find opportunities even in this uncertainty.

We can learn from how nature has turned around in more positive ways than we could ever think of. While we are locked down, the air has become less polluted and the birds have come closer to our surroundings to regale us with

songs, to entice us with their graceful dances on wide green lawns. Life thrives! As the American poet, Emily Dickinson, puts it,

Hope' is the thing with feathers— That perches in the soul— And sings the tune without the words— And never stops—at all— So, thus, our hope too – it shouldn’t stop at all.

I would like to thank the Office of Placement and Career Services for launching yet another Career Fair. Themed ‘Access to your Future,’ it views that future as filled with opportunities to which you simply need to get access.

I would say that the first step to getting this access is to have a positive hopeful attitude. In that way, you can face challenges squarely – knowing what you can do (and celebrate it) and also what you cannot do (and ask for help). The second step is to open yourself to the opportunities that lie before you. The Career Fair will widen your horizon of job prospects, so explore possibilities. Don’t be looking for a high level post right away. You will have to work your way towards it in the not so distant future. Expertise must be tempered with humility. The world of work has a lot to teach you yet. The third step, thus, is to approach the career path with a spirit of discernment and good judgment – matching skills with work needs, balancing the idealism of self fulfilment with the practical considerations of daily living.

I wish you all the best in

Job Hunting Amidst the Pandemic

ABOUT THE COVER Last year, our lives were suddenly upturned by the COVID-19 pandemic. A flashback into last year’s events: the whole country was placed on lockdown and travel restrictions were strictly implemented, schools and businesses suddenly had to close, the unemployment rate skyrocketed, and the country’s economy suffered and is still suffering from the impact brought by the pandemic. Until now, it seems that the end is still not within our sight. One might say, “the future seems so bleak.” Recent events had all of us grasping for stability in a time full of uncertainty. This past year had surely made us realize a few things about life that we had overlooked before but out of those things, one thing I would like to highlight is that in a resource-limited setting, we should exhibit ingenuity in utilizing those tools which are accessible to us and in our case, that would be technology. While confining ourselves to the safety of our homes may not be the ideal situation, we are called to be creative and resourceful to work with what we have for us to enable us to grab identified opportunities. Recent events should not discourage nor stop us from relentlessly pursuing the dreams we deem worthy. Despite being confined to the four walls of our homes, we can explore the whole world with our fingertips—literally—with technology. What was once miles away can now be in our hands with just a click. With the theme for this year’s virtual career fair, “Access to your Future”, the aim of this career fair is to provide the stepping stone for students to achieve the future they envision themselves in amidst the uncertainty that we are shrouded in. Technology is a powerful tool; it can bring us closer to our future without leaving the comforts and safety of our homes. “Seek, and it shall be opened for you.” Dear students, use this opportunity to jumpstart your journey after your stay in the university and to pave the way to the future you have envisioned for yourself. All the best!

PYMETRICS

H

ave you ever applied to large companies like J.P Morgan Chase, the Boston Consulting Group, ColgatePalmolive or McDonald’s? After submitting your application through the vast job portals and vacancies

at these companies, you might have experienced receiving a link asking you to answer several Pymetrics games. Indeed, while this is initially nerve-racking, especially for first-time job applicants, the Pymetrics games certainly prove to be beneficial for both job candidates and HR professionals.

WHAT IS PYMETRICS AND WHY SHOULD WE USE IT? Without a doubt, technology has certainly improved both the accuracy and efficiency of procedures that were previously done manually— including recruitment processes. In fact, many digital recruitment platforms have allowed Human Resource Managers and recruiters to comb through thousands of job applications within a shorter span of time. However, it is worth noting that these technologies can also benefit job applicants as much as HR professionals.

One amazing example of an application that aims to benefit both job seekers and recruiters is Pymetrics, an Artificial Intelligence platform that aims to provide the market with fair and accurate talent matching solutions. While most job applicants often view Pymetrics games as obstacles that must be surpassed in order to get their dream job, Pymetrics’ true vision is to “realize everyone’s true potential” by reducing the human bias in the traditional job recruitment process while ensuring that the job application experience is largely human-centered.

Pymetrics' true vision is to "realize everyone's true potential"

14

PYMETRICS

WHAT EXACTLY DOES PYMETRICS TEST? Through the combined use of academic research, behavioral science, and audited AI technology, Pymetrics creates games that measure a candidate’s cognitive, emotional, numerical, and logical intelligence. Thus, Pymetrics is largely concerned with measuring soft skills that job applicants normally self-proclaim at the end of their résumés and CV’s.

Effort Risk Tolerance Fairness Emotion Attention

Based on my own experience answering the 12 core Pymetrics games for J.P. Morgan Chase, the platform was able to give me a relatively accurate picture of my cognitive and emotional capacities, even showing me which parts of my personality are unique from the rest. In particular, I was made to answer fun and simple games which measured my behavior based on the following categories: Effort, Risk Tolerance, Fairness, Emotion, Attention, Generosity, Learning, Focus, and Decision Making. In addition to this, Pymetrics also gives company clients the option to include 4 additional games in their assessment to measure the candidates’ numerical agility and quantitative reasoning. Finally, some companies might even conduct digital interviews through the Pymetrics platform.

