EDITORIAL

by Romain Poulles, President, Luxembourg EcoInnovation Cluster Luxembourg might be known mostly for its financial sector, but did you know that the first triple certified sustainable office building was built in Luxembourg? This “green” Luxembourg might not be very well known abroad but is becoming a more important economic growth pillar for the country every day. Numerous companies within the clean technologies industry have decided to start operations in Luxembourg or transfer activities here because of our global connections, pioneering partnerships with research facilities, advantageous financial incentives and excellent support structure. The government’s willingness to focus on and support the Luxembourg cleantech sector has been confirmed even during the financial crisis. In a strategic background paper, the government has identified excellent potential in the fields of: • rational use of natural resources; and • innovative materials. In addition, a whole environment has been built up in order to allow companies to benefit from public research. Two public research organisations have been created with special focus on the two main priorities mentioned above and Luxembourg, unlike many EU nations, has maintained its financial commitment to research, annually investing approximately 1.6% of its GDP. This catalogue gives you an insight into our members’ capabilities. The role of our Cluster management team is to assist players interested in establishing relationships with the clean techonlogies sector in Luxembourg, or even in locating activities here. We would be delighted to provide you with support, information and further contacts.

LUXEMBOURG ECOINNOVATION CLUSTER Luxembourg hosts a thriving eco-innovation sector. There are numerous cleantech companies which work mainly in the fields of eco-construction, renewable energy, waste management, water and electromobility, supported by numerous public agencies and research organisations. The goal of the Luxembourg EcoInnovation Cluster is to orchestrate this flourishing sector. The Cluster creates links between private companies and public research organisations, thereby creating business opportunities for its members and helping them to promote their capabilities and skills. The focus of the Cluster is on the circular economy, mobility, and smart cities and technologies. These three pillars have been identified as having great potential for the Luxembourg economy. Luxembourg aims to become a European competence centre in these three fields. With support from the Government, the Cluster’s role in this undertaking shall be guided by its leitmotif “identify, connect, realise”.

CORE BUSINESS CIMALUX is a cement producer. In the context of sustainable development in terms of environmental protection and preservation of natural resources CIMALUX has launched several RDI Projects in order to keep it’s carbon footprint as low as possible. The prevention of any type of pollution whatsoever in air, water and soil, as well as discomfort caused to residents by noise or vibration associated with industrial activity takes its sites for CIMALUX paramount. Cement production according to the principle of sustainable development also includes - and this mainly in the manufacture of clinker - use of alternative raw materials in replacement of limestone , marl and other natural mineral raw materials and fuels substitution in place of fossil fuels. The alternative raw materials are by-products or wastes which are produced commercially and which, as is the case of ash, are combustion residues. CIMALUX is trying to increase the use of materials such as slag, ash, industrial sludge that replace limestone and marl , which can help reduce CO2 emissions. But before using this product, its use compatibility with the environment is evaluated.

PRODUCTS & SERVICES ExSep® Systems The patented Extreme-Separator ExSep® is a treatment device for mechanical solid/ liquid separation developed by Epuramat which significantly reduces the plant operating costs. In the municipal wastewater treatment, ExSep® replaces sand and fat trap as well as huge sedimentation tanks. In the field of industrial wastewater treatment, ExSep® takes over the complete primary treatment. The ExSep can be operated with Chemicals if needed. ExSep® is characterised by an separation efficiency of up to 99% (particle size > 15μ). Through flow capacities range from 0.5 to 210 m3 per hour and ExSep® (ExSep sizes 500 to 7000). By implementing the ExSep® in the primary treatment process, subsequent treatment steps are relieved and can be designed in smaller scale resulting in very compact plants. Box4Water Box4Water offers a compact and decentralised wastewater treatment solution for small, remote communities without access to the municipal sewer system. Far off a sewer infrastructure a Box4Water system proves to be economically very advantageous. The Box4Water design taking advantage of the pre-treatment by ExSep®, which allows a very compact Bio-Membrane-Reactor downstream. It can be operational quickly, runs with a minimum of maintenance and its fully automatic control allows remote monitoring and operation on a low energy level. Due to the integrated sludge dewatering system which works without chemicals, operation and disposal costs can be kept to a minimum. CORE BUSINESS Electromobility will only be able to become established across Europe if the limited autonomy of electric vehicles stops being an obstacle to their owners. This requires drivers of electric cars and cycles from near and far to be able to use all publicly accessible charging stations at all times without first having to learn about any special features of any one charging station. Even though there will always be differences in the looks of charging stations or their performance features according to region, operator or manufacturer, the basic functions of each charging station must be consistent and intuitive: Identify, charge and pay. Every person who owns a RFID card valid for this purpose has to be able to hold this card in front of any charging station, charge the vehicle’s battery and then receive an invoice from the commercial or public facility that provided the card. No matter if drivers are in their own region or want to drive to another nearby country: if electromobility is to be sustainably and border-crossingly promoted, customers must be offered easy-to-understand solutions so that they can charge their vehicle even when not familiar with any local peculiarities – as usual, certain that their service provider at home will deal with processing - roaming included. Estonteco is the first company in the Greater Region in and around Luxembourg that is entirely specialized in border crossing solutions for electric vehicles and their drivers.

