A NOTE FROM LTD...

LOVE TODECORATESL.COM

Spring fever is here...! What a fun and exciting first few months of 2016. The premier and Second Anniversary issue that we published in January was a tremendous success and we are delighted to now present to you our latest, which we feel is one of our best yet! It dawned on us recently that LTD is no longer a new company or a new magazine. 2 years in Second Life速 is a long time and to this day, we continue to grow, making new clients and building our readership both on our website and for the publication. This is such a positive thing to see and for that, we are grateful for all of the support our loyal readers give to us each and every day. Since the beginning of this year, we have really tried to push our marketing. We have been doing a lot more promotion from our website on social media and via our in world group. We have also been working hard on improving and growing the LTD REAL ESTATE. This is one side of LTD that we are still exploring and learning in, but have so much promise for. We have gained some great new companies that have joined our program, and with the new features are planning to add, we are hopeful it will grow into something great of its own. The March/April 2016 Issue of LTD is full of so many inspirational ideas. We really wanted to push creativity in this issue. There are so many possibilities for us as residents and creators in this virtual world, so why not take full advantage of them? We truly hope you enjoy reading this one and we cannot wait to see you again in May!

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

LOVE TODECORATESL.COM

R... Outside the box... When I started to work with LTD sixteen months ago, I had never expected to ever be writing this Editor note one day or being the Editor. During the last months of working for LTD, I have learned and discovered a lot of new things. I have met a bunch of new and talented people and still, I was in my box doing what I am used to doing - so when LTD was looking for a new Editor and even my mind was thinking ‘Really? This is not you or what you are used to doing!’ but I had applied right away and now here I am, writing this Editor Note in a language that isn’t my native one and still working with an amazing team. Even though I am new to this, I am not alone because since the start of putting this new issue together (preparing the content line-up), we have some new talented people on board and I am looking forward to working with them. Times flies by so fast sometimes, and we are already here with the March/April issue of 2016. Spring arrives shy and it feels like Christmas has been just a couple of days back. My awareness of times sometimes escapes me at the best of times, and what would be better to say ‘Hello Spring’ than featuring the lovely creations by Tyrek Skywalker of Goose, the chosen Startup Designer from LTD and Tya Fallingbridge of Pixel Mode. Two Designers who were a pleasure to interview and talk to. This issue is also packed with a lot of great ideas from our talented stylists. Showing us how you can mix and match different style & time periods in our Eclectic Spread or how living ecologically can look like. Our family section went on vacation, while some stylists giving us ideas for pool areas, for when it will be warm enough to spend an afternoon just laying outside and gazing into the sky or a book. We will show you ideas for making a great first impression with your entryway, how to create your unique dining table and so much more. So I hope you all will have a lovely spring time and until the next issue, that will be loaded again with creativity and unique ideas for your home. So enough with all these words now and happy browsing.

