PORTS-TO-PLAINS ALLIANCE WELCOMES NEW BOARD CHAIRMAN

John Osborne

The Ports-to-Plains Alliance Board of Directors elected John Osborne as its new chairman at their quarterly board meeting in Amarillo, Texas January 23. Osborne, President and CEO of the Lubbock Economic Development Alliance and Market Lubbock, replaces John Bertsch of Plainview, Texas who served as chairman since 2009. John Bertsch was a chairman who facilitated great involvement from our diverse and talented board of directors to set the direction for our organization. He empowered the staff to effectively implement the plans that advanced our efforts to achieve the original and sustaining vision for our communities. Under his leadership we have seen significant investments made throughout the corridor. We have built strong momentum to extend Interstate 27. We strengthened our partnerships throughout North America as evidenced by hosting two of our most attended annual conferences in Medicine Hat, Alberta and Del Rio, Texas / Acuna,

Coahuila. Although Mr. Bertsch is stepping down as chairman, we will continue to seek his input on our efforts and he will remain an important leader and dedicated champion for Ports-to-Plains. We are fortunate to have a strong leader in John Osborne who is ready to step forward to chair Portsto-Plains. Mr. Osborne has a strong background in economic development and truly appreciates how important the development of the corridor is to the growth of our region. His experience in managing nonprofit organizations and working for a volunteer board will provide unique insight into the day-today operations of the organization. The staff looks forward to working with our new chairman and continuing to bring infrastructure improvements to our region and secure a strong economic future Michael Reeves, President

“I am very excited to begin my term as chairman of the Ports-to-Plains Alliance,” said Osborne. “It is an honor to follow a legacy of great chairmen and continue the work of those who have dedicated themselves to the vision of Ports-to-Plains over the last 20 years. This organization has seen tremendous success and it remains vital to the development of the corridor. I look forward to further growth and success over the next few years.”

John Osborne is the President and CEO of the Lubbock Economic Development Alliance and Market Lubbock, two private, non-profit organizations with the common goal of increasing the economic opportunities in Lubbock. John is responsible for all operations, including business retention, business recruitment, workforce development, and foreign trade zone activities as well as the activities of Lubbock’s convention and visitors bureau: Visit Lubbock, and the Lubbock Sports Authority. RECEIVES IOM FROM U.S. CHAMBER

The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce and Institute for Organization Management, the professional development program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, is pleased to announce that Haily Assiter, IOM, Director of Communications and Public Relations graduated from the program on Sat., Jan. 6 in Tucson, Arizona. Awarded to all graduates of the Institute program, the IOM Graduate Recognition signifies completion of 96 hours of course instruction in nonprofit management. “Institute graduates are recognized across the country as leaders in their industries and organizations,” said Raymond P. Towle, IOM, CAE, the U.S. Chamber Foundation’s vice president of Institute for Organization Management. “These individuals have the knowledge, skills, and dedication necessary to achieve professional and organizational success in the dynamic association and chamber industries.” Since its commencement in 1921, the Institute program has been educating tens of thousands of association, chamber, and other nonprofit leaders on how to build stronger organizations, better serve their members and become strong business advocates. Institute’s curriculum consists of four weeklong sessions at five different university locations throughout the country. Through a combination of required courses and electives in areas such as leadership, advocacy, marketing, finance, and membership, Institute participants are able to enhance their own organizational management skills and add new fuel to their organizations, making them run more efficiently and effectively.

“Our Board of Directors strongly believes in staff development and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce does a fantastic job at fostering individual growth through interactive learning and networking opportunities,” stated Eddie McBride, IOM, President and CEO of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce. “We are thrilled to add a fifth IOM graduate (and a sixth this summer) to our current staff and I know that this recognition will benefit not only the chamber, but our members too.”

