E D I T O R ’ S L E T T E R Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t’ do that than the things you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. – Mark Twain As we set sail in 2021 we embark on what we all have been looking forward to - a new year with 2020 left far far behind, and with that LUX has a new new look. We hope you love it just as much as we do. Although the south’s allure is not new, travelers have been wintering in the south for over 100 years, this year it takes on a whole new meaning and appreciation. As we spend more time traveling within the US and less time abroad there are so many wonderful places to visit. Luxury Travel PhD takes us on an exploration of their favorites on pg 120. From bbq to a healthy shrimp and grits (who knew) to the mint julep, our feast section is filled with tasty tidbits. Do you know where the name cocktails even originated? After reading Born and Raised in the South by Melissa Corbin you will. Of course it is the season in Palm Beach and we have a peek into the newest on the scene. Nicole Peternel steps inside The White Elephant Hotel a Nantucket icon who recently opened its doors in Palm Beach as well as the new HMF restaurant at the Breakers Hotel. LUX loves all things beautiful and the aesthetics at both are just wonderful, not to mention the food and service. Enjoy the captivating South along with us. Cheers!

ingle Ladies in your last few decades, listen up! It is time to change up our life and do things we were frightened to do before. We need to shake things up and keep life interesting. As my life and circumstances change, I am blessed that I embrace change so readily as what alternative do I really have? I am not going to lie, I am looking forward to living the single life!

Why settle when you can reach for the stars! Hello new opportunities, new relationships and new adven-

tures, here I come! Ladies, let’s grab all of those adventures that lie ahead for us!!!! It has been one full year and I am ready to enter into the unchartered territory of DATING!!!! (Time Flies when you are having fun or so they say.) Oh, did I say I was ready? Slight exaggeration as on my first semi-date I invited a friend to tag along for dinner “uninvited!” I was nervous, anxious and 30 minutes late! Not a great first start, right? The glory days were when we were teenagers or even in college and dating was magical. We could bat our eyes and guys would fall all over us. The Golden Years dating scene may be a little different and I am ready to explore my options with a very open attitude. Easy to say …now I need to listen to myself. “I CAN DO THIS!!!!”

What I’ve come to learn about glamour is that it’s all about seeing yourself and the world through the eyes of charm. So, if you want to live a more glamorous life, here are 10 ways to do it. 1.

energetically. You must become a match for it. Feel the feelings of having your desires now. Live as if your prayers have already been answered.

ENJOYING YOUR LIFE. For years, I tried to improve my life by forcing, hustling, pressuring, and stressing. I finally understood that to get somewhere, you must bring the energy of where it is you want to go into the life you have now. So, I started a simple practice of celebrating life every single day; the little and the big things. What happened is that life started serving me up more things to appreciate and celebrate because I was unknowingly asking the universe to send me more.

When you’re in a state of not enoughness, you create more not enoughness? Who determines what is enough? So many of you are saying “I’ll feel enough when I’ve lost the weight, when I’m making more money, when I’ve found that dream guy, when I have the dream job, when I have it all together.” The truth is, there is enough. You are enough. And there will always be enough. Our job is to do the internal work of getting into a state of enoughness. So, you have to make the decision that whatever you do is always enough, that you are always enough. And from that place, you will be a match for so much more.

ENOUGHNESS.

WHAT IS MIND BODY, REBOOT? Our Mind, Body, Reboot was designed for those ready to make a change toward a healthier and happier lifestyle. Conventional medicine tends to focus on biochemical and germ based science with pharmaceutical solutions. We want to show you how to naturally, detox your mental, physical, and spiritual well being. Our focus is on healing the whole body. Build a solid, whole health foundation to experience more energy, focus, and vitality!

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF TOXIC OVERLOAD Did you know we are exposed to several toxic chemicals on a daily basis? Numbers can be up to 500,000 a day! They can be found in the air that we breathe, water supply, food that wheat, self-care products, and cleaning supplies just to name a few. Even though exposure can be minimal, these toxins accumulate on our bodies. Once the body has had enough and can no longer take on the burden, physical symptoms manifest. Do any of these signs sound familiar? • GI issues such as constipation, diarrhea, bloating or severe gas • Brain fog • Chronic headaches • Fatigue or low energy • Aching joints or muscles • Skin breakouts or rashes • Discoloration or brittle nails • Dry unhealthy hair, even hair loss • Weight gain • Mood swings or irritability • Body odor • Sugar cravings If so it may be time to detox!

