Javicia Leslie

Movie and Television Actress Meet Javicia Leslie, television and movie actress who has achieved success and fame through hard work and passion.

W

hat is one of your favorite things about being an actress?

Who or what inspires you to chase your dreams?

I love being able to be anything I want! When I was growing up, I wanted to be so many things. I wanted to be a teacher, a lawyer, an actress, a writer, and so much more! As an actress, I am able to play all of those things! It’s so much fun!

I am inspired by little brown girls who are seeing me as a representation! When I was growing up, I didn’t see faces like mine on the tv often. I am constantly reminding myself to be that example for little girls, to see that they can be whatever they want!

Issue 9 | 13

"I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO ACT SINCE I WAS A CHILD. I’D PUT ON PLAYS AND INVITE FAMILY MEMBERS TO BE MY AUDIENCE."

Why did you decide to start your acting career? I’ve always wanted to act since I was a child. I’d put on plays and invite family members to be my audience. For me, the decision came when I decided to start walking in my purpose... when I decided to let go of fear! What is your dreamlevel goal for your career? There isn’t one goal, I have so many! I want to act along side the greats, I want to direct, produce, and create projects that tell untold stories.

You have been busy! 2018 is a good year! You have several projects in the works. You landed a role on a CBS series called "God Friended Me." Tell us more. I play Ali Finer on God Friended Me. I’m getting my PhD in psychology while working at a local bar. I’m the voice of reason amongst the group. More importantly, I’m a bridge between my atheist brother, and reverend father... constantly reminding them that family comes first! Personally, I’m trying to figure things out in my own relationship. I just moved in with my girlfriend, and I’m not sure if it’s the best decision. I am also a series regular on a BET show called The Family Business. On that show, I play Paris Duncan, the youngest daughter of a major crime boss. I’m the opposite of Ali in this project. I’m trained to seduce and kill. I tend to get in a lot of trouble with my spoiled ways. However, like Ali, family comes first! When our family goes to war with the rival family, I am sent on a mission to save my twin brother. This show is action packed! Talk us through what your typical day looks like. Right now I am filming two shows on two different coasts. I shoot GFM in New York. When I’m in NY, I wake up around 4am, get ready for the day, the car comes around 5 and takes my dog and I (who goes EVERYWHERE with me) to the studio! I go through hair and make up, which I tend to make a karaoke session with the ladies, have my mint tea, then get ready for the scenes. After work, I go home, workout, and catch up on all of my favorite shows! On my off days, I fly to Los Angeles where I film Family Business. Those days are pretty much the same process as the NY ones. When I’m not at work, my favorite thing to do is eat! Lol. The best part about being in these two amazing cities, is all of the different kinds of foods. I also love to workout. I usually do a daily bootcamp that involves lots of cardio and body weight exercises. I like to top that workout with a few heavy weight sessions in the gym. Through all of this, my dog/BFF is right by my side! He’s a rescue named Judah. He’s part pit and part boxer. Such a cutie!

What is your brand mission? I want to provide entertainment! I want to ultimately tell untold stories through acting, directing, and producing. I believe film and television creates our belief in what history really is... I want to be apart of that story! All of this, while showing little girls that they can be whatever they want! What's next for your career? Whenever I get a break, the director for my show The Family Business is going to allow me to shadow him. Directing is something that I am soooo excited about!

What is your favorite experience in your career to date? I love that I’ve had the opportunity to work with such wonderful people. I’ve had some of the best tv parents, and I’ve learned something from each of them. Keesha Sharp (Killer Coach) taught me the power of subtlety in my scenes. Sheryl Lee Ralph (Mac Gyver) reminds me of the power of the theater, she’s epic to watch in person. Ernie Hudson (Family Business) lets me know that no matter how serious the role is, you should always enjoy yourself in this process. Joe Morton (God Friended Me) teaches me to never stop learning about your role, your craft, and your environment! What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out? Never stop learning!!! Sometimes we put our classes on the back burner. Don’t do it!!! You should constantly be learning about your craft... never stop!