Pixel Mode

L O V E T O D E C O R AT E - M A R /A P R 2 0 1 6

Nestled at the crossroads of style, sophistication, design and comfort is Pixel Mode. What started with a pair of nylons more than twelve years ago has catapulted owner and creator Tya Fallingbridge’s store into one of Second Life®’s most sought after for home furnishings and decorative items. But for Tya, it is less about being an established and successful business, and more about her love of creating. When Pixel Mode opened in June 2004, Second Life® was a much smaller community with little to no items available for residents. Tya, who hosted events back in the early days, recalls the first time she started experimenting with prims. “The first item I ever created was a pair of nylons. One day by best friend and I were sitting on my parcel when I started to play around with some prim shapes. I ended up creating a shoe. We didn’t have shoes then, only system textures,” she says. “We wore them that night to one of my events and everyone was asking where we got them. Later that week I started to sell my shoes and that is how my store took off.” Shoes were Pixel Mode’s base product in the beginning but Tya soon began offering jewelry, skins, clothing and hair, to name just a few. “You name it, I have done it,” she tells me. One year later, in 2005, she purchased her sim, Pixel Dreams, which is Pixel Mode’s permanent home. Although the road ahead was endless, it did come with a few bumps. The introduction of sculpts thrust Tya into some unknown territory. “I still continued to create, but that meant learning a new program and being able to understand the 3-D modeling process.” Tya found working with sculpts to be frustrating, so when mesh hit the grid, a whole new world opened up. “I was excited because of the creative possibilities. The limits were lifted. I still created shoes, taught myself rigging and created clothing.” As her comfort level grew with the modeling process, Tya launched Pixel Mode Home. “I quickly found more joy creating home and garden related items than anything related to fashion. In all honesty, I am not a big fashion person, in Second Life® or real life. I am most comfortable in a pair of blue jeans and a good cotton shirt, in both worlds.” Landing on the Pixel Dreams sim really does put the visitor at a crossroads with each direction presenting options for highly detailed, richly textured mesh furniture and home decorations. The outdoor department boasts everything from natural hot tubs and picnic sets to lighted trees. Fancy some new furniture? The bedroom, living and dining departments will dazzle with its mix of traditional, modern, rustic and whimsical choices. And for the resident looking for a new place to hang their hat, Pixel Mode offers a wide range of homes and skyboxes, including studio apartments, log cabins and even a clock tower. Tya finds her inspiration from a number of different places. A few pieces found in Pixel Mode are modeled after items in her own home. She also likes to pull out her cell phone while she’s out shopping to snap photos of cute things that catch her attention. A stack of home and garden magazines reside in a basket not too far from her desk so she can reach them quickly for a burst of inspiration when dealing with a creative block. Websites such as Pinterest are also key in sparking ideas, especially when dealing with specific themes she may have to design for events. Throughout the years, Pixel Mode has been featured at major events all around the grid. With so much going on at times, Tya credits one rather simple object with keeping herself focused. “My chalkboard is my lifeline when I am creating. It hangs on the wall to the left of my PC.” For every event she participates in, Tya lists the deadline, theme (if there is one) and what she is creating. When all is said and done, there is usually six weeks of information charted out on her chalkboard to help keep her organized and on time. “With the amount of events I do participate in -at times it can be five in one month- you have to be organized and plan everything. If not, you can find yourself stressed and unable to be creative.” Interior and home design, as with most trends, changes frequently. Over the past year, designs have become simpler and cleaner, with a timeless feel. But there is one trend Tya would love to tackle in 2016 - Victorian furniture. “There is an elegance with Victorian furniture,” she says. “This style is not easy to model in a day. It’s a style that would personally take me a few months to complete. This is where my chalkboard comes in handy. I will be more inclined to mix in several trends into one piece or set.”

Victorian furniture is just one of the many projects keeping Tya busy and engaged these days. Her real life has been quite hectic the past eight months but now that things are quieting down, she can refocus her attention on her brand and the direction she wants Pixel Mode to go. One project includes launching PM After Dark. This will be geared strictly towards adult content. Another is creating a traditional home, which includes, as she puts it, “all the bells and whistles.” So far, Tya has only laid out the floor plan but hopes to have something ready by the summer. There will also be some major updates and changes coming to the Pixel Mode website and marketplace store in the coming weeks and months, so keep an eye out for that. With all that keeps Tya so busy in Second Life®, she does find manage to find some time to enjoy activities off the grid. “My real life hobbies include astronomy and photography and I am currently reading A Brief History of the Universe by J.P. McEvoy. I am also an avid gamer, from The Sims franchise, Fallout 4, Ark Survival to waiting for Tom Clancy’s Division. If I am playing an MMO with some friends, they can get kinda frustrated with me because I will stop and look at the environment, models and textures. I can’t help but admire their work. It gives me a new found respect for what they do and are able to achieve.” That respect is echoed when looking at all that Tya has been able to do and achieve with her creations. Over the years people have often asked her where or how to start when it comes to building and designing. Tya’s advice? “My answer has always been, rez a prim and see where it takes you.” You never know. It could all begin with a pair of nylons or a shoe. Informations and Links: • • • •