Given these factors, the job application process really varies depending on the company you apply to. However, it is worth mentioning that your Pymetrics core game results can only be changed after one year. Thus, your Pymetrics profile is valid for a whole year in any company that uses Pymetrics as part of their application process.

Generosity Learning Focus Decision Making

Pymetrics creates games that measure a candidate’s cognitive, emotional, numerical, and logical intelligence.

16

PYMETRICS

IF YOUR PYMETRICS RESULTS ARE STUCK WITH YOU FOR A YEAR, HOW DO YOU ACE THE PYMETRICS GAMES? In reality, there is no one sure way to “ace” the Pymetrics games particularly because the games are highly objective. In fact, according to Harvard Business School (2015), Pymetrics measures a candidates’ soft skills in a “non-directional” way. Because of this, there are really no wrong answers to the Pymetrics games. There are only answers that may not match a company’s culture or the job descriptions.

Regardless, here are some tips for success in your next Pymetrics assessment:

1. DETERMINE WHICH FIELDS, INDUSTRIES, AND COMPANIES YOU WILL THRIVE IN.

Aspiring applicants like you can certainly spend some time identifying which careers you wish to pursue by assessing your

aptitude,

skills,

as

well

as

your

personalities.

Remember, the first part of every job hunting journey is to know which opportunities fit you best! After all, applying for every job opening that you encounter might not be an efficient use of your time. So, before you start applying, take

some

time

to

reflect

on

your

personality,

your

experiences, and your passions. If you’re still unsure of what to do, don’t worry! You can always set up online career consultations with a professional at the Loyola Schools Office of Placement and Career Services (LSOPCS). careers

To access this, you can request for a special link from the LSOPCS that will allow you to take the assessment and browse through its career guide. Regardless, there are countless opportunities to determine which career path is the right one for you. Another important consideration when choosing for a company to work for is how it influences your health and safety. Thus, aside from looking for companies whose mission, vision, values,

21

2. TAKE WEBINARS, ONLINE COURSES, AND VIRTUAL OPPORTUNITIES THAT CAN HELP YOU DEVELOP THE SKILLS YOU NEED FOR THE JOB YOU WANT.

Once you’ve determined which fields and companies you wish to grow

in,

it

becomes

incredibly

important

to

acquire

the

necessary skills to succeed in the career vacancies that fit your

preferences.

Luckily,

the

Internet

is

filled

with

reliable resources and articles that you can use to learn more about various career paths. At the same time, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has brought about the rise of many reliable online learning platforms like Coursera MOOC

, Udemy

, Skillshare

, edX

,

, and other sites that offer

online courses and certifications on hundreds and thousands of

topics

related

to

your

field

interest.

With

more

research, you can even find niche websites that offer free courses related to the specific career you wish to pursue. For example, if you want to develop skills in marketing like Search

free,

affordable,

and

reliable

references,

you

can

certainly start learning at any time and develop the skills that could help you succeed in whatever career you choose to pursue. However, it is certainly not enough to simply develop these new skills. Recruiters must also see if you have the capacity to apply these skills in real-life situations. Thus, it

is

also

important

to

participate

in

extracurricular

activities that allow you to hone your skills. After all, an online certainly

3. DON’T BE AFRAID TO PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD AND NETWORK ONLINE.

Since

allow

you

to

connect

with

professionals.

In

fact, you can start building your network by signing up for a LinkedIn account, attending company talks, or participating in free online career fairs conducted by various Philippine universities and companies. Use these opportunities to learn as much as you can and meet people that belong in the fields, companies, and industries that you wish to be a part of. Don’t be shy to connect with the people you meet in these professional events through LinkedIn, adding a note to remind them of who you are. Most importantly, never forget to check in every once in a while with the people you meet. After all, you are just as wealthy as the network you have made.

23

4. SUBSCRIBE TO JOB SITES AND ONLINE JOB RESOURCES.

Indeed, the advancement of the Internet and new technology has also brought about the rise of online job boards where companies can post their job listings and job hunters can submit their job applications. In fact, websites like JobStreet, Glassdoor, and Kalibrr have grown in popularity over the past few years because they have the capacity to digitize and simplify both the recruitment and job hunting process. Thus, as a new job hunter, you should certainly consider using these available resources to find your dream job at your dream company, setting your preferences according to your desired fields and companies to be notified via email about new job openings. At the same time, you can also subscribe to the job portals of your dream companies to receive up-to-date news about their vacancies. As a side note, however, I would certainly recommend using a new email address specifically for job hunting and professional purposes to be able to organize your emails properly.