32

Volume 5, Issue 1 | www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com

GUT-BRAIN-SKIN-CCONNECTION Toxicity overload has been linked to nearly every disease including dementia, food allergies, auto-immune disorders, heart disease, obesity, and digestive issues. Emerging evidence has developed in what we call the gut-brain-skin axis. These axes communicate and work together to help fight off toxic overload and keep bodies healthy. Detoxing is a vital component in keeping this connection working at optimal levels. It is necessary for healing and disease prevention.

COMMON HERX REATIONS TOOLS FOR SUCCESS Detoxing is not easy, sometimes your symptoms will get worse before they get better. Think about your why? Why do I want to detox? You may want to loose a few pounds, be more energetic, or even resolve some inflammation that is causing pain. Whatever the reason is you need to remind yourself daily of the why. This will keep you motivated and successful during your detox. Timing is everything. To prepare yourself for the transition into detox mode start by scheduling it in your calendar. This will help to hold your self accountable and decide if the time is right. So not start a detox if you are under a lot of stress, super busy,

• Headaches • Severe Fatigue • Cold or flu-like symptoms such as body aches/pain, fever, sore throat • increased mucus • increased body odor • Cold / hot sweats • Skin flushing • moodiness and irritability

embrace the detox so that you can make the necessary changes

• Diarrhea or constipation

to healthier habits. • Reduce caffeine and other stimulants • eliminate alcohol • eliminate processed foods, refined sugar, and fast food • reduce dairy intake

WAYS TO REDUCE HERX REACTIONS OIL PULLING Oil pulling has been used for centuries as a morning ritual to remove toxins that have accumulated in you mouth. It digs down deep to areas where tooth brushing and floss can’t reach. Start

• increase hydration

with 1 tablespoon of organic coconut, olive, or sunflower oil and

• increase your consumptions of fresh fruits and vegetables

OLD FASHIONED DSP-KY-5 is the government-issued number to James E. Pepper Distillery, and designates this historic icon as the oldest Bourbon distillery still in operation. Flamboyant in promoting their brand in the late 19th century, Colonel Pepper and his wife, Ella, traveled the country in a decked-out train car he called “Old Pepper.” During their visits to New York, often at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, the Colonel was known to socialize with other American captains of industry, including John D. Rockefeller, and Theodore Roosevelt. It was at the Waldorf that Colonel Pepper is credited with introducing the world to the “Old Fashioned” cocktail, which was said to have been invented in his honor by a bartender at the famed Pendennis Club in Louisville. It is also one of six basic drinks listed in David A. Embury’s The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks, widely considered the bible of mixology. Today, you can visit the distillery campus in Lexington, where the original recipe is housed in the distillery’s museum.

TASTE MINT JULEP The term “julep” comes from Spanish and Persian descent as a sugary vehicle for medicine. First mentioned in a satirical play by Richard Mumford entitled The Candidate in 1770, the Mint Julep eventually became a Virginian legacy in 1820 with its first acknowledged master, a freed person of color by the name of Jasper Crouch from Richmond. Virginian born and Kentucky US State Senator Henry Clay added Kentucky to the syrupy cocktail’s heritage when he introduced it to the Round Robin Bar inside the Willard Hotel during his Washington D.C. residency. Today, the Mint Julep is the official cocktail of the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks where more than 120,000 are sold at Church Hill Downs Racetrack, requiring 10,000 bottles of Old Forester Mint Julep Ready-toServe Cocktail, 1,000 pounds of freshly harvested mint and 60,000 pounds of ice.