List the 5 things you need to have with you on a film set. 1.) My dog, Judah 2.) Hot mint tea 3.) My phone (I like to sing before I work, it loosens my vocal chords) 4.) Comfortable clothes between takes 5.) A fun crew! Do you have any upcoming projects that we haven’t mentioned? God Friended Me The Family Business (Tuesday’s on BET at 9/8 c) I have two shorts in film festivals right now. Stuck, which is a romantic comedy about two people who are physically stuck together after a one night stand. Pas Honteux, French style film about a young man learning to finally be a man.

BLOGGER INSPOÂ MATILDA DJERF SWEDISH INFLUENCER/MODEL

LIZZIE DARDEN

Creative Director | Photographer | Content Creator By: Lori Granded

H

ow would you describe your Instagram feed? Whimsical, bright, pun-heavy + surreal imagery with hints of glamour and polish. What do you love most about being a content creator? I feel so lucky to have a creative outlet where I can express all my weird ideas and call it my job. What do you think your fans and followers love most about you? I share a lot of behind the scenes and my editing and shooting process. People have told me they find it really helpful and educational, and some have decided to go into a photography or design field because of my work, which is the highest compliment to me! I've always strived to be open and candid about my work and the industry because I feel there's so much mystery surrounding content creation as a whole. It can be very intimidating for creatives who want to break into the field and I'd rather have them feel welcomed. Issue 9 | 23

"I feel so lucky to have a creative outlet where I can express all my weird ideas and call it my job."

Why do you think it's important to connect with other influencers and content creators? Collaboration opens your eyes to different ways of thinking about things, which is always great. Connecting with other influencer friends has also been extremely beneficial for me in terms of sharing business advice, trading tips and tricks we've picked up, and just having someone to vent to who understands the industry and day-to-day more than say a friend who works in accounting or something unrelated.

Issue 9 | 24

"I'm pretty bubbly and goofy but also highly type-A and perfectionist about certain things!"

How would you describe yourself to people who don't know you? I'm pretty bubbly and goofy but also highly type-A and perfectionist about certain things! I love to joke around and be sarcastic and not take things too seriously unless I absolutely must. What does your current business model look like? I work by myself in my home studio, which is two rooms of my house that I've converted into a shooting/crafting/prop hoarding space. My business manager, new to me as of a few months ago and so helpful, works remotely and handles all of my client inquiries and scheduling. If I have an exceptionally large or overwhelming shoot, like something that requires a lot of prop-building, I sometimes bring in my boyfriend or a friend or two to help out.

Issue 9 | 25

Talk us through what your typical day looks like.

What's next for your business?

I usually brainstorm in the morning when I first wake up and go for a run since I feel most clearheaded then. Next I tackle emails and any paperwork to get the stiffer work out of the way. Then, depending on what I'm working on, I either go shopping/scouting for props or build and prep props (I go through a lot of spray paint and hot glue!) I usually shoot around 12 in the afternoon and then wrap up edits until around 6 or 7 at night.Â

No clue! I'm down for the ride, whatever it is!

What do you want your brand to ultimately be and do for others? I would love to inspire younger people to get into the arts. I was lucky enough to have a mother who shared my appreciation for creative fields and always encouraged me to pursue it as a career if that's what I wanted, but I know a lot of parents out there push their children into "more reliable" lines of work. Creative jobs can be "actual" jobs if you're dedicated enough.

Issue 9 | 26

What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out? If you have a drive for something, don't let it die out. Keep at it and do one creative thing each day no matter how small to keep feeding your dream. What's the most challenging part of your career? Staying organized, mentally and physically! Where can people find your website or social media channels? Website: www.lizziedarden.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lizzie_darden

FUN FACTS ABOUT LIZZIE What is the one word that you live by? Play What is the last country you visited? Costa Rica! So beautiful! What is your favorite fashion trend of all time? Wide leg jeans! The wider and more 70's vibes the better! What is your must have beauty product? Rosehip oil Last book or magazine you read? Abbi Jacobsen's book "I Might Regret This"

UNDIVIDED: GOOD TO BE GOOD FOUNDATION By: Char San Pedro

Our primary focus areas are: human rights, social justice and anti-poverty. We work towards a future where our fellow human beings can thrive in peace, liberty and good health so that they may have the well-rounded lives everyone deserves. Together with our community, we aim in helping improve outcomes for the families and women who need it most. What began as a small, informal gathering of friends and family donating essential goods for neighbourhood shelters, has grown into a community-wide mission with the support of kindred companies and change-makers from all walks of life. Thanks to our contributors and sponsors, we are able to keep our events' administrative costs low which allows us to direct our efforts in fostering donations and raising awareness for the (supported) cause.