24

5. FINALLY, DON’T PANIC; PREPARE!

As with everything, finding a job or an internship opportunity takes time and the job search experience is definitely different for everybody. After all, everyone possesses a different set of experiences, skills, and goals. Thus, while it can certainly be tempting to compare our own career especially

journey with that of others, with LinkedIn publicizing

everybody’s career achievements, it is important to remember that everyone has a different story to tell. In the end, job hunting is really all about telling your story and applying for a position and place that will appreciate your past experiences and your existing skills. So, instead of looking at other people’s accomplishments, honor your own and focus on revealing your story in the best way possible.

O

OPENNESS As a person with a high level of openness to experience, you may be fond of venturing out to try anything at least once. In the frenzy however of new experiences and taking yourself to where your curiosity brings you, it’s easy to forget to balance your commitments. In order to avoid the frustration of burnout, cramming things, or even letting go of tasks, it doesn’t hurt to make a list of your gimmicks. There may be times that you find yourself having to drop ambitions because of a lack of time but some ways you can avoid this from happening is by making a schedule or putting up sticky notes to remind you of all of the things you signed up for. On the other hand, for those who scored low on openness, you constantly stick to routines and are probably very grounded to what you believe in. Although the stability of having routines and strict daily activities soothes your mind, you should also try to learn from your counterpart. Find it in yourself to experience the “unchartered waters” and maybe by doing so, you’ll find something extremely beneficial for you to add to your routine— or maybe it could even reconfigure your days into more efficient ones.

40

43

CONSCIENTIOUSNESS A high score on conscientiousness, can mean that you’re a workaholic. After setting up numerous goals for yourself, you may end up feeling tired of expecting yourself to excel each time. Please take a moment each time to look back and see your progress and where your ambition brought you. Your selfdiscipline is laudable and you should take pride in that. Those who scored low on conscientiousness on the other hand are seen to be impulsive and disorganized. And although the spontaneous bursts of energy offer high amounts of progress each time, it doesn't quite help with self-discipline. A hack to this is giving yourself little rewards every time you finish a number of tasks. This reinforces yourself to look forward to seeing your steady progress.

44

45

EXTRAVERSION For the extroverts that bask themselves in the company of others and excitement, don’t forget to think about yourself every so often. Setting up discord calls with your friends may bring you delight and maybe even solace but there may be times that you are overcrowding yourself in order to avoid something bothering you. In times like these, you should learn to step back, and possibly try exercises that strengthen your mindfulness. By doing so, you allow yourself to take a breath from the eye of the storm, from which you can allow yourself the time to focus and reposition before setting on once more to find a way to navigate through everything you’re currently dealing with. For introverts, you should try initiating to spend time with your social circle or your peers. Keeping to yourself is definitely comforting but surrounding yourself with the energy and excitement of others every now and then might give you a different but maybe a much-needed sense of comfort. The ironic thing about the recent lockdowns is that the isolation may become daunting even for introverts. Taking part in Netflix parties every now and then with your close friends can be helpful during these periods of loneliness.

46

49

AGREEABLENESS Those who scored high on agreeableness place others’ opinions in high regard. This definitely helps when it comes to collaborating with various people but it could also become a reason for you to keep your opinions solely to yourself. While it brings about a certain sentiment of peace, you should also know that it prevents others from gaining value from your personal insights as well. Who knows? Maybe your ideas can someday contribute to developing the next big thing! Scoring low in agreeableness may mean that you are more likely to be distant from your peers. Competitiveness and independence are your strong suits but you also tend to put yourself and your choices in front of others. A piece of advice that may help is to let people in on your decisions. The work setting is definitely competitive but making connections with your coworkers may help in boosting all of your progress.

50

51

NEUROTICISM To those who scored high on neuroticism (someone who tends to fixate on the negatives), you may find yourself struggling to stay calm. There may be numerous times when you feel generally overwhelmed with everything going on around you and what could help regarding this is to write a mantra or a quote that would help relieve you of the negative emotions and posting it somewhere you often look at to serve as a positive reminder for yourself that things are bound to get better. Likewise, you can also choose to let your thoughts and emotions out on paper then destroying it afterwards. There's a sense of relief in being able to conquer something tangible in the position of what was bothering you previously. Now, if all that seems corny to you, how about listening to a soundtrack full of your favorite songs? Allow the positive emotions that the music brings you to seep in. I personally love this playlist by Patty Suarez.

YOUR ONE-STOP ONLINE JOB INTERVIEW CHECKLIST

55

F

inally, the time has come for you to apply for a job at your dream company. You rigorously checked all the qualifications and see yourself fit to be one of their employees. You submit your resume, portfolio, and other requirements, and wait a few days for an update on your application. Alas, you receive that email – you are going to have your first online job interview! The interview is a crucial step in establishing the initial relationship between you and the employer. In this stage, not only should you market yourself as a competent, responsible, and well-rounded employee, you should also be able to gauge whether or not the job offer is appropriate and fitting to your needs and skill set. Feeling anxious about the interview? That is completely normal! The job interview will be among the many firsts of your life after graduation. However, to increase your chances of landing the job, keep in mind that you must give the best first impression to your interviewer and make it last until the end of the interview! Before you answer that call or click that Zoom or Google Meet link, here are seven questions to keep in mind to make sure you are more than prepared to slay that interview!

