Free Career Help at Your Library Thanks to the growing partnership between Workforce Connections’ One-Stop Career Centers and the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District, local residents are gaining convenient access to our many services. The Library District currently donates more than 2,500 square feet of space within its libraries to host five One-Stop Career Centers, including the newest one, located inside the state-of-the-art East Las Vegas Library (see inset for locations). This expanding network of One-Stop Career Centers is staffed with professional career coaches offering a wide array of employment and training services.

Navigating you through the best of our library collection, via the recommendations of one very opinionated librarian. By Rebecca Colbert Head of Collection and Bibliographic Services @ The Library District
wan·der·lust noun /ˈwändərˌləst/ a strong, innate desire to rove or travel about. Here is my personal definition: To go where imagination takes me, to slip the surly bonds of my cubicle. In fact, wanderlust is exactly what I feel every minute, from spring to fall. If you’re like me, setting off on a world tour isn’t quite possible at the moment, but reading travel memoirs and watching travel TV shows help appease those itchy feet. In fact, sometimes, they can be so engrossing, I feel like I’ve been transported through time and space on a great adventure. So come with me and let’s take a spin through our extensive collection of travel memoirs, from the unforgettable classics to hot off the presses titles that will have you turning up the A/C. 6

Europe Calling I have always been an avid non-fiction reader, but 15 years ago, as I was hosting my first book club meeting, I was a little nervous and unsure about what kind of crowd would show up. I decided that something a tad lighter, enjoyable, even a bit humorous would give everyone something to love, and I found it in Peter Mayle’s “A Year in Provence.” This wistful, funny, and well-written memoir is just one of many Provence stories that he has penned (all of which are recommended to continue savoring this beautiful countryside). You will smell the butter, wine, and truffles simmering in a pan in this delightful narrative, which walks you through the experiences shared by Mayle and his wife as they fix up their house and get to know the locals. Any book that touches on travel in Italy must include the sumptuous food that is ingrained in the culture.
If you’re also craving a little romance and self-discovery, then “Eat, Pray, Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert will hit the spot. Gilbert’s trek across Italy, India, and Indonesia will leave you laughing and longing to follow her path toward great food, spiritual enlightenment, and unexpected human connections. One reviewer called it, “a transcendently great beach book.”
back to the library for Cheryl Strayed’s “Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail.” This New York Times Best Seller is part trail memoir, part biography (as the best travel stories are), part personal awakening. After a series of devastating losses, Strayed sets out on a journey of the self and learns about the healing power of wandering the woodlands.
The Wilderness Calls
But wait, there’s more! My favorite new memoir is not so much about travel (though there is a great deal of it) but rather about settling down in one place. Pam Houston’s “Deep Creek: Finding Hope in the High Country” is a love letter to the Colorado Rockies. It reinforces the value of place in our lives and makes a poignant argument for our connection to the natural world. I was constantly reminded of Strayed’s book while reading Houston’s and I think they work well as bookends on the theme.
The wanderlust theme worked so well back then that I revisited it recently with a new book group. For this group, I chose “A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail” by Bill Bryson. This one is a hoot, with two old friends set out to conquer the famous trail, against obviously long odds. Enjoy the ride, then follow your compass straight to REI to grab some gear and plan your own wilderness hike. Or, you could skip the blisters and sunburn and head

More recent travel classics include “To Shake the Sleeping Self: A Journey from Oregon to Patagonia, and a Quest for A Life With No Regret” by Instagram personality and Wilderness magazine editor Jedidiah Jenkins. As he grapples with what it means to be an adult, his sexual identity in the context of a conservative religious upbringing, and how travel can jolt you fully awake in your own life, you’ll find yourself swept up in this unflinchingly honest, magical, and inspiring tale.
Global Wandering In the mood for an 80s flashback? If you ever wondered what happened to Brat Pack member Andrew McCarthy after starring in popular teen flicks, he grew up to become editor-at-large for National Geographic Traveler magazine. You can follow one of his amazing journeys in “The Longest Way Home: One Man’s Quest for the Courage to Settle Down.”
There are other terrains and cultures to explore and Mark Adams’ “Tip of the Iceberg: My 3,000-Mile Journey Around Wild Alaska, the Last Great American Frontier” combines history, humor, and one thrilling read. Thanks to Adams, Alaska is now officially on my bucket list. Skipping across the globe to an ancient trade route that linked China with early western civilizations, this is the setting for “Lands of Lost Borders: A Journey on the Silk Road” by Kate Harris. A travel memoir about a long bike ride along this still untamed route, she describes her motivation as, “that basic longing to figure out what in the universe we’re all doing here.” My list wouldn’t be complete without two classic travel guides. “1,000 Places to See Before You Die” by Patricia Schultz leaves barely a country or continent untouched in her encyclopedia of wonders from around
the world, both man-made and naturally formed. From the French Quarter in New Orleans, Japan’s Sapporo Snow Festival, Chile’s lush wine region, and Belize’s Barrier Reef, to Midsummer Eve in Sweden, the Dead Sea in Israel, Calcutta’s Marble Palace, and of course, heli-skiing in British Columbia, you’ll want to start squirreling away those frequent flyer miles to experience these world wonders. Another great slice of travel pie is Lonely Planet’s “Where To Go When: The Ultimate Trip Planner for Every Month of the Year.” Otherwise known as the backpacker’s guide to budget travel, it is well known for sniffing out bargains on a shoestring.
Must-See TV Good travel writers know that, rather than adventure, what they truly seek is themselves, and you would have been hard-pressed to find anyone more in love with that process than the late chef,