When LTD Start Up project was announced last year, Tyrek Skywalker (Tyrek Resident) almost did not apply, because he did not think he was good enough. Whatever, or whoever, changed his mind, and made him apply on the last day, thankfully did so, because he actually won LTD Start Up 2016. The award he received has helped him invest more in Goose, in new software and such “I see that everywhere, not just in sales but also in members for the group and people who know the name Goose now” he explains the change brought to him and his brand by winning. Meeting on the Goose sim, we sat down on the deck in the garden part of the sim, where he and his partner, who loves landscaping apparently, set up for a relaxing environment. As a floating bed kept catching my eye, we started chatting from the beginning, with how he got into designing, creating in Second Life®. He has been working as a web and graphics designer in real life for five years. Although he spends a lot of time on Second Life® now, he still designs in real life too. His first trial at creating in Second Life® was with clothing. He tried designing clothes with templates from other users. That was not to his taste. He did not like using templates “I didn’t feel like it was mine as I used other people’s creations.” He wanted to create his own. On top of that, he liked decor better than clothing. What attracts him most in Second Life® is buildings and decor items people create and use in their houses and gardens. So was born Goose in July 2015. To start his new efforts, he first got Blender and found a teacher for basics, then he learned the rest himself through Youtube tutorials. He now uses a number of software products including but not limited to Photoshop, Maya, Quixel and Marvellous Designer. The only thing he doesn’t create himself is the animations. Aside from that all Goose items are original mesh content with Tyrek’s own textures. As for animations, he likes Kabuki animations and invests in them constantly since he does not like to keep using the same ones in all his creations. The appeal of Second Life® for Tyrek is to be able to create without distractions. He was open enough to share with us that he is autistic. When asked how that affects his life and his Second Life® he tells us it actually benefits him “I do not get distracted easy” the only problem he has is talking to new people and having too many people around, such as in clubs, he says “That is why I am always here and always busy, I get relaxed by it” he continues to tell us he cannot learn from texts or books but needs visuals. As long as he has visual aids he can easily learn things because he can focus really well. Another bit he lets us know is, when he starts creating, he knows what he is going to create but does not know how or what sort. If it is a bed, he knows it is a bed but cannot see a finished product in his head. So being autistic also helps him surprise himself in a way. It is wonderfully genuine of him to share this with LTD and our readers “Being autistic is who I am, cannot change that in Second Life®”. While we sit having a relaxed conversation on the deck, the calm and comfort of his creations surround us, which he declares is his aim. Looking at some of the newer items he created one cannot help but feel on vacation on a quiet summer day in a small coastal town. Tyrek sitting there in his leather jacket and chains hanging from his jeans may not be a look expected from someone who created these items but he informs us that after a while he might start working on grungier designs, adding he will never be seen in a suit because that is not him. For now, we will see more of the clean, calm look, as he has items in his list to create. His to-do-list includes outdoor and indoor items as well as buildings.

