Hebron Highlights 2006 - 2007 The Weber Family

Ralph Baron

The Wallace Family

Although I am a ‘new’ staff member this year, I first started in 2003 doing some Physics and ICT teaching. Last year I had a year out of school to do some computer studies and have now re-joined the staff as head of Computer Services. I originally come from the UK but have spent nearly half my life in Asia (Pakistan, Thailand and India). My wife teaches Chemistry and Biology and we have two daughters studying at university in the UK and a son in Standard 12 at Hebron.

G'day! We have joined the Hebron family from Perth, Australia. We heard about Hebron through missionary friends whose children are students here. We had been praying for many years about working cross-culturally, so we were very excited to hear that there was a need for an ICT administrator and nursing work at Hebron. After fourteen months of e-mails and preparation (including the joy of having baby number three) we received confirmation just seven weeks before the start of term! This meant a lot of hurried final preparations. Our family consists of Roger, Suzanne, Emily (9), Jack (7) and Hannah (1). We feel so privileged to be working with the staff and students of Hebron and appreciate the support and friendship of those around us. Coming to India has been the fulfilment of a lifelong dream and trust that God will use us to be a blessing to those we come into contact with.

Alana Johnson Kiaora! I'm one of the nurses working in Hebron and I come from a beautiful place called Aotearoa, New Zealand. How did I come to Hebron? Well… I didn't even know about Hebron, I was traveling around India and ended up in Ooty and I met the lovely Mohan and Jennifer Das in Mizpah Home. They showed me around Hebron and about a month later I was working there. Amazing how God works. I have met some amazing people; most people here have crazy stories of how God has worked in their lives. I have come to respect young and old and really want to learn more from them. Arohanui!

Justin Hockey I came to Hebron in 1989 with my family. My father taught Physics whilst my mother was a nurse. We stayed for three years. I completed my schooling and university in Brisbane, Australia. As I neared the end of teacher training, I was unsure about exactly where God would have me. I decided I would apply to Hebron as an IG. I couldn't see myself staying longer than six months. God had other plans. Soon, I was on my way back as a staff member. As well as being a part of the Hebron music department I help out with Standard 11 Boys dorm, bible studies and various other things.

We are from Buln Buln, in the rural area of West Gippsland in Victoria, Australia. We have two daughters; Elizabeth (21) and Sara (16). Elizabeth has just completed nursing studies and Sara is in Standard 11 at Hebron. We have been interested in missions since we've been married (25 years!), but situations prevented us from being further involved. After leaving the police force, Des had the opportunity to visit China with MMM. Several subsequent trips occurred and he became more interested in the work there. God was working on Heather at the same time. We were challenged by the message in a missions meeting which was given by John Barclay. He suggested we visit Hebron as IGs. We came as a family for three months in 2005. We couldn't get the place out of our system… and returned this year!

Trevor & Marian Briggs

We came to Hebron from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, UK because of our friends Ralph and Dagmar Baron. They contacted us New Year 2006 to ask if we would cover for the Cameron's sabbatical year. Our first reaction was, “For a whole year in India?” We re-read the e-mail including the address. It had been sent to a closed account which we hadn't used for 6 years. The email Ralph sent to our proper address hadn't got through. So we took a bit more notice, prayed and talked to our family and friends. Our children said, “Go for it”. So here we are. Trevor is teaching Standards 10-12 Design and Technology IGCE and AS levels. Marian is teaching Standard 8 Food Technology. We are also Dorm Parents to Glenrock. We have three grown-up children.

Karin Neff My name is Karin Neff and I'm from Germany. When I left India six years ago (after teaching the children of missionaries, who are at Hebron School now), I thought: “This is my country, if God also wants it, then I will come back some day”. When I visited a family in Ooty last summer I went to Union Church and Karin Sharon listened to Mr Reid preaching about Abraham. This touched my heart and so the whole process started and God worked everything out for me. At the beginning I taught in Junior School but soon there was another chance and challenge to teach German as a Modern Language in Middle and Senior School. I enjoy the small classes with very nice and keen students. I also enjoy helping in other activities; I'm involved with the 6.14ers bible club and babysitting. It's a privilege to be here and meet so many lovely international people.

Sharon Wilson I graduated from Christ College, Bangalore in the spring of 2006 with an Arts degree in Media Studies. I have lived in the Nilgiris, Coonoor, for the most part of my life. Since leaving University I have moved back home with my parents, who now live in Ooty. Hebron has never been strange to me, having grown up in guest homes which catered to many hundreds of Hebronites over the years. I have been quite accustomed to the school, although I never dreamed I'd be on staff, let alone work in the Nilgiris. I am on a one year contract helping to expand and maintain the Alumni Department under the guidance of Ian McCabe. I hope my time here in school will give me direction to focus on my higher studies and / or a clearer view of my professional interests.

The Morris Family

The Morris family is from Northern Ireland. Steve and Rhonda have four girls: Amy-Ruth (15), Suzanna (12), Leah (7) and Alyssa (4). Steve is not a new-comer to boarding schools as he was born to missionary parents in Congo and spent several years in Ivory Coast. Both Steve and Rhonda taught at Vavoua International School in Ivory Coast before coming to Hebron. They have a heart for mission and missionary kids and feel privileged to be part of the Hebron team.

Tim Taylor

The Riley family

Timothy Taylor arrived in July, from a sleepy English village just south of Cambridge. Five days prior to flying for India, he completed his second year of teaching Design and Technology in an English state school. He presently teaches KS2 and KS3 D&T and one Standard 11 mathematics class. Mr Taylor has enjoyed participating in the student versus staff events and joined many of the cycling activities run by the school. He is glad to be at Hebron School and values the many opportunities to learn and to teach. Hello, we are the Buckinghams - Ralph, Hannah, Caleb (5) and Elijah (3) - from England. We heard about Hebron six years ago when Ralph led a leadership and outdoor activity training course for Christian youth workers at Avalanche. We have been thinking and praying about coming to Hebron ever since! Prior to coming here, Ralph was working with young people who had difficult and challenging behaviour and had been excluded from mainstream school. Hannah is a social worker and was working with young people who had committed serious criminal offences and were at risk of going to prison. All very different from life at Hebron! Here, Ralph teaches science, chemistry, ICT and maths, while Hannah helps out in DPD. Together, we are dorm parents for the Standard 11 boys in Cypress Court, which we are really enjoying.

