Holiday 2012

Luri

She has the ability to see the whole picture and work her way backward to understand the parts. Budget and business lady extraordinaire. She believes in giving back and is driven by success. Loves being organized and is emotionally involved with work projects. Pays attention to the details and may miss the forest for staring at the trees. Left brained.

Wilma

She is a random and abstract thinker. Often late and prefers fantasy to reality. Entertains the idea of simply being a socialite and loves art. Prefers that all situations are to her liking. Could live her life on the front row of fashion. Right brained.

Editor’s Letter: Oh, the holidays! I love a good winter - cold nights, warm friends and presents to give & get (and you get to eat & drink your face off). But we’ve had a couple of changes over here at the luri & wilma camp and it’s times like these you value great friends and an amazing team. We truly could not do it without the writers, interns, contributors and our pretty swell photography man! So I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart, you make each issue possible! This holiday issue marks a new chapter for the luri & wilma team. We’ve had some growing pains but are pretty excited to start the new year off, have ya seen the new site? I hope you enjoy the holiday issue, score some great gifts for the people you love, try one of our cookie recipes (they’re scrumptious) and get dolled up with some great ideas for NYE. We’ve also got some great women featured in this issue. Nicole Baldwin is the founder of Biao Skincare, a super green, super great beauty company. And Carolyn Stromberge, well she runs the Union Market gem, Righteous Cheese. Until next year ladies & gents, have a very lovely holiday!

For your eco-chic little one!

By Necole Peralta

Eco-chic mommies and adorable eco girls, your hunt for gorgeous and unique hair accessories is over! No longer do you have to scour the large retailers’ aisles in hopes of finding something different from the traditional pink, purple or standard yellow bows. Those days are over thanks to Pink & Pigtails – an adorable company for little girls and woman alike (at least those who appreciate a little flair in the hair!). Created by Chandra Robinson in 2006, Pink & Pigtails came about after Chandra’s little one Layla was born. After scouring the stores for unique hair accessories with no luck, Chandra began creating Layla’s pieces herself.

After about the tenth frantic request from friends and strangers looking for adorable pieces for their girls, Pink & Pigtails was born. Chandra recently expanded the P&P brand from hair bows to other adorably chic items including headbands, custom party hats and now ridiculously fabulous handcrafted jewelry pieces. And while P&P is currently sold on Etsy, Chandra hopes to expand one day to a real life brick and mortar shop filled to the brim in unique femininity! All of P&P’s gorgeous pieces are made by hand by the designer herself, though she admits her husband and two sons play a huge role in ironing, folding and packing each piece. Gotta give love to a small, family biz!

Nicole Baldwin Bioa Skincare

World Girl

By Michelle Goldchain

Beauty Through Empowerment Beautiful Inside and Out. Biao stands for more than just beauty for your skin with all-natural, organic products. Biao Skincare inspires the protection and beauty not only for oneself, but for the community and the environment as well. Founded in 2010 by U.S. Army Veteran Nicole Baldwin, Biao Skincare implements grass roots marketing and holistic strategic planning, while utilizing herbs, plants, fruits and botanicals from all around the world in the making of its products. Furthering interest in the environment, not only are the skin care products from Biao eco-friendly, but so is the packaging. All packaging is made with “100 percent post-consumer recycled materials that are sourced, produced and shipped using renewable energy,” as stated on the Biao Skincare website. Baldwin’s interest in skin care products arose after experiencing severe burns on her face, neck and chest at five years old. Through natural, organic remedies formulated by her grandmother in the kitchen to treat her burns, the dramatic improvements thereafter inspired Baldwin to learn more. “I guess a tragedy turned into a passion,” said Baldwin. Before her time in the United States Army, Baldwin trained to be an aesthetician in Houston Training School. During her time of deployment in Afghanistan while in the United States Army, Baldwin said, “I believe my inspiration and determination to create Biao Skincare really evolved.”