Keeping constantly busy, Tyrek’s schedule mostly depends on events, as many creators’ do lately. Goose is in a number of events, shopping and gacha alike. Tyrek believes they are a good way of reaching people and getting one’s name on the map, especially as a beginner. Like many other Second Life® users, he used to do most of his shopping on marketplace, and now he goes to events, which got us started talking about them. When asked what he thinks about this many events going on he told us with the amount around right now, and new ones starting constantly, he does not think it will continue this way for a long time. He believes there will be an overload of events soon, if there is not one already. He finds it hard to keep up with so many events as a creator because original mesh takes time and effort, which is why he thinks smaller events will fade out. He thinks event owners need to come up with new alternatives to survive and what he would really like to see is a way of taking people back to main stores, because there are wonderful stores out there but people are so focused on events that they do not even notice the stores anymore. Stores are the real vision of the creators, and events cannot provide that since there is a limited space and land impact to make use of. Speaking of main stores, we ask if he browses other stores, but with the work load he cannot really find the time, which is another reason he would like events to find a way of managing that. There are creators and creations that awe him on Second Life® of course but like many others he browses on the internet a lot for inspiration and his “gold mine” as he calls it is Pinterest. That might be true for many of us, who are passionate about decor. Tyrek strives to achieve his vision, keep land impact low and LOD high like many of his fellow creators. He is in a constant state of learning and does not stop educating himself “I still have a lot to learn” he says “LTD award just speeded it all up.” He keeps working on new ways of bringing better content to Goose customers. New programs to learn, new ways of doing things, new ideas for his creations… He hopes to be active in Sansar as well, once it goes live, but he does not think it will steal more than 10% of Second Life users and he has no intention of leaving Second Life® for Sansar or anything else. He also hopes for an invite from LL for creator early access but he is invested in Second Life® and the home and garden community here and will not leave us anytime soon. After we were done with the question & answer portion of our conversation, we walked around the sim and chatted about each item, as well as decor in general. Going through the sim, one can really see the improvement he has achieved in the seven months since he started Goose and that his work is bearing fruit “I have seen myself evolve a lot since then.” It is wonderful to see creators who continually spend an effort to better their work, and are in a constant state of growth. It is also a source of happiness for LTD to see we are able to contribute further to the home and garden community in Second Life® through helping a creator grow. We are excited to see what Goose will have in store for us next.

In the past buildings had a primary and highly functional purpose, to house or keep warm or even to keep shelter from the rain. In recent times however, we do see a movement towards architects focusing on achieving beauty within their designs. Whilst in Second Life®, there has always been a focus for some on ensuring their building, home or structure is aesthetically pleasing. Now, with that being said, what one would consider visually appealing is very subjective. Beauty in Architecture seems to have become something that is not set in stone or distinct, it really does follow that old saying that “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. Whilst this may be true, there are very basic concepts that seem to please most and can be used to form opinions and plans on what would constitute beauty in Architecture. Architecture can be considered a form of art, but unlike other forms it tends to be more restrictive. With this in mind, simple guidelines should be followed as well as functional and physical considerations. However, just as in other forms of art, there is a reality in all artistic work and the personal experience of it does come in play. The challenge is for the artist and society to communicate in unison to ultimately achieve what is beautiful. In the case of architecture, beauty is not just in the design of buildings that have good performance for the intended use but also to design buildings that have artistic presence and “speak to us.”