56

Have you prepared the technology necessary for the interview? Check if you have a device with a working camera and microphone. Familiarize yourself with the video teleconferencing platform that shall be used for the interview. Make sure that you have a stable internet connection and try to test all your devices before the conduct of the interview. Tip: During the interview, keep your phone on silent mode and close all the internet browser tabs on your computer. This allows you to focus on the interview and not panic when your device rings due to the notifications!

Are you presentable

and dressed appropriately? Do not just wear a T-shirt! While you can wear almost nothing waist down, make sure you appear professional and respectable on camera. Clothe your upper body as if the job interview were conducted faceto-face. Remember: dress to impress, dress for success! If you are unsure of whether or not you will be asked to stand, wear appropriate attire for the lower body and feet as well!

Is your area suitable for the interview? Make sure that your device is on a static surface and is facing a clear, clutter-free background. Your room or interview area must be well-lit. It should also be free from any visible or audible distraction that may undermine the flow of the interview, as well as your performance and the impression you give your interviewer.

58

Are you connecting yourself well with the employer?

Are you prepared for any contingencies and issues? Have a back-up data connection ready by your side should your internet connection become laggy. Be sure that you have indicated your contact details in your resume, in case that you got disconnected from the video call and would have to resort to a phone call. Hint: You can also opt to ask for your interviewer’s cell phone number so that you can offer to give him/her a call in case your connection breaks off. If you have a back-up device, prepare it in case you encounter technical errors on your laptop or phone. Doing these shows that you are a proactive candidate with great initiative.

Even if it is the online setting, interviewers will assess whether or not you can maintain good social relations through the interview. Smile! Try to make eye contact with the interviewer by looking at the camera instead of the person at the screen. Adjusting your posture also radiates confidence and helps you calm your nerves! Be mindful not only of your tone, but also of your body language and facial expressions, as these serve as the only visible nonverbal cues that the interviewer can use to assess your personality. Tip: You can also thank the interviewer for taking their time to conduct the interview with you. You can do this during the call immediately after the interview or after the call via email.

Very important tip: If you are aware of an unavoidable distraction that may affect the conduct of an interview (e.g. a nearby ongoing construction), inform the interviewer before you begin! This allows them to see you as someone who can be prepared and professional despite the circumstances.

60

Are you well-informed of the company specifics and of what the job offer requires you to do? While it is expected that your resume should convince the employers that you have the necessary skills and experience to perform the job, knowing the ins and outs of the job offer, as well as the values of the company you are applying for, puts you at a great advantage. This allows you not only to prepare for the possible questions the employer will ask, but also for you to raise questions and clarifications about your role as an employee in the company. During the interview, you may keep an outline of your talking points. Having a pen and paper to take notes also helps you keep track of what you want to say and of any information you got from the interview to help with your decision-making.

Did you follow-up after the interview? Following-up the status of your application with grace and respect towards the interviewers can be an opportunity for you to stand out among the other applicants. If you can, try to mention a specific detail about the interview that makes you want to work at the company. However, be mindful of your language in the email; you do not want to come off as arrogant or imposing!

Preparing for online interviews might be nerve-wracking at the start – and again, it is normal! You can follow these interview tips not only to ease your anxiety but also to show the employer that you are technologically adept, adaptable, sociable, and diligent – all of which are characteristics that employers look for.

Good luck and go get that job, Atenean!

n a few months or so, most probably in June, seniors (and super seniors) will be bidding goodbye to the home that sheltered them for years, while the rest c ancan say they have finally survived a completely virtual academic year. Finishing college is a huge milestone that comes with a next chapter of deciding where you want to land in - to your dream job, mayhaps. But graduating or not, it helps to know the ABCs of the whole preparation and application process as job and internship hunting break into the scene. Even as early as your freshman year, familiarizing yourself with the ins and outs of the career game plan will definitely save you from the hassle of leaving it to your last months in the university. Don’t fret if you are still clueless! We’re here to guide you through some stages of applying for a job or internship.

2

Before beginning to craft your resume, it is important to know what you really want. Some may have already figured out the career path they want, but there are a lot more who are undecided. This can be be because becausethey theyare a jack of all trades or maybe theyof just don’t know are a jack all trades or what to do (but it’s valid!). Ask yourself, this a field I would be happy maybe they just “Is don’t about what and to be do interested know (but it’s in learning for a longterm?” valid!). Ask yourself, “Is this a field I would be happy about and be interested in learning for a long-term?” You don’t necessarily need to be the best in the field you want to immerse yourself in. So long as you put your heart into it, you’ll definitely have that growth!

