ATTENTION!!!!! IMPORTANT!!!! It’s Time to File Your 2012-2013 FAFSA for Financial Assistance
The preferred date to file your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is February 1 for Undergraduate students and March 1 for Graduate and Doctoral students. Remember, students who want to be considered for need-based and Florida state financial aid, such as the Federal Pell Grant, the Subsidized Federal Stafford Loan, University of Miami Grants, Florida Bright Futures, Florida Resident Access Grant, and Florida Student Assistance Grant opportunities must apply every year. Students applying after the preferred date will be awarded on a funds available basis. The easiest way to complete your FAFSA is through FAFSA on the Web at http://www. fafsa.gov/. You will need to have your Personal Identification Number (PIN) ready to sign the FAFSA when you complete it. If you have forgotten your PIN you can request or create a new one at www.pin.ed.gov.
Senior Mwambo
The Senior Mwambo is an African rite of passage ceremony that marks the transition of black graduates from their lives at the University of Miami to advanced education and professional careers. This ceremony was established in 1992 through the vision and love of a very dynamic and caring international student from Malawi, East Africa; Mr. Patrick A. Masala. The term “Mwambo” literally means ceremonial rite of passage. It is Chichewa and comes to us from Malawi, East Africa where it was founded. The Senior Mwambo is an African rite of passage ceremony designed to recognize the accomplishments of our black graduates and their families. It is a celebration of the transition from one stage of life to the next. This year’s ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 2:00pm in Gusman Hall. Health, Fitness and Fun! 3-Point Shooting Contest Slam-dunk your way into next semester with a 3-point shooting contest the week of February 6 at the Herbert Wellness Center. BLS for Healthcare Providers The Basic Life Support class for healthcare providers covers core material such as adult and infant CPR (including two-rescuers scenario and use of the bag mask), foreign-body airway obstruction and automated external defibrillation (AED). This course is for healthcare providers such as EMS personnel, physician assistants, doctors, dentists, nurses, and respiratory therapists who must have a card documenting successful completion of a CPR course. The class is Monday, February 13, from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The cost is $45 for student members, $55 for non-student members and $65 for non-members. Louisiana and Cajun Cooking Class Bourbon Street may have some fancy restaurants but the Herbert Wellness Center has Chef Mercedes! And she is going to bring Cajun cooking to the instructional kitchen on Wednesday, February 29, 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Participants will learn how to prepare shrimp creole, chicken jambalaya, dirty rice, and bread pudding soufflé with bourbon sauce. The cost is only $20 for UM students and Wellness Center members; $25 for non-members. The fee includes cooking demonstration, recipes, and food tasting. Good for You Comfort Food Cooking Class Everyone has a “comfort” food that not only feeds the body but also the soul. Chef Mercedes is going to demonstrate how to prepare some of her favorites. Heart Saver CPR with AED Heart Saver CPR with AED teaches CPR and relief of choking in adults, children, and infants, as well as use of barrier devices for all ages. Optional: infant CPR and choking; adult, child, and infant CPR with mask. Participants will also learn how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). The class is Thursday, February 16, from noon to 2 p.m. The cost is $30 for student members, $35 for non-student members and $40 for non-members. Tunnel is April 16-18th
Tunnel of Oppression is a sensory based experience that exposes students to various issues of oppression in society today. The UC Ballrooms are divided into different rooms each dealing with a specific issue. In past years, issues such as Religion, Sexual Assault, Disabilities Issues, Education, and LGBTQ among others have been covered. Last year 552 students went through Tunnel of Oppression, and over 50 volunteers and10 student organizations helped make the event a success. This year we want Tunnel to be better than ever!! If your organization or you as an individual are interested in helping plan and create a room in this year’s Tunnel of Oppression please attend an info session to learn how to get involved!!