G

ood To Be Good Foundation is a growing grassroots initiative whose purpose is to ignite social change with the power of transformational goods and unbounded compassion. We partner with our local network of influential organizations and charities (Red Door Family Shelter, Women’s Habitat of Etobicoke, BOOST For Kids, Community Food Centres Canada, Dixon Hall Neighbourhood Services) to break the cycle of poverty and social injustices within our communities.

Between 2016-2018, with a total of 6 charity events, our collective has raised over $8500+ and 20,000+ donated items aiding mothers, young women, babies, children and youth. We believe that the impact of a thoughtful donation, both from an emotional and economic standpoint, reinforces meaningful change, progress for others and the overall goodness of humanity. In our efforts to do good, we give significance to consistent "small yet mighty acts of kindness” in constructing the change we want to see in the world. No matter how big or small the act is, our choices as an individual affects the whole and no life is separate from another. At the core, we recognize that equality belongs to the responsibility of each and everyone of us and honour that in everything we do with each other. We champion action. We value compassion. We stand for equality. We are here to serve and be of use. Issue 9 | 31

UNDIVIDED CAMPAIGN

UNDIVIDED is a modern feminist visual by Good To Be Good, photographed by the talented Tara Noelle, that highlights the unity of women who come from all races, identities, backgrounds, creeds, trajectories, experiences and personal stories. An annual campaign that's built to amplify voices, celebrate the women's movement and help bring awareness to the innumerable intersectional ways women face and feel challenged. The essence of being a feminist, is unattached to trendy hashtags or the posited stereotype of "man-hating." For us, it's a human rights issue and a fundamental belief that when equal balance is achieved, together, we are all more free. Through the twinkle of honest art, we express our feminist presence - unarmed and in total union and symbolically stand on the shoulders of women revolutionaries that have paved the way for us globally. We acknowledge that being a 'woman' can signify many complex, unparalleled things and cannot (and should not) be boxed into one. This campaign is made up of women and collaborators who mutually stand for advocacy, uniqueness and the unbolted support we hold for women everywhere. In league, we work fervently in demanding justice and respect for not just one kind of woman - but for all women (and non-binary people) who share space in equality discourse. Our commitment to putting women to the front and centre starts with inclusion in all fields while promoting a culture of true, earnest diversity beyond the visible. When women come together with a collective intention: magic happens. An impact greater than ourselves can arise. No matter our differences, tribulations and paths - we build, we support, we fight, we love. And we do this side by side. That is our complete power. Today and everyday, we celebrate the vast glory of a woman’s challenges and her uninhibited possibilities. The female spirit is ceaselessly alive and needed globally more than ever. Change starts with us. We stand UNDIVIDED. Issue 9 | 32

By: Angela Brickley

ell me about yourself and your career so far, how did you become a jewelry designer?

I’m first generation American and my family is from Bangladesh. Jewelry is a big part of our culture. Every piece we wear symbolizes special moments, it's meant to be kept forever, and is eventually passed down as heirlooms. When my nani would go back home every year for the summer, she would bring back different things — trinkets, textiles, jewelry. As I got older she would ask what I preferred and I would always say “jewelry.” After I turned 14 she asked me to sketch out what I wanted and that following summer she brought it back to life. The rest is history. What advice would you give an up and coming jewelry designer or creative? Stay passionate, and think about innovative ways to create a need and demand for your product. What is the biggest misconception people not working in your field have about your job? That it's an easy path, which it is not. The jewelry and fashion industry and have shifted so much in the last decade that we have all had to struggle and reinvent ourselves in different ways in order to continue to grow. For example 10 years ago brands could not survive without wholesale accounts whereas now wholesale is not a necessary path and e-commerce is a great opportunity for a brand to succeed as maintain and intimate relationship with their customers.

Issue 9 | 38

What has been the most memorable moment of your career, so far? I always say that my favorite moment is when I am walking down the street and spot someone wearing our jewelry. It is exactly why I do what I do. I want women to be able to express themselves and add their personality into their style through the way they accessorize. What challenges do you have as a jewelry designer? All of my designs are like my babies, and when finalizing a collection it can be hard to choose which are the final pieces that make it into a collection.