Make use of job-hunting sites

1

After getting a better idea of your ideal situation, you can start looking for openings related in that area of expertise. Scouring for leads through jobhunting sites like Jobstreet and LinkedIn can bring you ease. With the use of optimization tools, meant to help both you and employers, it’s easy to find job listings that are already filtered to your skills and preferences. With plenty of companies shifting their main career page to Linkedin, you might want to work on building your profile on the platform. Aside from showcasing your skills and achievements, this can be a great way to expand your professional network in your target industry, locally and globally. As a tip, you can start by connecting with your blockmates or orgmates! If you are looking for internship opportunities, you can join Facebook groups such as the Ateneo Jobs and Internships and Startup Philippines: Internships. There are plenty of industries represented in these groups so be sure to check in every now and then to not miss out on the opportunities. Bonus: You can easily perform a background check if it is legitimate.

Know your company Once you’ve selected a handful of organizations that interest you it’s important to make sure you RESEARCH and get to KNOW them. This will not only help you understand the company’s purpose and values, but also help you align the company with your WHYs. By doing so, you allow yourself to reflect on whether this company really does suit your beliefs and aspirations.

CRAFT YOUR RESUME You’re done assessing whether a company feels right for you. You now turn the table and allow them to assess whether you are right for them. For any position and company you apply for, they are surely bound to ask for a copy of your resume. A well-written resume can be crucial for your employers to know you better; that’s why some consider it as the gist of job application. Through a single sheet of paper (or page in a pdf file), you should be able to market yourself to the recruiting managers by listing the reasons why they should hire you. But how can we make a well-presented resume? Let me ask you a favor. If you’ve ever made a resume before, may it be for your SHS immersion, org application, or some event you joined in, find and open the file then scan through it. Does it have your photo in it? How about your religion or your parents’ information? Does it exceed one page? Does it include information from 10 years ago? If you answered YES to at least one of these questions, sorry to break it to you, but you’re doing something wrong. All that were just mentioned are some of the DON’Ts of crafting a resume. With that, let me share with you some tips on how to improve your current resume. 67

1

Make sure to keep it at one page only. If it exceeds, then it’s already a Curriculum Vitae or more commonly referred to as a “CV”. One difference between a CV and a resume is that the former isn’t designed for a specific job/position and the latter is. Our goal here is to make the company we apply for feel special. So if you are thinking of applying for multiple jobs, make the extra effort to customize every resume you will pass. For example, if you are applying for an HR and Marketing position (these are two totally different fields), you must only include experiences relevant to each of the fields. However, some companies may ask for a CV so there is no need to necessarily curate it according to the field, so long as the information written on your CV may be relevant to the company you are applying for!

2

Including your work experiences is good, but describing specific duties and accomplishments is BETTER. Putting on your resume that you were the Vice President for Human Resources in your school org is not enough to convince the recruiter that you are qualified for the job. Add descriptions to it that answer the questions, “What were your daily responsibilities? What have you accomplished as the VP HR to create value in the organization ?” It would be a plus to include quantitative figures such as “Resolved issues concerning member relations through a project that boost member engagement by 10%” That one seems more convincing, don’t you think?

3

Since it is only one page, make sure to be concise and ALWAYS double check your grammar. Placing lengthy descriptions may bore the hiring manager. Presenting a well-written resume may give the HR the impression that you are someone meticulous and have a good command of the language. Additionally, make sure that your descriptions follow parallelism. If you start with an action verb, “Resolved issues concerning...”, don’t follow it with another bullet that says, “Responsible for the member engagement...”, instead specify by saying “Created a rewards system to increase member engagement”.

4 Keep the color and layout simple and readable. Even if creative resumes are becoming a trend right now, most recruiters still prefer a simple resume layout. If you are applying for a creative design position, you may opt to get creative with the layout and design but always leave some appetite for your portfolio ;)

5

Don’t include information from over 5 years ago. Even putting the school you went to when you were in kindergarten or grade school is not necessary. That seminar you attended in 2008? Delete it. These highlight the fact that you lack more recent experiences and that you are simply trying to put fillers in your resume so it’s really for the best if you include only experiences from at most, 4 years ago.

If you ever need someone to help you go over your resume, you can schedule a consultation with any of our friendly career advisors. LSOPCS Consulation Services

68

Compose your cover letter Sending your resumes usually requires you to make a cover letter. But what is it exactly and how do you make one? Doing so entails knowing the addressee of your email. So start by putting the name of the HR officer or recruiting manager of the company and introduce yourself first. Don’t start the body of the email with “Attached is my resume for my job application.” You would not want to make them go like “Uhmm okay, and then?” Simply start with “I am Johncen Belisano, and I am writing to express my intent in applying as...” Then you may continue giving them that justification as to why you stand out among the other applicants. Make sure to not make it generic such as “I am a team player and I can handle different tasks.” Be specific and personalize it so the company can have a better grasp as to why you are a good fit for the job. You may include the positions you held in different organizations or your work experience with your previous internship, but make sure not to reveal everything in your resume. You may also want to answer the question, “Why do you wish to do an internship in that company in particular and not any different company?”(Remember, you should make them feel special)

5

P.S. Make sure the email address you will use in applying for jobs sound professional. Don’t use the ones you made when you were 11 that sound a lot like princess_punkr0ck or s3xybaby71.