Scholarship, Internship & Fellowship Opportunities IU Simon Cancer Center’s summer program available to underrepresented populations Deadline is Februray 17; program is May 31-July 27, 2012
INDIANAPOLIS -- (December 7, 2011) -- High school and college students from underrepresented populations interested in cancer research careers can gain hands-on experiences during next summer’s Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center Summer Research Program. The cancer center’s annual Summer Research Program, held in partnership with the Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) Center for Research and Learning, places students with a mentor physician or researcher for nine weeks (May 31July 27) on the IUPUI campus. Students work with faculty who are conducting studies in the most progressive areas of cancer research. The program’s primary goal is to increase the number of underrepresented populations engaged in basic, clinical, and prevention and control cancer research by providing positive and meaningful firsthand exposure to those fields. Each student receives a stipend (payment) of $3,200. Students are responsible for their own housing arrangements. The Summer Research Program provides students an opportunity to: • interact with any one of five cancer center research programs, 10 shared facilities and more than 100 world-renowned investigators • gain exposure to a wide-range of basic science, translational, and clinical research activities • continually interact with and learn from other students, clinical and post-doctoral fellows, and faculty • attend weekly workshops that deal with issues related to gaining admission to graduate and professional programs of study Students are selected on interest in biomedical or behavioral science, grades, and personal interviews. High school students who participate must have completed at least their junior year and have maintained a grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Undergraduates in the program must have completed 24 hours of college credit, be majoring in a biomedical or behavioral science, and have maintained a grade point average of at least 3.2. 2012 Sherry R. Arnstein Minority Student Scholarship
Deadline: Entries must be post-marked by March 31, 2012 This award, named after former AACOM Executive Director Sherry R. Arnstein, recognizes two osteopathic underrepresented minority students at AACOM’s member colleges of osteopathic medicine (one newly accepted student and one continuing student). To be eligible, an applicant must be an underrepresented minority (AfricanAmerican; Native American, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian; mainland Puerto Rican, or Hispanic) student in good academic standing and currently enrolled in his or her first, second, or third year at an AACOM member college of osteopathic medicine OR an underrepresented minority student who has been accepted and is planning to matriculate at one of the AACOM member colleges. Previous Arnstein Scholarship awardees are ineligible. All entries must include the required Cover Page, with all appropriate signatures, in addition to the required essay. Tisdale Fellowship Deadline: February 15th Technology and Policy Internship
The Eben Tisdale Fellowship, which includes a $5,000 grant, is a summer internship available to undergraduate and graduate students where the high-tech sector meets the government. The program offers outstanding opportunities for students to learn about technology and public policy issues with hands-on experience in Washington, D.C. Tisdale Fellowships are open to students from colleges and universities all over the country. The Dell Thurmond Woodard Fellowship, which includes one $5,000 grant for one student each year, is part of the Tisdale Fellowship program. Any undergraduate or graduate student, who is interested in diversity and ethics issues, and in learning about high-tech public policy issues, may apply for this Fellowship. The application for both of these Fellowships is the same, except that those applying for the Dell Thurmond Woodard Fellowship are required to submit an additional essay on diversity and ethics. The Fellowship has two main elements: (1) Internship: Fellows participate a nine-week internship in the government relations office of a leading high technology company or association. In the recent past, fellows have interned at such companies as Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Philips Electronics and Monster Worldwide, as well as trade associations such as the Business Software Alliance or TechAmerica. 2) Issues Seminar: The issues seminar is a weekly lunch hosted by the different sponsoring companies and associations. Expert speakers lead discussions of current public policy issues in Washington, and the methods the high technology industry uses for effective advocacy. The Summer 2012 Fellowship runs from June 18th – August 10th, 2012. The goal of the Fellowship is to create a supportive and collegial environment in which a new class of public policy professionals will be mentored to help ensure that the high-tech industry continues to have highly capable and well-trained individuals in both policy advocacy and senior management positions. CAPAL Federal Internships (10+ Placements) and Scholarships (3 awards) for Public Service Deadline: March 9, 2012
The Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership (CAPAL) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, nonpartisan educational and professional organization dedicated to building leadership and public policy knowledge within the Asian Pacific American (APA) community. Its mission is to promote Asian Pacific American interests and success in public service careers, to provide information and education on policy issues affecting the APA community, and to serve the APA community at large.
Internship Opportunities:
Each summer, CAPAL places over 10 summer interns in the federal government. These internship positions are open to ALL MAJORS, and are suited for individuals looking to gain real-world federal government experience. CAPAL has partnerships with federal agencies including Agricultural Research Services, Forest Service, and Rural Development. Each CAPAL intern will be awarded a $2,000 stipend to support the successful completion of his/her internship. Up to $500 travel stipends are available. Depending on interests and placement, duties could vary from policy or scientific research, project coordination and management, business, law, communication, and more. Applicants are asked to specify their preferences on the application, and those selected will be placed based on their interests and skills. Agricultural knowledge is not required.