• WRITER: ROSALYN MACARTHUR • PHOTOGRAPHERS: JOHANNA FROST & JORDAN GIANT Aesthetic in Architecture is commonly linked to order and balance. If an area looks like it is in balance, it will most likely please the eye immediately. Conversely, your eye will instantaneously seek out this same balance in areas that do not possess this same equilibrium. While trying to create Beauty within Architecture especially within the Second Life® format, this is often the one design principal that does get missed. In a world where anything can be achieved, more traditional and visually appealing designs are often passed on for something a little different and new. There is a common belief that traditional classical architecture is obsolete in these modern times. However, after many years, the classical style remains very prominent in our Real Life and surprisingly Second Life® societies and is evidently anything but obsolete. Studying more classical ideologies and principles can be applied to any design or build and create a better understanding in creating balance and symmetry. Now, while this is not especially something that is focused on within Second Life® in a place where flying is the norm, it seems that there is a pull towards homes that are more conventional and in balance to Real Life. As we know style changes over time along with society and what modern style is trendy right now may change within the next year or two. In Real Life a change of home means a lot of work, selling, moving and actually having to unpack boxes. Within Second Life®, finding a new home or business which you consider beautiful is often as simple as using a rezzing box. Another critical aspect involved in creating Architecture beauty is proportion. Whilst some folks may prefer specific sized homes or even tiny homes as we see on television these days, big or small does not make a difference as long as the home is within proportion. Just as stated before, the creation of balance is what a lot consider to be vital in architecture, proportion is very similar. Windows, doors and balconies have to fit and look like they belong or they will stick out like a very sore thumb. Within Second Life® considerations proportion is definitely a huge consideration when choosing a home. While it is easy to landscape some properties away, there are a few Sims that have strict rules regarding homes being used to fit in with the general décor and feel of the sim. As previously mentioned beauty in architecture is extremely hard to define, the overall look of your home is not just the building alone. Architects consider the neighborhood, the location and the general look to ensure that the building fits in. At the end of the day, you could take a beautiful building that ticks all the boxes and without the right décor inside and out, it will not live up to the full potential or look as amazing as it could. This applies in Second Life® as well. Whilst builders such as Roost, Galland, Redgrave to name just a few do not come to your land to look around and then start designing, they do ensure that the homes that are put on the market can be adjusted and fit into many different areas. In these cases it is up to us, the landowners to make the decision on what works and create our own art in a way. We enhance what is already there with furniture, terraforming, and making gardens, beaches to showcase the home and show off what we consider to be beautiful architecture. This way, Architects within Second Life® have a specific role of inspiring us all to create our own version of beauty. Whether a building is functional is also a very important consideration to its beauty. While this may seem a little practical, if you cannot use it then it quickly becomes pointless. Rooms must be big enough for what you need them for, bedrooms must be able to hold bedroom furniture, and the kitchen must be able to be used as well as stairways, doorways and windows fitting into the general look. In Second Life® this is one rule that does get bent a little every now and then for the greater good. Items such as off sim décor may look beautiful but may not be entirely functional to go into. In these cases their function is to finish up an area. Another consideration to the beauty of Architecture is whether it is built well - Architecture is made to last for a long time. While it is very easy to spot whether a building is badly built which does affect the beauty that we see, small details, such as door hardware, windowsills, stair railings, and even baseboards, can make or break the architecture. Beauty of Architecture is in the smallest of details. The best architects focus on ensuring even the more minute of details is focused on and fits within the general look of the design. This will also ensure that the design will age well with beauty often seen within the character of a build. Some buildings are very much like fine wine and gets a lot better with age! While all of these go hand in hand to form the basic principles of general beauty in Architecture, the most important aspect of beauty is in based on what we consider to be beautiful. When you see a gorgeous dress and you can imagine yourself wearing it, picturing it in your own mind, it evokes emotions within you that ensure you remember the dress and the beauty of it for many days down the line. The same applies for anything you may consider to be beautiful. A word that is so easily used for basic things down to specific fruits to a significant other, can also be used to describe a building that reminds you of your childhood home, school or even one you walk past and just makes you stop and look. Emotion and feeling is what ultimately defines what you consider to be beautiful within Real Life or Second Life®. Beauty is ultimately subjective and objective.