"The Haati Chai woman is most beautiful when she is comfortable in her own skin." What does your current business model look like? My business partner Ali and I wear a lot of hats as does our intimate team. Ali leads the production, quality control, and design while I lead campaigns, strategy, and partnerships. Talk us through what your typical day looks like. Every day is different from the next, usually busy and filled with meetings. It's easy to get stressed when your days are like this which is why I start and end my day on the same schedules to give myself balance. I like to wake up and take some time to myself as I get ready, do daily affirmations and then head to the office. Similarly when I am home I have dinner with my family, take a long relaxing bath with my son, and we all head to bed. What do you want your brand to ultimately be and do for others? There is one you and that is very beautiful. The Haati Chai woman is most beautiful when she is comfortable in her own skin. Every piece a woman owns serve as a reminder of her identity -- a piece she may acquire after getting a new job, the birth of her first child, or something she purchased for a nice vacation. What goals do you wish to achieve in the future? Haati Chai is a brand connected with a specific lifestyle, with time we plan to expand on offering more of this experience to clients in different ways. How do you choose what jewelry work for each individual client? Each process is very different. It's really important to me to allow the client's personality to show in the project so I like to get a feel for what they like, who they are, what their needs are and from there I will create a few mockups which they choose from.

Fun Facts About Stella How would you describe your personal style? Tonal, effortless, and timeless. What is the one word that you live by? Fully What is your favorite item in your closet? I feel like this is a trick question. In the last year I Marie Kondo'd everything and I am happy to say that I only own pieces that spark joy. It's hard for me to say what is my all time favorite piece, but lately in terms of function I love fanny packs, and I just got a pair of Maryam Nassir Zadeh wedge heels I can't stop thinking about. What's the best style advice you've received? Invest in the right pieces for YOU. Meaning don't get caught up in trying to wear what everyone is wearing, or caught up owning more things than you need. Who is your favorite designer? Why? I really appreciate the hard work many designers put into their brands Where can people find your website or social media channels? www.haatichai.com www.chaitime.me @stellasimona @haatichai

What’s the Most SPECtacular Look for Your Face? By: Yalda Kazemi The flowers are starting to bloom, the temperatures are rising, and the sun is shining its gorgeous rays on us. Yup, you know it, Spring is in the air and the season for sunglasses is quickly upon us! Particularly exciting are all the funky and cool sunglasses trends for spring/summer 2019. But then again, how do you know which trends to check out, and which to look away from? I mean, upcoming trends like itty bitty specs, big square frames, mirrored lenses, visor and red frames are going to be all over the faces of fashion girls this season, but will they actually suit your face? To help you secure your spot as a cool fashion girl this season, here’s a breakdown of some of the upcoming spring/summer 2019 sunglasses trends, and the styles most suitable for your face shape. TRENDS TO LOOK OUT FOR Mirrored lenses Highly embellished frames Big, square (aka think grandma/grandpa) frames Visor/flattened top frames Micro sunglasses Unique shapes (triangle, heart, butterfly) Red frames or lenses (or both) Round frames Monochromatic specs (frame and lenses in matching colors) Now that you know the intricacies of the upcoming specs trends, here’s a simple guide on which styles you can rock best!

Issue 9 | 43

FACE SHAPES Round

Round faces feature wider foreheads, fuller cheeks and rounder chins, and lack sharp lines or angles on the face. Look for sunglasses with thicker frames and those with strong lines/angular shapes like square or rectangular styles. Selecting frames in darker colors will also help to accentuate the effect and create a sharper look to your face. For all you beauties with a round face, have fun with big square frames, visor, mirrored and embellished styles, and even those with monochromatic colors. Avoid rounded and micro styles as they will exaggerate the roundness of your face. Round