PRODUCTS & SERVICES Estonteco Open Charge Points are more than “just” intelligent powerful electrical charging points: • All electric vehicle owners can easily view every Open Charge Point and its actual current status (available or occupied) on the internet. • Open Charge Points are extremely easy to access 24/7. • Open Charge Points are networked with other regional and international charging points; smooth and safe “roaming” guarantees the secure identification of every customer right across Europe. • Public or private parking space operators and local electricity suppliers can always be sure that they will be paid correctly for all electricity supplied. • If our customers have any questions, they can call our multilingual customer service team. Thanks to our close proximity to the customer, our engineers can be quickly deployed to resolve any potential technical problems on site. “Open” also means that we are open to new innovations, wherever these represent added value for our customers. Our technical concept is also open, which is how we are also able to incorporate existing charging points from other manufacturers within our network with ease. Open Charge Points are the foundations of environmentally-friendly mobility without borders! The Open Charge Point concept has been created to satisfy the requests of small municipalities as well as those of large regional grid operators and international companies.

CORE BUSINESS Photovoltaics, semiconductor physics / Thin-film non-Si solar cells, defects in compound semiconductors, Inorganic synthesis of thin films, annealing, ionic liquids, nanoparticles Our core business is photovoltaics. The aim of our laboratory is to use low cost synthesis processes to make high quality semiconductors for photovoltaic applications. We have the ability, in collaboration with another group at the university, to go from substrate to finished photovoltaic device allowing us to directly see the results of our investigations. We focus on inorganic compound semiconductors made via a two step precursor annealing route. We have particular expertise in electrodeposition of metals and semiconductors from aqueous and ionic liquids. We also study the effect of thermodynamics, kinetics, and microstructure on the annealing of precursor materials to form semiconductors. Our latest research uses a Laser to form semiconductor materials on the timescale of one second.

• Semiconductor quality assessment - photoelectrochemistry We can provide advice, and testing facilities on how to anneal chalcogenide semiconductor materials, in particular Cu(In,Ga)Se2 and Cu2ZnSnSee4. To do this, the thermodynamics, kinetics, and precursor microstructure must be understood. A unique approach taken in our laboratory consists of using a LASER to perform the thermal annealing, decreasing the processing time from hours to a few seconds.

We concentrate on chalcopyrites (Cu(InGa)Se 2 CIGS) and related materials. These semiconductors are interesting from the application point of view as well as from a fundamental physics perspective. Thin film solar cells are considered the next generation of photovoltaics because of their enormous cost reduction potential which is based on the greatly reduced consumption of material and energy. Among the currently available technologies solar cells based on chalcopyrite absorbers show the highest efficiencies on the laboratory scale as well as in industrial production. Besides this technological interest, chalcopyrites show also unusual physical properties, concerning their phase behaviour, their electrical doping properties, their surface physics and their grain boundaries, which can be traced to the exceptionally low formation energies of native defects. We study the defects in these materials by applying optical and electrical spectroscopic methods to single crystalline films prepared by epitaxy and polycrystalline films as used in the solar cells.