Robyn Welsby I'm Robyn and I come from Pembrokeshire Wales' best kept secret (it's a beautiful place… and of course I'm not biased!). Teaching abroad in a mission kind of situation was always something I thought I would like to do, and I heard about Hebron while I was doing teacher training. I put it to the back of my mind for two years while I taught Music in a secondary school in England. I began feeling very comfortable in my job there and that was when I felt God was reminding me about Hebron. I looked on the website and saw that the school was looking for a string teacher and wanted to start up GCSE and AS level Music….it all seemed to fit and so here I am! As well as teaching Music, I am dorm support for the 'Shire' boys and help with 7-up. All good fun! I'm very happy to be here…the rain and the mountains aren't that dissimilar from Wales after all!

Nigel, Margaret, Jonathan (Std 8), Stuart (Std 7), Alex (Std 4) and Ben (Std 2) are from Ipswich, England. Our home church is Colchester Road Baptist Church, a very large and lively evangelical church, where Nigel helped with music, Margaret interpreted services in sign language and helped in youth work and the boys were involved in everything they possibly could be!! Until the start of 2006 we had never heard of Hebron, but God had plans for us!! After a lot of praying, enquiring and some more praying it became clear that God wanted us at Hebron. So here we are!! Nigel is Head of Modern Languages and Margaret is in the Learning Support Department.

Sheba Kumar

Deepa Tharien

I was working in Hebron between the years 1988-1993 in Junior School and Pre-school. I left Hebron a few months after my marriage to Mr T Ravikumar (who was travel secretary at Hebron) and started my own Preschool called Peniel Playgroup for children. For seven years the school catered to the needs of the local population. Then my husband fell ill and I closed the school in order to look after him. Sadly he passed away. Our daughter Deborah Kumar (Standard 8) and Daniel Kumar (Standard 5) are both studying at Hebron School, so I decided to come back to Hebron and use my experience in primary education. I am looking forward to many years of service in this community with God's help.

I'm Deepa Tharien and I come from a tiny little town in Tamil Nadu called Oddanchatram. I did my schooling there and then I went on to Chennai and Hyderabad for University. I first heard about Hebron when I was about five years old!!! I had always wanted to come here because over the years I had many friends who studied here. Suzan George (the Georges' daughter) was my friend in college and she always said that Hebron made her who she is. I knew then that this had to be a very special place. After I finished my masters, I wanted to work at Hebron but God had other plans for me. So I worked in the school where I had studied. At the end of the year I applied again and since God thought this was the right time, here I am! I currently work with the Learning Support Department and the English Department. I am also the form tutor of 8 Alpha. I have really enjoyed my time at Hebron. I have eaten all kinds of food, made some wonderful friends, taught some of the most amazing kids, and even had a taste of motherhood once a week (dorm cover)!!

Peter Lazarus I am married to Pearl, who is a teacher and we have a daughter, Michelle who is just 1½ years old. I feel privileged to be born in this place where the beauty of nature is in abundance. I have a passion for trekking, I have participated in the animal census and I have been fortunate enough to see a tiger in the grasslands! I feel it is my duty to tell the word of God in the places where His word hasn't reached. I am in the Ootacamund Gospel Union and visit the outskirts of Ooty to proclaim the love of Jesus. I know of Hebron school from my childhood. I thank God for giving me an opportunity to work here as Travel Secretary. I enjoy the fellowship here.

Emma Willis I'm Emma Willis from the UK. For many years I have known that I would be in India and have had short stays in India over the last few years. About three years ago I saw an advert for a job at Hebron, I was offered the position but then felt it was not the right time to be at Hebron. I did however visit the school for a few weeks during my summer holidays and loved it but did not ever imagine I would back. Then in April 2006 God reminded me about Hebron and in the summer I was asked to come and help out with some teaching. I joined Hebron in October and was made to feel very welcome straight away. Back home in the UK I was teaching RE but here I am also teaching some Geography and am a dorm parent for Snowdon dorm, which I love.

The Support staff day was held on the 17th February 2007. It is a day when all the support staff are given a day off and the school community does the work done by our support staff. The support staff come with their families and we entertain them. This year we had Pastor Jerome bringing the message. The staff entertained the support staff with a Kollattam which was thoroughly enjoyed. Mr Reid welcomed the support staff in Tamil, with

Hebron Highlights 2006 - 2007 The below two trips loom large in our minds as we think of this year. We are grateful to Mr and Mrs George, Mr Ruddock and Mr and Mrs Riley (Term 1) for the numerous other activities and programmes they organised for us over the year.

Cochin: 24th - 26th February 2007 The weekend away at Cochin was meant to be an opportunity to sightsee and relax. However, the ten hour bus ride down to the plains was anything but relaxing. Eventually checking in at midnight, we all had a good night's rest. The next morning, we took boats around the backwaters. This scenic ride also included a stop for refreshing coconut water, Kerala style. Overall, everyone enjoyed the time to lay back, unwind and rest. The evening saw all of Standard 13 going to the Cochin Yacht Club where we were treated to a sumptuous meal by George's parents. It also gave us time to relax and have banter among ourselves. Sunday was a day of sightseeing where we visited an ancient synagogue and a cultural museum, among others. For lunch, we broke into groups and treated ourselves to Cochin's famous seafood. An appetizing meal brought our three day visit to an end as we then ventured back to our hotels, packed our bags and left for Ooty. Overall, a good weekend with plenty to remember.

by Caleb Khew (Standard 13)

Delhi Trip: 11th - 21st December 2006 Taking 77 people on a trip around the North of India was not an easy task. Our trip started in Ooty and we ventured as far as the India / Pakistan border (Wagah Border). The first train ride was by far the longest. Two days non-stop; blistering heat during the day, biting cold at night. No showers or baths, pooris for lunch and dinner (breakfast on one occasion). Finally when we arrived at our destination, Agra, everyone piled out of the train, spewing onto the platform like ants. We spent most nights on trains and many an evening at the train station. On these long trips everyone was preoccupied with finding some form of entertainment. Some boys found enjoyment in throwing clay chai cups at rats. All cups broke and all rats remained unharmed. Many monuments we visited were breathtaking, including the Taj Mahal, Golden Temple, Rashtrapathi Bhavan, Parliament House and India Gate. One of the memorable events was an evening camel ride in Jaisalmer followed by a traditional Rajasthani dance around a camp fire. All in all, the experiences gained in North India were unforgettable and everyone learned valuable lessons. (Never take train or bus journeys that last for more than a day!!)

