THE energy market operator has highlighted risks to the state’s peak summer energy supply if there is further damage to the Morwell River Diversion at the Yallourn mine. The Australian Electricity Market Operator’s Electricity Statement of Opportunities forecasts supply and reliability standards for the next five years across the National Electricity Market AEMO did not forecast any supply

shortfalls this summer or into the next five years, but acknowledged the importance of protecting Yallourn to assure system security. The positive outlook was due to 4.4 gigawatts of new generation and storage capacity coming online with more investments in renewables, batteries, gas and pumped hydro. “A key risk to reliability remains the possible unavailability of Yallourn Power Station in the event of a catastrophic rainfall event,” the report said.

“While the likelihood of such an event is relatively low, the consequence could be significant if the risk is not mitigated.” The report stated future flooding could keep the “entire power station out of service for 12-to-18 months”. It found between 150,000 and 500,000 households could go without power for up to eight hours in extreme heat at least once this summer, if such an event was to occur. June flooding caused cracking in

the Morwell River Diversion which triggered parts of the mine to be temporarily evacuated and coal production put on hold. It was the second time the diversion had cracked after a similar incident occurred in 2012. Environment groups have now called upon the state government to conduct an independent investigation into these diversion failures. Continued on page 5

GIPPSLAND Region Public Health Unit (GRPHU) acting operations manager Franca Di Sisto assured the community there is no further risk to public health after a Traralgon resident tested positive for COVID-19 over the weekend. Ms Di Sisto said no additional cases had been identified. “There’s been no additional cases identified within the region at this point in time,” she said. “We were able to get onto this very quickly and we have a degree of assurance at this point in time that the community is safe and there is no further risk to public health.” The positive case acquired the virus at a Melbourne funeral before regional Victoria entered its seventh lockdown. Ms Di Sisto said the person had not broken any rules by attending the event. “The case is linked to a known cluster in Melbourne, there were no breaches in respect to no breaking of rules, this individual’s acquisition was quite unfortunate but they did not break any rules,” she said. “Upon case interview we know this individual did their best to try and adhere to the parameters currently in place.” One primary close contact had been identified but was also isolating and “does not pose a risk to public health”. Within 24 hours of the positive case being confirmed, GRPHU’s testing sites had completed more than 400 tests at their Traralgon testing locations. Ms Di Sisto thanked the community and urged those with symptoms to get tested. “We want to really thank the community for stepping up and being tested, we do also want to remind people that if you are unwell, even if you haven’t been to an exposure site please step forward and be tested,” she said. Ms Di Sisto also stressed the importance of people getting vaccinated. Continued on page 3