The way you decorate your home in Real Life or Second Life®, is an extension of who you are. Your choices of décor and seeking out the right furniture that matches your own style has therefore become not just an amusing and entertaining shopping trip, but one that defines your lifestyle. There are so many different ways of styling your own home, some folks may prefer buying matching pieces with a few feature items; others may enjoy mixing and matching different designers, textures and colors to achieve their own unique style. When you are decorating your own home, there are no rules, no must haves and you can decorate every room with those favorite pieces from various designers from around the Second Life® grid to achieve your own personal style. Personal Style can be very subjective in the way that when someone walks into your home they may see your style as chaos, some will appreciate the importance of each piece and some will describe it as an amazing sense of design. No matter the name, the Eclectic way of decorating is currently still very much in style. Eclectic Style encompasses a variety of different styles, periods and is best achieved through the use of a variety of colors, textures and shapes. This decorating style can be characterized as being versatile which allows you to borrow ideas from all styles, ideas and theories and lets you combine them successfully. As a result of the lack of such set concepts, some may be tempted to take all of their own favorite pieces and place them together. A consequence of using this method of excess combination of styles could result in overkill. To avoid this decorating faux pas or to minimize the overwhelming effect, there are some very simple rules to adhere to for a successful eclectic look. Color is very much an integral part of Eclectic Style and seeking to blend vibrant bright colors can work very well together. In some instances, you may come across some obvious cases where basic general rules would need to be applied. Take the colors red and pink for example, together these two combined may be too strong or overwhelming however with the use of neutral colors within the setting this may enable you to bend the rules and help you achieve the look you wish. Using neutral colors to blend your stronger and or bolder feature items together will ensure that what would usually look as potentially too many different colors could possibly work cohesively together and make those feature items really stand out. There is no real reason for you to stick with the tried and tested colors when you can mix and match and really make your room stand out, unless you like or are comfortable with playing it safe. It is quite possible that in your own Real Lives you may have inherited items or antiques and did not know what to do with them or did not see the immediate value in their style. Let alone recognize their valued style, you probably had no clue where to place such items. These items would have probably been designated to the basement, tucked away in the attic or hidden in that unused spare bedroom where they could not be seen. These days, the appreciation for this style is steadily increasing and we are finding ways to integrate these specialty items into different rooms and décor within our homes. Much like Real Life and while we may not necessarily be inheriting any unique items, we all have a few pieces that we may have picked up from some of the very amazing Second Life® designers that are around that we consider a favorite. Taking that old Grandfather Clock, metal modern tables, eye catching sofa or even that favorite English tea set, you can very well combine all of these items to really show off who you are and what your style is all about. Eclectic Style is about taking those pieces of various time periods, aesthetic lines or look, style and colors and placing them together in a way that accentuates each piece individually as well as creating a unified look that works and shows off your own personal style. An Eclectic Style is partly defined by the use of color that is shown off in any room whether through the use of textures and multitude of fabrics. While it is important to ensure there is some neutral colors used to tie these all together, texture is created through colored and textured solids and patterns and trims, tassels or fringe. As noted before, there are no set rules, the sky is very much the limit and your own creativity and style is where you take your lead.

LOVE TODECORATESL.COM Whilst the composition of a room is based on your own style and tastes there is a very fine line between a finely composed planned décor and a jumble of assorted items. It is generally necessary to follow a theme or highlight specific items that fit. With the use of more neutral colored accent pieces, lamps, pillows and items that accentuate those items you want to focus on, your own style and creation coupled with those older looking pieces within your own Second Life® will surely come alive. However, you select to use the accessories you have chosen to incorporate, you can now take a room that may not have that finished look yet to your design eye and really finish it with a few very well placed items. Eclectic Style is all about taking risks; it is about experimentation and not being afraid of making a mistake. While in Real Life a mistake in your home décor may cost you money, in Second Life® we are a little more fortunate as we can modify some of these mistakes by way of retexturing and such which allows us to have a free hand and continue playing. Within this style, you can take those quirky items that speak to you, add them to items you would consider more classic, focus on those mismatched pieces we all have within our inventories and pair them with some of the amazing wall coverings and textures available around Second Life® and create something truly special.

Vacation

FA M I LY L I V I N G :

Sun, Sea, Surf and Sand is generally for most, a pretty good way to describe a successful holiday and within Second Life速 this is still very much applicable. With a world with so many places to explore, there is nothing quite like spending some relaxing time with the people you love. For some, this would be their significant other, that best friend or even your own children and family. While you can spend some time at your own home if you are lucky enough to have your own beach area, you are also able to rent land and areas especially designed for such a holiday or keeping in mind that for some the perfect holiday may not be the beach, the places and activities you can go to with your own family are endless. Paintball, visiting art galleries or even going out for those very popular shopping trips followed by some ice cream cones are just some of the various activities you can do within Second Life速 and I bet it will be a whole lot better for your wallet than doing these in Real Life might have been. With all these options around it is definitely time to say goodbye to the cold snowy Winter, pack up your family to explore and find your own perfect holiday within Second Life速!