Granted, the first term of this year wasn't as great as we all hoped it would be. Drama ruled the 13s lives while the 12s struggled to adjust to the increased workloads, and realised that taking chem might not have been the best idea if you're not a round-the-clock workaholic. Marmite, the ghost cat, miraculously managed to make it into almost every room, past locked doors, barred windows and various (homemade) cat traps, successfully completing her aim to redecorate our rooms with semi-digested rat intestines, and waking us up at all god-forsaken hours. Marmite is a “special” cat complete with nine lives and everything - believe us. Marmite holds the special place in our hearts that is also reserved for cottage cheese pancakes, ILPAC, three-minute showers and the other “joys” of Hebron. Throughout the year the 12s and 13s have had many opportunities to bond weekends away and of course, the long awaited Delhi trip. The most vivid memories of the Delhi trip include losing Mr Ruddock

“Don't worry Mom, I'm nearly home and you don't need to tell me about the dog house. I know it is finished. Just wait a minute and I'll be there. Bye! I hung up and jumped on the bus but as we neared the house, I sensed that something felt very wrong. There was no barking from the house. Everything seemed more out of place by the second. There was no whining, no clawing at the door. There was just an uncomfortable silence which seemed to revolve around the house. As I got off the bus a great sense of foreboding struck me as I noticed blood on the front street. My stomach clenched and my mom did not have to tell me the tragedy. The news was like freezing cold water splashed in my face. I felt killing the car driver that ran over Gus. I went outside and my rage melted into sorrow. Gus was already buried next to the shiny completed dog house. The sight was too much for me and I burst into tears. I went up to my room and stared at the photo album of the treasured memories of Gus and me. Joel Boyd (Standard 9)

Hebron Highlights 2006 - 2007 In an international school such as Hebron, awareness and tolerance of other cultures is of paramount importance. As well as accepting students from many different countries, we hope to prepare our pupils well for life beyond school, where they may well be travelling widely and mixing with other people from many different nationalities and backgrounds.

New Hebron Logo

98

Hebron Highlights 2006 - 2007 Stephen George, Alumnus, has been working with the School to devise a new ‘logo’ for the 21st Century.

What’s in a crest?

We were anxious to maintain much of the ‘old’ - the motto ‘Deo Supremo’, the eagle, the shield and the blue/gold colours - whilst also ‘releasing’ the eagle into flight. This is symbolic of the School flying into the new century and of the Hebron family spread worldwide.

Hebron Girls’ School, Coonoor (1899 - 1974)

The eagle was the Lushington Boys’ School emblem, the motto from Hebron High School and the colours common from both schools. We hope you appreciate the new look. Most current students and staff, as well as many Alumni, are most enthusiastic about the design.

Hebron Boys’ School, Ooty (1961 - 1974)

Alastair Reid, Principal

Designer, Stephen George, says of the new design... A novel and exciting approach that emphasises simplicity and minimalism. The clean lines of the soaring eagle offset the basic shape of the shield, working well together to communicate a fine balance between lofty goals on the one hand and clear, solid thinking on the other. Hence the shield does not trap the eagle within its confines. Due to its visual simplicity, together with the distinct form of the soaring eagle in the foreground, this becomes an instantly recognisable logo - high on recall.

Hebron School (1974 - 2007)

Hebron Highlights 2006 - 2007 Inter-School Boys' Football This year we had high hopes for the boys' football teams running on the back of last year’s results. The U14’s showed great promise as they worked their way through to the semifinal, with 21 goals for and only 3 against. They narrowly lost to St Joseph's PS 2-1 in a nailbiting semi-final where they were clearly the stronger team controlling much of the second half. The U19's started off with great intentions with a win of 10-0 over Army School. They continued with success to the finals. Here they faced the might and skill of St Joseph's, a 'David and Goliath'. Going 2-0 down by half time and still in the game, the captain Rohan showed great leadership as he lifted their spirits and led the team out for a gripping second half. They were rewarded with a goal as they started to take the game to St Joseph's and looked like they might gain extra time with a number of opportunities being created. The final score: 2-1 to St Joseph's, an unashamed loss. The U16s stormed through their early rounds with convincing wins providing 31 goals for and six goals against, losing only one of the five matches to the final. Here they met Good Shepherd, beating them 2-1 to take the trophy. Well done to all who played so well and to the

coaches who gave time and encouragement to everyone. Thanks to the school and all those who turned out to support the finals.

Inter-school Cross-country Hebron entered 34 runners in all six age divisions. This year’s event was held on home soil. As expected, Laidlaw Memorial dominated much of the running: Hebron took first place in the Senior Girls’ division through Rachel Dodds with Dorothee Kern taking second and Karolin Kestner coming a fine fourth. Amy Graham took first in the Junior Girls’ division. In the team trophies the boys did much better with a third place for the Super Seniors, Seniors and Juniors and a fourth team place for the Inters. The girls' teams were outstanding. They took first place in both Senior and Junior divisions and second place for both Super Senior and Inters divisions. The event was well run and well organised by all those participating and supervising.

