Chelsea Mt. Branch Library Chelsea, Manhattan, New York Spring 2014
A hybrid library space at 10th and 26th in the Chelsea neighborhood of NYC directly adjacent to the High Line. This library is a new type of art space in the rapidly growing arts district. Taking rock climbing and its typical setting as inspiration, the building takes the form of a mountain, complete with a cliff face rear facade as well as a satellite structure on the other side of the High Line. The art of the human body and its movements while climbing are put on display for passersby as well as those inside the library who so choose to take a break to watch those outside climb to the rooftop cafe.
Form: The building began with a
typical rectilinear form found in various New York City buildings, this form was then cut and carved into before being split with three veins of ore to reference the mountains various climbing athletes ascend.
Plan Form: The three ore veins
were taken and simplified from images of iron, quartz and gold veins to generate three main divisions of space. These divisions then became the structure to support the building.

Podism University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia Spring 2015
A design/build style project that sprang from an interest in cubism and modernism and how the two styles of painting could meld into the structure and design of a living pod. With weight, material and cost considerations; this low cost pod was then put to the test for a 24 hour habitation period. The interactive component of the project drew many students from around the University to add their own touch to the various canvases.
Axonometric Explosion: The
assembly of the pod took place over the course of several days beginning with the procurement of materials both new and recycled. The axon shows each component as it was assembled and their arrangement on the pod frame.
Elevation and Section: The section
along with its various shading displays the layering of the pods along with the transparencies and dualities inherent with having double sided canvases in a 3-dimensional space as opposed to an easel or wall.
Lynchburg Line Lynchburg, Virginia Spring 2013
A small block in city of Lynchburg that was re-envisioned into a terraced gathering space, ideally situated in the rough topography of the city. The intended interventions included a series of metro stops connecting uptown and downtown Lynchburg to draw more students, citizens and workers in otherwise derelict centers. In the specific downtown site this included the revitalization of derelict warehouse buildings to generate shops, dining and entertainment centers for the population to congregate.
`Downtown Metro Stop: The layering of the
metro stop integrates the natural slope of the site and creates a gently stepped public space for those awaiting the metro. Above, skywalks are implemented to provide access to new shops, dining and other services.
Layered Infilitration: Taking a closer look at the downtown stop the imposed layers of flow through the site assisted by the connections of the structures and through the topography is evident.
Flows through Downtown: The
topography of the downtown area makes for a natural layering as the city slopes down towards the river. The line takes advantage of these natural descents towards the waterfront.
AIRPORT RIVER RIDGE MALL LIBERTY UNIVERSITY
Iterative Study: Throughout the
project a variety of stops based on other node choices were tested. Depending on their context the sites were designed to showcase their particular environment, from historical rail trenches to the peaceful island in the James River.

Climactic Relief Downtown, Fresno, California Spring 2016
This project utilizes localized water sources in order to create a community connector in an area that is at high risk for climate vulnerability. The roughly 1 mile long strip connects several neighborhoods and frequented areas to the downtown mural district and baseball stadium through a unifying and recognizable bike path. Sunken spaces create climate relief zones for the intense summer heat and are open for public cultural and arts events throughout the year. Native plants + evaporative cooling are calibrated to the potential water runoff that is collected throughout the year to provide these services.
Water Calculation: Using values
gal. of rainfall from both drought peri- 11,560 4,158 gal. ods and regular periods of rain, the plants in each section are calibrated to 656,942 gal. 404,272 gal. potential collected rainfall based upon catchment area.

A grape vine could use ~289 gallons of water

Desert + Mediterranean: Section A features an on grade planting scheme with local varieties of nopal and other desert plants. This is contrasted with a dug out courtyard with lavish olive trees and other Mediterranean low-water plants.
Citrus Orchard + Creosote Scrub: Section C depicts a sunken orchard, complete with various types
of citrus found in local precedent the Forrestiere Underground Gardens that lead up to a creosote scrub to connect to Fresnos desert/Mediterranean climate.

Coastal Sage Scrub + Vineyard: Section B contains a mixture of plants typically found in the nearby
Central Coast of California to create a lush and vibrantly colored landscape that then overlooks various grape vines, also reflecting the wine industry found in the area.
Woodland + Succulent xeriscape: Section D takes the nearby Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks
as inspiration for a variegated woodland that gives way to a xeriscaped plaza. This plaza is meant to inspire citizens to alter their own lawns, thus reducing water usage in the current crisis.
