CONTRIBUTORS ADAM JACOT DE BOINOD

Adam Jacot de Boinod is a British author, most famous for his works about unusual words. He has written three books, the first two (The Meaning of Tingo and Toujours Tingo) looking at words that have no equivalent in the English language, and his latest book (The Wonder of Whiffling) looking at unusual words in English. He worked on the first series of the television panel game QI. His research on the show involved him reading an entire Albanian language dictionary and noting down any words that he found interesting. He formed the idea that there are 27 different words for moustaches and 27 words for eyebrows in Albanian, including, “vetullan” (“very bushy eyebrows”), “vetullor” (“slightly arched eyebrows”) and “vetullosh” (“very thick eyebrows”). After leaving QI, he began to investigate other languages, examining 280 dictionaries and 140 websites. This led to the creation of his first book in 2005, The Meaning of Tingo, a book featuring words which have no equivalent in the English language, “tingo” being a word from the Pascuense language of Easter Island meaning, “to borrow things from a friend’s house, one by one, until there’s nothing left”. He then wrote up a follow-up book entitled Toujours Tingo in 2007. In 2009, de Boinod wrote The Wonder of Whiffling, a book about unusual words in English, the word “whiffling” having several meanings, including, “one who examined candidates for degrees… an officer who cleared the way for a procession, as well as being the name of the man with the whip in Morris dancing.”

“And all at once, summer collapsed into fall.” - Oscar Wilde As summer saunters away and we feel crisper cooler days ahead, we have put together a fun filled issue of ECL. This issue will keep you entertained as the kids are back at school. Our cover model Chandra Johnson is our inspiring women. She developed her childhood passion into a successful career as owner of SOCO Gallery in Charlotte, NC. We sit down with Chandra and talk about style. Most often we think of style as what we wear, but style is truly so much more. It is defined as a distinctive appearance, typically determined by the principles by which something is designed. Style is a distinctive manner of expression, style is about how you walk through a room, how you communicate to another person, how you decorate your home. “A Curated Life - Inside the Authentic Style of Chandra Johnson” pg. 80 We highlight three beautiful homes each with a distinctive style. Interior designer Prudence Bailey shares a Connecticut family home in soothing blues and whites on pg. 117, that is both fashionable and functional. While Amy Lee from Artistic Interiors in Charlotte, NC takes us to two beautiful lake homes pg. 95. Each with their own distinctive style. We are enthralled with the style of rising fashion designer Daniel Gonzalez. pg. 85. His designs are fresh and explosive in color. Style is both an impression and an expression. Pour a glass of wine from one of our favorite East Coast vineyards pg. 37 and catch up on all the fall/winter style trends.

1. Close your eyes and take a deep breath. Using your mind, focus on each part of your face for 15 seconds, starting at the forehead. Simply notice what each part feels like, without judgement. 2. Do the same thing again but consciously relaxing tension and stress from each area for 15 seconds. 3. With a relaxed face, gently place three fingers of both hands over your eyes. Place your little fingers on your closed lips and your thumbs lightly in your ears so that three senses are closed off and you can breathe only through the nose (avoid if nasal breathing doesn’t work for you). OLIVES HELP TAME INFLAMMATION’S FLAMES.

Anything you can do to tame inflammation – the root of so many modern health ills — is a victory for your body. And olives can be a very helpful ally. Adding olives to your plate, either as a snack or worked into meals, delivers polyphenol compounds to your system which can help lower C-reactive protein levels in the bloodstream. Why does this matter? Because C-reactive protein is a marker for inflammation in your body and olives – and their anti-inflammatory polyphenols – help you fight it.

OLIVES ARE THE ‘ANTI’S’ YOU NEED IN YOUR CORNER.

One notable polyphenol that olives deliver is oleuropein, a

chemical compound known for its numerous ‘anti’ qualities. First up, oleuropein an antioxidant, always a good thing in the anti-cancer department. Next, it’s anti-atherogenic which means it helps protect against the formation of plaques in your arteries. (Yes, please!) And it’s also anti-fungal and antimicrobial, boosting your body’s ability to keep external threats at bay. What’s more, oleuropein also helps cut oxidative stress in the brain and is thought to help boost memory as well, making olives a fantastic way to feed your head too.

OLIVES LOVE UP YOUR CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM.