Time moves forward. This once in a lifetime milestone is slowly becoming within your arm’s reach. You’ve done it! You’ve braved your 4 years or so in college and now you’re ready to take yet another leap into a new unknown. At this point, allow yourself to be open to the many opportunities that may come your way. And who knows? In a few months from now, after going through this series of preparations and applications, your dreams might finally be in your hands.

The A That Matters Most: Setting Boundaries in a Remote Work Setup

Written by: Jurgen Excel Coyoca 71

Have you ever regretted getting an A in any of your subjects?

W

as there a moment when you spent studying so hard for many many sleepless nights to ace your Final Exam? Or, were there times when you had to skip meals with the family to finish a group project? Were there times when you thought to yourself, “Do my A’s really matter?” Don’t get me wrong – there is nothing wrong with wanting an A. In fact, a near quatro cumulative QPI looks good on your resume. However, in the long run, is the achievement and prestige worth the lost hours for self-care and bonding with loved ones? Some people say that grades do not really matter when you already have a job. While that may or may not be true for some, your marks should not only be the A’s that matter. As you enter the professional world, you will realize that there is more to life than academic or professional achievement. It may not even be worth the recognition if you sacrifice your personal well-being. As you aim to be productive and competent in your profession, remember that your health and wellbeing are important as well. You should know how to practice healthy work habits and keep necessary boundaries to maintain a healthy professional lifestyle. Here are some A’s to keep in mind as you go about your life after Ateneo (or even as you finish your studies in Ateneo).

72

Y

our workplace is vital to your performance as someone working working remotely, so choose a comfortable area where you will work. If you already have one, make sure that it is tidy. Free your work desk from any clutter, and place only the most important objects such as your stationery on it. Declutter your digital space by deleting unnecessary emails, documents, and files from your laptop or work device. You can also opt to save them in a cloud or a hard drive for future reference. These do not only only allow you to work more freely, seamlessly, If you want to go the extra mile, and productively; they you can also personalize your can also lessen your workspace! This will help you feel levels of anxiety and more comfortable and take control of stress while working.

ASSEMBLE AND ASSIMILATE: OWN YOUR WORKPLACE!

your productivity. However, keep in mind to set the atmosphere of your desk as professional, so refrain from eating or scrolling down your social media feed while at the desk. This might blur the division between home and work, so keep in mind that although you can make your workspace feel warm and cozy, you must create defined boundaries of what to do and what not to do in this area.

74

ADOPT AND ACCUSTOM: CREATE A SCHEDULE THAT WORKS BEST FOR YOU!

W

ith various tasks and responsibilities that come with your roles at work and at home, it has become seemingly impossible to follow a fixed schedule. It has become implicitly expected that we can work at flexible working hours. There is this tendency to overwork yourself, which may be counterproductive and unhealthy in the long run.

To make your hectic work days more bearable, prepare a checklist of your tasks for the week and divide the time you allot for them into chunks. small chunks. This allows you to set small attainable goals to measure your daily productivity. Set the hours of the day when you are most productive (or, when the company requires you to be present) as your working hours. You can use any productivity app such as Google Calendar or Notion to organize and time block your tasks. You can check YouTuber Jules Acree as she shows how she batches her tasks using Google Calendar! If you use Notion, you can check out how YouTuber muchelleb’s explainer instead! Make sure that you follow a consistent routine. Even if your schedule seems to be composed of back-toback meetings or deliverables, ensure that you allot enough time for hygiene, self-care, and meals. Avoid attending meetings from 8AM to 5PM without having eaten lunch or taken a bath. Allow yourself to have at least 7 hours of sleep . so that you can still work productively the next day.

75

Tip: Don’t just time block your task schedules; you can do the same with your self-care routines as well! Treat these routines as part of your daily tasks. Eat three complete meals, brush your teeth, and take a bath. You owe your mind and body that love!

C

ollaboration and coordination with employees and departments matter in most professions, even in remote set-ups. It has become more difficult to separate work from other matters when the struggles of working at home come into play. This is where communication becomes more vital than ever.

ADDRESS AND ADJUST: COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR TEAM!

When you talk to others, be sure to be mindful about their struggles and circumstances. Be more compassionate. They also have their own other commitments and working hours, so try to exude respect towards their time and energy. If you are a member of a team, try your best to be aware of each other’s schedules. Have a set formal communication channel, whether it be through email, Messenger, or Google Teams, to ensure that the dynamic between you and your colleagues remains professional. Most importantly perhaps, reciprocate the efforts efforts of your colleagues by meeting deadlines and While it is important to be considerate submitting quality towards others, you must learn to be able to deliverables. This not only set your own boundaries as well. Reminder: Communication goes a long way to achieve the goal of an organization and to remain productive despite the remote setup. Thus, be mindful of the way you word your sentences in written messages. Be careful of your tone and body language in calls. Try to exude an approachable aura so that teamwork becomes more seamless and manageable.

