Oil leak still a mystery EPA investigates business trio By Tristan O’Kane

tristan.o@lvvoice.com.au

THE Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is investigating three local businesses as the possible source of an oil leak at Kernot Hall Lake in Morwell and has warned that the responsible body may be shut down. An EPA spokeswoman said Energy Brix, SP AusNet and Mecrus were being investigated, but that it could take some time to discover the source.

“The oil could be coming from anywhere,” spokeswoman Kate Gittings said. “Once we find the source, the company may have to be closed down but it is not what we are doing at the moment.” Passers-by reported an “oily sheen” on the lake’s surface last Thursday. The EPA was then contacted and proceeded to investigate. A representative from SP

AusNet in Melbourne, Joe Adamo told the Voice: “Our guys are investigating in Morwell. They are looking at the transformers. They are checking for any unusual occurrences or problems from storm activity.” When asked if there had been problems in the past, Mr Adamo replied that there were none that he knew of. Ms Gittings said the EPA was working to minimise the environmental impact of the leak.

“We have installed absorbent booms and taken finger print samples to try and locate the source,” she said. Ms Gittings reiterated that the EPA was looking at all potential sources as quickly as possible in order to minimise the environmental impact. Contacts from Mecrus and Energy Brix were unavailable for comment at the time of going to print.