Though olives may be small, they are mighty when it comes to fat, as in, the healthy, monounsaturated kind, which helps maintain good cholesterol (HDL) levels and cuts risk for hardening of the arteries. Another bonus: the monounsaturated fat in olives comes complete with oleic acid, which is linked to lower blood pressure and better overall cardiovascular health, so bring ‘em on.

OLIVES MAKE EYES AND SKIN SHINE.

If you’ve got eyes and skin to keep youthful, then you’ll want to have olives on hand. Olives are rich in vitamin A, an antioxidant that’s essential for protecting the cornea and maintaining eye health. It can help fend off age-related eye problems such as macular degeneration, cataracts and glaucoma. When it comes to skin, it can help reduce wrinkles. Olives also include vitamin E as well as the antioxidant compounds lutein and zeaxanthin, all of which offer additional eye and skin-health support.

OLIVES CAN HELP CURB APPETITE.

If you’re wrestling with a few unwanted pounds, olives can help here too, thanks to their high fiber count as well as their monounsaturated fats which are linked to belly fat loss and better insulin sensitivity. To help tame appetite in a healthy way at mealtime, before you tuck in, try pre-gaming with a small serving of olives. Both the filling fiber and monounsaturated fatty acids in the olives will support better digestion and stimulate satiety hormones, so you feel full sooner, making putting the fork down a little easier.

OLIVES WILL ADD ENERGY TO YOUR DAY.

Another thing that olives have got going for them is glutathione which is essential to energy production, and getting enough can be the difference between powering through your day or tanking long before day’s end. When you add more olives to your day, several studies show that you’ll ensure significant increases in glutathione levels in the blood, which will in turn keep you feeling energetic. In addition, olives, particularly black ones, deliver a nice dose of iron, which is also important for energy production and immune system function – so dig in to keep your health humming.

Most business owners will combine business trips with leisure time. Or, when on leisure trips, will conduct some sort of business. You can take deductions for business-related expens-

MEALS

Business and networking meals are now deductible 100% for 2021 and 2022. This is a huge shakeup in the tax deduction world. Many business owners forget to use their business card at restaurants and miss out in writing meals off. Save your receipts and document who you were with.

START UP COSTS

What are the items or services you bought before your business went live? Did you set up an LLC? Did you contribute your personal laptop? These are items considered as your contributions into the business and therefore expenses on your books. Many owners forget to get these items onto the books because they did not have a business checking account or business credit card when they bought them. An accountant can layer them into your financials via a journal entry to get them included on your books.

HOME OFFICE

WFH became a big thing in 2020. I like to think I was one of the early adopters of the trend back in 2011 when it wasn’t very popular. If you work from home, this is a big one most forget. In simplicity, add up all of your utility costs, HOA dues, and repairs & maintenance costs for the year. Take those amounts and multiply it by the fraction of the square feet of your office

es (and part airfare and lodging) even if part of the trip includes personal vacation time. One caveat, if you have family along, you cannot deduct expenses for family members accompanying you on a business trip unless there’s a business reason for them to attend.

RETIREMENT SAVINGS

Retirement planning is something most business owners do not think about, as they are just thinking about making money and operating day-to-day. If you have a healthy cash flow that can have a portion set aside for savings, retirement plans are the best way to have a tax deduction and save for your future. The tax benefits you’ll receive depend on the retirement plan you have – IRA, 401(k), or one of many others. Businesses can establish inexpensive 401(k) plans with higher contributions for owners. Other retirement account options are available for small businesses as well and have low cost entry.

HEALTH INSURANCE

Depending on the type of business entity you own, you may be eligible to take advantage of a self-employed health insurance deduction on your personal return. This includes your premium cost and could be pretty significant, if you have your family on it as well. Most business owners do not realize this can be a deduction and run it through their personal funds.

My first learning experience was to manage my expectations. I certainly do not look like I did 30 years ago and WHY should I expect the guys to look that way. Getting over the fact that perhaps those “puppy love” feelings when I met someone 30 years ago will not be the same. Honestly, 30 years ago I was looking for a partner that I wanted to have children with, be financially set with as we both worked hard and could have fun with. Now, I am looking for someone who is kind, supportive, has good listening skills, empathy and compassion! Basically, I am looking for a woman in a man’s body? I am working on allowing myself to be vulnerable. Realizing if I want a good partner, I must also be a good partner.