Undergoing the harsh climate in Afghanistan and its effect on her skin and health, Baldwin experienced the dramatic, positive effects from transitioning to all-natural skin care remedies and a healthy, organic diet. She added, “The name, Biao, is a tilt off to my military service in honor of all the acronyms we use in the Army.” Considering herself a “beauty advocate,” Baldwin stated, “Beauty is giving back.” This motto is held by the company through its donations to Free the Children, an international network dedicated to educating and developing programs for over 1,000,000 children in 45 countries, and also The Biao Love Mission, which seeks to “bring better schools, better living conditions and better opportunities for children around the world as Biao employees sponsor villages in Africa, Asia and teen shelters in the U.S.,” reported in a press release.

Baldwin said, “I think it’s important to contribute to the community because without the community, there would be no Biao.” She further stated, “I think that’s what life is all about. It’s all about humanity. It’s all about giving back. It’s all about helping each other and growing together, and I think it’s important. I think it’s essential to a beautiful world.” For the future of Biao Skincare, Baldwin said that she sees her products going international, into the United Kingdom, the Middle East, China, Africa and the Philippines. “We are just beginning and emerging into something excellent. I see Biao Skincare in the bathrooms and on the counters in front of beautiful women all over the world.” New and exciting additions will include body scrubs, shampoos, conditioners, lotions and more. What will make these products so different will be that they will be custom-made and made-to-order, but of course all-organic. “It will be more tailor-made toward what your body actually needs,” said Baldwin. Baldwin also hopes to introduce a cosmetic line under the Biao Skincare umbrella as well as what will be called the Branding Boutique to be launched mid-2013, which will be a small business consultant firm to assist small businesses “that are looking for that big business branding,” said Baldwin. With a passion for her product and her business, Baldwin hopes to build Biao Skincare to be uplifting and inspiring. “It is a dream that became a reality.” For now, being beautiful inside and out has never been easier, for oneself or the world. Enter the code: LURIANDWILMA for 20 percent off your next purchase at Biao Skincare.

Tis the season to shop local!

Your guide to holiday markets in the District By Julie Smolinski

It’s not that we don’t love a good boutique or cozy thrift store, but there’s something truly thrilling about shopping at markets. There’s just so much to see, taste and touch, and there’s none of that shopping mall nonsense (including endless lines, checkout noises and bad music). The vendors are some of the most knowledgeable salespeople you’ll ever meet. Plus, many of the products are local! So if you’re looking for alternatives to the usual present-hunting places this holiday season and want to make the most of this city’s markets, look no further. We’ve scoured and highlighted some of DC’s best bazaars for you. We’ve got extended content of each market on the blog too!

Fenton Street Market

Located in Silver Spring, MD, Fenton Street Market is not technically a DC market, but with more than 60 fabulous vendors every market how could we not feature it? And while the market normally runs from April to October, they’ve added extra days in November and December for extra-last-minute holiday shopping. Fenton St. & Ellsworth Dr Silver Spring MD Saturday, December 22nd 10-4 Learn more about the market & enter our giveaway - you could score a $10 gift certificate at http://bit.ly/U3Kqif.

Flea Market at Eastern Market

The most well-known of all DC’s markets, Eastern Market is pretty darn extensive. With both the Flea Market at Eastern Market and the food market itself, there is lots to see and sample. On any given Sunday you’ll find everything from vintage jewelry to used books to handmade jams and jellies. Read more & see pics of the market at http://bit.ly/StDmx6 The Flea Market at Eastern Market Located at 7th & C Sts., SE (Eastern Market Metro Station) Every Sunday 10-5

Union Market At first glance, Union Market may seem like a place just for foodies. But with a thorough investigation and some imagination you can cross off plenty of people on your gift list. Just this year, Union Market has become DC’s culinary go-to center, a place for artisans to host pop-up shops and sell tasty goodies. Who doesn’t love cheese? And a lady that talks cheese, wine and their friendship, well she’s one gal we’d love to know! Carolyn Stromberg is the lady behind the Union Market shop Righteous Cheese. If you love food and local goods, the new Union Market is quite the place to be, especially on the weekends. Busy from open to close, Righteous Cheese is a cheese shop and bar in one. You’ll find seasonal yummy cheeses you might not find in other places. And well, there’s wine of course! Dinning at the Market? On any open day, you can choose from several different flights. A flight is a pairing of cheese with certain beers or wines. A fan of Two Buck Chuck and afraid to venture into the often intimidating wine talk? Carolyn or one of her friendly staffers will walk you through the flight and in no time you’ll be talking wine and cheese like an expert. And Carolyn is no amateur cheesemonger. When she first moved to the District in 1997, there weren’t many restaurants in the area but as college kids do, she found a gig working in a restaurant to pay the bills. “But, I found out I really liked the restaurant business, I loved it,” said Carolyn.