Inter School Athletics A pre-Inter School meet happened at Good Shepherd. This gave the team a little pretournament try out. The event went very well at the MRC stadium. A number of students showed great promise for next year given some more coaching and

improved techniques. Straight finals for some track and field events gave us some good points towards the team results. Our relay teams stood out in all divisions with most of them getting through to the finals. All the long distance events and finals for 200m and 400m had finished by the third day. Special recognition was given to Serena Kern for outstanding achievements in high jump over the past six years. A number of first, second and third places were given to our students who gave their all as individuals and as a team. Saturday turned out to be a great day out for the school. Good sportsmanship prevailed amongst all the schools this year. The boys team in particular did well finishing eighth out of 26 schools. Some early coaching is planned for some individuals in preparation for next year. Quote of the tournament goes to Mr Morris as he asked each competitor crossing the finish line; 'are your lungs burning?' At which point only a nod and a collapse was sufficient to show him that they had indeed done their very best while everyone else laughed. Nothing was better than watching and knowing that everyone had done their best.

Hebron Highlights 2006 - 2007 Inter School Badminton Great interest was shown in badminton. This resulted in some difficult decisions when it came to picking the teams. Some were disappointed but with only two weeks to select and coach individuals in preparation for the Inter School tournament it was very rushed. An earlier injury prevented our most hopeful and promising U14 boy from taking part. The team put a lot of effort and time into preparations. We were not expecting much as far as results were concerned but this was seen as a preparation for next year. The two events went well with a few wins into the next round. There is a lot of natural ability and with good coaching we have possibilities of entering good teams next year. All concerned had a great time as we watched some very good badminton being played in later rounds. A badminton club was started to provide good coaching and opportunities to get match experience.

Inter School Tennis Hebron sent eight boys to compete at Lawrence School against Lawrence and Good Shepherd International School (GSIS) (the only participating teams). Unfortunately it rained in patches all day making conditions slippery and water logging the balls. Lawrence and GSIS

players played soft, consistent shots and the Hebron students found it hard to hit winners with the lack of speed. To their credit the boys went for their shots and played their natural games despite the difficult conditions. Hebron won a couple of games but unfortunately no matches. However, they showed a lot of potential and a real willingness to improve which was not matched by the other schools, which were more focused on immediate results. Thanks to all the girls who came to practices only to have no schools to compete against (we will count that as winning by forfeit!) Good luck to you all in the future and congratulations on the effort you all put in. Thank you, Andrew, for all your hard work in preparing and training the squad.

Inter School Cricket The under 15 cricket squad improved beyond all measure during the 2006 campaign. They were inexperienced - many played their firstever game of cricket this year - but they enjoyed their outings and learned a lot. True, they did not actually win any games of cricket, but they got more competitive as time went on. Aashish Abraham captained the team, and showed excellent judgment in his calling, both with the coin and in running between the wickets. He won all three tosses, and we

started our first match versus Riverside School with a reasonable batting display which realised 100 runs, Ajel top scoring. Apart from him the team seemed to be in a hurry to get in and get out, perhaps being used to shorter matches than the 40 overs a side of Inter School competition. We didn't bowl for long, but after eight overs, which saw a lot of wides, plenty of rain and only one wicket (Aashish would later repeat his trick of getting a wicket in the first over of his spell) it was clear that play would have to be abandoned for the day. After a vomit inducing trip to Coonoor, our next match versus Stanes started badly. Their left handed opener scored a century and taught our boys a few lessons about the perils of wandering from the correct fielding position. Even so, Anish caused a few eyebrows to be raised with his promising leg spin. Andrew impressed with an accurate opening spell and Vineeth and Nirmal turned in their best ever bowling performances. We never looked like chasing the runs, but after an astonishing five largely self-inflicted run-outs we were left with plenty to think about before our final match. Hyng Min and Amith put on 25 for the last wicket, our best stand. Hyng Min entertained the large lunchtime crowd at St Joseph's Stadium with his remarkable swashbuckling technique, and Amith again showed what a Left to right: Joel George and Andrew Graham battle it out on the hockey pitch; Inter School Senior Boys’ Football Squad with coach Howard Newton; Ithai Udaiyar (Captain) received the Inter School football shield.

useful number 11 he is with some sweetly timed slogs. Our last match was against the traditionally strong Lawrence School. With clouds threatening we reduced the match to 30 overs, but that gave us time to pick up eight of their wickets, a really good performance. A fired up Sean made amends for earlier poor form with a good catch and a fine tenacious innings. Neetish and Tahan fielded like demons and all the bowlers got their line right at last. Our batsmen struggled early on against some good fast bowling, but eventually we got to 85 all out, which was not so bad given the calibre of the opposition. The truth is that we were not competitive in the inter school competition. The boys enjoyed the event and certainly learned a lot but far more practice is necessary to match the other schools in this division. Squad: Tahan Menon, Anish Alexander, Hyng Min Cho, Nirmal John, Ajel John, Alexander Davies, Amith Dutta, Kris Gonsalves, Andrew Graham, Meet Sahni, Sean Macgregor, Aashish Abraham, Neetish Bijayananda, Vineeth Rao

Inter School Boys’ Basketball The Inter School Boys’ basketball was held this year at Lawrence School at the beginning of November. The weather over the three days

Cricket Teams Left to right: Under 13s, Under 15s, Under 19s

made things difficult for all those playing on the outdoor pitches. The under 14s played well as a team in all their matches, showed some good skills and moments of flair. They were out classed by a 'giant' of a team in their last match against GSIS who went on to be runners up with Lawrence being winners. Hebron was placed fifth. The U16 boys worked hard with some convincing wins but were unable to pull it off when it counted. They lost to Lawrence by a narrow margin of six points and to Kotagiri by ten. Kotagiri were runners up with Lawrence being winners. Hebron came fourth. The U19 boys' team had high hopes for this year and were not disappointed. All U19 matches were played indoors so were unaffected by rain, however some matches were changed around to suit host team supporters. This did create a particular atmosphere and, along with some dubious refereeing, made for a very frustrating game. We lost this crucial match to Lawrence by one point. The next match against St Joseph's produced the same result, losing by one point. If we had won these two matches a second position would have been guaranteed with a playoff against Good Shepherd. This meant we came fourth with GSIS winning and Lawrence as runners up.