TASTE S AV O R

"The elements of a fall harvest board really can be made special by pulling in some of your favorite autumn flavors. I love including pears and apples on fall boards, as they are in season and add such a beautiful variety of colors to the board depending on what variety you choose. Cinnamon and other fall spices are some of my favorites to include on a board. You can invite this element onto a board by adding a cinnamon apple spice jam or a maple butter. Fresh or dried cranberries add that deep, beautiful red that we all love to see in the fall. And, of course, any kind of hearty nut like a pecan or a walnut brings us back to some of the cookies of fall during our childhood."

ART & CULTURE

NAVIGATING ART FAIRS LIKE A PRO: TIPS, TRICKS, AND AVOIDING THE PITFALLS by Nelia Verano The contemporary art movement is a force that has required all sellers in the art market—galleries, auction houses, private art dealers, online platforms and the like—to constantly evolve to meet the demands of an increasingly savvy and global art market. Combined with the rise in digital accessibility and incredible technological advancements, it is no surprise that global sales of art reached into the billions in recent years. Art fairs, less often called shows, are a relatively new platform that offer the public access to hundreds of art galleries and artists under one roof, and have had tremendous influence on the expansion of and accessibility to contemporary art. The proliferation of art fairs is no surprise, considering that marketplace concepts

ART & CULTURE have been around for hundreds of years, and offer important exposure and visibility to those selling wares. Religious festivals, artisan markets, the World’s Fair, craft shows, and the rise of art exhibitions in the 1700’s are just a few examples of precursors that eventually led to the rise in visual art fairs. In just two decades, the number of art fairs worldwide has skyrocketed from around 10 to almost 60 annually. Art fairs, in addition to offering the public a unique venue for viewing artwork and an array of benefits to galleries, have also become dazzling social scenes, places for fun outings with friends and family, and spectacles of the amazing, the over-the-top, and sometimes, the ludicrous. Take Maurizio Cattalan, the artist who duck-taped a banana to his gallerist’s wall at the Art Basel Miami fair in 2019. Word spread quickly, confused and amused patrons scratched their heads thinking it might be a joke (the title of the work was Comedian), and photos of the installation spread like wildfire on social media. It sold for $120,000 just a few hours later. Booths at art fairs can become outrageous installations of other-worldly places, display strangely juxtaposed sculptures (like Jeff Koons’ Dogpool Ladder), and present spellbinding performance art often featuring the artists themselves as performers. Fairs also provide compelling programming featuring artists, celebrity collectors, curators, and dealers, all of whom offer cultural and artistic discourse around any number of topics. As much as the Picasso’s draw crowds, these other aspects make arts fairs more appealing, accessible, and intriguing to a much broader audience seeking unique cultural experiences. Whether your desire is to attend an art fair for sheer entertainment, or have a more purposeful goal in learning about emerging artists to add to your collection, here are some tips that will ensure a positive and memorable art fair experience.

While they offer a highly efficient way to engage new bodies of collectors and the community in just a few days, it’s important to identify what your overarching goal is, and also leave room for the surprises. ART & CULTURE

ART AS JOY, AND JOY AS ART By Nelia Verano Joy—defined as a feeling of great pleasure and happiness—was a state lost upon most during the pandemic, especially when the county’s racial endemic and raging division were at an all-time high. The uncertainty, fear, and emotional discord was palpable, both on an individual and collective level, and efforts to seek and cultivate joy were often replaced with efforts to survive—physically, mentally, and emotionally. JOY is a visual art exhibition that introduces joy as an innate state that cannot be exhausted, and a beautiful byproduct of relationship and interconnectedness, no matter the barriers. On September 25, Elder Gallery of Contemporary Art (Charlotte, NC) will unveil the works of four game-changing artists, who explore their joy both as individual creators and as collaborators and friends who have given each other space to shine. This exhibition is a celebration—of creativity, of relationship, and of the powerful, life-changing outcomes of women coming together.

WINDY O’CONNOR Windy O’Connor, 2021, Acrylic on canvas

Windy O’Connor has always been an artist, even before she began painting. “Growing up, art was always around me and always a part of our lives,” Windy recalls, noting her long-time involvement with her childhood community theatre and her education in theatre and interior design. To create something that brings others joy, a mantra that is embodied in the exhibition, is at the heart of Windy’s work, which spans creation over three decades in collections, exhibitions, and spaces across the globe. Her inclusion in JOY was born accidentally, when Carla (who is a neighbor of Windy’s) wandered into her studio with a work of art she had begun. Carla invited Windy to add to it, and the work ultimately became a layer-upon-layer painting with each of their contributions. The spirit of Carla and Windy creating something together, and the joy that it brought both of them, was the spark that lit the fire for JOY and the entire premise behind it. Her artistic achievements, led by her driving force to create and connect on a daily basis, has led to her extensive line of textiles, wallpaper, clothing, and home accessories. Her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions in both gallery and museum spaces, and in local and national publications. www.windyoconnor.com