monger

dealing in cheese, butter, etc. After college, Carolyn traveled to Europe and that’s where her love of all things cheesy began. Post-travels she returned to the District and worked the front of house at Palena. She was in charge of the cheese plates. “We got shipments in from New York regularly and I couldn’t wait to see the descriptions of what was in each cheese,” she said. After work at the Cowgirl Creamery, teaching cheese and all its goodness to restaurateurs, she was approached about Union Market. She began a Kickstarter campaign and was able to raise the remaining cash she needed to open up Righteous Cheese. You can eat, shop and learn all about cheese and its friendly accomplices Saturday & Sunday, with more hours being added during the week for the holidays. Be sure to check the Righteous Cheese website for current open hours.

Pear Tarts By Chris McLaurin Ingredients:

Putting It All Together:

Pie Dough - see Let’s Talk Technique

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix water and sugar. Bring to a boil and add spices. Peel and core pears. Add to boiling simple syrup and reduce heat to a simmer. Simmer until pears are tender. Remove from liquid and cool pears. Discard syrup or use as a flavoring for sparkling water. Once pears are cool slice into 1/3 inch strips.

Frangipane 4 oz. Butter (room temperature) 4 oz. Sugar 4 oz. Almond Flour 3 Eggs 1 tsp. Vanilla 1/2 tsp. Lemon Zest 1 Tbsp. AP Flour 2 Pears 3 cups Water 3 cups Sugar 2 sticks Cinnamon 3 Cloves 1 Star Anise

For the Frangipane whip butter and sugar until light and fluffy using the paddle attachment of a mixer. Mix in ½ of almond flour. Once incorporated add one egg. Incorporate remaining almond flour. Add last two eggs. Mix in zest and flour. To assemble: Roll dough out to 1/8 inches. This dessert can be finished as either one tart or tartlets. For tartlets, cut dough to fit into oiled cupcake molds. Spoon in frangipane to fill 1/3 of tartlet. Add three strips of pear to each tartlet and bake for 20-30 minutes. Frangipane will be set and pie dough will have browned when done.

Classic Coconut Macaroons By Chris McLaurin Ingredients:

Putting It All Together:

14 oz. Sweetened Condensed Milk 14 oz. Shaved Coconut (unsweetened if you can find it) 4 Egg Whites Pinch of Salt

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix condensed milk, shaved coconut, and salt. Beat egg white by hand or with mixer until you have medium peaks. Fold whipped egg whites into base. Portion onto greased and parchment lined sheet tray. Bake until edges of macaroons are brown (around 10-15 minutes). Allow to cool and remove from parchment with offset spatula.

Coconut Macaroons with Chocolate Ganache By Emily Hillard Ingredients:

Putting it all together:

For the macaroons:

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. In a medium bowl or bowl of a standing mixer, whisk egg whites and salt until they become frothy, about 2 minutes. Stir in the condensed milk and vanilla, then fold in the coconut until everything is well mixed.

2 large egg whites Âź tsp. salt 1 can (14 oz.) sweetened condensed milk 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 2 bags (14 oz. each) finely shredded unsweetened coconut For the chocolate ganache: 3.5 oz. 60-70% dark chocolate (unsweetened), broken into pieces 1/2 cup sugar scant 1/2 cup heavy cream 1 tsp. sea salt

Line 1-2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Using a large 3 Tblsp. cookie or ice cream scoop, make balls of the dough, packing it into the scoop, then placing on the cookie sheet, about 1-inch apart. Bake for about 20 minutes or until macaroons are golden brown. To get them browned on top, you may want to turn on the broiler for just 1-2 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly (you’ll want to eat them warm!) Meanwhile, make the chocolate ganache. Put chocolate, sugar, heavy cream, and salt into the top of a double boiler. Put water in the bottom of the boiler and place on medium heat until filling is melted, glossy, and thick. Drizzle the ganache over the macaroons and let sit until chocolate becomes set.