Square

Square shaped faces are those with a prominent and distinct angular jawline, and wider foreheads that are more uniform with the jaw. Look for sunglasses that are more rounded and curved to add softness to the distinctly angular lines of your face. Rounded, oval, cat eye and even butterfly shaped frames work best, and darker colours will provide a more distinct contrast as opposed to lighter frames. For all the jaw dropping beauties with square shaped faces, this season you should sport gorgeous round frames (preferably in darker shades, but, you can still wear lighter coloured frames too; you just won’t get as dramatic of an effect). You can also make a bold statement with monochromatic styles, unique shapes like butterfly frames and bold red frames/lenses. Just avoid sunglasses with strong lines and angular shapes like squares, rectangles, triangles, and visor styles which will exaggerate your facial shape. Monochromatic

Celine 58mm Round Sunglasses $430

Butterfly

Gucci 563mm Gradient Oversize Butterfly Sunglasses $650

Round

Chloe Carlina Torsade 58mm Round Sunglasses $445

Oval

Oval shaped faces feature a more balanced shape with a slight curving to the jawline, and a forehead that’s a bit wider in comparison to the chin. Oval faces, you’re lucky, you can pretty much rock any style or shape you want. The only caveat is to try and keep things proportioned to your face. Oval faced babes can have a ton of fun with all the sunglasses trends this season. Go bold with unique shapes and sizes like big square or round frames, heart, micro and visor styles, or show your wild child side with embellished, colorful monochromatic and even bright red specs!

Heart shaped faces consist of a broad forehead and a more pointed, narrow chin, with often defined and high cheekbones. Look for sunglasses with wider frames or detailing on the lower half to take attention away from your broader forehead, and veer more towards lighter colors to create a softer effect. Stick to styles like cat eyed frames and aviators, and you’ll be able to wear whatever colors or textures your heart desires (pun intended). For all you heart shaped loves, jump on the mirrored lenses bandwagon this season (particularly in aviator styles), embellished frames (especially on the lower half), big square frames and monochromatic styles.

DAYNA BOLDEN

Host | Model | Content Creator CEO of Bolden Creative Media By: Angela Brickley Photography: Vernon Davis @VSDavisphotography

W

hat is your favorite thing about being a social media influencer/entrepreneur? I love that I get to do what I love every single day by creating content that inspires and uplifts other women. Who or what inspires you to chase your dreams? I inspired myself. I really wanted to live a life that I had complete control over and I wanted to do something that I was truly passionate about. I wanted to be the perfect example for my daughter that she could do anything she works hard for. Why did you decide to blog about lifestyle, fashion and travel? I decided to blog about these categories because these are the categories that most interests me and I knew it would be authentic for me to naturally share what I care about most.

Issue 9 | 49

What is your biggest goal for your blog? My biggest goal for my blog is to be BIGGER than a blog. I want to build my legacy and grow my brand to something that is more than a social media blogger, I have big plans to create my own product line and to continue creating women empowerment events. I want to build a legacy that can ultimately help other women. What does your current business model look like? I currently have a team of three people. I have a Brand manager that helps me with my overall strategy and execution of my brand. I have a social media manager that helps me manage my @theboldexperience social media account and I have an assistant that helps me manage my day to day admin projects. Talk us through what your typical day looks like. Honestly, no day is the same, but that is what I love the most. I start my day by waking up at 5 am. I like to meditate, write in my journal, and pray. I then get up, get my daughter off to school, I go work out and then I start my work day. I start by checking my calendar, My brand manager sends me a daily schedule of what my day consists of, and things I have to tackle. Every day is pretty booked with either shoots, meetings, conference calls, emails and content creation. I try to end my days by 5:00pm. That is a typical day, nothing too fancy, all work, but good work! Tell us more about your event The Bold Experience? The Bold Experience is an event that I created in November 2018, it was my first event to connect with my community and inspire them through networking, and workshops with key tangible takeaways. It is a premier event that is beautiful and content rich in every way. This event was widely successful drawing in over 150 women from all over the U.S. I will definitely continue it again in November 2019. Check out the Instagram page at @TheBoldExperience What do you want your brand to ultimately be and do for others? PUTTING YOUR STYLE PERSONALITY IN THE BAG By: Yalda Kazemi

