Intro to Lighting GOOD LIGHTING IS CRITICAL Did you know that the human eye needs 10% more light every decade that it ages? At 30 years of age, the eye requires twice the light to see what you could see at the age of 10 years. At 50, a person requires six times the light needed at the age of 10, and at 60 years, it is fifteen times that amount. This is why good lighting is so critical for all aging eyes, and particularly important for anyone with low vision. For the low vision user, proper lighting can make the difference between being able to read something easily, or not read it at all. Generally speaking, the better quality of light used with a magnifying lens, the less magnification power that may be needed. LS&S offers a wide variety of lighting forms suited for different purposes and preferences.

HELPFUL TIPS:

• When reading, try to put the sun at your back.

• Try to reduce glare as much as possible in your house. If you cannot reduce the source of glare and you are still being bothered, try using a pair of indoor, glare reducing sunglasses.

• General ambient light helps you move throughout the house, but position small task lamps wherever you may find yourself working on a different activity—on the kitchen counter, on a desk, or even on your dresser to help find matching socks.

• When using a reading lamp, position the lamp between your eye and your reading material, i.e. below your shoulder. This will increase the perceived strength of the light, and may allow you to reduce the wattage, and therefore glare and heat, of your light bulb.

• Try to allow as much sunlight as possible into your house. This is the best form of light there is.