NEWS FLASH: COMFORT IS STILL IN! (YAY) Read all about it!! Our comfy favs are still trending - from oversized cable knit sweaters, wide palazzo pants, lounging sets, classic denim to overall effortlessly chic looks. As we transition out of our post-lockdown cocoons and into a world of opportunities to experiment with new looks and attend glitzy events, simple, timeless, and elegant yet cozy styles are exactly what we need. Celine’s uber-cool French It Girl looks, Raf Simons’ oversized sweater vests, Tommy Hilfiger’s classic Americana style cable knit sweater, Off-White’s cloud-inspired loosefit knit turtleneck, and Marc Jacobs’ neo-futurism lounging sets are among some of the many brands that embraced more laid-back silhouettes, uncomplicated classics, and minimalistic silhouettes.

Y2K POP CULTURE Think of Xtina, Eve, P!nk, Destiny’s Child, Britney Spears, Mary J Blige, Fergie, Gwen Stefani, Nelly Furtado, Kylie Minogue, Avril Lavigne (just to name a few) and more Y2K pop culture icons, and you’ll have a very clear idea of one of the trending looks for Fall/Winter 2021-22 Ready-To-Wear. We saw some “apple bottom” jeans n’ boots with the fur, low rise bottoms, electric neon shades, music-video ready shades, headscarves, sky-high platform sandals and moody creepers, geometric cutouts, tiny crop tops, and extra details that are sure to induce some nostalgia of the styles seen in the early 2000s on our favorite artists. The Y2K styles that are re-emerging echoes this new era we are in, incorporating styles that arose during the beginning of a new millenia that embodied the excitement of endless opportunities for new advancements in technology, society and more - which may give us some deja vu as we look forward to a completely post-pandemic world. Fearless, limitless, and joyfully curious - Y2K styles with a sprinkle of Gen Z result in easily transmutable looks that can please different age groups, style preferences, and provide creative freedom for endless combinations. Unleash your inner Y2K pop star with looks from Miu Miu, Dion Lee, Balmain, Rachel Comey, Chanel, Off-White, Versace, and Dolce & Gabbana, just to name a few.

NEW ACADEMIA New horizons lead to smart fashion that inspires us to take on a new language, go on spontaneous expeditions or begin to checkmark your goal lists. From collegiate pleats, preppy collars, 70s textures and color schemes, boxy crop blazers, wide legged pant suits, smart sweater vests, country club cable knits, loafers, golf sneakers, baseball caps, equestrian influences, tartan and plaid prints, to modest turtlenecks - many academia aesthetic styles were seen, taking notes from all we have learned despite the circumstances. The New Academia styles seen are in reference to all we entertained ourselves with that have also helped us grow whether it was to expand our knowledge, our self-love, or even our overall wisdom. Celine, Alice + Olivia, Raf Simons, Peter Do, Sacai, Gucci, and Versace are some of the many designers that embraced academic styles.

ROARING 20’S 2.0 Since we are approaching closer to entering 2022, it is vital to remember that we are in the 20s of this new millenia, so it makes sense that fashion week decided to include some glamour from our predecessor of the Roaring 20’s. With Gatsby in mind and the glitz and glamour associated with it, we saw multiple styles inspired by the luxury emerging from that era. As the anticipation grows for more sparkling outings, the Met Gala comeback, and the overall excitement for the finer things, the New Roaring 20s welcomes glittering jewels, fuzzy faux furs, opera-ready gloves, theatrical lengths, rich texture play, dramatic coats, statement patterns and prints, art-deco elements, voluminous silhouettes, red carpet styles and gala-ready looks. Fashion can sometimes be a wonderful oxymoron by trending loungewear AND extravagant and glittery looks. It’s best to have the best of both worlds! Some of the many collections that included splashy avant-garde styles include Carolina Herrera, Dolce & Gabbana, Sacai, Burberry, Jason Wu, Rodarte, Alice + Olivia, Chanel, and Miu Miu.