author, TV personality, and man of the world, Anthony Bourdain. In his beloved original Travel Channel series “Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations,” he took the road less traveled to surprise, to delight, and to force his viewers to be a little less afraid of the unknown. He was no tourist, just a genuine traveler and connoisseur, and not just of the palate, but of the people and remote cultures that he passionately pursued. He asked questions while he ate their delicacies, and honored their traditions and beliefs. I hope you will enjoy the entire series “Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations,” which is available from the library on DVD. I guarantee you will be left riveted — and hungry — by the experience. Folias Duo Celebrates Nature Through Flute and Guitar As you listen to the flute and guitar of Folias Duo, it’s easy to imagine yourself in the great outdoors, with the sounds of whispering wind softly blowing and water streaming gently by you. Andrew Bergeron and Carmen Maret celebrate the serenity of nature and draw heavily on its influences to inspire their music — which also incorporates classical, South American folk, tango, jazz, and world music styles. This talented husband-and-wife team has performed as Folias Duo throughout the United States, Europe, and South America, exploring and enjoying the outdoors during their travels in between shows. Luckily for us, their summer plans include three concerts with the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District. Andrew and Carmen are not only musicians (he plays the guitar, she plays the flute), but composers, and even tango dancers. The pair has performed together since 2002 and taught musicality classes — specializing in tango — since 2003. They have released six studio albums under their own record label and publishing company, Folias Music. 10

While they call Grand Rapids, Michigan, home, Folias Duo is frequently in demand and on the move, having played 26 shows across 13 states last summer (including popular visits to our own Clark County and Mesquite Libraries). During that time, they also wrote new music, following their tradition of completing a “composing residency” at a cabin in Colorado’s rural La Garita mountains. (Remember how their music transports you to the wonders of nature? That’s by design!) The couple’s love for music and nature is well documented on their website, FoliasMusic.com. Their blogs chronicle their travels, and videos capture the stunning locales they’ve visited while on tour. But Nevada continues to be a favorite location, drawing them back year after year. In fact, their performance of “Los Hermanos,” written by Argentine folk artist Atahualpa Yupanqui, was recorded in Southern Nevada’s Valley of Fire State Park! If you’re looking to decompress from the stress of city life, the soothing music of Folias Duo is just the ticket. Where will their musical journey take you?

Saxsation with Sid the Kid Catch His Smooth Saxophone Groove
If you’re a fan of live jazz in Las Vegas, odds are you’ve been wowed by Sid the Kid’s mad sax at clubs and casinos around the valley. A regular at the legendary Tap House, Sid’s smooth style speaks to a long career playing backup for Gladys Knight, The Platters, and other A-listers. Sid is known for his tributes to the greats, such as Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Grover Washington Jr., and more. He is also an accomplished composer in his own right, with an album of original work, “The Basics of Love” on Solo Records. This summer, Sid returns to the Summerlin Library & Performing Arts Center for a concert of original music and famous favorites. Born Sidney Lavel Smith in Alexandria, Louisiana, Sid’s music career developed at an early age. By the age of ten, he was fashioning musical instruments out of household objects to “play” along to songs by his early saxophone heroes Lou Donaldson and King
Curtis. In seventh grade, he officially picked up the sax for his school band, and by age sixteen, he was gigging in nightclubs. After high school, he became an Army man, and his music and military service have taken him all over the world. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in music performance from the esteemed Berklee College of Music in Boston, and later received his Master of Arts in music from UNLV. His group, the Sid the Kid Quartet, has toured Europe, and as a composer — besides original jazz compositions — he has written music for video games, musicals, and served as a music director for TV shows. Don’t miss this Las Vegas legend as he slays that sound with a concert full of sax-sational tunes you'll love.