Every day we make choices that affect the environment. Should we drive to work? Walk? Take the bus? Even deciding what to have for breakfast has an affect on our environment. Shifting our mindset towards a more ecologically sustainable way of living is a concept that has been around for decades. For some, ‘going green’ isn’t just an expression. It is a way of life. The basics to living an ecologically sustainable life boil down to lifestyle decisions. Those who practice sustainable living reduce their carbon footprint by altering their methods of transportation, how they consume energy and what they eat. The goal is to live life in ways that are in a natural balance and harmony with the Earth.

That all sounds lovely but how does one start on the path to sustainable living? Opt for renewable energy whenever you can. If possible, use a Green-e certified company that generates at least half of its power from wind, solar or other clean sources. Homeowners can research the benefits -and tax breaks- for installing rooftop solar panels or solar water heating. Drive smarter. Keeping your car in shape with regular tune-ups can increase fuel efficiency as high as 40-percent. And that includes something as minimal as keeping those tires inflated. Look around your home to find ways to improve energy efficiency. Make sure there is adequate insulation and energy-saving windows. Try out some of those energysaving lightbulbs for more efficient lighting. And for the savvy decorator, reusing items that may be causing some clutter in the house can enrich your personal style. ‘Green’ home decorating, decluttering and recycling creates a more unique atmosphere while getting in harmony with nature. Do-it-yourself projects and handmade decorations can lead to interesting showpieces, giving the home a more rustic look and feel. The saying may be a little retro, but ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ is just as important today as when the phrase was first coined. Every product has an environmental footprint, from the materials that were used to create it to the pollution and waste from the manufacturing and packaging. Not buying something can take some degree of willpower. Ask yourself if you really need it and if so, consider buying something that is gently used and look for minimal packaging. Ditch plastic whenever possible. Billions of pounds of plastic are swirling in the Earth’s oceans, killing and injuring sea turtles, seals, sea birds and thousands of other marine animals. A couple of simple adjustments to everyday life, including bringing reusable bags while shopping and avoiding products packaged in plastics, can make a huge impact on the safety of wildlife. Switching to a more ecologically friendly way of living doesn’t have to be as overwhelming as it might sound. One way to get an idea of how to incorporate sustainable living into our first lives is by visiting Etopia in Second Life®. Created in 2007 by WilliamTheWise Goodman, Etopia is now run by Namaara MacMoragh. The four-region sim showcases sustainable living using builds that model best practices in water management, wind and solar power, transportation, community living and urban development. Since tiny homes have become a popular way for people to reduce their carbon footprints in the real world, Etopia offers a demo home to show residents that bigger isn’t always better or cost effective. “In Second Life®, we measure our footprint by how many prims we use,” Namaara says. “If we use a smaller home it leaves us more prim space (LI) available for gardens, trees, and things that enhance our community experience. In real life if we lessen our impact by biking to work, purchasing local goods and services, eating organic from family farms we have cleaner air, lower health care costs, better food and water. The concept we wanted to show was how we don’t need to cut down a ton of trees to make a home.” Choosing to go green and live sustainably doesn’t mean we have to live without luxuries. It does mean we need to be more aware of our resource consumption and reducing any and all unnecessary waste.

THE STEPS

Decorating dining tables has always been one of my favorite areas of decor, with a little bit of modifications and inspiration you can make it your own. I hope seeing my own personal space will inspire you to do just that. For this particular setting, I wanted to keep it light and airy for spring. I decided to combine three place settings by selecting faces and choosing to alpha the textures out that I didn’t want. I then combined them all together to make one place setting, this makes the setting more unique. I always like to add flowers and candles to my settings and for this particular table I’ve chosen to combine two different flowers into one. I also added the rocks as a centerpiece to add a bit of an earthy feel. I hope you enjoy the setting I’ve created and enjoy making your own!