For this Fall/Winter 2021-22 Ready-To-Wear season, we definitely got to see countless puffy styles in all shapes and sizes from puff crop jackets, floor-length and cocoon-like quilted puffer coats, to even puffy sweater vests were seen. NEW HEIGHTS FOR FASHION A wonderful gift that we received for this season are many shiny and new fashion moments that leave us excited for more and expand the industry’s horizons even further for more feel good fashion moments. From up and coming designers that defy the laws of gravity like Robert Wun and Peter Do, K-Pop increasingly being key to trending styles, BTS becoming even more fashion icons as brand ambassadors for Louis Vuitton, Met Gala (finally) back on September 13, the amazing Phoebe Philo’s glorious return to fashion with her own fashion brand, New York Fashion Week returning to packed live shows in September, increasing digitization of luxury fashion, celebrating more the beauty of diversity, more logo prints for increased brand identity, Balenciaga redefining couture and Gucci collaborating with Balenciaga (OMG) among many more fashion moments that have created new heights for the industry.

The exciting collaboration presented this season of Gucci and Balenicaga is a nice peek into how fashion is evolving into a seamless and more fun and limitless creative space. Alesssandro Michelle, creative director of Gucci said this about the collaboration: "In this sense, Gucci becomes for me a hacking lab, made of incursions and metamorphoses. An alchemical factory of contaminations where everything connects to anything. A place where thefts and explosive reactions happen: a permanent generator of sparkles and unpredictable desires." And, this is certainly what is sparking fashion to become more and more like.

READY-TO-WEAR TRENDS: ACCESSORIES AND MORE By Sharon Jane - @itssharonjane

What would everyday trends be without those special stand-out details? When it comes to completing any outfit, accessories are a vital way of doing so especially when adding statement pieces to further self-expression. So many of the extra touches seen for Fall/Winter 2021-22 Ready-To-Wear had a certain alchemy of glamour and creative freedom, an atmosphere of effortless individuality and hope for more and more glitzy outings. While observing the looks that are trending for the season, it is evident that the accessories, colors and prints trending go hand in hand with the trending looks in perfect harmony. From extending our love for bucket hats, sparkly statement earrings, to the season’s most seen colors and prints, here are some of the trending extra details:

HATS + MORE HEADGEAR Whether they are bad hair day savers or the effortlessly cool addition for any outfit, hats of all shapes and sizes are trending everywhere. Classic beanies, Equestrian helmet inspired shapes, Ivy League baseball caps, retro Ear Flap hats, modernized Fedoras, fuzzy printed berets, theatrical wide brim Gaucho hats, and the beloved bucket hats are some of the trending hats for the season. The Bucket Hat is definitely still a fan favorite since it was perhaps the most seen style of hat (yay!). So, that means we can still embrace the 90s and add a statement bucket hat for the best sprinkle of cool to any outfit. Designers that included the cherry-on-top hats include Burberry, Victoria/Tomas, Marc Jacobs, Rodarte, Mark Fast, Tommy Hilfiger, Gucci, Celine, Stand Studio, Alberta Ferretti, Off White, Dolce & Gabbana, Anna Sui, and Tod’s. Now, hats were not the only trending head gear. Although for this season hair accessories were kept to a close minimum with some simple headbands seen like for Prada or Dolce & Gabbana, headscarves are making a huge comeback! Perhaps inspired by the romantic nostalgia of the 60s as seen on our most beloved fashion icons like Audrey Hepburn and Jackie O, vintage style headscarves are trending for this season. The style was seen in labels such as Versace, Anna Sui, Annakiki, Max Courtesy of ‘TOMMY HILFIGER

GLAM OUT! As hope increases for a nearby pandemic-free world, the allure for all things fuzzy, furry, blingy and glam is greater than never before. From rich textures, pretty plumes, dazzling sparkles, jaw dropping earrings, faux fur extravaganza, and opera gloves were some of the pretty glitzy and luxury craving fulfilling accessories seen for Fall/Winter 2021-22 Ready-To-Wear trending looks. From Versace’s geometric fresh new logo printed opera gloves, Gucci x Balenciaga’s mega chain link chokers, sequined suits and faux fur stoles, Burberry’s to die for bunny fuzzy oversized bag, to Marc Jacobs’s bigger than live puff capes this season took us to glam camp and said more is more! Other designers that also embraced this include Prada, Fendi, Rodarte, Carolina Herrera, Acne Studios, Miu Miu, Simone Rocha, Alberta Ferretti, Dolce & Gabbana, and Ami just to name a few.