Well done to all taking part, showing good character under some testing conditions.

Inter School Girls’ Basketball The Inter School Girls' basketball tournament was held at Laidlaw Memorial School on Monday 30th and Tuesday 31st October. The under 16 team played two games on the Monday. Their first game was against Riverside Public School. It was a close game throughout with Hebron edging ahead at the end to win 13-10. Their second game was against Nazareth Convent. They played well but were beaten 21-13. The under 19 team only played one game on the Monday. This was against St Hilda's School. It was a very close game with Hebron holding on to win 12-10. The weather on Monday was not conducive to playing basketball with it raining all day. This made the ball very slippery and near impossible to control. Considering the weather and playing conditions, both teams played exceptionally well. On the Tuesday the weather had improved considerably and all games were played in dry conditions. The under 16s first played against GSIS. They didn't quite play to their full potential and were beaten 18-8. Their second game was against Laidlaw Memorial School.

Hebron Highlights 2006 - 2007 They played much better and won comfortably 17-7. Their final game was played in fading light and by the end of the game it was near impossible to see who was shooting baskets or see the scoreboard but Hebron won convincingly, 13-0. The under 19s also played three games on the Tuesday. Their first game was played against Kotagiri Public School which they won 18-13. Their second game was against Lawrence School. They played very well but unfortunately were outplayed and were beaten 22-10. Their third game was against Laidlaw Memorial School. This was a very evenly fought contest. By full-time the scores were tied at 15 all. That meant five minutes extra was needed. After a tense five minutes Hebron emerged victorious 19-17. As a result of the under 19s team only losing one game and winning three they came runners-up in the competition. The under 16s won three games and lost two. Both of the teams can be proud of the way they played and the good sportsmanship displayed throughout the competition. They did themselves and Hebron School proud. Well done girls.

Inter-School Boys’ Hockey The players in the under 16s team were

Joshua Rex, Yash Verma, Ithai Udaiyar, Hyng Sin Cho, Matthias Bushy, Alex Mohandas, Ikranrin Makan, Andrew Graham, Tim Lee, Kynan Chenai, Sean Macgregor, Samuel Khew, Craig Thomson, Nirmal John and Rehan Billimoria. The team was just fantastic. I should say all the players showed extreme commitment and endurance and played exceptionally well. We played three matches. We lost the first match against GSIS with just one goal against us. The second match we played against Cordite Factory School, usually the best team in The Nilgiris. Every year Hebron usually loses to this school. This year was amazing, after having lost the match against GSIS we had to win against Cordite and that too with a number of goals. I was more tensed up than the boys and just before leaving for the match a few staff members said, 'You can't win against Cordite'. I was a bit scared too. The weather was not good and the ground not very suitable for play. Yet within five minutes of the start of the match we had scored three goals. It was unbelievable. The boys were rejoicing and all the other schools present there were shocked, unable to believe what had happened. All eyebrows went up. But as the match went on I could see our boys on the field getting tired, but I kept

shouting, 'run, get back, keep going' and saw the boys really fighting back and doing all that they could to win and we did! We shot seven goals with just one against us - a glorious and exquisite moment. Now we were topped up with points but unfortunately the hosting school suddenly changed the system from a league, semi-finals, and finals to a round-robin system. The third and final match we played against Laidlaw Memorial, being the host school, the entire school was in the ground cheering for them. It was just me all alone cheering for our school. But once again our boys displayed their best with a zeal to win no matter what, and we won with one goal against them. It was another splendid and glorious moment. But because of the sudden change to a round- robin system, we lost to GSIS with a difference of just one point and became the ‘runners-up’. One thing which was unique about Hebron was, we always started the match with a prayer, and we saw God's grace upon each of the players. In a nutshell, all in the team were lovely, they displayed team work, extreme effort, they encouraged one another, fought back and just kept going even when the going was tough. Hats off to you guys!

In School Badminton Earlier in the term Hebron sent six teams to compete in inter-school badminton. Due to a lack of practice and match experience the teams underperformed. However, we saw a lot of potential there so we started up fortnightly training sessions for the players in the team. We also created a group for those not in the teams but keen to come and get some coaching and practice. At the end of term we ran a staff versus student competition to give the students some match experience. It was good to see improvement across the board. However the staff were well experienced and too cunning, pulling off some close wins. It has been very encouraging to see the regular turnouts for the club with many students improving greatly. A good sign for next year’s inter-school tournament.

In School Table Tennis During the second half of Term 1, we ran a table tennis tournament for the girls at Selborne and for staff. A good number of people participated, from beginners to experts, and people were able to enjoy themselves with some good competition.

Inter-School Girls' Field Hockey Hebron hosted this tournament and provided

the ground staff. There was a fine spirit of fair play and competition amongst all who entered. In the hockey our U14 team faced a direct final against Good Shepherd International School. These girls showed us that even at this level they have grasped some of the finer skills of the game with some good passing, individual flare and team work. They played their hearts out with outstanding performances from Ceilidh Rex as captain and Song Kim from midfield who scored both their goals; a strong, solid game was played by Rina Suresh, a fine sweeper who missed little, but credit also goes to Suzanna Morris in her first competition giving Hebron U14s a clean sheet in goal. A number of good opportunities were created providing us with a very convincing two goal win. A very entertaining final enjoyed by all who watched and competed. With this pool of young energetic and enthusiastic players the future of Hebron hockey remains bright. No challenges for our U16 team meant we had a friendly against Kodaikanal U19. Training paid off with good calm play at the back and some very good opportunities created for the forwards. Kodai's keeper was put under a lot of pressure and kept Kodai in contention. A solid all round performance led to a 2-1 victory for Hebron. Tireless play by Salome Udaiyar as captain and Karolin Kestner oozed confidence