A large component of who we are and how we navigate the sea of life is dependent on our personalities. So it’s no surprise that our fashion choices are affected by varying style personalities as well. Do you peruse your favorite shopping district in search of the highly embellished and 90’s comeback Fendi baguette bag this season? or do you cringe at the thought of wearing sparkly arm candy around town, and opt for a refined, black Givenchy bucket bag with clean lines and elegant detailing instead? Guess what? There is no right or wrong answer! Most of us make purchase decisions based on our style personalities (and yes, there is such a thing!). So why don’t we take a little peek inside the spring 2019 bag of trends and see which styles your style personality is more likely to hold on to. Classic & Sophisticated Ladies Polished, refined and classic pieces are your go to. You ladies prefer timeless pieces that are more structured and devoid of flashy colors or embellishments. Sleek lines, superior quality and craftsmanship are your prerequisites. Spring 2019’s trends including classic black bags with an emphasis on gold hardware accents, refined bucket bags with sleek and polished handles, and luxury belt bags are a sure bet for you.

4 STRATEGIES TO BOOST YOUR ONLINE MARKETING

By: Vanessa Buchanan Marketing is ever-changing and it must be taken seriously for your business. You have to find innovative ways to bring in more customers and achieve better profit. What we work on today may be completely irrelevant a few years from now. In order to achieve success, one has to change marketing strategies with the changing times and must incorporate new and innovative techniques. Here are 4 ideas to improve your website marketing strategies: 1. Repositioning of your opt-in offer With the slight repositioning of an opt-in offer, you can achieve great results! A common or best practice is to provide some incentive to collect email addresses. Keep in mind that an opt-in offer is a great tool for gathering a customer’s email address, and building your email list to strengthen your marketing strategy in the future. The opt-in offer appearance on a website can have a huge impact on the number of subscribers as well. Below are a few options for placement of an opt-in form on your website: -Sidebar -Header -Footer -Middle of content -Bottom of the content -Pop up -Welcome page 2. Build value for your customers Make adjustments in your website for positive results such as: -Know your customers by creating a survey. The survey should ask what type of content would they like to see. -Create rich content that resonates with your customers. -Ask them about the type of email content they find valuable or even about the questions they have regarding your business. Turn those responses into your email content. Issue 9 | 58

3. Clear and actionable calls to actions Always remember: You can provide a clear call to action on everything a user or visitor can touch. Are you offering a sign up option for the newsletter? Inviting them to follow your social media page? Downloading any important documents related to your business? Or any purchase options available to the customers? you can include any of these on your website. To achieve results, always research best practices and incorporate the most profitable ideas on your website. Always be sure to offer your audience a compelling reason to complete your call to action. Don’t use terms like “click here." Use actionable, and clear language in your call to action. For example, “Shop now”, “Reserve Your Seat”, “Download The Guide Now”, etc. 4. Offer testimonials Websites provide a very powerful ability to highlight your success stories via testimonials. Customer testimonials and case studies are considered the most effective content marketing tactics, identified by 89% and 88%, respectively, of B2B marketers. (Pardot) Offer a testimonials page to enhance credibility with your customers. This will enhance their ability to trust and believe you.

ASHLEY COCKRELL

Nurse Practitioner | Lifestyle Blogger | Founder of My Living Spree

W

By: Lori Granded

hat is your favorite thing about being a social media influencer/entrepreneur?

I love being a social media influencer because it has blessed me with a platform that allows me to express myself creatively to the world. With this platform, I’ve had the opportunity to network and collaborate with some amazing people! I am able to give people advice based on my experiences and show them how they can maximize all that they are—be it through fashion, travel, or lifestyle inspiration. Issue 9 | 61

"My younger self inspires me to chase my dreams. As a child, I told myself “no” and “you’re not good enough” when it came to expressing myself creatively." Who or what inspires you to chase your dreams? My younger self inspires me to chase my dreams. As a child, I told myself “no” and “you’re not good enough” when it came to expressing myself creatively. Deep down, I always dreamed of becoming a model, an entertainer, a fashion stylist and a world traveler. But, I always found myself settling for safe because I knew I was academically driven. It was not until I became older when I made the decision to chase my dreams, which is now known as #mylivingspree. I owe it to my younger self to express my highest, most creative side and never settle for safe again! Why did you decide to blog about lifestyle, fashion and travel? When I decided to start a blog, I thought of things people came to me for as a resource. I’ve always had a passion for fashion and travel and I’ve always sought to improve every area of my life—mentally, physically, spiritually and financially. My Living Spree blog came so naturally because it is me sharing my life and my own living as a resource for fashion inspiration, travel experiences, and life advice. What is your biggest goal for your blog? The biggest goal for my blog is to create a digital platform that is both authentic at its core, yet revolutionary. Simply put, I want to challenge myself on my blog just as I challenge myself in real life. I want to slay in my own lane while sharing my story of trials and triumphs. It is important for me and my blog to have a core connection and synergy that keeps my message honest, vulnerable, and true.