The Old Forester Mint Julep Recipe (sourced from kentuckyderby.com) • 3 oz. Old Forester Mint Julep • 0.75 oz. Simple Syrup • 8-10 mint leaves • 3 mint sprigs, far garnish Pack mint julep cup with crushed ice. In a mixing glass, combine bourbon, syrup, and mint leaves. Q&A WITH

HERB WILLIAMS By Nelia Verano

As one of the world’s only artists who holds an exclusive account with Crayola, Herb Williams is a paragon of avant garde, using the colorful, iconic sticks of colored wax we all used as children as his medium. But, beyond the nostalgia and charm of crayons, Williams’ work aims to offer unexpected elements of interaction by transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary and contradicting an everyday object’s purpose and place. What began as Williams’ simple pursuit to create something different has birthed astonishing sculptures that are both familiar and exquisite, playful and serious. And nothing short of magical.

Baumgarten’s body of work presents the incessant search for lost loved ones. Through abstraction and realism, his paintings push the viewer to address all images of faith. In his own words, “Even in moments of familiarity and what is recognized, lay emotions of helplessness and sorrow with these figures. The experience of color and the absence of color serve as vessels for the figure through spiritual territories. As I developed my art after the passing of my beloved father, I returned to this series, only to realize I had been creating self portraits. That these figures were a representation of my own search for a lost loved one.”

COCO:

THE BLOOMING OF CHANEL “Fashion fades, only style remains the same.” Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel lived and breathed by these words as Chanel blossomed into the perfect mirror of her quote. Fashion may change or simply vanish out of existence, but Chanel has always endured to remain being the timeless style icon it is known for being today. Now, what is Chanel without Coco? Mademoiselle Coco has always been known for being charming, enchanting, romantic, daring, fearless and absolutely and unmistakably straightforward and honest in all she did. And with her fiery personality, it was thanks to one of her first wealthy beaus that she decided to be entertained by using her seamstress skills as a milliner. Chanel first opened its doors on 21 rue Camdon as a hat boutique in 1910. Coco was first able to open a clothing boutique in Deauville in 1913. Fastidious with the waist-constraining,

oxygen-depriving,

and

cupcake-like gowns that were more commonly worn during her time, Coco decided to create more relaxed silhouettes out of fabrics that at the time was only used for men’s underwear: jersey. This was only the beginning of Coco’s revolutionary designs.

KARL LAGERFELD: CHANEL’S RENAISSANCE

Karl Lagerfeld: a limitless creator, fearless designer, and couture connoisseur - Karl has certainly left an enormous mark for Chanel, having brought Chanel’s breath back after years of downfall after Coco’s passing. With his extensive experience with other labels such as working closely with Yves Saint Laurent, Pierre Balmain, and being creative director for renowned labels such as Valentino, Chloe and Fendi, Chanel hired Karl in 1983 to resuscitate the French brand back to its prestigious high peak placement in luxury fashion. According to Chanel’s website, Karl “brought life back into the Cruise collections, introduced the Métiers d'art and pre-collections, restored Haute Couture to its former glory, and created the CHANEL Ready-to-Wear collection as we know it today.”

VIRGINIE STARTED: THE FUTURE OF CHANEL

The demure, poetic, and romantic right-hand (and left-hand) woman for Karl has been closely involved in the artistic direction of Chanel since 1987, soon being appointed Director of the Chanel Haute Couture Studio in 1997 and 1999 for the Ready-To-Wear Studio. She is certainly familiar with the label and is the rightful heir as Chanel’s new Creative Director. Many are excited to see Chanel through her eyes. Being Karl’s Yin to his Yang, she certainly has been showing a softer side of Chanel recently since she was appointed director. Although she is a bit shyer than Karl, she is quietly strong, tenacious, detailed, extremely intelligent and formidably creative - and this speaks very loudly in her amazing design concepts. The transition from Karl’s direction to Virginie’s has been very smooth due to her influence in Karl’s past collections. She would always remind him of Chanel’s more delicate side, thus creating the Chanel we know today as being flowingly feminine, inspiringly fresh, and idyllically romantic. According to Chanel’s website, “Virginie Viard reinvents, collection after collection, an allure in which refinement is found in the simplicity and the excellence of the detail.” This has been evident in her collections, having introduced newly thematically inspired designs such as Coco’s library inspired Fall/Winter 2019 Couture collection, to the Fall/Winter Couture 2020 Punk inspired collection made for the eccentric, it-girls - both collections being hugely innovative for Chanel, especially having Punk elements which has surely never been seen before for the label. The airy sentimentality, refreshing designs, and dreamlike visual aesthetics, we are very thrilled to see what Virginie has in store for Chanel and the fashion industry as a whole in the future. It's a heavy burden being the head of such a legendary fashion label but Virginie Viard has been succeeding and impressing us with ease, leaving Chanel enthusiasts excited for the future and the fashion industry attentive to her every move as she directs Chanel, a brand that will forever be considered as a style leader and trendsetter for many.