to the other players who all played well. Goals coming from Keren Kabo up front and Salome in midfield set the tone of the match with fine performances from Amy-Ruth Morris in midfield, Meher Patel as sweeper and Gitanjali Pillai as keeper, with the defense holding well under pressure. This team should be very proud of its achievement against an older competition. It would have been nice to see what could have been against other U16 teams. Maybe next year. The U19s also had a direct final against Kodaikanal. The U14 and U16 teams had thrown the gauntlet down before lunch for their older peers. Could the U19s continue the winning streak? Gail Schroeder led out a team which included a number of U16s. Good passing and strong team play provided the results with goals from Elzba Matthews and Salome Udaiyar. Salome, Keren, Karolin and Amy-Ruth from the U16 team provided good composure and rose to the challenge for their senior counterparts. Real credit needs to go to Gail who held things together at the back and kept a clean sheet in goal and to the 'work horses', Kathrin Kestner and Elzba Matthews. A strong team with a good convincing win bagged a triple win for Hebron School in this year's Inter-school Girls' Hockey Tournament.

Hebron Highlights 2006 - 2007 Indoor Hockey against Kodai (U19): This annual tournament was played against Kodai. Both schools entered A and B teams. This created a real competitive spirit as everyone had something to prove after the field hockey. All games were played in front of good natured partisan crowds. Hebron B team held their own very well nearly upsetting the apple cart against Hebron A and Kodai A, only just losing to each of these by one goal. Final results were Kodai A taking first place with Hebron A second followed by Hebron B and then Kodai B.

Inter-School Girls' Football A lot of training went into the Hebron football squads with some high expectations from all concerned. Everyone worked hard in their preparation. The day came with the U14's very disappointed as no entrants were there to play them. The U16s ended up having a direct final with Good Shepherd. This proved to be quite a fast paced and physically demanding game in the hot weather with the game getting off to a late start. It was a closely fought match with Hebron missing a number of good opportunities which should have put them comfortably in front. As a result they made it hard for themselves; but the back three worked well

together with controlled passing under some intense pressure helping them to hold on to a 1-0 win the scorer being Salome Udaiyar. Everyone played well but special recognition goes to Salome (captain) who worked tirelessly in midfield and to Dorothy Kern in defense who was everywhere supporting and taking control, without whom the outcome could certainly have been reversed. The U19s had a three way tournament with Kodaikanal and the Government Arts College. The strength of the U16s showed with a number of them represented in the U19 squad. The first match was against Kodai with Hebron showing superiority in most areas of the game. Again the finishing was short of the mark with many opportunities squandered but the final result was in Hebron's favour, 2-0. Some very nice unselfish play at the front by Elzaba Matthews gave Nibha Pardiwala the chance to score. The second goal came from a lovely play starting in midfield and being passed up through giving Fiona Jacob the opportunity to score from just inside the box. Again the defence was magnificent thanks again to Dorothy Kern who made sure that Caroline Inglis in goal had little to do to keep a clean sheet. The second match was Kodai against GAC. GAC were no match for Kodai. This game turned a little physical in the later stages with a

1-0 score line to Kodai not reflecting the true direction of the game. Again as with the first match, the finishing touch let the winning team down. The third match was to be Hebron against GAC. This was unfortunately conceded by GAC and so as a result Hebron was the winner.

Inter-School Indoor Hockey Turn out for this competition was a little disappointing as only Good Shepherd International School entered the tournament. However this proved to be a very enjoyable competition by all concerned. Hebron and GSIS provided three sides each; an A team, a B team and a veteran team all playing in the same group. With 3 points for a win, a point for each goal up to 3 maximum and a single point for a draw provide for some interesting games. The final game was set to be a memorable one; Hebron A facing GSIS A with only one point separating these two teams. The outcome was unpredictable right up to the final whistle with Hebron scoring in the last minute to clinch the match 4-3. Maximum points of 6 per game went to Hebron A who took the final trophy. Real credit must go to Gail Schroeder in goal without whom Hebron A would not have won the trophy. Thanks to all coaches involved in all divisions.

Hebron Sports Day Left to right: Many medals were awarded and many records broken; Tom Wood leads the Junior School 100m race; Grace Lee.

This rounded off two great weekends of Girls' Inter-School hockey and football with Hebron taking all the trophies available in the three Interschool competitions.

Hebron Sports Day Sports Day went smoothly with thanks to the enthusiastic help given by all involved. Everyone enjoyed the day, with some great competitions going on particularly in the field events. It was in this area that we saw a good number of new records being set. High jump and long jump clubs which had started back in early October paid dividends as records in most age groups were broken, some by significant amounts. With additional focus put on discus and shot-put techniques during pre-training we saw many set new records, again by significant amounts. The potential again for raising the Hebron School standard for Inter-School Sports 2007/2008 is exciting. The Junior School Sports Day was held over two days, Friday 16th and Saturday 17th March. The children competed in two track events and two field events. The heats and some semifinals for the 100m, 200m and 400m were held on the Friday along with a number of field events. The weather was fine for both sports days and everyone enjoyed themselves, including the parents who came to watch the Hebron Sports Day Left to right: Arjun Narayan with coach Steve Morris after his record 1.85m high jump; Relay winners Dorothee Kern / Emily Dodds / Salome Udaiyar / Karolin Kestner; ‘My best for the glory of God’.

Swimming Gala The Junior School Swimming Gala was integrated with the whole-school Swimming Gala, held during parents' week. All the children participated either in a length event or a width event. The strokes that were covered were freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke. Some children used a kickboard while a few were assisted across the pool. There was a larger number of children competing in length races this year which was due to the hard work and dedication that staff and IG's put in to the swimming lessons.