THESE SHOES WERE DEFINITELY MADE FOR WALKING... How can I go on about trending accessories for Fall/Winter 2021-22 Ready-To-Wear without mentioning shoes?! The shoes seen for this season certainly had a majority of a comfortable factor as fashion increasingly embraces more walkable shoes, although there were many sky high exceptions (although most seen were platform and chunky so they are still very walkable). Styles of shoes seen trending include smart platform loafers, platform creepers, furry and fuzzy boots, statement knee high boots, unique mid-heeled slingback pumps, metallic slouch boots, contrast toe riding boots, chunky oxfords, comfy slippers, jeweled shoes, strappy sandals, v-cut vamp heels, funky clogs, and eye-catching platform Mary Janes were some of the styles seen most. Some designers that showcased trendy shoes include Versace, Rachel Comey, Gucci x Balenciaga, Loewe, Tod’s, Chanel, Miu Miu, Dries Van Noten, Acne Studios, Jil Sander, Tory Burch, Schiaparelli, Peter Do, Balmain, Prada, Marni, Prabal Gurung, Nina Ricci, Proenza Schouler, Dior, Carolina Herrera, Thebe Magugu, Louis Vuitton, The Row, Altuzarra and many more!

From bold earrings, fashion harnesses, patterned tights, bold socks, waist cinching belts, oversized chain necklaces, and much more were some of the ideas we can feel inspired by to discover our favorite statement pieces for a most memorable and personal outfit creation. Some moodboard ready collections include Acne Studios, Gucci, Fendi, Nina Ricci, Rodarte, Woo Young Mi, Miu Miu, Molly Goddard, Dior, Max Mara, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, Zimmerman, Simone Rocha, Mashama, and Givenchy.

PURSES Continuing on with statement pieces, statement purses were also essential for Fall/Winter 2021-22 Ready-To-Wear. The Baguette purse is still trending with more bold and artsy remixes, oversized fit-all purses, chain handle bags, fuzzy and cuddly purses, disco fever embellished bags, hands-free necklace, crossbody or fanny pak purses that are very practical, padlock details and geometric and bright Kiss Lock and Turn Latch purses were seen this season. Some designers that are worth checking out purse styles include Gucci x Balenciaga, Versace, Altuzarra, Dior, Acne Studios, Armani, Louis Vuitton, Valentino, Miu Miu, Burberry, Issey Miyake, Givenchy, Etro, and Chanel among many.

The gallery’s ambition has resulted in its participation in several notable art fairs, including its debut presentation in the prestigious Armory Show in New York City from September 9-12, 2021, where it will present a solo booth of paintings by renowned artist Clare Rojas. In addition to the exhibition program, SOCO Gallery also presents an ongoing series of artist talks and cultural seminars. SOCO Shop, located in the gallery, offers a unique range of art and lifestyle books, limited edition artist prints and artist designed objects. It is no wonder that Chandra’s remarkable sense of style and eye is heavily influenced and intertwined with her love for art and creative craft. Her definition of style, and how to live that definition, goes far beyond the realm of her wardrobe, and is the result of a carefully curated, thoughtful approach to every part of her life. Style, for Chandra, is really about cause (her authenticity) and effect (her style), and how she wears her clothing—exuding confidence, warmth, and sensibility—is just as important as what she wears. The LUX team had the privilege of conversing with Chandra in SOCO Gallery’s lovely garden patio, and what transpired was a real, intelligent conversation around her philosophy on style, and the impact that collecting contemporary art has had on her life, including how she dresses each day. For this story, we moved away from the Gucci’s and runway fashion talk, and delved into Chandra’s story about art—and how style really is a matter of the heart.

How did your love for visual art begin, and how has your interest in and pursuit of art intersected with your lifestyle, and how you curate it? Growing up in Oklahoma, I was influenced and exposed to art through my sister’s interest and talent. Her childhood paintings covered our walls next to two Georgia O’Keeffe posters my mother loved. I remember visiting the Philbrook and Five Civilized Tribes Museum where I was exposed to Native American artists, Jerome Tiger and Kay WalkingStick. I left Oklahoma after college for work in New York and overseas, and it was then that my interest in art (and culture) really ignited. I began collecting photography at first, then moved into furniture, ceramics, sculpture and painting. My husband, Jimmie, is very involved and loves it almost as much as I do. Over time, our approach has shifted more toward art patronage of contemporary artists we know and love, which has been the most rewarding way to grow a collection.