Janny’s Wonderbars

By Chris McLaurin Ingredients:

Putting It All Together:

Crust 3 cups Graham Cracker Crumbs 4 Tbsp. Butter 2 Tbsp. Sugar

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Filling 1 14 oz. can Sweetened Condensed Milk 1 cup Toasted Peanuts 1 cup Peanut Butter Morsels 1 cup Chocolate Chips 1 cup Shredded Coconut 1 cup Dried Sour Cherries *you can basically use whatever your favorite goodies are as fillings!

Melt butter. Mix butter, cracker crumbs, and sugar until evenly moistened. Press into bottom of 9”x9” pan. Bake for 10 minutes. Cool. Cover crust with all desired fillings excluding condensed milk. Pour condensed milk over fillings. Bake for around 20 minutes until condensed milk has begun to bubble and brown. Allow to fully cool before slicing.

Homemade Sea Salt Caramels

By Emily Hillard Ingredients:

1 cup sugar 1/4 cup water 1/4 cup light corn syrup 1 cup heavy cream 4 Tblsp. (1/2 stick) unsalted butter 1 tsp. sea salt, plus additional for sprinkling ½ tsp. vanilla extract Putting It All Together:

Then without stirring, bring the mixture to a boil until it is golden brown in color. Make sure to keep an eye on it as this transition can happen quickly. When the mixture is done, remove from heat and carefully add the cream mixture (it will bubble up so pour it slowly). Stir in the vanilla. Return the saucepan to the stove and cook over medium heat until it reaches a temperature of 248 degrees (you’ll need a candy thermometer for this), approximately 10 minutes. Once it reaches 248, remove from heat and let cool just slightly, 1-2 minutes.

Line an 8X8-inch baking pan with parchment paper and using vegetable or canola oil, lightly grease the paper and sides of the pan. Set aside.

Pour the caramel into the prepared pan and let cool to room temperature. Once cool, place in the fridge for 1-2 hours until firm.

In a small pot, bring cream, butter, and 1 tsp. sea salt to a simmer over low heat, making sure to not let it boil. Once it begins to simmer, remove from heat and set aside.

Remove pan from the fridge and let cool to room temperature. Holding the parchment paper, remove the caramel from the pan and place on a cutting board. With a chef’s knife, cut the caramel into approximately 1-inch pieces and sprinkle each piece with additional sea salt.

In a medium saucepan, mix water, corn syrup and sugar. Place over medium heat and stir until sugar has dissolved.

Wrap each piece in parchment paper and twist the ends, as you would a candy wrapper.

Happy freakin’ New Year’s!

Ready in 5! Get holiday ready in 5 minutes flat By Anika Rich

Are your party guests arriving as you step out of the shower? Or maybe an hour ago you should have been on your way to a fabulous holiday gathering and your face is still as naked as the day you were born. Either way, you want to look amazing in a matter of seconds. Whatever will you do?

1 minute: start with your foundation. You may be taking lots of pictures, so go for something with a smooth finish and maximum coverage. 3 minutes: this look is all about eyes. Start with a shadow that is some variation of the top or dress you’re wearing. Apply it to your lids only. Take a darker color shadow (brown or dark silver) and brush it into the crease between your eyelid and eyebrow. Blend together until the lid color seems to gradual flow into the darker crease color. If this is a nighttime shindig, add a bit of black shadow to the outside corners of your lids for added drama. Line top and bottom lash lines with black or dark brown liner, and quickly brush a few strokes of mascara through your lashes for definition. 15 seconds: add a swipe of blush, just for fun. A deep cherry red or dark fuchsia applied lightly from apples of cheeks to temples add a bit of warmth to a chilly night. 30 seconds: between eating, kissing, talking and smiling, your lips will be very active! This means that you’ll probably need to reapply throughout the day or night, so you’ll need something low-maintenance. A couple swipes of clear gloss and you’re good. 15 seconds: check you out, hot mama! Make sure you’re looking party perfect because you probably won’t be able to sneak away to a mirror anytime soon. Happy Holidays!