7-up and Junior Church

Hebron Highlights 2006 - 2007 Junior Church Do you remember Mr Niblett selling his tent? Or maybe Mrs Humphreys and Mrs Inglis trekking in Nepal? Or perhaps Mr Briggs and his dorm doing battle against giants? Surely the most memorable service of the year was the Christmas party during which Mrs Fairfield got thoroughly gunged with green porridge! Junior Church is a weekly event during which families and students up to Standard 8 worship together and learn together from the bible. We have studied the Beatitudes in Matthew's gospel urging us to be the salt of the earth and have considered the lives of David, Elijah and Paul as we seek to walk the walk and talk the talk of the good news of Jesus. As ever, we are immensely grateful to older students participating in Junior Church, sharing their faith with the younger students.

7-up: A voluntary Christian activity for Standards 7 & 8 students. 7-up is held on alternate Sunday evenings at Selborne.

Fun: Each evening begins with games in the Selborne Sports Hall. Sometimes teams are mixed and other times ‘boys against girls’. The games involve lots of running around and even some strategy.

Fellowship: The main part of the evening is spent looking at basic Christian beliefs and how they impact on our lives. This includes talks, video excerpts, activities, testimonies, games, etc.

Food: Each evening concludes with food from the Selborne kitchen, with a special treat at the end of each half term!

It probably won't turn your life upside down; but it might!

NBC: Nine's Bible Club Upon entering Standard 9, the students who do not wish to attend Junior Church or sit through the entirety of Second Service, can attend NBC. We either run the session on the grass behind Union Church or use the adjacent meeting room. Around half of Standard 9 attend. The meetings last up to one hour and the same piece of Scripture which is covered in Second Service is taught at NBC. We usually break the session into three or four parts and include drama or other activities. We aim to teach the Bible faithfully through shortened talks and/or small discussion groups. We hope and endeavour to bring glory to God by encouraging and building up young Christians in the faith so they may serve God now and in the future. Amen.

Standard 7 spent a week at Avalanche (Scripture Union camp site) in November. They explored the local environment, studying various habitats - streams, pine forests, shoala stands and wattle plantations. They were encouraged to reflect on the environment and express this through writing and discussions. Students were given the opportunity to develop their teamwork and organisational skills through general outdoor living and adventurous activities such as gorge walking, kayaking, fire lighting and backwoods cooking.

Independence Day Celebration

126

Hebron Highlights 2006 - 2007 On August 15th 2006 India celebrated her 59th year of independence. In Hebron School, we had our neighbouring school St Hilda's present us with a dance enacting the freedom struggle. Significant aspects of India's history during the years of British rule were dramatised and presented with verve and enthusiasm. We unfurled the National Flag after the National Anthem was sung and this was followed by prayers for the Nation. Dorms went out for the day and had picnics, outings and walks celebrating the freedom and liberty we have and which we often take for granted.

believed in him. Preppio danced and sang his way into our lives because everybody needs someone to love. Preppio is the story of a puppet on a journey to find love. On the way he meets lots of different people who try to convince him that his quest is in vain. Some suggest food, others money and others that knowledge are the answers to it all. All the while he is pestered by two vagabonds who are only out for their own evil gain. In the end of course Preppio does find love, right where he began in the toyshop with Gepetto. Any performance only has a chance because people give up their time and work hard. Lots of the staff and IGs gave of their time to take part in a unique experience. Special mention must go to Nick Barclay, Louise Abbott and Rachel Alexander who pretended all along to have fun rehearsing. The question must be asked as to why we do it; well there are many reasons, but here are three: First and most importantly it is done for

On Friday, 2nd February 2007, we held a whole School Assembly on the newly purchased terraced land behind the Sports Hall. This land, a little short of an acre in size used to belong to Hebron and it was sold for a small sum in the 1970's. We had to buy it back for a somewhat larger sum of money in 2006-7 but it was fitting that Mr Ian McCabe, a Hebronite, was able to unveil the commemorative plaque as it was his father-in-law who had been the Council secretary at the time of sale! The dedication involved songs from Silverdale Dorm, a prayer by the Principal and the unveiling of the plaque. This is inscribed as follows: This plaque commemorates the re-purchase of the 'Carrot Field' (also known as 'Susie's Field') in 2006-7. The acquisition of this land in the Glenrock Valley was officially marked in a School Assembly in February 2007. The Hebron School family wishes to acknowledge the generosity of Parents, Council, Staff, Hebronites and Friends of the School worldwide who have made this purchase possible. To God be the glory. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:12) DEO SUPREMO

The Princess was accompanied by the Thai Ambassador to India, HE Chirasak Thanesnant and by the Indian Ambassador to Thailand, HE Latha Reddy. Additionally, there were a further sixteen people in the Royal party. With security, police, a medical team, local government officials and the Press it was a sizeable motorcade that swept up the main drive to Lushington Hall. She was greeted by one of our Thai students, Arissa MacGregor, in traditional Thai dress. She then met the other eleven students who live in Thailand or who are Thai Nationals. After refreshments in the staff room and an introduction to Hebron from Mr Reid, (Principal), the whole party visited the Senior and Junior Schools. The Princess was

Easter Pageant

132

Hebron Highlights 2006 - 2007 What is a pageant? A pageant is defined as a brilliant spectacle arranged for effect often performed to illustrate a period of history.

The Easter Pageant This year’s Easter Pageant was made possible through the compilation of numerous ideas outworked within four different clubs and out of school music. The majority of the pageant was practiced within the six weeks dedicated to clubs and then as the pageant approached the groups were organized together to form a cohesive performance. The music department worked particularly hard outside of clubs’ time throughout the year. The pageant was only one of the events they got involved with. However, it was the hard work and dedication of many people who were involved in the pageant which should be noticed as they united for one common purpose: To bring Glory to the Lord.

n 2004 Hebron School sent a team of students, alumni and staff to work with “ACTS” (Action Community Transformation Service) in Orissa.

The team raised over INR 3,00,000 and helped build a community centre. The roof of the centre, however, needs regular repair work. We aim to raise INR 4,00,000 to build a new permanent roof. A good roof will enable year-round access for the one hundred or so children who use the centre for creative learning, worship, personal development and parent–child interaction. The Church will hold its meetings in the building and ACTS will have a field office there too. A Triathlon was held in April 2007 to raise funds towards the project. Forty four pupils and four staff took part in the triathlon, but many others were involved in collecting sponsorship. So far we have raised INR 2,40,000.