While there are many things demanded of you as a competent employee, remember that you’re also human! If something as automated as a machine requires downtime to work efficiently, so do you!

If you work on the weekdays, try to minimize or eliminate work-related tasks on the weekends. Get some more sleep. Watch the new episode of your favorite K-drama on Netflix. Start a workout routine. Bond with your familyBond over lunch and play some card games with them. Catch up on chika or trends with your friends. Find an online date. Discover a new hobby or try to learn a new recipe. What It Takes To Be A True Innovator

Once tagged and located, we can simply use our Shock Bolts to cure handfuls at a time and as an added measure, our Hunter’s Fury can immunize dozens in just 8 seconds flat! To other Sova mains out there, this one’s for you.

Innovation comes in many forms, whether it be in products, processes, or systems. The word “innovation” can overwhelm some people, but for Mikhail Delfin, Accenture Business & Technology Integration Consultant, innovation is first and foremost a mindset: it is opening one’s self to challenge the status quo to create value, whether big or small.

For most students, being an innovator seems like a daunting role. It somewhat implies a certain level of experience and expertise on a matter that a mere 18-22 year old may not possess. A couple weeks ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Mikhail, who shared with me his experience of journeying from a fresh graduate to a full-time consultant in Accenture. The following sections are what I learned from our quick chat.

It is opening one's self to challenge the status quo to create value

“My ult is not ready”: Apprehensions in taking on a career in a major consulting firm Innovation can be practiced in all fields and positions but as a consultant, developing new ideas is a daily must. Shortly after Mikhail graduated from the Ateneo in 2017, he joined arguably the most well-known innovation hub around the world. As early as his first week, he met his career counselor in Accenture to whom he shared his career goals in the field of consulting. In return, he received valuable advice on how to kickstart his career in the firm. Initially, he found the thought of advising well-established companies on how to innovate to be nerve-wracking, but that feeling later changed to excitement. What helped him build confidence was the company's strong mentorship program, rich learning resources, and extensive collection of assets contributed by Accenture's global network of consultants. Visibly, one of the biggest assets of Accenture is a diverse workforce bounded by one purpose: to deliver on the promise of technology and human ingenuity (Accenture, 2020).

Blueprints from the Best of the Best: The FORM Approach Ideas don’t just grow on trees! There are dozens of ways to look at and solve a problem. Regardless of how one chooses to find a solution, Accenture practices an approach to ensure that their innovations are timely, relevant, and impactful for their clients. Here are the 5 phases of the FORM Approach:

“Caution here”: Dealing with burnouts and mental blocks Ideas don’t always come easy. Mental blocks are a reality that all innovators face every now and then. This can at times lead to burnouts, especially when a project is time-sensitive. Being a consultant for a little over 3 years now, Mikhail shares these 3 steps on how to get back on track:

1. Distinguish between what you can and can’t control

Burnouts and mental blocks can happen as a result of feeling overwhelmed. Sometimes, the problem just seems too much for one person to solve in such a short amount of time. In such situations, your mind can get occupied by countless worries. But there’s no point in stressing out and about, especially if most of them are not actionable and are beyond your control. Look at the problem as a whole. Focus on the actions that will solve the problem – and not your worries. Then, zoom in on those within your locus of control. Distinguishing between what you can and can’t control will help erase the clutter in your mind. This will also help you navigate a path forward.

91

Caution!

2. Prioritize, then act.

Now that you have a list of actions, it’s time to prioritize. In consulting, there is a rule of thumb called the Pareto Principle which states that for many outcomes, roughly 80% of consequences come from 20% of the causes called “the vital few.” Consultants and managers alike use the Pareto Principle to focus on activities that generate the most value. Similarly, you should evaluate the actions you have on your list, prioritizing those that have most impact. After all, there is only so much time, budget, and talent you can have in any project. Then, of course, act.

3. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

No one expects you to know and do everything! This is one reason why consultants often work in teams. If you ever find yourself stuck, or need another pair of eyes, you can reach out to your manager for advice, ask help from a teammate, or consult a subject matter expert. If you belong to a big consulting firm like Accenture, this can be easy; however, there are other ways for you to find fresh perspectives even if you are a self-made innovator. Consider widening your network, listening to TED talks, and subscribing to an e-library. While these methods may not directly get you an opinion from an expert, they can refine your understanding of a problem and inform you of an approach to solving your problem.

92

You don’t have to have everything figured out on day 1! In reality, good plans develop over time. If you are passionate about being an innovator, find your vision.

Think about your principles and the things you believe in then advocate it! Innovation is not just a career but a lifestyle. When you share your ideas and talk about your passions with others, you are more likely to find potential partners who will help you grow your ideas into reality.

