlberg, or (for the Aussie readers) Jimmy Barnes. Human Nature: The Motown Show is celebrating six years performing The Sands Showroom at The Venetian. The show is performed Tuesday through Saturday (dark Sunday and Monday) at 7 p.m. For the VIP experience, guests will be brought into The Sands Showroom and will watch the guys and band sound check and get ready for the show. There is a meet and greet, an autographed program and early seating for the show. For more information, visit humannaturelive.com or call 702.414.9000.