SOUTHERN TRADITIONS HOW FOOD AND COMMUNITY DEFINE THE AMERICAN SOUTH Written by Melissa Corbin

Raised to revere my Southern heritage as a badge of honor wasn’t really a thing in my family. It was simply where my people and their people originated. Though, to this day, there’s no denying my lineage as soon as the first words roll out of my mouth. It’s only with one of those back-handed compliments, or imitating my dialect from someone of parts un-known that I am compelled to, indeed, bless their heart. Yet, I’m forever endeared to those finding my Southerness sweet music to their ears. With all of our flaws, most of us Southerners possess an uncanny knack for hospitality like no other. A knack where “Have you eaten?” is a common vernacular, a full expression of love, if you will. May it be biscuits, pimento cheese, barbecue and the likes, it’s the spirit in which they are made which, at least in part, defines our identity.

84

Volume 5, Issue 1 | www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com

COUNTRY AS CORNBREAD AND BISCUITS

I’ve been making both since I was barely able to reach the kitchen counter. It’s just in my nature to do so. So, if you’re like me and know the phrase “sop your plate, pie’s coming,” chances are good that your choice of cornbread or biscuit as a mode of transportation for said sopping dictates a deeper understanding of your actual whereabouts. It’s all in your raising, or rising as the case may be. Southern quick breads such as biscuits and cornbread came about during the precivil war era, as a means to limit the time a wood-fired stove needed stoking, especially during the hot summer months. Friendly debates about whether the addition of sugar in a cornbread recipe proves blasphemous, or perhaps the proper applications for angel biscuits, beaten biscuits, and soda biscuits continue. But, most often cooked by the hands of slaves, their origins can be traced back well before the American South even existed.

It’s because of the efforts of folks like Asheville native, Hanan Shabazz, who affirms this vital role African-Americans play in Southern discernment, that we are able to know the complete story of our palate’s anthropology. Hanan attests that she has spent her entire life using food as a means to make friends with those who she felt could elevate her. Awarded the Southern Foodways Alliance 2020 Ruth Fertel Keeper of the Flame Award, she’s also a culinary mentor for the James Beard Award-Winning restaurant, Benne on Eagle in downtown Asheville, North Carolina. Hanan works closely with Benne’s team to ensure that the history of African-American foodways continues to thrive.

A BRAWL OF SOUTHERN PROPORTIONS Much to our chagrin, pimento cheese isn’t a Southern original, but some of its ingredients are. The Biscuit King himself, and chef-owner of Biscuit Love in Nashville, Tennessee, Karl Worley once weighed in on his favored mayonnaise. While experimenting with pimento cheese recipes, he made no apologies for his lack of affinity for the Greenville, South Carolina icon, Duke’s Mayonnaise. Soon, a host of chefs threw their hats into the ring. BJ Lofton of Riff’s Truck, also located in Nashville, started the trending Twitter hashtag #mayogate, and so ensued the now infamous food fight. For the record, Worley is more of a Hellmann’s kind of guy which actually hails from New York. Pimento cheese became a nationwide classic during the early part of the 20th century, proving a sandwich spread of choice for WWI troops thanks to its delicious portability.

86

Volume 5, Issue 1 | www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com

It’s the actual pimento pepper where the South lays its claim. Founder of Pomona Products, George Riegel requested pimento seeds from the Spanish consulate to test in his red clay Georgia soil. Riegel eventually

became

the

first U.S. farmer to grow the sweet, heart-shaped peppers in 1916.