What does your current business model look like? Currently, I am running a one-woman show and it has given me priceless hands-on experience. When I first decided to take on the task of creating the My Living Spree brand, I admit it was extremely intimidating. I have no prior business experience or background and I knew I would have to teach myself everything I know and that’s what I did. I do the social media marketing, content creation, apparel design, apparel distribution, and website designer. You name it, I do it! One thing I wanted to ensure in this business is that I maintained my integrity throughout. If I am on a true living spree, I have to be willing to explore and take on roles that I never thought I would in order to bring my vision to life. However, I love other creatives and have found valuable partnerships with a great photographer, local boutique owners, and other female entrepreneurs. I also have brand ambassadors that get the word out about the community we are building. My living spree shows my point of view, but it is all about community so anytime I can collaborate with someone I know I am fulfilling a bigger purpose.

Issue 9 | 64

Talk us through what your typical day looks like. I work full-time as a nurse practitioner during the day, so My Living Spree is still a side hustle of sorts. I schedule out and plan all of my social media posts on Sunday nights; therefore, I already know what to post and at what times for the week. In the mornings before work, I post my daily devotionals and engage on social media. By lunch time, I run to the post-office to ship products to customers. During the evenings, I usually package orders, edit content for the website or post new content on social media. I save new content creation for weekends when my schedule is a bit more flexible and I have a clearer mind. Flexibility is key. Tell us more about your brand My Living Spree. It’s funny because My Living Spree brand was created by happenstance! When I had my first photoshoot for the blog, my best-friend surprised me with a black t-shirt with the “My Living Spree” blog logo on the front. I was so ecstatic to wear my own logo, something I created. I wore it during the photoshoot and the next thing I know, all of my friends and family wanted to purchase a shirt! A couple months later, My Living Spree lifestyle brand was born. I started selling standard t-shirts, then expanded to crop tanks, hoodies, hats, and more! My Living Spree is a brand that empowers others to live on purpose, in style. It reminds those who rock the brand to ask themselves “Am I truly on a Living Spree?” and identify what #mylivingspree means to them. What do you want your brand to ultimately be and do for others? My Living Spree lifestyle is for anyone on a living spree! Whether you’re traveling, starting a new business venture, going back to school, or simply working on yourself from the inside out, I want you to feel empowered. I want the brand to encourage people to live bold, fearless lives and unlock their true potential. That thing you’ve been waiting to do… DO IT! Live your best life from the inside out. The beauty of My Living Spree brand is that your living spree is whatever you want it to be! I want everyone to live life unapologetically.

What's next for your business? Next, I want to expand my apparel to more than just t-shirts, hoodies and athleisure wear! The fashionista in me wants to branch out and explore a bit more! Since I love to travel, I want to expand the brand internationally. This brand is all about limitless living, so I am ready to expand and take the limits off! Stay tuned ☺ What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out? Believe in yourself, ask for help, take a break if you need it and don’t create to say you put something out. Let it truly represent who you are at your core. We love how you incorporate faith in your blog post, do you feel that is important for entrepreneurs to read on your blog? When I started My Living Spree blog, I vowed to stay true to my morals, beliefs and values. My faith is all of who I am and it drives and defines all the other parts of me. Sharing my faith through my blog posts is part of my purpose because I know that without God none of this would be possible. I want entrepreneurs to know that they don’t have to do it alone… actually they shouldn’t try! God is sovereign and if we consistently put him first and align ourselves and our business plan with His will for our lives, everything will succeed and fall into place.