The Hypnotiques Play It Cool with a Jazzy Hawaiian Vibe
The Hypnotiques deliver music true to their name — songs made popular throughout the 1920s-1960s, but with their own rhythmic spin. (You have to hear their cover of the original Hawaii 5-0 theme song!)
Singer, ukulele player, and bandleader Kitty Chow hails from Kona, Hawaii, and whisks you away with her sultry voice. Canadianborn Bettina May, the band’s drummer, brings sexy back by dancing and singing at times behind her drum kit.
This boss quartet blends Hawaiian, exotica, jazz, and other music styles for a performance that sounds like a vacation feels. Just in time for the high heat of summer, The Hypnotiques will be playing it cool at their only Library District concert in July.
And here’s a fun fact: Kitty and Bettina are both accomplished burlesque performers. Kitty’s performances at Fisherman’s Famous San Francisco Burlesque put her in the elite echelon of the burlesque firmament; and Bettina’s talents as an iconic pin-up model and burlesque talent have been covered by The New York Times, New York Daily News, Toronto Star, and the UK Daily Mail.
Together, they’re bringing retro back to Sin City, but each member of The Hypnotiques is impressively talented in their own right. Guitarist Brent Paul has performed locally with CSN’s music ensembles, and in Honolulu, Hawaii, he accompanied ukulele virtuoso Taimane Gardner. Bassist Robert John Kley — whose accomplishments include rocking Ozzfest as a member of hard rock band Magna-Fi — is also a famed photographer and videographer. 12

The Return of Harry and the Potters Bring the House Down with Wizarding Rock “This band plays songs about books,” reads the official bio for Harry and the Potters, which is kind of an understatement. This high energy duo, comprised of brothers Joe and Paul DeGeorge, is recognized as a pioneer of the wildly popular “wizard rock” genre — music inspired by the books of J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” series.

“When I first read [the Harry Potter books], I was really drawn to Harry’s antiauthoritarian streak and his bravery,” Paul told Rolling Stone in 2018. “His attitude was similar to a lot of my rock & roll heroes — like Bruce Springsteen and Fugazi — and I thought it would be cool if Harry started his own scrappy punk rock band.”
“Lots of young folks will hear us for the first time during a gig at their local library,” Paul said to Rolling Stone. “Hopefully we create something that will still hold value for them when they’re older.”
Formed in 2002 in the suburbs of Boston, Harry and the Potters’ songs are written from Harry’s perspective, walking with him through his magical journey from childhood to young adulthood. The group has performed more than 800 shows, and in 2005, Pitchfork ranked the group’s performance at the New York Public
“Two young brothers, dressed up like pop culture’s most famous adolescent wizard, simultaneously spread the gospels of DIY synth-garage-punk and the Order of the Phoenix,” wrote the magazine.
With song titles such as “Save Ginny Weasley” and “In Which Draco Malfoy Cries Like a Baby,” Harry and the Potters’ music is sure to be enjoyed by fans of The Boy Who Lived, and those who just want to sing along to some fun tunes.

If you consume news online, you’ve no doubt encountered this frustrating scenario: you’re scrolling through your news feed when a headline catches your attention. You click the link, the webpage begins to load, and then, before your eyes reach the first word of the article, a pop-up window appears with an invitation to pay up or miss out. “You’ve reached your article limit for this month,” it informs you. “Subscribe now for unlimited access.” This is where your LVCCLD library card comes to the rescue! Your library card offers you free unlimited access to thousands of publications online, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the Los Angeles Times. No subscription necessary. You can find a simplified list of eResources you’ll use to access these titles on our website, LVCCLD.org. Click eResources from the blue drop-down menu, then click on Magazines & Newspapers. Not only is our website an easy way to obtain your favorite news sources, think of the money you’ll save! So let’s say you’re a fan of The New York Times. Their website allows you to view a very limited number of articles per month. A basic digital subscription to The New York Times costs $16 a month, or $192 a year, but now you can put that money in your summer travel fund by signing in first through LVCCLD.org — from inside or outside of our libraries. Creating a nytimes.com account with your library card account enables you total access to news stories, multimedia content, and more (everything but the crossword puzzle).