MEET LEADERSHIP LUBBOCK COMMITTEE MEMBER How long have you been associated with Leadership Lubbock? I’m a 2015 Leadership Lubbock graduate and I was on committee last year. This year I’m the CoChair and I will Chair the program in 2019. What are some of your favorite Leadership Lubbock events to attend? I enjoy all of the days, but the Austin trip is super fun and full of life-long memories. What do you feel is the most rewarding part of being part of the Leadership Lubbock committee? Influencing others and making a difference in this community. Leadership Lubbock brings awareness to so many who would otherwise not be privy and it is such a promotional program for Chamber members. Why is the Leadership Lubbock program important to you? It molds Lubbock’s future leaders into GREAT leaders and that’s so important to the success of our city’s businesses and community. What impression do you hope to leave on the Leadership Lubbock class? That women are a vital part to the workforce and that sales really is a doable and beneficial career. Many are intimidated by “Sales” and it’s really not “Sales.” It’s relationships. What is your favorite memory of your entire Leadership Lubbock experience over the years? Last year Chris Coke knew everyone’s name (Class AND Committee) by the end of class on day ONE! What advice do you have for someone thinking about applying for the next Leadership Lubbock Class? It’s a no brainer. What do you have to lose? Yes, there’s an application process that can be time consuming, but the benefits and pay off completely outweigh all that. Not only can Leadership Lubbock be a networking event, but also an opportunity to gain 50+ new friends Where do you work? Officewise. The #1 Independent Business Products and Furniture Dealer in Texas!

g n i r r e H y e l d n i L

What is your position and what does it entail? I’m the Marketing Executive for our Lubbock Officewise. I promote Officewise, our story, heritage, vision, and full-line capabilities of supplies and furniture to current and new Clients.

Share some info about your family/personal life. I was born and raised in Plainview, TX, I graduated from PHS in 1997 and carried on a family Texas Tech University tradition from 1997 to 2001. I received my bachelors degree in Marketing and moved to Dallas in June of 2001 to work my very first job, Staff Care, Inc. in Irving, TX. I stayed with Staff Care for 13 years and met my husband, Brian Herring, in September of 2008 on Match.com, in the BIG city, of all places! He was born and raised in Friona, TX. We married in May of 2010 and started a wonderful life together in the heart of Dallas. After we had our first little girl, Cameron, six years old, in September of 2011, we decided to sell his Dental Practice in Frisco and buy one in Lubbock to be closer to family. Plus, this allowed Brian an opportunity to fulfill his lifelong dream of practicing dentistry out in West Texas. He bought Dr. Ronald Phillips, DDS practice and we could not be more thankful for this opportunity. After moving to Lubbock we had our second little girl, Tess, three and a half years old. We recently added a Doxiepoo puppy, Hadley, to Casa de Herring this past Christmas and find great joy in her tiny little two and a half pound energetic personality. We couldn’t be happier in Lubbock and are thankful for this life we lead in the Lubbock Community.

Celebrate

AGRICULTURE WITH THE CHAMBER

Every year the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce joins our nation in recognizing our agriculture community. The Salute to Ag Luncheon allows the Chamber to show its appreciation by presenting the industry and its contributions to our economy. This year’s Salute to Ag Luncheon will be held on National Ag Day, March 20 at 11:30 a.m. The speaker is Aaron Alejandro, Executive Director of the Texas FFA Foundation and former President of the Texas FFA Association. Agriculture is a driving force in West Texas and the Lubbock economy. The Lubbock Chamber’s oldest committee is the Agriculture Committee and was formed 105 years ago to inform the community about the importance of agriculture and to provide information for the Chamber to advocate on agricultural issues. Agriculture makes up 33% of this region’s economy, brings in over 130,000 jobs to the High Plains and has been the backbone of Lubbock helping it grow into the city it is today. Lubbock and surrounding counties sit on the largest contiguous cotton patch in the world;

Thank You

however, the High Plains of Texas is also known for having over 8 million acres dedicated to growing wine grapes. The High Plains of Texas’ wine and wine grapes produces over 80% of the states wine grapes and more than $13.1 billion in economic value to the state. The third annual Lubbock Uncorked wine event will be held on April 28 which also allows the Chamber to yet again recognize the agriculture community and enlighten the public on why agriculture is so important to not only the local economy but regionally as well. For further information or sponsorship opportunities on the Salute to Ag Luncheon or Lubbock Uncorked, please contact the Chamber at (806) 761-7000. Visit LubbockAg.com to learn more about agriculture and its impact in the Lubbock community.

The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) an innovative program that guides students through the process of starting their own, real business, announces local business mentors and sponsors for this year’s YEA! class. The YEA! students have finalized their business idea and have been paired with a mentor from within the Lubbock business community. This industry expert helps the students to fine tune their concept, write a business plan and identify their target audience. Al Wise is the instructor during the pitch session and below is the list of student created companies along with the mentor assigned to each company to help cultivate that business. As a non-profit organization, YEA! relies on the generosity of the community, sponsors and people who identify with entrepreneurship and want to help pave the way for future entrepreneurs. Some help the student businesses get off the ground while others provide in-kind support or volunteer their time and services.