As a final note, the most crucial thing in being an innovator is to find opportunities in the most challenging of times. You might think that you are limited at the moment, be it time, money, or simply

If you’re not a good shot today, don’t worry!

the fact that we’re still quarantined in our homes. The challenge now is for you to make the situation better, however much you can.

FREELANCING WHAT I LEARNED, AND WHAT I WISH I KNEW

Written by Jywel Nacu 98

I

’ve been doing art commissions since 2018 and in the past three years I’ve metmet different artists and learned from their experiences as content creators while also facing challenges of my own. The following are a list of things I’ve come to know while starting out with my freelancing:

The art industry is very competitive and it could be draining at times. There are various content creators putting up commission slots of their own and it could be overwhelming to see where they’re at compared to the progress that you’ve made. In times like that, you must remember to MOVE AT take your time or you’ll end up experiencing multiple burnouts and YOUR OWN art blocks.

PACE

99

DO YOUR RESEARCH ON THE COST OF YOUR ARTWORKS SO THAT YOU DON' T UNDERVALUE YOURSELF It’s so easy to put a price on something you finished in under 20 minutes but you must take your skill and your resources in mind. The minimum price for traditional work is usually around 500-1000 pesos. That’s just the base price so you need to calculate the time you spent working on the piece, the complexity of the artwork, and the materials you used. The range for digital art is a bit lower and it’s different for everyone but 250 pesos is supposedly the minimum. I once made a mistake of selling 50 peso icons and it ended up taking too much time to accomplish. That’s why you need to do extensive research so that you know how much your art should be. An easy reference for either traditional or digital is to not go below minimum wage if you took a day or more than a day to accomplish it or if you finished fast but used various materials to make it. 100

LIMIT THE NUMBER OF SLOTS YOU WILL OPEN BASED ON THE TIME Organize your schedule accordingly. It may be tempting to accept all these commission requests when you’re starting out but give yourself time. What helped for me is to track the time whenever I draw a commission.

PUT UP YOUR ART DIFFERENT

YOU HAVE

Although a lot of artists nowadays use Instagram as their main social media platform, it’s important to branch out because your client may be on Twitter but not IG. Other platforms such as Redbubble and Ko-fi are useful as well. In my experience, I use Instagram more often but whenever I would share my art through my Facebook account, it typically gains ON more attraction than any WEBSITES other apps.

EVEN WHEN YOU THINK NO ONE WILL SEE IT

102

CONNECT WITH VARIOUS ARTISTS

Making connections is one of my key learnings because it really helps in putting my art out there. Artists I’ve met are also so supportive and they uplift me whenever I get art blocks and even just with general anxiety because of the pandemic. They make you feel that you’re not alone and that if you need help, they’ll be there for you.

It doesn’t matter if you’re not as proud of your art as much as you want to just yet. Starting to make one in the early stages will help you figure out your likes and dislikes and teach you how to improve your portfolio and your work altogether.

PREPARE A PORTFOLIO

104

REDRAWS AND DRAW-THIS-IN-YOUR-STYLE If you feel the need to post new content for your followers but have no inspirations, redrawing past works or sketching someone else’s icon can help you pull out of the rut. You can try out new brushes or coloring techniques, the first step is really just trying.

HELP WITH ART BLOCKS

TAKE

Take care of yourself. Producing art may be your passion but it can definitely be tiresome. You can follow a 4-5 day workweek or work nonstop for 3 weeks and then hold off commissions for a week after. Do what works for you and don’t forget to treat yourself every now and then.

BREAKS 105

S Y A D F F O E B L L I W E R E H T

Some days are extremely slow, sometimes they become weeks and you’re itching to make money already. What I usually do in those days is try out a different hobby or plan out a new gimmick for my followers. People like 20% off deals on your art so if your resources allow it, open up a sale for a limited time. Trust yourself in the next steps that you want to take.

YOU MIGHT GET HATERS OR JUST RUDE PEOPLE It doesn’t matter if you’re not as proud of your art as much as you want to just yet. Starting to make one in the early stages will help you figure out your liWhen a stranger makes a rude remark on your post, block them immediately. If they truly wanted to help you become a better artist, they will give helpful advice or word their critique respectfully. There’s no point in arguing with someone else on the internet. If it takes a toll on you, maybe you can reread positive feedback from kes and dislikes and teach you how to improve your portfolio and your work altogether. 106

Sometimes it feels like corporate work when you’re filling out your commission sheets and you’re whispering to yourself that graphic design isn’t your passion. What you can do here is to prepare a small symbol or a quote that can remind you of your motivations or of your progress. It’s also good to keep in mind that it’s okay to make happy little accidents as Bob Ross says. On a different note, it’s also okay if you decide that freelancing isn’t for you. Maybe it’s not the right time yet but just make sure that the path you’ll choose is something you feel strongly for.

MAKE SURE YOU ENJOY WHAT YOU' RE DOING 108