Hebron ~ Dean Close Link

142

Hebron Highlights 2006 - 2007

A

-level History essays sometimes begin with the instruction, 'Compare and contrast ‌' (the reign of Elizabeth I with James I, for example, or the experience of industrialisation in France and Germany in the Nineteenth century). When the same instruction is considered concerning Hebron School in south India and Dean Close in Cheltenham, England, several differences emerge alongside many similarities: 1. Location: Both are in towns where there are several other independent schools: Hebron is one of 24 English-medium schools in the Nilgiri Hills but is one of only two fully international schools. Both are surrounded by hills but the Cotswolds are dwarfed by the Nilgiris (part of India's Western Ghats) which rise to 7,500 ft (twice as high as Ben Nevis) where Hebron is located. Both have beautiful grounds but Hebron lies within the Government Botanical

Gardens in the town of Ootacamund (Ooty), a former British 'hill station'. Cheltenham has many links with the British in India (Dean Close House was built by a retired Indian Army officer and Christchurch has numerous memorials to those who died in the sub-continent); Hebron's buildings are clustered round Lushington Hall, built in 1826 as a residence for the brother of the Governor of the Madras Presidency (Southern India). The President of Dean Close's first Board of Governors was Lord Shaftesbury, a leader of the Anti-Slavery Society; Lushington was also a member of the ASS and both men can be seen in a painting in London's National Portrait Gallery, an interesting point of similarity in this year commemorating the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the British empire. 2. Amenities: Dean Close's water supply is virtually uninterrupted and clean for drinking; Hebron depends on a spring from the Mountain and several wells but this water needs purifying before it can be drunk. The National electricity Grid in the UK rarely fails; Hebron depends on intermittent power supplies and frequently has to rely on its own generator. Relatively few of Dean Close's staff are housed 'on campus' whilst at Hebron the vast majority live in school flats and share communal showers and have to fetch hot water and drinking water from central sources. Dean Close has acres of level, grassed, playing fields and two astroturf pitches;

Hebron has two 'baked mud' pitches surrounded by trees and a few, small, grassy areas. Dean Close has recently opened a Sports' Hall, Hebron has had one for over 15 years! Dean Close has over 15 tennis courts in use in the summer; Hebron has only one purpose-built court! 3. Pupils: Dean Close has 'scholars', Hebron has 'students'. At Dean Close the combined number of pupils over three schools is around 800, whilst at Hebron there are 360 students across one school. Both schools became co-ed over 30 years ago: Dean Close was a boys' school which took girls; Hebron was a girls' school which amalgamated with a boys' one. Dean Close arranges its Houses by age 'vertically'; Hebron has Dorms of 20 singlesex students of the same age ('horizontally'). Dean Close has its Houses in relatively close proximity on the same site; Hebron's girls' Dorms are a kilometre (a bus ride) away from Lushington at Selborne (not Shelburne!). Boarders at Dean Close number 60% of the whole whilst at Hebron they are 90% Pupils at Dean Close come from all over the world whilst at Hebron, although their homes may be worldwide, their parents must be working in Asia or Africa and most are doing Christian work of some kind. 4. Staff: At Dean Close they are from three or

four nationalities; at Hebron they are from nine different countries. Salaries at Dean Close equate to experience, training and responsibility; at Hebron all the resident staff, from Principal to primary teacher, are paid the same (a local salary) and so some 'outside' support is vital. 5. Curriculum: Both schools follow the English National Curriculum leading to GCSE and A-level but Hebron offers the International variety of these (requiring less coursework). Dean Close offers Spanish whilst Hebron offers Hindi. 6. Extra-curricular: Both schools offer a wide range of sports: at Dean Close the major sports include rugby, hockey, netball, cricket and athletics; at Hebron these are soccer, hockey, cricket, athletics and basketball. Dean Close has a heated indoor swimming pool. Hebron's is outdoor and heated by the sun! Drama and Music are strong at both schools, with Hebron running a Drama Festival every October and sitting the ABRSM examinations with an adjudicator from Britain. Both schools offer the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme; Dean Close scholars might face the rigours of snow and ice, whilst at Hebron unknown dangers lurk from elephants and tigers!

terms only, August - December and February - June. Both schools have mid-term breaks but at Hebron the majority of staff, students and parents spend the October one at Kovalam Beach! Dean Close has Pre-Prep., Prep. and Senior sections; Hebron has Junior, Middle and Senior. Both schools have Prefects but Hebron also has a Student Council which is elected by the pupils and runs charity events, the common room for indoor games and a canteen. When Dean Close scholars reach the end of the Upper Sixth they 'leave' whilst Hebron students reach Standard 13 and 'graduate' after a very formal ceremony. Dean Close has a Headmaster, Hebron has a Principal.

Scholars at Dean Close enjoy a wide variety of food choices, especially at lunch, and use knives and forks; the Hebron student chooses between 'veg.' and 'nonveg.' but many will eat off tin plates with their fingers! Much more could be written about these linked schools but, when all is said and done, they have the essentials in common: Christian foundations, British-style education, a commitment to service and a desire to help the less fortunate in the world. Hebron offers 'gap year' places for six months in its International Guest (IG) scheme: many Decanians have already served as IGs and Hebron looks forward to welcoming many more of these as well as staff and guests as visitors. Alastair Reid, Principal

Hebron Schools’ Association Council This year the school bade farewell to one of its members with long associations with Hebron: Mrs Willi Barton has served since 2003 but prior to this she and Dr Barton were Hebron parents and both helped with the 2002 school evaluation. The council is made up of Indians and expats living in India. A few are former students and most are current Hebron parents. The 2006-7 council members are: Dr Mary Ramaswamy (Chairman), Mr Manohar Devadatta (Treasurer), Mrs Willi Barton (Secretary), Mrs Karol Svoboda, Mr John

7. School structure: Dean Close has the traditional threeterm academic year while Hebron has two