82

Volume 5, Issue 5 | www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com

What are your sources of inspiration, in addition to visual art? A big source of inspiration comes from my environment, surroundings and travels. After producing a few project-based exhibitions in Charlotte, I opened SOCO Gallery. Our goal over the past 6 years has been to bring international, emerging and mid-career artists to our community while simultaneously supporting and promoting regional artists. We call it the Prism effect -- bringing new and interesting ideas to North Carolina that engage us in a global art conversation + giving our local artists a platform. Are there consistent themes throughout your home, your art collection, or otherwise? Has one been an influence on another or vice versa? In all aspects of life, Jimmie and I believe in taking risks and pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone. This theme definitely shows up in our home, art collection and business endeavors. At SOCO Gallery, we recently had the opportunity to add an annex space to our gallery. Our intention with this new space is to push our current program, highlighting more experimental artwork and art practices. It will provide a bold, new layer to what we currently do. What is your favorite art piece? Why? It is hard to choose a favorite piece of artwork, but recent-

Gonzalez, who is in the process of launching his career wear line, has been designing and tailoring for years—with dance costumes and wedding dresses being two of his earliest endeavors. His breakout design, a gown for the 2018 Ryder Cup in Versailles, gave him the push to begin studying fabrics and techniques. Gonzalez says that the opportunity served as a catalyst, leading him to “make it (becoming a designer) official.” Through it all, he notes that garment detail and fit have always been crucial to his design ethos. “My eye is very much drawn to details,” Gonzalez says. “Growing up I would paint and draw, and through dance you are taught to be precise, deliberate and diligent. I have a critical eye, so I can tell when something doesn’t fit or isn’t the right length. That’s always sparked the need to make sure everything is correct.” While a strong focus on detail and structure might be Gonzalez’ bread and butter, it’s his penchant for vibrant colors that has truly made a splash in the Charlotte fashion scene. “I feel like the fact that I’m Latino and grew up in a tropical place sets me apart,” Gonzalez says. “I’m inspired by vibrance and I love to play with color, or even the lack of color. Sometimes the best way to highlight is with a complete contrast.” Thoughtfully placed alongside Gonzalez’ more colorful clothing are elegant staples made from neutrals and pearly white silks— some of the top sellers among his local customer base. RETREAT DESIGN

by Susan Gray photography Laura Sumrak

Artistic Design was the Interior Designer for the Swedick Residence, a gorgeous, casual, lake front home representing a timeless interior that will outlast the trends. The design intent was not only to be beautiful, but it also functional for a family of five, and the design team incorporated durable materials and a layout conducive for entertaining and spending time with family. Artistic Interiors enjoyed being able to create unique spaces within this home including the custom breakfast room nook. While this home leans towards classic, it still has many modern elements mixed into the design like the linear fireplace in the bedroom wrapped in stacked marble stone.

For two years, Amy Lee worked sideby-side with the owner of the Kitchen and bath shop, a retired NYC firefighter and cabinet designer who mentored her while she honed in on her knowledge of kitchen and bath design. This collaboration ultimately inspired Amy to move to New York City to further and refine her design skills.

GRANDMILLENNIAL STYLE: HOW THE PAST AND PRESENT MERGE FOR A COHESIVE AESTHETIC By Farris Wu, Founder and CEO at DecorMatters The latest fashion trend for millennials is a look called “granny chic” or “grandmillennial”, which involves donning vintage-style pieces, like crochet sweaters and eyeglass chains. But it doesn’t stop there – people are also adorning their homes with similar interior design schemes. It’s a timeless trend that epitomizes elegance, nostalgia, and charm through chipped paintwork, floral wallpaper, antique paintings, fragile china, crocheted throws, and faded fabrics. This revival of homey design elements has arisen as people search for old, rare items with a unique story and soul, not just clones coming off a conveyor line from Amazon or IKEA.