It was 2013, when Pitmaster Rodney Scott’s family barbecue business burnt to the ground in Hemmingway, South Carolina. A good old-fashioned barn raising commenced, as NPR personality, Debbie Elliott recalls. Southern culinarians from near and far joined forces in producing fundraising events within their respective

WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, TAKE TO THE PORCH

Once considered a status symbol, porch sitting offers connection from our home to the outside world. This specific genre of rest and relaxation came from the necessity to escape summer’s unbearable heat in a Southern home. It wasn’t until the 1980s that the front porch became America’s first mandated architectural feature for the planned community of Seaside, Florida providing nature’s answer to energy efficiency. While porch sitting stands the test of time as an essential element of self-care for many, it’s never been more apparent than now. From socially distanced happy hours, to makeshift performance stages, porch sitting is a favorite Southern past time these days. Whereas professional family pictures aren’t the most COVID-friendly options in capturing this place in time, photographers have also taken to porches for the ultimate in pandemic pivots, the family porch portrait. Maybe those awkward studio family portraits are a permanent thing of the past, and years from now we can look back at this time when families rediscovered their center with neighbors and friends as their lifeline. And, through it all, the porch served as its canvas. We will reach the light at the end of this forsaken tunnel in due time. Until then, pour yourself a glass of sweet tea, strawberry wine, or perhaps Tennessee whiskey, pull up a chair on your porch, and simply sit a spell.

Idyllically situated in the iconic resort community of Palm Beach, Florida, Worth Avenue offers four blocks of world-class shopping seamlessly combined with an ambiance that elevates luxury to an art form in its own right. Graceful coconut palms line the sun-splashed streets and provide a perfect frame for the Mediterranean-inspired architecture of the avenue's trademark storefronts, while tabby concrete sidewalks provide visitors with a stylish strolling surface leading to the 25foot clock tower next to the Atlantic Ocean. Drawn to the area's balmy climate and upscale amenities, some of the planet's best chefs make their homes in Palm Beach, providing residents and visitors with an eclectic mix of expertly crafted ambrosial food and beverage options. But under its shimmering surface, Worth Avenue brings layers of history and mystery to the table. Having a drink in Ta-boo Bar, for instance, isn't just a pleasant interlude with a well-crafted cocktail or glass of ice-cold Champagne to alleviate the raw edges of shopping fatigue— it's sharing a scene with the ghosts of cultural luminaries such as John F. Kennedy and Frank Sinatra or rubbing shoulders with modern-day celebrities while enjoying a lunch worthy of a Tuscan trattoria at Bice Ristorante. The avenue has many nooks and crannies and otherwise off-the-beaten-track treasures that many people never even see, especially if they just drive through. Parking on Worth Avenue is plentiful, free, and safe, so don't be afraid to leave your vehicle and go free-ranging — you never know what sweet surprises and treasures once you step off the main sidewalk and wind your way away from the crowds.

THE ALLEYS

Behind all the glitz and glamor of Worth Avenue's main drag lie the alleyways, where the true heart of Worth Avenue beats. You'll discover serene spaces such as small seating areas tucked away behind a living wall of trailing bougainvillea, hear the soothing music created by clear running fountains, and enjoy the sight of fresh blooming flowers everywhere even if your visit happens to fall in the depth of winter. Whether you're seeking a setting for private contemplation, a personal conversation with a loved one, or simply want to sit and rest your feet after a strenuous bout of shopping, you'll find just the right private oasis in the alleys. The alleys also provide numerous settings for those seeking beautiful locations to take photographs and videos to preserve memories of their visit to Palm Beach. Worth Avenue's most interesting alleys include Via Amore and Via Mizner.

THE COURTYARD AT PIZZA AL FRESCO

As its name implies, Pizza al Fresco provides clientele with the opportunity to enjoy their meals in an outdoor setting. Their courtyard is not merely a pleasant afterthought, however — it's an experience in its own right. Among the carefully cultivated flowers, shrub, vines, and potted palms are two tiny tombstones that give the plaza an enticing air of mystery. The headstones mark the final resting places of two of the region's most intriguing former citizens — a spider monkey and a dog. The monkey, whose name was Johnny Brown, was the companion of renowned Palm Beach architect Addison Mizner, who is said to be the creative force behind Worth Avenue's iconic Mediterranean flavor. The dog's name was Laddie and belonged to prominent socialite couple Morton and Rose Sachs, who requested that their beloved canine companion be laid to rest beside his friend Johnny Brown. Whether your visit to Worth Avenue involves a specific shopping or dining mission or you simply want to soak up the luxurious ambiance, be sure to allow yourself enough time to stray from its beaten path, where you're sure to find your own personal favorites among the pockets of enchantment you'll encounter. RETREAT HOME

