Wildcats hoping to contend for district title By Jim Henderson The Silliman Wildcat Football team is hoping to contend for the District 6-2A title and reach the state playoffs in the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools. Second-year coach T.J. Davis welcomed 32 players to fall practice and lists 17 seniors on their roster. “We return a lot of talent and experience from last year,” said Silliman coach T.J. Davis. “If we can grow and mature as the season goes, we can be successful. We will continue to run our spread offense and will change the defense putting in an odd-man front alignment.” The Wildcats lost just three players to graduation, and Davis feels his team can turn the corner offensively with the entire backfield and offensive line returning intact. Silliman’s schedule has some changes as the District is now 6-2A, which includes teams such as Centreville Academy, Bowling Green Academy in Franklinton, Oak Forest Academy in Amite and Central Private School in Baton Rouge. The Wildcats, who finished with a 4-6 mark last season, will be led offensively by senior quarterback Jason Palermo
(6-0, 160). He threw for 20 touchdown passes and had 12 intercepted last year. Palermo completed 89 of 207 passes for 1,603 yards. Joining Palermo in the backfield will be seniors Colt Ducote (5-10, 160) and Austin Gayle (6-0, 170). Ducote has ample speed, and Gayle will be his lead blocker at the fullback spot. Ducote gained 467 yards on 48 carries last season. They both will need to fill the shoes of running back alumni Jake Parsons. Palermo returns two of his favorite targets from last year in senior split end Josh DeLee (5-11, 150) and J.Q. Austin (6-2, 210). DeLee ended last season with 24 receptions and 416 yards and scored three touchdowns in just five games. Austin returns at tight end and had 18 catches for 325 yards and scored nine TD’s. Along the offensive line, the Wildcats will have senior James Bond (6-1, 215) back at right tackle. Senior Richard Colbey (5-10, 170) is the starter at left guard. Junior Michael Austin (5-10, 230) will anchor the line at center, and junior Marty Russell (5-11, 215) returns at right guard. Junior Brady
Brian (6-2, 240) will be back at left tackle. Defensively, the Wildcats are switching to an odd-man front, lining up five players along the line with two linebackers. Along the line, Silliman will have senior Caleb Blackard (5-10, 170) returning at defensive end. Brady Brian and Michael Austin return at the tackle positions. Senior Mason Castello (5-10, 160) will be a new starter at the other end spot. Seniors Derek James (6-0, 185), Gayle and Austin will be leading the linebacker corps. The secondary will have senior Craig Jones (5-11, 170) at one corner, and DeLee will be the other cornerback. Junior Cobb Kelly (6-1, 170) returns at strong safety an Colt Ducote will be back at free safety. Coach Davis is undecided on the team’s punter and kicker as of press time. “We need to work hard and be prepared,” says Davis. “We can’t let one bad thing happen and not execute the next play. We’ve got to get back up and stay competitive every play. We also must be consistent and keep the enthusiasm; those two things alone will keep you in a lot of games.”

Tigers to prowl new district
By Jim Henderson The East Feliciana Tiger football team played its inagural season last year reaching the State Class 2A semifinal round in the playoffs, before being ousted by John Curtis Christian School. EFHS came within one game of reaching the state championship game in its first year of existance after the merging of Clinton and Jackson High Schools. Head coach Cedric Anderson returns for his fifth season at the helm after guiding the Tigers to a 12-1 record. He welcomed 45 players to fall workouts and will have 14 seniors dotting the roster. Anderson will need to replace 17 players who have graduated; many of whom have moved on to play at the college level including Jamal Jackson and Devontay Hogan at Grambling; Joseph Robins and Hendrick Taylor at Alcorn State; Tekemian Ceasar at University of Louisiana-Monroe; and Kendall Collins at Warren Morris College in Texas, a Division III school. The Tigers still feel that they have a enough talent to reach the post-season again. “If we stay healthy, we can be just as competitive as we were last year,” said Anderson. “We are loaded at the skill positions and our lineman are experienced, but we lack depth at certain positions.” The Tigers return six starters on offense and will have eight back on defense. East Feliciana will switch from its multiple two-back set to the one-back set using the pistol formation. The Tigers will continue to use the spread offense, lining up five to six wide receivers. Junior quarterback Kendall Beckwith returns to lead the offense. The first-team All-State Class 2A selection and District MVP signal caller ended last season throwing for 1,582 yards with 18 touchdown passes and just four interceptions. He completed 108 passes on 189 attempts. Joining Beckwith in the backfield will be a trio of running backs: Senior Tyler Armstead (5-7, 160) and juniors Tim Scott (5-8, 180) and Jordan Hills (5-6, 160). Both Armstead and Scott are returning starters who were injured last season. Senior Kevin Woods (5-7, 165) is a new starter at flanker and the split end position is up for grabs between sophomore Danny Johnson (5-8, 160) and Trent Anio (6-4, 200). Johnson and Woods each had seven catches for 80 and 73 yards respectfully last season. Along the offensive line, the Tigers return three starters in senior left tackle Freddie Walker (6-4, 260), junior left guard Braylon Jarrell (6-4, 320) and junior right guard Chris Young (6-4, 285). New starters will be senior Xavier Barge (6-0, 250) at center and junior right tackle DeQuan Franklin (5-11,210). Defensively, the Tigers will operate out of the 4-3 alignment which features four down lineman and three linebackers. Along the line, East Feliciana will be led by senior Chris Matthews (5-7, 230) at the nose tackle spot. Matthews had 20 tackles, one fumble recovery, six quarterback sacks and three quarterback hurries last season. Senior Marquelle Ross (5-10, 185) is returning at defensive end and Freddie Walker will also return at the end position. Braylon Jarrell will be a returning starter at the other tackle spot. Senior Wando Stampley (5-10, 170) is the returning middle linebacker. Newcomers battling for the other linebacker position are senior Michael Rogers (5-9, 185), freshman K.C. McKnight (5-10, 170) and Kendall Beckwith. In the secondary, the Tigers will have Michael Rogers playing at strong safety when not playing linebacker. Senior Olajawon White (5-8, 150) is a new starter at free safety. A pair of seniors return at the cornerback positions. LaDarius Jackson (5-6, 170) and Ellis Eubanks (5-8, 170) will continue to seek out interceptions. EFHS lost both their punter and placekicker from last year. As of press time, no replacements have been named. “We want to keep our defense simple,” said Anderson. “We will have zone and man-to-man coverages, but we want to take advantage of our team speed, which will be our chief strength.” The Tigers will host Capital for their first home game on Friday, Sept. 9. East Feliciana will move up to the Class 3A ranks this year due to reclassification. The Tigers will compete in District 6-3A and will be joined by Parkview Baptist, Glen Oaks, Baker and West Feliciana. District play begins at home against Parkview on Oct. 7.