Every room tells a story, and decorating your home follows the same principles as a brilliant book. The main protagonist is the focal point – the bright-colored sofa, reclaimed barn door headboard, or woven geometric carpet. The secondary characters are the textures, patterns, and colors, which add depth and interest. But as grandmillennial’s main focus is to breed pure nostalgia, you can accentuate more than one element. For example, the centerpiece may be a bold floral wallpaper, but to create an aesthetically pleasing design throughout your home, you must mix and match more floral patterns. Even the lace for the window curtains can incorporate a floral style, but keep it subtle not to overpower the room. Another focal point is sometimes needed to balance out the flowers’ powerful presence. Statement lighting does the trick: a sizeable french window painted white or a chandelier with a draping frame and antique black finish. Natural lighting also evokes the feeling of being in a botanical garden. Furthermore, when using fresh flowers and floral prints, choose a color palette, stick to it, and use various hues: Neutrals, pastels, and blues are very trendy this season. If you go for pastels, make sure to add accent walls and pops of color throughout your home to connect the rooms. Fresh pink roses in an antique china vase paired with a flowery, upholstered sofa and a 1970s footrest are guaranteed to have made an appearance in your grandparents’ home. But update this look by incorporating plain pastel throws and fluffy-textured pillows.

ANTIQUES AND RETRO PRINTS

Antique, repurposed, and retro pieces can build up a vintage-style scheme, but the look needs layering. Each person’s perception of grandmillenial is unique to their own story, so the most important thing is to incorporate your favorite mismatch pieces that have meaning to you.

RETREAT DESIGN

Perhaps you have a Tiffany-esque favrile glass technique lamp, a dark oak wood side table, and a Moroccon ottoman floor pillow – what a match. Always add luxe elements such as rich fabrics with deep coloring to offer stability and calm amongst the beautiful imperfection and sentimental touches. If you have decided to go wild with antique paintings, stay consistent with the frame designs to bring some regularity. And varied lighting embodies a modern tone and cohesive aesthetic. These tensions between the old and the new create visual interest and express a person’s unique personality.

On the DecorMatters app, we are seeing more and more users shopping for small decorations like vintage artwork, timeless antique prints, and tapestries. And many users upload their own items to decorate within the app, such as family photos and their own furniture. People are longing to unlock the nostalgia and backstory of their furniture. For those who are not wanting to redecorate from scratch, sometimes some needlepoint pillows and a tasseled lampshade are all that is needed to add that touch of granny chic to an existing mid-century modern, Scandinavian, or farmhouse interior. What’s certain is that buying second-hand from small businesses and thrift stores is essential to find those affordable, unique, and homey pieces – not to mention all the DIY opportunities. With grandmillennial stealing the hearts of more and more people, which style will you choose?

FASHIONABLE & FUNCTIONAL Interior Designer Prudence Bailey Photography by Stephane Kossman Prudence Bailey thrives on the joy her clients feel and share after revealing an exquisitely transformed room. “I seek to truly understand my clients’ style. I work hard to use interior design as a means to bring to life their vision and personality. I also want to make the process enjoyable the whole way through for my clients by being financially transparent, positive, easy to work with and results oriented.” Bailey says.

Prudence and her Connecticut client who had recently purchased and renovated their grandparents home to create the perfect sanctuary for their young family set out to transform a multi- purpose living room space. The rooms needed to be fashionable as well as functional. This was the first room in the home they worked on together and it needed to be a fresh look that incorporated some of their existing furniture. It had to be a multi-purpose space used by the couple as well as their children. As the couple entertains it needed to have multiple seating areas and spaces for conversation and gathering.

RETREAT

For the overall design concept she created a place to come and sit by the fire and watch TV in what her clients call their Winter Living Room. It needed to feel soothing and calm without being cold. The white backdrop of their existing chair and sectional needed to have color and some patterns layered in to add depth, texture and warmth. A piece of modern art in blues, greens, and blacks became the inspiration for the color story. The blue/green color palette was selected for its freshness and was utilized in fabrics, ceiling color and furniture.

RETREAT

To anchor one end of the room a game table was put in which could double for homework, drinks, etc. She upholstered the curved banquet in the same fabric as the chairs. Subtle details like the chair upholstery legs and window treatments really finish this room and make the space pop. By keeping the fireplace mantle and surrounding space in the same white as the rest of the room, it allowed for great sculpture to anchor yet not overpower the mantle. A favorite feature is the game table chairs. “I love fashion and dressmaker details are the little touches that can make something be subtle yet standout. The fully upholstered chairs including the legs are so beautiful with the Martyn Lawrence Bullard fabric!” The room is long and narrow and proposed a bit of a challenge. “Since we already had plenty of seating, we needed to think what went at the other end of the room that would fit the space and be functional for them. We chose adding a game table to the room where they could utilize it as a game table or eat while watching TV.” The high gloss ceiling above the chairs is beautiful and unique. It’s so stunning and a real showstopper with the HVL chandelier.