What is your favorite piece in your wardrobe? Currently, my favorite piece in my wardrobe is a vintage fur stole from Saks 5th Avenue that my grandmother gave to me before she passed away. This stole means a lot to me because it symbolizes my grandmother’s legacy and impact on my life, which was that of fashion and all-around fabulousness. I recently wrote about how we can incorporate these family heirlooms into our daily personal style. I will always cherish this heirloom and remember her when I wear it. It is fierce and fabulous! What is one thing on your bucket list that you would like to complete by end of the year? This year, I would like to finally “test the waters” again and learn how to swim. Fun fact about me- as adventurous as I am, I never learned how to swim. It has been on my bucket list for quite some time now, but I’ve always put it off. I am bumping it up on my list of priorities so that I can jump off of a yacht into the ocean the next time I travel overseas! #goals

WHY ARUBA SHOULD BE YOUR NEXT CARIBBEAN DESTINATION By: Jessica Serna | @MyCurlyAdventures Photography: Anne Menke Aruba is known as One Happy Island and the island where visitors return to the most. So much so that the island gives awards to people who come every year. So what makes this island so special that has people coming back for more and more? Hint: the same reasons you’ll be wanting to pack up your bags and catch the next flight to this beautiful Caribbean island! Perfect Weather Located just below the hurricane belt, Aruba is perfectly situated for beautiful weather without the scare of the storms. That means sunshine and clear blue waters any time of the year! The temperature hovers around 80 degrees year-round so there’s never a bad time to visit Aruba.

Issue 9 | 67

A Little Bit of Something For Everyone If you’re looking for a vacation where you can just sit back, relax, and enjoy the sun, Aruba has crystal clear blue waters and some of the cleanest beaches. You can lay out in the sun without worrying about people trying to sell you trinkets, and the windy weather acts as a natural air conditioner. Palm Beach offers an array of beautiful resorts with views overlooking the ocean surrounded by palm trees. At the Hilton Aruba, you can rent a complimentary palapa to sit under all day, enjoy a drink while live performers play, make some friends with a parrot, or go for a leisurely bike ride. You could stay all day at the resorts, but you’ll probably find you want to do some exploring too! For people who like to go out and explore, Aruba has a wide variety of exciting activities. Take a catamaran snorkeling cruise that takes you to destinations like the SS Antilla, the largest shipwreck in the Caribbean. This 400-foot wreck provides a look back in history with opportunities to view rooms and artifacts while also showcasing the beautiful diversity of nature with natural coral forming and different sea creatures swimming throughout the boat. Afterward hit up other beautiful coral sites and try to spot a starfish! As a bonus, the cruise comes with breakfast, lunch, and unlimited drinks! Want even more action? This windy island makes it the perfect spot to learn kite surfing which is like a mixture of paragliding, surfing, and wakeboarding, all in one. With enough practice, you’ll practically be flying above water! Not to mention, it’s an exciting and unique way to see more of the island and even a couple of shipwrecks!

A Unique Culture Although Aruba is a Dutch island, there are over 70 nationalities present on the island which is reflected in their many cuisine options and festivals. Most Arubans speak 4 languages: Papamiento (their local language), Spanish, Dutch, and English. Try Dutch pancakes, Middle Eastern falafel, Caribbean curry, Cuban ropa vieja, Surnames flavors, and of course locally caught fish. You’ll probably be heading back just to try all the foods you didn’t get around to eating the first time! Festivals All Year Long Aruba knows how to party! Just about any month is a good month to head to Aruba for the local festivities. During the Spring, Aruba spends an entire month celebrating Carnival. Catch parades that shut down the entire island as locals dress up in elaborate costumes full of colors, giant feathers, and sequins as they dance down the streets. Carnival is one festival you do not want to miss out on! Or if you’re looking for the perfect place to celebrate New Year’s, Aruba makes the perfect spot. The locals love New Year’s and talk about the fireworks months in advance. Whether you decide to hike up to the top of the hill or view the festivities from your resort balcony, you’ll almost think it’s daytime with how many fireworks go off. Issue 9 | 69

Incredible Landscape We already expect the Caribbean to have beautiful beaches, but Aruba offers so much more with its desert climate and dramatic landscape. Â If you drive past the beaches, you will be met with rock formations, crashing waves, and phenomenal sites like no other! One of the most popular spots is the Arikok National Forest, only accessible by 4x4 vehicles. Explore natural wonders like the Natural Bridge, Fontein caves, and the Conchi Natural Pools.
