Plaza Tlaxcoaque: Recovering the Center ≤ The aim of the Historic Center Authority is to recover and make better use of public spaces, improving mobility and linking up buildings and zones with historic and heritage value, establishing visiting routes and cultural activities. One of the outstanding projects is the construction of the new Plaza de Tlaxcoaque by 2010.

≤ This new public space will feature a distinctive ‘Green Wall’ granting volume

to the diminutive Concepción Chapel at the southern end of the urban corridor of 20th November Avenue.

≤ Conceptually it sits between the traditional European plaza and the great hall often found

in Mesoamerican architecture, though as it is largely composed of vegetation, it could also be considered a garden. It is a hybrid, which turns its heterogeneous nature into a strong statement of identity. The garden around the precinct will function as a buffer zone between the chaos of the city and the metaphysical character of the interior.

≤ The structure of the great precinct extends over 500 metres

in length, reaches a height of 18 metres and is built of steel wrapped in metal mesh. In the V-shaped steel-plate beams various species of plants will grow and completely envelop the structure. The variety of species means the appearance of the Green Wall will change with the seasons, and their growth over the years will lighten the geometric structure. Rodríguez Bernal