Special to LUX Lifestyle

LOWCOUNTRY ELEGANCE Article by Allison Hersh Photos by Richard Leo Johnson

Interior designer Anne Pappas, the owner of Anne Pappas Interiors in Savannah, Georgia, believes that great design, by definition, exercises restraint. When Rob and Nancy Rapp contacted her to oversee the interior design for their new home on Callawassie Island, South Carolina, Anne knew she could help. The Rapps had already retired to Florida, but fell in love with the nature-inspired lifestyle at Callawassie Island, a private 880-acre community located between Hilton Head Island and Beaufort and surrounded by water on three sides. “Callawassie Island is serene, quiet and tucked away,” Anne explains. “It’s a place that feels very special, so I knew the Rapp home needed to reflect the incredible natural beauty of this lush coastal island.” Robb and Nancy Rappp built a new two-story home overlooking the Okatie River and asked Anne to create luxurious Lowcountry-inspired interiors, incorporating some of their existing furniture from their Florida home. From wallpaper and window treatments to fabrics and finishes, Anne strategically blended a variety of design elements inspired by nature, carefully curating the Rapp interiors to achieve the perfect balance.

A member of Coastal Living and Southern Living’s exclusive Designer Network, Anne helped the Rapps trade their Spanish-influenced Florida look for an elegant Lowcountry style, creating a color palette inspired by the natural landscape on Callawassie Island. Anne thoughtfully designed the Rapp home interiors around stunning panoramic views of the Okatie River and the tidal saltmash. She kept the foundational color palette simple, using neutrals as a base with subtle green, silver and blue accents that allow spectacular views of nature to take center stage. Anne added a range of Lowcountry-inspired accents, including a hanging daybed on the wide front porch, a natural tongue-and-groove ceiling in the dining area and Savannah grey brick laid in a herringbone pattern in the mud room. A tabby fireplace outside, crafted from local shells, provided the perfect Lowcountry touch and serves as an ideal spot for the Rapps to gather with family and friends in the winter. In the kitchen, Anne paired solid marble countertops with mossy green custom cabinets. Expansive marble counters, overscale mirrors and stately sconces allow the natural light to dance in the serene master bathroom, creating a spa-like feel. An avid cook, Nancy studied at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and wanted to make sure the kitchen received extra special attention in the design. Combining Anne’s vision and Nancy’s passion, the centerpiece of the Rapp kitchen is a La Cornue gas range with a custom copper hood. The kitchen also includes an oversized butler’s pantry overlooking the river that houses organized spices, dried goods, dozens of well-used cookbooks and a door that leads to a hidden wine room under the stairs. “The kitchen is truly the jewel piece,” Anne explains. “We incorporated sliding barn doors on either side of the stove, which lead to the hidden butler’s pantry, and created a versatile, elegant environment that’s ideal for cooking, relaxing or entertaining.”

Defined by a sense of quiet sophistication, the Rapp home incorporates stylish architectural details, finishes, fabrics and lighting that combine to create a chic sanctuary in the heart of the South Carolina Lowcountry. Best of all, the interiors provide the perfect environment for this active retired couple to pursue their passions, visit with family and entertain friends. “The greatest reward is the fact that Rob and Nancy enjoy every moment in their new home on Callawassie Island,” Anne says. “To me, interior design is about much more than just furniture, furnishings or lighting. I love helping clients elevate their style and live their best life.”

THE WHITE ELEPHANT HOTEL Until recently, this 1920’s luxury hotel could only be found on the Nantucket waterfront. But in 2020, Palm Beach welcomed its own outpost of this boutique property, completely renovating one of the area's first accommodations, the Bradley Park Hotel. A historic hotel listed with the Landmark Preservation Commission, Bradley Park has a storied past. It was originally owned by Colonel Edward R. Bradley, who ran a private and celebrated Beach Club for more than 20 years, serving as a magnet for the business tycoons and high rollers who frequented the salon. In the decades that followed, the hotel remained a mainstay for the seasonal visitors who flocked to South Florida sunshine.
